NSHSS at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 2023
The National Society of High School Scholars teamed up with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and ALSAC to bring a group of our members to the St. Jude campus in Memphis, Tennessee, for a member event designed specifically to explore all aspects of careers in healthcare.
At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils, and with boiling water comes steam, and with steam, you can power a train. One extra degree makes all the difference! Since its inception, ALSAC SJCRH has always embraced the extra degree, going above and beyond with the patient family experience, medical research, sharing information, volunteer/donor experience, and employee experience.
Participating members had an opportunity to visit the St. Jude campus and learn about St. Jude's history, leadership, career paths at ALSAC SJCRH, and the extra effort it takes to be truly successful. Students heard from St. Jude Faculty, ALSAC Fundraising Staff, and the ALSAC Global team. They enjoyed a walking tour of the hospital campus, participated in a team event, and gained insights on career paths and the research hospital's service model. At the end of the event, all NSHSS Members were recognized on stage during the Member Recognition Ceremony and received an honor medallion for academic excellence!

Dream Home Giveaway: Meet one St. Jude researcher working to end childhood cancer
Nikitha nimmagadda is a senior researcher at st. jude children’s research hospital.
MEMPHIS (KBTX) - St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is at the forefront of developing treatments thanks to the tireless work of researchers on campus.
Nikitha Nimmagadda is a Senior Researcher at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She does genome editing for sickle cell disease.
“Gene editing just helps do precise editing with the stem cells from the patient so it’s more of a precision medicine for the patient,” Nimmagadda said.
The treatments she works on are aimed at replacing the blood system in a patient, periodically, to help them fight sickle cell disease.
Recently, she volunteered at Family Commons on campus at St. Jude and interacted with the kids there going through treatment.
“When I introduced myself and told them that I’m working on gene editing, especially for sickle cell disease, they were so excited because it gives them hope that there is a treatment that someone is working on -- that can help them have a better life and have a longer life.”
Nimmagadda came to St. Jude after completing her masters in India. She says she was drawn to the hospital because of the mission set forth by Danny Thomas more than 60 years ago.
“I think St. Jude is a passion to me. It’s about every single person I see around me is so passionate and I don’t see that in many workplaces. I think St. Jude is a place where anyone can come, feel comfortable, do the work, and feel recognized,” Nimmagadda said.
Her work and the subsequent treatments she and other researchers develop at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital cannot be done without the generosity of donors.
“St. Jude is a place where your money will not go to waste. Your money, every single penny that you contribute toward St. Jude, is actively taken towards the patients and the research that helps the patients become better and have a better life,” Nimmagadda said.
You can be one of those donors and be eligible to win a brand-new house in the process.

‘God is so good’: Toddler released from hospital after nearly drowning in backyard pool
EVANSVILLE, Ind. ( WFIE /Gray News) - An Indiana family says their child is going home after spending nearly a week in the hospital following a near drowning.
On Friday, family and friends shared that 1-year-old Ayko was discharged from Norton’s Children’s Hospital in Kentucky.
“God is so good. Welcome home Ayko,” a family friend shared on a GoFundMe for the boy.
WFIE previously reported the 1-year-old was rushed to the hospital on May 3 after he fell into the family’s backyard pool.
The toddler’s parents, China and Alex, said their boy was strong while he continued to fight.
“Ayko is making positive progress. He is a very strong baby, and we know he isn’t going to stop fighting until he is back home with us. Please keep praying for our boy,” the parents previously shared in a statement.
On Tuesday, Ayko’s grandmother Cheyenne shared that Ayko had begun breathing on his own and was off medications for the first time since being hospitalized.
“Thank you, God, for our miracle!!” she wrote online.
The family thanked everyone for their support as the fundraiser has received over $22,000 in donations.
Friends said the boy’s parents are “truly the sweetest people and the absolute best parents.”
“Alex & China wanted me to share a huge thank you to all the first responders and medical staff that made this possible,” fundraiser organizer Colleen Watters said.
Authorities did not immediately share how the boy fell into the pool but said no foul play was suspected.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

In the turbulent 1960s, St. Jude made headlines as the South's first fully integrated children's hospital. Founder Danny Thomas promised medical care regardless of a family's race, creed or financial circumstances. Today, as in 1962, no family receives a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
