Seminole State College named semifinalist for prestigious 2025 Aspen Prize

Seminole state is ranked in the top 20 community colleges considered for the $1 million national prize that recognizes excellence in student outcomes, tuesday, may 7, 2024 written by: seminole state staff.

The Aspen Institute named Seminole State College of Florida a semifinalist for the 2025 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The $1 million award is the nation's signature recognition of high achievement and performance among community colleges. The institutions selected for this honor stand out among more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide as having high and improving levels of student success, as well as equitable outcomes for Black and Hispanic students and those from lower-income backgrounds.

"Based on strong and improving graduation, transfer and workforce outcomes, Seminole State is in the running for the 2025 Aspen Prize,” said Dr. Georgia L. Lorenz, president of Seminole State College. “This distinguished recognition serves as evidence of the excellent outcomes produced every day by our dedicated faculty and staff. At Seminole State we know that everyone is key to student success, and I am honored to work alongside the College team on behalf of our students and this community.”

Awarded every two years, the Aspen Prize honors colleges with outstanding performance in six critical areas: teaching and learning, certificate and degree completion, transfer and bachelor’s attainment, workforce success, broad access to the college and its offerings, and equitable outcomes for students of color and students from low-income backgrounds. The winner will be announced in the spring of 2025.

Joshua Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, congratulated the semifinalists. “Each of these colleges has demonstrated a sustained commitment to moving beyond enrollment and retention as the markers of student success to defining their success by whether the education they provide changes lives,” Wyner said. “These colleges understand that enrollment and graduation matter most when tied tightly to post-graduation success in transferring for a bachelor’s degree and in securing fulfilling, good-paying jobs and careers.”

The semifinalists are (in alphabetical order):

  • Southwest Wisconsin Technical College
  • State Technical College of Missouri
  • Trinidad State College
  • Union College of Union County, NJ

The Aspen Prize selection process began in October 2023, when Aspen invited 150 community colleges to apply, based on data showing strong, improving, and equitable student outcomes in key areas such as retention, completion, and transfer. One hundred and eighteen colleges applied, and their applications went to a diverse selection committee of 18 higher education experts who assessed each application based on extensive data and narrative answers to questions. Following interviews with leadership teams from applicants receiving top scores, 20 semifinalists were selected. In the coming weeks, the committee will continue its review and narrow the field to 10 finalists, which will be announced in June. For the second year in a row, the Bob Graham Distinguished Service Award will call Polk State College its home.

Blessen Jacob, Program Coordinator for Student Activities for the Student Activities & Leadership Office (SALO), was presented with the honor for 2024. Jacob was recognized at the annual Florida College System Student Government Association (SGA) Conference held April 19 and 20.

“To be nominated is an honor in itself,” Jacob said. “I was not expecting it. It really is an honor given what the award means.”

The award annually goes to individuals who exhibit outstanding leadership and service to their campus community. Last year, SGA Advisor Chris Ly was presented with the honor. In 2023, student Joshua Starr also won the Bob Graham Distinguished Student Service Award.

“It shows there’s purpose behind everything we’re doing,” Jacob said. “For student life and student government, we’re making sure students have a voice. We have goals for our department. Winning these awards gives us confirmation that we’ve achieved our goals.”

Jacob has been a mainstay in the SALO Department – even prior to being hired. The SGA Vice President for the Lakeland Campus as a student, Jacob received his Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management from Polk State in May 2022. He was hired full-time by SALO two months later.

“He’s been helping us win awards since he was a student,” SALO Director Melvin Thompson said. “Blessen’s been a valuable member of our organization since he’s been here. This is well deserved.”

The College was well represented at this year’s conference, held at Seminole State College of Florida. Eight students and four staff members were in attendance.

“I appreciate the team for nominating me,” Jacob said. “I love working for SALO. Nothing can be accomplished without the team.”

San Jacinto College named a semifinalist for the 2025 Aspen Prize

San Jacinto College news graphic

PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College has been named as a semifinalist for the 2025 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence as recognized by the Aspen Institute. The $1 million award is the nation's signature recognition of high achievement and performance among community colleges. The 20 institutions recognized as semifinalists stand out among more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide as having high levels of student success and comprehensive systems of student support, as well as equitable outcomes for Black and Hispanic students and those from lower-income backgrounds. San Jacinto College is one of only two colleges in Texas to be named among the semifinalists.

“Being named a semifinalist for the Aspen Prize is a tremendous honor for San Jacinto College,” said Dr. Brenda Hellyer , San Jacinto College Chancellor. “It underscores our unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional education and fostering equitable outcomes for all our students. We know how important our work is to improving the quality of life in our community. I thank the Aspen Institute for this recognition and applaud all of our employees for their commitment to our work. I also thank our students for their dedication and resiliency in reaching their goals .”

San Jacinto College continues to put student success first. The College has developed and implemented strategies to ensure students complete their certificates or degrees. By prioritizing student services such as onboarding, academic advising, financial aid advising, food pantries, and mental health supports. Additionally, the College has launched a student database, which ensures that students create focused academic, career, and financial plans and are connected to resources to help them along their educational pathway.

In addition, the College has invested in professional development for student services staff focused on building intentional relationships with students and for full- and part-time faculty that emphasizes student engagement in the classroom and through online learning. Faculty and staff annually update program pathways from entry through bachelor’s degrees so that students understand what courses are needed if they intend to transfer. The College’s goal is that students complete degrees with no excess hours or loss of credits and transfer with junior status within their majors.

For students who choose San Jacinto College to earn a workforce certificate or degree, the College monitors labor market trends through the Texas Workforce Commission and develops programs using information from focus groups and external economic and industry partners.

“Our workforce philosophy reflects our commitment to quality training, authentic learning, and curricula that emphasize critical thinking, professionalism, collaboration, and communication,” said Dr. Laurel Williamson, San Jacinto College Deputy Chancellor and College President. “We maintain close relationships with the industries that drive our economy in this region to ensure we are providing a skilled workforce that meets the needs for our partners today and in the future. We listen first and then work collaboratively on solutions.”

Through that process, San Jacinto College has launched innovative and necessary programs to help fill the workforce pipeline in our region. Some of these new programs include biomanufacturing and biotechnology, autonomous vehicle technician training, aerospace, and two new bachelor’s degrees – cybersecurity and teaching (early childhood education). The College continues to expand existing programs as demand in the talent pipeline requires, ensuring curriculum and student experiences model career and workplace culture. It responds to state and federal emphasis on short-term and micro-credentials for workforce upskilling and reskilling and aligns credit and non-credit programs into seamless student pathways that lead to industry credentials, certificates, and degrees.

“Each of these colleges has demonstrated a sustained commitment to moving beyond enrollment and retention as the markers of student success to defining their success by whether the education they provide changes lives,” said Joshua Wyner, executive director of the Aspen College Excellence Program. “These colleges understand that enrollment and graduation matter most when tied tightly to post-graduation success in transferring for a bachelor’s degree and in securing fulfilling, good-paying jobs and careers.”

The Aspen Prize selection process began October 2023, when Aspen invited 150 community colleges to apply, based on data showing strong, improving, and equitable student outcomes in key areas such as retention, completion, and transfer. Following interviews with leadership teams from applicants receiving top scores, 20 semifinalists were selected.

In June, the committee will narrow the field to 10 finalists. At that time, the Aspen Institute will collect additional information and data through multi-day in-person site visits, and then an independent jury will review the data and select the winner, which will be announced in spring 2025 in Washington, D.C.

The Aspen Institute Names UCNJ as a Semifinalist for Prestigious 2025 Aspen Prize

UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ is one of 20 Community Colleges Being Considered for $1 Million National Prize that Recognizes Excellence in Student Outcomes, Both in College and After Graduation

WASHINGTON D.C., May 7, 2024 – Today, the Aspen Institute named UCNJ as a semifinalist for the 2025 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The $1 million award is the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among community colleges. The institutions selected for this honor stand out among more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide as having high and improving levels of student success, as well as equitable outcomes for Black and Hispanic students and those from lower-income backgrounds. UCNJ is the only semifinalist institution from New Jersey.

“This prestigious recognition is a testament to the tireless efforts of our incredible faculty and staff. Each and every day, they live our mission of transforming our community, one student at a time. I thank them for their commitment. For our students, I know there’s an outdated perception that attending community college isn’t a first choice. Today in particular, I hope they are proud to be attending one of the top 20 community colleges in the country,” stated UCNJ President Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin.

The semifinalists are:

  • Broward College
  • Georgia Highlands College
  • Kingsborough Community College
  • MiraCosta College
  • Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
  • Moorpark College
  • North Iowa Area Community College
  • Northeast Wisconsin Technical College
  • Northwest Iowa Community College

  • State Technical College of Missouri
  • Trinidad State College
  • UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ
  • Wallace State Community College-Hanceville

After the 10 finalists are announced, next steps in the process include:

  • Fall 2024: Multi-day in-person site visits to each of the 10 finalists, during which the Aspen Institute and partners will collect additional information and data, including extensive employment and earnings data on graduates from the finalist colleges.
  • Winter 2025: A distinguished, independent Aspen Prize jury will review data and qualitative summaries that synthesize each part of the 14-month analyses, then meet for a full day to select the winner and others for additional recognition.
  • Spring 2025: Announcement of the Aspen Prize winner and celebration of the 10 finalists in Washington DC.

Four-star s lagonza hayward includes fsu in top 7, share this article.

Four-star safety Lagonza Hayward is one of the top players in the 2025 recruiting cycle and is one of FSU’s top targets in the cycle.

The Seminoles offered Hayward a scholarship back in January and on Tuesday he named them one of his top seven schools. They are battling Tennessee , Florida , South Carolina, USC , South Carolina, Georgia , and Alabama for the Lyons, Georgia product.

He has visited the Seminoles twice since then and will return on May 31 for an official visit. Hayward also has official visits scheduled with USC (June 7), Florida (June 14), and Tennessee (June 21).

While he currently lives in Georgia, he was born in Florida and grew up a fan of Florida State, which he has previously called his “dream school.”

“I grew up a fan of Florida State. That was my dream school growing up. I was born in Pahokee (Fla.) and my dad went to school with Anquan Boldin and they were best friends, so Anquan always told me I would be a Seminole. I love it on campus. It is like being at home at Florida State. The coaches have energy there. (Defensive backs) Coach Patrick Surtain is like that cool uncle, but he will go hard on you when it is time. (Head) Coach (Mike) Norvell is cool too. He will coach you in every aspect of life on and off the field.”

Hayward is the No. 97 overall player and No. 12 safety in the 247Sports composite ranking. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder is also the No. 15 player from Georiga.
