Sampha Is Bringing ‘Lahai’ Back on the Road With 2024 North American Tour

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Sampha will spend spring 2024 on the road continuing to promote his latest LP Lahai as the British singer has mapped out a North American tour.

The trek kicks off March 26 in Miami and works itself westward over the course of 14 shows, concluding April 14 in Vancouver.

In addition to the tour announcement , Sampha has shared the video for Lahai ’s “Can’t Go Back.”

“I spent a lot of time predicting negativity would come my way based on previous life experiences,” Sampha wrote of the video on social media. “I would rush past everything thinking I had no time to do anything. I think writing this song was part of learning how to forgive myself in that state of being and to say it’s ok to start now. It’s not always too late. It’s just as important to slow down and recognize I have boundaries and a bandwidth.”

“I guess on my album I was thinking a lot about time, and divinity, and infinity, and connection. And circles in some way just become a repeating theme in some of my visual references, and also in some of my songwriting,” Sampha told Rolling Stone in October.

Sampha Reveals 'LAHAI''s Tracklist, Release Date and Corresponding Tour

Also releasing a new single and music video..

Sampha did the most today – thankfully. This afternoon alone, the British musician managed to unveil the tracklist for his first album in six years, LAHAI , confirm its forthcoming release date, announce two new sets of tour dates, and drop a new single “Only” alongside its music video.

LAHAI, Sampha’s sophomore album, is an authentic and personal exploration into the chaos and the calm of human existence; the album shares both his middle name as well as his paternal grandfather’s first name. The album also sees contributions from some of Sampha’s closest friends, including Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey of Kokoroko, Ibeyi, Black Midi drummer Morgan Simpson, Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves, and Kwake Bass.

Sampha: Tiny Desk Concert

Ashley Pointer headshot

When Sampha first performed at the Tiny Desk in 2017, it was just him and his keys. But for this second round, he had a very specific vision to execute. Accompanied by a spirited four-piece band who double as his background singers and percussionists, each member relishes in making music in multiple, creative configurations.

Sampha Lahai Sisay's music is known for its sheer vulnerability in tackling the human experience. On his debut album, Process , we met a son mourning the loss of his parents while navigating the relationship with his partner and future mother of his first child. On a transcendental follow-up, LAHAI, we now meet Sampha as a father and a companion, asking us to revel in the magic of our existence.

In this Tiny Desk concert, Sampha performs three songs from LAHAI — "Spirit 2.0," "Only" and "Dancing Circles" — expertly rearranging each to sound exactly like its recorded version, allowing his ethereal voice and infectious grooves to wash over the room. Concluding the set with "Without," Sampha and his band gather in a drum circle, creating a cacophony of percussive rhythms, building the song from the bottom up. The performance ends with Sampha singing solo at the piano, beautifully reminiscent of his first Tiny Desk, except this time with his partner and children sitting criss-cross applesauce in front of the Desk. Truly a full circle moment.

Sampha Details New Album Lahai, Shares 2023 Tour Dates

The sophomore effort is out on October 20th

Sampha Details New Album Lahai, Shares 2023 Tour Dates

Sampha has detailed his new album, Lahai , out on October 20th via Young. What’s more, the English singer has also mapped out an accompanying fall tour and shared the latest single, “Only.”

The album title references the name of Sampha’s paternal grandfather, which is also the artist’s middle name. Clocking in at 14 tracks, Lahai features contributions from Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey (Kokoroko), Ibeyi, Morgan Simpson (Black Midi), Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves, and Kwake Bass. It’s described in a press release as a “communal affair” in which Sampha explores human connection while crossing genres including jazz, soul, rap, dance, jungle, and West African music.

Sampha’s supporting tour will kick off with a three-date London residency at Hackney Church beginning October 12th ahead of North American dates in Chicago, Toronto, New York City, and more. It will wrap up in December with a brief run of Europe; see the full itinerary below. A Live Nation pre-sale begins on Thursday, September 14th (use access code STUDIO ) ahead of the general on-sale slated for September 15th via Ticketmaster .

Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub for US dates or viagogo for shows in the UK and Europe. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

Featuring a skittering beat co-produced by El Guincho and Sampha himself, “Only” is a contemplative track in which Sampha ponders his very existence. “I been on this grind like it’s gonna break my fall,” he sings. “Careerism pothole, like ‘Where my love one goes?’/ Obediently blindly, I trust you and you know.” Watch the accompanying video, directed by Dexter Navy, below.

Lahai also features the previous single “Spirit 2.0 . It marks the follow-up to Sampha’s excellent 2017 debut, Process .

Sampha delivers transcendent vocals at the Howard Theatre

The london-born singer-producer’s instrument was as finely tuned on stage as it is on record at the second of two sold-out shows..

sampha tour 2023

On Sunday night, Sampha’s second sold-out show at the Howard Theatre began with what sounded like dispatches from the cosmos. Fittingly, the London-born singer-producer took his place behind a laptop and keyboard in the middle of four bandmates behind various pieces of equipment, less a conductor and more the captain of a musical USS Enterprise.

But while his lyrics are sometimes fixed like a telescope on the skies and certain sonic accoutrements evoke science fiction soundscapes, Sampha spent his set focused on earthly concerns, finding transcendence through his voice and the power of percussion.

Sharp. Witty. Thoughtful. Sign up for the Style Memo newsletter.

It was Sampha’s voice — soulful and soothing, wounded and vulnerable — that first caught listeners’ attention over a decade ago, first as a “Who is this!?” discovery on the boundary-pushing debut of English electronic music producer SBTRKT, then as a sample that outshined the song on Drake’s album “Nothing Was the Same.”

In concert, the singer’s instrument is as finely tuned as it is on record, whether it be 2017’s Mercury Prize-winning “Process” or the just-released “Lahai,” with his distinct tone and phrasing intact. While the capacity crowd let out cheers for some of his particularly stunning vibrato-full runs, the D.C. audience was uncharacteristically hushed and respectful of the pauses and silences in his music. But more so than on his headphone-ready albums, the reverberations of percussion — jittery, clattering, heartbeat-skipping and, at one point, taking the form of a drum circle — turned bodies into flesh-and-bone pinball machines.

As those beats shifted, warped and crescendoed, Sampha occasionally felt compelled to leave his perch and dance across the stage. The audience, packed in elbow-to-elbow, had to suffice with tiny two-steps and head bobbing. No matter: As he sang on a cover of Roy Davis Jr. and Peven Everett’s “Gabriel,” “Dancing soon became a way to communicate/ … Feel the music deep in your soul.”

The Style section

It’s the soul, not the corpus, where Sampha’s music hits hardest. His vocals and lyrics found life-affirming beauty amid the cacophony, as he interrogated “sour and strained” relationships and reminisced over photos on phone screens. Throughout, he remained a seeker trying to rely on instinct rather than intellect: acknowledging the places and people that he can’t go back to while embracing the forces of nature — light, love, spirit, faith — that he maintains will catch him, and us, in the end.

“This energy we exchange is very special,” the mostly reserved musician said before ending his set. “My heart is full.”

He soon returned for a solo encore of “Happens,” his fingers a whirlwind on the keys. “I don’t have the answers, so I won’t tell you lies,” he sang. “... I found my love and I don’t want to lose it again.”

sampha tour 2023

Sampha brought songs from his 2023 album Lahai and one beloved deep cut for his second mini-concert for NPR's Tiny Desk . "Spirit 2.0," "Only," "Dancing Circles," and "Without," a song from his 2013 EP Dual were all performed with Sampha on piano and backed by a full band that included Ruthven , a future R&B artist signed to Jai Paul 's label Paul Institute. Watch the performance lacks in banter, it makes up for in the loving recreations of Sampha's transcendent soul music. Watch above.

2023 has been a banner year for NPR's marquee video series. They transformed some Twitter shade from Juvenile into one of the year's best pieces of live music content, brought in Amarrae and an 11-piece band , and gave vets like Babyface , Charlie Wilson , and Gwar the spotlight.

sampha tour 2023

At a Jeremih concert some years ago, the hype man of the momentarily unresponsive “Birthday Sex” singer tried to drum up enthusiasm in the audience for who he deemed “the R&B hook king!” The agitator wasn’t wrong — however lethargic Jeremih’s performance that night (he was touring with Teyana Taylor as his opener, who eventually booted him off his own shows and finished the run without him), the Chicagoan’s overtly sexual, slinky contributions to the genre are some of the finest after-hours, overshare crooning this side of The-Dream. And he was known for popping up in other people’s songs and managing a seductive lift or a saucy detour.

British singer, songwriter and producer Sampha could be called the art R&B hook king. Like Jeremih, he routinely appears on other artists’ tracks to deliver a sweetly sung chorus or add emotional texture, but, in contrast, he’s usually brought on to class up the joint rather than escort your mind promptly to the gutter. He built his reputation through intimate, almost tear-jerking collaborations with folks like Drake, Solange, Jessie Ware; more recently, you heard him on “Father Time,” one of the least strident moments on Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers . Further still, Sampha’s 2017 debut album Process — his only full-length release before this year — should be listed amongst the finest R&B albums of the last 15 years or so, right alongside Jeremih’s Late Nights .

Even more than Jeremih, who, besides some guest spots here and there, has been basically silent for the last five years, Sampha has been leaving audiences wanting more. As the years passed, Process has only become more culturally beloved, and yet, there was little indication when we’d be getting anything else from the artist, who is as much an ace behind the piano as he is the DJ mixers; his approach to songcraft is malleable and multimodal. Then, suddenly, late this summer, after finally dropping a single a couple of months prior, an album and tour were announced.

Due to the pent up anticipation, he easily sold out nearly the whole U.S. leg, including three consecutive nights at Webster Hall in New York City and later that week, two dates at the handsome Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C. At the second of the two D.C. shows, on a brisk Sunday evening, Sampha and his band didn’t skimp on bringing fans exactly what they wanted, playing for a healthy 90 minutes, excavating over half of the songs on Lahai , his October-released record, and several cuts from past releases (he has two EPs in addition to his two LPs).

The show expertly melded the analog and the electronic — all of the five band members onstage (including Sampha) were outfitted with both analog instruments and electronic ones, even the drummer, whose back faced the audience and seemed to be operating a traditional drum kit, had a computer board of some kind in front of him. As a result, the sounds were both crisp yet not too rigid, always in service of the bleeding humanity that pours from Sampha’s music. This also felt like a nod to Sampha’s origins in electronic music; one of his first major breakthroughs was providing vocals for half the songs on his compatriot SBTRKT’s self-titled 2011 dancey, synth-heavy record.

All night, Sampha and his capable bandmates worked to redefine and reimagine what R&B can sound like, supplying a vision of progressive or futurist R&B that nonetheless always felt naturalistic. The four supporting bandmates all sang back-up vocals, which was particularly effective during a late-in-show rendition of “Can’t Get Close,” from the artist’s 2013 EP Dual . They accented their bed of “oohs” with only finger snaps, which the audience joined in what felt like a time-honored R&B tradition. Silence hung (though never oppressively) at several moments, in between songs or during the performances, as people stood enraptured. It was a comfortingly serene mood for a Sunday.

The way Sampha and his band performs prompts one to really consider the rhythm part of the R&B equation. Especially on Lahai , drums and percussion are incredibly important and a dominant, driving force. There were two percussionists onstage, the aforementioned drummer with a kit and then Ruthven, who first came out as the opener to croon five decent enough songs, with a drum machine. The pair’s work together was extremely jazz-oriented, providing unstable, thrilling rhythmic direction to many of the songs. They memorably tore off in the back half of the paranoid Process track “Blood on Me,” tapping it into a frenzied tempest. You couldn’t miss the percussive obsession when, several songs in, all five musicians left their established places and convened around yet another collection of drums at stage left and passionately unleashed a blistering version of early career highlight “Without,” with Sampha somehow still singing as he engaged in a fantastically rehearsed group slam sesh.

In terms of the new record, “Suspended” and lead single “Spirit 2.0” were clear standouts live. The more celebratory mood of Lahai was certainly captured in the show, which saw Sampha command the stage in an almost startling fashion. For years this was someone commonly understood to be shy, recessive, even timid, but those impressions were dissolved on Sunday in favor of a consummate bandleader, dancing goofily, addressing the audience with gracious assurance and often caught lightly convulsing after a song seemingly involuntarily, either to exorcize energy or summon it.

Sampha: Tiny Desk Concert

  • "Spirit 2.0"
  • "Dancing Circles"
  • Sampha: lead vocals, keys, percussion
  • Blake Cascoe: drums, vocals, percussion
  • Elsas: keys, vocals, percussion
  • Rosetta: bass, vocals, percussion
  • Ruthven: percussion, vocals

The Mercury Prize-winning artist returns to Manchester for an in the round performance celebrating second album LAHAI

Immerse yourself in Sampha ’s signature sound as the multi-talented musician brings his acclaimed live show to Aviva Studios. Staged in the round, this very special performance will be his first headline Manchester show for nearly seven years and one of only two UK stops on his 2024 tour.

From UK breakout star to global icon, Sampha’s influence is felt throughout contemporary culture. Across a studied career, the south London songwriter and producer has released a host of era-defining records including his Mercury Prize-winning debut Process and his acclaimed 2023 follow up LAHAI . No stranger to collaboration, Sampha is also the inimitable voice called upon by some of the greatest artists of our times, from Kendrick Lamar to Stormzy, Drake to Solange, Frank Ocean to Alicia Keys.

Named after his paternal grandfather, LAHAI features contributions from some of Sampha’s closest friends, peers and collaborators including Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey, Ibeyi, Morgan Simpson, Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves and Kwake Bass. The album is a communal affair seeing Sampha explore the many ways in which we as humans connect to each other, and to something bigger than ourselves. If Process was an artist figuring out his own place in the world, engulfed in the shadows of grief and loss, LAHAI is an exercise in the radical acceptance and joy in the human condition, and the beauty in the journey itself.

We’re thrilled to welcome Sampha to Aviva Studios after a sell-out headline show at Albert Hall for MIF17. Join us in the soaring spaces of the Warehouse for a very special in-the-round performance from one of the UK’s most talented artists.

With support from Manchester writer and spoken word artist Isaiah Hull. His work explores and questions the extremities of self with image, word and soul on the page and the stage.
