Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks History
Back in 1880, a wealthy saw manufacturer called Hamilton Disston purchased four million acres from the Florida governor. Within this purchase was Tarpon Springs. Soon after, a depot was built and the railroads arrived bringing passengers and freight to the Tarpon Springs area. This shortly led to wealthy Northerners to escape the winter by taking a vacation at Tarpon Springs.
A few years later the sponge industry boomed, becoming a very important part of Tarpon Springs’ community. By 1890, the Cheney Sponge Company had sold almost a million dollars worth of sponges in a single year. This led to the arrival of experienced sponge divers from Greece, specifically the Dodecanese islands. These divers used to dive for natural sponges in the Aegean Sea.
As these divers arrived and made Tarpon Springs their new home, so did their culture, language, authentic Greek foods, and even traditions and have remained an important part of Tarpon Springs history till this day.
You can learn more about the history of Tarpon Springs here and here .

Spring and fall seasons tend to be the best time of year to go. Everyone is usually at work or in school so vacations are not as popular this time of year. If you can’t make it during this time of year then I would recommend winter months next. Florida tends to stay warm pretty much all year long so you can enjoy anything outdoors all year round. However, going in the summer means more crowds, more tourists, and a higher heat index.

About Tarpon Springs
The first settlers in the area now known as Tarpon Springs were A.W. Ormond and his daughter, Mary. They arrived in 1876. They built a cabin near Spring Bayou. J.C. Boyer, an adventurer from Nassau, sailed into the Bayou. He and Mary Ormond were soon married.
One year after the arrival of the Ormonds, George Inness, an American landscape artist, discovered the beauty in the Bayou. He and his son, George, Jr., painted the scenes found in the area.
Mary was very pleased with her home. She especially liked the great fish that inhabited the Bayou. They would leap into the air and spray water. In 1879, she named the small settlement Tarpon Springs. (Actually the fish were mullet, not tarpon!)
In 1880, Hamilton Disston, a wealthy saw manufacture, bought four million acres of the central west coast of Florida from the Governor for 25 cents an acre. This saved the state from bankruptcy. Included in the purchase was Tarpon Springs.
In 1884, a post office was established in Tarpon Springs. Soon the railroad arrived and a depot was built to accommodate passengers and freight. Through the efforts and investments of Disston, Tarpon Springs was fashioned into an exclusive winter resort for wealthy Northerners.
The early sponge divers created a need at the docks for eating places for the boat crews. Then as news of the industry grew, people began coming to the docks to see the sponges. Shops opened so people could buy the sponges and other souvenirs.
Sponge buyers created the Sponge Exchange in 1907. A building with a courtyard was erected in which each sponger could store his catch while awaiting the auctions that took place twice a week.
With the perfection of deep-sea diving equipment, the dollar amount of sponge harvests continued to increase. Divers were able to go deeper into the sea for longer lengths of time. For 30 years, the sponge industry was the largest industry in Florida—larger than citrus or tourism. Tarpon Springs was known as the “Sponge Capital of the World.”
In the 1940s, blight reduced the growth of sponges. By the 1950s, sponging as a profitable industry was nearly wiped out. However in the 1980s, new sponge beds were found. Now, Tarpon Springs is back to being a leader in the world’s natural sponge market. All aspects of the sponge industry are available to view in Tarpon Springs, from the harvesting of the sponges, all the way to the auctions that are now held weekly at the Sponge Docks.
In addition to seeing the history of sponge harvesting, visitors can experience the Greek influence. Greek restaurants and shops are scattered throughout the area. Seafood, Greek salads, and pastries are particularly popular. Many visitors attend Greek Festivals. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral was modeled after the great Byzantine cathedrals such as St. Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople and is open daily to visitors.
Today, Spring Bayou, site of the first settlement, is still a delightful place. Visitors can stroll along the winding streets and see houses that reflect the grandeur of the wealthy who came to Tarpon Springs each year to escape the harsh Northern winters. Tarpon Springs still has a peacefulness and quaint charm.

Tarpon Springs - Florida
In 1887, Tarpon Springs was incorporated. It had a population of 52 residents. John Cheney, a promoter associated with Disston, discovered money could be made by harvesting the sponges growing in the waters of the Gulf. Although Tarpon Springs was successful as a resort, it wasn’t long before the sponge industry became the community’s most important industry.
By 1890, the sponge industry was firmly established in Tarpon Springs. The Cheney Sponge Company sold almost a million dollars worth of sponges that year.
In the next few years, experienced divers from Greece were brought to Tarpon Springs. By using rubberized diving suits and helmets, they increased harvests. By 1905, over 500 Greek sponge divers were at work using 50 boats.
About the Anclote River
Anclote, an island on the southwest coast of Florida; also, a river flowing into the gulf at that locality dates back to early Spanish times. The Spaniards called these islands Cabo de Anclote because ships had to use a kedge to winch their way through the shallow water or the winding channels. And early French sailors called the islands Cap d’Anclote, which, of course, has the same meaning as Cabo de Anclote.
After the close of the Civil War, Frederic Meyer in 1867 settled at Anclote about one and one half miles north of the river, about 100 yards west of the Anclote cemetery. He was later followed a few months later by his brother, Franklin B. Meyer.
At the Anclote river mouth, a historian has it that there exist a clear sparkling spring only 25 feet from the beach where early buccaneers watered their ships and it’s called the “Spanish Well”. The “Spanish Well” was discovered by Vasco da Gama and Pinida early in the 16th century.
In 1528, Since the Spaniards had treated the Indians with great disgust, the Indians fought back with ever weapon they could when Pantilo Narvez attempted to water his ships at the “Spanish Well.”. Narvez tried to show the Indians his peaceful gesture but was not accepted by the Indians which gave him no other option than to give up and sail away.
Tarpon Spring did not exist until about 1875, so Tampa was the closest town that was only accessible through the forest. But Tarpon Springs became a city when the railroad was built through it and ended the dream of Anclote continuing to grow as the main community.
Today, Anclote is a center for vacationer with it’s quiet shady streets and it’s people are satisfied with picnics, fishing and sailing their boats in the gulf and fishing down the river.
The river is endowed with saw grass marshes, sea oats, and mangroves and is one of few unspoiled lands in our coastal area.
On the gulf side of the island is a beautiful, unspoiled white sand beach stretching from the northern end all the way to the southern tip. On both the northern and southern extreme ends of the island are shallow areas that are constantly shifting due to currents and hurricanes.
The natural flora and fauna of Anclote is unique. There are ponds in the woods that have phosphorescent algae that literally glows in the dark. As you traverse across the Anclote River numerous
trees like oak, bay, magnolia, palmetto, and palm are adorned by yellow Jasmin, Spanish moss, and air plants. This natural work of art gets reflected on the clear waters of the river, along the shores, to make for a truly captivating sight.
As you pass across the clear waters you might see alligators sunbathing on the sandy banks or on dry logs, sometimes rapidly moving into the waters. You will see animals such as turtles, an eclectic array of large fishes in their underwater habitat, and different kinds of birds such as cranes, herons and other colorful birds, singing and playing, both above you and wading in crystal waters of this peaceful sanctuary.
The Anclote River is of great historical and natural importance. It has been on the maps since the mid-1500s. The river passes through the northern boundaries of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and eventually flows into the Gulf of Mexico. It makes its way from deep remote sources and across miles of elevated banks that are lush with tropical foliage. Spend a Day at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks – Florida’s Greek City
Last Updated: November 7, 2022 // by Ashley Smith 24 Comments
Spending a day at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks on Florida’s Gulf Coast is a perfect example of what I like to call Inception Traveling (patent pending). This has nothing to do with the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio hijacks all of my REM sleep, I promise, but more accurately refers to the fact that I like to travel… within traveling.
When I can’t travel abroad I seek out the next best thing– abroad but actually a-close . As an expert escape artist, I’m able to incorporate this practice into a large segment of my travelife.
In addition to the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, some other examples would be my annual trips to Orlando for the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival where I can visit 20+ countries in one day, my penchant for getting lost in New York City’s Chinatown, visiting Cuba without ever leaving Ybor City, Tampa .

Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks
I discovered the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks while living in central Florida, between Latin dance classes and Flamenco shows if I remember correctly. All thanks to a friend who shares all of my inception wishes and DiCaprio dreams.
Five years later, I still mandate a visit to the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks on every trip to Florida, followed by the obligatory food coma.
What are the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks?
Tarpons Springs, Florida is home to the highest percentage of Greek Americans anywhere in the United States. (And yet, John Stamos continues to elude me.)
The Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks is a quaint Greek community proud of their sponge-diving past and of that cheese they set on fire at your table. I’m quite proud of them for that too, actually.
The area is full of retail shops, restaurants and bakeries, attractions, and spelling errors, all with a Greek twist.
History of the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks
A long time ago in a strange galaxy of its own known as “Florida,” the city of Tarpon Springs became home to the multi-million dollar industry of sponges. And if you’re anything like me, you just said “Huuuhhh??” in your best Tim “the Toolman” Taylor voice.
The history of sponge diving dates back to ancient times on the Dodecanese island of Kalymnos in the Aegean Sea. In the beginning, divers would dive naked (for reasons both unknown and uncontested by me). They would remain underwater for up to five minutes gathering sponges. Not unlike when I drop mine in the shower and I’ve got shampoo in my eyes.
If you want more historic Florida, head up and over to St. Augustine–the oldest city in the United States. For what all you can see, do, eat, and drink, check out my full guide to 1 day in St. Augustine .
Introduction of the diving suit
In 1865 the diving suit was introduced and the world of nail salon fish tanks would never be the same. There go the Greeks again… just inventing stuff and blazing trails. Sheesh, let someone else have a crack at improving humanity for once?
The sponge industry finally found its way to Tarpon Springs in the 1880s. By 1905, Greek businessman John Cocoris had done the same.
He recruited all his pals from back home to come experience the American dream. That is, of risking your life to decompression sickness so that others may be clean in places where the sun don’t shine. It worked, and immigrants began pouring in from the Greek Islands to take advantage of the bounty and to presumably shout Opa! a lot to passersby.
Sponge diving in Florida
Sponge diving quickly became one of the leading maritime industries in Florida, just ahead of booze cruises and training seagulls to steal wallets, an industry that went down the tube as soon as Doritos were invented.
By the 1930s the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks were generating millions of dollars a year in sponges. Again, yes, sponges! Fast forward almost a century and here we are at my go-to spot for delicious food and authentic Greek culture in America.
Why sponges?
Well, since you asked… turns out, sponging is a near-perfect business model.
Using special knives, divers remove the sponges about an inch from their bases. This allows the sponge to regenerate fully, creating an economical and sustainable product.
Even better, this harvesting method actually increases future sponge output. It actually promotes the individual sponges to grow back larger and healthier than they were to begin with. Even discarded, broken-off sponge pieces will reattach themselves to the ocean floor and begin regeneration.
Can your $2.99 Target loofah say that?
Where are the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks?
The Tarpon Springs Sponge docks are located on Florida’s Gulf Coast in Tarpon Springs, Florida–just about a 45-minute drive north of Clearwater .
This map illustrates just where in Florida you can find the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks and also that we should all really be spending more time in The Bahamas –look at that water! Google Earth, you had me at turquoise!
If you like local cultural hubs, you might be interested to check out nearby Ybor City in Tampa–the U.S.’s first true Cuban neighborhood. Check out my post on how to spend a day in Ybor City .
Things to do at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks
As you can imagine, the tourism industry at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks is mildly centered around sponges. Mildly? Oh, I meant wildly .
The Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks are incredibly walkable. You can park your car in one of the dirt cheap lots and you can spend the whole day on foot. For instance, check out:
Sponges. Sponges everywhere.
- There are sponge gift shops galore where you can find sponges in all shapes, sizes, colors, and prices. Even a $600 sponge if you need some serious exfoliation.
- There’s the Spongeorama Sponge Factory that boasts the world’s largest collection of natural sea sponges.
- At the Sponge Factory is also the Sponge Museum where you can learn everything I’ve already told you in this post… but in museum form.
- You can take sponge diving tours of your own on the St. Nicholas Boat Line . This cruise takes you around the sponge docks, and a live diver in a traditional diving suit will show you how it’s done and talk more about sponge harvesting and the history of the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks.
Go shopping
The Tarpon Springs Sponge docks are full of quaint little shopping streets where you can find tons of gift shops, clothing stores, specialty food and drink items, live seafood, and much more. Oh, and sponges.
Take a tour
- Besides the sponge diving tours, you can also take one of Spongeorama’s popular dolphin cruises or sunset cruises (because if there’s two things Florida knocks outta the park).
- Check out this 2-hour Eco Kayaking Tour around Tarpon Springs that leaves right there from the Sponge Docks. Learn all about Florida’s awesome wildlife from an expert guide and see some pretty great stuff while you’re out there! I’m a huge fan of kayaking tours and this one has all 5-star reviews !
- Other great ways to see and learn about the Sponge Docks is on this private bicycle tour of Tarpon Springs or by taking this easy walking tour . (They actually call it a ‘stroll.’)
Got motion sickness? If you’ve tried everything but haven’t found a solution, check out my post on the permanent motion sickness cure that changed my life! One of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Eat Greek food
The fact that the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks is the United States’s largest Greek community brings with it some of the most delicious food in Florida. Don’t miss this – I promise you’ll be bak(…lava) for more!
Where to eat at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks
There are plennnty of gorge-worthy Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks restaurants but my big, fat, Greek favorite is Hellas Restaurant and Bakery .
I wish I was one of those foodie types who was able to describe to you how fantastic their food is, or even show you with a photo or two, but food blogging is immersive and meticulous and I have the patience of a child on Christmas morning following Grandma down the stairs. Too. Hungry. Must. Eat. Nom nom nom.
Instead, I’ll just give you my regular order:
- Mythos (beer)
- Saganaki–the imported Greek cheese they set aflame with a shot of ouzo and the magic Greek word that makes everything taste better, Opa!
- A massive platter of Spanikopita (aka, the “What do you mean, you don’t eat no meat ?)
- An order of baklava from the bakery next door (with a glass of milk if I’m feeling really saucy)
- and finally, a gurney to be wheeled out on
You can, and should, view their full restaurant menu here . The Hellas Restaurant and Bakery is a favorite of everyone who visits the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks and it’s right there on the main road–you can’t miss it.
So much blue–the color of Windex, you might say.
How to get to the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks
The Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks are an easy drive from everywhere in Florida. You have GPS, you know. Florida’s just an easy place to navigate. It’s like a dream for us Bostonians those of us who live in Boston but aren’t originally from here.
Once here, parking is not an issue. You can park on the streets, in lots that charge only a couple of bucks for an entire day, and some businesses (like Spongeorama) offer free parking if you’re taking one of their tours.
Additionally, you can even take the Jolley Trolley all the way here from Clearwater and many places between–also for just a few dollars. The Jolley Trolley is an easy, fun, and cheap way to get around this part of the Gulf Coast – check out the Jolley Trolley website here.
Where to stay near the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks
Being that the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks are just a short drive north of Clearwater, I can’t recommend staying in Clearwater Beach enough. (Check out where to stay for all budgets in my post on a weekend in Clearwater .)
The Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks make such a great day trip from Clearwater you don’t necessarily need to stay here. But , if you want to, you can find great deals at:
Fairfield Inn & Suites
This hotel has an “awesome” guest rating (their words, not mine), an outdoor pool (a must in Florida), has free WiFi and free parking, and is just an 8-minute drive to the Sponge Docks. Read reviews on Tripadvisor , then book your room here .
Hampton Inn in Dunedin
Almost a perfect 10 as far as guest reviews go and halfway between Clearwater and Tarpon Springs is a great place to be. Also with free parking, free WiFi, and a pool, they also have a convenient snack area. Read reviews on Tripadvisor , then book your room here .
For time-budget travelers like myself who can’t always get to the other side of the planet and back over a three-day weekend, inception travel is a viable alternative. And if it’s Greek you want, the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks are as authentic as you can get this side of Nia Vardalos.

9 Things to Do at the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs
Your guide to the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks
Tarpon Springs has so much to offer. It is the oldest city in Pinellas, founded in 1887, and boasts 1 million visitors a year.
It has a small, but impressive aquarium, and 2 easily accessible beaches with Fred Howard Park and Sunset Beach, and a lively downtown. However, it’s perhaps best known for an area stretching less than 1 mile fondly called the Sponge Docks.
Once a hub of the sponging industry, the Sponge Docks today are full of kitschy shops, Greek culture and sponge history.
We’re two local moms and we write about all the family fun happening in Pinellas. The sponge docks were a place we visited often as kids growing up here and our family recently did a whole day at the Sponge Docks with three kids to research this article.
We hope that it will help you plan your next Sponge Docks visit. Let’s dive in!
General Information
Tarpon Springs started as a sponge industry hub in the last 1800s. Sponging boomed in the area thanks for Greek immigrants (source: Tarpon Springs Historical Society ), which is why you’ll find a unique blend Greek culture and sponging history at the Sponge Docks.
Tourism has now replaced sponging as Tarpon’s big money maker, thanks in part of people visiting the Sponge Docks. Today you’ll find lots of Greek restaurants, unique shops and sponge industry history at the docks.
Parking at the Sponge Docks
There are lots of parking options at the Sponge Docks, including free parking and paid lots.
If you’re up for searching a little, there are free parking options and street parking but they’re more limited. Head towards the end of the docks by the waterfront to look for street parking on the side roads.
If you eat at a restaurant, many of those also offer free parking to customers.
You’ll also find many pay-to-park options with reasonable daily rates. Note that the paid parking prices vary so don’t necessarily go for the first lot you see if it seems pricy.
Things to Do at the Tarpon Sponge Docks
1. sea monkey vintage.
This amazing throwback store gives parents a unique opportunity to share with their children sweet memories of toys, movies, and products popular in the 80s and 90s.
2. Jolly Trolley
You can hop on and off the Jolly Trolley from several locations in the area. The Jolly Trolley can be used to travel all the way to Clearwater.
The Jolly Trolley holds a special place for us because we used it as our wedding transport. Now it is a great activity for the kids that they love.
3. Dimitri’s on the Water
No trip to the sponge docks is complete without some Greek food. Dimitri’s on the Water is a delicious restaurant, though possibly on the fancier side for some families.
It has an amazing view outside right on the water of the docks. The best part? The waitresses throw the tables’ extra bread in the water for the fish which was a very memorable experience for my kids.
4. Sunset at Rusty Bellies
Rusty Bellies Waterfront Grill is the best place from the Sponge Docks to watch the sunset at the docks.
You don’t have to eat at the restaurant to enjoy the sunset there. They have an open space next to the restaurant that allows people to walk out on the dock.
Note, it is not a clear unobstructed sunset as it would be at the beach, but it is a great experience just the same.
5. Spongeorama Sponge Factory & Museum
Spongeorama Sponge Factory is a store that also houses a small museum in honor of natural sponges. They have the alleged largest natural sponge collection in the world.
If you grew up in the area like we did, you’ll probably get a nostalgic kick out of seeing the same sponge dock video still playing on a loop (it’s free to watch during your visit).
They also have some fun things for kids to check out, like a hat-shaped sponge you can wear and other interesting specimens.
6. Try Saganaki – Greek flaming cheese
Saganaki is a fried cheese Greek appetizer which is both delicious and a cool experience. Many places will flambée halloumi cheese at your table so it is a flaming dish that is exciting for kids (and adults too, let’s be real).
Our favorite place for this is Mr. Souvlaki , a local institution that’s been around for decades. Mr. Souvlaki is technically not on the Sponge Docks but is only a block away on Pinellas Ave.
Many local places do a version of flaming cheese. If you want to stay on the Sponge docks, you can also find it at Hellas.
What trip to the Sponge Docks is complete without some baklava? If your kids are like mine, “sugar!” is always a hit so this one is a no brainer.
Thanks to Tarpon’s Greek culture, you can find amazing baklava and pastries on the docks. Hellas, one of the more popular restaurants on the docks, has an adjoining bakery where you can find baklava.
8. Take a tour
There are a number of boat tours that leave from the Tarpon Sponge Docks. Many of them will take you out to the beautiful offshore islands and other Tarpon landmarks. These tours are nice for visitors who may otherwise not boat in our area.
9. Candy Shop or Ice Cream
There are several places for ice cream at the sponge docks as well as a fun candy shop called Candy Barrel. Your kids can pick out several treats and keep the price minimum.
Not too far from the docks
There are a couple places amazing for kids within 3 miles from the sponge docks.
1. Tarpon Splash Pad
At the end of your Sponge Docks day, head over to the awesome Tarpon Springs Splash Park to cool off. It is one of the best splash pads in Pinellas and it is only 3-minutes away from the docks.
And don’t forget to check out our full review the Tarpon splash pad before you go.
2. Replay Museum
This arcade boasts 120 games. For a cover on entry its all free play inside.

Tarpon Springs FL was supposedly named because of area sightings of tarpon fish jumping out of the Gulf of Mexico waters. It was incorporated in 1887 with a population of 52.
It is a land comprised of bayous along its gulf coast, rolling hills, and Lake Tarpon towards the east. In its earlier years, the land was covered by pine trees which added a balsamic scent to its air. It became known as a desirable place to live for winter vacationers and permanent residents and attracted people for its beauty, hunting, fishing, and industry.
Earlier on, Tarpon Springs became known for having a steamboat landing at the mouth of its bayou, which added importance to it’s location. The landing was at the beginning of Tarpon Avenue, which extended to Lake Butler, now called Lake Tarpon. Along this road the main business district was built. Later, the Orange Belt Railway also extended to its location.
The Sponge Industry began to be formed before 1890 and by 1894 was reported to be of importance and an industry valued at one million dollars a year. The Anclote and Rock Island companies had their headquarters here in Tarpon Springs and were increasing it’s fleets and number of men.
In 1897 John Cheyney employed John Cocoris, a Greek businessman, to purchase sponges. Cocoris used a diving suit that allows it’s user to spend considerably more time underwater harvesting sponges.
In 1905 John Cocoris performed the first mechanized sponge dive and in that same year, the first Greek immigrants arrive. In 1907 The Tarpon Springs Sponge Exchange was formed.
Many Greeks began coming to this area from the Greek Dodecanese Islands. Therefore, the name of the main road along the docks now being Dodecanese Blvd. They brought their families and culture. With time, they became the largest harvesters of natural sponge in the world and the largest Greek population in the U.S.
In 1939 the sponge fields were killed by a marine disease and the industry took years to recover from this ordeal.
After many years of hard work, that continues to this day and the popularity of its unique atmosphere and culture, it has become a must visit place for tourists and locals alike.
On January 6th, the Greek Orthodox Church celebrates the day of Epiphany. A day to bless the water and the boats. A wooden cross is thrown into the water, onto which local boys jump in to search for it in a blessed year for the finder’s reward.
Along the docks, there are many Greek restaurants and stores with authentic Greek food and items along with shells and sponges.
Aside from the Greek community itself, which is fascinating to outsiders, are the sponges themselves. If you know about sponges, you know that natural sponges for some matters are highly preferred over synthetic ones.
The wool sponge (as it’s known) has the ability when used with baking soda to kill 100% of the bacteria it swipes. It’s a very soft sponge also favored for use on babies’ skin. Loofa sponges are great for bathing and make an excellent, authentic souvenir for yourself or any special person in your life.
The sponge industry has been reporting record harvests partially due to the fact that they leave a good portion of the stem of the sponge intact when harvesting to allow for rapid growth.
Come to Tarpon Springs and visit our sponge docks, shops, and eateries. Enjoy a few hours of exploring a wonderful Greek enclave on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. It’s a very unique experience. We do not allow guests to take any live shells on our boat.

The history of the Sponge Docks begins with John Cheyney founded the first sponge business in Tarpon Springs in the 1880s. His success attracted sponge divers from Greece and it provided quite a few jobs for the local economy. The sponges were harvested off the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico using surface boats and long poles to bring up the sponges. In 1905 John Cocoris came to town and introduced sponge diving to the industry. This deep sea diving technique used a special suit and a diving helmet with air pumped in from a compressor on the boat. He brought in divers from Greece and the sponge industry soon became one of the biggest businesses in Florida and required more and more divers. Many of the original divers came from the Dodecanese Islands of Kalymnos, Symi and Halki. The street that runs along the sponge docks on the river is named Dodecanese Boulevard. Many more Greeks came to Tarpon to open restaurants, candy stores, coffee houses, taverns and grocery stores Thousands of Greeks stayed in Tarpon Springs and they helped to build the city. Today the area along the Sponge Docks is an interesting tourist destination with hundreds of shops, bakeries, restaurants and other businesses with mostly Greek themes. There are museums, statues, plaques and other reminders of the area's unique history. The Sponge Docks is still a working waterfront that is home to the remaining sponge boats and a large fleet of shrimpers. If you visit Tarpon Springs, the Sponge Docks are a must!
Great walk and plenty of little bars, cafes, and restaurants to choose from-- Some places will have outside entertainment- which is nice... It's missing a hotel
I enjoyed my day walking around checking out the docks! Lived in Tampa all my life and never been here until now. There are several lots where you pay to park. First lot we came to was $12 fits all day parking. If you want cheaper parking there is a $5 lot however it's packed so I'm sure you'll have to get there early to grab a spot. There are so many shops with souvenirs and soap and sponges. You even pass by boats that have freshly caught sponges hanging out to dry. There are also many eateries such as Hellas, Yiannis, Rusty Bellies to name a few. There is even a small little boutique where you can get henna done. Fun day out with the fam.

I love shopping at the sponge docks every time I'm near Tarpon Springs. The dolphin cruises are fun, too.
Love walking along the sponge docks watching the boats come in. Lots of sponge shops and sports bars along the way. It was a beautiful afternoon and the docks were very crowded. Previously we've gone out on the boats for tours, it was well done.

What a fun day for a day trip to tarpon springs sponge docks. We happened yo arrive when they pulled in and we're sorting out all the sponges. Very cool! It's a small strip of restaurants and gift shops near the water. They even have some boat excursions We would have but most were 2 hours and seemed like a long time. Enjoyed the day there as usual and will be back soon.
Fun day! Cruises to see sponge diving areas and others to watch dolphins. Many shops to buy your local memorabilia. Great restaurants and Greek cuisine. Bakery was very tasty.
Fun place to visit. Picturesque views of the waterway and boats unloading its cache of newly harvested sponges. Delicious Greek bakeries and numerous Greek restaurants. Some intriguing shops tucked away from the main thoroughfare.

Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US and the sponge docks are where you will take it all in. In the 1880s, John K. Cheyney founded the first local sponge business. A few Greek immigrants also arrived in this city during the 1890s to work in the sponge industry.
