Rhine and Neckar River Boat Cruises from Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Worms

Day-trip boat cruises and short excursion tours on the Neckar River and the Rhine in Germany are possible from the historic towns Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Worms.

Heidelberg Castle and Old Bridge on the Neckar River, Germany

Visitors to the historic university town Heidelberg may enjoy pleasure boat cruises on the Neckar River or longer cruises that go to towns on the Rhine such as Mannheim and Worms. Panorama cruises in Heidelberg are around an hour but longer cruises to NeckargemĂŒnd, Neckarsteinach, and Hirschhorn are also popular. Special cruises go further down the Rhine to Mannheim, Worms, Speyer, and even the Loreley Valley or up the Neckar as far as Bad Wimpfen. The world’s largest solar catamaran cruises daily in Heidelberg. Buy tickets online for Heidelberg panorama cruises or Heidelberg to Neckarsteinach river cruises.

The day-trip pleasure boat cruise season on the Neckar River in Heidelberg is generally from Easter (or early April) to mid-October with the high season from early June to mid-September.

Day-Trip Sightseeing Cruises in Heidelberg, Mannheim & Worms

The  Weisse Flotte Heidelberg , or Rhein-Neckar-Fahrgastschifffahrt, is the main pleasure cruise boat operator on the Rhine and Neckar rivers in the Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Worms region. The largest number of tour departures is from Heidelberg.

Day-trip sightseeing cruises may be divided into three categories:

  • Round-trip circular panorama cruises ( Rundfahrten ) of usually around an hour from Heidelberg , Mannheim, and Worms.
  • Scheduled excursion cruises ( Linienfahrten ) that follow a specific route and schedule, roundtrips are possible, or return by train. The best choice here is cruising upstream from Heidelberg to Neckarsteinach .
  • Special cruises with specific themes, events, or tour destinations — worth considering but dates are limited.

Round Trip Panorama Cruises in Heidelberg, Mannheim & Worms

Although panorama circular cruises of around an hour are possible in Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Worms, Heidelberg is the clear first choice for natural and cultural beauty.

Neckar River Boat Panorama Cruises from Heidelberg:

Circular sightseeing boat cruises (Rundfahrten) lasting 50 minutes depart daily during the whole cruise season from the Stadthalle pier in Heidelberg. Cruise boats depart every full hour from 10 am to 5 pm as long as at least ten adults are on board. These panorama cruises are easily booked online , at the landing kiosk, or on the boat (cash only).

Neckarsonne Solar Catamaran on the Neckar in Heidelberg

An interesting and environmentally friendlier alternative is the 50-minute cruise on the Neckarsonne . The “Neckar Sun” is the world’s largest solar catamaran and cruises silently up to six times per day from April to October (not on Mondays) from the Alte BrĂŒcke (Karl-Theodor-BrĂŒcke).

Another option is the Liselotte NeckarfĂ€hre which operates as a ferry service on the Neckar from early April to end October. It stops at the Mariot Hotel, Campus, Neuenheim, Stadthalle and Alte BrĂŒcke. This cruise is around half an hour each way. Passengers pay per number of stops traveled or buy a day ticket and stay on board for a round trip or more.

Neckar and Rhein Panorama Cruises from Mannheim:

During the high season, harbor cruises (Hafenrundfahrten) depart a few times per week from the KurpfalzbrĂŒcke in Mannheim. Mannheim and adjacent Ludwigsburg have around 70 km of quays making for one of the largest river harbors in Europe. Industry, rather than nature or culture, is the main attraction here, especially in Ludwigsburg with huge its chemical industries. These 90 minutes to just over 2-hour cruises are arranged by Kurpfalz-Personenschiffahrt .

Rhine Panorama Cruises from Worms:

Panorama cruises on the Rhine are currently very limited from Worms. A few times per year, boats from the Weisse Flotte arrive from Heidelberg (3.5 hours downstream, just over 4 hours upstream). In addition to the cruises arriving from Heidelberg and Mannheim, separate panorama cruises on the Rhine near Worms are offered before the boats return to the Neckar.

GetYourGuide

Scheduled Cruises on the Neckar River from Heidelberg

Scheduled cruises ( Linienfahrten ) are generally longer and more interesting than the short circular sightseeing tours. It is usually possible to interrupt cruises at any stop but enquire when buying tickets.

Day pleasure boat cruises on the Neckar River from Heidelberg are usually referred to as the Burgenfahrten (Castle Cruises) as so many castles may be seen en route. This is one of the loveliest and most pleasant river excursion day-trip cruises in Germany. Cruises upriver of Heidelberg pass through numerous locks, which help to explain why the upriver and downriver cruise times are virtually identical when cruising on this part of the Neckar.

The main cruise is from Heidelberg to Neckarsteinach and back — buy tickets online . This cruise takes place usually twice daily during the shoulder season and almost hourly on weekends and during the main season from the end of May to mid-September.

During the high season, it is possible to go further upstream to Hirschhorn on some cruises while a few boats go all the way to Eberbach — usually on Thursdays only.

Approximate Boat Travel Times in Minutes Between Stops on the Neckar River:

The influence of the locks is obvious from these traveling times — the full-length cruise is only 10 minutes faster downstream than upstream.

GetYourGuide

Neckar and Rhine Cruises from Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Worms

During the high season, it is possible to cruise from Heidelberg on the Neckar River to the Rhine cities Mannheim and Worms. Cruises from Mannheim and Worms to Heidelberg and Neckarsteinach are also possible.

Cruises from Heidelberg to Mannheim and Worms on the Rhine and back are usually on Wednesdays and Sundays during the high season. Cruises from Mannheim to Neckarsteinach via Heidelberg are possible most Saturdays. Occasionally, the cruise may start or end in Worms.

Approximate Boat Cruise Times in Minutes Between Stops on the Neckar & Rhine Rivers:

The force of the Rhine is clear from these times — just the section on the Rhine alone (Worms to Mannheim) takes 30 minutes longer upstream than downstream.

Special Cruises on the Rhine and Neckar from Heidelberg

The Weisse Flotte often has special cruises on the Rhine and Neckar rivers. Individuals should usually make advance reservations for these cruises.

Special destinations on the Neckar River include the beautiful medieval town Bad Wimpfen (a Michelin three-star sight often missed by foreign tourists) and on the Rhine River as far as St Goar and the Loreley. Special event cruises to shows such as the Rhine in Flames fireworks are also popular. From these longer cruises, passengers often return to Heidelberg at night by bus.

Tickets and Savings Tips for Neckar Cruises from Heidelberg

Neckar and Rhine cruises generally do not offer the wide selection of fares and savings deals that are common on boats operating on the Middle Rhine . However, you may usually cruise for free on your birthday. Small discounts are given on the Heidelberg Card sold by the Tourist Office.

Children 4 and younger cruise for free – maximum two children per paying adult. Children 5 to 15 (and dogs) pay slightly less than the adult fare, while return fares are significantly cheaper than two singles. Bicycle tickets are €1.50 cheaper than the child fare and only possible if space allows. Family discounts (Familienkarte) are available for two adults and three children cruising together.

The most expensive one-way fare is Worms to Neckarsteinach at €40 (including bus return). Return fares from Heidelberg are €22 to Neckarsteinach , €23 to Mannheim, and €32 to Worms.

Panorama cruises in Heidelberg are easily booked online . Online reservations are increasingly possible for other cruises too, especially to Neckarsteinach , or buy tickets from the kiosks at the main landings. Tickets are also sold on most boats but usually, only cash payments are accepted.

Often a minimum of around 10 or 20 paying adults is required for boats to depart. Enquire if such restriction applies before buying tickets, especially during the quieter periods.

In contrast to Middle Rhine Cruises , picnicking with own supplies is not allowed on most boats.

Cruises on the Rhine near Heidelberg are available from Speyer — a pleasant town with a magnificent Romanesque cathedral and interesting technology museum — and from Mainz . The most beautiful part of the Rhine for day cruises is the Middle Rhine between RĂŒdesheim and St Goar (just past the Loreley Rock). If doing this day trip from Heidelberg by train , starting the cruise from Bingen (rather than RĂŒdesheim) may at times offer faster railway connections. Similarly, compare travel times and connections before deciding whether to end the cruise at a station on the left or right bank of the Rhine.

Destinations were good. Staff were very nice and helpful. Cabins clean and tidy. Showers only for the slim and agile. Wifi was OK. Food was OK, with no choices. Wine etc was plentiful. English definitely at a disadvantage with some guides and only two TV channels.

5 Different Rivers: The Rhine, Neckar, Main, Moselle, and Saar (port-to-port cruise)

Our first time with Croisi. We were very pleased with everything. We knew there would likely be few people who spoke English among the passengers but there were enough to make the trip most enjoyable. The tours each day were interesting and well organized. The room and meals were very good value. The pace of the trip was really good. The music for dancing at night could have been a bit better but not a big deal. The staff were most helpful.

good overall. the day spent in heilbronn was disappointing. we had no local guides, which I understand is a violation of European regulations which state at all local stops there will be a qualified local guide. also, we spent over 3 hours in a restaurant there, time which would have been better spent exploring the town. specifically, we should have gone back to Heidelberg earlier in the day. I don't understand the Heilbronn stop or what happened.

Known as the Vier BĂŒrgen Stadt 0r, ‘Town with 4 Castles,’ Neckarsteinach is the perfect get-away into Germany’s wonderful countryside. Lying right on the banks of the River Neckar this pretty town exudes peace and tranquility. Plus there are four old castles to explore. You can clamber around the ruins of two 14th century castles while learning about their long and rich history. Afterwards there is a cosy tea-shop in which to enjoy some home-made cakes. And then there is a fun local museum just upstairs to learn a bit more about the area. Then it’s a 5 minute drive over the river Neckar to the scenic hill top town of Dilsberg. Behind the Main Gate lies a quaint little place full of smalltown German charm and an interesting history. Here we will explore castle ruins dating back to 1150 with some fascinating stories to reveal. From the top of the castle walls one can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the town and the whole area. Dilsberg also has it’s very own chocolate shop with a delicious array of homemade truffles – a perfect authentic German gift to take home!

Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberger Schloss in German) is a popular castle and castle ruin in Germany and a major landmark of Heidelberg.

Why Visit Heidelberg & Heidelberg Castle

So many reasons! First, Heidelberg is a famous university town and home to Heidelberg University, which is the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Germany. A friend of mine studied there and her student housing was in the historic city center just steps from the Heiliggeistkirche!

Second, the Heidelberg Altstadt is known for its romantic architecture, historic sites, and unparalleled riverside views. And while there are tourists in Heidelberg, it’s not just a tourist destination.

Third, the city is quite easy to navigate and easy to get around on foot, so you can definitely see Heidelberg Schloss and other important landmarks in a day.

Your first stop should be Altstadt (Old Town) where you’ll find picturesque streets lined with cafés, medieval buildings, and churches. Highlights include the Marktplatz (main square), the Church of the Holy Spirit, and the Rathaus (town hall).

Another must see is the Alte Brücke (old bridge), a stone bridge spanning the river Neckar and connecting two sides of historic Heidelberg. Take a stroll or book a river cruise to get great views and a unique perspective of the castle and the city.

What You Need to Know About Visiting Heidelberg Castle

Getting to heidelberg.

You can travel to Heidelberg by train or car. The main train station in Heidelberg is centrally located and has service to both regional towns and major cities, the nearest ones being Frankfurt and Stuttgart. To find the best train or route to take, check out the Deutsche Bahn website (German Rail).

On the Deutsche Bahn website you can check train schedules and book point-to-point tickets or regional tickets. This is where I book all of our Germany train tickets.

If you’re driving a rental car, take the Autobahn (motorway) A5 or A 656 (via Darmstadt, direction: Karlsruhe/Basel) and exit at Heidelberg motorway interchange or at “Heidelberg/Schwetzingen” which will take you to the city center.

If you don’t want to worry about transportation, consider booking a day tour! This guided tour from Frankfurt provides private bus transportation and brings you to the main tourist attractions of Heidelberg.

Directions to Heidelberg Castle

To get to Castle Heidelberg from the central train station using public transportation, take bus line 33 or bus line 20 to the stop “Bergbahn.” Once there, you have to take a short ride via the funicular railway all the way up to the “Schloss” station. For more info on the Bergbahn, scroll to the end of this guide.

Alternatively, you can also walk from the train station to Old Town and then to the castle. You can find the uphill path that leads up to the castle (called Burgweg) next to the Rathaus and Kornmarkt. You can choose between the short route (with steps) or the scenic route (no steps). For both paths, follow the signs that lead to the castle. It’ll take 45-60 minutes to walk up to the castle from the main train station.

If you’re driving, keep in mind that there aren’t many parking spaces close to the castle. There are a few parking spots with fees about 500m from the main entrance of the castle grounds, further uphill of the garden area. Take note that the one way street uphill to the castle is closed to the public on weekends. It’s easier to park in a larger public lot and then walk to the castle enjoying the town along the way.

Brief History of Heidelberg Castle

The Heidelberg Castle has a fascinating history that dates back to the early 13th century. The earliest structure was constructed in 1214 and continued expanding until it became two castles. It was first used as a royal residence by Prince Elector Ruprecht III, the King of Germany during a short period in the early 15th century.

Originally a fortified castle with outer defensive walls, Heidelberg Castle continued to expand  into a combination of several buildings. Succeeding Prince Electors of the Palatinate built several residential halls, which resulted in the property looking like a mix of a castle and palace.

Unfortunately, the castle also suffered a lot of damage. In the 17th century, it was destroyed by the French army during the Nine Years War. Parts of it were rebuilt but it was damaged again by lightning strike twice in the 18th century, leaving the castle uninhabitable and in ruins.

It was never completely restored but the ruined castle now stands as a symbol of German Romanticism. The vestiges of the past with the restored structure all highlight a different period of German architecture which attracts over millions of tourists annually.

What To See In Heidelberg Castle

 German Apothecary Museum

German Apothecary Museum

The German Apothecary Museum is an interesting glimpse into the history of pharmaceutics. The exhibition showcases everything from natural remedies from medieval times to antique lab equipment. The museum is located on the lower floor of the Ottheinrich Building.

Heidelberg Tun (Barrel)

Heidelberg Tun

The Heidelberg Tun is the world’s largest wine barrel. It was built by Prince Elector Karl Theodor to hold over 220,000 liters (58,124 gallons) of wine. The giant barrel stands at 7 meters (23 feet) high, and is 8.5 meters (28 feet) wide. It even has a dance floor built on top of it!

Friedrich Building

Friedrich Building

The Friedrich Building is the royal family’s ancestral hall. It’s filled with statues of emperors and kings displaying the idealized royal lines as built by Friedrich IV. You can admire some of the statues and sculptures that are on the facade of the building but the original ones are displayed inside.

Ottheinrich's Wing at castle

Ottheinrich Building and the Imperial Hall

The Ottheinrich Building houses the grand Imperial Hall, one of the most ornate and beautiful rooms in the castle. The ceremonial hall also managed to keep many of its original parts like the door frames, sandstone ornaments, and some sculptures. The second floor has now been repurposed into a special venue for exhibitions and receptions for weddings.

castle gardens

Castle Gardens and Courtyard

The castle gardens, constructed by garden architect Salomon de Caus, are a beautiful sight in itself. As you stroll through the romantic palace garden, you’ll stumble upon vibrant flower beds, intimate garden alcoves, mazes and man-made grottoes, a heated greenhouse with orange trees, and fish ponds.

There are also several patios around the castle with amazing views of the city below so don’t miss those!

Heidelberg castle illuminated at night

Heidelberg Castle Lighting and Illumination

The castle lighting and illumination is a special event that takes place three times a year, usually  the first Saturdays in June and September, and the second Saturday in July. It’s done in memory of the three times when the castle was on fire. The event begins with a light show of the castle being illuminated to simulate the fire. It’s then followed by a spectacular firework show launched from the Old Bridge over the Neckar river.

Even if you aren’t able to see the special castle lighting, you can admire the beautifully lit castle every evening after dusk. The best places to see the illuminated castle are the Alte Brücke, the Philosophenweg, and the market squares in the Alt Stadt.

Bergbahn station

Bergbahn: Yes or No?

If you have the time, we recommend getting the Panorama Ticket at the Bergbahn station in the Alstadt that gives you entrance into the castle, as well as a ticket to ride the Bergbahn all the way up to Königstuhl, then back down the castle, and finally, back into the Altstadt.

Here’s what we did when we visited the castle. First, we bought our Panorama tickets at the station in the Alstadt. Then, we rode the first Bergbahn to the second stop. You can either get on the second Bergbahn or take a few minutes to get a coffee at the terrace cafe. We immediately got on the second Bergbahn. Got the very front or the very back of this Bergbahn for great views!

Heidelberg Bergbahn options

Rode the Bergbahn to the top of Königstuhl. We spent 30-40 minutes enjoying the amazing view, sitting the Königstuhl (King’s Chair), and just wandering around the area (there’s a falconry, hotel, artwork, trails, and a fun spot for kids). Before going back down the hill, be sure to take the stairs down to the Bergbahn machine room viewing area. There you can see the inner workings of the Bergbahn.

Sign toward Heidelberg Bergbahn machine room

Then we rode the Bergbahn back down to the castle. If we’d had more time and the weather been nicer, we would have loved to have hiked down. Next time! We spent an hour or so touring the castle (there was a thunderstorm towards the end of our visit so we cut it a bit short).

We could have taken the Bergbahn back into the Altstadt but we instead opted to the take the stairs. It was a short walk through the pretty neighborhood below the castle.

Kayak-Tour in Heidelberg on river Neckar provided by Ludger Benighaus

neckar tour heidelberg

'Dreamy' city offers tourists German charm without the stag dos – and flights are £87

Travellers are flocking to Heidelberg, and it’s easy to see why.

The German city is trending according to Hilton, which has seen a 132% increase in searches for Heidelberg in the last year.

The hotel company puts the bump in interest down tourists preferring ‘less-trodden’ locations, as Heidelberg provides the German charm of Berlin or Hamburg and Gothic architecture of nearby Prague , just without the hordes of stag dos.

On the Neckar River in the southwest of the country, it’s home to Heidelberg University, one of many centuries-old buildings. Known for its history and scenery, it welcomes over 11 million visitors each year.

The German tourist board describes Heidelberg as ‘a city worth falling in love with’, saying it has ‘an unparalleled choice of culture and entertainment and hearty yet heavenly cuisine.’

They may be a little biased, but others have similarly glowing reviews. Indian travel blogger Sonal of Drifter Planet calls it ‘charming, and historical’ with ‘amazing nature, hiking possibilities, a dreamy castle, an old town with a romantic bridge, and a super amazing party scene.’

High praise indeed.

Things to do in Heidelberg

Start your trip by immersing yourself in Heidelberg’s old town (Altstadt), which is a hub of restaurants, shops and churches to explore.

Heidelberg Castle is also a must-see. While it may effectively be a ruin, this Renaissance structure is impressive given it dates back as far as 1200. You can get funicular railway from the old town and tour the building, from its massive wine cellar to the Knights’ Hall – if you’re lucky, you may even see one of its summer fireworks shows.

A walk across Karl Theodor Bridge is a wonderful way to take in the city, as are the many river cruise tours available on the Neckar.

There are also a number of museums around Heidelberg University, including the Carl Bosch Museum documenting the life and work of the chemist and Nobel Prize-winner.

Or, if you prefer a more outdoorsy break, Philosopher’s Walk is a hiking trail that’ll put you through your paces and give you picturesque views galore.

How to get to Heidelberg

The best way to get to Heidelberg is via Frankfurt am Main Airport, which offers daily flights to and from multiple UK airports. Direct return fares from London to Frankfurt can cost as little as ÂŁ87 according to Skyscanner.

Once you land, it’s then a 55-minute train from Frankfurt Airport Station to Heidelberg, with one-way tickets on the Deutsche Bahn service priced at around £16.

Alternatively, Flixbus has a number of direct coach routes from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg that cost less than ÂŁ7 a ticket and get you to your destination in around 90 minutes, or you can hire a car between the two cities and drive in under an hour.

When to visit Heidelberg

Weather in Heidelberg is cold in winter and warm in summer, with average temperatures reaching maximum 5°C in January before peaking at around 26°C in July and August.

The wettest month here is May with an average of 3mm of rain, but it’s fairly rainy year-round so pack a brolly regardless.

Weather aside, Heidelberg’s Christmas markets are always popular, and seasonal events like an Old Town Autumn Festival (held on the last Saturday of September with music and a Medieval Market) and the International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg in November could also be worth planning your itinerary around.
