NCL Drink Prices & Bar Menus

Norwegian Cruise Line drink menus tend to be the same fleet-wide and are consistent across most ships. Changes in what is available in the bars are normally based on each ship’s venues and bars.

For example, there is a whiskey bar menu and a martini bar menu, but those venues aren’t on all ships. Additionally, ships with wine cellars or wine bars have an expanded menu.

What do drinks cost on Norwegian Cruise Line?

Most beer is $7 , some wines are as inexpensive as $9-$13/glass and cocktails range $10-$15. There are specialty drinks that are obviously more expensive, but in general, the costs for beverages are reasonable with NCL.

Don’t forget the gratuities on drinks

If you’re NOT on a drink or beverage package, Norwegian Cruise Line charges an additional 20% gratuity on every drink purchase .

Bottled water and coke prices on NCL

For non-drinkers, the cost of a soda ranges from $3-$3.50 depending on which bar you order from and bottled water ranges from $4 for boxed water (500ml) to $6 for premium water like Aqua Panna.

**NOTE** Some of the menus show Pepsi products, as these were taken during the last days that Pepsi was served (Jan 2023) – Pepsi has now been replaced by Coke on the ships.

First timer on NCL and we have a drink package covering $1400.0 each, it’s a 5 day Bahama’s cruise on the Sky, in your experience, is the $1400 “enough”? Thanks

Hello! I think you’re referring to the value of the “Free at Sea” or basic drink package. It’s basically unlimited drinks up to $15/each for that price, so I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be enough!

Hi Phil – first time NCL cruiser. With regards to martinis on board. If I order a Ketel One martini will that put me over the $15 free at sea limit for one drink since it has two shots in it plus the vermouth?

Hi Todd, The drinks are priced per cocktail not by how many shots there are in the actual drink (thankfully!) 🙂 – So if you order a martini or any other multi-shot drink, it’ll be the price on the menu regardless of the amount of alcohol. I think that’s what you’re asking. Enjoy your cruise!

I hope there is lots of Drambuie on board the Viva in June!!!! th 5 adults in our family always drink Port and Drambuie after dinner, and on some cruises the ship has run out of Drambuie. Fingers crossed!

There is PLENTY! 🙂 I can personally confirm that (without shame). Enjoy!

What about beers? You show everything that is avalable but I didn’t see any beers! I guess that they have classic big breweries but what about craft beers? They must have some.

Hi Sylvain – I’m actually updating all of the menus this week! After your comment, I made an effort to get all of the beer offerings on my latest cruise (NCL Joy Transatlantic)… I’ll post that here shortly.

Phil: Love there is an Irish Bar on EPIC!! I think you have Guinness…….do you also have Smithwicks and Harp? I still don’t see a beer list with pricing. Thanks. Bob G.

Hi Bob! I don’t recall seeing Harp or Smithwicks unfortunately 🙁 – I’m about to upload all new menus this coming week. We just did a cruise and got all new menus scanned.

Hi Phil. The wine list for ships with a wine cellar bar eg Mondavi, has “Premium Plus” against certain wines / champagnes. Does that mean that these glasses are available only to holders of Premium Plus? But are those holders also entitled to all wines which are served by the glass regardless of price? I understand that champagne on NCL for Premium Plus holders may now be restricted to its own Rose Champagne – but there are so many conflicting comments, who knows!?! Many thanks.

Hi Colin, With premium plus, you can order those specific bottles of wine at meals. The bottle is included in the package. If you have the basic beverage package, the price you see is what you’d pay for that bottle.

With premium plus, if it’s sold by the glass, it’s included always! **a few exceptions to this like Louis XIII which I think is $200 per oz – not surprising it’s not included 🙂

A good example is, where Veuve Clicquot use to be available everywhere on the ship by the glass (and included in Premium Plus), it’s now only in Le Bistro – and is still included with Premium Plus. So if it’s on the menu by the glass, order as much as you want!

So if you find a champagne sold by the glass somewhere, you’ll get it with the P+

A nifty unknown thing though, is some of the Specialty restaurants have a bar within the restaurant and you can go to that bar and order things that might not be available around the ship (like the above Veuve Clicquot)

I hope this helps – if not, let me know!

Wow! Thanks Phil. Not only one of the fastest responses to any on-line query I have made – but more information and facts than even NCL Customer Service could provide! Many thanks

Glad you found it helpful! Enjoy your cruise, and — break even on that package! 🙂

Any frozen cocktails lists?

Hi Nello – Yes! The very first menu has the most common frozen cocktails served (Primarily at the pool bars). They also do some unique drinks that aren’t on the menus.

These are super helpful!! Can’t wait to cruise – drink list prepared – on Sunday!

Glad this could help! Enjoy your cruise!

Do you happen to know how much mocktails, like virgin daiquiris, cost? I’ve yet to find a menu with them included.

Great question! I’ve never seen a menu of mocktails on any NCL cruise, but I know they make anything you want without alcohol. I have a friend that I travel with that doesn’t drink and she orders them all the time, but has a beverage package and never gets charged. I can only presume you should expect to pay the price on the menu, alcohol or not. Just know that they would be covered in a drink package and that they can be made on request. Sadly, I think NCL is missing a huge opportunity by not offering specific non-alcoholic drinks.

Thank you for all the menu information. Can you advise of the situation for a Cruise guest on a Free at Sea package, leaving from Marseille on 11 night package stopping at Barcelona, Palma,Naples,Rome,Livorno and Cannes, with regards additional taxes for drinks when in port or at sea? Many blogged cruisers have posted conflicting information.

It’s understandable why there is a lot of confusion. Spain has made some changes recently and random ports in other countries have different regulations.

Expect you’ll be paying 10% VAT on the VALUE of the drink while in spanish waters (within 12 miles of the coast, I believe). In the past, it was only while docked, now it it seems that the VAT tax is charged even while in Spanish water. I’m unsure about Italy and France – but our last cruise recently did not have any taxes while on the Free at Sea because officially we weren’t “buying” anything. Spain is the first country to close that loophole I think. But these Tax rules are changing rapidly, so what you read today may likely change. So far, however, aside from Spain, most taxes are charged for PURCHASES while IN PORT, and not in EVERY port. Confusing, right? In the end, it only adds up to a few dollars – but can still be a surprise.

The biggest change that happened recently was Spain declared that any ship departing a Spanish port would have these taxes charged regardless of the other ports, for the whole cruise. This will definitely add a significant amount to a bill even for the Free at Sea people! Since they’ll be charging on the value of the drink served, even if it’s Free or Included in the Free at Sea promotion.

I’ve yet to speak to anyone that has encountered this first hand… I think the rule just started in the past week or so. I’ll update the article as I know for sure!

Thanks for your reply,as you say very confusing indeed, however as our cruise is leaving from Marseille I can only assume that the charges will not apply for the full duration of the cruise.

I think you are correct, but be prepared for changes and the unexpected, since European countries are making changes with these types of tourism taxes.

What draught beers are available on board Norwegian Epic?

I actually don’t recall seeing any! They were all bottles. I’ve been on the epic 4 times and I don’t think there have ever been taps come to think of it.

Hi Mick, Thanks for sharing this! We’re planning on trip on the Norwegian Joy at New Years. What was the Whisky bar like on the Joy? Do you know if they’re changing the scotch/whisky options frequently?

Many thanks

Hi Nicole, We haven’t done the Joy (YET), but planning on the transatlantic back after it’s Jan 2024 refurb. That said, the Maltings Bar on the Encore (sister ship) was quite lovely, as it is on Epic. The menus are shared in the Maltings bars across all ships from what I’ve experienced. The changes that stand out between some of the ships is the fact that Johnny Walker Blue wasn’t available all the time (or even on the menu) but it was on the Encore. Other than that, the menu has basically been the same since 2019. Enjoy the cruise!

Why don’t any of these blog entries state how much a soda costs? If I knew how much a soda costs, I can determine if the ~$10/day is worth it for me. Thank you!

Hi Ann, If you take a look at some of the menus, they show sodas, etc. Expect to pay $3 for a soda + 20% service charge. Other non-alcoholic items like energy drinks and bottles of water, expect to spend about $5 each. (plus the service charge / gratuity )

NCL Drinks Packages | A Comprehensive Guide On NCL Drink Menu & Prices

NCL offers two major drinks packages that give you unlimited drinks. Unlike the other cruise lines, the drinks policy at NCL is flexible.

Onboard, you can enjoy as many drinks as you want, but the only limit is you can get two drinks at a time. You can savor some top-notch Vodka, whiskey, rum, cocktails, and other beverages.

Most people, including myself, go for the Premium Beverages package, known as ‘Unlimited Open Bar.’ That allows you to order drinks up to $15.

If you’re a real fan of drinks and want more alcohol, the Premium Plus Beverage package is the perfect option for you.

Both packages include drinks from almost all specialty bars onboard. So whether you’re on Deck 12, 14, or any, you can step into your nearest bars and enjoy drinks.

Don’t worry if you’re under 21, and there are two packages for you. The unlimited soft drink and Starbucks packages will let you enjoy your favorite drinks onboard. Some of the delectable drinks like Coke, sprite, tonic water, classic coffees, tea, and other drinks are included in these menus.

Today, I will guide you about the NCL drink packages, So grab yourself a cup of coffee, kick back, and figure out which package fits your vibe.

Table of Contents

What Are The Drink Packages On Norwegian Cruise Line?

There are five major drinks packages on Norwegian Cruise Line, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic. In this article, we will go through each package individually, so in the end, you can choose the best one.

  • Premium Beverage Package
  • Premium Plus Beverage Package
  • Hawaii Beverage Package
  • Unlimited Soda Package
  • Unlimited Starbucks Package

So, let’s discuss each NCL drink package one by one.

1- Premium Beverage Package

The most common drinks package on the NCL cruise is the Premium Beverage package, and this one is also known as an unlimited open bar. Mostly, folks get this package free of cost from “Free At Sea Promotion.”

You will be in luck if you get this package free. But still, you have to pay the $21 gratuity. With the premium beverage package, you can get drinks below $15.

Does the Premium Beverage Package Include Free Drinks?

Now, if you have a Premium Beverage package, you can get any drink below $15 at no cost. But for this, you have to pay a 20% beverage service charge of the value of the package.

In other words, you have to pay $21 gratuities per day for the entire package.

So let’s say you purchased this package free of cost through the “Free at Sea” promotion; you still have to pay a $21 service fee, almost $147 for a 7-day cruise.

But I don’t think it’s too much; you can savor unlimited drinks below $15 with this price tag. So, the package is still worth it.

What Is Not Included In the NCL Premium Beverage Package?

A Premium Beverage package can satisfy your taste buds; on top of that, you can enjoy unlimited drinks throughout the day.

But there are some lags in this drinks package. The Premium Beverage package doesn’t include water and Starbucks coffee, so if you’re a caffeine addict, you must opt for their drink packages.

Similarly, no room service is included in the Premium beverage package, and you must pay an additional cost if you order any drink to your stateroom.

Is the NCL Premium Beverage Package Worth It?

Yup! The Premium Beverage Package includes some exclusive drinks you can get from any bar onboard. The package is worth it if you don’t want coffee and room service.

On top of that, you will also get a 20% discount on wine and spirit experiences. Apart from this, some of the best cocktails are also included in the package. My favorite ones are Amarula Cream, Averna, Disaronno Amaretto, and Frangelico.

The Rum and Whiskey menus are also very diverse. The Crown Royal blended Canadian whiskey is my all-time favorite drink on Norwegian cruises.

The menu has countless drinks, almost the same across the Norwegian cruise fleet.

Here is the complete menu of the NCL Premium Beverage Package.

2- Norwegian Premium Plus Package

You can avail of the Premium Plus Beverage package if you want exclusive red wine, white wine, or the special rosé Champagne. With this premium drinks package, you will also get unlimited bottles of water, Starbucks coffee, and energy drinks.

Plus, the 40% discount on wine and spirits makes this package special.

If you’re a drink connoisseur, you should go for this package. The package costs you $138 excluding gratuities; with 20% gratuities, that package costs you $165 per person per day, which I think is a great deal.

The alcohol lovers will also get a premium bottle of wine with dinner. Now, here is the twist: you can enjoy as many drinks as possible throughout the day.

What Is Included In The NCL Premium Plus Drink Package

You can say that the NCL Premium Plus drink package covers all the libations available in every bar on Norwegian Cruise. Unlike the unlimited open bar package, there is no limit; you can get drinks above $15.

This package includes Starbucks coffee, energy drinks, and bottles of water. If you’re a true wine connoisseur, you can update the drink package to Premium Plus.

Some top-notch Rum, Whiskeys, and Vodkas come with this drinks package.

Is The Premium Plus Beverage Package Worth It?

Paying $138 for the Premium Plus package with $21 gratuities is worth the money. The premium wine and spirits is what makes the package so special.

Also, this package is ideal for coffee lovers, as you can get unlimited Starbucks coffees.

Nonetheless, paying $138 + $21 gratuities will become $1106 for a seven-day cruise, which I think is expensive. But for heavy alcoholic drinkers, this is still a best bet.

Check Out Premium Plus Drinks Package Menu

3- NCL Hawaii Beverage Package

Next comes the NCL Hawaii Beverage package, only available for guests sailing on Norwegian Pride of America. This drinks package is similar to the Premium Beverage and costs you $109 per person per day and a $20 gratuity.

The Hawaii Beverage package is available for all ages, so if you’re under 21 and sailing on Pride of America, you can opt for this drinks package.

What Is Included In Hawaii Beverage Package

The Hawaii Beverage package is similar to the unlimited open bar package. But this time, you can also access Starbucks’ coffee and water bottles.

But wait, coffee and water are not entirely free; with this decent package, you can enjoy Starbucks coffee for $12.95 per person daily. For water, you must pay $19.95 for six one-liter bottles and $34 for 12 one-liter bottles.

All the cocktails, juices, and other beverages below $15 are free except for a 20% gratuity.

4- Unlimited Soft Drink Package

If you don’t consume alcohol, the Unlimited soft drink package is enough to quench your thirst. It depends on your drinking habits and which drink package suits you the most.

This package lets you enjoy unlimited fountain soda and soft drinks throughout the day. You can also get the fresh juices in your breakfast and at lunch. The package is available for every age.

Is Unlimited Soft Drink Package Worth It?

Yes, if you don’t like alcohol, the Unlimited Soft drink package is worth it option.

Imagine that one cup of soda can cost you $3, and 3 – 4 cups a day cost you more than $12. So, instead of buying the fountain soda separately, go for this package. Because along with the soda, you can also access juices.

Rather, go for the Premium beverage package that costs you $20 gratuity, which becomes $140 for a seven-day cruise.

Now, you should decide whether a $9 drink package is friendly or you want to pay $140 for premium refreshments.

In a nutshell, it depends on your taste buds; if you want alcohol, then go for the Unlimited open bar offer. But if you’re under 21 or don’t like alcohol, the Unlimited soft drink package is enough.

5- Unlimited Starbucks Package

The caffeine buffs can relax their taste buds on Norwegian cruises with Starbucks coffee. The Unlimited Starbucks package is what makes that experience so special. Just $12 per person per day for unlimited caffeine experience.

With this coffee package, you won’t get any drinks, water, etc. A guest should be 18+ to get this offer. The package is only available to the Norwegian ships that have Starbucks onboard.

Cost Of Starbucks package

Normally, Starbucks coffees are expensive; a cup of latte, mocha, or iced coffee can cost around $6, and 3 – 4 cups daily will cost you $22 – $24. But with the NCL Unlimited Starbucks package, you can enjoy unlimited coffee at just $12.95.

You have to pay a 20% gratuity with every cup of coffee, which is not more than $1.

Is The Unlimited Starbucks Package Worth?

If your taste buds get relaxed with caffeine, you should opt for NCL’s unlimited Starbucks package. The $12.95 package will allow youth to savor coffee several times daily.

But if you’re not a coffee lover, don’t go for this package. Instead, avail the soft drink package or premium beverage package.

Remember that this Starbucks package only includes coffee, no other drinks. I think no one can rely only on coffee; cocktails and other libations are also a part of refreshment.

If you have the Premium Plus package at the “Free at sea” promotion, I suggest you avail of this coffee package to get an effective drink balance. The Premium Plus package won’t include coffee, so buying a $12.95 coffee package is a money-saving trick.

Final Thoughts

The Norwegian cruise drinks packages offer endless refreshments. But the catch is you must pay a 20% gratuity for every drink and cocktail. In such a scenario, the Free-at-Sea drink package is worth the money.

You will miss the coffee and water, but consider getting them separately. Yup! No gratuity. The second option is an unlimited soda or Starbucks if you love caffeine.

The only limitation of the Free-At-Sea package is that you can only get drinks up to $15. For expensive ones, you have to pay the extra along with gratuities.

How Norwegian Cruise Line’s Drink Packages Work

For new or inexperienced cruisers, understanding how drink packages work, and if they’re worth it, is a big challenge. Cruisers on Norwegian Cruise Lines have the added challenge that these cruises are marketed as having “Open bar at sea” Or “Unlimited Drink Package Included.” But is it really free? And what are the limits? We take a look at Norwegian Cruise Line’s four basic drink packages to help you better understand the differences and costs.

  • Unlimited Open Bar Package
  • Premium Plus Beverage Package
  • Soda Package
  • Unlimited Starbucks Package

You’ll find a full breakdown of the details below, but we also created this handy chart to quickly help you see the difference between the packages.

Norwegian Unlimited Open Bar Package

The Unlimited Open Bar Package, previously called the “Premium Beverage Package” is Norwegian’s most popular drink package. This is their base unlimited drink package that you get when you select the Unlimited Drink Package as part of a “Free at Sea” offer. It gives you access to a large selection of cocktails, wine, and beer at most venues on the cruise ship. Just be aware, Norwegian offers some “sail away” cabins for lower prices, but they will not include any “Free at Sea” offers. So be sure to read the forms carefully when booking. For people who don’t drink, the “sail away” rates are a great way to save some cash.

What’s Included in Norwegian’s Unlimited Open Bar Package?

Norwegian’s Unlimited Open Bar Package includes a variety of spirits and cocktails, wines by the glass, and bottled or draft beer up to $15. It also includes fountain soda, juice, and non-alcoholic beer. Below is a list of included beverages.

What Does Norwegian’s Unlimited Open Bar Package Cost?

The cost of the package is typically $109 per person per day plus 20% gratuity. The price increased from $99 per day for all sailings after January 1, 2023. If you choose this perk as part of your cruise fare, you’ll still have to pay the gratuities or $21.80 per person per day. You are able to opt out of this “free” offer when booking if you’re not a big drinker.

Is Norwegian’s Unlimited Open Bar Package Worth It?

If you’re getting the Unlimited Open Bar Package as part of a “Free at Sea” promotion, each guest in the cabin would need roughly 2 – 3 alcoholic drinks a day to break even. However, if you’re paying full price for the drink package, it’s closer to 8 – 14 drinks a day per person to get your money’s worth. Our Drink Package Calculator will run the numbers for you based on what and how much you drink.

Premium Plus Beverage Package

The Premium Plus Beverage Package is an upgraded version of Norwegian’s unlimited drink package. It includes everything in the standard package, plus a few extras. The most notable differences with this package are the inclusion of bottled water, specialty coffees, bottles of wine, and higher-end liquor.

What’s Included in the Premium Plus Beverage Package

This package includes everything above plus the following:

  • Freshly squeezed juices
  • Bottled water
  • Wine dispensers
  • Specialty coffee (including Starbucks)
  • Select bottles of wine*
  • *Non-select bottles of wine, flights, tastings, and liquor experiences will receive 40% discount

What’s Not Included in the Premium Plus Beverage Package

What Does Norwegian’s Premium Plus Beverage Package Cost?

The cost of the package is typically $138 per person per day (plus 20% gratuity). If you already have the standard Unlimited e already as part of a “Free at Sea” promotion, you can upgrade to the Premium Plus package for $29 per person per day (plus 20% gratuity).

Is Norwegian’s Premium Plus Beverage Package Worth It?

If you’re a big fan of specialty coffees, bottles of water, energy drinks, or bottles of wine, this upgrade may be worth it for you. That being said, if you’re just doing it for the non-alcoholic benefits, it still may be cheaper to pay per drink. It’d take about 4 – 5 of these extra drinks per day per person to break even. If you’re going for bottles of wine and high-end liquor, though, it pays for itself much more quickly.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Soda Package

For guests who don’t drink alcohol or guests under the age of 21, Norwegian has a soda package available. With this package, guests can have unlimited sodas around the ship. These used to be two different packages (one for adults and one for children), but in mid-2022 Norwegian combined them into one package.

What does Norwegian’s Soda Package Cover?

In September 2022, Norwegian announced it is switching to Coke products from Pepsi. The transition will be completed by the end of 2022. The soda package will include Cola, Diet Cola, Lemon Lime Soda, Ginger Ale, Tonic Water, Orange Soda & Soda Water.

What doesn’t Norwegian’s Soda Package Cover?

The package excludes basically everything but soda. This will not include juices, milkshakes, bottles of water, etc.

What Does the Norwegian’s Soda Package Cost?

Guests who get the package will pay $9.95 per person per day plus 20% gratuity.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Unlimited Starbucks Package

Norwegian’s Unlimited Starbucks package was introduced in mid-2022 and was specially made for coffee lovers.

What doesn’t Norwegian’s Unlimited Starbucks Package Cover?

The Unlimited Starbucks Package includes all the made-to-order drinks you can get from a Starbucks, including classic coffees, teas, and Frappuccinos.

What Does the Norwegian’s Unlimited Starbucks Package Cost?

The Unlimited Starbucks Package costs $12.95 per person per day (plus 20% gratuity). The Unlimited Starbucks Package does not include canned or bottled drinks, food, and merchandise. This package works at any Starbucks on a Norwegian ship as well as on Great Stirrup Cay.

Restrictions on Norwegian’s Drink Packages

All of the packages above have similar restrictions. The biggest restriction is that the package must be purchased for all guests staying within the same stateroom. That means if it’s two adults in a cabin, both will need the package. Likewise, if you’re going to be getting the soda package for children, all the children in the cabin must get the package.

Sharing of the packages with other guests is prohibited. That being said, guests are allowed to get two beverages per person per transaction.

Where Can the Norwegian Drink Packages Be Used?

The Norwegian drink packages can be used in the ship based restaurants, bars, and lounges. They can also be used while on Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island. However, they cannot be used at Harvest Caye bars, restaurants, or venues.

This seems a great deal if super premium brands and having a bottle of wine with dinner is something that appeals to you. However, I also feel the Premium Beverage Package has so many premium brands included, this is also a great deal if chosen as part of your free at sea package.

2 thoughts on “NCL Drinks Packages And Prices 2023/24”

We’re currently on NCL Epic on a Mediterranean cruise. We’ve got the free at sea package put we have to pay additional taxes and vat on every drink we have whether in port or not. We did another med cruise a few weeks ago with celebrity and weren’t charged this. Advice please.

Hi, as far as we are aware it is due to the individual ports that require collecting tax on the drink. Just recently NCL have also decided to prohibit the sale of alcohol on its ships while in UK ports. So I would imagine it has something to do with this also. Where are you sailing from?

Worth It? Complete Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) Drink Package Guide

If you’re about to sail on a Norwegian cruise, then it’s likely that you’ve already seen mentions of the drink packages for sale — or included in the “Free at Sea” offer . You might be wondering how they work and if they are worth the cost.

NCL drink package lineup

Put simply, the packages make it easy to enjoy drinks on the cruise ship without worrying about a bill. You sign up for the package and pay one set daily amount. Then you can drink almost anything on the ship — and as much as you want — without having to keep track of your tab.

But while the idea behind the drink packages on NCL is simple, there is fine print that comes along with purchasing. Meanwhile, there are no doubt other questions that come up for many passengers.

To help you figure out if the drink package is worth it — and if you want to buy it for your cruise — we’ve answered some of the most common questions.

What Drink Packages Does Norwegian Cruise Line Offer?

If you’re sailing on Norwegian and want an alcoholic drink package, then you have a few options.

The first package is the “Unlimited Open Bar Package.” This is your classic drink package that every cruise line offers. For $109 per day (or included if chosen as part of the “ Free at Sea ” offer), you get a wide variety of drinks aboard the ship.

This includes beers, wines, cocktails, and sodas plus juices. In simple terms, you can get almost anything on the ship that’s priced less than $15 per glass. And unless you have premium tastes, your favorite liquors will be included.

The alternate package is the “Premium Plus Beverage Package.” Priced at $138 per day, this is Norwegian’s more expensive and higher-end package. It includes everything in previous package, but also high-end spirits like The Macallan Quest, Zacapa 23 rum, and Starbucks coffee on the ship. You can also get a number of different bottles of wine with dinner, instead of just by the glass.

There are also additional non-alcoholic packages, including a soda package and Starbucks package for those that don’t drink alcohol.

How Much Do The Drink Packages Cost?

Drinks on a table

Whichever drink package you choose on Norwegian, you should expect to spend some cash.

The Unlimited Open Bar Package runs $109 per person, per day. In addition there is a 20% gratuity that’s tacked on to that cost. That comes out to $130.80 per day . So for a 7-day cruise, you will spend $915.60 for a single person for the Premium package.

The Premium Plus Beverage Package costs $138 per person, per day. There is also the same 20% gratuity that is automatically added. For this package, you’ll spend $165.60 each day when the gratuity is added, for a total of $1,159.20 for a week-long cruise.

However, with the Free at Sea offer (covered below) and other discounts, many people don’t end up paying this amount.

Members of NCL’s Latitudes Rewards program also receive an instant 30%-50% discount on the price of the Unlimited Open Bar Package. So if you’ve sailed as little as one night with the cruise line, you’ll pay significantly less for the offer.

What’s the Difference Between the Drink Packages?

While the drink packages are similar, they are not the same. Let’s start with the Unlimited Open Bar Package , which is going to be the most popular on the ship.

This package provides drinks ranging from sodas to beers to cocktails to glasses of wine. What it doesn’t include are the highest-end spirits as drinks over $15 per glass. Also notably absent is bottled water, fresh-squeezed juices (other juices are included), and premium coffees like Starbucks that are served on the ship. However, if you’re wanting the package to drink beers, have some glasses of wine with dinner, or a margarita by the pool, then you’ll be covered.

For those who want pretty much anything on the ship, then you might be interested in stepping up to the Premium Plus Beverage Package . Here, you get everything included in the lower-tier package, but also higher-end spirits included (no per glass limits are mentioned), as well as juices, bottled water, Starbucks drinks, energy drinks, and even some bottles of wine when dining.

What’s Not Included in the Drink Package?

As explained above, different packages will have different exclusions. Where you’ll find the most surprising exclusions is that the Unlimited Open Bar Package doesn’t include things like Starbucks coffee, bottled water, fresh-squeezed juices, or energy drinks. These are included on the Premium Plus Beverage Package.

Also, neither package includes anything in the mini-bar or room service beverages.

What if My Drink Is More Than $15 Per Glass?

The Unlimited Open Bar Package has a limit of up to $15 per drink (menu price, before gratuity). If you purchase a drink that’s more than $15 on the menu, you’ll be charged the excess over $15.

So an $18 drink would cost you $3, plus the 20% gratuity on the extra amount. Fortunately, this includes only some drinks on the cruise.

It may be the case that getting this package and paying a few bucks more for some drinks would be a better deal in the long run than buying the more expensive Premium Plus offer.

Is Gratuity Included in the Cost?

Drink on a Norwegian cruise

Gratuity is not included in the headline price. On Norwegian, the drink packages carry a hefty 20% gratuity charge in addition to the base price. So for a $109 a day drink package, you’ll actually pay $130.80 per person. For the $138 drink package, you’ll pay $165.60 each day.

When you order your drink, however, the gratuity is already taken care of. There’s no need to tip additionally unless you simply want to show some more appreciation of the bar staff.

What If I Get the Drink Package Through the Free at Sea Offer? Do I Pay Anything?

Norwegian’s Free at Sea offer has proven popular, and the cruise line has continued to offer it for quite some time now. Put simply, the Free at Sea program gives you your choice of free perks, ranging from a free drink package to free Internet to free/discounted airfare.

If you get the drink package for free, just know that you will have to pay the gratuity on the package, despite the cost being free . In this case, the $109 Unlimited Open Bar Package charge is waived, but the daily gratuity of $21.80 per person, per day (20% of the advertised price) still applies.

So on a week-long cruise your “free” drink package would actually run $152.60.

Don’t want to pay that? You can refuse the package when booking and avoid the charge.

Does Everyone in the Cabin Have to Purchase the Package If One Person Does?

Yes. Likely as a way to limit the sharing that would otherwise go on, Norwegian requires all adults in the cabin to purchase the beverage package if one person does.

If you have a situation where one person wants the package and the other person doesn’t, then we suggest giving the cruise line a call to explain the situation. They may not be able to help, but we have heard stories on some cruise lines of being able to offer leniency on buying the package if you explain your situation.

We would especially think a health situation (such as one person being pregnant) would help your case on not having to buy two drink packages.

Also, if someone is under 21 years old on your cruise then they must purchase the soda package if the adults buy an alcoholic package.

How Do I Buy the Package?

Buying the package is easy. Before your trip you can purchase the package online through your account. Don’t want to do that? You can also call the cruise line and get the package ordered so that you can enjoy it once you step on the ship. Finally, you can order the package on the ship once you arrive.

Can I Share Drinks?

No. It’s tempting to think that one person will simply buy the expensive package and then slip their partner drinks when they want them. This is against the rules.

How will the cruise line be able to tell if you are sharing? Truth is that it can be hard for them to catch unless you are simply extremely obvious. This is likely why Norwegian Cruise Line makes all people in a cruise cabin buy the package if one person does. It minimizes the problem of sharing between people.

Do I Have to Buy the Package for the Entire Cruise?

Yes. It would be nice if you could simply buy the drink package on the days you wanted it. For instance, maybe you want to take a break from drinking for a day or plan on being in port and away from the ship. We wish you could not have to pay for the package on days like these.

Instead, you must purchase the drink package for the entire cruise — not just select days.

How Many Drinks Can I Buy a Day?

Tiki glass

Some cruise lines put limits on the number of drinks you can purchase in a day with the drink package (notably Carnival limits passengers to 15 alcoholic drinks in a 24-hour period). We’ve heard of no such limit for Norwegian. Searching through the terms shows no mention. However, if you are obviously inebriated, don’t be surprised if the bartender refuses to serve you.

This unlimited rule applies to both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. So you can also buy as many non-alcoholic beverages as you want.

How Many Drinks Can I Buy at One Time?

Norwegian allows those with the drink package to order two drinks at the same time. Want a beer and a margarita? Or just simply want to try a couple of glasses of wine? Or maybe you just don’t want to have to get up to get another beer after you finish the first one? No matter, you can get two drinks in one transaction .

Does the Package Work on Harvest Caye and Great Stirrup Cay?

Norwegian Cruise Line has two private islands that it visits — Harvest Caye and Great Stirrup Cay .

On Harvest Caye there are a number of bars and restaurants, but even though the island is a private destination for NCL, the drink package will not work here . You have to purchase any beverages out of pocket. Of course, you could always head back to the ship while docked and get a drink, but that’s a long walk.

That said, the package does work on Great Stirrup Cay . Like Harvest Caye, the island is a private destination and has a number of bars for you to enjoy, and it’s a nice perk that the package extends to the island. This is a great way to help you get your money’s worth even if you aren’t on the ship.

Is Norwegian’s Drink Package Worth It?

Of course the big question is whether or not the NCL drink package is worth it. The answer to that depends a lot on your personal habits when you’re on vacation. It will also depend on if you get the Free at Sea offer.

Here’s some general details on whether you’ll find the package worth it for you…

First, consider how you drink when you are on a vacation . For example, some people don’t feel like they are on vacation unless they have a drink in their hand. Others may drink heavily here and there, but like to take breaks on some days. The thing to remember is that you pay for the drink package each day of the cruise. So if you like to drink but also take breaks on some days, then you might not get your money’s worth.

Second, you want to factor in whether or not the second person in the cabin will have to buy the package and if they will use it . Say a husband wants the package but has a wife who barely drinks. In this case, you may not get your money’s worth as it is essentially paying twice for one drink package.

Finally, you want to run the possible math on how much you’d spend with the drink package versus without the package .

At $109 ($130.80 with gratuity) per person, per day for the basic package, Norwegian has one of the most expensive packages around. But many people get the package for free with the Free at Sea offer. And then there is a sharp discount for members of NCL’s loyalty program should you buy the package a la carte. No matter what you pay, it’s important to have a handle on what you’d spend and compare it to the drink package price.

On the ship, beers run $6-7. Wine runs $10-15 a glass, and cocktails run $11-12 each. If you’re paying full price for the drink package, you can see that you have to drink a considerable amount each day to breakeven.

If you want some help in estimating what you’d spend, see our Cruise Drink Package Calculator here . It will give you an idea of how much you’d spend on everything from water to soda to beer to cocktails and compare it to the package price.

is there a list of alcohol sales for the different NCL ports ?

Question: With the room service on NCL-Bliss do I tip separately or is it included? Also is there a “room service fee” added besides the tip? Thanks! I at least like to have my coffee in the morning without having to get dressed to go & get it! That’s what vacations are all about!

Per NCL’s website:

Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced an enhanced room service menu. The new menu offers an expanded selection for breakfast, in addition to a wider variety of options available 24 hours. Individual items on the menu remain available on a complimentary basis and a convenience charge of up to $9.95 USD will be added to each order placed (Morning coffee, continental breakfast and orders placed by guests sailing in The Haven will not attract a charge)*. A 20% gratuity and beverage service charge will be added for non-complimentary beverages and special occasion items.

If you’re ordering complimentary and not charged anything, a few bucks to the person that brings it would be a nice gesture!

What about those who only drink soft drinks? Is there a package price or what is the individual price ?

Yes, there is a soda package for $10 per day.

Do the drinks packages include non alcoholic beers?

Yes, those should be covered. However, not sure how many options you would have. On our last cruise on NCL this summer, we noticed only Heineken 0.0.

I am Just finishing my NCL cruise and the premium plus package should be better . You need to be quite specific about wanting premium drinks . There is no rose champagne in the ship and last night I could not get a glass of champagne at all as they said they had none (when they did it was Moët not verve ). I asked for a glass of champagne at the champagne bar and they tried to give me a bad cava or Prosecco and again said they only had champagne in the restaurants , and the French restaurant had none . It was also difficult to get a bottle of wine , but may be easier with a bigger party. If they bring a glass you need to ask to see them pour as one night I was served something that wasn’t the Louis Jadot I asked for but a cheap Chardonnay . I don’t want to sound a snob but I like quality not quantity and I don’t think NCL staff are catering for this as well as quantity . If you like whisky and other spirits there are some nice ones on the plus package . But I am cruising friends next year on their first cruise. They love champagne and I will be really embarrassed if I encourage them to do plus package and they ship runs out of champagne .

Overall I feel Service standards have declined in the speciality restaurants post lockdown .

Hey, just wondering if you can help, I’m trying to plot my first cruise. I want to have everything paid for before embarking, so have chosen the free at sea drink package and to prepay my service charge. But am now confused. Will the 20 percent gratuity for the free drink package be added on on the ship? Or is it included upfront when I book? I tried deseleting the drink package and comparing prices but my total was the same, with or without the package. Thanks!

If sailing from the United States, then the gratuity for the free package (about $20 per day) is added onto the cost of the cruise when you book.

My cruise came with Free Premium drink package/Open Bar, but I do not drink. Will I still be charge the gratuities for drinking water? I always use drink flavors (Liquid IV) whenever I want something outside of plain water, so I have no need for anything else.

On cruises from the United States, you are charged gratuity. You can “deselect” the drink package when booking to avoid the charge. If you are unsure, it doesn’t hurt to call the cruise line to make an adjustment.

If you get the “Free at Sea” Premium Drink package, can you UP-grade it to the Premium PLUS package on-board? i.e., pay the difference from $99/day to $128/day or do you have to “start over”?

We just called the cruise line. You can book the Free at Sea and then once on board you can arrange to upgrade to the Premium Plus and pay the difference between the two (plus gratuity).

Cruise drink packages: A line-by-line guide

Gene Sloan

It's easy to run up a monster bill ordering wine, beer and mixed drinks by the glass on a cruise ship. The cost of alcoholic drinks on cruise vessels — particularly cocktails — can be pricey. But for those who regularly order several alcoholic drinks a day when cruising, there's a way to save: a flat-fee drink package.

Nearly all the major mass-market cruise lines offer flat-fee drink packages that, in some cases, can save you money when cruising. The exceptions are Disney Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages , though both offer alternative ways to save on beverage purchases.

What's included in a cruise ship drink package, and how do they work? And, perhaps more to the point, how much do cruise drink packages cost? Read on for the answers in this ultimate guide to cruise drink packages.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

For a line-by-line guide to drink package costs, inclusions, limitations and fine print, scroll to the second half of the guide.

What is a drink package on a cruise ship?

Cruise ship drink packages let you order as many drinks as you want while on a cruise for one flat fee. This takes the place of paying for drinks one at a time.

At some lines, there are several tiers of drink packages. Basic tiers often include just sodas and bottled water. More elaborate (and expensive) tiers will add alcoholic and nonalcoholic cocktails, wine, beer and specialty coffee drinks. In some cases, there will be more than one tier of such all-encompassing plans.

Some lines also offer coffee cards that let you get a fixed number of fancy coffee drinks at a shipboard coffee bar for a discounted price. Some also offer wine-specific packages.

How much do alcoholic drink packages cost on cruise ships?

The cost of cruise ship drink packages varies widely by line. At several of the biggest cruise brands, including Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America , the main drink packages that include all types of drinks cost about $60 per person per day. Other brands, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , charge as much as $138 per person per day for a top-tier package.

Drink packages that don't include alcoholic drinks, such as soda packages, typically cost far less. Soda packages often are under $10 per person per day. Note that some cruise lines discount drink packages if you buy them online in advance of sailing, and others offer periodic sales on their drink packages online.

Can you buy drinks on a cruise without a drink package?

norwegian cruise line drink prices 2023

Yes. All major cruise lines will let you buy drinks on an a la carte basis when cruising. You don't need a drink package to be able to drink alcoholic beverages or any other type of beverage on a ship.

Can you share a drink package on a cruise ship?

In many cases, no. Several of the biggest cruise lines, including Carnival, Holland America and MSC Cruises, have a rule that if one adult in a cabin orders a drink package, all adults in the cabin must order the package. This is to prevent two or more people in a cabin from sharing a single drink package.

Two lines that notably don't have such a rule are Princess Cruises and Windstar Cruises . Technically, you are not supposed to use your package to buy drinks for other people.

Are drink packages on cruise ships really unlimited?

It depends. Some cruise lines, such as Carnival, limit the number of alcoholic drinks that any one person can order using a drink package to 15 in a day. That is, of course, an enormous number — more than most people will ever want to order.

Where can you use a cruise ship drink package?

Cruise ship drink packages generally are honored anywhere you can order a drink on a ship — think bars, lounges and eateries. However, you usually can't use them when ordering room service. They also generally don't apply to drinks taken out of cabin minibars. Be sure to check the fine print in your particular line's drink package before placing an order for a drink to your room.

Some cruise lines also let you use your packages when visiting their private islands .

MSC Cruises does not add service charges to drink package purchases, in contrast to the policy at most lines.

Fine print: If one person in a cabin purchases a package, all people in the same cabin or traveling group also must purchase a package (children in cabins will be charged for a less expensive, nonalcoholic package). Packages are not available on sailings shorter than three nights, with the exception of South America sailings. Note that the package is valid on Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve , MSC Cruises' private island in the Bahamas.

Today’s Bonus Cruising Tip

I ALWAYS buy travel insurance to cover my cruises, but I NEVER purchase it through a cruise line. It costs more and usually covers less than policies you purchase on your own. I go through sites like  travelinsurance.com  to compare plans and prices and get the best deal for the coverage I want. Spend less on insurance and spend more on excursions, special onboard cruise experiences and…future cruises!

Norwegian's Giving Joy Programme

Each year during Teacher Appreciation Week, NCL launches Norwegian's Giving Joy contest inviting the public to nominate a deserving educator and recognise their incredible efforts within their classrooms. Since 2019, the programme has received over 58,000 teacher nominations, over 1.8 million votes, awarded more than 250 educators with the holiday of a lifetime, and donated over $445,000 to educators and their schools which has truly helped make an impact in each of their communities. In addition to the prizes, the nomination platform itself recognises hundreds of spectacular individuals, who all too often go underappreciated and unrecognized.

Norwegian Giving Joy winner Ryan Price

RYAN PRICE BUCKINGHAM COLLEGIATE CHARTER ACADEMY | VACAVILLE, CA

Mr. Price is an amazing teacher. He takes time out of his day to make sure our class is enjoyable and that English is understandable. He makes sure we're comfortable in his class and works so hard just to be able to provide us with the top-tier education that we as Buckingham students thoroughly enjoy. He deserves a holiday and a rest from the difficult but rewarding life of a teacher, which is why I nominate Mr. Price for the cruise prize on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Norwegian Giving Joy winner Carolyn Reardon.

CAROLYN REARDON JAMES OTIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | CHICAGO, IL

Ms. Reardon is a fantastic music educator. Working in the Chicagoland area for over 7 years in general music band and orchestra, she takes programmes that have nothing and makes them into ones that are highly sought-after. Her drive and dedication to her students are unparalleled. Ms. Reardon deserves the world for all that she does for her students. She creates a loving, compassionate, and inclusive space that encourages her students to become the creative souls they were meant to be. Ms. Reardon has worked so hard for 7 years. It's time for her efforts to be honoured and a cruise would be the perfect gift to such an inspiring educator.

Norwegian Giving Joy winner Angelo Mirante.

ANGELO MIRANTE LAKEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL | ARLINGTON, WA

"I was put on this earth to be a teacher. Educators have always had an impact on me, especially when I needed it most. I know the power teachers hold to inspire and motivate students in the right direction. This is not a job or career; in my mind, this is my passion. I make students feel welcome in the classroom and I truly connect with them. If they know I "see" them for who they are, they will succeed. My classroom is full of movie, music and sport posters of all genders and races. The classroom community I build throughout the year makes all students from all walks of life comfortable and happy to be here. This philosophy makes them want to learn. In my opinion, a teacher won't get anywhere with a student if no connection pursues."
