Visa statistics: Schengen States issue 2.4 million visas for short stays in 2021

Launch of the Visa Information System (VIS)

Figures published by the European Commission show that the consulates of the EU countries and Schengen Associated Countries received around 3 million applications for short-stay visas in 2021. This is the same number as in 2020 but considerably lower than in 2019 - 17 million. The global travel restrictions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 continued to drastically depress the demand for Schengen visas worldwide. As a result, the level of visa operations stayed low in 2021: 2.4 million visa issued (2.5 million visa issued in 2020).

The ranking of largest source countries remained almost unchanged, but at very low levels. Numbers of visa applications of the top five applicant countries:

  • Russia: 654 000 in 2020; 536 241 in 2021
  • China: 207 000 in 2020; 27 458 in 2021 (almost a 90% decrease)
  • Turkey: 229 000 in 2020; 271 997 in 2021
  • India: 168 000 in 2020; 130 000 in 2021
  • Morocco: 180 000 in 2020; 157 000 in 2021

The average percentage of visa applications that were refused edged up slightly in 2021 in certain countries, with some variation: 0.3 % (2020) vs. 1.1 % (2021)  in Belarus, 1.2% (2020) vs. 10.8 % (2021) in Botswana and 2.6% (2020) vs. 3.2 % (2021) in Russia.

Worldwide, 13.4% of all visa applications were refused , the same percentage as in 2020. 1.7 million or 71 % of the 2.4 million visas issued in 2021 allow for multiple entries into the Schengen area, a share that despite the overall decline in the numbers of applications remained stable compared to the share in previous years.

In addition to the 2.4 million visas issued abroad, in 2021 the Schengen States also issued 69 401 uniform visas directly at the external borders.

Schengen Visa Acceptance Rate by Country in 2024

What are the schengen visa acceptance rates.

Before going into individual countries, it’s essential to understand that acceptance rates can fluctuate based on numerous factors, including global political scenarios, economic ties, bilateral agreements, and the number of previous overstays or violations recorded from particular nationalities.

The Schengen Visa Acceptance Rate by Country [2022 Data]

Which schengen country has the highest visa approval rate.

The Schengen country with the highest visa approval rate is Iceland . Of all the Schengen visa applications it received, 98.1% were approved, making it the state with the most favorable acceptance rate.

It’s worth noting that while Iceland boasts the highest percentage of visa approvals, the actual number of applications it receives is relatively low compared to some of the larger Schengen countries.

However, its high approval rate indicates a more lenient or efficient visa evaluation process.

Which Is the Hardest Country to Get a Schengen Visa?

On the flip side, the data suggests that Malta is the most challenging Schengen country to secure a visa from, with an acceptance rate of just 63.6% .

This is the lowest approval percentage among all the countries listed. This lower rate could be attributed to various reasons, including strict application evaluations, specific requirements, or a high number of incomplete or incorrectly filled applications.

Potential applicants targeting Malta may need to be particularly meticulous with their submissions and ensure they meet all the required criteria.

What Are The Factors Influencing Acceptance Rates?

Several factors can influence Schengen visa acceptance rates:

  • Tourism Push : Countries eager to revive their tourism sectors may be more lenient in their visa approvals, aiming to attract higher numbers of tourists.
  • Economic Ties : Nations with strong economic and trade ties to other countries may have higher acceptance rates to facilitate business travels.
  • Security Concerns : Countries might tighten their visa issuance criteria based on security assessments and international relations.
  • Previous Overstays or Violations : Countries with higher instances of visa violations or overstays from certain nationalities might adjust their acceptance rates accordingly.

5 Tips for a Successful Schengen Visa Application

Regardless of acceptance rates, applicants can take certain steps to ensure a higher chance of visa approval:

  • Complete Documentation : Ensure all required documents are provided, from flight itineraries to accommodation bookings.
  • Clear Purpose : Clearly state the purpose of your visit, whether tourism, business, or family visit.
  • Financial Stability : Demonstrate that you have enough funds to sustain your trip without violating visa conditions.
  • Travel Insurance : Having comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory and demonstrates preparedness.
  • Consistency : Ensure all the information provided is consistent across documents to avoid suspicion or rejection.

What Are the Schengen Visa Types?

The Schengen visa is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Based on the intent of travel, several visa types cater to different categories of travelers. Here’s a breakdown:

Tourist Visa (Type C)

  • Purpose: For leisure travel and tourism.
  • Validity: Short-stay, usually valid for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Business Visa (Type C)

  • Purpose: For business meetings, conferences, and other professional engagements.
  • Validity: Similar to the tourist visa, generally valid for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

Transit Visa (Type A)

  • Purpose: For travelers passing through the Schengen Area to reach a non-Schengen destination.
  • Validity: Very short-term, usually up to 5 days.

Student Visa (Type D)

  • Purpose: For academic purposes, including short courses and long-term studies.
  • Validity: Can vary, usually aligns with the duration of the study program.

Work Visa (Type D)

  • Purpose: For employment within a Schengen country.
  • Validity: Generally issued for the length of the employment contract, but can vary.

Family Reunion Visa (Type D)

  • Purpose: For joining a family member residing in a Schengen country.
  • Validity: Can vary widely depending on individual circumstances and the host country’s regulations.

Official Visit Visa

  • Purpose: For official state visits.
  • Validity: Duration generally aligns with the official engagements, but can vary.

Cultural, Sports, Film Crew or Religious Visa (Type C)

  • Purpose: For individuals participating in cultural, sports, or religious events, or film productions.
  • Validity: Typically up to 90 days within a 180-day period, but can be adjusted based on the event duration.

Long-Term Visa (Type D)

  • Purpose: For stays exceeding 90 days, such as permanent relocation.
  • Validity: Issued for the specific period of intended long-term stay.

Each visa type has its documentation requirements, and acceptance rates can fluctuate based on the applicant’s background and the supporting evidence provided.

What Are The Country-Specific Requirements?

Though the Schengen zone operates under a shared visa policy, nuances exist in the application process for each member country:

  • Documentation Variance : Some countries might demand additional documents. For instance, while France might insist on a detailed itinerary, Germany might emphasize health insurance coverage.
  • Interview Procedures : The rigor and nature of the interview can vary. Some countries might have a more thorough scrutiny process, focusing on different aspects of an applicant’s background.
  • Local Contacts : Having a local contact, like a sponsor or inviter, can sometimes be a deciding factor. Certain countries might prioritize applications where a credible local resident vouches for the visitor
  • Financial Proof : The amount and type of financial proof required can differ. Some countries might be strict about bank statements’ duration and the amount shown.

When applying, it’s paramount to thoroughly research the chosen country’s specific requirements to ensure a smooth application process.

How To appeal a Rejection

Facing a Schengen visa rejection can be disheartening. However, it’s not the end of the road:

  • Understanding the Reason : Each rejection should come with a detailed reason. It’s crucial to understand this to address the specific issue in an appeal or future application.
  • The Appeal Process : Applicants generally have a limited window (often 3 weeks) to appeal a visa denial. This involves submitting a letter detailing why the decision should be reconsidered, accompanied by any additional supporting documents.
  • Reapplication : Instead of appealing, some opt to reapply, addressing the issues highlighted in the rejection. This can sometimes be faster than awaiting an appeal decision.
  • Seek Expert Help : Consulting with visa experts or agencies can provide clarity. They can guide on whether to appeal, reapply, or even wait for a while before attempting again.
  • Maintain Positivity : It’s essential to understand that rejections can sometimes be due to simple omissions or oversights. Addressing these methodically can lead to a successful application in the future.

How Frequently Is the Schengen Visa Acceptance Rate Updated?

Schengen visa acceptance rates are typically updated and reported annually. These reports provide statistics on visa applications, including the number of visas issued and the rate of acceptance or rejection.

  • Source of Data : The data is usually compiled by the individual Schengen countries and may be aggregated by the European Commission or other EU institutions.
  • Public Availability : The updated acceptance rates are generally made available to the public through publications, offering insights into visa trends and patterns.

Do Frequent Travelers Have a Higher Chance of Visa Approval?

The impact of travel history on Schengen visa approval is a common query:

  • Positive Impact of Travel History : Frequent travelers with a history of previous international travel, especially to Schengen or other EU countries, often have a higher chance of visa approval. This is because a strong travel history can demonstrate reliability and compliance with visa regulations.
  • Consistent Compliance is Key : It’s important that frequent travelers have a history of complying with visa rules, such as not overstaying or violating the conditions of their previous visas.
  • Individual Assessment : However, each visa application is assessed on its own merits, and frequent travel alone does not guarantee visa approval.

Is the Visa Fee Refunded in Case of a Rejection?

Generally, the Schengen visa application fee is non-refundable. This means that if your visa application is rejected, the fee you paid for processing the application will not be returned.

  • Fee Covers Processing Costs : The visa fee is primarily for processing the application and is incurred regardless of the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can i apply to a different schengen country if my visa application is rejected by one member state.

Yes, you can apply to a different Schengen country after facing a rejection. However, it’s advisable to address the reasons for the initial rejection before submitting a new application.

Does having a Schengen visa guarantee entry into all Schengen countries?

Not necessarily. While a Schengen visa allows you to travel to all member states, the final decision for entry lies with the border control authorities of the respective country you’re entering.

How long should I wait before reapplying after a visa rejection?

There’s no mandated waiting period, but it’s recommended to wait long enough to address the reasons for your initial rejection comprehensively.

Is the visa acceptance rate influenced by the duration of the stay requested?

Acceptance rates are typically not categorized by the duration of stay in the published data. However, individual consulates might have internal data on this.

How do events like international conferences or sports events influence acceptance rates?

Large international events can sometimes result in a temporary surge in visa applications and might slightly affect the acceptance rates, especially if the hosting country prioritizes such events.

Can I extend my Schengen visa once I'm in the Schengen Area?

It’s generally difficult to extend a Schengen visa unless there are compelling reasons like force majeure, humanitarian reasons, or serious personal reasons.

How does the visa acceptance rate affect the processing time of applications?

The acceptance rate itself doesn’t directly impact processing times. However, high demand or a surge in applications might lead to extended processing durations.

In 2021, Sweden, Norway, France and Denmark were said to turn down the highest number of visa applications from third-country citizens. Applicants applying to the embassies and consulates of these four countries were more likely to get rejected as compared to any other country in the Schengen area, as per the Schengen Visa Statistics 2021.

France, Germany and Spain received the highest number of applications in 2021.The average rejection rate for all Schengen states in 2021 was 13.4% of the total 2,926,104 applications filed from across the world. Against this, Sweden had the highest rejection rate, declining 30.6% of the 22,260 visa applications. Norway came second with 26.2% of 9,895 visa applications rejected. France turned down 21.1 % of the 652,331 applications they received. Denmark rejected 21.1% of the 26,469 applications. Belgium turned down 20.4% of 50,796 applications, whereas Malta 16.2% of 4,295 visa requests in 2021.

How did Schengen visa applications from India perform?

Sweden rejected 833 or 42.26% of 1,974 visa applications from India in 2021, whereas Norway turned down 30.69%. France issued 25,482 visas and turned down 11,959 applications during the same year. Switzerland rejected 21% of applications and issued 15,551 visas to Indian travellers last year. The Spanish consulate in Delhi saw more rejections at 30.20% as compared to Mumbai which had 15.08% of its applications rejected.

Best countries for Schengen visa?

The countries with the lowest rejection rates are Luxembourg (1.2 per cent), Slovakia (2.7 per cent), Lithuania (2.8 per cent), the Czech Republic (3.3 per cent), and Latvia (3.5 per cent).

The African continent seems to be at the receiving end of most rejections. Citizens of Guinea Bissau had 53% of the Schengen visa applications turned down, the Sengalese 52.2% and Nigerians 51%.

These statistics speak of the situation in 2021. They may or may not represent the realities of cross-border travel at the moment. The consensus is that most embassies and consulates in India are creaking under the weight of applications. Here’s a handy guide on how bad the situation i s and what you can do about it.

Tourism in Austria remains far below pre-pandemic levels

This means that the number of nights spent dropped by 18.32 million compared to 2020 and fell back to the 1970 levels.

The decline of Austrian tourism in 2021 is mostly attributed to closures in the first four months of the year and the month of November.

Schengen visa: India among 5 countries with highest rejection rate in 2022. Here's why your visa can be denied

The schengen visa application process saw high rejection rates in 2022, with algerian nationals having the highest rate at 45.8%. india and turkey followed with 18% and 15.2% respectively..

Anyone who is an Indian national and has a valid Indian passport can apply for Schengen visa. (REUTERS)

In 2022, the Schengen visa application process witnessed a significant number of rejections, and statistics shed light on the countries with the highest refusal rates. Topping the list were Algerian nationals, with a staggering 179,409 visa applications being denied. This accounted for an alarming rejection rate of 45.8 percent. The reasons behind such a high number of refusals are multifaceted and can vary on a case-by-case basis.

Following closely behind Algeria were applicants from India and Turkey, with 121,188 and 120,876 visa rejections, respectively. These figures corresponded to rejection rates of 18 percent and 15.2 percent, indicating a substantial number of individuals facing visa denial, schengenvisainfo reports.

It is important to note that the rejection rates for India and Turkey were considerably lower compared to Algeria, but the absolute numbers of rejections were still significant.

Morocco and Russia also experienced significant numbers of visa application rejections, with 119,346 and 68,753 rejections respectively. The rejection rates for uniform visas were 15.5% for Morocco and 28.2% for Russia. Tunisia followed closely with a rejection rate of 29.1% and 48,909 total visa application rejections. The United Arab Emirates ranked next with 42,105 rejections. Nigeria, Iran, and Egypt also faced high numbers of visa denials, with approximately 39,189, 33,679, and 31,271 applications rejected, respectively.

When Schengen visas are rejected?

The Schengen area, encompassing several European countries, operates under a common visa policy, which allows foreign nationals to travel freely within the area once granted a Schengen visa. However, obtaining such a visa can be a challenging process, requiring applicants to meet specific criteria and provide extensive documentation.

The reasons for visa rejections can be diverse and include factors such as insufficient supporting documents, doubts regarding the purpose of travel, concerns about the applicant's financial stability, or a lack of confidence in the applicant's intent to return to their home country. Additionally, security concerns and potential risks associated with illegal immigration may also contribute to the high refusal rates.

Thailand leads push for six-nation Schengen-like visa to lure tourists

Travel & tourism.

Schengen-type visa for Thailand, Malaysia, CLMV countries

20231210 thailand

Thailand is steering an initiative for a joint-visa program with countries that together hosted about 70 million tourists last year as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin ramps up initiatives to attract more long-haul and high-spending travelers.

Get exclusive content with Gulf News WhatsApp channel

Srettha "- who's pledged to elevate Thailand's status as a tourism hotspot into an aviation and logistics hub "- has discussed the Schengen-type visa idea with his counterparts in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam in recent months. The facility is meant to ensure seamless mobility for travellers among the six neighbouring countries.

With most leaders positively responding to the single-visa concept, tourism-reliant Thailand aims to generate more revenue per traveler and cushion its economy from headwinds such as sluggish exports and weak global demand that's hurt its manufacturing industry.

The six Southeast Asian nations reported a combined 70 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, according to official data. Thailand and Malaysia accounted for more than half of the tally, generating about $48 billion in tourism revenue.

The single-visa is the most-ambitious among Srettha's lineup of tourism initiatives but targeted for the long-term. The industry has served the country well, accounting for about 20 per cent of total jobs and making up about 12 per cent to the nation's $500 billion economy. Barring the pandemic years, tourism has flourished and provided a cushion against a slump in manufacturing and exports, the traditional bulwarks of the economy.

The tourism industry is upbeat, with Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, a former president of the Thai Hotels Association, saying "a common visa could entice long-haul travelers to make an easier decision." The visa validity will need to be extended to 90 days from the usual 30-day period to make it attractive, she said.

Srettha's administration has set a goal of attracting 80 million tourists by 2027. And since taking power about seven months ago, his government has signed a reciprocal visa waiver deal with China "- Thailand's largest market for tourists "- and offered temporary visa waivers for travelers from India, Taiwan and Kazakhstan. It's also mulling a plan to open casinos inside large entertainment complexes and event-based tourism will help the country generate more revenue.

Schengen-type visa

If done right, the benefits of visa-free travel won't be confined to tourism alone as ease of travel would be a boon for business travelers and trade, according to Bill Barnett, managing director of hospitality and property consultancy C9 Hotelworks.

But a Schengen-type visa, which allows free travel around the border-free zone within Europe, may be an uphill task given Asean's poor track record in expediting multilateral policy framework and the group's standing as a talk shop.

"Country by country seems to be the best way to do it," Barnett said. "Bilateral agreements, where governments are leading the way for this type of thing, make a lot of sense as they are looking outward and not inward."

For a joint visa scheme, approvals have to be coordinated and the absence of standard immigration criteria among participating nations unlike the European Union can pose challenges, according to Thitinan Pongsudhirak, professor at Chulalongkorn University's political science faculty. Asean, as a grouping is a divided body with a poor immigration record, he said.

With Srettha being neophyte in politics, he may lack the clout to push through the visa proposal, Thitinan said.

"All the various things he's been trying to do, I see it as picking low-hanging fruits and picking fruits off the ground," Thitinan said."Sometimes fruits on the ground are rotten."

Romania and Bulgaria partially joined Europe’s ID-check-free travel zone on Sunday, marking a new step in the two countries’ integration with the European Union.

After years of negotiations to join the Schengen Area , there is now free access for travelers arriving by air or sea from both countries. However, land border checks will remain in place due to opposition primarily from Austria, which has long blocked their bid over illegal migration concerns.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the change as a “huge success for both countries” and a “historic moment” for what is the world’s largest free travel zone.

The Schengen Area was established in 1985. Before Bulgaria and Romania’s admission, Schengen consisted of 23 of the 27 EU member countries, along with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Around 3.5 million people cross an internal border each day.

Austria vetoed Romania and Bulgaria’s admission into the Schengen zone at the end of 2022 but allowed Croatia full accession. Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU in 2007 and Croatia in 2013.

Siegfried Muresan, a Romanian member of the European Parliament, told the Associated Press that it is “an important first step” that will benefit millions of travelers annually.

“Bulgaria and Romania have been fulfilling all criteria for joining the Schengen Area for years — we are entitled to join with the terrestrial border as well,” he said, adding that it “will offer additional arguments to the last EU member state that has been vetoing the full accession.”

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu called it a “well-deserved achievement” for Romania that he said will benefit citizens who can travel more easily and will bolster the economy.

“We have a clear and firmly assumed government plan for full accession to the Schengen Area by the end of the year,” he said.

The EU’s executive branch, the European Commission, has said for more than a decade that Romania and Bulgaria both meet the technical criteria for full accession, which requires unanimous support from their partners. Both countries have agreed to implement random security screening at airports and maritime borders to combat illegal migration and cross-border crime.

“Bulgaria’s full accession to Schengen will happen by the end of 2024,” Kalin Stoyanov, Bulgaria’s interior minister, told reporters on Sunday. “We showed and continue to show to illegal migrants that they should not take the road to Europe through Bulgaria.”

EU countries wrestle with a proposed ban on Russian tourists

Northern European Union countries are calling for a broad ban on tourist visas for Russian citizens, but Germany, among other EU members, demurs.

The lifting of border control is expected to facilitate operations at Bulgaria’s four international airports, which in 2023 saw nearly 11 million passengers, according to official data.

The airport in the capital, Sofia, serves as the biggest hub for Schengen flights, which constitute 70% of all flights, airport representatives said.

While the eased regulations are expected to positively impact the tourism sector, members of the European Parliament have voiced concerns about long queues at the EU’s land borders and the impact it can have on trade in the bloc’s single market, as well as the health and safety of drivers.

Truck drivers are frequently stuck in kilometers-long queues at the borders of both Romania and Bulgaria. The Union of International Carriers in Bulgaria estimates delays cost the sector tens of millions of euros each year.
