Shania Twain Roars Back to the Stage at 2023 ‘Queen of Me’ Tour Launch [Pictures]

Shania Twain launched her 2023 Queen of Me Tour like an actual rocket ship on Friday night (April 28) in Spokane, Wash. Twain's career-spanning set at the Spokane Arena left no stone unturned, including hits from every era of her decades-long career, as well as some songs she hasn't performed live in years.

Twain's show began with one of her newer songs, "Waking Up Dreaming," and ran through all of the hits fans expect from the country superstar, including “Up!,” “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)” and “I’m Gonna Getcha Good.”

"Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under,” “Any Man of Mine,” “From This Moment On,” “You’re Still the One” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much" were also part of Twain's packed set, and she also incorporated songs from her latest album, Queen of Me , including “Giddy Up!,” “Inhale/Exhale Air” and “Number One.”

According to a press release, one of the highlights of Twain's show was a medley of songs that she has not performed in decades, including “Nah!,” “She’s Not Just a Pretty Face,” “Waiter! Bring Me Water!,” “When,” “Thank You Baby!” and “Party for Two."

Twain performed in front of a colorful backdrop of a rocket ship that took fans on a trip to Twain Town and its saloon. The elaborate stage set, as well as a number of eye-catching costume changes, made for one of the biggest productions of Twain's career to launch her first tour in nearly five years, which follows a successful Las Vegas residency.

Lindsay Ell joined Twain as her support act for the show in Spokane. Hailey Whitters, Breland, Kelsea Ballerini, Robyn Ottolini, Priscilla Block and Mickey Guyton are all slated to join her on various upcoming dates.

Twain also marked the opening night of her tour with the release of Queen of Me (Royal Edition) on Friday. The expanded edition of her latest studio album includes five new tracks: “Bone Dry,” “Wanted Man,” and re-imagined versions of “Inhale/Exhale Air" (featuring Breland),” “Queen of Me” and “Giddy Up!”

Twain's tour continues Saturday night (April 29) in Seattle, Wash., and it will run through Nov. 14, playing more than 80 dates across the world. Scroll through the pictures below to see highlights from opening night.

Shania Twain Polishes Off ‘Queen of Me’ Album Announcement With 2023 Tour Dates

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Shania Twain will release her sixth studio album Queen of M e on Feb. 3, her first full-length record in nearly six years. Alongside her Republic Nashville debut, the country icon will embark on a global arena tour spanning 49 dates, including stops at Nashville’s Geodis Park on June 7 and at New York’s Madison Square Garden on July 11.

“This new record is fun and celebrative, really on the other side of Now ,” Twain told Rina Sawayama in a recent Rolling Stone Musicians on Musicians interview . “I’m happy in my own skin. I’m celebrating that feeling, less apologetic for who I am and what I’ve become. This is me, and I like myself.”

She added: “A lot of it was written during the pandemic. There’s nothing better for me than to not have enough to do, because the first thing I do is pick up my guitar and start songwriting. Now I’ve got four albums’ worth. I’m not kidding.”

The Queen of Me Tour marks Twain’s first proper trip on the road since the completion of her Las Vegas residency. The span of shows kicks off on Friday, April 28, at Spokane Arena in Spokane, Washington. Twain will appear in Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary, Denver, Los Angeles, Montreal, Kansas City, Dallas, London, Dublin, and more. The tour concludes Sept. 26 at England’s Utilita Arena Birmingham.

Eileen Regina Edwards was born Aug. 28, 1965. After her mother remarried, she changed her last name to Twain. At some point Twain met Shania and you know how those two worked out.

Since her self-titled debut in 1993, Shania Twain has moved more than 100 million albums, including 1997’s Come on Over holding the Guinness World Records’ title for biggest-selling album by a solo female artist at 40 million copies.

Her mantelpiece is adorned with 20-plus major music awards, ranging from five Grammys to Junos, CCMAs, World Music Awards and a 2000 Danish Music Award for Foreign Hit of the Year. Somewhat ironically, this citation from the land that gave us Aqua, Volebeat and Mø , was for the hit That Don’t Impress Me Much.

What does impress fans about this country/pop crossover megastar is her ability to keep on coming back. Five years since she wowed crowds on 2018’s Now Tour, Twain is once again riding high in the charts with Queen of Me. Her sixth album, and the first to ship with a parental advisory label, entered the Top 10 in Canada, Australia, the U.S. and was her third No. 1 in the U.K.

Pretty good results for someone who nearly lost her voice forever due to dysphonia and the effects of Lyme disease before recording 2017’s Now.

As she prepares for back-to-back concerts in Vancouver, as well as a final tour date on Nov. 14, here are five things to consider about the Queen of Me Tour:

Great concert reviews

Vancouver Sun country music writer Larry Pynn set a tone for all future Twain concert reviews in his June 10, 1998, piece on her local show, noting that “the reigning queen of country pop put the boots to her naysayers Tuesday night during a two-hour, raucous love-in at GM Place, emerging as a confident vocalist, a standup entertainer and, eh, the Canadian girl next door.”

At a second date on that same tour in April, 1999, The Province’s John P. McLaughlin tapped into what has been key to the singer’s enduring success, the hard work she puts into engaging audiences from the stage: “Whatever else Shania Twain may or may not be, she is first-and-foremost all about fun and there was a packed house of 17,000-plus people who had a ball last night.”

This thread carries across all of the artist’s tours, right up to yours truly reviewing her May 5, 2018, back-to-back gigs at Rogers Arena on the comeback NOW Tour: “Twain talked a lot about coming back from a hard time and her life’s course over the past decade. It has been well-documented how her divorce, complete vocal paralysis due to complications of Lyme disease and abusive upbringing were major hurdles to clear to come back … Shania NOW is every bit as good as Shania then.”

Expect more of the same from this coming tour.

Farewell tour

Following in the footsteps of divas from Cher to Elton John, Twain also bid goodbye to live performances in 2015. The Rock this Country Tour, her first in 11 years, was billed as her farewell. That announcement didn’t even last the length of the tour as Twain decided to take-up a multi-year residency in Las Vegas only three months after announcing her live touring goodbye.

Man! I Feel Like a Woman

This smash hit from 1997’s Come On Over is the most-performed song in Twain’s concerts, although Setlist.fm reports a spread of only nine points between this tune and No. 5, 1995’s Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? The full list is, in order: Man! I Feel Like a Woman!; Any Man of Mine; That Don’t Impress Me Much; You’re Still the One; and Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?

Pretty Liar

About that parental advisory on Queen of Me, it’s due to this little dittie that documents a dirty dance with a disreputable partner. In this cast one who is described as “You’re such a f—–g liar/Another level higher/Your pants are on fire.” In an interview with iheartradio , Twain explained that many of the songs she’s written over the years included such sassy language, but this was the first time she decided to keep one in the final recording. Fans probably don’t need to worry about her suddenly dropping GG Allin covers into her shows.

Still one of the Top 10

A South China Morning Post article from Nov. 22, 2022, listing the Top 10 Wealthiest Pop Divas has the Timmins, Ont.-raised artist’s estimated net worth as US$400 million. The ranking sees Twain join other pop royalty such as Rihanna, Madonna and Beyoncé on the list. A Queen, indeed.

Shania Twain

Shania Twain’s Queen of Me Tour rolled into New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Tuesday (July 11), bringing with it a formidable catalog of country classics as well as a kick-ass opener, Breland, one of the more promising fresh faces in country music.

But Breland – who joined Shania mid-show on “Inhale/Exhale Air” from her 2023 album Queen of Me – wasn’t the only surprise guest. NBC Today anchor Hoda Kotb, who is apparently text message pals with Shania, came out and duetted with the legend on one of her best-loved tunes. Plus, several lucky fans got the chance to share the stage with Twain over the course of the night.

“This really is the time of my life, and I really mean that,” Twain said before her raucous three-song encore. “I’m loving life and I’m loving all these moments. I’m overwhelmed by the welcome.”

She also announced that there’s a 25th anniversary edition of her indispensable 1997 album Come On Over on the way, which will features new mixes as well as live recordings of its songs with guests like Elton John, Chris Martin and Alison Krauss & Union Station. Come On Over – 25th Anniversary Diamond Edition drops Aug. 25 via Mercury/UMe and is available for pre-order now ; Come On Over is the best-selling album from a female artist in the Luminate era (1991-present), giving her three of her seven No. 1s on the Hot Country Songs chart.

From duetting with a broadcast legend to wearing the costume from the “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” music video on stage for the first time ever, here are the best moments from Shania Twain’s NYC tour stop.

A Duet With Hoda

It was a surprise moment we never knew we needed. Shania Twain brought out Today show anchor Hoda Kotb (“we text all the time,” she casually mentioned) to help her celebrate a career milestone (more on that later). Kotb, purple mic in hand, was afforded the treat of a lifetime when Twain blended voices with the broadcast legend for a short a cappella duet on her GOAT ballad “You’re Still the One” before doing the full song (sans Kotb).

Double Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend

In addition to the delightful duet, Kotb helped Twain celebrate the fact that Come On Over has sold more than 20 million copies in the U.S. alone with a double diamond platinum plaque. “I am honored to be on this stage in this beautiful Madison Square Garden in the great city of New York to celebrate an incredible moment for this lovely, incredible human being,” Kotb said. Twain, for her part, seemed genuinely touched: “It’s incredible what’s happened with this album and that all of you are still here supporting me.”

Man! I Feel Like Raiding a Museum!

Twain naturally closes out her Queen of Me shows with one of her best-known songs, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”, but the July 11 stop in NYC was a little bit different. For the first time ever, she wore her iconic outfit from the music video, designed by Marc Bouwer, during a live performance of the song. “This costume hasn’t seen a stage before, it’s the original,” Twain said, noting the corset has been “in a museum collecting dust,” so she decided to take it out for a spin. (Yes, a quarter of a century later, it still fits perfectly.)

Hyde Your Kids

In addition to bringing several couples onstage as she sang “From This Moment On,” Twain brought up two life-long listeners for a special moment with her. The fans, one from Canada, the other from the U.K., became besties in NYC, bonding over their love for Shania; before long, they both realized they had been to the same Shania show in London’s Hyde Park when they were both eight years old. “It’s lovely that you met through music and you’re here all these years later,” Twain said.

Honey Badgering

Sometimes, you gotta sing for your supper, and Shania put the MSG crowd to work before a spirited take on “Honey, I’m Home.” Dividing the MSG crowd into three sections, Twain asked each one to sing the word “honey” in a different key – and she wasn’t playing around. After an unsatisfactory test run from one side of the arena, she asked another side to perform, which it did admirably. “See? That’s how it’s done,” she jokingly chided the first group of people.

Dance With the One That Brought You

We’d be remiss not to salute her two backup dancers, whose enthusiasm and verve kept the energy up the entire show. The duo’s tap-dancing showdown interlude, which gave Twain a chance to change costumes, was far more impressive and entertaining than the kind of video segments stars typically use to keep the audience occupied when they’re off stage.

Memories to Boot

There were a few reflective moments throughout the course of the night. Twain shared how Dolly Parton’s songwriting influenced her growing up and recalled the inauspicious circumstances under which her first hit on the Billboard country charts was written. Acoustic guitar in hand, she shared how “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” was penned in a quiet cabin with no running water. She then performed a short acoustic take on it, before bringing out the full band (and an alien chasing a horse on the video screen – don’t ask) for the more familiar rocking version, since “it became a sh-t kicker” during the studio sessions.

'Let's go, girls!' Shania Twain reigns in Tulsa stop on 'Queen of Me Tour'

shania twain tour opening act

TULSA — The “Queen of Country Pop” blasted into Oklahoma ready to impress Saturday night.

Shania Twain proved she could still rule a stage, putting on a show to "shimmy, shake, make the earth quake," to the delight of her sold-out audience at Tulsa's BOK Center .

In the 30th year of her genre-defying career, the best-selling female artist in country music history is on the road with her "Queen of Me Tour," supporting her newly released sixth studio album of the same name.

It's the first tour and album for Twain, 57, since she underwent open-throat surgery in 2018 . Although her voice admittedly isn't what it once was, the five-time Grammy Award winner still knows how to show her fervent fans a "teasing, squeezing, pleasing kind of time."

Here are five highlights from Twain's Tulsa stop on her "Queen of Me Tour":

1. Shania Twain masters the art of misdirection

A boundary-smashing singer-songwriter who has sold more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, Twain also reigns as a consummate entertainer, from her legendary music videos to her global tour success.

With the "Queen of Me Tour," the icon is opening her concerts with a master class in the magical art of misdirection: The Tulsa crowd thundered as the arena suddenly went dark and theatrical fog rolled. Twain's talented band took the stage — but she didn't.

Wearing sparkly cat-eye sunglasses and a chic black coat, Twain instead emerged in the midst of the floor seats and made her way to stage while singing her perky "Waking Up Dreaming." Her new electro-pop hit's lyrics about "making our way to Mars" set the stage for her anthemic "Up!" to be accompanied by a neon-hued rocket launch on a large LED screen.

With the word "Oklahoma" all but jumping off the high-definition video screen in big candy-colored letters, the Canadian Music Hall of Famer launched into the sassy and a little bluegrassy "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)," a personal favorite from the 1990s. As she strutted in a bright yellow mini skirt with matching cape, a black midriff-bearing top with silver sparkles and fishnet stockings with short glittering black boots, this Gen Xer instantly flashed back to those days when Twain emerged as a pop culture phenomenon.

After the final chorus, Shania suddenly disappeared below the stage, leaving her pair of first-rate backup singer/dancers to engage the audience with an entertaining tap dance-off. The guys kept the crowd distracted long enough for Twain to make a dramatic reappearance perched on a silvery motorcycle shaped like a horse. She got us — and then lounged on the faux chopper to croon "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!"

2. Icon improvises a love song to her fans with opening act Breland

Although she is a living legend in the third decade of her career, the native of Timmins, Ontario, still possesses a small-town, down-to-earth air and seemed to genuinely relish her Tulsa crowd's unabashed adoration. Twain often flashed her familiar wide smile, threw out her arms triumphantly and even screamed with joy in between hits.

But the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer went above and beyond the usual fan service Saturday night when one enthusiastic concertgoer screamed out, "I love you, Shania!" She not only responded with the usual, "I love you, too," but she also spent several minutes improvising a heartfelt ballad about how much she loved Oklahoma.

"I promise you, that's a song," Twain said after singing a few lines. "I'll write it, I'll finish it, and then it will be our song."

She even invited her opening act, "Cross Country" up-and-comer Breland, to return to the stage to serenade the audience with her.

"We're writing a song right now. We're just doing this in the minute, and that's fine, because, Breland, you're so talented," Twain assured the "My Truck" hitmaker, who told the Tulsa audience during his entertaining set that he missed his 10-year high school reunion Saturday night to perform his first show on the icon's tour.

It wasn't the only time Twain paid tribute to her loyal devotees during the concert: She threw in a medley of fan favorites like "She's Not Just a Pretty Face," "Waiter! Bring Me Water!" and "When" that she hasn't regularly performed in concert prior to this tour. She brought a nightclub intimacy to the arena by inviting six pairs of concertgoers to stand at little tables on stage while she crooned her ardent chart-topper "From This Moment On."

"This is our song, so please sing along," Twain encouraged her fans.

Twain even invited two Oklahoma City hairstylists in the audience — one dressed in a replica Twain's iconic costume from the "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" music video and the other paying homage to the superstar's memorable outfit from the "That Don't Impress Me Much" video — to join her on stage after seeing a video they posted on Instagram.

3. 'Queen of Me' balances familiar favorites and new anthems on tour

As with her 2015 "Rock This Country Tour" stop in OKC — that concert trek was initially billed as her farewell tour, but Twain decided along the way that she was not ready to say her last goodbye to the road — her "Queen of Me Tour" show in Tulsa cannily balanced songs from across her long and storied career.

The crowd thrilled as she zipped through her high-energy vintage hits like "Any Man of Mine," "Honey, I'm Home" "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under." Although I missed Shania classics like "No One Needs to Know" and "(If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here!" that didn't make the set list, I'm not sorry I got to see and hear her proudly showcasing a slew of solid new songs.

Her raucous 2000 anthem "Rock This Country!" was accompanied by dazzling video fireworks, and she performed 2017's sultry come-on "Roll Me on the River," against a backdrop of LED fire and stage smoke. The simulated flames burned into a conflagration on her fiery new kiss-off "Pretty Liar."

Most of the Tulsa crowd happily went along for the ride on her fast-paced new ditty "Giddy Up!," her new dance-pop ballad "Number One" matched the oversized disco balls embedded in the stage, and her latest album's hip-shaking title track, which closed her main set, fits in with the tuneful empowerment anthems that have defined her career.

4. Superstar refuses to let vocal shortcomings keep her down

With all her well-documented struggles with her voice, it's a testament to Twain's hard work and determination that she's continuing to sing, record and tour at all. After she contracted Lyme disease from a 2003 tick bite, the lingering illness damaged nerves in her vocal cords, leading to her having open-throat surgery in 2018.

The first recording artist in history to release three consecutive diamond-certified albums, Twain more recently survived a near-fatal bout with COVID-19 and pnemonia .

"I’m not going to be perfect. My voice is not what it used to be. I sing differently. There’ll be holes in it. ... But I go out there with the confidence that I’m the best I can be and that I’ve worked hard to be my best," Twain told The Associated Press earlier this year .

"I’m there for the people that are embracing me for who I am. I will get out there and do my best to make everybody happy, as I always do."

Her voice isn't as strong or supple as it used to be, and it sometimes seemed to fade or get raspy, especially on her older ballads like "From This Moment On" and "Forever and for Always."

Fortunately, Twain's sassy confidence and sex appeal have not been diminished, and she has adopted coping strategies: She surrounds herself with great backup performers, pauses to share stories between songs and, especially, urges her eager fans to do just what they would do anyway: happily wail along with her.

"I'm having the time of my life, and I want to thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for having me here. I'm just really, really touched: I see all of your faces and hear all of your voices. It's very, very moving," she told the Tulsa crowd.

5. Shania Twain dons signature leopard-print outfit for a big finish

Never let it be said that Shania doesn't understand the impact of a dramatic entrance or a grand finale. Abruptly vanishing after "Queen of Me," she left the crowd clamoring for an encore.

With a sudden burst of light, she reappeared suddenly at the top of the stage to belt her smash "That Don't Impress Me Much" in a familiar leopard-print outfit.

"This is the original wardrobe from the 'That Don't Impress Me Much' video," she confirmed, recalling that she endured the heat of California's Salt Flats in the ensemble during filming.

Opening the hooded cloak to reveal her leopard-print bikini top and slinky matching pants, Twain then declared it "time to take this roof off." The crowd was screaming and shouting for her signature hit "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" before she could even drawl "Let's go, girls."

Like the rest of her show, the big finish showcased what made Shania a queen in the first place: Her knack for reminding people of their "prerogative to have a little fun" — and "doing it in style."

Let’s go, girls: Shania Twain does impress Xcel crowd very much

In the 2022 Netflix documentary Shania Twain: Not Just a Girl, there’s a scene in which the Canadian crossover country superstar is discussing her first tour. By the time Twain finally found time to hit the road, she had three albums under her belt — two of which had already achieved the coveted RIAA diamond certification.

“Because I had waited quite a long time to tour, I really felt the pressure to make it great,” she recalls. The sequence goes on to show that Twain’s tour was well worth the wait, and she more than lived up to all the pressure. The 1998/99 Come On Over Tour was a massive success, selling out arenas worldwide. Despite that, Twain has only embarked on four additional treks in the 20 years since.

That touring scarcity makes the opportunity to catch a live Shania Twain performance feel all the more special. After her Wednesday night show at the Xcel, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone from the crowd of about 15,000 who disagrees. As part of the Queen of Me tour, the show was Twain’s third time gracing the Xcel stage. In October 2003, she set the arena’s single-night concert attendance record of 20,554 — which still stands today.

While Twain's impact stretches far beyond country music — Taylor Swift, Lizzo, Haim, Avril Lavigne, Diplo, and Post Malone all cite her as an influence — her effect is undoubtedly still felt among many modern country artists. The opening act for this leg of the Queen of Me tour, Hailey Whitters, is certainly one of them.

Hailey Whitters plays guitar and sings into a microphone

The Iowa-raised, Nashville-based rising star’s 2022 album, Raised, peaked at number nine on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, and just last week, she won New Female Artist of the Year at the 2023 Academy of Country Music Awards. Sporting a shiny pink rodeo queen gown, Whitters took the stage with her band to get the night started. From her first note, it was clear that her recent accolade was well-deserved.

With a voice reminiscent of the Chicks’ Natalie Maines and catchy hooks plucked right out of ’90s radio country, Whitters is a breath of fresh air amongst the cavalcade of bro-country acts capturing modern mainstream country as of late. Her vibrant, larger-than-life personality equally matches her impressive songwriting abilities. Both attributes immediately captivated the crowd last night.

Being that Whitters grew up in small-town Iowa, she’s just as much a hometown hero in any Midwestern state as she is in her actual hometown. As such, plenty of friends and family were present at the Xcel to proudly watch her live out her dream.

As Twain’s showtime drew near, a bar of lights began to glow along the bottom of the stage. The rest of the stage suddenly came to life with dancing and blinking lights as the pounding drums from “Waking Up Dreaming,” the lead single off the tour’s namesake album Queen of Me, kicked into high gear.

Three identical black carts were wheeled onto the floor midway between the stage and the soundboard. Twain suddenly sprang up from inside one of them. With a quick “whoo,” she began belting out “Waking Up Dreaming.” We were off. Right off the bat, Twain’s voice seemed slightly strained during the opener. While there were several other times throughout the night where that would be the case, her voice thankfully recovered for all the songs that matter most. During those moments when her voice didn’t seem to want to cooperate, though, her extremely talented pair of backup dancers/singers stepped up to assist along with the crowd.

The cart eventually began going through the crowd and toward the stage where Twain’s band and dancers awaited. She doled out fist bumps and handshakes to many fortunate fans along the way.

Following “Waking Up Dreaming” came a block of hits. “Up!,” “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You),” “I’m Gonna Getcha Good,” and “You’re Still the One” all provided the exact punch of ’90s indulgence that the crowd of diehard Twainiacs desired. Such was the case throughout the entire two-hour set.

Blocks of hits interspersed with newer songs like “Giddy Up!” and “Inhale/Exhale AIR” delivered strong, energy-packed waves of nostalgia rooted in the present. With a catalog of hits as deep as Shania Twain’s (12 of the 16 tracks off Come On Over alone were released as singles), deciding which songs not to include in her set was no doubt harder than what songs to include. That said, all the big ones were there — “Any Man Of Mine,” “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” “Honey, I’m Home,” “Forever And For Always” — and each one was as spectacular as the last.

Two things were abundantly clear throughout Twain’s set. First, she was having an absolute blast, as were her band and dancers. Never one to let dead air hang over the crowd, Twain filled any voids with random yells, “whoos,” and even straight-up shrieks. Her excitement for being onstage was palpable, making the Xcel feel like a much smaller, more intimate room.

Twain’s accompanying visuals kept the mood light as well. During many songs, the stage’s massive center screen, flanked by two large vertical screens, displayed scenes from a fictional Martian town called Twain Town. Aliens invaded and chased galloping horses (and, at one point, Twain’s fiddler) around the screens. It was nice and silly and felt a little like a world you’d find yourself immersed in at a Meow Wolf installation.

Secondly, Shania Twain really loves her fans. Besides shaking hands and fist-bumping people during the opening number, she found plenty of other opportunities to interact with fans. Several groups of fans were brought onstage to watch up close and personal as Twain and one of her backup singers sang a duet of “From This Moment On.” During the song’s intro, she posed for photos with each of them.

Shania Twain in front of a rocket and starry sky backdrop.

Later, after revealing her love of reading fan mail, she surprised a woman named Dana, who’d messaged her earlier that day with a photo of a ticket to her 1998 show in Wisconsin. Twain asked where Dana was in the crowd and invited her onstage. The two made small talk, sang a few lines from “Up!” (Dana’s favorite Shania song), and posed for a selfie.

It would be far too easy for someone as big as Shania Twain to simply tolerate her fans as many artists do, much less embrace them. But Twain genuinely seems to cherish all interactions she gets with her fans, which is refreshing to see.

Despite many high points throughout the night, Twain’s set wasn’t without a few minor low spots. As previously mentioned, her voice did seem a little strained at times. But Twain has a complicated relationship with her voice as it is. In 2004, she took a lengthy hiatus after Lyme disease weakened her voice to the point that she could barely sing. After retraining her voice and overcoming such an almost career-ending obstacle, she’s owed more than a little vocal criticism slack.

A mid-set medley of b-sides, while certainly appreciated by the diehards in the crowd, brought the energy level down a bit too much. Many used it as an opportunity to sit and scroll through Instagram. Other lulls came during “ Roll Me On the River,” the only song Twain played off of 2017’s Now, as well as during songs from Queen Of Me, namely “Pretty Liar” and “Number One.” While these are all great songs on their own, they just couldn’t stand up to the rest of the energy-packed set.

Finally, Twain closed out the main set with the title track off Queen Of Me. While this is the album she’s touring on, it seemed odd to go out on a non-single track off an album that’s only been out for a few months when there are so many other, higher notes on which to end.

All energy lulls were wiped clean during Twain’s two-song encore — and we all know which songs make up a Shania Twain encore. By far, the two biggest hits of her career, “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” were the perfect closers for the night. During the former, the stage visuals were bathed in cheetah print resembling the outfit Twain wore in the song’s music video. And speaking of music videos, before the final song, Twain revealed that the form-fitting black dress she wore for the encore was the form-fitting black dress from the “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” video. The energy during the encore was through the roof, and, as during the main set, Twain looked like she was having a blast.

Wednesday’s show marks about five years since the last time Twain played Xcel on 2018’s Now Tour. When she embarked on her first tour in 1998, she was playing to about five years of pent-up demand for her to tour, hence the pressure she felt to make it great. After all these years and several tours later, she probably doesn’t feel as much pressure anymore. But that doesn’t mean she didn’t make this tour any less special.

Things To Do Music and Concerts

Shania twain to reign at blossom music center june 30, ‘queen of me’ tour comes to northeast ohio after country-pop star emerges with new album.

Shania Twain performing

As Shania Twain was coming up with song ideas for a new album, she wanted to create something to uplift her own mood.

The COVID-19 pandemic had just hit, and as she was hunkered down at home, she felt inspired to “put a little up in my giddy,” said Twain during a recent phone interview.

The end result was the single “Giddy Up!” off of her sixth studio album, “Queen of Me,” which dropped earlier this year. It’s an upbeat, country dance-pop tune, drenched in feel-good vibes that gave Twain her first Top 10 single in years.

“It was a way to cheer me up,” said Twain, whose “Queen of Me” Tour will reign June 30 at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls.

“The whole album, ‘Queen of Me,’ ended up being very much in that same spirit,” she continued. “It was like, ‘OK, come on, it’s time to cheer up!’”

That sentiment has translated well to the live show, Twain insists, as she kicked off the tour on April 28 in Washington. It’s also very different from her Let’s Go! Las Vegas residency, which played inside Zappos Theater from late 2019 through September 2022.

“It’s been fabulous,” she said of the tour so far. “We’re having a lot of fun and the crowds are in great spirits and I’m energized by sharing this music. It’s a variety of music, and that’s really fun for me because I’m doing stuff from way, way back and then new stuff; it’s just a mix of everything.”

And because she knows fans like to take lots of pictures and post videos of the shows on social media, she likes to change things up a bit at each stop to keep it fresh.

“I’ve styled all of the wardrobe myself, so there’s always something unique and different,” Twain shared. “They’re all one-offs so you couldn’t spoil it for yourself even if you did go online and look.”

Along with some of her biggest hits like “Any Man of Mine,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” Twain has peppered new music into the current setlist including “Giddy Up!,” “Pretty Liar,” “Waking Up Dreaming,” “Inhale/Exhale Air,” “Pretty Liar” and the album title track.

“Queen of Me,” and its extended version, which features additional songs and remixes, is filled with everything from dance-pop bangers to country-tinged ballads, and it found Twain teaming up with some unexpected songwriters and producers. The album includes collaborations with Tyler Joseph from Twenty One Pilots and Adam Messinger, who is known for his work with the Canadian reggae band Magic! and pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Summer concert preview: Warm months bringing country stars and more to Blossom and other venues

“The album evolved stylistically and I was just doing everything that I loved,” Twain said of broadening her sound and approach. “I really loved Adam’s work with Magic! and I wanted to tap into his talents, so I called him and said, ‘You know, we’re probably an unlikely match, but can I send you some songs and you can play around with them?’ So I sent him ‘Queen of Me’ and “Pretty Liar’ and I loved what he did.”

“Tyler Joseph, I’m a big-time fan of his. I told him that I knew he didn’t normally produce other people’s work, but asked if I could send him a song, and if he liked it, if he’d consider it at some point,” she continued. “It took him a while to get around to being able to do it because he’s so busy with his own stuff, but he really loved ‘The Hardest Stone.’ He did that out of the love he had for the song and put his magic to it and I love what he did. All the collaborations were with artists that I am a personal fan of their work and I sent it to them without planning on how they would turn out or anything, it was just let’s go and create some music and see what happens.”

Though it didn’t make the album, Twain released a cover of Harry Styles’ “Falling” for her Spotify Sings session in March.

“I listen to Harry on my own free time because I’m a big fan of his,” she said of choosing the song to cover. “That was one of his songs that I’d put on repeat and I thought, ‘Wow, I’d actually like to sing this one.’ So when it came up to do some covers, that was a top choice.”

She teamed up with Styles during Weekend One of the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio , California, when she came out as a surprise guest during his headlining set to sing “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and “Still the One.” It was a memorable moment that almost didn’t happen because Twain’s schedule was so hectic.

But she made time for Harry.

“It was totally unexpected,” she said of the roaring response the Coachella audience had to the performance. She had a little bit of experience out at that venue since she headlined Coachella’s country music sister festival, Stagecoach, back in 2017 , but this was an entirely different audience.

“I wasn’t expecting that reaction,” she said. “It was overwhelming and just very, very awesome.”

Twain is a big fan of TikTok videos. She posts plenty of her own, but she’s really into all of the dancing videos and creative content, even when it involves fans using her music to create the clips. She’s also impressed by the dedication of the people that come out to the shows sporting homemade versions of some era of Twain’s fashion.

“That is so fun,” she said. “I’m telling you, the audience is my entertainment at every show. I’m not watching my own show, I’m watching them and it’s so entertaining. When people come dressed up — whether it’s the denim on denim or the ‘Man, I Feel Like a Woman’ outfit or whatever — it means something to me. It means that it matters to them and has made some sort of statement in their lives and I’ve successfully shared my work and my art with them. It’s the biggest compliment.”

Who’s Who on Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’

A guide to key guests and behind-the-scenes figures on the star’s eighth studio album.

  • Share full article

Beyoncé smiles while wearing a cowboy hat and an outfit covered in jewels.

By Hank Shteamer

A new Beyoncé release isn’t just an album — it’s a sprawling collective effort where the supporting cast and behind the scenes crew can reveal a lot about the scope of the star’s vision. For “Cowboy Carter,” in addition to household names like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus and Post Malone (and a brief cameo from her daughter Rumi), she’s looped in a slew of collaborators new and old. Here’s a guide to some of the most significant figures you’ll see in the credits.

Rhiannon Giddens

Rihannon Giddens plays on the “Cowboy Carter” single “Texas Hold ’Em,” but beyond the banjo and viola she contributed to the track, she lends the whole project a special kind of historical weight. During the past two decades, Giddens has led a new wave of folk artists helping to shed light on the foundational role that Black musicians played in the creation of American roots music. A scholar of the banjo as much as a practitioner, she’s made it her mission to educate audiences about its history as an African-descended instrument that was once, as she put it in 2017 when she won a MacArthur Genius Grant , “an absolute emblem of the African American in the South.”

Trained as an opera singer, Giddens rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops — with Dom Flemons, Justin Robinson and Sule Greg Wilson — a Grammy-winning group that celebrated and updated the legacy of Black string bands with help from an older mentor, the fiddler Joe Thompson. In 2023, she released “You’re the One,” her first album of all original material. Last year, Giddens also won a Pulitzer Prize for “Omar,” an opera she co-wrote with the composer Michael Abels based on the life of a West African Muslim scholar who was captured and sold as a slave in America.

Raphael Saadiq

Raphael Saadiq’s name has been a mark of quality in R&B for more than 30 years. Saadiq, who wrote, produced and played various instruments on Beyoncé’s latest, first found fame in the late ’80s with the trio Tony! Toni! Toné! and went on to score a Top 20 solo hit with “Ask of You” in 1995. He became an in-demand producer and worked with a wide array of artists including D’Angelo — whose two biggest hits, “Lady” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” are Saadiq co-writes — as well as Whitney Houston, Erykah Badu and Bilal. He’s been in Beyoncé’s orbit for years, having produced her team-up with Stevie Wonder on a 2005 Luther Vandross tribute album, helped produce her sister Solange’s acclaimed 2016 effort “A Seat at the Table,” and appeared on “Renaissance” as a producer, writer and performer.

Linda Martell

More than 50 years ago, Linda Martell broke barriers in country music, becoming the first Black woman to find commercial success in the genre, and the first to perform on the Grand Ole Opry as a solo act. Her lone album, “Color Me Country” from 1970, found her rebranding as a country artist after earlier work in a girl-group pop vein, and yielded two Top 40 country singles. But Martell faced racism on the road — “You’d be singing and they’d shout out names and you know the names they would call you,” she told Rolling Stone in 2020 — and, after a dispute with her producer, her career faltered. She never made another album, but reissues of “Color Me Country” have brought overdue attention to the artist, now 82, over the past decade. “I am proud that Beyoncé is exploring her country music roots,” she said in a statement on Friday. “What she is doing is beautiful, and I’m honored to be a part of it. It’s Beyoncé, after all!”

Robert Randolph

Robert Randolph’s pedal-steel guitar is a background texture on “Cowboy Carter,” turning up on the single “16 Carriages,” but typically, it’s the star attraction. Since the early 2000s, Randolph has been touring and recording with his Family Band, honing a rousing fusion of R&B, rock, funk, blues and the gospel music he grew up on. Before he became a bandleader and an in-demand collaborator with the Allman Brothers, Buddy Guy, Norah Jones and other marquee names, he was a musical phenom in the Black Pentecostal church, working in the tradition of so-called sacred steel. As Randolph recently told Rolling Stone , Beyoncé recruited him to help add “country fire” to her new project: “She said she liked the way I make my instrument sound like a singer.”

Dave Hamelin

Dave Hamelin spent the early 2000s drumming — and, later, playing guitar and singing — in the Stills, a Montreal outfit that was part of an explosion of indie-rock from Canada dovetailing with the fertile New York scene. After the band’s 2011 breakup, Hamelin found a niche as a producer to various Canadian rock luminaries, including Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew, the Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie and, later, American acts in the GOOD Music orbit, like the singer-rapper 070 Shake. His “Cowboy Carter” work, which includes songwriting, production and keyboards on “16 Carriages,” marks his first Beyoncé credit.

Tanner Adell

“Lookin’ like Beyoncé with a lasso,” Tanner Adell described herself on “Buckle Bunny,” the title track from her 2023 debut. The singer-songwriter, who has cited Dolly Parton and Destiny’s Child as key early influences, has racked up tens of millions of streams and amassed an impressive TikTok following with her twangy-voiced, attitude-heavy fusion of country, pop and hip-hop. Her recent acoustic ballad “Luke Combs,” where she professes that her “country heart still wants to be the girl in a Luke Combs song,” shows off her range. “My dream is to be the first genuinely country pop star,” she said last year , in an interview where she named Beyoncé as her dream collaborator. Now, she’s one of four guests on a cover of the Beatles’ “Blackbird.”

Khirye Tyler

Before the producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Khirye Tyler made his studio debut with Beyoncé on “Texas Hold ’Em,” his name turned up in the credits for another No. 1 hit: Roddy Ricch’s “The Box.” Establishing himself as part of the gospel-soul outfit Red Hands, Tyler has made inroads into the pop world, working as a musical director for Khalid and Alicia Keys, appearing on albums by Keys and Jay Electronica, and wearing numerous hats on Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour. Tyler played keyboards, contributed arrangements and helped musically direct the run; he also worked on the score for the tour’s companion documentary.

Brittany Spencer

In fall 2020, Brittany Spencer posted a video of herself covering the Highwomen’s “Crowded Table.” Less than a year later, she was onstage with the supergroup at BottleRock Napa, filling in for Amanda Shires, who was recovering from surgery. Hooked early on the Chicks and Shania Twain, the Baltimore native — who grew up performing in church choir and began singing classical music in high school — moved to Nashville in 2013 and honed her songwriting while working odd jobs. Her social-media breakthrough earned her high-profile opening slots with Jason Isbell and Reba McEntire, and paved the way for her Grand Ole Opry debut in 2021. Her new LP “My Stupid Life” showcases country-steeped songs that would sound perfectly at home on pop radio. She also appears on “Blackbiird.”

The rising singer-songwriter Shaboozey — whose alias riffs on his last name, Chibueze, an Igbo word meaning “God is king” — draws equally on the hip-hop he grew up watching on BET’s “106 & Park,” the country music he heard in his native Virginia and classic-rock staples like Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. After leaning toward trap on his earliest singles, he has carved out a unique space on more recent efforts like “Annabelle” and “Let It Burn,” layering his deep, drawling voice over acoustic guitar and folk-pop grooves while adding dashes of rap. “Sometimes I don’t feel I should rightfully be labeled as a country artist,” he said recently , ahead of his appearance on the “Cowboy Carter” tracks “Spaghettii” and “Sweet Honey Buckiin’.” “I have peers who make country in its truest form.”

Willie Jones

Willie Jones, credited on the gospelly “Just for Fun,” has racked up tens of millions of streams with a savvy blend of radio-ready country and the swagger of Southern rap. “Welcome to the ratchet Black zydeco rodeo,” the Louisiana artist sang on his 2021 single “Down by the Riverside” over a crunchy bar-band-like groove. On last year’s “Dive Bar,” he and fellow singer-songwriter Ben Burgess vowed, “We gonna turn this club into a dive bar tonight.” Jones, who grew up singing gospel music and pursued musical theater in high school, signed with Sony Music Nashville in 2021.

Reyna Roberts

The singer-songwriter Reyna Roberts, who appears on “Blackbiird,” started out early in country music, performing covers of the Chicks and LaBelle before the age of 5. The daughter of Army parents, she moved from Alaska to Alabama to California growing up and soaked up a variety of music , like Gretchen Wilson and the “awesome guitar riffs” of Steve Vai. She received a key career boost in 2020 when Mickey Guyton posted a video of her at the piano, belting out a cover of Carrie Underwood’s “Drinking Alone,” which Underwood reposted days later. As heard on “Stompin’ Grounds,” one of a few of her songs to earn more than a million streams, and “Louisiana,” a down-home anthem from her 2023 debut full-length “Bad Girl Bible,” her sound leans toward a raucous country-rock hybrid.

Tiera Kennedy

Tiera Kennedy has called her sound “R&B country,” a smooth blend that yielded more than 20 million streams for “Found It in You,” a 2021 track — written with her husband, the songwriter-producer Cameron Bedell — released when she was still unsigned. Kennedy grew up in Birmingham, Ala., where her parents played R&B around the house and local bluegrass musicians introduced her to classic country. Her family moved to Nashville, and she found a valuable mentor in Shania Twain, who invited Kennedy to perform on the music-competition show “Real Country.” Since then, Kennedy has honored Twain at the Ryman, debuted at the Grand Ole Opry, inked a record deal with Scott Borchetta (who once signed Taylor Swift), begun hosting an Apple Music country show, joined Beyoncé for “Blackbiird,” and released the twangy, hooky country-rock single “Jesus, My Mama, My Therapist” ahead of her upcoming debut album.
