Peter Manning NYC Review: Read This Before You Buy (2022)

Published on October 1, 2022 by Brock McGoff · Product Reviews May contain affiliate links ( what's this? )

This is an honest, long-term review of Peter Manning NYC, a clothing brand that makes classic American clothes for short men.

Peter Manning NYC review

If you’re thinking about buying Peter Manning clothes, you’ve come to the right place!

I’ve tried on just about everything Peter Manning NYC makes, from their t-shirts and jeans to their suits and outerwear.

There are a few Peter Manning pieces that still have a place in my closet, but I have to pass on most of their collection due to inconsistent fit, odd color/fabric choices, and high prices.

In this detailed, hands-on and unsponsored PMNYC review, I’ll show you how everything fits and give you my recommendation on what to buy and what to avoid.

About Peter Manning NYC

There are only a few brands that cater to short men. Peter Manning is one of these. In fact, they focus exclusively on men 5’8″ and under.

They’ve been around since 2012, but the original founder (Peter) is no longer involved in the company.

An online first brand with a physical showroom in NYC’s Flatiron neighborhood, PMNYC carries shirts, pants, formalwear and outerwear.

For reference, I’m 5’6” in shoes and about 125 lbs after dinner. I have a 35” chest and almost always order XS tops.

My off-the-rack suit jacket size would be 34S, and my ideal pant size is usually 28×28.

What I Tried

Here are the pieces in this review:

  • Peter Manning Everyday Shirt

Peter Manning Short Sleeve Shirt

Peter manning nyc jeans, peter manning polo shirts, peter manning t-shirts.

  • Peter Manning NYC Chino Shorts

Tribeca Field Jacket

Peter manning leather jacket, peter manning down jacket, peter manning nyc suits & sportcoats, the peter manning aesthetic.

Certain brands do a great job of creating a desirable overarching aesthetic, a collection of pieces that can be easily paired into an endless combination of stylish outfits.

Think J.Crew, Ralph Lauren, Everlane, Bonobos, ASKET, Taylor Stitch, Billy Reid, etc.

This isn’t easy. Brands that do this successfully rely on the direction of talented, trained stylists and creative directors who know how to match colors and fabrics to create a cohesive collection.

Menswear brands that are run by entrepreneurs, not fashion designers, tend to struggle with aesthetics and cohesion.

Peter Manning has this problem.

If you try on a bunch of things from Peter Manning NYC, you’ll likely find one or two items that work in your wardrobe. But it’s a difficult to build a 100% Peter Manning outfit without looking a bit…off.

This is due to a lack of contemporary fits, mismatches between product categories, and odd color/pattern choices.

Some of the colors they release are simply tough to match with anything:

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Peter Manning NYC (@petermanningnyc)

Others are okay on their own but don’t gel with the rest of the collection:

Tonal schemes like red-on-red can work, but this washed out brick red henley doesn’t go with the bright red buffalo plaid shirt.

Bottom line: even if you’re into the PMNYC style (classic fit, preppy aesthetic), don’t assume every item from this brand can be worn together.

Peter Manning Everyday Shirts

Possibly the brand’s most popular product, this button up shirt falls somewhere between dressy and casual.

For me, it’s just short enough to wear untucked, but if I tuck it in, it’s a bit billowy around the waist.

Peter Manning Everyday Shirt fit

The shirt is pre-washed, so it feels soft and broken in. It’s very comfortable.

Peter Manning shirt details

The sleeves are a bit roomy for my arms. I actually had a different Peter Manning Everyday Shirt tailored for a slimmer fit, and it looks much better.

I’ve also tried on Peter Manning’s short sleeve button up shirts.

Peter Manning short sleeve button up

Again, these are a bit boxy on my somewhat thin frame (I’m about 5’6″ and 125 lbs). But this one is a good length for wearing untucked, which in nice!

Peter Manning makes a few different styles of jeans, all available in shorter inseams. I’ve tried their standard, slim and skinny jeans.

Slim vs skinny jeans

I own two pairs of Peter Manning standard fit jeans , one dark blue and one medium blue (shown here). The length is good, but they’re not as slim as I’d like.

They do have a medium rise, which I prefer over low-rise pants , but the top block is too tight for athletic builds (i.e., the jeans are tight around the hips, especially in skinny fit).

Peter Manning medium blue jeans

The jean styles can feel a bit…classic. This is a good thing if you’re going for that #dadstyle look!

I’ve tried three different Peter Manning polos: the James Polo (a classic pique polo), the Pocket Polo, and the Long Sleeve Polo.

Of the three styles, my favorite would be the Pocket Polo due to the slimmer fit.

Grey polo with olive chinos

The James Polo is your standard pique polo. The body length is a bit shorter than polos you’ll find off the rack.

Brock-wearing-black-PM-James-Polo-rotated

The fit is standard (cut straight through the torso).

The Long Sleeve Polo didn’t fit as well on me.

Blue long sleeve polo 7

The shoulders were too wide and sleeves too long.

Note: PMNYC did release a new version of the LS polo, which was more fitted, but the forearms were impossibly tight (even on my skinny arms!).

I’ve worn Peter Manning’s pima cotton tees for a while. The fit is okay, but I still prefer Uniqlo tees (which are way cheaper).

Pink t-shirt khaki shorts

On me, Peter Manning tees are tight around the biceps but loose in the midsection.

I’ve also noticed that the collars get wrinkly after a couple of washes, which can only be fixed by ironing (not something I’m willing to do).

PMNYC Chino Shorts

I have a pair of Peter Manning chino shorts that I got taken in for a slimmer fit, and they’re some of my favorite shorts.

Unaltered, PMNYC chino shorts feature a straight leg and wider leg opening:

If you prefer this sort of traditional shorts fit, these might be a good fit for you, but check out this list of the best chino shorts first .

Like all Peter Manning outerwear, the Tribeca Field Jacket has a classic (boxy) fit.

Fortunately, it has internal drawstrings you can use to suppress the torso to your liking.

Tribeca field jacket back

I do wish the sleeves were about 2″ shorter.

Jeans henley field jacket

I find that this jacket looks much better if I cuff the sleeves, essentially hemming them by ~2 inches.

Despite the sleeves being about an inch too long, this is still the only non-custom leather jacket I’ve found with a workable sleeve length.

For that reason alone, I’ve gotten a lot of wear out of this jacket over the years.

PMNYC leather jacket

My one big gripe with the Peter Manning Lambskin Leather Jacket is the fit through the torso.

It’s a wide, boxy fit, especially on my svelte frame. Zipped up, there’s a lot of extra room, even if I’m wearing a couple layers underneath.

PM leather jacket 3

Unzipped, it looks fine, but I still wish it was slim fit (like a leather jacket should be, in my opinion).

Also, the lambskin gets very wrinkly. I don’t mind this, but it’s something to keep in mind.

See my full Peter Manning leather jacket review for more details.

I sound like a broken record, but this down jacket has a roomy, boxy fit, especially for thinner guys.

It would probably work better on a hefty or stocky frame, but not someone with an athletic build (i.e., a large chest to waist drop).

Peter Manning down jacket

I also think the style of this jacket leaves something to be desired. The contrast zippers and lining aren’t ‘really my thing.

Compare this Peter Manning down jacket to a similar jacket from Everlane , for example:

Everlane Puffer GREATS High Tops 2

The Everlane puffer fits better and looks cooler.

When it comes to finding a suit that fits well as a shorter guy, jacket length and sleeve length are often the biggest problems.

Peter Manning suit jackets and sport coats do come with shorter jacket and sleeve lengths.

But the overall style and fit is pretty classic. It’s not slim fit, and the styles aren’t very contemporary.

Basically, you’re not going find the Suitsupply aesthetic here.

Considering the price point, I actually recommend buying suits off the rack and getting them tailored, or going custom.

Buying a made-to-measure or bespoke suit isn’t as difficult or expensive as it used to be, and you’ll be able to choose any fabrics and details you like.

Is Peter Manning Worth It?

If you can stomach the price tag and don’t mind a traditional, somewhat boxy fit, Peter Manning may be a good choice for shorter men who can’t find shirts or outerwear that fits off the rack.

If you need pants shorter than 28 inches, and you’re willing to pay a premium to avoid hemming, you may like PMNYC’s pants collections too.

Peter Manning suits have a classic fit. The length works for shorter guys, but if you’re slender of athletic, you’ll likely need alterations. For the same price, you can consider going custom.

Generally, this brand is best for guys who prefer a classic, preppy fit and aesthetic (think Eddie Bauer or Tommy Bahama).

For the price, Peter Manning activewear isn’t as appealing as the competition (Ten Thousand lululemon, Rhone, Olivers, etc.).

FAQs About Peter Manning NYC

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about PMNYC:

Who owns Peter Manning?

Jeff Hansen is the majority owner of Peter Manning NYC. Its original founder, Peter, is no longer involved in the company.

Does Peter Manning have sales?

Yes, Peter Manning has several sales each year. Given the prices, it’s a good idea to wait for these sales.

Peter Manning vs. Ash & Erie?

Overall, I recommend Ash & Erie because they have slimmer fits and more modern designs. Personally, I wear more Ash & Erie items than PMNYC items.

Is Peter Manning worth it?

Peter Manning is worth it if you’re very short (under 5’6″) and can’t or don’t want to get your clothes tailored. It’s very easy to get pants hemmed and sleeves shortened, so I mostly recommend Peter Manning for guys who don’t want to go to the tailor and like the classic, preppy aesthetic.

Be sure to check out other shorter guy brands like Ash & Erie and Under 510 too!

I just ordered a bunch of items from Peter Manning and had to send most of them back—twice. I’m 5-foot-6 and 185 lbs (dad weight … sob), and the initial fit recommendation was 4X, which I fell outside the weight range of, but, OK, let’s give it a try. It was immediately obvious when I tried the items on that they weren’t the right size. But even when I exchanged them for 4XL, the right size according to the company’s sizing chart, the items were too tight around my stomach, and the T-shirts rode way up if I lifted my arms. Only the 4XL jacket fit. One item out of seven is not a great batting average. Customer service was great, but I’m not confident enough in Peter Manning’s sizing to buy from it again.

May 4, 2023 at 9:34 am

I think your build is not average: 125lbs? I’m 5′ 6″, 159 lbs fit and PMNYC shirts are actually a bit snug but the pants at 31 slim/skinny fit me well.

But I def. agree that you can’t do 100% PMNYC; but then you shouldn’t do 100% on any brand, if you ask me.

Good review though!

Hey Brock, what is the status of your business connection to PM now? Thanks!

April 11, 2023 at 12:34 pm

Hi Steve, TMM doesn’t have any relationship w/ PM (no affiliate links or sponsorships).

January 5, 2023 at 6:40 am

Thank you for the update. Have been watching your channel for a few years. I am about the same build as you. I also wear size 1. Just wondering what you think about their flannel shirt jacket. Thanks.

January 5, 2023 at 12:03 pm

Thanks for following! I’ve worn one of PM’s flannel overshirts for a while now. The fit is pretty solid (sleeves are slightly long on me), but it hasn’t aged very well (i.e., lots of loose threads and buttons). I have a similar one from ASKET that feels a bit higher quality. I also like “shackets” that have hand pockets. To me, a shirt/jacket with two chest pockets looks too much like a regular flannel shirt. Just my two cents!

First, I have to laugh, since after reading the comments, I see that you are 5’6” which is exactly what I pegged you at from your pictures! Second, You have no idea how excited I am to discover clothing designed for shorter men. My husband is 5’5” (on a good day) and has an inseam of 26 3/4” (I told him he had a 27” inseam after I measured—he has always worn 32-34×30 pants am I always have to take them up a lot!) He can never find pants short enough. He also looks really funny in shorts, (so does my son who inherited the no-leg gene from both sides) so thanks for putting this info out there!

I always struggle buying long sleeve shirts. The sleeves and torso length are always too long. Hopefully Peter Manning will be a good option to purchase better fitted shirts as I am switching to the corporate workforce.

So are you actually wearing a size down from their recommended size?

Their fit chart told me I was a 2, and I just tried on an “Everyday” shirt, and it’s a bit baggy. :/ Think I’ll return and try a size 1. For the record, I’m 5′ 4″, 135lbs

Thanks for the site Brock!

December 7, 2015 at 7:28 pm

Yeah but keep in mind, I prefer a close, slim fit (I’m about 125 lbs). Size 1 should fit you well.

December 8, 2015 at 8:25 pm

Dang, 5′ 6″ 125lb?! Maybe I need to be buying running shoes instead of shirts. :p Jk. yeah I like a closer fit too. Gonna try the 1. Thanks a lot!

January 5, 2016 at 9:59 pm

For the record, I exchanged the shirt for a size 1, and it is about as perfect as I could possibly hope for. Best fitting button up I’ve ever owned. Thanks again!

July 24, 2015 at 12:52 pm

Thanks for the review. Personally, I have great trouble finding the right clothes to fit me. I am 5 feet 4 inches and of a heavy built.

Over the last few years I have found the perfect online stores for shirts. I prefer custom shirts now – I frequent the websites of indochino.com and vitruvien.com. Both these websites offer great shirts at great prices. Frankly, I would prefer them to off the rack.

However, I am still on the lookout for well fitting trousers. Somehow the sites i have tried have not worked for me. Will give Peter Manning a shot. Thanks for the tip!

Hi Brock – I just received a pair of shorts and a pair of chinos from Peter Manning – over $250 but I thought it would be worth it. They both have a rise of 11 inches, are baggy in the leg (despite claiming to be slim fit) and are far too big in the waist. Did I use a different Peter Manning? Help!

' src=

November 27, 2014 at 3:30 pm

I would definitely try those on. It’s really hard for me (5plot) to look for some stuff that will fit for my body. It’s also kinda embarrassing for me to look in kids section for my size:D and I am 23 y’old already.

' src=

October 28, 2014 at 7:07 pm

Any suggestions for suits? We’re running into a stone wall of jackets built for 6′ tall men in all the stores.

July 31, 2014 at 9:56 pm

I love Peter Manning clothes. I can’t express how happy I am to be able to order for a clothing company and know the items I receive will not only fit but also attract positive feedback from the people around me. I’ve had a few people ask where I got my green chino’s from – They are easily the best fitting pants I have ever worn.

The only down side? Living in Australia it costs ~$125 to ship the clothes. It means that I need to order more than I would like to at a time to justify the shipping cost. It would be great if Peter Manning could work out a way to provide cheaper shipping for single items, then I would truly be in short guy heaven! That said, I am very grateful that the company does provide international shipping because I would be lost without them!

' src=

June 29, 2014 at 7:50 am

I bought chinos and a jumper from Peter Manning. I live in Europe and shipping was very expensive. To be honest it made the exercise uneconomic. The clothes do seem tailored for small guys. I’m 6 ft 6 in and slim. I also felt they cut was not very fashionable so it is a conservative look, useful for business casual.

July 10, 2014 at 11:23 am

Hey Ciaran,

Sorry to hear the shipping was so expensive. They’re a small company, so hopefully when they grow (with our support) they’ll be able to offer better rates to overseas customers.

Thanks for leaving your feedback…much appreciated!

Thanks for this blog! I am married to a 5’7″ man and finding clothing, and jeans in particular, is such a nightmare. He’s not one to shop so it’s all on me to prevent him from walking around in badly fitting pants but it seems like they are ALL designed for super tall guys. I had seen an article about Manning online but was skeptical so it’s really great to have a reviewof the jeans AND the shirts. I’m going to order him some today and see how it goes.

Glad to hear the review was helpful, and thanks for looking out for your man! Let me know how the Peter Manning clothes fit.

Manning does ship to Canada, but the cost to Toronto for a $98 US pair of jeans is $25 US. That’s currently a total of $157 Cdn. Then there is $29 Cdn in duty that bumps the price to $186 Cdn. They’re good jeans, but expensive for Canadians. A pair of Levi 516 jeans, costs about $65 Cdn in Canada. A seamstress or tailor can alter the inseam for a lot less than $120 Cdn.

' src=

June 6, 2014 at 9:00 am

As like Barrie, I’m also wondering about the “if Peter Manning does international orders and what would be the approximate shipping cost for a shirt and jeans.” Or the about the availability of the product in Canada.

July 6, 2017 at 7:05 pm

A $98 US pair of jeans costs $25 US for delivery, so $159 Cdn plus $29 Cdn in for duty. Grand total is $188.Canadian for jeans. They’re okay, but so are Levis. You can do a lot of tailoring in Canada to a pair of Levi 516s for about half that to alter the inseam.

June 5, 2014 at 11:57 pm

G’day Brock, I subscribe to your newsletter and find it helpful. Like you I am a “shorty” and those alterations keep getting expensive. Like $AU17 just to take up a too-long polo shirt. I was wondering if Peter Manning does international orders and what would be the approximate shipping cost for a shirt and jeans. It’the sixth day (D-Day) of winter here and it’s bloody cold. Anyway Brock, have a good weekend. (We have a long weekend to honor the Queen’s Birthday). Cheers mate, Barrie Osborne (Port Melbourne — Australia) ng

June 4, 2014 at 11:20 pm

Looking good Brock! And you’re so right, the difference is in the details. I particularly like the lengths of these Peter Manning shirts, they are just perfect. For a long time I thought I was doing a decent job by taking my shirts to a tailor, but Peter Manning takes scale and fit to another level.

June 5, 2014 at 1:00 pm

Hey, if you’re getting your shirts tailored, you’re ahead of most guys! But you’re right, you can really fix the details/scale. It is a whole other level.

June 8, 2014 at 12:51 pm

Thanks. I look forward to your future posts.

I bought several pieces for my son without knowing what size would fit him but wasn't worried since they state that returns are easy as 1-2-3. While they are easy and free it took them over 2 weeks after receiving my return to refund me. In the meantime I was taking a trip to NY so I visited the store and placed another $350 order. Sizing is off in the shirts, even with the help of the sales asst. and the fabric of the polos is stiff. My son liked the travel jeans but the polos, flannel shirt jacket and everywhere pants will all be returned. I will update if the refund comes quicker this time around. Negative reviews on their site get deleted so if you are like me and rely on reviews don't think you are getting honesty on their site.

I have a hell of a time getting clothes to fit me. I am just under 5'8 and don't have wide shoulders. If I find something I really like, I look for it in XS and still may have to go to a tailor to have it shortened and/or tapered. I NEVER buy clothes online as sizes are never consistent. I live in Toronto and the only store for smaller-framed men is primarily formal wear; not what I was looking for. I was excited to visit Peter Manning NYC last week when I was in the Big Apple. I was not disappointed. Jeremy was the salesperson and was very helpful. He explained that the store does not carry all the stock - it's primarily for fitting - orders would be placed online and shipped. He helped me find 3 items and, to my delight, a discount for new customers AND free shipping - arrived in 4 days. Thanks!

Hi Steve, Thanks again for stopping by and we are so happy that you were able to swing by and find something. It's literally one of the reasons we started this. Drop by anytime you are around.

Ordered $750 suit online which didn't fit me well unfortunately after trying it on therefore I returned the item back within 10 days of ordering. They responded stating that the suit was worn which I only tried on to ensure it fits. Worst return policy and will never shop here again.

Sep 27, 2023

Hi Johayer, It's frankly quite surprising to see you paint us in a negative light. First off, we noticed that you were taking advantage of our first-time customer discount policy by creating multiple accounts to receive the discount more than once. We appreciate your loyalty to our brand and have tolerated it a few times as we understand that everyone loves a good deal, but you've gone overboard with dozens of accounts. As for the suit you recently returned, it was clearly worn - all wrinkled and beat up. Even the vents and pockets that were originally sewn shut were open, and the pants have their fair share of stains. We are not in the business of renting suits, and we don't appreciate you using the review system to put pressure on us. Thank you.

This will be my third time posting a review. The first two times, on their website, my review was taken down. So hopefully this one stays. It's incredibly dishonest to continue to delete negative feedback and reviews. Peter Manning has been my go to for polos. I've bought a few of them over the last couple years, and they fit PERFECTLY. Absolutely love them. I recently purchased another, because, if 3 were perfect, I'd assume the 4th would be too. The first one I received was insanely short. I'm 5'7" and in shape, and this didn't even cover up my belt. The website says the back is 26", and my other 3 polos were exactly that. The new one was around 24". I exchanged for the same color/size, thinking this was a dud. But the second one I received wasn't much better. Extremely short (think borderline belly shirt). Again, measured 1.5"-2" shorter than my other 3 of the same model. I'm not sure what's going on with new sizing or cuts on the polos, but it's not good. It would be great if they brought back the previous sizing or cut of the polos since they USED to be amazing.

Hi Matt, We understand that the Polos may not be working for you as they used to, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. While we have made some adjustments to the length over the years, the Polo you purchased still adheres to our current measurements posted in the size chart. Our team took the extra step of measuring the Polo you returned, which confirmed it to be 26 inches. We have sent you a photo in our last email. Please know that our intention is never to mislead you, and we sincerely apologize if it has come across that way.

Peter manning is my goto for pants, being 5'4" it's hard to find pants in regular stores. Sad to say, going on my last trip I purchased a pair of fairly expensive dress pants to wear. Getting ready to travel to the airport I placed my foot in and ripped the hem. Not my toe, but my heel pulled the hem loose. No time to get it repaired, so they stayed home. I would expect more from this store. I've bought many pairs of Jeans, etc from Peter, and never expected anything like this. Will hesitate to order from them again. Sorry.

I have been buying clothes here for a few years. They cater to short men, but any times don't have my size. Seems like they cater to short skinny men. Pants that have bought in the past have the right dimensions except they are always a little fight on the legs. Even though, they always fit better than off the rack without being altered.

Very interesting to note that when I put this review up on the Peter Manning site, they took it down within minutes. I only wish they did something that quickly when they were dealing with my issue. "They have great clothes, surprisingly terrible customer service. Not going to go into the details here because I don't want to bore you. I just expected way better customer service from a company that I've spent thousands of dollars on. I would contact them by phone about this matter, but the phones are rarely answered. I contacted them via e-mail and the terse, unhelpful replies that I received led me to write this review. Very disappointing and it makes me want to look for a different company to spend my future thousands of dollars on." What happened was that the post office lost the return for a few days. Good customer service would have been a reply like, "We're so sorry this happened. Don't worry about it. Let's see what happens and we will file a missing package complaint with the USPS." Instead, I received an email saying, "I would recommend contacting Post Office where you dropped off the package." I know the grammar is off...I didn't write the e-mail. I just don't know why this is the customer's responsibility. After doing this and the local post office told me the package wasn't there, I emailed "support" again asking what do I do next? Here's the reply I received: "Please provide a written confirmation from USPS that package was lost." No instructions. Just this one sentence. What exactly is written confirmation from USPS. What do I do? Do I get a letter from my postman? Do I go straight to the postmaster general? A little more info would have been very helpful here. So, I took it upon myself to go online to the post office website to have them search for the missing package. Again, not the customer's responsibility and I did this on my own. No instructions given by Peter Manning customer service. I figured this out all on my own. in doing all this I saw (looking at the tracking number) that it actually was logged in by the USPS, so they had received my package. It just got lost along the way. Peter Manning could have easily done this as well, not leaving it to the customer to do it for them. Instead I received the e-mail, "If you dropped off the package at the Post Office, they must have something that will confirm that. We haven't had any returns get lost in transit so far..." If this is the case, why didn't customer service check to confirm this? Why do you leave it up to the consumer who followed the return directions word for word? I forwarded all USPS e-mails about this matter to Peter Manning support and eventually the item was found and returned to Peter Manning. I'm worried to think what would have happened if it actually was lost forever. In short, good customer service is not making the customer do your job. At the very least, some instructions about how this whole process works would have been better customer service. You have disappointed me greatly Peter Manning. Your fight over $198 pants is definitely not worth the thousands of dollars I would have spent over my lifetime with your company.

Take some of these negative reviews with a grain of salt. I've shopped here for years with always solid results. I'm 5'5. I have longer legs for a guy my height but a shorter torso- like a super short torso. So this place is a godsend. You might miss the shop if you're not looking for it. Give them a shot if you're not so tall.

Photo of Silvia M.

Their return system is terrible. Don't order unless you already know how their clothes fit.

Photo of Lee E.

First of all, do not use their mail order service including the 7 day trial, then pay offer. Thus far they have charged my credit card no less than 8 times with pending charges then charges. SCAM. Second, this is not designer quality clothing. It is terrible quality cotton thrown together. Sizing makes no sense whatsoever.

Photo of Jamie K.

i am a 5'5" transgender man. went in here to buy a tuxedo shirt for a wedding. christina was very helpful. was treated normally. size 2x fit amazing without any alterations. i will be back!

Forget the Tailor and Just Buy Better-Fitting Garments

Peter Manning NYC designs and develops garments for the not-so-tall guy by focusing on proper proportions without sacrificing style.

Forget-the-Tailor-and-Just-Buy-Better-Fitting-Garments-Gear-Patrol-lead-full

By Gear Patrol Studios

0021_PeterManning_SPONSOR-BAR

The value any garment can offer comes down to fit — the most luxe Italian suit is ineffectual if you’re swimming in it. Peter Manning NYC knows how vital fit is — specifically designing clothing for the not-so-tall guy. The average US male is 5-feet-9-inches, so Peter Manning NYC focuses on the 30 percent of men who are not average height or taller.

Settling for ill-fitting shirts and too-long pants can be a common problem for that 30 percent. Peter Manning NYC is solving a big problem for lots of guys with fresh looks in more modest sizes, shirts with proper sleeve and body lengths and pants with shorter inseams. Below are four standout styles that’ll save you a visit to the tailor.

Harrington Jacket

Forget-the-Tailor-and-Just-Buy-Better-Fitting-Garments-Gear-Patrol-inline-1-v2

Outerwear is particularly difficult to have tailored without ruining proportions and spending a fortune. For its classic Harrington Jacket , Peter Manning NYC implemented shorter sleeve and body lengths for a better fit. It also features scaled-down pockets and collar for a trim look. A ribbed trim at the cuff and hem, along with a durable cotton/nylon shell with a warm plaid lining, make this one a no-brainer for Spring.

Slim Fit Jeans

Forget-the-Tailor-and-Just-Buy-Better-Fitting-Garments-Gear-Patrol-inline-2-v2

Most retailers only carry pants down to a 30-inch inseam. Peter Manning NYC inseams go down to 26 inches. Proportions of a jean such as pocket size, rise and leg opening are all taken into account with the Slim Fit Jeans as well. This is a crucial detail that can’t be fixed when you buy a pair of pants with a longer inseam and attempt to have a tailor correct it.

Everyday Shirt

Forget-the-Tailor-and-Just-Buy-Better-Fitting-Garments-Gear-Patrol-inline-3-v2

Body length and baggy sleeves are pretty glaring concerns on a shirt that’s too big. The Everyday Shirt solves these with the hybrid-hem that allows for a tucked or untucked look. Slimmer sleeves make the puffy arm problem a thing of the past. But where Peter Manning NYC shows its commitment to shorter guys is by avoiding bold and large patterns that don’t work proportionally. And properly sizing the collar and chest pocket polish this approach to a tee.

Tech Shorts

Forget-the-Tailor-and-Just-Buy-Better-Fitting-Garments-Gear-Patrol-inline-4-v2

For shorter guys, wearing a pair of shorts that go below the knee is a no-go. Peter Manning NYC adheres to this basic rule by only offering shorts with a seven-inch inseam or less. The Tech Short is the latest pair that you can have in your arsenal for a casual outfit or working out. Made of quick-dry fabric (95 percent nylon and 5 percent elastane), the added stretch for movement creates a more versatile and comfortable short that takes proportions into account with a narrower leg for a trimmer look.

Interview with Peter Manning NYC | Clothes for Shorter Men 8 min read

By Khoi Nguyen — May contain affiliate links ( Details ) 2 Comments

Back in February, I visited the brand new Peter Manning NYC (PMNYC) Fit Shop in Manhattan. It was their second day open and I was lucky enough to meet the founder, Peter himself. We spoke a bit about style. I told him that I run a men’s style blog, and I tried on a bunch of clothing.

Interview with Peter Manning NYC: Clothes for Shorter Men | GENTLEMAN WITHIN

In this article I’m going to talk about my visit to the new fit shop. And then I’m going to share an exclusive interview with Peter himself. You’ll read about the inspiration behind the brand, what he would be doing if PMNYC didn’t exist, and what to expect from them in the coming year and beyond.

But first, a little background on PMNYC .

THE PETER MANNING STORY

The Peter Manning NYC Story | Why We Started This Company

THE PETER MANNING DIFFERENCE

Peter Manning NYC is a menswear company dedicated to designing stylish and proper fitting clothes for guys 5’8″ and under, what they’ve trademarked as the ‘not-so-tall’ guy.

Peter Manning NYC Fit Shop | GENTLEMAN WITHIN

This is a highly underserved market of roughly 30 million men in the US alone and countless millions more around the world. Many of the major retailers offer big and tall options, but fail to cater to men of modest height . Thankfully there are websites like The Modest Man, run by my buddy Brock, whose mission is to help short(er) men dress better while becoming more confident in the process.

THE PETER MANNING FIT SHOP EXPERIENCE

The fit shop is cleanly and spacious with an industrial vibe. The interior features brick walls against white walls, and flawless lighting. It’s a charming space with plenty of character.

When I arrived Peter warmly welcomed me into his shop. He immediately noticed that I was wearing his ever popular  Tribeca Field Jacket in tan. (I love the jacket so much that I had to pick up a second in olive.) We spoke style, StyleCon (now Menfluential 2018 ), and style for the shorter man. Yeah, lots of style .

Afterwards, Peter asked if I’d like to try on some of their product. He gladly assisted me through a wide selection of jeans , chinos, shirts , and jackets. It was my first time trying on their pants and the ravely reviewed Lambskin Leather Jacket , that looked and felt great . And never having owned a genuine leather jacket before, I knew it’d be a worthy addition to my wardrobe. (a handful of years later, it certainly has been.)

A few fittings later, Peter had to get going, so he introduced me to one of his associates who helped me with a few more items. I made sure to hand Peter my business card before he left. After many back and forth emails with his team, we got around to an interview, which you can read in full below. I hope you enjoy it.

Dropped into the new Peter Manning fit shop today. Even met the man himself. If you’re in the Flatiron district or around the area, come check them out! A post shared by Gentleman Within ?PHILLY (@thegentwithin) on Feb 8, 2017 at 7:52pm PST

INTERVIEW WITH PETER MANNING

What was the moment that you knew that Peter Manning NYC had become a reality?

When the first order came through on March 12th, 2012.

How did you get into menswear, did you always love it?

I did always love clothes as a kid but never thought I would be in menswear. I got into because I wanted clothes that fit and I knew there were other guys like me.

Before Peter Manning, where did you shop for clothes ?

I hated shopping because nothing ever fit correctly. I had clothes from Brooks Brothers, J Crew, Banana Republic, The Gap and various other brands from department store, like Bloomingdales. It was when I realized how MUCH I was spending at the tailor that I finally decided to start the business. I knew there had to be a better way.

Where did your inspiration for Peter Manning come from, did you have an aha moment?

I was handing over $1000 to my tailor who was fixing everything down to t-shirts and I decided that their had to be a better way. Also, it was from observing guys whose clothes looked and fit great and wanting to look like that. Us not-so-tall guys know what clothes should look like we just had nowhere to get it.

Have you noticed a renaissance of sorts when it comes to men’s style and men taking better care of themselves and how they dress?

Absolutely. Men care more about what they wear and I think that has helped our guy find us because they want to look great too and have not had options. Men fashion and style is a much bigger story than it was ten years ago. We think that’s great.

30 million men, that’s a lot of guys in the US alone. Why do you think that the big box retailers are so reluctant to serve this market?

I have come to believe it is stigma. Stigma against not-so tall guys, a lack of understanding how best reach them, and the fact that this customer hasn’t had a way to communicate to retailers their needs. We always say there are not guys walking around naked. Our customer has made do, but it hasn’t felt or fit great.

Peter Manning features high quality, classic clothing for men of modest height (5’8″ and under), a highly underserved category in menswear. Thier new fit shop in Manhattan looks gorgeous. Come see for yourself. A post shared by Gentleman Within ?PHILLY (@thegentwithin) on Feb 8, 2017 at 8:05pm PST

In “The Story of Peter Manning, a short film” you mentioned it all began because you wanted a pair of bell-bottoms…what about a line of PMNYC bell-bottoms?

No Bell Bottoms. But the Bell Bottoms are really a metaphor for the not-so-tall guy wanting and needing the same things that every guy wants and not being able to get them. We are changing that.

Was there any other names that you considered or did you always know you wanted to name your clothing company after yourself?

I definitely did not intend to use my name. My working title was Five Eight/New York, which is still part of our brand name and logo. I met with a branding firm very early on and they encouraged me to use my name, because it such was good name for a menswear line (of any kind) and it would resonate with the customer because I was in the same boat. I came around to it reluctantly but it was the right decision.

Sometimes it’s tough to find the right wording. How long did it take for you guys to land on ‘not-so-tall’?

It is tough. As noted above, there is a stigma that we deal with and we do try to avoid the word “short”. We worked with “5’8” and under” for a while. My partner, Jeff Hansen, came up with “not-so-tall”. It felt right and we think our customers appreciate it. We want to do whatever we can for this guy to come on board because wearing clothes that fit is transformative. It really is.

What would you be doing if Peter Manning NYC didn’t exist?

Big Question. At this point in my life, I would probably being doing something mission driven where I would be spending the majority of my time helping those in need. Not sure exactly what that would look like.

Sneak preview of what’s next on GentlemanWithin.com. Guess where this was taken? A post shared by Gentleman Within ?PHILLY (@thegentwithin) on Mar 27, 2017 at 5:21pm PDT

What has been the biggest struggle for Peter Manning NYC as a small company that’s grown so much in the last few years?

As we grow, one of our biggest challenges is keeping inventory in stock but we have come a long way and thankfully and gratefully our customer is patient. Our other biggest challenge is getting the word out. We are a new category in Menswear. Reaching the 5’8” and under man is tricky. It’s frustrating because we know that once they try us they’ll love it, it is just finding them and getting them over the initial reluctance that takes a lot of work.

Is there anything you can say about new offerings from Peter Manning NYC in the coming year and beyond?

We will be introducing a new cotton sweater , a performance hoodie and sweat pant and a down jacket that we are excited about and we’ll be deepening inventory in the products we already have. We also are exploring some new size categories, for some slimmer and some bigger guys .

What are your short-term and long-term goals for Peter Manning NYC? Where do you see yourselves in the next year, 5 years?

Our short-term goal is to grow our customer base. We know there are so many guys who still don’t know about us and would be as passionate about us as our current customers. Over the next five years, as we continue to grow the brand awareness, we are looking to add products that our customer wants and needs and grow our Fit Shop model and expand it to cities around the country.

Why do you think that the Peter Manning message resonates so strongly with customers?

I think our message resonates because we are addressing a real need. There is an emotional component to what we do. This customer has been ignored by the apparel industry for their entire life, whether they are twenty-five or seventy-five and it doesn’t feel great. Our customer knows we really care about them.

If you’re a regular reader of Gentleman Within , then you know the importance of   wearing clothing that fits . For most of my teenage life, I wore ill-fitting clothing because baggy was the trend. As a young adult , my clothes didn’t fit because most major retailers simply shun any guy under the average male height of 5’10”.

It’s because they are providing the ‘not-so-tall’ guy with a solution to a problem that’s ailed him all his life, that the Peter Manning story resonates so strongly with me. For the record, I’m around 5’5″.

If you’re a shorter gentleman, 5’8″ or under living in or around NYC, I highly recommend you check out their fit shop in person. You can find your size and try all of their products. They’ll even ship same day, free of charge.

I want to end this by saying thank you to Peter and his team for taking the time to coordinate this interview.

Even though I’m not the nicest dressed person, I find it hard to shop for pants for my shape. All I want is a pair of perfectly fitting jeans! I finally did find some and subsequently bought three pairs. Perfectly fitting pants make all the difference for looking good and feeling good 🙂 -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

So right about that. What’s the brand? The more I’ve gotten into style the more I realized how some of my jeans/pants aren’t the best fit. It’s such a great feeling finding a brand that just nails it. Cheers!

‘Not So Tall’ Guys Finally Get Their Own Store

peter manning travel jeans

By Steven Kurutz

  • April 3, 2017

Short men need fashion love, too. The big and tall have their own specialty clothing stores, as do the plus-size, while guys the size of Daniel Radcliffe (5-foot-5), Tom Cruise (5-7) or Bruno Mars (also 5-7) may find themselves pawing through the offerings in the boys’ department.

But in March, the men’s wear brand Peter Manning, which designs for guys 5-8 and under , expanded its online business and opened a store in Manhattan. Located on the third floor of a building in the Flatiron district, the shop has a discreet presence at street level, as if to acknowledge the mild embarrassment its customers may experience on their way in and out.

“You’re not going to go into the petite store for guys,” said Jeff Hansen, the brand’s co-founder and chief executive (and, at 5-8, a customer himself). “This category is a real challenge to market.”

Thus, a semantic sleight of hand was necessary, he said: “We developed this concept of ‘not so tall.’ We also added a ‘not so tall, not so skinny’ line.”

For men who have spent a lifetime wearing ill-fitting off-the-rack clothes, the store will seem an improbable wonderland. Jeans that don’t bunch at the ankles. Suits that fit without tailoring. Dress shirts that don’t feel like dresses. Polos in a range of colors, not just the last extra-small left, in fuchsia.

Pants under a 30-inch inseam aren’t generally sold in traditional stores. But Peter Manning offers shelves of chinos, jeans and corduroys that top off at 30 and go down to 26 inches, what might be called Danny DeVito (4-10) ready-to-wear. Even the ties have been shrunken ever so slightly.

The shop has a lounge area with a bar cart, fitting rooms and salesmen who would never be mistaken for basketball players. “A lot of our guys have never really known what it’s like to wear proper-fitting clothes,” Mr. Hansen said. “We get him fitted up and looking good, and he walks out of here feeling like a million bucks.”

The label has so far focused on core pieces at a moderate price ($98 for a button-down shirt; $450 for a blazer), with an all-American style similar to that of J. Crew or Gant. George Stephanopoulos (5-7) and Michael J. Fox (5-4) are both customers. Style has not been sacrificed for fit.

“At our old showroom in Brooklyn, we’d have guys that are six-feet-plus duck their head in and go: ‘Hey, I love that field jacket. Can I buy one?’ ” Mr. Hansen said. “We loved chuckling to ourselves and going, ‘Hey, sorry, doesn’t fit you . ’”

Mr. Hansen wants the Peter Manning store to be a destination for not-so-tall men across the land, who make up perhaps as much as 30 percent of the male population. That number may be higher in the city, at least from what he has observed.

“New York is just crawling with our guys; I don’t know why,” Mr. Hansen said. He thought a moment, before paying his customers a compliment. “Maybe because short guys are gunners.”

‘The Tower’, a GRU building in Khimki, Moscow

How the GRU spy agency targets the west, from cyberspace to Salisbury

Accusations mount against the Russian army’s main intelligence directorate

In Russia’s shadow war with the west, one intelligence agency keeps making headlines.

The GRU, or main intelligence directorate, of the Russian army, has been accused of spearheading several of Russia’s most notorious operations in recent years. They include the 2014 seizure of Crimea using undercover soldiers called “little green men”, the hacking theft of emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton, and even the planning of a failed coup in Montenegro .

A British security source told the Guardian on Monday that the nerve agent attack on the former double agent Sergei Skripal was also ordered by the intelligence agency. The British government is poised to submit an extradition request to Moscow for two Russians suspected of carrying out the Salisbury attack that left one person dead and three injured, including Skripal and his daughter.

One of the three main Russian intelligence agencies, less has been written about the GRU (now officially called the GU, or Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces) than its sister agencies, particularly the Soviet-era KGB or its modern successor the FSB, the spy agency once headed by Vladimir Putin .

Known for operating under a wartime mentality and a willingness to take risks, experts say the culture of the GRU has been influenced by its inclusion of Spetsnaz special forces and experience in war zones, including Syria and Ukraine .

Wreckage from Malaysian airlines flight MH17.

Open source researchers have claimed that a GRU officer supervised the transport of anti-aircraft weapons to eastern Ukraine when the Malaysian jetliner flight MH17 was shot down there, killing 298 people.

“The GRU regards itself as a war-fighting instrument. Yes, it gathers conventional intelligence … but its culture is much more military,” said Mark Galeotti, an expert on Russian security issues and the country’s intelligence agencies . “Although only a minority of GRU officers are Spetsnaz, it has an impact when part of your service are commandos.”

Besides special forces, the spy agency manages more traditional intelligence-gathering operations around the world, as well as signals intelligence.

Vladimir Rezun, a GRU officer who defected to the UK in the 1970s, wrote in his history of the agency (written under the pen name Viktor Suvorov) that it was largely tasked with preventing the collapse of the Soviet Union from without, as opposed to the KGB, which had a prominent role in thwarting internal threats.

While the KGB became notorious, the GRU largely operated in obscurity. “In the people’s consciousness, everything that is dark, underground and secret is connected with the KGB but not at all with the GRU,” he wrote.

Traditionally, Galeotti noted, the GRU answered for “uncontrolled spaces”. While in the past that has meant areas like civil wars, it may also apply to zones like cyberspace now.

US special counsel Robert Mueller

Several Russian intelligence agencies were involved in hacking operations before the 2016 US presidential elections, but only the GRU was identified in an 11-count indictment released last month by the United States special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. The hack was perpetrated by staff employees of several Moscow-based units traditionally tied to signal intelligence.

The interests of Russia’s intelligence agencies regularly overlap, as have their methods. As Christopher Andrew wrote in The Mitrokhin Archive: The KGB in Europe and the West, his study of notes on KGB files smuggled out of Russia, the agency “offered its allies lethal nerve toxins and poisons which were fatal on contact with the skin for use during ‘special actions’”.

While the GRU has largely been shrouded in secrecy, there have been occasional contacts with the west.

Peter Zwack, a retired US army brigadier general, wrote about a series of meetings before the Sochi Olympics with the head of the GRU, Igor Sergun, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack in January 2016. “I found him soft-spoken, unassuming, complex, erudite and nuanced,” he said of their meetings, which largely focused on counter-terrorism efforts.

“I learned that even as Sergun relentlessly directed global intelligence operations against our interests, he — paradoxically — also viewed constant confrontation with the US and west as not in Russia’s best long-term interest,” Zwack wrote.

Those meetings ended after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

  14. Forget the Tailor and Just Buy Better-Fitting Garments

Slim Fit Jeans. Most retailers only carry pants down to a 30-inch inseam. Peter Manning NYC inseams go down to 26 inches. Proportions of a jean such as pocket size, rise and leg opening are all taken into account with the Slim Fit Jeans as well. This is a crucial detail that can't be fixed when you buy a pair of pants with a longer inseam and attempt to have a tailor correct it.
