Launch Experience

Launch the Virtual Tour Experience above to see what our campus is like!

A plaque on the Forest Grove Campus still marks the log cabin of the original home of the Tualatin Academy, a school for orphans and precursor to Pacific University. Old College Hall, the oldest academic building still in use west of the Mississippi, also sits on the corner of campus, serving as the university museum.

Today, Pacific University’s Forest Grove Campus is a mix of historic brick buildings, giant oaks and evergreens, and state-of-the-art student facilities.

The Forest Grove Campus is Pacific’s primary residential campus, serving most of our undergraduate students. In addition to more than  65+ undergraduate areas of study , we also offer  master and doctorate level programs  in education, optometry and business in Forest Grove.

On the west edge of the Portland Metro Area, Forest Grove offers perfect proximity to the city and the great outdoors. You’re a short drive or public transit ride from downtown Portland, or just an hour away from the Oregon Coast or Cascade Mountains. Surfing or skiing, kayaking or canoeing, biking, hiking and rock climbing are all  outdoor adventures  available just out our backdoor.

Uo 360: a trip to campus, from anywhere.

A trek into virtual reality enables new Ducks to visit the UO without ever leaving home

In the coming weeks, students will ride a motorcycle onto the field at Autzen Stadium.

They will fly over the UO campus without going through TSA first.

And they’ll do it all from miles away.

Admitted fall UO students should have received their own one-of-a-kind goggles. All they need to is assemble the Ducks-eye View goggles and download the app a 360.uoregon.edu , to begin the adventure.

With nearly 100 different virtual reality experiences, students can view nearly any place on the UO campus with a full 360-degree visual experience. Get a duck’s-eye view of one of the most beautiful universities in the country, explore research labs, take a peek into campus life, and have an all-access pass to athletic events.

The opportunity is theirs to choose.

The project was developed in partnership with Student Services and Enrollment Management and University Communications with one goal; give new students a unique opportunity to experience campus from anywhere in the world. It’s created to be completely immersive with exhilarating visuals and impeccable audio, bringing students directly on campus by donning a little headgear.

For Student Service and Enrollment Management Vice President Roger Thompson, giving potential students a UO experience is a benefit all the way around. “I am absolutely thrilled with the work the team has done on this project—now every student and their family can experience our campus from home,” he said. “We also hope after experiencing UO360, students and families will connect with us or join us for a virtual event!” he said.

More than 150 people were involved with this project. The one-of-a-kind goggles were designed by UO design professionals and their student staff.

Former student employee Hannah Lewman wrote nearly all of the content that leads students on an adventure and helps them choose which options they want to explore first. Flight Crew students also text and interact with students about any questions they may have about becoming a Duck. They will also serve to guide students though the options that UO360 has as well.

“Every aspect of the 360 experience leads to a very panoramic view of what this university has to offer,” Hannah said. “I wanted to help students understand our campus as a fellow Duck.”

Portland-located 360 Labs created the app, where some of the video editing was performed by a UO alum Rachel Bracker. In addition, the EMU Craft Center lent many hands in creating a VR headset for the Oregon Duck, an exact replica of those that students are about to receive, down to the graphics and operating button.

The University of Oregon was one of the first institution to bring their campus to prospective students in this way. While the goggles are great, any virtual reality headsets for smartphones can pair with the UO 360 VR app.

“The University of Oregon is known for innovation and defying convention, and I can’t think of a better way for potential students to connect with that spirit, connect with our campus, and experience what it truly means to be a Duck,” said Kyle Henley, vice president for University Communications. “This technology is amazing and immersive, and I cannot wait to see and hear how prospective students respond. We really think this is going to be big.”

Hannah Lewman and Travis Kim with the Duck VR goggles

Horizons broaden for both Hannah Lewman and Travis Kim after working on UO 360

Get ready to pick your jaw up off the floor.

All across the country, prospective UO students are in for something extraordinary when they receive their VR goggles and download the 360 app . Just ask the UO alum who wrote all of the corresponding copy and stories that will guide viewers through the experience.

Hannah Lewman

“I haven’t seen a single person whose jaw didn’t drop after putting the goggles on,” says Hannah Lewman, who developed the narrative for the project. “I think prospective students will find it as magical as everyone else I’ve seen who puts them on.”

Hannah spent her time researching all aspects of campus before sitting down to write every single word that appears throughout the entire experience. A former student director at Allen Hall Advertising, she was joined by Travis Kim, also a co-director at the student-run advertising agency.

“We want to create a sense of belonging, and to be able to convey that sense,” Travis, who has also worked as a student orientation staffer and for EMU Marketing, says. “The more we engage, the more we can create a positive connotation about the University of Oregon.”

Travis Kim

Originally from Hawaii, Travis remembers his first visit to UO and how shocked he was. “I couldn’t believe how tall the trees were, and the scenery was just incredible,” he adds.

Now, students who aren’t able to make the journey for a campus visit can experience the same thing Travis did—but from the east coast, the southwest, and even his home state of Hawaii.

Hannah, who grew up in Portland, agrees. “You can’t get that in a brochure,” she laughs.

Although hard-pressed to declare a favorite adventure on the 360 app, Hannah was surprised how much she liked the Autzen stadium option, in which the viewer gets a real sense of what it’s like to ride on a motorcycle onto the field during a football game.

While testing out the VR goggles for the first time, both were struck by the clarity of not only the visuals, but the auditory sense as well.

“It’s location-based,” Travis explains. “It moves from left to right as you move left to right. It’s almost scary realistic, you almost think you’re going to get hit by that motorcycle or the football players rushing out to the field. It really does immerse you. There’s nothing that hinders that experience.”

The opportunity that both Hannah and Travis had to work on the project was invaluable, although it meant keeping a big secret.

“We wanted to tell everyone about it,” Travis says as Hannah nods.

Hannah Lewman's sketches for the project

Hannah also had the opportunity to work directly with content developers at the 360 lab in Portland. It was such an influential experience that it changed her outlook on potential careers. That year she thought she would be applying to ad agencies but after going to 360 Labs , she applied to content studios and places beyond traditional advertising firms.

For Travis, the project made him more aware of the rapidly changing communication landscape, and how he, as a communicator, can adjust to the changing technology moving forward.

“I’m excited to see where people take it,” he says about UO 360. “I think it’s just going to be amazing. People have never seen this from a university before.”

Civil Engineering students compete at regional steel bridge event

civil_engineering_students_travel_to_2024_steel_bridge_competition

As part of the American Society of Civil Engineers and American Institute of Steel Construction, students from Oregon Tech’s Civil Engineering program participated in the Pacific Northwest Student Steel Bridge Competition held April 6 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The competition challenged students to design, fabricate, and construct a structurally efficient 20-foot-long steel bridge to safely support 2,500 pounds. The teams were required to determine how to fabricate their bridge and plan for an efficient assembly under timed construction conditions at the competition. Bridges are also load-tested, weighed, and judged on aesthetics.

The competition gave students applied experience, an opportunity to combine skills and creativity, and training in teamwork, communication, and project management.

Oregon Tech placed ninth out of 12 teams. Although the team’s bridge experienced a weld failure before it was fully loaded, it ranked slightly higher in lightness and economy.

Civil Engineering Professor and team advisor C.J. Riley, Ph.D., said the team had a great build time compared to practice builds. Additionally, Riley used the travel time to continue teaching.

“We took a fantastic driving tour around Vancouver looking at various bridges, Stanley Park, and the Low-Level Road Project, which won an Envision Platinum Sustainability Award. It had been discussed extensively during our CE405 Sustainability and Infrastructure course and it was awesome to see it in person,” Riley said.

Sophomore Caitlin Lien presented a technical paper at the competition exploring the professional ethics of artificial intelligence in civil engineering design. Riley also provided impromptu tensile testing lessons for Lien, who missed a metals tensile testing lab to attend the competition.

Riley said the inclusion of freshmen and sophomores on the team ensures team continuity in the next year and beyond.

“Our steel bridge captains this year were seniors Serena Moha and Alejandro Quinonez,” Riley said. “Captains and upperclassmen serve as mentors for our younger students, and I am excited to share that while we didn’t have a concrete canoe to enter the competition this year, we brought two students who are planning to be canoe team captains next year. They experienced the competition and are getting a head start on creating a new mold, working on mix designs, and generally organizing the lab and our materials for success next year.”

2023-2024 Steel Bridge Team members: Daniel Duyvestein Bryson Ladd DJ Lopez (American Society of Civil Engineers-Associated General Contractors ASCE-AGE chapter president) Serena Moha (captain) Alejandro Quinonez (co-captain) Aiden Shields

Other students who traveled to Vancouver: Sadie Brackeen (ASCE-AGC chapter treasurer) Abbey Briley (ASCE-AGC chapter vice president) Caitlin Lien (technical paper and future concrete canoe captain) September Sahnow (future concrete canoe captain)
