The PGA Tour resumes its 2022-23 season this week in Hawaii with the Sentry Tournament of Champions, which celebrates its 25th year in Maui by featuring a lineup including 17 of the top 20 players in the World Ranking.

Along with tournament winners from 2022, this year's 39-player TOC field is made up of the top 30 from last season’s final FedEx Cup points list. This week's event also is the first of 17 "elevated" events on the PGA Tour in 2023, with prize money payouts of at least $15 million.

Reigning PGA Tour player of the year Scottie Scheffler has a chance to get his new year started in style at the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort, as he has the opportunity to jump from World No. 2 to the No. 1 spot with a third-place finish or better .

This week also marks the return of Will Zalatoris, who has been out since withdrawing from the BMW Championship in August due to herniated discs in his back. A week before, Zalatoris had claimed his maiden PGA Tour win at the FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Among the others making the trip to Maui this week are Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau and Tom Kim.

Tony Finau hosted with the First Tee Hawaii an interactive event for junior golfers ahead of this week's Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Will this year’s Sentry TOC head to a playoff? Two of the last three editions have gone to extra holes, and last year's nearly did as well when Rahm just missed an eagle try on the 72nd hole. Cameron Smith came out on top shooting a PGA Tour-record 34-under 258 total for the week.

The winner on Sunday will receive 550 FedEx Cup points and a $2.7 million first-place prize money payout from the $15 million purse.

Kapalua: Plantation

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten: Most golf fans are familiar with Kapalua Golf Club’s Plantation Course, home of the PGA Tour's opening event each year. Located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Maui, the Plantation was built from open, windswept pineapple fields on the pronounced slope of a volcano and is irrigated by sprinklers pressured solely by gravity. As the first design collaboration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it unveiled their joint admiration for old-style courses. The blind drive on the fourth, the cut-the-corner drives on the fifth and sixth are all based on tee shots found at National Golf Links. So, too, are its punchbowl green and strings of diagonal bunkers. It's also a massive course, built on a huge scale, Coore says, to accommodate the wind and the slope and the fact that it gets mostly resort play. So it's a big course.

But what sets it apart in my mind are the little things. When I played the course years ago with Coore, it took only one hole for me to appreciate one of its subtleties. We were on the tee of the par-3 second, an OK hole but nothing riveting, nothing like the canyon-carry par-3 eighth or the ocean-backdropped par-3 11th. The second sits on a rare flat portion of the property. The green sits at a diagonal, angling left to right, and there's a string of bunkers staggering up the right side of the green. I suppose a lot of present-day architects would not have placed that forwardmost bunker on the hole, in the interests of playability for high-handicap resort golfers. But most of the old-time architects probably would have used such carry bunkers, especially in the days before irrigation, when greens were hard as a rock and every approach shot had to be bounced aboard. Another reason why studying the history of architecture might just help your score.

U.s. senior open venue sentryworld has become a force in the golf world by getting whatever it wants, share this article.

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — It’s the kind of decision that can cement a legacy, for better or worse, and for Pete McPartland, it came without a safety net or any time for second-guessing.

When McPartland took over as CEO of Sentry Insurance in 2012, he was immediately staring at a major decision that would ultimately define the future of the company: What to do with SentryWorld Golf Course?

Wisconsin’s first destination golf venue, which opened in 1982, was foundering after not getting the attention it needed and was no longer living up to the vision then-CEO John Joanis had for the course when he commissioned Robert Trent Jones Jr. to do the original design.

McPartland figured he had three options: sell the course and get out of the golf business; let it continue on the path it was on with perhaps some modest enhancements; or make an investment in the course with the hopes it would pump life back into a dying dream.

“The management team that had been running Sentry had not invested in the golf course and I believe, not to speak for them, but they felt it was an ancillary and possibly even distracting part of our business,” McPartland said Wednesday while sitting in a hospitality suite overlooking the 18th green.

Sentry CEO McPartland makes tough decision

It was a monumental decision for anyone, let alone for someone still feeling his way as the “new guy” on campus.

He solicited feedback, which was mixed, but ultimately the decision was his alone.

“It had been a subject that was sensitive to talk about,” he said.

After much deliberation and handwringing, McPartland decided. Sentry would go “all-in” on the golf course and what he calls the hospitality business, and it changed not only the fortunes of SentryWorld but also the insurance company.

“I didn’t feel pressure,” he said. “I absolutely knew it was the right thing. But I also knew the conscious willingness to let the golf course and, for that matter, restaurant that we have atrophied was a conscious decision that I was flying in the face of prior management. There were a lot of people that felt for financial discipline reasons, spending money on recreation, in essence, inherently represented unwise judgment. I knew there were a lot of people that think that.

“But I knew that it was certainly affordable given the size and success of the company and this would attract more customers and we needed, as an insurance company, to engage more with our own customer base. We were not as outwardly projecting as an insurance company as we needed to be.”

Restoring SentryWorld was the first step

A decade later, the fruits of McPartland’s decision were evident this week when the United States Golf Association brought the U.S. Senior Open to central Wisconsin for the first time.

McPartland said it was important at the time to return SentryWorld to its place in history as the state’s first destination golf course.

“This course means a lot to central Wisconsin. … It ushered in the era of the Kohlers and Erin Hills and, ultimately, Sand Valleys and so on,” he said. “This course had a place in history that was important.”

The first step in bringing SentryWorld back to life was getting in touch with Jones Jr. in 2013 to ask about redesigning his original layout, along with his young protégé and highly respected golf course designer Jay Blasi.

“We asked Bob at the time, is there anything you would have done over in retrospect now that you’re an older designer and you were a young designer when you built SentryWorld? And he said, ‘You know, there’s five or six holes that have been bugging me for a long time.’ We said, ‘Great, you have a do-over.’ So he had a do-over and redesigned it,” McPartland said.

The course reopened in 2015 to rave reviews. That was followed by revitalizing the restaurants at SentryWorld, the USGA bringing the U.S. Junior Girls Championship to the course in 2019, and building The Inn at SentryWorld, a hotel that runs along the 18th fairway that opened in 2022.

The USGA was so impressed with SentryWorld in 2019 that it announced in February 2021 it would bring the U.S. Senior Open to SentryWorld in 2023, which prompted another round of renovations at the course the past two years to prepare for this week’s event.

‘Anything that this golf course wants, it gets’

McPartland calls SentryWorld a “support piece” to the insurance company, with the massive resources of the core business being used to maximize the hospitality side of the business.

“The golf course became — I use this term when I talk about it — the golf course became the spoiled daughter of the insurance company,” McPartland said. “Anything that this golf course wants, it gets. Anything that (general manager) Mike James, who runs all of this, wants for the golf course or for that matter anything else, he gets.”

McPartland believed the golf course, an adjacent hotel and other amenities at SentryWorld would make it more likely customers and business partners would come see them, rather than Sentry employees having to travel to visit them.

“We reasoned that having a real neat golf course would make our campus and the desire of people to come see us more attractive,” he said.

It has worked exactly how McPartland envisioned. Not only has the USGA found a home at SentryWorld, but Sentry has found a home alongside some of the major players in the golf world.

Sentry has prominent place in golf

In 2017, Sentry became the title sponsor of the PGA Tour’s season-opening Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. That agreement was extended last August to go through 2035, and Sentry has become active in the Maui community as well as brought many of its customers and business partners to the island through the years.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan also asked if Sentry would like to become involved with First Tee, a program that introduces younger, often economically disadvantaged kids to the game of golf.

“If you become a part of the pro golf fraternity, if you’re a well-behaved, good member of it, and I certainly think we have been, other kind of accoutrements will come our way,” he said. “Didn’t solicit it. Didn’t push for it. It became a part of it. So somewhere along the line, I think we fit in and we got kind of taken under the wing by the PGA Tour and the USGA and others.”

So with all that has happened for Sentry and SentryWorld, it’s natural to wonder if McPartland thinks about the road not traveled.

What if he had decided in 2012 to get the company out of the golf business forever?

“I don’t dare think about that because my mind stops. I don’t want to think about that,” he said. “I do think a little bit if we hadn’t done everything we’ve done, where would Sentry Insurance Company be and the answer is we wouldn’t be as large, we wouldn’t have grown within our Fortune 1000 rankings the way we’ve grown. We’ve grown significantly as a Fortune 1000 company. So the branding, the customer engagement, the extent to which that helped define the culture of us as an insurance company, we couldn’t have done it without the game of golf and without the investment that we’ve done in hospitality on this campus.”

As he watched the game’s best senior golfers and thousands of fans walk around SentryWorld the past few days, McPartland couldn’t help but get a little sentimental about what has transpired since taking over in 2012.

“It really hit me this week,” he said. “Here we are, a major USGA tournament and, by golly, we have our own golf course and I’m hearing good things from the players about our own golf course in our own campus. So this week it hits me like a frying pan in the head the totality of everything that we’ve done. It’s very warming.”

Complete 2024 NFL Draft guide; Heat stun the Celtics

How to watch 2024 zurich classic, 2024 zurich classic odds, picks, computer simulation, chris kirk makes late birdie to take pga tour season opener at kapalua.

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) Chris Kirk finds pure joy in golf from the work that's required and how hard it is to succeed, and Sunday at The Sentry was plenty difficult.

A dozen players were lined up behind him, all of them capable of ripping off a low one.

The conditions were so placid the average score in the final round at Kapalua was 66.66, making this the lowest average score to par (6.34 under) of any round on the PGA Tour since it began keeping detailed records in 1983.

Tougher still was being tied for the lead, 209 yards away on the 17th hole with a gorge between him and the flag and a light wind that felt like it was blowing both directions.

Kirk went from a 7-iron to a 5-iron and hit what he considers the best shot of his career to 2 feet for birdie that sent him to an 8-under 65 and a one-shot victory over Sahith Theegala.

“When you’re about to pull 7 and you end up hitting 5, that doesn’t happen ever. That never happens,” he said. “So to be able to commit to it like I did and make that good of a swing was an incredible feeling.”

Kirk is happy to be competing again after stepping away in 2019 for alcoholism and depression, and he capped his long journey back last year by winning the Honda Classic. This was another big step, beating a world-class field on a day when any miss was costly.

Theegala stayed with him step for step until his 10-foot birdie putt swirled in and out of the cup, forcing him to settle for a 63. Jordan Spieth was tied for the lead when his tee shot on the 16th plugged into the sand right below the lip, effectively a one-shot penalty. He narrowly missed a 15-foot eagle on the final hole and shot 65 to finish third.

Kirk started the final round with a one-shot lead and had to post 65 to win by one. That was hard work. And there was a lot of joy beneath that emotionless demeanor.

There was a time when golf meant nothing to him as he cared only about salvaging a life that had become dependent on the drink.

“I love the process of working to be the best player that I can when I’m working on that, and then working on being as good of a father and husband as I can when I’m off the golf course,” he said. “It’s a constant process and I’m just loving every minute of it.”

It was the third straight year the winner at Kapalua posted a Sunday round of 8 under or better, and Kirk required no less to win the PGA Tour's season opener. Theegala started two shots behind, shot 63 and it wasn't quite enough.

“It's really hard to be sad or upset about having a nice Sunday round,” Theegala said. “Parring the last hole leaves a little bit of a sour taste. Honestly, nothing but positives. I felt like I stayed in it until the very end.”

Kirk was tied when he hit 5-iron over the gorge to a right pin on the 17th, the ball rolling out to just over 2 feet for a tap-in birdie on the toughest hole on the back nine of the Plantation course. That allowed him to play the 18th conservatively, knowing a par would be enough for his sixth career PGA Tour victory.

He finished at 29-under 263 and earned $3.6 million from the $20 million purse, the first of eight signature events in the new PGA Tour model of big purses and elite fields.

The 38-year-old from Georgia looks as relaxed as anyone, a good fit for the islands. His greatest win remains his recovery from alcoholism and depression, which led to him stepping away for six months of treatment in 2019.

The PGA Tour honored him with its “Courage Award” - he was only the sixth recipient - at the end of last season. There was no better way to start the new year.

The victory assures him a spot in the Masters - he was just outside the top 50 in the world at the end of last year - and allows him to book a return trip to Kapalua to start next year. He was making his first appearance at The Sentry in eight years.

“I'm so thankful for these last five years. It's been incredible,” Kirk said.

Spieth, who won in 2016 at Kapalua, stayed in the hunt all day with his five straight birdies around the turn. He caught up to Kirk and Theegala with birdies at the 14th and 15th. And then his chances all but ended with one swing on the 16th.

“It was a full shot (penalty) at a pretty pivotal time,” Spieth said. “But I've got to be a little tighter off the tee.”

Kirk could sense the importance of every putt, and the pressure mounted when he missed a good birdie chance on the reachable 14th with a pedestrian pitch and then missed a pair of putts from 12 feet - for eagle on No. 15 and birdie on No. 16.

But he delivered the key shot on the 17th, a birdie that gave him comfort playing the 18th and its spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and the island of Molokai on the horizon.

Sungjae Im managed to get into the PGA Tour record books with 34 birdies for the week. The previous record for a 72-hole tournament was 32 set three times, most recently last year by Jon Rahm. That illustrates what kind of test the Plantation course has become.

2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions final results: Prize money payout, leaderboard and how much each golfer won

pga tour sentry world

The 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions final leaderboard is headed by winner Jon Rahm , who won the title he narrowly lost a year ago with the PGA Tour win at Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course on Maui, Hawaii.

Rahm won this 38-player tournament with a final round of 10-under 63, turning a seven-shot starting deficit with Collin Morikawa into a big win on 27-under 265.

Morikawa, who opened the final round with a six-shot edge, shot even-par 73 in the final round, making three bogeys in a row from hole Nos. 14-16 to drop out of the lead and was never able to get it back.

Tom Hoge and Max Homa finished in a tie for third place on 23-under total.

Rahm won the $2,700,000 winner's share of the $15,000,000 purse.
