The Saratoga Springs Utah Temple and an adjoining meetinghouse stand on an expansive 22.71-acre site near the western shores of Utah Lake at the end of tree-lined Founders Boulevard. The design reflects the quiet peace and inspiration of the surrounding mountains and wetlands. The entrance plaza is anchored by a tiered water feature surrounded by manicured gardens. A grassy lawn with meandering walkways fills the east side of the property.

Temple Facts

The Saratoga Springs Utah Temple was the eighteenth temple built in Utah and the fifth built in Utah County, following the Provo Utah Temple (1972), the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple (1996), the Payson Utah Temple (2015), and the Provo City Center Temple (2016).

Temple History

Announcement.

The Saratoga Springs Utah Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson on April 2, 2017, during the Sunday Morning Session of General Conference. At the time, there were 16 dedicated temples in Utah including the Bountiful Utah Temple , Brigham City Utah Temple , Draper Utah Temple , Logan Utah Temple , Jordan River Utah Temple , Manti Utah Temple , Monticello Utah Temple , Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple , Ogden Utah Temple , Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple , Payson Utah Temple , Provo City Center Temple , Provo Utah Temple, St. George Utah Temple , Salt Lake Temple and Vernal Utah Temple . The Cedar City Utah Temple was under construction. 1

Saratoga Springs was a recently established community in Utah, incorporated in 1997, located on the west side of Utah Lake in northern Utah County. Church membership in Saratoga Springs and the bordering communities of Lehi and Eagle Mountain had grown rapidly over the previous twenty years. There were seven stakes in Saratoga Springs, fourteen in Lehi, and eight in Eagle Mountain.

The Saratoga Springs Utah Temple is located within the Beacon Pointe development, west of Redwood Road and north of Meadow Side Drive. The Beacon Pointe Community Plan was approved by the City of Saratoga Springs on December 4, 2018, which featured the 22.71-acre temple site, referred to as a Special Project site in the document. It detailed various design guidelines including nighttime lighting and ornate fencing for the Special Project and its location on elevated property at the end of Founders Boulevard. 2

On September 5, 2019, an official rendering of the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple was released with the announcement of the groundbreaking ceremony.

Groundbreaking

On October 19, 2019, Elder Craig C. Christensen, president of the Utah Area, presided at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple. In his remarks, he spoke of an experience he had walking the temple site a month earlier: "I realized…how this particular temple will bless many individuals and families, including your children, your marriages, your families, and, especially, many of your ancestors." He added: "This is the place where your children and families will be protected from the evils that are ever present in the world today, and to make sacred covenants with the Lord." His words reached an audience of tens of thousands of members and guests gathered both at the temple site and at local meetinghouses. Following the formal proceedings, attendees were invited to take pictures and turn a shovelful of dirt to commemorate the historic occasion. 3

Open House and Dedication

An open house for the newly constructed Saratoga Springs Utah Temple began with a media day held on Monday, April 10, followed by private tours for invited guests from April 11–14, 2023. Public tours began on Saturday, April 15, and continued through Saturday, July 8, 2023, with no tours held on Sundays. A total of 587,809 guests toured the temple. President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency presided at the dedication on Sunday, August 13, 2023. The dedicatory sessions were broadcast to all units in the temple district at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. 4

Temple Design

The exterior of the temple is eight-inch-thick beige concrete made in Salt Lake County by Forterra. The spire is glass fiber reinforced concrete by Unlimited Design in Salt Lake City. The structure of the building is steel with concrete shear walls and concrete floor slabs. A decorative band that wraps around the exterior of the temple includes a mountain design, and Utah Lake wetlands and snowy egrets are represented on the metal panels. The egret is a logo of Saratoga Springs City.

Holdman Studios, with the assistance of the architectural team, designed the art glass and manufactured it at their studio in Lehi, Utah. The art glass references the Arts and Crafts movement and features objects found in nature. The design includes colors and forms of Utah Lake and the Wasatch Mountains in purples, blues, greens and golds.

The landscape architect is MGB+A. The temple site sits on a bluff overlooking Utah Lake and the Wasatch Front. Local plant species were selected for a natural landscape and sustainability. The elevated plaza facing east looks over the valley and is surrounded by evergreens and mountain shrubs.

The flooring is a combination of carpet, area rugs, porcelain tile, ceramic tile, glass tile and stone. The carpet patterns are carved on-site, and the carved patterns were designed by the architectural team and Gregg Johnson of Halfmoon Studio, located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Custom rugs in the bride’s room, entry and patron waiting areas were manufactured by Rugs International, headquartered in the United States, and manufactured in Guangdong, China.

The restroom floors have “rug-like” patterns that consist of multiple sizes and shapes of tiles. A custom pattern on the floor in the baptismal font was created by the architectural team and the Church designer. The interior of the font has TREND Mosaic Brillante glass tiles in various colors of blues, whites, creams and purples. The custom pattern of the natural stone floor in the lower font area underneath the oxen was also designed by the architectural team.

The decorative paint was designed by the architectural team and Church designer, with the assistance of Aaron Allen of Allen’s Commercial Arts LLC. Stylized flowers used throughout the temple represent various wildflowers found in the area including the iris, daisy and chrysanthemum. In the baptistry and other areas, stylized lines representing water and waves reference the nearby water in the Wasatch Mountain Range and Utah Lake.

The interior art glass design includes colors and forms of the natural surroundings near the temple in purples, blues, greens and golds. The art glass on the main level at the baptistry depicts snowy egrets in wetlands and grasses, reflecting the Saratoga Springs City logo. Utah Lake is represented in the wave and water patterns at the bottom of the art glass panels. Stylized gold shapes above the water represent silhouettes of birds, and the stylized mountains represent the Wasatch Mountains.

The decorative light fixtures are manufactured and designed through HB Lighting in New York. The bride’s room has Schonbek light fixtures manufactured with Swarovski Crystal from Austria.

The font railings were designed by Naylor Wentworth Lund in Salt Lake City, Utah. The font railings are made of antique brass, Sapele African mahogany and glass. The simple linework detail etched around the perimeter of the glass panels was pulled from the decorative paint design.

The millwork, doors and standard wood for the temple is a Sapele African Mahogany finished by Granite Mill. Some doors have interior art glass incorporated into their design. The style of the millwork is Art Deco.

The design of the decorative door hardware, manufactured by Luna Bronze in Provo, Utah, replicates architectural detailing found in the temple. The grass/wetland design found in the center portion of the hardware and the water design found at the bottom of the hardware is taken from the art glass.

The majority of the ceilings are painted gypsum. There are locations that have stepped ceilings to enhance the architecture in the space. Custom ceiling medallions featuring floral and foliage embellishments, manufactured with Allen’s Commercial Arts, are found throughout the temple.

Monday’s media day begins the temple’s open-to-the-public period prior to aug. 13 dedication.

One of the sealing rooms of the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah — The doors to the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple opened both literally and figuratively Monday, April 10 — literally as leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosted a media day at the start of the temple’s prolonged open-to-the-public period.

And the figurative opening came as the Church published a video and photos of interior and exterior images of the Saratoga Springs temple Monday on ChurchofJesusChrist.org . Much of the Saratoga Springs temple’s design styles and artwork draw heavily upon images and colors representing the nearby Utah Lake and Wasatch Mountains.

The video and photos provide a rare look inside a Latter-day Saint house of the Lord in the weeks leading up to its dedication. After that, the temple is accessible only to Church members participating in temple worship, instruction and ordinances for themselves and their deceased ancestors.

With 2.16 million Latter-day Saints residing in Utah, the state is home to 28 temples . Besides the one in Saratoga Springs, the Church has 14 dedicated and operating houses of the Lord, with three pioneer-era temples under extensive renovations and another 10 under construction.

Public access prior to dedication

Following Monday’s media day, the Saratoga Springs temple will host private tour sessions for invited guests Tuesday through Friday, April 11-14, with the scheduled 12-week public open house beginning Saturday, April 15, and running through July 8, excluding Sundays.

The Saratoga Springs Utah Temple will be dedicated on Sunday, Aug. 13 , by  President Henry B. Eyring , second counselor in the First Presidency, in sessions. The sessions will be broadcast to all units within the temple district.

The temple  was announced in April 2017  by then-Church President Thomas S. Monson. The three-story temple of approximately 87,000 square feet is located at 987 S. Ensign Drive, west of Redwood Road in the Beacon Pointe subdivision. An adjacent meetinghouse of 21,000 square feet was also built on the 22.7-acre site.

Elder Craig C. Christensen , a General Authority Seventy and then-president of the Utah Area, presided over  the groundbreaking of the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple  on Oct. 19, 2019, and offered the dedicatory prayer on the temple site.

The temple will be the Church’s 179th dedicated temple. The Church has 176 dedicated temples to date, following the Jan. 15 dedication of the San Juan Puerto Rico Temple. The next two scheduled for dedication before August are the Richmond Virginia Temple in early May and the Helena Montana Temple in mid-June.

Five more temples will follow in the two months after the Saratoga Springs temple’s August dedication.

Interior, exterior designs and elements

The temple’s exterior is eight-inch-thick beige concrete, with a band wrapping around the outside that includes a mountain design. The Utah Lake wetlands and snowy egrets are featured on metal panels on the exterior.

Like much of the interior features, the exterior art glass includes the lake and mountain colors of purples, blues, greens and golds. And with the temple sitting on a bluff overlooking Utah Lake and the Wasatch Front, an elevated plaza facing east offers a valley vista, with the plaza surrounded by evergreens and mountain shrubs. Local plant species offer sustainability and a natural feel to the landscape.

Inside the temple, various stylized wildflowers — including the iris, daisy and chrysanthemum — are represented throughout. In the baptistry and other areas of the temple, stylized lines representing water, waves and mountains reference the Wasatch Front and Utah Lake. Even the door hardware replicates the design details of the grass/wetlands features and the water lines.

The interior art glass includes the same colors and forms, with the glass in the baptistry depicting egrets in wetlands and grasses. Utah Lake is represented in the bottom wave and water patterns, stylized gold shapes suggest the silhouettes of birds, with the mountains atop the glass panels denoting the Wasatch Front.

Utah’s newest Latter-day Saint temple will open to public tours beginning this weekend.

The Saratoga Springs Temple, 987 S. Ensign Drive, will host private tours for invited guests Tuesday through Friday before opening to the public on Saturday. Tours will be conducted Mondays through Saturdays from April 15 through July 8.

According to a Monday news release , President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the governing First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is scheduled to dedicate the temple Aug. 13.

Tours start at 9 a.m.; the last tour each day begins at 7:55 p.m. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended. Tickets are available online. Tours include a brief video overview, followed by a short walking tour. Comfortable shoes and modest dress are recommended. The tour is wheelchair accessible.

The temple was announced by then-church President Thomas S. Monson in April 2017; ground was broken in October 2019. The “design cues and color palette” of the single-spired, Angel Moroni-topped, three-story, 87,000-square-foot building, the release noted, “are inspired by the blues, purples, golds and greens of surrounding flora and fauna, such as wildflowers, marsh grass, reeds and the snowy egrets.”

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Panels decorate the exterior of the Saratoga Springs depicting scenes from nearby Utah Lake.

The temple includes everything from imported mahogany and marble to custom art-glass windows and crystal chandeliers, all of which are “designed to enhance the experience for those who come to worship in this holy place.”

“Because we’re building his house, we strive to give our … very best craftsmanship, the very best materials that we can,” general authority Seventy Kevin R. Duncan, the Temple Department’s executive director, explained in the release . “It’s not ostentatious. It’s simplistic beauty that elevates one’s vision toward Christ.”

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) A sealing room in the Saratoga Springs Temple.

Latter-day Saints consider a temple to be a House of the Lord, where Jesus Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through ordinances that unite families for eternity. After it is dedicated, only faithful members of the church are allowed to enter.

When it begins operations in August, the Saratoga Springs Temple will be the fifth operating temple in Utah County, joining two in Provo and one each in American Fork and Payson. Two others are planned, in Lindon and Orem.

(The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Some of the doors, made of Sapele African Mahogany in the Saratoga Springs Temple, feature art glass and hardware designs of wetland grass and water representing nearby Utah Lake.

Currently, 14 temples are operating in the Utah — Bountiful, Brigham City, Cedar City, Draper, Jordan River (South Jordan), Logan, Monticello, Mount Timpanogos (American Fork), Ogden, Oquirrh Mountain (South Jordan), Payson, Provo, Provo City Center and Vernal.

The historic Salt Lake , Manti and St. George temples are closed while undergoing renovation.

Utah has a total of 28 existing or planned temples. That number worldwide, according to the church , now stands at 315.

What are the benefits of owning vs. renting?

Owning a home can help you build equity, offers tax deductions and fixed monthly payments, and gives you a sense of permanence. When you rent, your lease sets the price, your place isn’t really yours, and there are no tax benefits or financial freedom. There are many benefits to owning a home that you can’t get with renting.

Virtual Tour – Jewish Museum of New York City – The Hare With Amber Eyes

March 30, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

White rabbit with amber eyes

Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs is delighted to invite you to a private, virtual tour of The Hare with Amber Eyes exhibit at The Jewish Museum in New York City, on Wednesday, March 30 at 7 p.m. This fascinating exhibit tells the story of the Ephrussi family which was the subject of The New York Times bestseller of the same name, written by Edmund de Waal.

The hour-long program will conclude with an opportunity for questions and answers.

This is a limited event. For reservations, contact the President on the Contact Us page or call the Office.

The tour is without charge and open to the entire community; however, donations are encouraged to support future cultural events at Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Community Center. This program is sponsored by a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeast New York.

The virtual tour of The Hare with Amber Eyes explores the family’s rise to prominence and splendor in the first half of the 19th century, followed by a focus on the prolific collector and art historian, Charles Ephrussi, to the inter-war years, and finally, World War II, when the family lost its fortune and collection to Nazi looting. Diller Scofidio + Renfro, worked closely with de Waal and the Jewish Museum, to create an interpretive installation using family and loaned artifacts that trace the turbulent history of their movements through place and time. The architecturally distinguished homes the Ephrussi family inhabited over the course of generations are evoked within the domestic setting of the Jewish Museum and brought to life through excerpts from de Waal’s memoir.

The exhibition brings together pieces from the Ephrussi’s collections to examine the ways in which objects can function as storytellers, symbols of resilience, and monuments of a family legacy, including artworks by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Berthe Morisot, Claude Monet, Gustave Moreau and Auguste Renoir; decorative objects; and family photos and ephemera from their lives across four continents. At the exhibition’s centerpiece is the extraordinary collection of Japanese netsuke, miniature carved sculptures of the Edo Period (17th-19th centuries), hidden by a maid from German officials in her mattress during World War II, and later returned to the family after the war. The collection of netsuke has since been handed down to subsequent generations, serving as a connection between the past and the present. The most recent member of the family to inherit the collection, author and ceramicist Edmund de Waal, drew from them the inspiration for his memoir The Hare with Amber Eyes , continuing the family’s storied legacy of artistic and cultural pursuits.

The Hare with Amber Eyes traces the Ephrussi family’s progression, beginning with Charles Joachim Ephrussi (1793-1864), who built a vast fortune through grain distribution and the oil industry in Odessa. His descendants continued to grow the family’s wealth and influence as financiers, becoming peers of the Rothschild family, and expanding their presence across the major capitals of Europe. In Vienna, Charles’s son Ignace (1829-1899) founded the Ephrussi & Co. bank, eventually receiving the noble title of Knight (Ritter). The Ephrussis achieved high social status as leading participants in the imperial city’s flourishing economic and architectural sectors and were known for their cultural and intellectual contributions. Reflecting their success, the family commissioned the Palais Ephrussi, a noble residence on the famed Ringstrasse. The family owned castles and estates throughout Europe, including the famous Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on the French Riviera.

The Ephrussis became a major target as anti-semitisim grew in the late 19th and 20th centuries. During World War II, the family found refuge in exile, making their way to England, America, and Mexico. They lost their vast fortune and priceless art collection to the Nazis and were unable to recover their wealth and most of their property in the aftermath of the war. One exception was the collection of netsuke, featured prominently in this exhibition.

The Hare with Amber Eyes , has won many literary honors, including the RSL Ondaatje Prize and the Costa Biography Award, and has been translated into over 30 languages. In 2015, de Waal was awarded the prestigious Windham-Campbell Prize for Non-Fiction by Yale University. The book was chosen as the Independent Bookshop Week’s Book of the Decade in 2016.

Subscriber only, high school baseball: saratoga handles troy, with shen rematch on-deck, blue streaks respond from streak snapping loss, with explosive fifth inning to beat flying horses on senior night; will meet with plainsmen, friday.

The Saratoga Springs High School baseball team defeated Troy, 7-2, at East Side Rec Park, in Saratoga Springs, on Tuesday, April 24, 2024. (DREW WEMPLE - MEDIANEWS GROUP).

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — There’s always a different vibe to senior night and more energy, emanating from the dugout. As if the Saratoga Springs Blue Streaks baseball team needed more reason to get up for the affair, to honor its 10 seniors, the group was looking to bounce back from a loss the night before, which snapped a streak of seven straight wins.

“At the end of the game (Tuesday), I said, ‘We can’t change the scoreboard.’ So, our attitude is: How can we respond? What we do tomorrow, really is going to define our character,” Saratoga Springs head coach Andrew Cuthbertson said, postgame, on Wednesday, “Are we going to feel sorry for ourselves, or, are we going to pick it up and get back to work? So today, we got back to work and got back in the win column.”

“This group is the type of group to get punched in the face and battle back right away,” senior first-baseman Michael Mack added. “No one’s gonna sit here and hang their head, no one is gonna cry about it in the dugout; everyone comes to play, you play to win. If we lose, we come back the next day and we get the win.”

The Saratoga Springs High School baseball team defeated Troy, 7-2,...

The Blue Streaks rallied back for a 7-2, victory against Troy on Wednesday night at East Side Recreation Park, and while it may not have been pretty to start, a win is a win, and on senior night, it simply means more.

Yet not only were the seniors honored but they helped lead the way.

“The guys did a good job of staying composed and battling back. John Panarese came in and did a nice job in innings three, four, and five and then finishing up a Louis Betit; he did a nice job as well, in six and seven. And then our hitters came alive,” Cuthbertson said. “(Patrick) McKinley had a good game, Cameron Rhude had a good game, Michael Mack had a big hit. So, it was senior night, and our seniors getting to play.”

“This definitely means a lot. I’ve played with some of these guys since I was eight years old and it means a lot to just have one, final night, recognizing all of us playing together and what we’ve accomplished throughout the years,” Mack remarked.

Slightly more than 24 hours prior, the Blue Streaks had outhit the Ballston Spa Scotties, 8-3, and led 3-2 into the final frame before losing on a walk-off, hit-by-pitch. Starting Wednesday’s matchup, the Blue Streaks allowed the Flying Horses to bring two across, via an error and another, hit-by-pitch.

Hence, four consecutive unearned runs yielded across two games.

Saratoga Springs cut the lead in half with an RBI single from Rhude in the bottom of the first, before seeing senior Patrick Messineo bounce back with a one-two-three top of the second, to finish his night.

Panarese entered in his place, down 2-1, and after retiring the Flying Horses in order in the top of the third and the Blue Streaks going down in order in the bottom half of the frame, and got into trouble in the top of the fourth.

Back-to-back singles from Troy’s Tyler Dickenson and Jason Bradley, preceded by a walk from Ethan Paul, loaded the bases on Panarese and Saratoga Springs, with one out. A strikeout and ground ball fielder’s choice got the home club out of the inning unscathed.

“We talked a little bit about performing under pressure and, obviously, that’s a pressure situation, but just kind of winning, pitch-by-pitch and I think that was the attitude that got us out of that jam,” Cuthbertson said. “Just executing, throwing strikes and executing on defense.”

“We just have a bunch of dogs on our team and that gives us a ton of momentum coming into the dugout. Everybody wants to hit, everyone’s fired up, everyone’s got adrenaline flowing through them; everyone just wants to win the game,” Mack said. “So, it was big to get out of that inning.”

Saratoga Springs capitalized, tying the game with a dropped pop-fly in the bottom of the fourth, which scored senior Joshua Delnicki from second. After a smoother top half of the fifth, with Panarese inducing two strikeouts and a two-pitch groundout, Saratoga Springs brought across five more runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by RBI singles from Mack, Rhude, and McKinley, plus a two-out, double from senior Patrick Temple, to plate Rhude.

With a new, 7-2 lead and Panarese in line for the win, Betit closed it out with two, scoreless innings and four strikeouts, to get the Blue Streaks a new win streak going.

The defending Section 2 Class AA runner-ups started the season with back-to-back losses, also on back-to-back days, to Mechanicville and Niskayuna, both by 3-2 scores. After that, it was seven wins in 14 days, including outings of 10 runs or more in four of such victories.

“We kind of got that out of our system and started playing ball. But, I keep telling these guys, we got to play our best ball in the middle of May, so, we’re continuing to get better every time,” Cuthbertson said.

“Those are definitely two, fluke losses. We win those games, nine times out of 10,” Mack added. “This is a great group of guys that everyone comes to play hard, everyone wants to win; it’s Saratoga baseball, that’s the backbone of it.”

While the streak may be gone, the Blue Streaks should still be tabbed as the ‘hot team’ in Suburban Council, having won eight of the past nine games. However, everything resets with the Blue Streaks’ next opponent on the horizon, rival Shenendehowa (5-2), for a 2023 Sectional Championship rematch.

The Plainsmen won last year’s winner-take-all matchup, 3-1, at Joe Bruno Stadium, to deny the Blue Streaks back-to-back titles and earn a trip to NYSPHSAA Class AA Regionals.

“I think anytime we play Shen it’s a good matchup. They get up for us and we get up for them. We try not to buy into too much of that. We want to try to keep our emotions under check and perform, regardless of who we’re playing,” Cuthbertson said. “Suburban Council is a tough schedule. We got Shen, Bethlehem, and then Shaker the next three games and then throw Albany Academy in there as a non-league, as well. But, I just love playing in this league because you get good competition and it’s a dogfight every day and the kids got to earn it.”

“Last year, losing to Shen was a big one. We were the better team. Everybody’s coming in hungry to win this game. There’s not a single guy on this team that does not want to beat Shen and I think everyone’s gonna come hungry and want to win,” Mack said. “It’ll be a big game.”

The first pitch Friday is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., at Shenendehowa.
