From frolicking sea otters to their picturesque oceanfront location, there is something truly marvelous about visiting Monterey Bay Aquarium with kids. With over 200 exhibits and 80,000 plants and animals, this aquarium in Central California is home to the wonders of the ocean — but the depth of the aquarium goes far deeper than fancy exhibits and impressive sea life. Showcasing a strong emphasis on conservation, it’s transforming what it means to be an aquarium and inspiring a new generation of ocean lovers. So if you’re looking to plan your own visit to this wonderful destination, you’re in the right place! Monterey Bay Aquarium with Kids: Location, Parking, and Tickets

Monterey is approximately three hours (125 miles) south of San Francisco and five and a half hours (360 miles) north of Los Angeles. Perfect for exploring this part of California with kids, the beautiful area also offers miles of beaches, hiking, and biking trails — plus nearby towns to discover the area’s history, culture, and art scene. The aquarium is situated on the stunning Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail . There’s free bicycle parking across the street from the aquarium’s entrance close to this bus turnaround. Metered street parking is available, and there are plenty of nearby lots.

For non-members, tickets must be pre-purchased online before your visit. There is no waitlist, and tickets are not available at the main entrance. After parking, hustle to the aquarium, as there will likely be a long line. The line moves efficiently, but we recommend arriving 20 minutes before opening. If you plan to visit the aquarium more than once, individual memberships start at $95. This is a far better deal than the single-day entrance. If you’re only visiting for the day, prices are as follows (as of the day of publishing): One Day Ticket: $49.95 (adults), $39.95 (youth), $34.95 (child), and four & younger are free.

Experience Monterey Bay Aquarium: Best Exhibits for Kids

If you’re looking for a fun, educational day trip with the kids, look no further than the Monterey Bay Aquarium! There are several fascinating exhibits to experience during your day, and if possible, attempt to see everything. Each exhibit is unique and takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes. Here are some of our highlights!

Are You Afraid Of The Dark: Into the Deep Exhibit

Into The Deep allows families to dive below the surface of the ocean floor to discover a dark and icy world filled with fascinating creatures! Located on the first floor, this exhibit will teach kids all about deep-sea animals in North America, like giant isopods or glowing, transparent jellies. During your journey, you will see firsthand the amazing adaptations these animals have developed to survive in the deep sea. For example, the deep water sea toad “walks” on its large fins instead of swimming to save energy. Once settled, it fishes for food with a shaggy lure on its head!

Take in the Fresh Air: Life on the Bay Exhibit

Looking for a break from the inside? Head to the Life on the Bay Exhibit , which features an ocean deck with a great view to spot wildlife like birds, otters, seals, sea lions, and even whales! This is also a great spot for photos and an excellent opportunity to relax and breathe the salty ocean air. Tell kids a fun fact, like how more than 30 species of marine mammals live in or pass through the bay, ranging from the four-foot-long sea otter to the hundred-foot-long blue whale. You’ll also find a small exhibit near the deck with life-size models of whales, dolphins, and other sea creatures. 

Watch Sea Otters Play: Sea Otters Exhibit

Kids will love watching otters eat, play, and sleep at the Sea Otters Exhibit ! This dual-floor exhibit features first-floor windows to give an underwater view of these adorable animals. Meanwhile, the second floor shows the surface, where families can see them bopping in and out of the water. During our visit, the sea otters played an entertaining ball game that seemed to delight them genuinely. We felt privileged to witness their pure joy. The exhibit also has a lot of fun facts about these animals that kids will love. For example, we learned a sea otter may hunt on the seafloor, but always returns to the surface to eat. Floating there on its back, it uses its chest as a table. It’s adorable and practical!

A Mesmerizing Underwater Forest: Kelp Forest Exhibit

Towering at 28 feet, the Kelp Forest is one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the world! This exhibit is teeming with sea life like sardines, leopard sharks, wolf-eels, and so much more. Kids will love getting up close to the animals and observing their behavior as they weave in and out of the swaying kelp – just like they do in the wild! You’ll also learn how kelp forests grow quickly — about three to five inches daily at the aquarium, and about 10 to 12 inches in the Monterey Bay. Under ideal conditions, giant kelp can grow a whopping two feet each day!

Busy Hands Delight: Touch Pools

Seeing all the incredible sea life is one thing, but it’s another to be able to touch and interact! The aquarium offers beautifully designed touch pools that bring the tide pooling experience to you. My kids were completely enamored with the touch pools; candidly, so were we! Friendly hermit crabs, anemones, and helpful staff educators make this hands-on experience truly unique. Families can visit the Bat Ray Touch Pool at different times throughout the day to see a Bat Ray Feeding . If kids have ever wondered how these flat creatures eat with their mouths by their belly buttons, they’ll be able to ask about it! 

Meet the Master of Disguise: Giant Pacific Octopus Exhibit

When it comes to octopuses, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is home to one of the biggest in the world – the Giant Pacific Octopus . This exhibit is a great opportunity for kids to learn about these complex creatures up close and how they can solve mazes and even recognize faces. They’ll also see firsthand how this octopus uses its eight arms to move through the water and grab food. In fact, did you know a full-grown giant Pacific octopus can weigh more than 50 pounds? One of the heaviest on record weighed 200 pounds and measured nearly 20 feet long! 

​​Your kids will also love learning about the other animals that live in the same habitat as the giant Pacific octopus, like the purple sea urchin or rockfish. 

Keep Your Little Fishes Entertained: Splash Zone

For families with little ones, expect to spend a reasonable amount of time at Splash Zone, located on the second floor. Families can enjoy fun activities in this interactive exhibit, such as taking photos inside a giant clam, crawling through rocky tunnels featuring fish tanks, and so much more! Children can learn about playful penguins in the penguin area and see them diving or swimming. There’s also a toddler zone, Coral Babies, and a small playground. Remember to watch your little kids, as it gets busy, and bigger kids tend to overrun the play area. 

Don’t Forget to Eat! (Dining Options at the Aquarium)

Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a sit-down meal, the cafe at the Monterey Bay Aquarium offers sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and more, as well as a kids’ menu. Never once have I enjoyed an over-priced museum meal — until today. Not only were the prices reasonable, but the food was fantastic! The café even has an executive chef, Matthew Beaudin, who has crafted a menu featuring seasonal flavors and sustainable, farm-to-table cuisine. Grab a window seat to enjoy the ocean as you dine on what I know will be a fantastic meal. Even the coffee and pastries were delicious! We were delighted with our corn chowder, baked pretzel, and octopus donut! Note, the café gets extremely busy. Expect a long wait if you plan to dine during peak lunch hours.

Spend Your Seashells at the Aquarium Stores

Of course, no visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium would be complete without a stop at one of the on-site stores. With three locations throughout the aquarium, this is the perfect place to find souvenirs for your little ocean lovers (and big ones, too). You’ll find toys, games, apparel, books, and more – all featuring their favorite aquarium animals. And if you’re looking for something unique, check out the selection of handcrafted jewelry made by local artisans. We were particularly surprised by the vast collection of books and stuffed animals. We had trouble narrowing it down, but in the end, we added a new squid and sea otter to our overflowing collection. 

Pro Tip: Remember to save the gift shop for your very last stop. You won’t have to carry your bags, and encouraging well-behaved kiddos is a good incentive.

Act for the Ocean

As the world’s population continues to grow, so does the pollution and waste we produce. Much of this pollution ends up in our oceans, hurting marine life and affecting the delicate balance of the ecosystem. The Monterey Bay Aquarium aims to address climate change by ending plastic pollution, protecting fragile ecosystems, and improving seafood sustainability. During your visit, explore the biggest threats facing the ocean today, like climate change and plastic pollution, and talk with your kids about how we can take action to protect the ocean for future generations. Try to use less plastic, recycle when possible, and pick up trash when you see it. You can also help by raising awareness about ocean pollution and its effects on marine life. 

Pro Tips for Visiting Monterey Bay Aquarium with Kids

Visiting Monterey Bay Aquarium with kids can be an excellent experience for the whole family. Here are a few tips to help make your visit more enjoyable!

• Monterey can get chilly! Dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes for walking.  
• To maximize your day, plan to arrive before the aquarium opens to allow time for parking, security, and ticket scanning. Use the ocean decks as an opportunity for a midday break.
• While outside snacks are not permitted, we recommend that families bring a reusable water bottle (or two!) for use during the day.
• The Behind the Scenes Tour lets you see what’s behind the aquarium’s world-class exhibits. For availability and reservations, call 831-648-4800 or check in at the Membership and Tours desk when you visit.
• Strollers and wagons are permitted throughout the aquarium, except in the aviary and on the mezzanine of the sea otter exhibit. There are designated stroller parking areas throughout the aquarium.
• If time permits, take a stroll down Cannery Row. With its picturesque charm and colorful history, Cannery Row is one of the most popular vacation destinations on California’s Central Coast.

Monterey bay aquarium.

The world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium is at Cannery Row, and attracts 2 million visitors a year.

The aquarium showcases the rich marine ecosystem off Monterey’s coastline, and captures the sights and sounds of this stunning coastline.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium contributes to the research and conservation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, stretching 276 miles from San Francisco to the Big Sur. 

This is the largest marine sanctuary in the Continental U.S. with underwater kelp forests, a deep sea canyon, tide pools and rocky shorelines.

10 BEST things to do at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

1. Gaze at the the world’s largest aquarium at the Open Sea Exhibit.

This aquarium has a massive 54-foot wide viewing window, and holds 1.2 million gallons of water.

See hammerhead sharks and sea turtles, amongst schools of pacific salmon, dolphin fish and yellowfin tuna.

2. Look up at a 3-story aquarium with a living kelp forest, and observe divers hand feeding sharks and stingrays.

The kelp forest at the Monterey Bay Aquarium grows at the incredible rate of 3 to 5 inches each day.

See leopard sharks, giant sea bass, red octopus , and more.

3. Witness the ethereal form of jellies floating through tanks.

The orange colored  black sea nettle jelly  has tentacles that can reach 25 feet.  They live at great depths in the ocean, and are rarely seen.

The ethereal moon jellies have a stunning, translucent bell, and are made up of 98% water.  

Did you know that jellies don't have brains, bones or teeth?

The lion's mane jelly is the largest jelly in the ocean, and can have up to 1,200 tentacles.  It's tentacles can grow up to 100 feet!

These spotted jellies resemble mushrooms, and thrive in warm, tropical waters.

4. Stand beneath the Circular Aquarium at the entrance to the Open Sea Exhibit, and watch a massive school of salmon swim above your head.

5. Discover the secret world of seahorses.

Seahorses have no stomach, and so need to be fed frequently throughout the day.

6. Stand in the Wave Crash Gallery’s tunnel where a simulated wave crashes overhead every 30 seconds!  

600 gallons of seawater are pumped through the gallery each day.

7.  Lead an underwater mission to the deep sea, and discover mountain ranges and new forms of sea life.

8. See bat rays, starfish and anemones in touch-pools.

9. Learn about the local marine life found in Monterey Bay habitats.

This is the broadnose sevengill shark found in Monterey Bay.  This shark has only one dorsal fin on top, unique because most sharks have two.

10. Visit the cafe or waterfront restaurant at the Monterey Aquarium.

Aquariums provide a soothing experience for many visitors: The dark rooms, lit by soft light emanating from the tanks, display a plethora of fish in all shapes and colors swimming past the glass, with kelp seemingly dancing in the surges of water. People come to these aquatic attractions to be enthralled by all kinds of strange and interesting creatures from various bodies of water and habitats. With this list of top U.S. aquariums, guests can become fully immersed in underwater worlds and enjoy a myriad of unique offerings.

(Note: The following aquariums are all accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The AZA ensures that the aquarium meets minimum standards for animal welfare, care and management.)

Georgia Aquarium: Atlanta

At the massive Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, visitors can get up close and personal with sea life ranging from rays and dolphins to sea lions and penguins. With one of the aquarium's animal encounter experiences such as a shark cage dive or a behind-the-scenes dolphin training session, guests can get face-to-face with some of these fascinating creatures. The program focuses on conservation education and fostering positive connections between humans and animals.

A favorite of recent aquarium visitors is the Ocean Voyager exhibit with its 100-foot-long underwater walk-through tunnel and more than 50 species. Travelers recommend that you arrive early in the day on weekends and at other busy times.

Monterey Bay Aquarium: Monterey, California

The Monterey Bay Aquarium not only showcases flora and fauna found in waters near and far, but the institution is also committed to protecting California's ocean and inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders. A visit includes viewing aquatic plants and animals and even some creatures that live on land: You can see African penguins, jellyfish, sea otters, starfish, tufted puffins and much more.

While at the Monterey Bay Aquarium , attend a sea otter or penguin feeding, take a behind-the-scenes tour, or stay for lunch at the cafe. Visitors can also explore the myriad exhibits, such as the 28-foot-tall Kelp Forest – one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the world – or Into the Deep with its transparent glowing jellyfish. Many guests point to the jellyfish exhibit as what they enjoyed most, but some warn that the aquarium can get quite crowded. If you can't make it in person, you can always visit the website to watch animals on the aquarium's live webcams.

National Aquarium: Baltimore

Shedd Aquarium: Chicago

With a mission of promoting compassion for animals and conservation efforts, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago offers memorable experiences that include touch tanks; multisensory 4D; interactions with beluga whales, sea otters, penguins and stingrays; and many more offerings. You can even help feed sharks.

At the Abbott Oceanarium, guests can watch Pacific white-sided dolphins leap 20 feet into the air and speed across the water at up to 25 mph. The kid-friendly Polar Play Zone allows children to learn about life on the North and South poles by donning a penguin suit, riding in a kid-sized submarine and admiring the underwater viewing area. Shedd Aquarium also offers summertime kayaking outings on the Chicago River for those interested in a conservation ecotour. Back at the aquarium, other activities include a virtual reality swim with humpback whales in Tonga.

Tennessee Aquarium: Chattanooga, Tennessee

With thousands of animals, such as the macaroni penguin, sand tiger shark, alligator snapping turtle, hellbender and giant Japanese spider crab, the Tennessee Aquarium is unsurprisingly one of the top-rated aquariums in the U.S. Patrons say this aquarium, which is divided into two separate buildings for freshwater and ocean exhibits, impresses on every visit.

The River Journey exhibit features a turtle gallery, an Appalachian cove forest habitat, River Giants and more. In the Ocean Journey exhibit, you'll find a butterfly garden, a tropical cove habitat and Boneless Beauties, among other highlights. For maximum aquatic entertainment, head to the IMAX 3D Theater for an immersive movie, attend an event or get involved at the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute, which focuses on research, restoration and education.

Adventure Aquarium: Camden, New Jersey

The Adventure Aquarium, located on New Jersey's Camden Waterfront just across the river from Philadelphia, ranks among the nation's top aquariums. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2022, the aquarium is home to more than 15,000 animals throughout 2 million gallons of water and has the largest collection of sharks in the Northeast. The Shark Realm exhibit offers unique ways to see the sharks: From above, you can cross the Shark Bridge (the longest of its kind at 81 feet), or walk through the 40-foot-long Shark Tunnel to see them from below.

Children will especially enjoy the KidZone touch pools, where young guests can get hands-on with a variety of invertebrates, as well as the Penguin Park outdoor playground. The Adventure Aquarium also boasts a multisensory Piranha Falls exhibit, a 3D theater and a unique Hippo Haven exhibit for observing these 3,000-pound mammals from above and below. As aquarium capacity is limited, you're advised to make a reservation online before your visit.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography: La Jolla, California

As part of the University of California, San Diego , the Birch Aquarium is a museum that highlights research by scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It is home to more than 60 habitats of marine life through galleries that highlight the world's smallest penguins, seahorses, a kelp forest, sharks and more.

Get an up-close look into the research being conducted through an experimental coral reef exhibit, complete with underwater robotics and prototype digital cameras, or "Expedition at Sea: R/V Sally Ride Gallery," which offers a look at life aboard a research vessel. The touch tanks in Tide Pool Plaza imitate tide pools along San Diego's coastline and are teeming with life such as sea stars, sea anemones, hermit crabs, sea cucumbers and lobsters. Even though this aquarium is not as large as others, families compliment it as great for children and adults alike. Birch Aquarium requires advance reservations to visit.

Seattle Aquarium: Seattle

Learn about Puget Sound and the ocean at large through Seattle Aquarium 's exhibits, events, conservation and education programs, research activities, and more. Guests can see a variety of birds, mammals, fish, cephalopods, plankton and other invertebrates through its exhibits.

OdySea Aquarium: Scottsdale, Arizona

OdySea Aquarium, located on the boundary of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, is a multilevel, state-of-the-art facility with 65 exhibits and 370 species. The aquarium features a dozen galleries and a number of unique experiences, such as penguin and sloth encounters. OdySea is also home to a unique Russian sturgeon touch exhibit.

Past visitors raved about the Voyager, billed as the world's only revolving aquarium experience: Guests sit in stadium-style seats that rotate past four 46-foot windows showing sharks, sea turtles, groupers, stingrays and sea lions during a narrated tour. Some visitors did say they felt the general admission was too expensive. Be sure to check out the bathrooms at OdySea – the mirrors above the sinks have been replaced with windows into the aquarium's shark exhibit.

Aquarium of the Pacific: Long Beach, California

Explore galleries that feature habitats from the tropical Pacific Ocean, northern Pacific and Southern California/Baja at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. As Southern California's largest aquarium, it has more than 12,000 animals and 100 exhibits highlighting aquatic life in the Pacific Ocean.

The new and impressive Pacific Visions building offers guests an interactive experience through film, art and technology. In the Lorikeet Forest aviary, colorful birds will perch on your shoulder (or maybe even your head) to get a hand-fed treat. See what it's like to be an aquatic vet at the Molina Animal Care Facility, then learn where our water comes from and how to preserve it at the Our Water Future exhibit. Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies: Gatlinburg, Tennessee

New England Aquarium: Boston

The New England Aquarium in Boston strives to engage and educate the public through its displays of awe-inspiring animals. The aquarium is committed to ocean exploration and conservation through nearly a dozen initiatives that range from saving the sea turtles to reducing single-use plastic.

Visitors to this attraction can wander through exhibits such as an Indo-Pacific coral reef habitat and one spotlighting Atlantic harbor seals. The New England Aquarium also houses an open-air exhibit space for seal and sea lion training, the four-story Giant Ocean Tank, and the Simons Theatre with its five-story-tall movie screen. Oregon Coast Aquarium: Newport, Oregon

Oregon's majestic coastal creatures await you at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. There are three underwater walkways that provide spectacular views of sea life living among reefs, flats and in the open ocean. The Shark Tunnel, for example, showcases four species of sharks, schools of fish and big bat rays.

To get friendly with the animals, attend an animal encounter with a sea jelly or octopus, or get a behind-the-scenes tour to learn more about animal care. In addition to seeing marine mammals and other sea creatures, you can explore the aviary to get to know seabirds such as puffins. The property also includes a nature-themed playground for children. For those who want to learn more about the environment and our effect on it, the aquarium hosts citizen science projects in partnership with other organizations that the general public can participate in.

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay: Las Vegas

When you think of Las Vegas, an aquarium is probably not the first thing that pops into your mind, but the Shark Reef Aquarium at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino is well worth a visit. There are more than 2,000 animals at this aquarium, including jellyfish, sharks, sea turtles, piranhas and even crocodiles.

Advanced purchase of a timed ticket is required for entry. For an additional fee, guests can touch and feed stingrays or feed a zebra shark. For an immersive digital experience, try out the Undersea Explore VR Theater. Its 360-degree, 3D virtual reality headsets and motion seats let guests feel what it's like to swim alongside humpback whales or dive with tiger sharks.

Mystic Aquarium: Mystic, Connecticut

With this aquarium housing more than 300 species, visitors can marvel at African penguins, beluga whales, giant Pacific octopuses, spotted seals, a live coral reef ecosystem and much more. In the indoor exhibit gallery, watch eels, tangs and a variety of other fish swim around a 35,000-gallon tank. Head to the Ocean Solutions gallery to learn about innovative ways the ocean can help with the climate crisis, then go on a virtual underwater interactive journey to the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. Recent visitors say Mystic Aquarium is a fun and educational place to visit, and that the size makes it easy to explore in a few hours.

Advance tickets are strongly recommended. For a one-of-a-kind painting experience, guests can book a time to paint with one of the aquarium's resident seals or sea lions (for an additional fee). There's also penguin, reptile and jellyfish encounters, as well as programs where you experience what it's like to be a trainer or marine biologist. Dinosaur fans will want to add the new "DinoSeas: An Immersive Journey" experience for the two 4D movies, animatronic undersea dinosaurs and sea creatures, and more.

Food & drink, top 5 places to spot sea otters in monterey.

If there is one furry animal that Monterey Bay is most known for, it is the sea otter. The climate and rocky shores along Monterey County's coastline are ideal for these critters, and the bountiful kelp forests are full of all of their favorite snacks. Here's our list of the top five places to spot Monterey County's favorite mascot.

1. Moss Landing

Moss Landing State Beach and the Elkhorn Slough in Moss Landing are almost always a sure bet to see these cuddly creatures. There is a protected cove in particular near the dunes on Moss Landing State Beach, where you can often find groups of bachelor otters huddled together in "rafts." A raft is a group of single sex sea otters, and they typically contain 2 to 100 of the furry little creatures! Otters in rafts often sleep side-by-side, wrapped up in strands of kelp, so that they don't drift far from each other.

2. Fisherman's Wharf

Dine at one of the fabulous seafood restaurants along Old Fisherman's Wharf , and you might just spot an otter or two swimming beneath you. Sea otters also find this area as a great place to socialize, play and feed on fresh seafood, including clams, mussels, crab, squid, and urchins.

Visitors can also catch a glass bottom boat or whale watching tour from the wharf for an ocean excursion where sea otter sightings are always a possibility.

3. Cannery Row

Take a walk along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail from Fisherman's Wharf to Cannery Row and keep your eyes open for sea otters twisting and turning near the shoreline; this is also a hot spot for lazy harbor seals.

Further down Cannery Row is A Taste of Monterey . This place offers incredible views of the Monterey Bay, and most of the time, you get to catch a glimpse of an otter in the ocean below; if not, the Monterey Bay Aquarium just down the street is a sure bet! 

4. Lovers Point Park and Beach

Want to get a closer look? Rent a kayak or stand up paddle board from Adventures by the Sea at Lovers Point and search for otters, seals, and other marine animals. But please keep your distance and respect their space.

5. Point Lobos State Reserve

Bonus monterey bay aquarium.

If all else fails, you can always stop in at the Monterey Bay Aquarium where you are guaranteed to see a handful of friendly sea otters. The two-story exhibit shows sea otters romp, tumble and wrestle above and below water. Be sure to check the daily schedule beforehand to view the sea otter feeding times held at various times throughout the day. Review Sea Otter Cam  at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Celebrating Birch Aquarium’s Volunteers!

It’s National Volunteer Week and here at Birch Aquarium, we have an amazing and passionate crew of more than 300 volunteers who bring their time and talents to the aquarium every single week of the year. Each of our volunteers is a valuable member of our team, with their unique skills and perspectives that help us reach the hundreds of thousands of guests we welcome each year. Whether they are guiding guests through exhibits, helping with special events, assisting behind the scenes, or any of the myriad other roles they play, it’s safe to say Birch Aquarium would not be the same without them. Let’s get to know a few of our amazing volunteers!

Daniel Ricardo Melo

Time Volunteering:  since November

Favorite Animal:  Weedy Seadragons

Tell us about yourself? 

My name is Daniel Melo and my favorite color is yellow. I discovered my love of aquarist work in high school and strive for such a position in the future. I graduated from California State University Monterey Bay with a Bachelors in Marine Science so I'd like to think I'm pretty well rounded in terms of ocean knowledge. I also enjoy cherry flavored candies and sunny rainy days.

Why do you volunteer? What do you love most about volunteering?

I started volunteering to gain experience working in an environment similar to the occupation I want in the future. I love helping our guests overcome their "urchin fears" and getting to explore alongside them within our tide pool area since every day there's something new or different hanging around.

What is something you've learned by volunteering here?

I learn something new every day while volunteering at the aquarium! For instance, did you know that the longest horn shark migration was about nine miles or that urchins create those iconic divots within the tide pool rocks? Another one of my favorite fun facts is that sea stars have tiny pincers on their top side that help keep them clean and can even cut hair!

Why would you recommend volunteering here to someone?

If you have a passion for marine life and oceanography, or simply enjoy the water and views, I would highly recommend volunteering. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about our local and non-local marine species, meet new people, and experience Birch Aquarium from a different perspective. Personally, it has really helped me with my public speaking fears. I rarely meet the same guest twice so it helps me step out of my comfort zone to start conversations and practice speaking loudly to a large audience.

Shelley Bakalis

Time Volunteering :  30 years

Favorite Animal :  Seahorses

Since I was pretty young, I knew I wanted to be a Marine Biologist – thanks to Jaques Cousteau – and eventually moved to San Diego to work at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. I am also very much into dog training and competing in many dog sports. For 45 years I've also been involved with boating education through US Power Squadron, and I like to grow my own fruit and veggies.

The Marine Biologist in me loves to help take care of our residents, and I love passing on knowledge to our visitors!

I've always had a deep connection to the ocean, even when I didn't live near it. Volunteering at the aquarium has taught me that so many others feel the same.

Besides the fun and the best office view anywhere, helping to conserve species and educate visitors. And, without trying to sound too pretentious, it feels like a higher calling.

Time Volunteering:   7.5 years

Favorite Animal:   Loggerhead Sea Turtle & Little Blue Penguins

Tell us about yourself?

In addition to volunteering at Birch Aquarium, I practice photography. I visit several different locations around San Diego County and beyond to photograph anything that might look pleasing on Instagram and other photo-sharing sites. I also take pictures as a volunteer for the San Diego International Film Festival.  

I volunteer at Birch Aquarium because I love exploring what this place has to offer and then extending that knowledge to our guests – for example, when we have different feeding presentations and locations for the various sea creatures. What I love most about volunteering is telling our guests where they can watch some of our feeding presentations, especially if they  are interested in a specific animal. 

One thing I learned by volunteering here is the way fishes, sharks, penguins, seahorses, seadragons and other sea creatures really live and thrive in the water. I also learned that I can influence people to refrain from doing harmful things that would affect the sea creatures' way of life – for example, not throwing plastic and other sorts of garbage in the river.

I would recommend volunteering here because any person – especially those interested in the ocean and environment – will learn more about sea creatures and how they live. Also, insights on how plastic waste in the water can affect the living conditions for all sorts of creatures. 

Ask a volunteer!

April is earth month and birch aquarium is celebrating sustainability and simple ways we can all make a difference. what are some sustainable strategies you already practice in your daily life.

Daniel:   Separating trash and using reusable bags. It has become a habit to separate recycling from trash and to have a tote or other reusable bag on standby. I usually keep a bag in the trunk of my car just in case.

Shelley:  Besides the obvious recycling and water conservation, I try to instill in others the need for all of us here now to be more mindful of the damage we are doing and our obligations to future generations.

Ryan:   Some sustainable strategies I'm currently practicing would involve throwing any sorts of food waste in the compost (green) bin, recycling packaging made of cardboard or paper in the recycling bin, applying used coffee grounds to the garden and bringing reusable bags for shopping purposes to refrain from reliance on plastic bags.

Prescott Grant Program Awards FY 2023

For fiscal year 2023, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) awarded 17 competitive Prescott Grants totaling $2.162 million to 15 conservation organizations and state agencies. The Prescott Grant Program helps foster the Service's relationship with partners who are closest to the resources (e.g., state agencies, Tribes, local communities, aquaria, researchers, and authorized rescue and rehabilitation networks) by providing needed support for their response efforts.
