Travellers looking for a faster way to get through Canada's major airports can take advantage of a new option starting in the summer.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced plans for a new Verified Traveller program that will offer a faster pre-boarding screening process for select travellers in six major airports across Canada including Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Commencing June 21, the new program will replace the existing Trusted Traveller program, providing a "faster and more efficient screening experience" for eligible travellers in Dedicated Verified Traveller screening lines.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) notes that Verified Travellers have undergone extensive background checks and carry special photo identification.

Eligible passengers include the roughly 1.7 million Nexus members — pre-approved travellers who can cross the U.S.-Canada border more quickly — as well as military personnel, aviation workers and RCMP officers. Those eligible can access the lines without applying beforehand.

Smart Traveller: Earn Points for Complimentary Lounge Visits — Even on Free Visits

Complimentary airport lounge access is a sweet deal. What’s even sweeter is double dipping by earning points on complimentary lounge visits. You can now do just that with Smart Traveller . With this program, you can earn points for complimentary or paid visits to Plaza Premium Lounges worldwide, as well as a host of other activities. In this article, we'll discuss how points earned with the program can be redeemed for gift cards, lounge visits, lounge amenities, and more.

How To Earn Arrture Points

Earning Arrture points (the points of the Smart Traveller program) is relatively straightforward:

  • Visit any participating lounge.
  • When presenting your credentials for admission, present your Smart Traveller e-membership card.
  • Allow up to six weeks for your Arrture points to post your account.

The number of points will depend on two factors: the type of lounge you visited (Plaza Premium Lounge or Plaza Premium First) and how you gained entry. Did you pay, get complimentary access, use airline status, etc.? Earning rates are as follows.

Smart Traveller home page

  • 100 Arrture Points for a complimentary entry, such as airline invitations, travel passes, credit card membership, and more.
  • 150 Arrture Points for a paid entry — either walk-in or by booking online.
  • 150 Arrture Points for a complimentary entry.
  • 300 Arrture Points for a paid entry.

If you gain discounted entry or use vouchers, you will not be eligible for any points. The only exception is using the Smart Traveller member discount on paid visits. In this case, you will still accrue Arrture points.

Birthday bonus points

Smart Traveller offers a nice bonus if you are traveling during your birthday month: double points on all eligible transactions. What stands out here is that you are not restricted to your birthday itself or only one visit. If you visit 10 lounges during your birthday month, you'll still earn double points on every visit. Birthday bonus points will post to your account within 14 days of the transaction.

Participating locations

The list of participating locations is extensive, with many locations across the world, including London, Rome, and Melbourne, to name a few. However, for U.S.-based travelers, the list is less than stellar. While there are several participating locations in Canada — including Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg — there are only three participating lounges in the U.S. at present. These are the Dallas–Fort Worth Plaza Premium Lounge (Terminal E, domestic departures), the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at Newark (assuming it ever reopens), and the Plaza Premium Lounge near the Palm Court in Orlando.

Consideration for Priority Pass Members

One thing to remember is that the Plaza Premium Group operates all the lounges on the list. Plaza Premium and Priority Pass have a rocky relationship, cutting ties in 2021 and then bringing back access to some (but not all) locations in June 2023 .

Numerous premium credit cards provide Priority Pass memberships . If you access Plaza Premium Lounges through a Priority Pass membership, ensure you know which you can and can't access.

However, Capital One provides access to Plaza Premium for some cardholders . That includes unlimited visits for Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card cardholders.

Amex Platinum Reprieve

When it comes to credit card complimentary lounge access, The Platinum Card ® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express   are arguably kings of the hill. Holders of both cards can access a wide range of lounges across the world, including Plaza Premium lounges. Therefore, gaining complementary lounge entry via their eligible card should be no problem at all!

Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.

Other Points Earning Options

Keep in mind that the Smart Traveller program is not a one-trick pony. Yes, you can earn points for lounge visits, but you also can earn Arrture points in tons of other ways . These include everything from dining in airports to making a purchase on eBay or buying a new iPhone.

Redeeming Your Arrture points

You have many options for redeeming your Arrture points. Choices range from lounge visits and facilities to gift cards and hotel stays. Some of the redemption options include :

  • Lounge visits vary in price between 1,800 and 4,200 points.
  • Spa and shower packages are available from 1,500 points.
  • Premium drinks start from 480 points.
  • Aerotel airport hotel stays start from 8,000 points.
  • Gift cards from major brands and retailers — including Amazon, Adidas, 711, and more — start at 500 points.
  • Shop at the Smart Traveler online boutique.

Arrture points redemption options with Smart Traveller

This program is awesome news, especially if you use your Amex Platinum or Business Platinum Card   to access any of the lounges in the program. What’s more, it is free to join. As long as you keep some activity on your account every 12 months, your points will not expire. That lets you focus on building up your balance toward your next redemption.

Ultimately, anything that adds value to your current travel rewards at no additional cost or with minimal investment in time is welcome news. Is having the Smart Traveller program running in the background worth it, allowing you to earn points for lounge visits you were going to make anyway? Probably.

Going To The Vancouver Games? Travel Smart!

Going To The Vancouver Games? Travel Smart!

The Vancouver 2010 Organising Committee (VANOC) is encouraging spectators going to this year’s Olympic Winter Games, without prearranged transport to the competition venues, to Travel Smart . Getting to and from an Olympic venue at Games time is always a little different because of the unique nature of the Olympic Games. This is why all spectators should know before they go how they are going to arrive and depart from the venue(s) where they will see the world’s best athletes compete.

In Vancouver

There is no spectator parking at any Olympic venue, so the best option is to use public transport or to walk to the venue. VANOC and its local transportation partners have created a website called www.travelsmart2010.ca , which can help you find the most up-to-date information and the best way to access your venue by public transport. The venues in Vancouver include: BC Place (Ceremonies) , Canada Hockey Place (Ice Hockey) , Richmond Olympic Oval (Speed skating) , Pacific Coliseum (Figure Skating & Short Track) , UBC Thunderbird Arena (Ice Hockey) , and the Vancouver Olympic Centre (Curling) . Fans can also refer to the spectator guide that arrived with their event tickets or check out Vancouver2010.com.

From Vancouver to Whistler

There is no spectator parking at any Olympic venue, so fans travelling up for the day to Whistler or Cypress to see an event will find that the Olympic Bus Network (OBN) will be the fastest and most convenient way of accessing the Olympic venues of Whistler Creekside (Alpine Skiing) , Whistler Olympic Park (Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, & Biathlon) , and Whistler Sliding Centre (Bobsleigh, Skeleton, & Luge) , as well as the venue of Cypress Mountain (Freestyle Skiing & Snowboard) . A ticket on the OBN will reserve you a round trip seat from Vancouver to your venue and back at a specified time. All spectators going to an event at Cypress must travel on the OBN no matter where their journey originates. Spectators going to the mountain venues are encouraged to pre-book their trip now , so as to guarantee their departure time and not risk missing the start of their competition (A free phone number is available for more information on the OBN; within Canada/USA: +1 866 957 3774; the rest of the world: +1 866 330 7275; or you can check out www.travelsmart.ca or the spectator guide at www.vancouver2010.com for more information)

In Whistler

For fans staying in Whistler and attending events there, the venues can be accessed by BC transit (Creekside and Sliding Centre) or the Whistler Olympic Park Express shuttle (Olympic Park) from designated stops within Whistler Village. If you’re in Whistler and plan to attend events in either Vancouver or Cypress Mountain, you’ll need to make your own way to Vancouver (a number of public transport options exist). Then you can use public transport to access the venues or the OBN to access Cypress Mountain.

VANCOUVER 2010

Vancouver and Whistler will host the XXI Olympic Winter Games from 12 to 28 February 2010 and the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from 12 to 21 March 2010. The seven winter Olympic sports that will be on show in Vancouver are luge, skiing, skating, ice hockey, biathlon, bobsleigh and curling.

Whether you’re traveling for business, pleasure, or a combination of both, the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is a valuable tool that every traveler should consider utilizing.

So, let’s dive in and explore the world of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. Discover how this program can become your travel companion, keeping you safe, informed, and prepared as you embark on your next adventure.

What is the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program?

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service provided by the U.S. Department of State for U.S. citizens and nationals who are traveling or living abroad. It is designed to assist travelers in receiving important information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in their destination country.

The program serves as a communication channel between the U.S. government and travelers, allowing the government to reach out to individuals in case of emergencies or critical situations. At the same time, it enables travelers to receive up-to-date information and guidance on safety and security while abroad.

By enrolling in STEP, travelers provide their contact information, travel itinerary, and other pertinent details to the U.S. embassy or consulate in their destination country. This information allows the embassy to better assist and support travelers in case of emergencies such as natural disasters, civil unrest, or medical emergencies.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is not restricted to specific types of travel – it is beneficial for both short-term trips and long-term stays abroad. Whether you’re embarking on a week-long vacation or relocating to a foreign country for work, enrolling in STEP is strongly recommended.

One of the key features of STEP is that it allows travelers to receive travel alerts and warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State. These alerts provide information on safety and security concerns in specific countries or regions and help travelers make informed decisions about their travel plans.

Overall, the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program acts as a vital tool in keeping travelers connected with the U.S. government while abroad. It provides an additional layer of support and ensures that crucial information reaches individuals in a timely manner, enabling them to make informed decisions for their safety and well-being.

How does the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program work?

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) works by establishing a direct line of communication between travelers and the U.S. embassy or consulate in their destination country. The program operates on the basis of information exchange, with travelers providing their contact details and travel plans to the embassy or consulate.

When a traveler enrolls in STEP, they receive important updates and alerts from the U.S. government regarding the country they are visiting. This information can include travel advisories, security warnings, and notifications about potential risks or emergencies in the area.

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how the program works:

  • Enrollment: Travelers visit the official Smart Traveler Enrollment Program website and create an account. They fill out a form with their personal details, travel itinerary, and emergency contact information.
  • Verification: Once the form is submitted, the information is verified by the U.S. embassy or consulate in the traveler’s destination country.
  • Confirmation: Upon successful enrollment, the traveler receives a confirmation email with important program details and contact information.
  • Travel Alerts and Warnings: Throughout their trip, travelers receive travel alerts and warnings related to their destination. These updates are sent via email or can be accessed through the STEP website.
  • Emergency Assistance: In case of emergencies such as natural disasters, civil unrest, or medical emergencies, the U.S. embassy or consulate can reach out to enrolled travelers to provide assistance and guidance.

It is crucial for travelers to keep their enrollment information up to date. Any changes in travel plans or contact information should be promptly updated in the STEP system to ensure that the embassy or consulate can reach them if needed.

In addition to providing important alerts and assistance, the program also allows travelers to access valuable resources such as local emergency numbers, U.S. embassy contact information, and medical facilities in their destination country.

Remember, enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. It is a simple and effective way to stay connected with the U.S. government and receive essential information that can help ensure a safe and successful journey.

Benefits of enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program

Enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) offers a range of valuable benefits that can enhance your travel experience and ensure your safety and well-being while abroad. Here are some key advantages of enrolling in STEP:

  • Timely Travel Alerts: By enrolling in STEP, you will receive important travel alerts and warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State. These alerts provide up-to-date information on safety and security concerns in specific countries or regions and help you make informed decisions about your travel plans.
  • Emergency Assistance: In case of emergencies such as natural disasters, civil unrest, or medical emergencies, the U.S. embassy or consulate can reach out to enrolled travelers to provide assistance and guidance. This can be incredibly valuable in navigating unfamiliar situations and ensuring that you have support when you need it most.
  • Access to Embassy Services: By enrolling in STEP, you gain access to a range of services offered by U.S. embassies and consulates in your destination country. This includes access to local emergency numbers, contact information for U.S. embassy personnel, and information on medical facilities and resources.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing that you have a direct line of communication and support from the U.S. government can bring peace of mind during your travels. Enrolling in STEP allows you to stay connected and informed, reducing anxiety and ensuring that you have the necessary information to make well-informed decisions.
  • Support during Evacuations: In extreme cases where an evacuation of U.S. citizens is necessary, the U.S. embassy or consulate can use STEP to communicate evacuation plans and provide guidance. This ensures that enrolled travelers receive the support and assistance they need to safely leave the affected area.
  • Assistance with Lost or Stolen Passports: If your passport gets lost or stolen while you are abroad, enrolling in STEP can be immensely helpful. It enables you to quickly connect with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for guidance on replacing your passport and obtaining necessary travel documents.

It’s important to note that enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is free of charge and available to all U.S. citizens and nationals who are traveling or residing abroad. It is a valuable resource that can greatly enhance your travel experience and provide an added layer of support and safety.

Enrolling in STEP is a proactive step that demonstrates your commitment to your own safety and well-being while abroad. It allows you to stay informed, connected, and prepared, enabling you to make the most of your travel experiences with peace of mind.

TravelSmart for Kids Strategy

A girl is shown with the SkyTrain and HandyDART behind her

On this page

The TravelSmart4Kids Strategy and the Executive Summary are now available for download.

TravelSmart4Kids is a first of its kind strategy that seeks to create a region that is safe, healthy, and sustainable to ensure future generations know how to navigate a multi-modal transportation network. It is a regional, coordinated strategy to encourage more children between the ages of 0 to 12 to travel by active and sustainable modes of transportation in Metro Vancouver, including walking, cycling, rolling, and taking transit.

The Strategy includes a clear vision and goals for children’s travel in the region. The Strategy addresses some of the current barriers and challenges of active and sustainable travel for children are facing in our region. It also looks forward and aims to create changes in these three focus areas:

Culture and Behaviour: Create a culture for healthy and safe active and sustainable transportation.

Sustainability and Legacy: Support the sustainability and legacy of active and sustainable travel initiatives that focus on children.

Resources and Funding: Builds on the need for additional resources and funding to sustain programs, initiatives, and infrastructure that support sustainable travel for children.

The implementation of the Strategy involves all the organizations and agencies that helped to develop it. Every stakeholder has a role to play. A lot of stakeholders are already doing a lot of work that aligns with the Strategy.

A Regional, Coordinated Approach

We're more effective together.

In the past, funding and resources have been put to programs and initiatives that are intended to encourage active travel to school without fully understanding the impact they have.

The creation of TravelSmart4Kids was a regional, team effort led by TransLink, along with school districts, municipalities, health authorities, regional and provincial governments, and many others.

Doing this work at the regional level helped to streamline our efforts and build support and ownership of the Strategy. We have the organizations and agencies within the region and province that have the passion, knowledge, and capacity to continue to do this work.

Breaking Down the Strategy

The Strategy’s framework ensures there is a clear vision and goals for children’s active and sustainable travel in the region. The themes are supported by strategies and actions to work towards the vision and goals. The vision is supported by two goals, with the support of three themes, and six strategies. Each strategy has a series of actions identified, there are a total of 56 actions.

TravelSmart4Kids is intended to be implemented collaboratively over the short- (0 to 1 years), medium- (1 to 5 years) and long-term (5+ years), and to align with TransLink’s Regional Transportation Strategy Transport 2050.

Four priority actions were identified that would have the greatest impact in the short-term and lay the foundations for future years.

  • A Regional Coordinator role was created to champion and lead this work.
  • A Regional Working Group was established for regional stakeholders to come together to provide a platform to share knowledge and learn from one another.
  • Consolidate resources and reference materials already developed that can help encourage more active and sustainable transportation.
  • Establish a formal commitment for the implementation of the Strategy. We are currently working to formalize existing relationships and create new commitments to ensure the Strategy has a lasting impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some of the benefits of active and sustainable travel.

Active and sustainable transportation is any form of human-powered transportation, such as walking, cycling, rolling, and taking transit. This can include scooters, e-scooters, bicycles, e-bicycles, skateboards, and in-line skates.

There are many benefits of safe and active modes, as shown in our Active Kids are Healthy Kids Infographic . Benefits of more trips made by walking, cycling, and transit for children include higher rates of physical activity, stronger mental health, growing independence, stronger academic performance, and deeper social connections. Promoting walking, cycling, rolling, and taking transit within a community can result in an improved transportation safety, a more affordable and equitable community, reduced traffic congestion, better air quality, reduced noise from motor vehicles, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

How was TravelSmart4Kids developed?

The Strategy was led by TransLink and developed collaboratively with stakeholders across the region through an interactive, four-phase process. Stakeholders from across the region were involved in developing the Strategy.

This included school districts, municipalities, and provincial ministries that have a mandate to grow active and sustainable transportation for children’s education, health, and well-being. Regional health authorities were also involved, as well as community organizations who are advancing active transportation road safety and injury prevention and other related organizations.

These groups are still involved in the implementation of the Strategy.

Why develop the Strategy?

The Strategy uses a systems-thinking approach to ensure active school travel initiatives have a lasting impact and strong return on investment.

Healthy habits and development start early. Children lay the foundation for their travel habits and perceptions of modes in their childhood.

Children often have fewer transportation options compared to middle-aged adults, and that those with lower income households have even fewer options. The Strategy aims to support a diverse cross section of children in the Metro Vancouver region, recognizing the role we all play in advancing equity and reconciliation.

Who is responsible for implementing the Strategy?

Every stakeholder has a role to implementing the Strategy

Extremely Rare Blue Rock Thrush Spotted in Oregon Might Be the First Ever in the United States

Amateur photographer Michael Sanchez captured photos of the blue-and-chestnut bird on a beach—but he didn’t realize just how special the “mind-bending” encounter was, until later

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Blue bird on the sand

This month, Michael Sanchez picked up photography as a hobby. So, on a recent Sunday morning, he packed up his new camera and headed toward Oregon’s Pacific coast to photograph a waterfall at sunrise.

While Sanchez was clicking away, he noticed a little bird hopping around on the beach. Intrigued, he pointed his lens at the winged creature and started snapping pictures. The bird didn’t seem to mind.

“I’m new to photography, so I’m just kind of taking pictures of everything,” Sanchez tells the Oregonian ’s Michael Russell. “I figured, maybe I’ll catch a picture of it doing something cute. And it was a really good model for me. It sat on the sand for a minute or two while I adjusted my camera, then flew up to the rocks for a few more moments. I was just happy to shoot a bird. Turns out I got a bit more bird for my buck.”

Sanchez didn’t know it at the time, but he’d photographed an extremely rare visitor: a blue rock thrush, among the first ever seen in North America, and likely the first spotted in the United States, per USA Today ’s Eric Lagatta.

Once Sanchez returned to his home in Vancouver, Washington, later that day, he started looking through all the photos he’d captured. In the pre-dawn light, he’d thought the bird was all black—but as he processed the images, the 41-year-old middle school band director realized his feathered friend was mostly bright blue with chestnut-colored breast feathers.

It was only when he posted the photos on social media that he learned just how special the encounter was. Sanchez is not a birder himself, but the birding community quickly brought him up to speed.

Blue rock thrushes live in Europe and Asia. The only other known sighting of one in North America occurred in British Columbia, Canada, in 1997, but birding experts could not determine whether that creature was a wild bird or a caged bird that had been released.

Blue bird on rock

Sanchez photographed the thrush on April 21 at Hug Point State Recreation Site, a 43-acre park on Oregon’s coast, just south of the town of Cannon Beach. It’s roughly 100 miles west of Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon.

Since news of the rare sighting came out, birders have flocked to Hug Point in recent days to see if they can catch a glimpse of the blue rock thrush. But, so far, they haven’t seen it.

How did the little bird end up so far from home? Perhaps it hitched a ride on an ocean-going vessel or, maybe, flew all the way across the Pacific Ocean from Asia. It may also have been blown off course by a storm .

“Maybe this bird individually just has faulty navigation,” says Brodie Cass Talbott , vice president of the Oregon Birding Association and a senior educator with the Bird Alliance of Oregon (formerly Portland Audubon), to the Guardian ’s Maanvi Singh, adding that the sighting is “just sort of mind-bending.”

Birds that are spotted far from their usual habitat, like this one, are known as “ vagrants .” They pop up around the country from time to time, luring birders from far and wide. Scientists have offered many explanations for vagrancy, including geomagnetic disturbances , bad weather or a natural expansion of their typical range .

Separately, another birder spotted a blue rock thrush on the Farallon Islands off the coast of San Francisco on April 25, a few days after Sanchez’s sighting in Oregon. If it’s the same bird, that means the little blue rock thrush traveled roughly 500 miles south in just four days. It’s also possible that two blue rock thrushes just happen to be hanging out on the West Coast at the same time.

“Both [scenarios] are so extremely unlikely that it seems hard to know which is more likely,” Cass Talbott tells USA Today .

Whatever the explanation, Sanchez is now drafting a report about his sighting for the Oregon Bird Records Committee, a group within the Oregon Birding Association that reviews and maintains records of rare birds spotted in the state. The American Birding Association Records Committee will also likely consider Sanchez’s sighting.

“I suspect there will be lengthy discussions about this bird, but my guess is that ultimately this report will be accepted,” says Nolan Clements , a member of the Oregon Bird Records Committee and a conservation scientist at Oregon State University, to KOIN ’s John Ross Ferrara.

In the meantime, Sanchez seems likely to add birding to his growing list of hobbies.

“This really has opened my eyes,” he tells the Guardian . “I guess I’m a birder at this point... I think I’m in the club.”

How to get Billie Eilish tickets

Initial Billie Eilish tickets are sold through Ticketmaster . Tickets are first sold through a pre-sale from Tuesday, April 30 at 12 p.m. ET to Friday, May 3 at 11 a.m. ET. Among those able to access the pre-sale are American Express cardholders. Starting on Friday, May 3 at 12 p.m. ET, tickets will go on sale to the general public on Ticketmaster. Historically, Billie Eilish tickets are snapped up pretty quickly, so fans will want to be waiting in the queue as soon as the sale starts.

Listings for Eilish's shows through resale websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats popped up before the pre-sale started. People are welcome to browse those sites as well, although those tickets are not guaranteed yet.

For the "Hit Me Hard and Soft" world tour, tickets on many dates are not eligible for transfer outside the official Ticketmaster Face Value Exchange program. States like New York, Illinois, Colorado, Virginia, Utah, and Connecticut have laws that don't limit ticket resale, so people can purchase tickets through resale websites for concerts in those regions. For shows outside those states, you'll probably want to stick with buying from the Ticketmaster Face Value Exchange if you cannot get your hands on original standard tickets during the initial sale.

How much are Billie Eilish tickets?

Original Billie Eilish ticket prices vary depending on the date and location within a venue. While Ticketmaster hasn't listed any prices yet, the Heritage Bank Center website (which will host Eilish's Cincinnati, Ohio show on November 8) shared a range of prices. According to the venue's website , tickets start at $59.50 and go up to $499.50.
