Tokyo National Museum of Nature and Science online

The Japanese National Museum of Nature and Science located in Tokyo’s Ueno district has made its very own extensive VR tour available on its site which provides guided visits around 2 different areas of the space.

These include the 4-storey Japanese Pavilion which explores the country’s wildlife and contains a large collection of dinosaur fossils from Japan, as well as a tour of the 11-storey Global Pavilion , which begins in a room full of exotic taxidermied animals.

One of the unique features of this museums’ virtual experience is that the angle of the cameras is set up to mimic a child’s eye view , making it easy for even the youngest visitors to read the exhibition descriptions and enjoy the full experience.

There is now a wide range of other virtual tours of Japanese museums available online, including the unique Tottori Sand Museum and its intricate sand sculptures, and the chance to interact with a variety of interactive exhibits courtesy of Miraikan, also known as the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.

However, one of the most extensive online collections in Japan comes courtesy of the Tokyo National Museum, which has made much of its over 100,000 pieces of art available through a virtual tour, which includes a walk-through of the famous Horyuji Treasures Gallery.

Maki-do Cave virtual tour

An attraction off the beaten path that you may not otherwise get around to visiting while in Japan, the Maki-do caves are located in Nimi, Okayama Prefecture and stretch back 450 meters into limestone rock.

Also known as the ‘Dream Palace’, you can now visit the caves’ illuminated underground lake and dramatic stalactites from the comfort of your own home with an online 3D guide.

Hiroshima’s Shukkei-en Garden online panoramic

Opened to the public in 1940, Shukkei-en is a historic garden located in Hiroshima adjacent to the Prefectural Art Museum . Although it suffered damage during the nuclear attack on the city in 1945, it was reopened in 1951 after a complete renovation.

Shukkei-en roughly translates to ‘miniature scenery’ in English, which is apt because the gardens represent scaled-down versions of Japan’s forests, mountains, and valleys . It’s now possible to follow the path around the extensive gardens and its central lake online.

Shinkansen live cam

If you want to get an idea of the lightning-fast speed of the Shinkansen bullet trains before you use the services for yourself, you can now do so by accessing a live cam located railside in Settsu-city, Osaka .

Focused on the Taikai Depot, spectators have an up-close view of the Main Line on which the Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen operate ,either in the direction of Kyoto, Nagoya and Tokyo, or to Shin-Osaka and Hakata, and you can also occasionally spot the rare Shinkansen maintenance vehicles which run at night.

You can also view an up-close look at the interior of a Shinkansen First Class cabin on Google street view, to get an idea of the high level of comfort you can expect to experience when traveling on these trains throughout Japan.

Tokyo Tower online tour

One of the most iconic attractions in Japan’s capital, the Tokyo Tower attracts around 2 million annual visitors , who flock to the top of the structure for the spectacular views of the surrounding city.

And thanks to the Google Streetview, you can now sidestep COVID-19 restrictions and take a virtual tour of the inside of the Tower and enjoy the city skyline for yourself without having to leave your sofa.

Without a doubt Japan’s most iconic natural attraction, Mount Fuji welcomes thousands of visitors each year , many of whom scale its conical summit during the traditional climbing season from July to mid-September.

Although the climbing season for Mt. Fuji was cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, hiking enthusiasts have still been able to virtually explore its slopes through the Google Street View platform and experience a stunning sunset on its summit without having to put on their mountain boots.

• Currency: Yen (JP¥ / ¥)
• Japan uses the same plugs as in the U.S. but they have a different voltage (100 vs. 120 in the U.S.)

Visa requirements

There are 66 countries in total whose citizens do not require a visa to enter Japan, but the time you can stay depends on which country you’re from.

• Citizens from many countries (including the U.S.A., the U.K., Canada, and Australia) get a visa exemption (aka FREE) 90-day tourist visa, provided they will not be working in Japan.
• Other countries get a temporary tourist visa for a period of 15 days or less.

Language in Japan & useful phrases

The language in Japan is, quite obviously, Japanese. But many people in big cities, like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka also speak English. Signs are written in Japanese characters, and in the cities most have their Roman counterparts.

When traveling, we always try to learn a couple important phrases. It shows locals you are trying to learn about their country and it can be fun too!

These phrases are ones we have found to be the most useful in any location we visit:

Manners and customs in Japan

When traveling in a country other than your own, it is always a good idea to do a little research on what is polite so that you don’t accidentally offend people like this.

Here are couple manners to keep in mind when traveling to Japan:

• Eating while you walk is considered sloppy. Instead, find a place to sit and enjoy your snack.
• Pointing is considered rude. Instead, use an open hand to make gestures.
• Blowing your nose in public can be considered rude. Japanese people often go into the bathroom to blow a stuffy nose.
• On a crowded subway or train, it is polite to take off your backpack and hold it in your hands.
• Slurping noodles not only cools them down as you eat, but it indicates that the meal is delicious. So slurp away, it’s the polite thing to do!
• Taking off your shoes is common courtesy before entering many places. If the floor is raised at the doorway, it is an indicator that you should remove your shoes.

In Japan, tips are not expected, and can even be considered rude. And even if the server is not offended, they will likely be confused.

So in other words, NO , you should not tip in Japan. 

Religion in Japan

Buddhism and Shinto are the main religions in Japan, though they don’t play a huge role in the lives of many Japanese people today.

All throughout the country, you can visit temples and shrines to get a better understanding of the religions and culture. You can even do a temple stay in order to really delve in and learn about Buddhism.

Spring is considered by many as a great time to visit Japan for its comfortable temperatures, cherry blossoms and little chance of rain.

One thing you should be aware of is the so-called “Golden Week” which happens in the springtime and is made up of 4 national holidays which fall into a 7-day span. During this week many Japanese people will also be traveling around the country and accommodation and tours are often booked far in advance.

Best Time to Visit Japan: When to Go & When to Avoid!

Choosing the best time of year to visit Japan can be downright overwhelming. Each of Japan’s 4 distinct seasons has its draws and drawbacks. We’re going to break down exactly what to expect during each season so you can choose the best time to visit Japan based on your travel style and interests.

Traveling in Japan is a little different than many other places in the world.

By nature, we tend to be somewhat last-minute travelers, but not when planning a trip to Japan. If possible, we recommend planning your trip to Japan well in advance.

Now, this isn’t to say you can’t plan a trip to Japan at the last minute, but your options for great accommodation (especially in popular areas) will be limited. Plus, you may miss out on some of the most popular attractions because many require advanced booking and tickets go quickly. 

We’ve laid out our recommended timeline for planning a trip to Japan so you can ensure you’re able to secure some incredible accommodation and do all the things on your bucket list.

This timeline is a suggestion, but you can certainly adjust dates a bit. Hopefully this gives you a better idea of how far in advance to plan your trip to Japan.

1 year before your trip

• Start researching and draw up your dream itinerary
• Make a note of how far in advance the ryokans you like open up reservations 
• Flag any attractions that are “must dos” for you
• Check out our Japan budget article to get started

• Insider Tip: Sign up for a mistake fare newsletter and set Tokyo as an “alert city” so you can get notified of any really good deals departing from your home airport.

The research phase should be fun and you don’t want to feel rushed. We recommend recording all the hotels and attractions you want to prioritize in a Google Doc so you don’t lose any of your research. 

Coming up with a budget will help you determine which accommodations you can realistically book and it will help you start saving for this trip.

6 months before your trip

• Flights: If you are flying from afar, aim to book your flights around 6 months prior to your trip. We’d recommend keeping an eye on them for a couple of months (starting 10 months before your trip).
• Ryokans: Many ryokans only release booking dates 3-6 months ahead of time. Really great ryokans fully book up quickly after dates are released.
• Accommodation in small towns (like on the Nakasendo Trail)
• Hotels near any major attraction or popular area (at DisneySea, or near Mount Fuji)
• Special hotels that you really want to stay at (like the Park Hyatt in Tokyo , or a temple stay at Koyasan)
• Accommodations that fall over festival dates or popular tourist seasons, like Golden Week (which falls during Japan’s cherry blossom blooms )

It can feel a little overwhelming to make these big bookings all at once, but it will ensure you are able to stay where you’d like and secure good prices on flights. 

Booking tips: When possible, we like to use Booking.com since many hotels offer free cancellation via this platform (often up until just days before your stay). Also, you often don’t have to pay at the moment of booking, which makes the commitment a little less scary. We typically like to compare the price on Booking.com to Agoda , as they sometimes differ. We also stayed at a couple of Airbnbs in Japan , which was a good option in the more rural areas.

2-3 months before your trip

• All accommodation not yet booked: the sooner the better for the best locations and prices
• Japan Rail Pass : You can purchase this pass up to 3 months before the date you’ll use it . We personally got ours 2 months in advance so it wasn’t left until the last minute.
• FYI: we have lots of advice and info about renting a car in Japan
• Tickets go on sale 3 months in advance
• If you want best available times slots (we recommend the first one at 9-9:30 a.m. ), book at least 2 months ahead of time
• Compare availability on the teamLab website (tickets available further in advance) and on GetYourGuide
• Tickets go on sale roughly 5 months in advance. We recommend booking at least 2-3 months in advance for the best availability of time slots.
• Compare availability on the Warner Bros Studio website and on Klook
• This will mean you don’t have to wait in crazy long lines, and we’ve heard it’s very worthwhile at this notoriously crowded theme park. Purchase it here .

1 month before your trip

• Tickets go on sale on the 10th of each month for the following month
• We recommend setting an alarm to purchase tickets as they become available on the 10th of the month before your trip so you don’t miss out.
• You cannot purchase tickets onsite (you must have advance reservations)
• Tickets go on sale 1 month in advance
• The most popular time slot is right before sunset and those times go quickly
• Compare availability on the Shibuya Sky website and on Klook
• Popular theme restaurants like Ninja Restaurant (Tokyo) or the Pokémon Café (Tokyo & Osaka)
• Insider tip: For the restaurants on your “must” list, research and write down how far in advance reservations are available (some may even require booking further than 1 month in advance). Set alarms in your calendar so you can be sure to snag a spot right away. Popular places fill up very fast!

• Kyoto : Considered the “cultural capital of Japan”, Kyoto is packed with history, important temples, gorgeous architecture and a charming atmosphere. If you are traveling with your little ones, there are tons of things to do in Kyoto with kids .
• Osaka : Another major hub to fly in and out of Japan, Osaka is worth a visit . Known for lively nightlife and endless street food, there’s a lot more to discover beyond Osaka’s neon-lit facade. 
• Hakone: At the footsteps of Mt. Fuji, Hakone is a peaceful retreat from the big cities of Japan and a chance to relax in an onsen and sleep in a ryokan.

• Soak in an Onsen: Strip down to your birthday suit and soak in a hot tub until you get pruney. Don’t worry, they are gender separated and some are even private. The best one we dipped in was in the Hakone region .
• Stay at a Ryokan: Experience a traditional Japanese-style inn and stay in a ryokan to enjoy Japanese hospitality and relaxation.

• Sleep in a Temple: Usually taken as retreats to refresh your body and mind or deepen understanding of religion, temple stays are an unique experience you won’t forget.

Unique experiences in nature

• See the Nara Deer: Just a little ways outside of Osaka in the city of Nara , there is a park (and part of the city) literally flooded with cute spotted deer. They’re used to being around humans, but make sure you read these tips before visiting the Nara deer.
• Jigokudani Snow Monkeys: A few miles away from Nagano, there is a park where the local macaques monkeys soak in a spring-fed hot tub and play around in the snow.
• Hike the Kumano Kodo Trail : If you’re feeling adventurous, this is quite literally, off the beaten path. The Kumano Kodo Trail is a historic pilgrimage through the mountainous Kii Peninsula that has been trekked for thousands of years.

I’ll be straight to the point: Japan is not cheap.  

Contrary to many other destinations in Asia, like Thailand or the Philippines , Japan is not an ideal location for budget travelers. That said, it is unlike any country in the world and totally worth visiting. 

Typical daily budget for Japan

Below is an estimated breakdown of (about) how much money you should plan to budget for a trip to Japan based on your travel style. 

*Note: These are estimations for one person and do not include flights.

• You’ll stay in hostel dorm beds, grab breakfast from one of the many 7-Eleven’s or Family Marts, and do as many free activities as possible.
• You’ll be staying in comfortable, though not fancy, hotels or Airbnbs . You’ll want to try lots of Japanese food—both budget meals and a couple nicer ones too. You will use public transportation to get around and you want to see as much as possible, but you’re willing to make some sacrifices to save money.
• Budget isn’t too much of a concern for you. This isn’t necessarily luxury travel, but you are willing to pay more money for convenience and comfort; and splurging on unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences is not a problem for you.

Are credit cards accepted in Japan?

Yes, but hold up… 

Major credit cards will typically be accepted at big hotel chains, nice restaurants or shops in large cities, but you’ll want to have cash on hand to use in small restaurants, markets or in more rural towns. 

There are still many places where credit cards are not accepted, so it is a good idea not to rely on plastic alone.

Should I get money from my bank before my trip to Japan?

This is a question we get all the time. The answer really comes down to your personal preference, but we never get money out in advance before international travel.

Whenever we enter a new country, we walk right past the Currency Exchange counters (they are a huge rip off most of the time!) and we go to an ATM to withdraw cash. You will get the best exchange rate by withdrawing foreign currency from an ATM.

If the thought of showing up in a new country without cash on hand makes your hands sweaty, then by all means ignore this advice and grab some yen from your home bank before you leave.

But I will say that airports always have ATMS, and they are easy to find in train stations as well as in 7-Eleven’s and Family Marts in most big Japanese cities. 

Before heading to a rural town though, be sure to take out cash just in case you can’t find an ATM.

Credit card travel tips

• Turn on travel notification: Be sure to alert your bank ahead of time that you will be traveling, and where, so they know your transactions aren’t fraud.
• Have a backup card: It’s a good idea to carry more than one card in case you have an issue with one of them. Remember to always pack them in two different places within your luggage — for example, one in your wallet and another in your backpack so if one gets lost or stolen, you still have access to the other.
• Invest in a debit card with no fees: We have a checking account with Charles Schwab , and they reimburse every single ATM fee. This means we never have to take out more money than we feel comfortable with carrying at a time. Try looking into accounts with similar benefits. It will save you so much money on your travels.

Money-saving tips for Japan

While it’s not a cheap country to visit, there are certainly ways you can save money while traveling in Japan.

• This article breaks down how much the Japan Rail Pass costs and how to purchase it .
• Get your breakfasts and snacks at 7-Eleven or Family Mart (they are everywhere around the country!). While you might never consider eating at a convenience store in your home country, the fresh food options are surprisingly good at these stores in Japan. I’m not joking. You’ll see many locals doing the same.
• Have your biggest meal midday and take advantage of “lunch sets” which often consist of a large meal (sometimes with a dessert) and are typically between $5-7 USD.
• Conveyor belt sushi is a good way to try all the types of sushi your little heart (and stomach!) desire without a huge price tag. Plus, it’s a fun experience in itself!
• Use an app to record your spending and see how well you’re staying on top of your budget! We find it’s much easier to overspend when you don’t know how much it’s all adding up to. We love Trail Wallet for recording our expenses. (We’re not affiliated with them, we just love using it ourselves!)
• Download a converter app on your phone like this one to see the exact exchange rate for your selected currency at the time of your trip, so you always know exactly what you are spending. 

The trains and metros in Japan are some of the cleanest and most efficient in the world , and the rail system covers almost the entire country making it a very efficient way to get around. 

However, transportation is one of the biggest expenses to factor into your Japan travel budget .

Renting a car

While we love the ease and efficiency of Japan’s public transportation system, we rented a car during our most recent trip to Japan and we absolutely loved it.

Having our own car was really convenient, especially now that we’re traveling with a toddler . Plus, it gave us the opportunity to get off the beaten path and explore places with very few tourists that would be difficult to visit via public transportation.

Do I need travel insurance for Japan?

While it’s not required to enter the country, we always recommend purchasing travel insurance before any trip. It is a small price to pay for the peace of mind you’ll have knowing you will be covered in case of an emergency or if anything is stolen.

How safe is Japan?

Japan is overall very safe and crime is low. 

I once met a girl who was an English teacher in Tokyo, and she said she left her wallet in a train station. It sat there, untouched, and the next day when she retraced her steps it was in the same (heavily trafficked) place she had left it. 

But even though theft isn’t common in Japanese culture, that doesn’t mean it can’t happen to you. As with any place in the world, always be aware of your surroundings and use common sense. 

This is another reason we always recommend getting travel insurance to make sure you’re covered in case anything gets stolen or you run into other emergencies.

Do I need a power converter in Japan?

In Japan the standard voltage is 100 V and the power sockets are type A and B (pictured below). The socket is the same used in North America, but the voltage is lower, so yes you will need a power converter for electronics that don’t already have a converter. 

This website is a super helpful resource when it comes to electricity all around the world. Simply select your home country and it will tell you if you need a converter and/or plug adapter for your visit to Japan. 

We recommend this all-in-one converter-adapter that works in any country. This means you only need one item no matter where your travels take you!

What are the bathrooms like in Japan?

This might be an embarrassing question to ask out loud, but I promise you aren’t the only one thinking it. If it’s your first time visiting Japan, you likely have no idea what to expect when it comes to bathrooms. 

The good news is, many bathrooms around the country are very nice and quite… luxurious . 

In nicer restrooms, you’ll find toilets equipped with a built-in bidet to spray your bum. And some toilets even have buttons that will play music or rainforest sounds to cover up, well, you know…

Be warned though that in some train stations or in more rural parts of the country, you may find squat toilets similar to ones you’d find in many places around Asia. 

How to get cell phone service in Japan

There are two common options for staying connected to data while traveling in Japan: pocket Wifi and local SIM card. This article does a great job of comparing the two and giving our honest opinions about which worked best for us.

• Google Translate : This is a go-to app for us while traveling in Asia because you can take a photograph of the characters on a menu or label and it will translate for you. Be warned that some things don’t quite translate into English all that well…
• Google Navigation : Can give you the best routes for the metro and trains and even has live updates on delays.
• Hyperdia : The go-to train scheduling app/website in Japan. Plug in a route and it will tell you the times throughout the day and the prices, including each seating class.

Nara was mind-blowing! The Deer, walking up to you, begging for food, the Mochi pull at the mall and all the beautiful Temples. Unfortunately, it rained during our visit, but I still look at the pictures and think about how lucky I am to have seen this.

What an amazing and extensive post. I would like to add something to the foodie part. Japanese food is amazing, and while you can try delicious things in Tokyo, every region and city has its specialties. For real foodies I would suggest visiting the following cities and trying the following foods: Osaka – Osaka style Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki Kobe – Kobe Beef (other regions also have amazing Wagyu) Hiroshima – Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki and Oysters Nagoya – Hitsumabushi and everything with red Miso like Miso Nikomi Udon Fukuoka – Hakata Ramen Of course, there is much much more but these are the foodie highlights of Japan.

As someone that had lived in Okinawa (Military posting) for two years, I never got to travel around Japan. I’m planning on a trip next year. Should I have one AirBnB that I use as my ‘home’ for my trip (I’ll be in Japan for about 3 or 4 weeks) or should I only book spots for a couple of days while I travel around the country?

If we may add just add some safety issues for fellow travellers to watch out for, mainly do be aware of some of the bar scams and bill padding that happen in Roppongi and Shinjuku, as well as donation touts/scammers. May everyone enjoy Japan!

Great and useful information about travelling through Japan! But are you sure that a two-way trip from Tokyo to Kyoto covers the price of the 1 week JR-Pass? Maybe it depends on your location, but where I am from (NL) it seems cheaper to buy two separate tickets. Especially considering that you cannot take the fastest Shinkansen (Nozomi) when using the JR-Pass.

Hey there JapanYo, the round trip ticket from Kyoto to Tokyo is basically the same price as the one week JRail Pass. And if you are traveling anywhere else in Japan, even intercity, if you have the pass, you can think of all your other train trips are free, since you can ride JRail unlimited times within the week.

And you still can ride the Shinkansen Bullet Trains with the pass, the only one it excludes is Nozomi.

Hope this information helps others choose what’s best for them when traveling to Japan.

A colourful night life walk in and around the newly rennovated Hankyu Kobe-Sannomiya Station in Kobe. Featuring the newly built Hankyu Remm+ Kobe Sannomiya Hotel, and new bars and restaurants on the main and back streets.

The city was home to famous yokai (strange apparition) creator Mizuki Shigeru and it really celebrates him and his work. Would be great fun spending Halloween here!

Turbulent Times at 30,000 feet

It was only when walking onto the plane I felt I could believe this was actually happening and relax.

Flying with Japan Airlines (JAL) from London, you would normally fly north over Sweden then turn right and fly over Russia for about 9 hours, before turning south over China and down into Japan.

But Putin’s war on Ukraine changed all that with a no-fly zone over Russian airspace. Pre-flight, JAL had been indicating that they would simply be flying further north to avoid Russia. Turning a 12 hour flight into something closer to 16 hours.

However, once we were in the air, our flight plan headed south. Over Amsterdam, Budapest, Bucharest, Ankara, Baku, then over the Caspian Sea, south of the Aral Sea, north of Tashkent and Samarkand, onto Ulan Bator, Beijing, Dalian, Seoul, then Japan’s Oki Islands, Nagoya, Hamamatsu, and Tokyo.

It ended up being 15 hours 50 minutes.

I don't have such thoughts very often. Maybe it was the war affecting our flight playing heavily on my mind. Or maybe I just really needed a real break after two and a half years of a pandemic and not being in Japan.

A couple of films. A couple of naps.

It was now light outside. As we were sitting towards the rear of the plane I could see how much the wings were flexing in time with the cabin shaking from side to side. Then they closed the window blinds. Out of sight, it may have been, but not out of mind, that's for sure.

I downloaded the result, scrolled down, and saw this...

26th April 2022: Special visa approved!

After more than 2 years of being stuck outside the country, I've been granted a special visa to return with my wife to Japan. 

This is the longest period I've been away from Japan since I first arrived in 2000. I had to apply for a special visa through the Japanese Embassy in London.

There was a bunch of (typically old-school) Japanese bureaucracy paperwork to get through, which included 3 months of bank statements just to 'prove' I had enough money to support myself while in the country. 

The visa cost £22 - which had to be paid in cash, and the *exact* amount - no change given. ( Ah Japan, your quaint cash ways still charm us! ). 

Of course, this is NOT a tourist visa, since the Japanese government still isn't issuing those at present ( subscribe and be among the first to know when they do.)

What I was able to get is technically known as a temporary visitor visa as a spouse of a Japanese national. 

So, that’s it, finally my wife and I can return together and we’ll be in Japan for 1 month. We’re due to arrive early May.  

We’ll be spending most of our time in the Kansai and Chugoku regions of Honshu . 

Places already on the list include Osaka , Kyoto , Kobe , Hiroshima, Tottori, Himeji and a bunch of little-known smaller places along the way.

Keep in mind that for a comprehensive exploration of Japan, it is advisable to extend your stay to at least one month. Especially if you want to include some relaxing time during your trip and remote areas.

What is Japan’s Golden Route?

Japan’s Golden Route is a popular itinerary that allows travelers to experience the best of the country in 14 days. The route typically follows the Shinkansen (bullet train) line from Tokyo to the southern regions, encompassing a variety of iconic and historically significant destinations.

This well-established route ensures that you don’t miss out on the must-see attractions across the “Country of the Rising Sun.” From the bustling metropolis of Tokyo to the cultural treasure trove of Kyoto, and everything in between, the Golden Route promises a diverse and unforgettable journey through Japan.

Renting a car in Japan is generally not necessary, especially if you plan to follow the Golden Route or explore major cities. It can be expensive, and the road signs and driving customs in Japan may be unfamiliar to visitors, making it a less favorable option for most travelers. Therefore, relying on Japan’s excellent public transport system is highly recommended for a hassle-free and enjoyable trip.

Day 1 – 4: Tokyo

Tokyo, the legendary capital of Japan, has a population of 35 million, making it one of the most exciting megacities in the world. It is a city where the past meets the present and the present meets the future. On top of that, Tokyo is a city that never sleeps and that offers something for everyone.

When you spend 14 days in Japan, make sure to spend at least 4 days in the capital in order to explore Japanese culture. You can climb up to the tallest tower in the world, eat your way through Japanese cuisine, explore old temples, or dive into the anime and manga world. 

Best things to do in Tokyo

Tokyo is a city of multiple personalities so here are some of the best things to do in Tokyo that you will want to add to your itinerary.

Asakusa is a must-visit destination in Tokyo for its rich cultural and historical significance. Here you can find Sanso-Ji which is the oldest temple in Tokyo. Senso-Ji is famous also for Nakamise-Dori, which is one of the oldest market streets in Japan.

Despite the huge population, Tokyo boasts some of the largest parks in the world. Ueno Park is one of the most popular spots where locals and tourists find a relaxing oasis in the busy capital. The district of Ueno must be included in your 14 days in Japan to pay a visit to the Tokyo National Museum and the local market.

Obviously, this makes it one of the busiest restaurants in the capital, so you need to be a bit patient to enjoy your delicious meal. There is the main branch and other 2 locations in Tokyo.

If you are a meat lover, Han No Daidokoro is the right place to be. This typical Japanese restaurant has a wide selection of local high-quality meat. The ambiance is lovely and the service is professional. All this comes with a cost since it’s a bit expensive, but once you will try their dishes you will understand why.

Tonkatsu Maisen Aoyama is another legendary restaurant in Tokyo you can’t miss, especially if you are craving Tonkatsu. The meat is incredibly tender and the crumbs are delightfully crispy. Once again I recommend you get there early as this is another hot spot in Tokyo.

Ramen is another specialty you should try, so head to Nakiryu, which is one of the best ramen restaurants in Tokyo. The wait is totally worth it since the food is really outstanding. It is generously topped with a lot of high-quality ingredients including three different kinds of barbecued pork.

A trip to Japan comes with unique and fun experiences and ZAUO SHINJUKU is the perfect place to get a taste of it. Here you will see a pond with fish and you will have the chance to hook up your own fish and ask the cook to prepare it the way you like the most. This is a unique experience for an unforgettable meal.

Tour : Many tour companies offer day trips from Tokyo to Mount Fuji, including transportation and a guide. This can be a convenient option for those who want to see the mountain but do not want to navigate public transportation. This is one of the best-selling tours to Mt Fuji.

Taking the train is the most convenient and popular way to get from Tokyo to Mount Fuji. However, taking a tour may be the easiest way for those who do not want to navigate transportation on their own.

Best things to do in Mt Fuji

The town of Fujikawaguchiko is the perfect place to snap an iconic photo of Fujisan. Wake up early to take a photo with a reflection on the water, or frame the mountain with cherry blossoms or autumn colors.

Another iconic location that you find in every Japanese guide is the Pagoda Chureito. This spectacular pagoda offers a stunning view of Mount Fuji and it is the best of Japan in 14 days.

Hotou Fudou is the place to go to try the flavors of the region. Try a bowl of Hot noodles to warm up on a cold day. There is one near the Kawaguchiko station and one in Fujikawaguchiko.

のん兵 is an Izakaya restaurant offering simple and delicious food in a typical Japanese environment. It’s cheap, quick, and always a good idea.

Japanese cuisine Fumi of the village “Kokorogi” is a place where to experience a fine dining experience and find some fine spirit labels.

If you are dreaming to get back to the old Japanese spirit, don’t miss Sanrokuen. An unforgettable dining experience that will take you back in time with style.

For modern and delicious sushi, head to Shaw’s Sushi Bar & Dining. The lovely environment and the quality of the food justify a slightly higher price compared to other locations.

When choosing where to stay in the Mount Fuji area, consider your preferences, budget, and the attractions you plan to visit. It’s also worth noting that during peak seasons, such as cherry blossom or autumn foliage seasons, accommodations can fill up quickly, so it’s advisable to book in advance.

Fujikawaguchiko Onsen Konanso 

Are you looking for the best accommodation with a view of Mount Fuji? Don’t look any further! Fujikawaguchiko Onsen Konanso is a spectacular hotel built in Japanese style offering private Onsen with a jaw-dropping view of Mr. Fuji. It obviously comes with a price, but there is nothing better than Onsen Konanso to make your Golden Route Japan itinerary unforgettable .

Hotel New Century

If you are looking for a view of Mount Fuji at a more affordable price, this is your way to go! This hotel is modernly built in a traditional Japanese style and is conveniently located near the Kawaguchiko Train Station. The epic views of Mount Fuji are spectacular, especially from the Luxury suite.

How to get from Mt. Fuji to Kyoto?

To travel from Mount Fuji to Kyoto, you have several transportation options available. Here are a few common methods. Taking the train is the most convenient and popular way to get from Mount Fuji to Kyoto.

Train : Take the Fujikyu Railway Line from Mount Fuji Station to Mishima Station, then transfer to the JR Tokaido Shinkansen Line to Kyoto Station. This route takes around 3.5 to 4 hours and costs about 12,000 yen. Purchase 14 day JR pass here , however, keep in mind that it doesn’t cover Fujikyu Railway Line.

Where to eat in Kyoto

Kyoto is a city with countless restaurants, and it’s essential to choose wisely where to eat in order to get the best of your Japan itinerary.

For delicious ramen head to Honke Daiichi-Asahi located near the Kyoto station. This place has been serving ramen since 1947 and still going strong. If you want to twist your ramen, check Fire Ramen, where a cascade of fire will spice up your bowl.

For the freshest sushi, head to Nishiki Market. Here you can find Kimura Fresh Fish serving delicious sushi and sashimi in an informal environment, or 錦 鮨しん for something classy and unforgettable.

Kichi Kichi Omurice and 🦆🍜 are two restaurants serving Omurice and duck noodles which became popular thanks to Instagram. But they stayed popular thanks to the high quality of food and they will be delicious experiences.

For a fine dining experience head to Enen and try one of the best wagyu of your life! The fancy environment and the fantastic service will complete the experience.

Where to stay in Kyoto?

By now you know that I am a big fan of Mimaru Hotels as they are known for providing a unique blend of traditional and modern Japanese elements, offering guests a home-away-from-home experience.

MIMARU Kyoto Nijo Castle (Formerly Known as MIMARU Kyoto Horikawa Rokkaku)

This was my choice during my time in Kyoto. Conveniently located a few steps away from the castle and the Sanjo shopping arcade, MIMARU Kyoto Nijo Castle is a perfect place to sightseeing and see an authentic side of Kyoto.

Outside the hotel, you will also find several bus lines connecting to the main attractions in Kyoto, including the Golden Temple.

Guests can also relax on the terrace on the last floor of the hotel, maybe while sipping a Nespresso Coffee available in the reception.

MIMARU Kyoto Station

This is the most ideal location to explore other cities like Nara and Osaka, but also Kyoto itself, since there is a bus station just outside the hotel.

MIMARU Kyoto Station provides some unique accommodations like a room with a city view, where you can see the Shinkansen departing and arriving in the town. It also boasts a Pokemon room.

Due to the location and rooms, this is probably the best choice for a long stay in Kyoto. And it can accommodate up to 14 people in the Connecting Family apartment.

MIMARU Kyoto Shinmachi Sanjo

Conveniently located between the Nijo Castle and the Nishiki Market, this hotel lies in a very authentic yet comfortable area in Kyoto. This makes it perfect to have a relaxed stay in Kyoto, without giving up a strategic location.

Like the Mimaru station, MIMARU Kyoto Shinmachi Sanjo also boasts a unique Pokemon room. You can also find a connecting apartment of 80 m² that can accommodate up to 12 people.

MIMARU SUITES Kyoto Central

MIMARU SUITES Kyoto Central is located between Kyoto Castle and Nishiki Market, with easy access to all the Kyoto heritage. This makes it perfect for visitors who have 3 days in Kyoto or less.

The Three-Bedroom Japanese Suite is a wonderful example of Japanese design and style and can accommodate up to 6 people.

MIMARU Kyoto Nishinotoin Takatsuj

MIMARU Kyoto Nishinotoin Takatsuj stands between the Nijo Castle and the Kyoto Station, in a lively area full of restaurants and bars. Despite not being in the heart of the city, the Kyoto Heritage is easily accessible. All the main attractions in the city are well connected to the hotel.

Day trip to Nara and Uji

When you spend 2 weeks in Japan, you want to add a day trip from Kyoto to Nara and Uji. You can either visit both of these towns on separate day trips or combine them together, which is a great option if you are on the clock and don’t have a lot of time to explore the surroundings of Kyoto.

Nara is known for its friendly and freely roaming deer as well as its historical significance as the first capital of Japan. It has well-connected public transport, which makes it one of the best day trips from Kyoto.

Spend the day exploring Nara Park, where you can encounter the friendly deer that roam freely. Visit iconic attractions like Todai-ji Temple, home to the Great Buddha, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine with its beautiful lanterns.

While Uji is a beautiful city located just south of Kyoto, known for its rich history of tea cultivation and its association with matcha.

Take a day trip from Kyoto to Uji, which is easily accessible by train from Kyoto Station. Upon arriving in Uji, make your way to Byodo-In Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its stunning architecture and serene surroundings. Explore the temple grounds and learn about its historical significance.

After visiting Byodo-In Temple, take the opportunity to experience Uji’s tea culture. Visit traditional tea houses and sample locally produced matcha, which is known for its high quality. You can also participate in a tea ceremony to gain a deeper understanding of the art of tea preparation.

Day 11 – 13: Osaka (half-day trip Himeji)

Osaka is known as the “Nation’s Kitchen” due to its vibrant food culture and delicious cuisine. However, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy in the city beyond eating. At the top of the list is Osaka Castle, which is one of the most famous landmarks in Japan and a must-visit attraction in Osaka.

Dotonbori and Shinsekai are not just food havens but also vibrant areas for shopping and entertainment. Visiting Osaka means also taking a glimpse at modern Japan, and appreciating the modern architecture of Umeda Skybuilldng. This is also the best place to catch a sunset over the city.

Osaka keeps also an intimate historical side after the castle that sometimes tourist miss. Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine and Nakazakichō area are perfect examples to find historical Japanese architecture.

And a day trip to Himeji is a popular highlight when visiting Osaka. Himeji is a city located in Hyogo Prefecture, just a short distance away from Osaka. The main attraction in Himeji is Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan’s most beautiful and well-preserved castles.

How to get from Kyoto to Osaka?

Getting from Kyoto to Osaka is convenient and straightforward. There are several transportation options available.

Train : Take the JR Tokaido-Sanyo Line from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station. This route takes around 30 minutes and costs around 560 yen. Shinkansen is also a solution and it takes only 14 minutes. Purchase 14 day JR pass here.

Subway : Take the Karasuma Line from Kyoto Station to Shijo Station, then transfer to the Hankyu Kyoto Line to Umeda Station in Osaka. This route takes around 45 minutes and costs around 410 yen.

Bus : Several bus companies operate daily services from Kyoto to Osaka. The journey takes around 1 hour and costs around 2,000 yen. You can purchase tickets here.

Taxi : You can take a taxi from Kyoto to Osaka, but it can be quite expensive, costing around 30,000 yen. If you want to book your transfer in advance, you can do it here.

Taking the train or subway is the most convenient and popular way to get from Kyoto to Osaka. Buses can be a good alternative if you want to save money, while taxis are best reserved for those who prefer a more comfortable and direct mode of transportation.

Best things to do in Osaka

 The Castle of Osaka (Osaka Castle) holds great significance as a symbol of the city and is one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks. Visitors to Osaka Castle can explore the picturesque gardens and the castle’s main keep, which houses a museum.

Eat until you are broke! Osaka is the nation’s kitchen and you would need a lifetime to try all the restaurants and food stalls in the city. But still, food hopping is one of the best things to do in Japan in 14 days and there is no better place than Osaka for this.

And there is no better place than Umeda Sky Building to catch a sunset over Osaka. Here you can take your postcards of Osaka in one of the most iconic skyscrapers of the city.

If you are passionate about Japanese pop culture, you will love Shinsekai! This vibrant district is home to the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower, one of the most photographed landmarks in Japan. The neon signs and the thousands of restaurants and shops will make you have one of the best times during your 2 weeks in Japan.

A few minutes away from Shinsekai, find Dotombori, another iconic location in Japan. Yes, Dotonbori can be a bit overwhelming considering the number of people in the district, but it’s one of the most colorful and lively districts in Japan. Here you will find plenty of shops and boutiques to satisfy your need for shopping and even more iconic restaurants and food stalls.

Taking a food tour in Osaka is a fantastic way to fully immerse yourself in the culinary delights the city has to offer. A food tour will allow you to sample a variety of local dishes, explore hidden gems, and learn about the history and culture behind Osaka’s food scene.

Where to eat in Osaka

While it’s impossible to cover all the great places to eat in Osaka, here are some popular and highly recommended dining spots that can make your 14 days in Japan delicious.

Sushi Hayata is the ultimate experience to try some unforgettable sushi while visiting Japan. Delicious fish, beautiful and traditional environment, great hospitality, and awesome presentation. Don’t miss it.

Katsudon Chiyomatsu is a place that became popular through social media and they are specialized in Tonkatsu. I am not a big fan of pork meat but I have to admit that the Tonkatsu was ridiculously tasty. It was hands down the best pork meat of my life.

Rikuro’s Namba Main Branch is home to the most famous cheesecake in Japan. The giggly cheesecake is a real must-try when you visit Osaka.

Set in the folkloristic Shinsekai, Okonomiyaki Usagiya is your way to go to try some delicious okonomiyaki. The place is exquisitely Japanese and the prices are very affordable. Alternatively, you can try Okonomiyaki Chitose.

Where to stay in Osaka?

Osaka is another destination where you can find Mimaru hotels located in the most strategic locations. So here is a quick summary of the best hotels in Osaka.

MIMARU OSAKA SHINSAIBASHI WEST

This was my choice during my time in Osaka. MIMARU OSAKA SHINSAIBASHI WEST is perfect to experience the authentic side of Osaka as the hotel is located on a quiet street full of restaurants. The shopping streets are just 5 minutes away.

MIMARU OSAKA NAMBA North

MIMARU OSAKA NAMBA North is set 70 m from Orange Street and 500 m from Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade.  It’s a great choice for those who want to experience the liveliest side of Osaka for shopping and food. Dotonbori is just a few steps away.

This hotel also boasts a unique and popular Pokemon room. If you are a fan this is simply a must for you.

MIMARU Osaka Shinsaibashi North

MIMARU Osaka Shinsaibashi North is located 500 m from TKP Shinsaibashi Ekimae Conference Center and 600 m from Shinsaibashi Station. This is the Mimaru Hotel which is the closest to Osaka Castle.

What makes this hotel very special are the themed apartments like Ninja Room, so it is a great choice if you are looking for unique experiences in Osaka.

MIMARU OSAKA SHINSAIBASHI EAST

MIMARU OSAKA SHINSAIBASHI EAST is located 5 minutes away from MIMARU Osaka Shinsaibashi North, closer to the Dotonbori area.

If you are passionate about Japanese drinks like sake this is your place to go. The staff will take good care of you to make you experience a taste of Japan.

MIMARU Osaka Namba Station

MIMARU Osaka Namba Station stands a few steps away from the infamous Kuromon Street Market and the train station. This is a perfect spot if you are planning to explore the surrounding of Osaka and the city. Many attractions are within walking distance.

The hotel boasts some unique accommodations like Board Game Rooms. Some are perfect for families, others for groups of friends.

Half-day trip to Himeji

Himeji is located within close proximity to Osaka, making it an easily achievable day trip. It is famous for its picturesque castle, which will be one of the highlights of your 14-day Japan itinerary.

Be sure to check the train schedules for your return trip and allow for some flexibility in your plans. A day trip to Himeji from Osaka allows you to explore the beautiful castle and experience the historical charm of this city, making for a memorable day of sightseeing.

Day 13 – 14: Hiroshima 

Despite the tragedy that hit the city in WW2, Hiroshima is one of the most lively cities in Japan. If your 14 days in Japan itinerary allows you to spend an extra night here, I highly recommend you give Hiroshima and Miyajima Island a chance. 

Traveling from Osaka to Hiroshima on a day trip is a popular option due to the efficient transportation system in Japan. The Shinkansen is a convenient and fast way to reach Hiroshima from Osaka. However, spending a night is certainly a better option.

How to get from Osaka to Hiroshima?

To travel from Osaka to Hiroshima, you have several transportation options available. Here are the most common methods.

Train: The Shinkansen is the fastest and most convenient way to travel between Hiroshima and Osaka. Take the Sanyo Shinkansen line from Shin-Osaka Station to Hiroshima. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the type of train you choose. Purchase 14 day JR pass here.

Local Trains: If you prefer a more budget-friendly option, you can take local trains. From Osaka, take the JR Sanyo Line to Hiroshima. The journey can take around 3 to 4 hours, depending on the train and transfers. This option is suitable if you have more time and want to enjoy the scenic route.

Choose the option that best suits your preferences in terms of budget, time, and comfort. The Shinkansen is generally the most recommended option due to its speed and convenience.

Best things to do in Hiroshima

Visit the island of Miyajima, which is a small island famous for its iconic red tori in the water which is ranked as one of Japan’s three best views. Miyajima Island is also a peaceful and romantic place where the surrounding nature is absolutely stunning. Here you can also find hiking trails and temples such as Itsukushima.

There are thousands of shopping streets that are way less touristy than Kyoto or Tokyo and full of boutiques, cafes, and traditional restaurants, so it could be a great plan for some last-minute shopping before your departure.

Despite the tragic history, Hiroshima is a city where you can learn how to appreciate peace more than anywhere else in the world. Visit some iconic places like the Arch of Peace, the Museum of Peace, and the Atomic Bomb Dome. Pay your respect at Children’s Peace Monument and learn the heartbreaking story of Sadako Sasaki.

Hiroshima boasts a castle located on the water. This castle was reconstructed s the original one was destroyed but it’s rebuilt in the exact same style as the original.

Just like other cities in Japan, Hiroshima takes pride in some local food specialties. Onomichi ramen is probably the most famous, but don’t miss the famous Hiroshima Oysters to make Japan’s itinerary special. Some other foods you don’t want to miss are the sweets Momiji Manju and the Okonomiyaki in the Hiroshima way.

Cars lovers can’t miss the Mazda Museum. Mazda was established in Hiroshima in 1920 and it has played a key role in the economy of the city. If you want to visit the museum don’t forget to make your reservation online!

When choosing a place to stay in Hiroshima, you have several options depending on your preferences and budget. Whether you’re looking for luxury accommodation or a more budget-friendly option, Hiroshima has a range of choices to suit different needs and preferences.

This is the perfect choice to stay in a wonderful modern hotel without killing your budget. The hotel is located in a central position and offers all the comfort you might need in a stylish environment. Some apartments can accommodate up to 6 people.

Smile Hotel Hiroshima

If you are looking for affordable accommodation in Hiroshima this is the way to go. It boasts an excellent score on booking and it offers basic but clean and comfortable accommodations. You won’t find anything better for the price.

Day 14: Departure

Depending on your flight, you can either go from Hiroshima to Osaka or all the way back to Tokyo. Make sure you check the flight time and plan it accordingly to catch your flight back home.

How to get from Hiroshima to Tokyo/Osaka?

The fastest and most convenient way to travel between Hiroshima and Tokyo is by taking the Shinkansen. The Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen line connects the two cities. Night buses and planes are also available but I don’t recommend these options.

To travel from Hiroshima to Osaka, you have a Shinkansen and a Local Train, so just follow the same steps as you arrived in Hiroshima.
