I need to hook some heat trace up and need it protected. I’d assume a 4-6 gfci breaker would have nussiance tripping. Is there a cheaper way to achieve 30ma or just find the breaker That’s meets this ?

power breaker 30ma trip

Not sure what heat trace is---is it the same as heat tape? Does the stuff plug in? If it is a plug in you have no choice if the receptacle is in an area that requires gfci. If it is direct wired then you don't need gfci unless the instructions call for it. Floor heat has gfci protection in the T-stat so I am not certain about what you have

power breaker 30ma trip

Depending what it is for it does need GFCI protection, for example, 427.22 requires it for pipeline and vessels. Likewise, 426.28 requires it for snow melting and de-icing equipment. It does NOT however specify class A (which is the 4-6mA trip) as the protection for receptacles does in 210.8. This means that a 30mA device can be used (IIRC this is class E protection).

Is this a commercial application or residential? I have installed hard wired heat tracing on 8" chiller pipes on the roof and used regular GFCI breakers without a problem. It was a system with T-stats and indicator lights. But then, I have not been back to check on it. I would try the GFCI for personal and if it does not work then look for the GFCI for equipment. What did the instructions say?

Just about every heat trace I've installed has 30 ma GFI breakers. Very rarely do they trip, if they do, there's usually a problem somewhere.

We've got a fair amount that has never had a GFI breaker on it, some with 5 mA breakers and the rest (obviously) is on 33 mA Breakers. I don't know that the 5 mA trips any more often than any other. Typically, when there is a fault it will trip the breaker regardless of the GFI rating. If there is only a bit of moisture in an end or power kit, that might make a difference.

Old parallel CH BR afci breakers were clearly labeled on the side as having 30ma ground fault protection. That is the only time I have ever willingly installed an arc fault breaker. Gfpe breaker for a third of the cost

GE and Eaton BR won't work for that now.

What does the leakage circuit breaker 30ma mean?

By direct contact of electrical shock hazards relatively large, causing serious consequences, so to use a higher sensitivity leakage circuit breakers, power tools, portable electrical equipment and temporary line, should be installed in the operating current of 30ma circuit, operation time leakage circuit breakers within 0.1s of. More residential household appliances, preferably mounted on the rear into the household power meter. So, it should be installed in the loop operating current of 30ma 30ma this number is what does that mean? In fact, representatives 30ma rated leakage current, IΔn = 30mA represents the rated residual current 30mA, IΔ = 15 mA represents the rated leakage current 15mA. It refers to a group of current flowing charge. Magnitude of the current is called a current intensity, the amount of charge by means of a cross-section of the wire per coulomb of electricity through a one amp per unit time is referred. Ampere is a basic unit of the International System of Units. Ammeter is designed to measure the current instrument. There are many natural load charge carriers, e.g., electrons movable conductive body, the electrolyte ions, electrons and the like ions within the ion, in hadron quark. Because of the presence of voltage, electric power is generated field, the free charge circuit subjected to electric force generated directional movement, thus forming a current circuit.

30ma refers to the rated current leakage circuit breakers, if the leakage exceeds the rated leakage current leakage circuit breaker will trip. Most drain leakage circuit breakers only one kind of specifications, has a drain leakage circuit breaker has several specifications, using DIP switches to select the rated leakage current block value. Leakage circuit breakers rated current 30ma refers to the leakage circuit breakers, in fact, for the earth leakage circuit breaker, the leakage circuit breaker parameters 30ma just one parameter index, there are a lot of indicators can help identify leakage circuit breakers scope and attention matter, if you are interested in some of the indicators parameters leakage circuit breakers, the more some understanding of it.

Why 30mA and 300ms?

A Residual Current Device is designed to protect people against death from electric shock.  To do this it must trip at below 30mA and in less than 300ms according to the Australian Standards.   But have you ever stopped to wonder why those particular values are chosen for the protection levels?

An Interesting History

A picture containing text, person, person, oldDescription automatically generated

Figure 20 from IEC 60479-1:2018

power breaker 30ma trip

AC-1:     Perception possible but usually no startled reaction

AC-2:     Involuntuary muscular contraction but no harmful effects

AC-3:     Strong muscular contractions, reversible disturbance to heart function, and difficulty breathing.

AC-4:     Possible irreversible effects (ie burns) and risk of ventricular fibrillation

AC-4.1 <5% chance of heart fibrillation

AC-4.2 <50% chance of heart fibrillation

AC-4.3 >50% chance of heart fibrillation

Determining the trip thresholds

We can see from the graph that a trip threshold of 30mA means that the shock current will never enter the zone where it could cause heart fibrillation, regardless of the duration.  By also limiting the maximum trip time at 30mA to 300ms, it means that the actual tripping threshold will be below a level where it causes issues to breathing or the heart.  For the same reason a current of 5xIDn (ie 150mA) must cause a trip in less than 40ms.

This is the reason the trip thresholds are set at the levels they are. If you’d like to learn more about RCD technology or standards, please visit our website at https://resources.ipd.com.au/rcd/

COMMENTS

  1. 30ma gfci

This means that a 30mA device can be used (IIRC this ...

  2. 5mA vs. 30mA sensitivity GFCI breaker

To solve this problem, motor rated GFCI was selected. The 5mA sensitivity GFCI (which is good for personnel protection) was still causing nuisance tripping. Would it be acceptable by NEC to use a 30mA sensitivity (equipment protection) GFCI breaker for this food warming equipment? Thanks, and have a great day!

  4. RCDs

RCDs are designed to provide additional protection from electrocution and electrical fires when a fault is detected in an electrical circuit. As such, RCD protection is essential for safety reasons and its importance should not be overlooked. RCD protection can either be fitted at the fuse board or individual sockets via integrated RCD protection.

  5. RCDs

They automatically trip if a problem is detected and immediately cut off the power. RCD units are available in a range of types and amp ratings to suit any circuit requirements. An RCCB is a residual current circuit breaker which acts as the same component but without the overload protection. Read more

  11. What does the leakage circuit breaker 30ma mean?

Because of the presence of voltage, electric power is generated field, the free charge circuit subjected to electric force generated directional movement, thus forming a current circuit. 30ma refers to the rated current leakage circuit breakers, if the leakage exceeds the rated leakage current leakage circuit breaker will trip.

  18. Why 30mA and 300ms?

By also limiting the maximum trip time at 30mA to 300ms, it means that the actual tripping threshold will be below a level where it causes issues to breathing or the heart. For the same reason a current of 5xIDn (ie 150mA) must cause a trip in less than 40ms. This is the reason the trip thresholds are set at the levels they are.

  23. Solar system tripping out mains.

Earthstore. Mar 24, 2012. #2. It sounds like your system is wired wrong. A PV system should not be on a shared RCD, so if your PV system is tripping the main RCD it must be wired in the wrong side of it. There have been many long threads on this very point. A PV system should be on its own RCD if one is needed at all.
