Plus Size Swimsuits & Coverups

It’s worth bringing at least two swim suits and cover ups on a week long Caribbean cruise. There’s nothing worse than having to put on a soggy swimsuit! You can also use the print kimono above as a cover up or wear shorts over your swim suit bottoms when getting on and off the ship.

Accessories:

Pick colors that match all your outfits when choosing your accessories. A lightweight scarf is perfect for cruising. It keeps the sun off your shoulders and can cover up the tops of your arms if you feel self conscious in sleeveless vests or dresses. Likewise a pashmina is great for covering your arms in the evening.

Black clutch (optional)

We like these Croc sandals instead of flip flops. They are more supportive and comfortable. They’re great for the beach or pool and very lightweight and packable. Lightweight sneakers like these Sketchers Go Walk shoes are perfect for travel as they’re lightweight and packable. They’re great at the airport and port before your cruise and on excursions. If you don’t plan on getting really dressed up on formal night, you can leave out the heels and just wear wedge sandals and a maxi dress.

If black heels don’t go with your formal night outfits, choose nude and switch to a gold purse.

43 Amazing Plus Size Cruise Outfits That Will Elevate Your Appearance

While packing for a cruise , every cruiser’s dream is to get the perfect outfits for their voyage. Plus-size women often find it challenging to get dresses that enhance comfort and confidence.

I know curvy women hate tight dresses because they restrict movement and physical comfort.

By the way, cruises nowadays are so huge and you have to cover substantial distances on foot to get to the dining hall. That’s why it’s crucial to always look for plus-size cruise outfits for easy movement.

Who Am I? I’m Zoe Grace, a cruise lover who has taken many voyages since childhood. Three months ago, I was shopping for my aunty, a curvy lady, and my eyes popped out after seeing a huge variety of plus-size outfits on Amazon.

We snagged nearly six plus-size dresses from there, and my aunt was over the moon with them. But you know what? I stumbled upon many fantastic curvy fashion ideas that I think you’d love, too.

I’m excited to write this cruise outfit guide, and I bet you will also thank me at the end.

What To Consider Before Buying a Plus Size Cruise Outfit?

plus size cruise outfit

Everyone wants comfortable, breathable cruise clothes that offer ease and unrestricted movement.

But there are many more things to consider while buying a plus-size cruise outfit.

First, you must consider where you’re sailing to. Like for tropical regions, you must always opt for breathable clothes like maxi dresses, tunics, wide-leg pants, jumpsuits, wide tops, etc.

And you should always look for fashionable wear; so many summer cruise attires are available on Amazon. If you’re traveling to the Caribbean Islands , don’t forget to pack a few swimsuits and beach essentials.

However, if you plan to hop on the Alaskan cruise, pack a few layers and extra tops to protect your body. Good to know that you will easily find many layering options and plus-size jackets.

One tip from my end is don’t sacrifice your fashion over comfort. I know finding the perfect plus-size outfit can be tricky, but honestly, a wide array of choices are just waiting for you.

And lastly, always look for versatile outfits that you can use for various activities. You don’t need to buy one separate bundle of dresses for dining and another for special nights. So always do packing without breaking the bank account.

What Type of Cruise Outfit Does a Plus-Size Woman Need?

Whether you’re mapping out a voyage on a 5-day cruise or 14-day cruise, you have to consider bathing suits, tops, evening wear, formal outfits, rompers, swimsuits, and some other plus-size accessories.

So it’s not all about shopping for 3 or 4 dresses for a special night; the journey starts from the embarkation day till your last cruise day. During that journey, there will be many more outdoor fun, port excursions, water activities, special occasions, parties, and more. So you have to consider all these occasions while shopping for plus-size wear for your cruise .

What To Wear On Formal Nights?

formal night plus size cruise dress

On nearly every cruise, there’s this special evening they call “ Elegant Night ,” or some cruise lines prefer to term it a “Special Night” or a “Theme Night.” It’s the perfect opportunity to flaunt your style and show off your best outfits.

Folks love dressing up for these theme nights—it’s the one time you can let your fancy side shine. The outfit makes a difference during these moments. For plus-size women, finding the right suit for special nights is a bit challenging.

The maxi and sundress are easily available in plus sizes, but you need to be a savvy shopper when it comes to plus-size formal dresses.

Last time, my aunt and I spent hours on various online platforms to get a few amazing formal dresses. We sifted through many chic and funky casual dresses, but here’s the kicker – most didn’t come in plus sizes. After what felt like forever, we finally found something worth wearing for those theme nights.

I’m a fashionista, and I take special nights more seriously; that’s why I usually pack at least 2 formal dresses for the special nights.

In the end, formal dresses are not only for elegant nights but wearing them in a dining hall is another big plus. Many formal events are hosted onboard, like Captain’s Night, pool parties, deck barbecues, live music, dance parties, and more. So it’s better to always pack 2 – 3 plus-size formal outfits for your 14-day cruise voyage.

Plus Size Formal Dresses For Formal Night And Special Dining

Just picture yourself in this stunning dress, walking into the dining hall. It comes in different colors, but pink is my absolute favorite.

6- Boho Floral Maxi Formal Dress

The pring of this dress is what makes it so special for me, and the flounce sleeve matches perfectly with the floral print. The top portion is stretchable and fits perfectly on the shoulders. Other Plus Size Cruise Outfits That You Must Pack

Now, apart from formal dresses and some basic cruise plus size outfits, there are a few other essential outfits that you must pack along to elevate your style.

1- SwimWears

Hangin’ by the pool on a cruise, soaking up the sun—it’s everyone’s dream. But let’s be real; the key is rocking a comfy swimsuit on that pool lounger.

I just love kickin’ it by the pool, breathing in that salty sea breeze, vibing to some chill tunes. But if your outfit isn’t comfy, it’s a total buzzkill. I often prefer High-Waisted Bottoms swimwear for curvy ladies as they offer extra coverage around the tummy area.

Here are the three best plus-size swimsuits that you can pack for your cruise voyage.

1- Plus Size Bikini Curvy Bathing Suit

plus size cruise outfit ideas

This gorgeous swimsuit is perfect for plus-size ladies. The ruffles add charm and elegance. Because of the push-up drawstring, this swimsuit is totally customizable, and you can adjust it according to your comfort. I feel very comfortable with the elastic bottoms that have solid tummy control.

2- Tankini Two Piece Swimdress

plus size cruise outfit ideas

This flowy swimsuit works wonders for that slim look. Adjustable shoulders and a push-up bra for the perfect shape. Rock it on scorching summer days, chilling on the deck, soaking up the sun.

3-  Tankini Floral Print Swimsuit

plus size cruise outfit ideas

If you love swimsuits that offer great coverage, go for this 2 piece floral print suit. It’s easy to put on and too comfortable. I like this swimwear, as I feel a little shy in two-piece suits, but this one is a real game changer that radiated my confidence.

Plus Size Tank Tops And Short Sleeves

Not a single woman can live without tank tops and shorts. Especially if you’re sailing towards the Caribbean Islands, you have to pack a few beach suits and tank tops to beat the heat. Here are some cute beach dresses you must pack for shore excursions and beach activities.

1- Stripe Bikini Long Coverups

plus size cruise outfit ideas

If you have the two-piece swimsuit and feel shy, don’t worry; just get this cute stripe coverup to boost your confidence. This beachwear is made of polyester that feels so soft on your skin. You can wear this coverup alongside the pool or on the beach. The adjustable strap on the waist ensures easy closures.

2- Hollow Out Cover Up

3- Tropical Belted Short Dress

4- Striped Print Short Sleeve Line Dress

plus size cruise outfit ideas

You can wear this loose dress as a coverup on beaches; it is so easy to throw on and a good choice for those who don’t like to explore their bold cuts. Sleeves are breathable, making them a great dress for hot summer days.

5- Tunic Tank Top

plus size cruise outfit ideas

Don’t forget to pack attest 2 or 3 tank tops for your cruise. This sleeveless henley top is so vibrant and catches the eye of every individual. I love its button-down design that allows you to hide your boobs. This tank top is the best to wear on casual sunny days on a cruise. Or you can also dress it up for shore excursions.

6- Casual Loose Tunic T-Shirt

plus size cruise outfit ideas

This is a fancy T-shirt, and it feels so lightweight on the body. It features loose cuts, which is best for hiding your belly. You can wear pants, shorts, leggings or skirts this summer too.

The Plus Size Shorts And Trousers

If you’re planning a voyage toward a tropical climate, don’t forget to pack a few pairs of shorts, trousers, or wide-leg pants. Thankfully, there is a diverse collection of plus-size trousers and shorts available.

Here are some of my favorite shorts ideas that you can choose from.

1- Ripped Folded Hem Jeans Shorts

plus size cruise outfit ideas

Every plus-size woman’s dream is to get a short that offers comfort and flexibility. You can easily move and walk across the entire cruise with these ripped, folded jeans. For casual daytime activities, these shorts are the perfect option. You can wear tank tops, crop tops, or simple off-shoulder tops with these shorts.

2- Colorful Cotton Linen Shirt and Drawstring Shorts

plus size cruise outfit ideas

I love cotton shirts with shorts, and it’s even better when they rock the same color. Matching vibes make the combo pop, you know? This outfit looks super cool with plus-size women; the collared shirt makes you look sophisticated. Unlike the other shorts, this one has an adjustable waist rope so you can adjust it according to your tummy’s comfort.

3- Wide Leg Pants

plus size cruise outfit ideas

If you want to feel more comfortable and confident, just go for these wide-leg pants. These pants look so cute with any casual half-sleeve top. Two pockets on either side let you hold your essentials. It’s available in many colors, but I love the sea green.

4- Loose Capri Pants

plus size cruise outfit ideas

I’ve been wearing capris for a long time. They feel incredibly cozy. This loose capri pants offers a chic and versatile look for women. Further, the cropped length showcases ankles, providing a flattering silhouette. This capri is a great option for warm and tropical regions.

5- Flared Capri Pants

plus size cruise outfit ideas

This flared capri pant is perfect for cruising, offering a breeze and a stylish look. The wide-leg design provides comfort and a relaxed vibe, ideal for strolls or lounging on deck.

6- Printed Palazzo Pants

plus size cruise outfit ideas

As a plus size option, these printed palazzo pants combine style and comfort seamlessly. Start your day with these versatile pants, perfect for morning yoga on the balcony, ensuring a chic and relaxed cruise experience.

Choosing The Perfect Plus Size Cruise Outfits

I always wonder how to rock plus-size outfits. Here’s a hack—go for matching vibes! Got a light blue maxi dress? Grab white sandals, a black shade, a hat, and a cute white clutch!

Similarly, matching accessories can even elevate your look. Don’t forget to add statement jewelry, scarves, and a nice hat to personalize your look.

If you’re a plus size lady, the elegant floral printed dresses seem ideal attire. Darker shades can be slimming, but don’t shy away from bold patterns that express your personality. But still, you’re the master of your own destiny, so you have the freedom to choose the best color.

Next, comfort is the main key. Always go for breathable, loose outfits that let you stroll comfortably on the cruise. Tight clothes seem wired with curvy ladies as it would highlight your curves.

Always choose an outfit that boosts your confidence. I always wear a dress that makes me happy, so whenever I wear it on a cruise, I feel pleasure, giving me more confidence.

Versatility is another factor I have mentioned; always go for dresses that can be mixed and matched easily. In this way, you can change the style every time with fewer pieces.

Choose Cruise Outfits According To Weather Conditions

Before packing for my cruise voyage, I often check the weather for the next 14 days on my phone and pack outfits accordingly.

Packing is tedious for me; to make it simple, I always pack necessary items. You don’t need to pack heavy, so first check the weather conditions of your destination and then pack some light stuff accordingly.

Packing For Alaskan Cruise

Packing for the Alaskan cruise is a bit heavy as you have to pack extra layers and a jacket. The climate usually remains cold throughout the year, but if you’re sailing to Alaska in the months of June and August, the temperature is around 19 °C to 22°C.

So here are some essential plus-size outfits that you must pack for the Alaskan cruise.

  • Layers to protect your body from cold temperatures.
  • Warm jackets for a cozy experience.
  • Warm shoes for comfortable walking.
  • Instead of half sleeves, go for full-sleeved shirts.
  • Don’t forget to pack raincoats.

Packing For Caribbean Cruise

I love Caribbean adventures because you must pack very little for a cruise. Due to the warm climate, you need to pack lightweight, breezy, and breathable clothes.

  • Breathable maxi dress.
  • Shorts, top-ups, and capris.
  • Sleeveless blouse or tops.
  • Don’t forget to pack some beachwear and swimsuits.
  • For formal events, go for cocktail dresses.

Packing For Mediterranean Cruise

Mediterranean cruises are a little longer than Caribbean cruises, so I always pack some extra outfits; this also helps you avoid laundry charges. Here are some necessary outfits that you can pack for the Mediterranean cruise.

  • Flowy sundresses
  • Linen shorts or capris with a comfortable tank top or half-sleeve shirt.
  • Elegant blouse or button-down shirt.
  • Wrap dresses or cocktail dresses for formal nights.

Understanding Cruise Dress Codes

Embarking on an all-inclusive cruise is not just about the destinations you’ll visit but also about the experience aboard the ship.

A big part of this experience is dressing for the occasion. Cruise lines often have specific dress codes for different times of the day and events, making it crucial to pack accordingly.

This section will help you navigate the waters of cruise dress codes, ensuring you feel both comfortable and stylish throughout your journey.

Plus Size Cruise Outfits

Casual Wear: Daytime Attire

During the day, most cruises are quite casual, especially when you’re on the ship. However, “casual” can vary slightly from line to line, so it’s good to be prepared.

  • Tops: Loose, breathable tops or T-shirts . Think comfort combined with a touch of style.
  • Bottoms: Shorts, skirts, or lightweight pants. Opt for fabrics that offer breathability and movement.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes for exploring the ship or ports. Sandals or sneakers are perfect.
  • Pro Tip: Even in casual settings, some cruise lines request that swimwear be covered when not by the pool.

Smart Casual: Evening Wear

As the sun sets, the dress code on many cruises shifts to smart casual, especially in dining areas and some bars or lounges.

  • Women : Dresses or blouses paired with skirts or trousers. Jumpsuits are also a chic option.
  • Men: Polo shirts or button-downs with trousers or nice jeans.
  • Accessories: This is the time to add a little sparkle or a statement piece to your outfit, like a bold necklace or a stylish watch.

Formal Nights: Dressing Up

Most cruises will have at least one formal night , though the definition of “formal” can vary. This is your chance to shine and dress up more than you would for smart casual.

  • Women: Cocktail dresses , evening gowns, or dressy pant suits. Plus size options abound, offering both style and comfort.
  • Men: A suit and tie or a tuxedo for those who want to go all out.
  • Footwear: Dress shoes or elegant sandals. Comfort is key, so look for options that offer support and style.
  • Pro Tip: Don’t shy away from renting a formal outfit if you don’t want to pack bulky items. Some cruise lines offer this service.

Understanding Your Cruise Line’s Specific Code

It’s vital to check your specific cruise line’s dress code as they can differ. Here are some quick tips:

  • Review Your Cruise Documents: Most lines provide detailed dress code information in your pre-cruise documents .
  • When in Doubt, Overdress: It’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed, especially for evening events.
  • Consider the Destination: For cruises to colder regions, layering your outfits can be both a stylish and practical choice.

Plus Size Cruise Outfits

Essential Plus Size Cruise Outfits

Embarking on a cruise means navigating through a sea of activities and events, each with its own dress code and vibe.

Whether you’re lounging on the deck, exploring exotic locales, or dining under the stars, having the right outfits is key to enjoying your journey to the fullest.

Here, we break down the must-have plus size cruise outfits that blend comfort, style, and versatility.

Daywear Essentials

Comfort and Style for Daytime Adventures

  • Breathable Fabrics: Opt for lightweight, airy materials like cotton, linen, or bamboo to stay cool and comfortable in tropical climates.
  • Layering Pieces: A light cardigan or a stylish kimono can be perfect for cooler mornings or overly air-conditioned interiors.
  • Versatile Bottoms: Pack a mix of shorts, skirts, and comfortable trousers that can easily transition from day to night with the right accessories.
  • Statement Tops: Look for tops with fun prints, bright colors, or elegant details to add a pop of personality to your daytime looks.
  • Practical Footwear: Comfortable sneakers or walking sandals are a must for excursions. Consider water-resistant materials for beach days.

Evening Wear Essentials

Elevating Nights with Elegance and Comfort

  • Formal Attire: For gala nights, choose a flowing gown or a tailored suit that makes you feel confident. Darker colors tend to offer a slimming effect, but don’t shy away from bold prints or embellishments that reflect your personal style.
  • Smart Casual Options: Mix and match tailored pants with chic blouses or opt for a sophisticated midi dress. These are perfect for most evenings on board.
  • Accessorizing: Elevate your evening outfits with jewelry, a stylish clutch, and a pair of comfortable yet elegant shoes. Block heels or embellished flats are great choices.

Swimwear and Beachwear

Making a Splash in Style

  • Flattering Swimwear: Look for swimsuits with supportive features, such as underwire cups or ruched fabrics. Tankinis, high-waisted bikinis, and one-pieces with bold patterns or strategic cutouts can offer both style and comfort.
  • Cover-Ups: A breezy kaftan, a sarong, or a chic sun dress not only offers coverage but also transitions seamlessly from the pool to the café.
  • Sun Protection: Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protection sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun’s rays in style.

Activewear and Excursion Outfits

Ready for Adventure

  • Durable Activewear: Select pieces that wick away moisture and allow your skin to breathe. Consider items with built-in UV protection for outdoor activities.
  • Appropriate Footwear: Depending on your excursions, you might need sturdy hiking shoes, comfortable walking shoes, or water shoes.
  • Accessories for Convenience: A lightweight backpack or fanny pack can keep your essentials secure and hands-free during adventures.

Creating a cruise wardrobe that is both functional and fashionable can enhance your experience, making you feel prepared and confident for every activity.

Remember, the key to plus size cruise wear is choosing pieces that reflect your personal style while offering comfort and versatility.

With these essentials, you’ll be ready to enjoy your cruise to the fullest, from sunrise to sunset and beyond.

Plus Size Cruise Outfits

Embarking on a cruise adventure means ample opportunities to bask in the sun, whether you’re lounging by the pool or exploring tropical beaches.

The right swimwear and beachwear not only ensure comfort but also boost confidence as you enjoy these moments.

Here’s how to navigate the vast sea of plus size swimwear and beachwear options for your next cruise.

Finding the Perfect Swimwear

Confidence in the Water

  • Supportive Swimwear: Look for swimsuits with features that offer support and enhance your shape, such as underwire bras, adjustable straps, and tummy control panels.
  • Styles That Suit You: Whether it’s a tankini, a high-waisted bikini, or a one-piece, choose a style that you feel great wearing. Bold patterns, vibrant colors, and strategic cutouts can highlight your best features.
  • Quality Fabrics: Opt for chlorine-resistant and UV-protective fabrics to keep your swimwear looking new after many dips in the pool and exposure to the sun.

Cover-Ups and Beachwear

Stylish Protection and Comfort

  • Versatile Cover-Ups: A lightweight kaftan or a wrap dress is not only practical for sun protection but also transitions effortlessly to a casual lunch or a walk along the deck.
  • Beach Dresses: Choose breathable, quick-drying fabrics in styles that flatter your figure. A-line and empire waist dresses are comfortable and stylish options.
  • Accessorize Wisely: Complete your beach look with a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses, and a durable beach bag to carry your essentials. A statement necklace or a pair of earrings can instantly elevate your beachwear.

Sun Protection Essentials

Safeguarding Your Skin

  • UPF Clothing: For extra protection against the sun, consider garments made with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) materials. These can be especially useful for extended periods outdoors.
  • Sunscreen: An obvious must-have. Choose a high-SPF, water-resistant sunscreen to protect exposed skin. Reapply regularly, especially after swimming.
  • Footwear: Protect your feet from hot sands and pool decks with water-friendly sandals or flip-flops.

Tips for Swimwear Shopping

Finding Your Best Fit

  • Try Different Styles: Don’t limit yourself to one type of swimwear. Experimenting with different cuts and styles can help you find what looks and feels best.
  • Consider Online Retailers: Many online stores offer a wide range of plus size swimwear options. Look for retailers with favorable return policies, so you can try on swimwear in the comfort of your home.
  • Read Reviews: Product reviews can provide valuable insights into the fit, quality, and durability of swimwear, helping you make informed decisions.

Swimwear and beachwear are essential components of your cruise wardrobe, offering both function and fashion as you enjoy the sun and sea.

Embrace styles that make you feel confident and comfortable, and don’t forget to prioritize sun protection. With the right pieces, you’re all set for a memorable and enjoyable cruise experience.

Plus Size Cruise Outfits

When you’re setting off on a cruise, your adventure isn’t limited to the ship itself. Excursions and on-board activities call for outfits that are not only stylish but also functional and comfortable.

The right activewear and excursion gear can make all the difference, allowing you to fully enjoy every hike, city tour, and onboard activity. Here’s how to pack smartly for these adventures.

Functional Yet Stylish Activewear

Comfort Meets Performance

  • Breathable Fabrics: Choose materials that wick away moisture and allow your skin to breathe, keeping you cool and comfortable during physical activities.
  • Stretchable and Durable: Outfits with a bit of stretch facilitate movement and are durable enough to withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures.
  • Layering for Versatility: Weather can be unpredictable. Pack lightweight, easy-to-carry layers like a zip-up fleece or a waterproof jacket for cooler temperatures or unexpected rain.

Excursion Outfits

Ready for Every Adventure

  • Versatile Bottoms: Lightweight, quick-drying pants or shorts are ideal for excursions. Look for options with pockets for added convenience.
  • Protective Tops: Long-sleeved shirts with UPF protection can shield your skin from the sun during extended outdoor activities.
  • Comfortable Footwear: The right shoes are crucial. Depending on the nature of your excursions, pack hiking shoes, comfortable walking shoes, or water shoes. Ensure they’re well-broken-in to avoid blisters.

Accessories for Comfort and Convenience

Enhancing Your Outfit and Experience

  • Hats and Sunglasses: A hat with a wide brim and sunglasses with UV protection are must-haves to protect against sun exposure.
  • Backpacks and Fanny Packs: A lightweight, durable backpack or fanny pack is essential for carrying water, snacks, sunscreen, and other necessities hands-free.
  • Water Bottles: Stay hydrated with a reusable water bottle, especially one that can keep your drink cold in hot climates.

Tips for Choosing Activewear and Excursion Gear

Maximizing Comfort and Functionality

  • Try Before You Travel: Wear your activewear and shoes on a few short walks or hikes to ensure they’re comfortable for longer excursions.
  • Consider the Activities: Tailor your gear to the activities you plan to participate in. Water-resistant clothing is a boon for water-based activities, while sturdy footwear is a must for hiking.
  • Pack for the Climate: Research the typical weather conditions of your destinations to pack appropriately. Tropical climates call for lightweight, breathable fabrics, while cooler destinations may require warmer layers.

Keeping Style in Mind

While functionality is key for activewear and excursion outfits, you don’t have to sacrifice style.

Many brands offer plus size activewear that is not only practical but also fashionable, featuring vibrant colors, patterns, and flattering cuts.

Choose pieces that make you feel good about how you look, as confidence can greatly enhance your overall experience.

Activewear and excursion outfits are all about finding the perfect balance between comfort, functionality, and style.

By choosing the right pieces, you’ll be well-prepared to dive into any adventure that comes your way, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable cruise experience.

Plus Size Cruise Outfits

Accessorizing Your Cruise Wardrobe

Accessorizing is the art of elevating your outfits with just a few key pieces, turning the simplest ensemble into something special.

On a cruise, where luggage space may be limited, selecting versatile and impactful accessories can add variety and flair to your wardrobe without overpacking.

Here’s how to choose and style accessories that will enhance your plus size cruise outfits.

Jewelry: The Statement Makers

Elevating Every Look

  • Statement Pieces: A bold necklace or a pair of chandelier earrings can instantly transform a daytime outfit into evening-ready attire.
  • Mix & Match: Bring versatile pieces that can work with multiple outfits. Think stackable bracelets, simple stud earrings, and pendant necklaces.
  • Storage Solutions: To keep jewelry organized and untangled, invest in a travel jewelry organizer or use small zippered bags.

Scarves and Wraps: The Versatile Accessory

Style and Functionality

  • Material Matters: Lightweight scarves are perfect for warm climates, offering style as well as protection from the sun. Silk or chiffon scarves add elegance and can easily transition from day to night.
  • Ways to Wear: Use a scarf as a wrap on cooler evenings, tie it to your bag for a pop of color, or wear it as a headband for a chic touch.

Bags and Purses: Carrying in Style

From Day Trips to Elegant Dinners

  • Daytime Bags: A crossbody bag is ideal for excursions, keeping your hands free and your belongings secure. Choose one with multiple compartments for easy organization.
  • Evening Clutches: For formal nights and upscale dinners, a sleek clutch or a small evening bag can carry your essentials while complementing your outfit.
  • Pack a Tote: A foldable tote bag can be a lifesaver for carrying souvenirs or doubling as a beach bag.

Footwear: The Foundation of Every Outfit

Comfort Meets Style

  • Versatile Shoes: Select shoes that can work with multiple outfits. A pair of stylish sneakers, comfortable walking sandals, and a pair of dressy flats or block heels can cover most cruise activities.
  • Footwear Accessories: Gel inserts or cushioned pads can enhance the comfort of your shoes, ensuring you can enjoy long walks or dance the night away without discomfort.

Sunglasses and Hats: Essential Protection

Chic and Protective

  • Sunglasses: Beyond protecting your eyes, sunglasses can add a touch of glamour or edginess to your look. Choose frames that flatter your face shape.
  • Hats: A wide-brimmed hat not only provides sun protection but also adds a statement to your beachwear and casual outfits.

Tips for Accessorizing on a Cruise

  • Coordinate Colors: Stick to a color scheme with your accessories to maximize mix-and-match possibilities.
  • Consider the Occasion: Match the style and formality of your accessories to the day’s activities and dress codes.
  • Less is More: Especially when traveling, it’s easy to over-accessorize. Choose a few key pieces that make you feel confident and enhance your outfits.

Accessorizing wisely can dramatically transform your cruise wardrobe, allowing you to create multiple looks with a limited number of pieces.

Whether it’s adding a touch of elegance with jewelry, a pop of color with scarves, or practicality with the right bag, the right accessories are your best friends in versatile cruise outfit planning.

Packing Tips and Tricks

Packing for a cruise, especially as a plus-size traveler, can seem like a daunting task. You want to bring enough options for every occasion, from formal dinners to poolside lounging, without overpacking.

Here are some expert tips and tricks to help you pack efficiently, ensuring you have everything you need to look and feel your best throughout your cruise.

Efficient Packing Strategies for Plus Size Clothing

Making the Most of Your Suitcase Space

  • Roll, Don’t Fold: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save space and reduce wrinkles. This technique is especially effective for bulkier items like dresses and pants.
  • Use Packing Cubes: Packing cubes are a game-changer for organizing your suitcase. They not only help you compartmentalize your outfits but also compress them to save space.
  • Plan Outfits in Advance: Avoid overpacking by planning your outfits ahead of time. Consider versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple looks with fewer items.

Must-Have Items for Any Cruise

Essentials You Shouldn’t Forget

  • Formal Attire: Most cruises have at least one formal night. Pack at least one formal outfit, such as a dress or a suit, along with appropriate shoes and accessories.
  • Light Jacket or Sweater: Even in tropical destinations, evenings can be cool, especially at sea. A light jacket or sweater can be a versatile layering piece.
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are essential for protecting yourself from the sun during daytime activities.
  • Comfortable Shoes: Pack shoes for different activities: comfortable walking shoes for excursions, sandals or flip-flops for the pool, and formal shoes for evenings.

Organizational Tools and Gadgets

Aiding in Efficient and Smart Packing

  • Compression Bags: These can be particularly useful for bulkier items like jackets or sweaters, as they remove air and reduce volume.
  • Multi-purpose Footwear: Select shoes that can serve multiple purposes (e.g., stylish sneakers that are comfortable for walking but chic enough for casual dining) to save space.
  • Electronics Organizer: Keep your chargers, adapters, and other electronics neatly organized and easily accessible with a compact organizer.

Dealing with Overpacking

Strategies to Lighten Your Load

  • Lay Out Everything Before Packing: This allows you to visually assess and eliminate any unnecessary items.
  • Limit Yourself to Two Bags: A checked bag for most of your clothing and essentials, and a carry-on for valuables, electronics, and a change of clothes in case your luggage is delayed.
  • Wear Your Bulkiest Items on the Plane: To save space in your luggage, wear your bulkiest shoes and a heavier layer during your travel.

Final Thoughts

Packing for a cruise doesn’t have to be stressful.

With careful planning and the right techniques, you can ensure that you have everything you need without overburdening yourself with too much luggage .

Remember, the goal is to enjoy your cruise comfortably and stylishly, with all the essentials at hand to make your trip unforgettable.

Plus Size Cruise Wear FAQs

Embarking on a cruise brings with it a wave of excitement and, for many, a sea of questions—especially when it comes to packing the right outfits.

To help navigate these waters, we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions about plus size cruise wear, providing answers to ensure you set sail with confidence and style.

How Do I Choose the Right Size When Ordering Online?

  • Measure Yourself Accurately: Use a measuring tape to measure your bust, waist, and hips, and compare these measurements with the sizing chart provided by the brand.
  • Read Reviews: Customer reviews can offer insights into how true to size apparel is and whether you might need to size up or down.
  • Look for Flexible Fabrics: Garments with a bit of stretch can offer a more forgiving fit.

Can I Wear the Same Outfit More Than Once?

  • Absolutely! Cruises are the perfect setting to repeat outfits. Accessories and layering can transform a look, allowing you to wear the same base outfit in different ways.

How Do I Pack for Unpredictable Weather?

  • Layering is Key: Bring pieces you can layer, like t-shirts, cardigans, and lightweight jackets, to adjust to changing temperatures.
  • Waterproof Outerwear: A waterproof jacket can be a lifesaver for unexpected rain showers, especially during shore excursions.

What Kind of Shoes Should I Bring?

  • Versatile Footwear: Aim for shoes that can serve multiple purposes—comfortable walking shoes for daytime exploration, water-resistant sandals for poolside lounging, and formal shoes for evening activities.
  • Consider the Activities: If your cruise itinerary includes adventurous excursions, bring appropriate footwear, such as hiking boots or water shoes.

How Can I Ensure My Formal Wear Fits Perfectly?

  • Consider Tailoring: If off-the-rack options don’t fit perfectly, investing in tailoring can make a significant difference, ensuring you look and feel your best on formal nights.
  • Choose Adjustable Styles: Dresses with lace-up backs or adjustable straps offer more flexibility in fit.

Are There Any Tips for Plus Size Swimwear Shopping?

  • Focus on Support: Look for swimwear with built-in support features, like underwire cups or high-waisted bottoms, for a flattering fit.
  • Try Different Styles: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles to find what makes you feel most comfortable and confident.

What Should I Do if I Experience a Wardrobe Malfunction?

  • Be Prepared: Pack a small sewing kit for minor repairs, and bring safety pins and double-sided tape for quick fixes.
  • Embrace It: If a malfunction happens, remember that everyone is there to have a good time. A sense of humor can go a long way in handling the situation gracefully.

How Do I Deal with Wrinkled Clothes?

  • Pack Smart: Rolling clothes instead of folding can reduce wrinkles. Also, packing a portable steamer or using the ship’s laundry services are great options.

Key Factors to Consider While Shopping for Plus Size Cruise Wear

Choosing the perfect cruise wear is an exciting adventure, much like your forthcoming voyage. To ensure you sail smoothly, pay attention to some crucial factors. Fit is the first one; selecting clothes that embrace your curves, rather than hiding them, can work wonders for your self-confidence.

Consider comfort alongside style – remember, you’ll be living in these clothes for a while. Breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are your best friends in the warm weather, keeping you cool while ensuring you look fabulous. And don’t forget to check for versatility – a single piece that can transform from daywear to nightwear with a simple change of accessories is worth its weight in gold.

Tips for Styling Plus Size Cruise Wear

Styling

Styling plus size cruise wear is all about balancing comfort with elegance. Accessories are your secret weapon here; they can turn a simple outfit into a showstopper. Think about statement necklaces, colorful scarves, or chunky bracelets – they all add a pop of personality and color to your ensemble.

Footwear is another game-changer. Comfortable sandals for daytime adventures, and a dressy pair for the night, can make a significant difference. And above all, don’t forget the most important tip – confidence is your most attractive accessory. So wear your outfits with a smile and a dash of sass, and you’re sure to turn heads. Enjoy your cruise, gorgeous women!

Embarking on a cruise vacation is an exciting adventure, and selecting the right cruise wear is a delightful part of that journey. Whether it’s elegant formal dresses , breezy maxi dresses, comfortable palazzos, or those oh-so-stylish kimonos and tunics, your options are as vast as the ocean you’ll be sailing. Remember, it’s all about choosing pieces that resonate with your personal style, provide comfort, and make you feel fabulous.

Never forget that fashion is about expressing who you are. It’s about celebrating your individuality and feeling good in your own skin. Plus size is not a size, it’s a state of grace. So, embrace your curves, ladies! Pack your suitcase with confidence, don those beautiful outfits, and prepare to enjoy a cruise vacation full of unforgettable memories.

Fashion should never be a barrier, but rather a gateway to expressing yourself. When you board that ship, remember, the world is your runway. Happy cruising, beautiful!

Do you need fancy clothes on a cruise?

Not necessarily. The need for fancy clothes on a cruise largely depends on the cruise line’s dress code and itinerary. Most cruises have a mix of casual, semi-formal, and formal nights. For casual nights, comfortable clothing like maxi dresses, jumpsuits, or kaftans would work. For semi-formal or formal nights, you might consider packing a cocktail dress or an evening gown. But remember, comfort should be your top priority.

What do you wear on a 6-day cruise?

On a 6-day cruise, you’ll need a mix of casual wear for daytime activities and lounging, swimwear for pool or beach time, and more formal attire for evening dinners and events. Always consider the weather, planned activities, and the cruise line’s dress code. A plus size packing list, might include items like swing dresses, cover-ups, blouses, Bermuda shorts, and cocktail dresses.

Is it OK to wear jeans on a cruise?

Absolutely! Jeans can be a comfortable and versatile option, especially for casual days on the ship or excursions on land. However, some cruise lines might not allow jeans in dining rooms during dinner. It’s best to check the cruise line’s dress code beforehand. A nice pair of jeans teamed up with a stylish top and accessories can make a chic outfit.

Plus Size Evening Wear: Not Quite Formal, but Not Quite “Casual”

  • Most 7-night cruises will have a dress code that requests guests dress “smart casual” 5 nights of the cruise and “formal” or “elegant” for two nights.
  • For those “smart casual nights”, dresses of all types are a great choice for evenings on the ship. But, there are so many choices! If dresses aren’t your jam, don’t be afraid to wear pants, capri’s, slacks, jumpsuits, or even dressy shorts or jeans (on most ships this is fine).
  • Flowing maxi dresses are a must-have for any cruise. They’re comfortable, and versatile, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Look for styles with empire waists, ruching, or wrap silhouettes to flatter your curves.
  • Sundresses can be worn day or night, and in some cases, re-worn for both casual dinners and days around the ship.
  • Wrap dresses are gorgeous and figure-flattering, and fun to shop for on Amazon!

11 Plus Size Cruise Fashion Looks

Slowly but surely I’m becoming a cruise convert! I’ve gone from quiet holidays by a pool in Spain where I barely talk to anyone to busy cruises full of people for a few reasons. The main reason is the incredible accessibility, but I have an entire post on that , the second is that a cruise holiday is the perfect excuse to dress up every day! We were absolutely flooded with compliments every time we stepped out of the cabins, it was the same on our last cruise too.

Cruise people are extremely friendly and with the lifts being quite small it means that 9/10 you will get talking to people! So I thought I’d share some plus size cruise fashion to help give you ideas on what you could wear on your next cruise.

Plus Size Cruise Fashion

What’s the dress code on a cruise?

I do want to point out straight away that you don’t necessarily have to dress up every single day. If you’ve been off exploring for example and want a bite to eat before bed, as long as you’re dressed appropriately most places will let you in. It’s just common sense really, if you’ve been in a pool you can’t go sit in a restaurant in your towel. No shorts in the evenings for another example.

Every cruise line is slightly different with exactly what they accept but most cruises are stricter for their Celebration Evening. Usually, it’s one night a week, or I’ve read on some smaller cruise lines it’s two nights a week where everyone has to dress up.

On the P&O Iona for example you won’t be allowed into most places on Celebration Evening without the proper attire, however, you will still be able to go to the buffet areas. So if you like the sound of cruises but dressing up just isn’t for you, you don’t have to completely miss out!

Most people do decide to dress up in the evenings depending on their plans, so if you were off to a show and dinner for example. If you’d like to see what we got up to every day then see my P&O Iona Norwegian Fjords Cruise post.

My mum and I were very conscious that we didn’t want to buy anything brand new for this cruise. In the last few years, we’ve been really good with not hoarding clothes and donating or selling things, especially as we work from home and don’t go out that often. I hate seeing pretty clothes just sitting in my room when someone could be living their best life in them! This meant we took a deep dive into our wardrobes to find out some of our all-time favourite dresses and even swapped a few between us too! It was so much fun to do.

Vinted played a huge role in our plus size cruise fashion too as I was on it for absolutely months buying different things and checking my saved searches daily. Maya Deluxe, Lovedrobe, and sparkly dresses were all saved searches and soon the algorithm on there was better than looking on sites for brand new things! Everything it was showing me was utter perfection!

Of course, this black star print dress above came up under sparkly dresses, and since I already have the navy version, I knew this would be a solid throw-on glamorous dress. It’s from Bloomchic and it’s paper thin, seriously so so thin which I love as I hate getting overheated in big fancy dresses.

Plus depending on where you are on a cruise, one thing you might want to consider with plus size cruise fashion is the thickness of your outfits. Although we were in Norway, inside the ship can be pretty toasty! This meant this was a really great purchase, I can see myself wearing this time after time!

I believe this is a size 26 but you do need to be careful with Bloomchic and check the sizing charts properly.

Mixing Second Hand with New

When I saw this George at Asda teal coat on Vinted I just knew it would go perfectly with a new in Hell Bunny dress I had just received from working with them. It’s thick enough that I didn’t freeze in Norway but also not too overheating. I wore it open and loose as it’s only a 24 so it didn’t close whilst sat down in my wheelchair but it still did a great job and I paid £10 for it! Amazing, right?

This Hell Bunny Sianna dress is a 6XL and it’s one of the prettiest dresses I’ve ever seen them do, the fit is perfect and I just absolutely love it!

Old Favourites

This blue velvet star print dress came on my last cruise, and it’ll probably come on my next. It comes out every winter as it’s just one of my all-time favourite dresses. It’s velvet but a midi length which helps with not getting too hot in it! I have to absolutely jump whenever Collectif finally brings out some dresses past a size 22, although these velvet dresses are extremely generous and will fit a size up!

Another old favourite is this gorgeous Shein green velvet maxi Dress with gold detailing. I know, Shein isn’t a good company but when you are plus size there’s a severe lack of options. Especially in the last few years so no hate towards plus size people who still shop there. I have stopped now and instead, if I see something from Shein I really do want, I’ll look on Vinted.

I got this a few years back and I’ve worn it out once which is just such a shame! I was so glad to give this a proper outing and some lovely balcony photos too. Thankfully most years lots of places do bring out beautiful green velvet options like the ones below.

Back to Vinted for this beautiful leopard print pleated maxi dress that caught my mum’s eye. It’s one of those where you can really dress up or down. It’s a slight satin so it has a lovely sheen to it as well. There’s a lot of fabric which makes it quite dramatic too!

Shop this Newlook Dress in Snake Print .

Swapping Dresses

If you have a family member or friend who is the same size as you, it can be an amazing thing to swap dresses from time to time! Or even head to a clothes swap in your area! My mum and I swapped a few things and Marie ended up wearing my beautiful blue glittery angel-sleeved maxi dress from Yours Clothing that I actually wore on Celebration Night last year on our first cruise ( P&O Iona Northern Europe Christmas Markets Cruise .)

I think she looked utterly amazing in it and it looked so different on us both too. With plus size cruise fashion, there’s really no need to buy new things every cruise, I can imagine this will come on our next one too!

Shop this exact dress on Yours Clothing , now in purple too!

Lovedrobe & Maya Deluxe

Honestly, I’d been so unenthusiastic about new releases in the plus size fashion world for years now but lately, Lovedrobe and Maya Deluxe have me checking their site for every new release! With me organising our plus size cruise fashion looks and having a very important family wedding coming up early next year, these are by far the best companies for fancy evening options.

I have actually looked at every UK plus size brand in existence and just no one is consistently bringing out dresses I actually love like Lovedrobe and Maya Deluxe, four out of seven of my outfits were from them so I think that speaks volumes!

Starting off with this absolutely stunning Lovedrobe Embroidered Maxi Dress. How utterly beautiful is this? It’s actually a full-length sleeve but I never think those suit me so I simply bunched it up at my elbow and I love how it puffs out along with a little on the top of the shoulder.

It looks more intentional that way too. It’s an absolutely perfectly fitting dress and even though it is double-layered with the embroidery on top, I wasn’t too hot in it at all! I received this from Lovedrobe a few months back for work and we made sure to hold on to it as it was just so beautiful!

Plus Size Cruise Fashion, lovedrobe, georgina grogan, shemightbeloved

You can still get this exact dress on Lovedrobe’s Amazon !

Plus Size Cruise Fashion, lovedrobe, georgina grogan, shemightbeloved

Another Lovedrobe but this Tie-Neck Pleated Satin Midi Dress is actually from one of their latest collections that I shot for my Instagram just a few weeks before we left for our cruise. The tie in the middle can actually go around your neck but I prefer to wear it this way. I think the pleats and the arms are absolutely beautiful and I always love a sweetheart neckline! The colour is utterly gorgeous and it’s just such a beautiful beautiful dress.

Plus Size Cruise Fashion, lovedrobe, georgina grogan, shemightbeloved

Finally for Celebration Evening after buying my mum the most spectacular dress (I’ll save the best until last), I knew I needed to up my game. I had spotted this sequin vertical striped gown on Maya Deluxe a few months back and wondered how I would look in it. I kept on looking through lots of options and buying several different blue or teal Maya Deluxe dresses from Vinted but nothing had the wow factor that my mum’s dress did.

Goddiva via Vinted

When I saw this gold and sequin gown on Vinted I actually gasped out loud! I didn’t show my mum straight away as I wanted it to be a surprise and by her reaction when it arrived, it definitely was! The Goddiva Plus Sequin & Mesh Embroidered Maxi Dress is one the most beautiful dresses I have ever seen and my mum looked incredible in it! This has definitely put Goddiva on our radar and we’ll be checking their site and Vinted in the future!

I hope this helped you think of some plus size cruise fashion looks and be sure to let me know what your favourite was in the comments below.

Ps – You might be thinking, that lots of those dresses didn’t look wheelchair friendly? You’d be absolutely correct. I got caught in my wheels at least 3 times a day but I’d just hold my dresses up higher. The fashion was worth the effort!

12 Cruise Outfits You’ll Love to Wear

Taking a cruise is a once in a lifetime experience. Cruising gives you the chance to relax by the pool, sightsee & shop at various ports, go on thrilling excursions and dine on incredible meals. A cruise is the ultimate vacation! Plan your cruise outfits carefully and not only will you look good in your photos but you’ll also be able to travel relatively light. Read my complete cruise ship packing list with printable PDF checklist that you can download.

Wondering what to wear on a cruise? Cruise ship attire can be a little tricky to plan, especially if this is your first cruise. Cruise attire varies from a bathing suit & cover up to cocktail dresses and if you’re not careful you can end up way overpacking. With this post, I’ve put together 12 outfits for a cruise that will take you from excursions to evening easily, without stuffing your suitcase. You’ll see that all my cruise clothing can be mixed and matched to create multiple cruise ship outfits from just a few key pieces.

These Caribbean cruise outfits are by no means definitive but I just want to show you how easy cruise wear can be to put together when you know how. With seven basic pieces you can build so many different outfits for cruise activities and excursions, pack light and, most importantly, look fantastic.

Note that this is all Caribbean cruise attire but almost all these outfits would work for a Mediterranean cruise also. You can read my European Cruise Packing List post here.

If you’re looking for advice on what to wear on an Alaskan cruise, please see my Alaska Cruise Packing List for lots of ideas as your outfits for this will be much, much different than the ones listed below.

Cruise Wardrobe Essentials

For a full list of what to bring on a cruise, read my Ultimate Cruise Packing List here.  We also just on our first cruise with Carnival so I created a Carnival cruise packing list too .

My cruise wardrobe ideas are all built on a few key pieces. With these few items and a few well-chosen accessories you can create so many outfits to wear on a cruise! You’ll notice that all the accessories I’ve picked to go with this cruise dress attire have been repeated throughout the outfits. I’ve included plus-size alternatives to the key basic pieces and of course the accessories are all plus-size friendly. I have also tried to pick affordable pieces with many  items coming in under $35.

  • White bermuda shorts   – Add a pair of denim shorts too and double the amount of outfits you have. If you don’t do shorts, you can switch these out for capri pants.
  • Striped t-shirts   – A couple of striped t-shirts are perfect for a cruise and nicely nautical.
  • White jeans   – White jeans or pants are a great cruise outfit. If you don’t want to wear jeans, you can switch these out for linen pants or capri pants. See my list of the best travel pants for more ideas.
  • Sundress   – So simple and easy. I’ve gone for a royal blue here but this dress comes in lots of colors. Add a black one in for even more outfit options.
  • Maxi dress  – Easy and comfortable to wear on travel days, around the ship or when you feel your waist expanding from all the delicious food onboard! A solid is more versatile than a print but you could easily bring along a second dress in a print.
  • Black jumpsuit  – Stylish and versatile. You can build so many cruise outfits ideas with a black jumpsuit as a base. If you’re not comfortable trying out a jumpsuit a black maxi dress would work instead.
  • Kimono   – A super lightweight addition to any women’s wardrobe and one of the best cruise wardrobe items. It can be used as a pool cover up with a bathing suit and flip flops.

Here are my Ideas for Best Cruise Outfits!

Bright maxi dress for day.

A maxi dress is one of the best outfits for cruise ship passengers because it is lightweight, comfortable and works with many body types. Just remember to pack a suitable bra if you’re getting one like this with spaghetti straps.

  • White cat eye Ray Ban sunglasses
  • Floral print scarf
  • Brown beach tote
  • Tan sandals

Plus size option:

Bright Maxi Dress Dressed Up for Evening

  • Black & teal statement necklace & earrings
  • Peacock print sequinned purse
  • Gold wedge sandals

Colourful Tunic with Shorts for Day

This is perfect casual cruise attire for on or off the ship.

  • Colorful tunic
  • White vest top for underneath
  • White bermuda shorts

Plus size options:

  • White bermuda shorts or capri pants if you’re not comfortable in shorts
  • Pink tunic or blue print tunic or aqua tunic

Colorful Tunic with White Jeans for Evening

  • Gold statement necklace
  • Gold wristlet purse
  • White jeans

Black Jumpsuit for Sightseeing Excursion

A black jumpsuit is one of the best outfits for a cruise! It’s so versatile and stylish.

  • Black jumpsuit
  • Aviator sunglasses

Black Jumpsuit for Formal Dining

This jumpsuit goes easily from daywear to attire for Captain’s dinner on a cruise just by switching out the accessories for more glamorous options. If you don’t want to do a jumpsuit then a black dress would also make perfect cruise dinner attire.

  • Black sheer & beaded bolero
  • Black strappy heels
  • Sequin bolero

Striped T-Shirt for Easy Excursions

A nautical-inspired striped t-shirt is one of the nicest cruise wear ideas. Comfortable, practical and easy to wear. I like this one because it’s slightly longer length means it covers my butt but could also be knotted at the side or tucked in and flounced over jeans.

  • Striped t-shirt
  • Sketchers Go Walk sneakers

Striped T-Shirt for Smart Casual Dining

  • Blue statement necklace

Kimono with Sundress for Day

This is classic cruise casual attire and would work for a city sightseeing excursion or a day at the beach. The kimono provides good sun coverage for your back & shoulders and can be worn over a swimsuit as a beach coverup also.

  • Sundress (Same dress as picture, goes up to 3XL)

Kimono with Chiffon Vest & White Jeans for Evening

  • Chiffon tank top
  • Longer length vest top – the one pictured above does go up to 2XL though

Simple Sundress for Informal Evening

Dressed up sundress for formal dining.

Cruise ship dinner attire for formal dining evenings doesn’t have to be a cocktail dress or evening gown. You can dress up a simple sundress with the right accessories.

I hope you enjoyed my cruise wardrobe planner!

These cruise clothes ideas are based on my own experience on two Caribbean cruises. I way overpacked my Caribbean cruise wardrobe on my first cruise. I didn’t know what proper cruise attire was so packed much more than I needed, just in case. By my second cruise I had some practical experience on cruise attire ideas based on what other travelers wore on board and what I did and didn’t use from my first experience. On my second cruise our whole family of four managed to travel in just one carry on backpack!

On my first cruise with RCL I did note that Royal Caribbean cruise attire was slightly dressier in my experience than what we observed on our second cruise with Norwegian. As mentioned above, we just went on a Carnival cruise too so I have put together a packing list for that also.

Now you should have some really good ideas on proper cruise attire for women. Be sure to drop me a comment below to let me know if this blog post helped you pack for your cruise.

This is some awesome information for my first cruise. I always seem to pack to much. This helps to know how to mix n match perfectly! Thanks

Thanks Kay! I’m glad it’s helpful!

This is great! Has given me lots of ideas for my first cruise. Thanks

Great idea’s! Going on my 2nd cruise on the 19th!

Awesome Karri! Where are you cruising to on this trip?

We’re going to Montego Bay, Georgetown and Cozumel on Carnival!

' src=

I am going on my first cruise…a New England cruise on Carnival Sunshine in early September ….what are some suggestions to pack as I am not sure of the weather at that time of year..

' src=

Great ideas for a cruise wardrobe and I really like all the outfits.

' src=

Thank you for the great cruise wardrobe ideas! We are cruising the Mediterranean at the beginning of October. Do I pack for the Fall/seaon or ignore the season for cruise wear?

' src=

Love, love, love this post! Thank you so much for breaking down the clothing into outfits. I am going on a ten day cruise to the Caribbean in February. I am following your packing suggestions. Our cruise will be on an Italian ship (MSC Divina) leaving from Miami. We will be visiting the US Virgin Islands, St. Kitts & Nevis, Martinique, Barbados, and Guadeloupe.

Have you tried the black jumpsuit that you reference on Amazon? I am considering buying it, but I was wondering what your experience has been with it.

As for sandals, I love the Abeo brand available from the Walking Company because of the arch support that they provide. I’ve had plantar fasciitis before, so now I always wear shoes with good arch support.

Awesome Karen! I have plantar fasciitis on and off too so definitely wear comfy sandals. How tall are you? The jumpsuit is long but I’m only 5’2″ so needed it taken up.

' src=

This is a brilliant list and I’m even more grateful for the plus sized versions! This will make things so simple! ?

Thanks for the compliment Jennifer! Gotta represent for the plus size ladies! 🙂

' src=

I like the combinations but do you really need a hand bag or clutch on a cruise? I never carry a bag so I don’t get it.

No, you don’t need it. Sometimes it’s just nice to have to complete the outfit though. You don’t need it for cash of course but for your cruise card and a bit of extra lipstick to touch up after dinner is always nice. Especially if you’re having photos on formal night.

' src=

This was so helpful as I plan my first cruise in April. We are sailing on the Summit from San Juan on a 7 day trip. I am a planner and guilty of overpacking, overthinking scenarios. We are doing 2 excursions and have to consider that attire as well. Thank you

Traveling Fashion Tips: 7 Fun Plus-Size Cruise Wear Options

Posted by Owner Account on August 08, 2021

a full figured woman modeling a make a splash swim top in mint

If you have a cruise on your itinerary soon, but you’re wondering which outfits to pack, you have come to the right place! We are going to explore all of the pieces you should bring with you to create vacation outfits that are cute and versatile. Not only will you be wearing plus-size maxi dresses for summer , but we also have other outfit ideas that will have you feeling confident and beautiful throughout your entire vacation.

a smiling woman wearing a stepping ahead dress in leopard print

1. Dresses for Every Occasion

Every tropical vacation calls for stunning dresses that keep you feeling cool but looking hot. For a cruise, you may want to pack a few different dresses so that you’re ready for multiple occasions. For example, you may attend a fancy captain’s dinner one night, hit up the comedy club or nightclub another night and then, of course, you will need a flowy and beautiful dress to venture off the ship in. We suggest packaging a party dress, a plus size maxi dress and a mini wrap dress.

a close up of a full figured woman sporting a pair of wont change my hearts shorts medium wash

2. Shorts Are the Main Staple

You can’t have a tropical vacation without wearing plus-size shorts . While you can certainly pack jeans or flowy pants, shorts are the most practical option for a vacation in warm weather. You can choose different styles of shorts, from linen to denim, and pair them with cute blouses, crop tops or bikinis. Shorts are also a great piece to bring with you as you lounge on the beach or hang out poolside since they can easily be thrown on as a coverup if you need them.

3. Cute Plus-Size Swimwear

Of course, you will need the cutest plus-size swimwear on a cruise. Whether you love wearing plus-size swimwear that’s more minimal or bold, we have some fun pieces that are going to elevate your vacation wardrobe. Choose from cute two-piece or one-piece swimsuits that contour your curves and boost your confidence.

4. Kimonos

If you want to turn your favorite swimsuits into an outfit, make sure you pack cute swim cover-ups or flowy kimonos that you can throw on throughout the day. You will be feeling like the goddess you are as you walk through the ship and lie by the pool. If you want to pack one kimono that goes with everything, prioritize neutral colors over bold prints and patterns.

5. Sandals and Shoes

Every vacation outfit needs a cute pair of shoes. Make sure you pack a variety of sandals that you can wear with shorts, dresses and poolside, as well as a pair of sneakers if you plan on doing anything adventurous outside the cruise ship. You can also pack a pair of heels if you plan on attending a fancy dinner or a nightclub.

a close up of a pair of good enough for me earrings

6. Accessories

Every outfit can be elevated with your favorite summer accessories. If you’re packing light and don’t have a lot of room in your suitcase, here are some of our favorite accessories to bring. Dainty gold jewelry like earrings, necklaces and bracelets can easily fit in your carryon, and they also add a glamorous look to every outfit. You can strategically pack a floppy hat in your suitcase by laying it upside down and packing around it.

a sunny in sienna handbag in brown

7. A Beach Tote and a Crossbody Bag

Aside from your primary luggage, you will want to pack a beach tote that is cute, but which can also stand a little bit of water and sand, as well as a chic crossbody that is practical for all adventures. These two bags should pair well with all your looks and, above all else, allow you to partake in your favorite activities.

A Guide to Selecting Cruise Clothing for Plus Size Women Over 60

When choosing cruise attire, consider factors tailored to your plus-size body, ensuring a seamless blend of style and functionality.

These are some of the characteristics we looked for when putting together our list of cruise wear.

Versatility

Choose pieces that effortlessly transition from daytime activities to evening events, allowing for a diverse range of outfits.

Prioritize breathable fabrics suitable for different climates and activities, ensuring comfort throughout the journey.

Climate Adaptability

Pack thoughtfully for the destination’s weather, including lightweight options for warm destinations and layering possibilities for cooler regions.

Dress Codes

Be mindful of formal nights and dress codes, preparing elegant evening wear for those special occasions.

Footwear Finesse

Select comfortable shoes for excursions and explore dressier options for formal nights or onboard activities.

Sun Safeguarding

Incorporate sun protection into your packing. Look for clothing with SPF and complement your outfits with sun hats, visors, and sunglasses.

Swimwear Chic

Don’t overlook swimwear essentials; consider swim covers for added comfort and style.

Packing Prowess

Opt for packable clothing that is resistant to wrinkles, ensuring a hassle-free travel experience.

Cultural Considerations

Research cultural guidelines for modest attire during excursions, ensuring a respectful approach to each destination.

Accessorize Artfully

Enhance your outfits with carefully selected accessories such as scarves, jewelry, or hats, adding flair without compromising luggage space.

Sun dresses are a great addition to your cruising wardrobe, offering both comfort and style. If you’re a plus-size woman over 60, consider choosing shirt dresses and wrap dresses.

Shirt dresses provide a classic look with a flattering fit, while wrap dresses accentuate the waist for a feminine touch. Opt for breathable fabrics and vibrant prints for various cruise occasions.

what to wear on a cruise - cruise wear over 50

Sharing is caring!

It’s so much fun packing up and preparing for a cruise . For me, this often starts with thinking about what cruise outfits to wear. While this post is about cruise wear over 50, these cruise fashions can work well for women of all ages!

Please keep in mind that you should always wear what makes you look and feel good. It just happens that I’m turning 50 this summer, but I would wear these cruise outfits at 40 and at 60, and every age in between.

In this post, I share casual cruise wear ideas and formal wear options (all quite affordable). Whether you’re looking for a cute maxi dress or an elegant cocktail dress, I think you’ll like these styles. These outfits aren’t too tight, are versatile, and most importantly, look fabulous!

I’ve also included a few bathing suits and cover ups, shawls, tote bags and evening bags – accessories often complete the look, but are also really useful on a cruise.

I’ve also included photos of some of my own cruise outfits from past cruises. Now, I am by no means a model, but I have a theory that everyone looks good on a cruise .

  • 2-3 pair of shorts
  • 3-5 tops (day & evening)
  • 2-3 pair of dark jeans, capri pants or a skirt

Cruise Outfits for Ladies over 50

Cruise daywear.

On most cruises you can dress casually during the day, in shorts and a t-shirt, or a sundress.

For port days, consider your shore excursion plans and decide what to wear. If you’re heading to a beach , a bathing suit and cover up are perfect. If you’re sightseeing, a cute top and shorts or a sundress or maxi dress is the way to go.

Casual Dresses – Sundresses &  Maxi Dresses

Casual spaghetti strap sundress.

This casual spaghetti strap sundress is comfortable and cute, and would make a great embarkation day outfit. If you want to pack light for a cruise , you could even wear this dress in the evening with accessories.

Recommended: Casual sundress (see pricing and Amazon reviews here)

Romper /shorts

This one piece romper is casual, but looks a little bit cruisey just the same. Great on the ship or to wear on port days . It’s available in this nautical stripe, as well as solid colors and is very affordable (shhhh).

Maxi dresses

This striped maxi dress makes a great sundress or bathing suit cover up (that’s how I wear it). However, depending on the color or print, this maxi dress can look a bit more dressy.

Recommended: Maxi dress (see colors and pricing on Amazon)

This spaghetti strap maxi dress is comfortable and casual for strolling on a port day , but will also look great in the evening on your cruise. Take a look at the different colors and patterns. My favorites are the black, navy floral, and boho.

However, I love a deep blue dress when I’m cruising, so I always pack at least one of this color. Please note that this dress runs a little small, so you may want to size up.

Recommended:  Cute maxi with pockets (see color options & pricing here)

Evening Wear on a Cruise

cruise casual evening wear - ladies over 50

On a 7 day cruise, you’ll usually have 4-5 casual or smart casual evenings, sometimes called cruise casual. 2 evenings are usually formal or “chic” wear.

Casual & smart casual dress code:  Wear a stylish top and jeans, or Capri pants or a comfortable maxi dress. A little black dress or floral dress are great too.

Casual & Smart Casual Outfits on a Cruise

This beautiful floral dress is perfect cruise wear for the dining room or specialty restaurants . Loose fitting and stylish, (the v neck and 3/4 bell sleeves) it’s very flattering for women who are fabulous at 40 or 50!

Romper jumpsuit

Isn’t this outfit cute? Women of every age will look elegantly casual in a romper jumpsuit . Dress it up or down with your favorite shoes.

Should you carry a purse on a cruise?

You won’t need to carry a purse or wallet on a cruise. However, you may want to carry a casual tote bag to the pool, with your lip balm, sunscreen, reading glasses, a book, phone etc. It’s also great to have for when you get off the ship on a port day. In the evening, a small clutch or evening bag can hold your cruise card, cell phone and lipstick.

What? Are you planning a cruise around the world? The list you posted is way too much. No one needs all those clothes for a 7 day cruise. I have been on at least 50 cruises and less is more.

' src=

Everyone is different, so if you bring less than that’s great. Some people enjoy changing a couple of times a day while others are more minimalist. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

' src=

Wow! You are over packing. With 50 plus cruises under my belt I’ve found 3 day outfits and three evening outfits, 1 or 2 bathing suits snd coverup, gym clothes if so inclined., flip flops for the pool, good walking shoes and some pretty Sandals. Underwater and that’s it!

We’re all different, but thanks for sharing your packing list and style.

Have a wonderful cruise!

' src=

Your choices are super cute, but this is definitely a heavy packing list — I say this so newbie cruisers won’t think this is all necessary. I made a list years ago of what I actually wore on a cruise, and now I keep it (laminated) to use for future trips:

– 2 casual dresses – White jeans and two blouses for dinner – 3 pairs shorts/skirts and 5 day blouses – Light denim shirt as a jacket for evening walks on deck – 2 swimsuits and a cover-up for each one – Nightgown – Ball cap and straw hat – Tennis shoes, walking sandals, wedges for dinner

Perfect! Thanks for sharing

' src=

Personally I pack way more than this! Especially if we are driving to the port. I pack less if we are flying and I have to drag my suitcase around. I’ve been on 14 cruises and I’m 53. For me, cruises are a chance to dress up! I love Lilly Pulitzer dresses and shorts because they are bright and cheerful. I love my packing cubes – they are life changing!

Sounds great!

' src=

I tend to take longer cruises. My next cruise in 2024 is 35 days. But even on a 14 day cruise my first purchase would be their laundry package. I find it a great value! I can leave my clothes to be cleaned and have them back the next day clean and pressed. Allows you to have only 3 days of casual clothes if you want. Really space saving if you are flying to the cruise port.

Great idea!
