The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis are one of the most compelling natural phenomena of the year. To see this phenomenon, it needs to be sufficiently dark; thus, the auroras begin their marvelous dance across the northern sky when the evenings start to darken in August. 

The magical auroras dancing in the skies have always fascinated people. According to an ancient Finnish belief, the auroras are the creations of the mythical Firefox. When it runs across arctic Lapland, its tail hits trees, rocks and other obstacles creating sparks which shower up into the skies. The auroras are known in many other cultures as well. Health, prosperity, happiness, love and many other good things will come to those who have seen the auroras.

The auroras at Levi are breathtaking. They never look exactly the same, as their intensity changes all the time. On some evenings the auroras will delight Levi visitors for only a couple of minutes, but occasionally you will enjoy a spectacle lasting several hours. At their best, the auroras are incredibly strong in different shades of green, blue, red and violet.

On average, the auroras can be seen 111 times a year. The season to see them starts in August and lasts all the way to the end of April. During the darkest times of winter, it is already possible to see the auroras after 5pm, but we know from experience that they are at their best between 8pm to 1am. In April’s lightest days the auroras will start their dance only after the night has become dark. To see or photograph the auroras at Levi, the sky needs to be clear and you must be far from any excess lights. Often autumn is the best time to capture them when the land is dark and there is as little scattered light as possible to disturb the view. The best direction to look for the auroras is in the northern sky when it is clear and dark.

Levi, (pronounced “lev-ee”) we were surprised to discover is not a town in Finland at all, it is the name of Finland’s biggest ski resort . More specifically, it is located in the Kittilä municipality of northern Finland, snuggled in the heart of Finnish Lapland.

It is Levi’s (and surrounding Kittilä municipality’s) remote location, 170km north of the Arctic Circle that really places it on the map. Sat perfectly in what is known as the “Auroral Oval”, this makes it one of the best destinations in the World to see the Northern Lights!

Plus – with the Solar Cycle set to burst with the strongest activity of Northern Lights displays for 11 years this Winter 2024 / 2025, there has never been a better time to go out and see the Aurora in Levi!

The best time of year to see the Northern Lights in Levi is during its darker Winter months, anytime from mid-August to mid-April, though it is recommended to visit from early September into late March just to make sure. After all, the later in Winter you visit, the length of darkness available increases – as do your chances!

Deep in the Winter months, especially around December and January, is when the probability to see the Levi Finland northern lights increases. However, a success rate each night depends on the unique solar conditions of each evening.

The ideal conditions are a cold, clear and cloudless night with strong forecasted solar activity.

NORTHERN LIGHTS IN LEVI: BEST TIME OF DAY

When the Aurora forecast is just right, the renowned best time of day during Levi’s Winter months to see the Northern Lights is between 9pm to 1am, however it is possible to see them at any point during the darkness of night.

September initiates the seasonal shift, with temperatures ranging from 30°F to 46°F (-1°C to 8°C). As autumn transitions to winter, October witnesses temperatures dropping to 19°F to 35°F (-7°C to 2°C), and by November, snowfall becomes more pronounced, transforming Levi into a winter wonderland.

December, the heart of winter, experiences temperatures ranging from -11°F to 14°F (-24°C to -10°C), creating the perfect backdrop for witnessing the mesmerising Northern Lights.

January and February maintain the winter chill, with temperatures averaging around -20°F to 7°F (-29°C to -14°C).

• Layers of socks, including a pair of thick thermal socks.
• Layers and layers!!! There is a strong recommendation of at least 3 layers when you are outside at all times. This involves a base layer (polyester or silk to not absorb sweat), a middle insulating layer like a thick fleece and an outer layer, ideally waterproof to block out wind, rain and snow. Ideally the outer coat will also have a hood.
• Accessories to keep you warm, especially things like thermal gloves, bobble hats and ear muffs! Pack a few pairs of gloves in case they get wet. Ideally your glove ‘top layer’ will be waterproof.
• Snood (neck warmer). If its windy, the cold chill on your face can take your breath away!

HOW TO GET TO LEVI IN FINLAND

Getting to levi by air.

The best way to get to Levi, the award-winning ski resort and village, is by flying into its closest airport Kittilä International Airport (KTT), located just a 14 minute / 15km drive away.

While there are multiple flights that arrive into Kittilä Airport daily, from the UK the only direct flight option we can find is with TUI, originating from London Gatwick. All the other options appear to have a change of one stop in Helsinki.

London Gatwick: Direct flights with TUI, approx. 3.5 hours. London Heathrow: 1 stop via Helsinki with FinnAir. Manchester: 1 stop via Helsinki with FinnAir. Edinburgh: 1 stop via Helsinki with FinnAir.

In Finland, Levi is perhaps best known as being one of the largest ski resorts in the country but at The Aurora Zone, we’re more excited about its Northern Lights potential.

Sitting in the far north of Finland, high above the Arctic Circle, Levi is in a prime location for some brilliant Aurora action and the Levi Northern Lights Village is perhaps your best bet.

From the innovative creators of Saariselkä’s Northern Lights Village, Levi features 40 Aurora Cabins that put its location to good use. Thanks to these dedicated Northern Lights accommodation, you can search the skies for an extraordinary display right from your bed.

Aurora Cabins

There are few locations that give you the chance to sleep in specialised Northern Lights accommodation for the duration of your stay but in Levi, you’ll call an Aurora Cabin home every night of your holiday.

With a half-glass north facing roof, these brilliant designs ensure you won’t miss a moment of Northern Lights activity, should they appear in the sky. What’s more, as the twin/double bed is situated right underneath the window, you’ll have the brilliant opportunity to see the Auroras as you’re tucked up in your duvet!

The designs are based on a traditional wooden kota (tepee) for a cosy feel and come with a shower room and toilet. The windows also have laser heating which means if the snow starts to fall, you can easily melt it away.

The seasons and wilderness of Levi

Levi’s town centre has plenty of amenities but it is compact enough to see the surrounding wilderness almost at all times, which is where you’ll find the Levi Northern Lights Village, just 16km away. Though the village sits within easy access of Levi centre, it is quietly tucked away to show off the region’s natural wonders in all their glory.

It is said that in Levi, there are eight seasons instead of four because of the changes that nature undergoes as each month passes. Autumn doesn’t turn into winter here. Instead, it is a smooth transition of colours that invite the first snowfall before ‘real winter’ sets in.

This means that no matter what time of year you visit Levi, the natural surroundings always has something to show off.
