Opera North 2022 Review: Parsifal

Brindley Sherratt’s Breathtaking Gurnemanz Shines in Semi-Staged Production

(Photo: Mark Allan)

Last time Opera North visited London’s Southbank Centre it was for an award-winning semi-staged Ring cycle, conducted by then music director Richard Farnes. They even made a gripping and hugely instructive recording for YouTube that shows the entire tetralogy from a camera placed right in front of the conductor. He returns to the Royal Festival Hall with the orchestra of Opera North for another Wagner – “Parsifal,” the ambivalent and mysterious “festival play for the consecration of the stage” that dazzles and perplexes with its heady brew of blood, sex, magic and redemption.

When this production opened at the Leeds Grand – the symbolic home of Opera North, who tour widely – it was in a substantial concert staging, with lighting, projections, costumes, props, and more involved movement. Sam Brown’s production has grown leaner on its journey down to London via Manchester and Newcastle and in this stripped-back presentation offers an illuminated grail in the choir behind the orchestra, and a row of blood-red chairs at the front of the stage, which diminish from six in Act one to two by the very end, as if to reflect the scattering of the knights and the diminishing of the Grail kingdom.

Even though it looked un-promisingly like stand and deliver, this was far from the case. The traces of the director’s hand remain in careful use of stands and sits, well-timed turns, expression, and movement. A couple of moments fall flat without the armature of the theatre – this is an opera about spectacle and illusion after all – notably the mimed spear-throwing at the end of Act two, which was crying for a prop, or some kind of signal in the lighting.

Luminous Musical Clarity

But what directors are able to skirt in terms of creating a coherent theatrical concept for this most baffling of Wagner’s works they gain luminous musical clarity, and here Brown is aided by an impressive cast.

Brindley Sherratt’s background is as a well-oiled singer of the Italian bel canto repertoire, but lately he has made a compelling sojourn into Wagner, first as a belt-and-braces Fafner in ”Das Rheingold” in the Festival Hall with Vladimir Jurowski pre-pandemic, and latterly as an inky, malevolent Hunding in Richard Jones recent “Valkyrie” at ENO. (A recent cameo as King Mark in last year’s “Tristan” at Glyndebourne was also noteworthy).

As Gurnemanz, he cements his reputation in this area of the repertoire. Wagner famously wanted his singers to deliver the music as if it were Bellini – legato, melodious, and certainly never parked nor barked. Sherratt delivered a masterclass in Wagner singing, both technically and dramatically. With a remarkable economy of gesture he renders Gurnemanz’s great narrations utterly gripping, with a remarkable precision in terms of intonation, attack, and consistency of sound, with vowels that are paragons of clarity and resonating potential. The strength in the voice comes from the purity and finesse of the diction, remarkably sustained over Act one’s span.

There was character in spades too: a careworn guilty quality in his shifty responses to the knights’ enquiries; tenderness in handling Kundry in Act three. A standout moment of real vocal daring and artistry came in Act one: “durch Mitleid wissend, / der reine Tor” was sung as a feathery whisper, at miraculously intimate volume, in a peerless moment of vocal artistry. Sherratt would sing the most sensational Hans Sachs, and let us hope he is engaged to do so soon – perhaps even by Opera North.

Derek Welton’s Klingsor proved another vocal highlight. His steely baritone made light work of Wagner’s dramatic Act two orchestration. His voice has a commanding – one might even say enchanting – fullness and heft that established his status and authority in this relatively spare staging, not least during a thrilling summoning of Kundry at the top of Act two. His physical presence and movement was more extravagant than that of other characters in this semi-staging, perhaps veering into silliness at times – arms raised aloft with Jedi-like Force powers – but Welton played his part with just enough wryness that it came off. One senses a costume might’ve helped tonally.

Mixed But Solid Results

Toby Spence sang the title role. He is a not a heldentenor , which cleared the ground for a less butch, swaggering vocal portayal, in considerable contrast to, say, the glinting brightness of a Simon O’Neill or burnished darkness of Jonas Kaufmann in the role. Spence is limpid and softer-hued in the role, which at times – not least on hearing of his mother’s death – created moments of real melancholy that felt understated and inward rather than breast-beating.

On the other hand, it is a smaller voice and with an uncovered orchestra there was just not enough of it at times – his confrontation with Klingsor at the climax of Act two was a little damp, though the earlier climaxes had sufficient power and gravitas to really land – not least his great cry of “Erlöser!” His slighter voice meant that top notes were pushed and occasionally squeezed, distorting the vowels and losing the wonderful qualities he showed off in more intimate moments. By Act three he began to tire and his final monologue felt a little embattled, though he sang tastefully throughout.

His costume – a flash of white shirt in an otherwise black and suited staging – probably didn’t help with the impact, as its particular length and cut made him look rather like a waiter. Some Wein und Brot for the table, sir?

Katarina Karnéus sang Kundry. She was brighter and steelier than other accounts of the role, which turn up the volume on its sensuality and voluptuousness. Her voice brings more blade and edge to the role, which adds to the fraught emotional atmosphere, a toxic mix of shame and despair. She had all the top notes that one might want, and never wavered during the treacherous and taxing passengers that grow in volume and virtuosity – fearlessly leaping across Wagner’s vertiginous changes in registration. As with Farnes’ conducting – more on that later – detail and accuracy were key, singing a thrillingly anguished “und lachte…” in Act two.

Robert Hayward’s vibrato may veer a little wide, and the knock-on effect it sometimes has on intonation can clouded some of the higher-lying passages as Amfortas. Nonetheless in his Act one sequence Hayward impressed with a soft-grained and slightly gravelly tenderness and delicacy in his narration; at the other end of the spectrum, the singing in the climactic monologue in Act three was powerful and exacting, with top notes given their full due.

Stephen Richardson’s Titurel sang from the very rear of the choir stalls, achieving most of the effect we’re accustomed to in productions of the piece, and had a similarly careworn – though more monumental – quality to Hayward.

A lustrous group of Flower Maidens completed the lineup – Miranda Bevin, Samantha Clarke, Helen Évora, Elin Pritchard, Victoria Sharp, and Kathryn Stevens . Vocally they took an incisive approach, with harder edges and plenty of articulation – less shrinking violet and more Venus flytrap, ready to ensnare poor Toby Spence.

Their semi-chorus was supported by superb work from the Opera North chorus proper, prepared by Oliver Rundell. A few ensemble problems from the women placed at considerable apart in the choir stalls for Act two, they offered explosive support for the soloists out front, including a brilliantly acidic “Tor!”

The tenors and basses shone in Act three, with a murky, beautifully-covered sound in a glowering “Geleiten wir im bergenden Schrein.” The tenors in particular maintained a baritonal burnish throughout the increasingly agitated sequence, as they urge Amfortas to unveil the Grail. The final minutes – “Erlösung dem Erlöser!” – were impressively burnished and luminous the Festival Hall’s dry acoustic.

Stars of the Night

The stars, perhaps, are the Opera North orchestra under Farnes’ direction. His approach to tempi and pacing are what stood out most: a sense of pace and internal movement – he beat the opening in eight rather than four, animating its syncopations and dotted rhythms – but never pressing or rushing, allowing the score’s miraculous luminosity to grow and bloom. No risk of the glacial accounts of Karajan or Reginald Goodall, but plenty of attention to detail too.

A special shoutout should go to Opera North concertmaster David Greed who gave his final performance with the orchestra that night, after 44 years of service – he was greeted with a huge ovation at the final tuning before the beginning of Act three, an apt summary of an illustrious career with the orchestra, and summed up in his exquisitely sinuous violin solos in Act two.

The final minute of Act two saw a remarkable excavation of Wagner’s orchestration, showing us just how rich it is, framed by startling interjections from timpani, with what felt like harder sticks than in traditional accounts. Playing throughout was pungent and heady, with ferocious attack from the strings, who gleamed throughout, and brass playing that was fulsome and rich though never brash and blaring.

Farnes is one tipped to succeed Antonio Pappano at the Royal Opera House – on the strength of this performance we may well expect to see more of him in London.

Opera North Reveals New Season For 2022-23

Opera North Reveals New Season For 2022-23

Opera North has announced details of its 2022-23 season. The eight productions include a new co-production of Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos (1912), revivals of Puccini ’s Tosca (1900) and Verdi’s La traviata ( The Fallen Woman , 1853), a concert staging of The Pearl Fishers (Bizet, 1863), and two exciting collaborations with partners in the company’s home city of Leeds.

The season opens in September with a revival of director Alessandro Talevi’s popular version of La traviata , set in Belle Époque Paris.

Violetta is a courtesan who is enjoying the Parisian high life when, to her surprise, she falls in love with the handsome Alfredo Germont. But she cannot escape the consequences of her past life, and circumstances conspire to force her to sacrifice what may be her only chance of true love.

Two casts feature across the tour. With Russian soprano Anna Denisova and a singer to be confirmed sharing the role of Violetta, Maltese tenor Nico Darmanin and British tenor Oliver Johnston as Alfredo and English baritone Stephen Gadd and Italian baritone Damiano Salerno as his father Giorgio Germont.

Orpheus: Monteverdi reimagined is an innovative collaboration with longstanding Opera North partner South Asian Arts-uk (SAA-uk), a Leeds-based centre of excellence in Indian classical music.

This reimagining of Monteverdi’s pioneering 1607 work, often credited as the first great opera, is the culmination of a long period of research and development, during which musicians and consultants from both organisations explored ideas and connections between Western and Indian classical music.

The intimate scale, partially improvised and collaborative nature of early Baroque opera, featuring continuo accompaniment, and arias where soloists are able to add ornamentation, offers creative parallels with the structured improvisation of the Indian classical tradition.

The story begins with the wedding of Orpheus – a musician of mythical power – to Eurydice. But the celebrations are cut short by Eurydice’s sudden death. The grief is too great for Orpheus to bear, and he resolves to do anything he can to return his beloved to life.

This new production relocates the mythic fields of Thrace to a British garden. It is directed by young British Asian director and dramaturg Anna Himali Howard, with sets and costumes by Leslie Travers.

The creative team includes artistic consultant Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, previously artistic director of SAA-uk and founder of Leeds Centre For Indian Music and Dance. Musical direction is by early music specialist Laurence Cummings and composer and sitar player Jasdeep Singh Degun. English tenor Nicholas Watts sings the title role.

Keranjeet Kaur Virdee, artistic director and CEO of SAA-uk, commented: “2022 is a year of celebration for South Asian Arts-uk as we mark and celebrate 25 years of work, and pave the way to Leeds 2023 and beyond.

“This unique collaboration is the end result of a longstanding relationship and many conversations through which Opera North and SAA-uk have developed trust and the confidence to be bold and innovative. This creative approach has developed into a musical and cultural exchange, pushing the boundaries and challenging perceptions while exploring universal narratives.

“It is exciting to be a part of this evolution and see a new work that is reflective of people like me who have made the UK their home.”

British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote returns to Opera North in October in a concert version of another retelling of the Orpheus myth, Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice  (1762).

Originally performed for film and radio broadcast during lockdown in 2021, Opera North will now tour this to venues across the north of England, with Coote as Orfeo, Welsh soprano Fflur Wyn as Euridice and British soprano Daisy Brown as Amor. The Orchestra of Opera North comes under the baton of principal guest conductor Antony Hermus.

Heading into 2023, January sees Edward Dick reviving his production of Tosca . Irish soprano Giselle Allen will reprise her role as the eponymous superstar opera singer, with English bass-baritone Robert Hayward as Baron Scarpia, the corrupt chief of police who is obsessed with her.

In February, Opera North’s music director Garry Walker takes up the baton for a revival of David Pountney’s classic staging of Janáček’s juxtaposition of the natural and human worlds, The Cunning Little Vixen (1924).

A Forester captures a young Vixen and takes her home as a pet for his children. But she escapes back into the wild, where she meets a Fox. Welsh soprano Elin Pritchard returns to Opera North as Vixen Sharp-Ears, with British mezzo-soprano Heather Lowe as Fox.

The same month also sees Opera North’s first ever presentation of Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos , in a co-production with Gothenburg Opera. Comedy and tragedy collide when a wealthy patron commissions two entertainments for his guests – one a knockabout comedy, the other a high-flown mythological opera.

London-based Greek director Rodula Gaitanou and set and costume designer George Souglides set the Prologue within a bustling film studio, where two very different operatic films are combined to cut costs.

Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers will be presented as a concert staging in May. Telling the story of two men, Nadir and Zurga, whose vow of friendship is tested by their love for the same woman, the priestess Léïla, the opera is set in an exoticised pre-colonial Sri Lanka, presenting challenges for contemporary opera companies.

Through this new staging along with a related series of events, Opera North will explore some of the issues involved in presenting this 19th-century work today.

The final production of the season is a new contemporary dance staging of one of the most famous of all choral works, Mozart’s Requiem mass – left unfinished at his death at just 36 years old.

In this unique collaboration with Phoenix Dance Theatre, Dane Hurst directs and choreographs a new version of the Requiem alongside a new work created with guest artists from South Africa. In this cross-cultural production, Phoenix and performing artists from South Africa will join forces with the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North conducted by Garry Walker.

All productions open at Leeds Grand Theatre before touring to venues across the north of England. Tickets are on sale now; for full date, location and pricing information, see Opera North’s website .

A revival of director Alessandro Talevi’s popular version of Verdi’s La traviata opens Opera North’s 2022-23 season in September 2022 (Richard H Smith).

opera north tour 2022

Opera North has announced a year of cultural encounters and myths retold, in eight productions for its 2022–23 season.

The season begins in September 2022 with a revival of Alessandro Talevi’s Belle Époque production of La traviata , featuring two young international casts across its tour. Music Director Garry Walker takes up the baton for David Pountney’s classic staging of Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen . Elin Pritchard returns to Opera North as Vixen Sharp-Ears, with Heather Lowe as Fox.

Opening in May 2023, Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers will be the latest in Opera North’s concert stagings, conducted by Matthew Kofi Waldren and directed by Matthew Eberhardt.

The final new production of the season is a contemporary dance staging of Mozart’s Requiem in collaboration with Phoenix Dance Theatre. Music Director Garry Walker conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North in Mozart’s final work, in a production choreographed by Dane Hurst which will draw on South African influences.

Opera North Brings Opera To Venues Across The North This Winter

The season opens at Leeds Grand Theatre on Saturday 21 January with Edward Dick's thrilling production of Puccini's Tosca.

Exploring themes of love, loss and laughter, Opera North Announces Its Winter Productions

With Puccini's devastating take on passion and power, Janáček's bittersweet exploration of the cycle of life, and Strauss' playful look at what happens when tragedy and comedy collide on and off stage, Opera North's new season brings memorable characters, compelling drama and incredible music to theatres across the north of England this winter. Alongside the mainstage shows, there will also be over 40 opportunities for young people and their families to engage with opera in theatres, libraries, schools, community arts centres and universities throughout the region.

The season opens at Leeds Grand Theatre on Saturday 21 January with Edward Dick's thrilling production of Puccini's Tosca, one of the world's most enduringly popular operas. The singer Tosca is the lover of Cavaradossi, an artist, but has also attracted the attention of Scarpia, the corrupt Chief of Police, who wants her for himself. The opportunity presents itself when Cavaradossi is arrested and tortured for helping an escaped political prisoner. Scarpia offers Tosca a stark choice: if she gives herself to him, he will let Cavaradossi go free.

Robert Hayward returns to Opera North to sing Scarpia with Giselle Allen sharing the role of Tosca with Magdalena Molendowska. Ukrainian tenor Mykhailo Malafii makes his Opera North debut as Cavaradossi with Uruguayan tenor Andrés Presno singing the role in Nottingham and Newcastle. Opera North Music Director, Garry Walker, conducts Puccini's mesmerising score which includes Tosca's moving paean to art 'Vissi d'arte', Caravadossi's heart-wrenching farewell 'E lucevan le stelle', and the powerful hymn 'Te deum'.

A very different look at life and loss follows with Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen. Inspired by a comic strip in his local paper, Janáček brought his unique vision to this captivating tale of a mischievous young vixen Sharp-Ears who, having been captured by a Forester to become his family's pet, eventually manages to escape back into the wild only to be shot while defending her cubs. By turns funny and profound, the opera features a host of colourful characters including hens, a dragonfly and a badger, and a playful score brimming with folk-infused melodies.

Originally a Scottish Opera/ Welsh National Opera co-production, Sir David Pountney's interpretation of Janáček's work is widely regarded as a classic. Andrew Gourlay conducts a cast which sees a host of singers making a welcome return to the Opera North stage including Elin Pritchard (Nedda, Pagliacci, 2017) who sings Vixen Sharp-Ears, Heather Lowe (Cherubino, The Marriage of Figaro, 2020) as Fox, Callum Thorpe (Sparafucile, Rigoletto, 2022) as the Poacher and Paul Nilon (Yannakos, The Greek Passion, 2019) as the Schoolmaster. James Rutherford shares the role of the Forester with Richard Burkhard (Lhotský, Osud/ Tonio, Pagliacci, 2017)

The Cunning Little Vixen will be offered as a schools' matinee both in Leeds and on tour to give upper KS2 and KS3 pupils the chance to experience live opera in the theatre, many for the first time. A learning pack linked to various subjects in the curriculum will provide information and resources for teachers to use in the classroom before their visit, and schools will have the option to attend an online interactive music and drama workshop early in the year to explore the score, plot and characters with a vocal animateur and drama practitioner from the company's Education team.

Taking Janáček's opera as its inspiration, a family-friendly show Little Listeners: Mini Vixen has also been created to give all ages a chance to experience live music and storytelling in relaxed and welcoming settings. A cast of professional opera singers and musicians will take the audience on a fun-filled adventure in the forest as a vixen and fox discover that working together achieves far more than going it alone. The show will tour throughout the North with performances already planned in Alnwick, Cumbria, Dewsbury, Doncaster, Halifax, Hull, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Salford Quays, Wakefield and York.

Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, a first for Opera North, completes the winter season in a co-production with Gothenburg Opera, where it premiered to critical acclaim in 2018. London-based Greek director Rodula Gaitanou and designer George Souglides have set the action in a bustling 1950s Fellini-esque Italian film studio. Much to everyone's dismay, two different shows - a light musical comedy and a serious mythological opera - have been asked to merge at the last minute to cut costs. The worlds collide to hilarious effect when the commedia dell'arte's fickle Zerbinetta tries to cheer up Ariadne/ Prima Donna, who longs only for death having been jilted by Theseus.

Underpinned by a score which is at once heroic and romantic, the ensuing drama both on and off stage offers a meditation on differing attitudes to life and love and casts a quizzical eye over the concepts of 'high' and 'low' art. Opera North's Principal Guest Conductor, Antony Hermus, returns to conduct a cast including, in their Company debuts, English soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn as Ariadne/ Prima Donna and Polish mezzo soprano Hanna Hipp as the Composer. They are joined by Jennifer France as Zerbinetta and Erin Caves as Bacchus/ Tenor.

Following the run in Leeds, all three productions will tour to venues across the north of England, including The Lowry at Salford Quays, Nottingham Theatre Royal and Newcastle Theatre Royal, with performances of Tosca and The Cunning Little Vixen also planned at Hull New Theatre. Free tickets are available for 16 to 20-year-olds at all performances in Leeds, while Under 30s can take advantage of the schemes running in every venue to watch a performance for just £10. Through the Try it ON scheme, newcomers to opera can also enjoy some of the best seats in the house with two tickets for £20 each at Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham.

2023-24 Season Guide      2023-24 Performance Diary

Autumn 2023: The Green Season

Underlining its commitment to sustainability , Autumn sees Opera North performing its first full sustainable season in an ambitious and progressive programme guided by the Theatre Green Book . All three operas will share scenic elements to create interlinked yet distinctive designs, enabling Opera North to reduce its use of materials, and all sets, props and costumes will be sourced from previous productions or purchased second-hand. More matinee performances have also been introduced in order to make it easier for audiences to travel on public transport.

Opening the season in September will be a new production of Verdi’s Falstaff , directed by Olivia Fuchs and conducted by Music Director Garry Walker  with Henry Waddington in the title role.

The world premiere of a new piece created by Sir David Pountney follows. Masque of Might recycles music by one of the greatest English theatre composers, Henry Purcell, and reimagines the 17th-century form of the masque to create a biting yet humorous contemporary satire, billed as an ‘eco-entertainment’. Baroque specialist Harry Bicket conduct this witty, incisive and fantastical work, which addresses urgently topical themes such as the abuses of a powerful political leader and the gathering climate crisis.

The season completes with Puccini’s La rondine , directed by James Hurley and conducted by Kerem Hasan, with a cast including Galina Averina as Magda, Claire Lees as Lisette, Sébastien Guèze as Ruggero and Elgan Llŷr Thomas as Prunier.

Winter 2024

A revival of Giles Havergal ’s production of Britten’s comedy Albert Herring , opens the winter season with performances taking place in the intimate space of the Howard Assembly Room, Leeds. Dame Josephine Barstow returns to the role of Lady Billows while Music Director Garry Walker conducts.

Tim Albery’s classic production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte features a new cast including Alexandra Lowe as Fiordiligi and Heather Lowe as Dorabella, with Anthony Gregory and Henry Neill as their duplicitous lovers Ferrando and Guglielmo. Performances will be conducted by Clemens Schuldt and Chloe Rooke , each making their Opera North debuts.

Completing the Winter season, a double-bill of short operas pairs a revival of Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana with a new production of Rachmaninov’s rarely performed Aleko . Karolina Sofulak directs both halves of the double-bill, which will be conducted by Principal Guest Conductor Antony Hermus .

Many of the cast take roles in both works, including Robert Hayward , who sings Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana and the title role in Aleko, and  Anne-Marie Owens who sings Lucia in Cavalleria rusticana and Baboushka in Aleko .

Engaging with more than 100 community groups across Leeds and West Yorkshire to open up our work to people who may have barriers that prevent them from participating in the arts, Community Partnerships has welcomed six new Encore Plus partners for 2023. Two of these partnerships reflect our position as the only opera company in the UK to have been awarded Theatre of Sanctuary status for our work with refugees and sanctuary seekers: Leeds Refugee Forum which helps refugees and asylum seekers in the city to rebuild their lives, and Solace which provides mental health and wellbeing support for people with experience of exile and persecution. Since it began in 2013, the Encore community scheme has welcomed more than 14,000 attendees to our performances.

Richard Mantle, General Director, Opera North:

“Opera North is a company which constantly innovates and evolves in response to a changing world. No challenge is more urgent for us all than the climate crisis, and we are committed to the positive change that we – along with all our colleagues in the music and theatre sectors – must make in order to reduce our environmental impact and run our operation more sustainably.

“Our creative teams for the Green Season have embraced these challenges with imagination and invention, and I am confident that the resulting productions will bear all the hallmarks of excellence and innovation audiences expect from Opera North.”

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

opera north tour 2022

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.
