For decades, Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek: The Next Generation has represented an ideal of greatness to science fiction fandom, a character of intelligence, authority, and empathy. Beginning on September 9th, comic book and graphic novel publisher IDW invites readers to witness what the galaxy could be like at the mercy of a Captain Picard whose greatness is measured in cunning and cruelty, courtesy of an all-new event, Star Trek: The Mirror War .

Celebrated Star Trek comic writers Scott and David Tipton delve deep into the lore of the Mirror Universe, a perennial favorite concept amongst fans, in August’s Star Trek: The Mirror War #0, illustrated by Carlos Nieto. This zero issue features a new story of “Mirror Picard” as he’s summoned to Earth to face the wrath of his emperor, deftly weaving threads from past Mirror Universe tales in a way entertaining to newcomers and the initiated alike.

Star Trek: The Mirror War

Following September’s #0 launch, the series will continue to build year-long tension with issues #1-8 and four interspersed tie-in specials, each highlighting a different member of the Next Generation cast. The first spin-off one-shot, slated for December, will focus on Data. Once complete, the 13-part saga will chart Mirror Picard’s path of conquest across all of the Mirror Universe, stoking the wrath of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance along the way.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to return to the Mirror Universe,” says Scott Tipton. “What’s in store for our Mirror Jean-Luc Picard and his Enterprise crew? New faces, new places, and old grudges. Picard’s ambitions are grander than ever, and nothing short of the throne itself will satisfy him!”

“In The Mirror War , we’ll be seeing what happens when Picard gets hold of information that can change the fortunes of the debilitated Terran Empire,” says David Tipton. “The Enterprise crew will find themselves in positions of potential power and wealth like never before.”

Star Trek: The Mirror War

“With Mirror Broken , Through the Mirror , and Terra Incognita , Scott and David Tipton — along with our Mirror War series cover artist J.K. Woodward — crafted a compelling and wholly original corner of the Star Trek universe. We’re excited to continue that tradition with The Mirror War , all while bringing new artists and storytellers into those Trek landscapes that fans love,” says editor Megan Brown.

Star Trek: The Mirror War #0 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, including Cover A by series artist Carlos Nieto, Cover B by Ejiwa “Edge” Ebenebe, and a Retailer Incentive edition by Bex Glendining. Starting with issue #1, J.K. Woodward will be providing cover artwork for every issue.

The previous three stories featured Captain Jean-Luc Picard, commander of the warship  Enterprise , one of the last ships in the dwindling Terran Empire — as the once-powerful nation has found itself reduced in size after the Cardassian-Klingon Alliance became the Alpha Quadrant’s dominant power.

IDW Launching ‘Star Trek: The Mirror War’ Year-Long Comics Series

star trek mirror wars

| May 19, 2021 | By: Joe Andosca 10 comments so far

IDW is wrapping up their two-year-long Star Trek: Year Five series this summer , and today they just announced a brand new year-long series to follow that up, with a return to the 24th century’s Mirror Universe.

Star Trek: The Mirror War

The classic Star Trek episode “Mirror, Mirror” introduced The Mirror Universe and Terran Empire, and various Trek shows revisited this dark and dangerous place in the decades since. We never saw Star Trek: The Next Generation’s take on the Mirror Universe on television, but IDW has been showing us a vision of Mirror TNG starting with Mirror Broken in 2017. And beginning on “Star Trek Day” (September 8th), the Star Trek comics publisher returns with a new series where they invite readers “to witness what the galaxy could be like at the mercy of a Captain Picard whose greatness is measured in cunning and cruelty.”

Star Trek: The Mirror War brings back writers Scott and David Tipton, who have penned IDW’s three previous TNG-era Mirror Universe miniseries.

The series will kick off a month early in August with a special Star Trek: The Mirror War #0 issue illustrated by Carlos Nieto. This zero issue features a new story of “Mirror Picard” as he’s summoned to Earth to face the wrath of his emperor, deftly weaving threads from past Mirror Universe tales in a way entertaining to both newcomers and the initiated alike.

Star Trek: The Mirror War #0 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy: Cover A by series artist Carlos Nieto, Cover B by Ejiwa “Edge” Ebenebe, and a Retailer Incentive edition by Bex Glendining. Starting with issue #1, J.K. Woodward will be providing cover artwork for every issue.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Showrunner Explains Why They Reopened A TNG Mystery To Start Season 5

I think this will be fun, even though none of IDW’s mirror titles have really made any sense in the context of the TV shows. The Starfleet that exists in the Tiptons comics doesn’t jibe with what we saw on Deep Space Nine at all. I have still enjoyed them, but they’re wholly incompatible with the shows. The only way to really view their mirror tales is as another mirror universe separate from the one on TV.

IDK. I agree that the comics are very enjoyable, but I san see how they tie into what we know from DS9. I have always assumed that these comics are showing the remnants of the Terran Empire (years before what we see in DS9). Since we never see the Empire in DS9, it could be that it is now a 3rd rate power in the galaxy (only a handful of systems, limited resources).

Given Wesley’s age, though, it can’t be years before DS9.

I think it works. Terok Nor is on the outskirts, and the Empire in the comics is represented as basically locked down to Earth or maybe a small are around it IIRC.

I just hope this isn’t the only thing they’ll have running for a while. I’m happy to see IDW continue with Trek and I was wondering what, if anything, would replace Year Five . The Mirror specials have been kind of fun, but… it’s not really what I come to Trek for.

I tend to agree with you. I like the mirror saga and the Tiptons are good at what they do, but there’s just too much of it. IDW keeps dipping into that well, and it’s getting a bit tiring.

it’s not really what I come to  Trek  for.

Finally, someone who agrees with me!

It was stated at some point in the previous Tipton’s MU comics that all that remains of the Terran Empire is localized to the Terran system (i.e. Earth). The arc of one of the series (the one focusing mainly on Picard) was all about him attempting to steal the Big E to go on the offensive against the Klingon-Cardassian alliance. Thus, while we were told in DS9 that the Empire had collapsed, we weren’t told if there was any remnants of it left – and that’s what these comics are all about.

Looking forward to this! I enjoyed the previous IDW mirror series. Wish I had a lot more of IDWs stuff.

are they going to continue the reboot comics or was boldly go the last of them? Is the Kelvin timeline a dead IP. Because i’ve waited for some new books, comics or a movie and nothing has been done. The only thing after Beyond were the Boldly go comics. A new video game that is actually good would be welcome as well.

I love all things Star Trek. I honestly do and I’ll keep reading the comics and the novels, just as I’ll keep watching the shows. But they’ve so overdone the mirror universe concept. It’s time to stop treading water in this alternate universe. IDW, please move on to other stories. I want to go back to loving what you do.

Star Trek: Mirror War #0 Review: Oh, how the mighty mirror Picard has fallen

star trek mirror wars

Review: Star Trek: Mirror War #0

Following a crushing defeat in Through The Mirror and the critical loss of a crew member in Terra Incognita, the ISS Enterprise’s crew find themselves at their lowest point yet. Constantly stalked by their enemies, constantly harassed by the Empire for their lack of results, Picard and his crew chance upon a potential breakthrough, but is it too late? The Tiptons’ exceptional writing and the promising art of Carlos Nieto kick off the year-long journey in the Mirror War with menace and intrigue.

STAR TREK: MIRROR WAR #0 regular cover by Carlos Nieto

The last time we saw the Terran TNG crew, was in January 2019, and Star Trek: Terra Incognita was concluding with issue 6. This miniseries, the third in the TNG Mirror Universe saga, ended on a cliffhanger and for all intents and purposes even though an update of a sequel felt imminent, we received no news on its future from IDW. The series disappeared for over two years like a Klingon bird of prey. In May 2021, to everyone’s pleasant surprise, the sequel – Mirror War – was announced with Scott Tipton and David Tipton , writers of all three prequels, returning and Carlos Nieto taking over the interior art. We learned that the series’ co-creator JK Woodward would grace the series as well with cover art from issue one onward. My adoration for Woodward’s art is well documented on this site but one look at his cover art is enough to confirm that they alone make every issue worth the cover price. But I digress.

Catch me up, Scotty

Spoilers for Star Trek: Mirror Broken, through The Mirror and Terra Incognita, follow. The one-line summaries here won’t do justice to the full experience of reading the three prequels to Mirror War but they’re necessary for new readers to understand the context of our new series. In Mirror Broken we are introduced to Terran Picard who puts together a crew to steal the Empire’s new secret weapon: the I.S.S Enterprise. In Through The Mirror the crew, now in possession of the ship and with a plan to build an unconquerable fleet to fight the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, jumps to the Prime Universe to steal their Enterprise. In Terra Incognita after the Terran Enterprise retreats in defeat without a ship, unbeknownst to everyone, Terran Reginald Barclay has snuck on Enterprise Prime. He gets up to all kinds of shenanigans with the innocent Prime Enterprise’s crew.

Mirror War 0 picks up some time before Terra Incognita ‘s events begin but this time in the Mirror Universe. Picard and his teammates, once hailed as the beacon of renewed hope for the Empire in their fight against the Alliance, are now scavenging abandoned ships in hopes of finding table scraps that they can get away with easily. It’s been months since Picard’s team delivered any meaningful results to the Empire. They’re desperate for answers. Picard’s desperate for a victory and without a reliable recon expert like Barclay in his crew, he’s starting to feel hopeless. When the latest scavenging mission ends in disaster Picard is summoned to the Imperial Palace to be humiliated in person. An increasingly frustrated Picard hatches a new plan along with Riker. They return to the Enterprise to find that Geordi and O’Brien have made a startling breakthrough in their effort to reconnect to the Prime Universe, one that puts them on a direct collision course with Barclay on Enterprise Prime.

The Writing

The Tiptons continue their long, decades-spanning streak of good Trek comic writing with Mirror War 0 . The comic is surprisingly fast-paced, a swerve from the Tiptons, who usually open series with slower issues. It’s also heavy on the combat which has been the exception, not the rule, for an opening issue penned by the Tiptons in my experience. Neither of these are complaints though. Things move fast in the Terran Empire after all so you’re the one who needs to keep up. Thanks in no small part to Nieto’s art the combat scenes flow and weave together smoothly. A note for new readers of Tiptons’ comics: Tiptonisms are back in the issue as well. As coined in my review of Too Long A Sacrifice #1 a Tiptonism is a dialog or caption bubble filled with thirty to fifty words, much higher than the typical maximum amount of twenty-five we see in comics today. It’s a choice much more common in Golden and Silver Age comics but almost jarring in comics today. I have grown to look forward to them now.

Art from STAR TREK: MIRROR WAR #0

When making art, especially when picking up where a previous artist left off, a common expression is: you can strive to be worse than, better than, or different than the previous artist’s work. It looks like Mirror War ‘s artist Carlos Nieto chose to be different than artists of the prequels, most noticeably Woodward. Good for him. Due to the fundamental difference in their styles (Nieto is a digital artist while Woodward paints his pages) trying to emulate Woodward’s art style would have likely yielded poor results. Nieto also, rightfully, decided to leave his strong mark on the series and revitalize the universe in a new, bold vision.

Art from STAR TREK: MIRROR WAR #0

The Terran TNG crew retain their basic features but are presented with a completely different palette. Picard, who we spend the most time within the issue, is even more jacked and terrifying than before, looking more like a Street Fighter character than Sir Patrick Stewart with a French beard. This works particularly well in his favor when he’s kicking heads in and cracking skulls. DC Alonso’s color schemes with their neon-infused sheen pack an extra visual punch. This particular penciler-colorist duo is a deadly combination, readers. Watch out!

I also didn’t want to leave this space without mentioning Nieto’s evolution as a penciler. We last saw him drawing Trek in Terra Incognita in 2018 and clearly, he has come a long way since then. I see your growth, Nieto, and I appreciate it.

Art from STAR TREK: MIRROR WAR #0

What’s the verdict, Q?

Mirror War 0 offers plenty of action, setup and leaves you with an ending that gets you hyped for the rest of the series. The Tiptons and Carlos Nieto with this fiery opener have thrown down the gauntlet. Their signal is clear: it’s universe plundering time.

IDW's Star Trek: The Mirror War #1 Comic Review

Scott and David Tipton and Gavin Smith's Star Trek: The Mirror War #1 sets the stage for a colossal confrontation in the Mirror Universe.

IDW's Star Trek: The Mirror War #1

Now that  Star Trek star William Shatner is officially the oldest person to ever travel into space , the sci-fi franchise feels as relevant as ever. Veteran Trek writers Scott and David Tipton  return to the Mirror Universe to send the Mirror version of the Next Generation's crew of the enterprise on a stunning new adventure in IDW's   Star Trek: The Mirror War   #1, a fun, well-drawn first issue.

Star Trek: The Mirror War #1 begins with Captain Picard and Data attending a shady meeting with a man named Rogers. The meeting quickly devolves into a shootout, leaving Data and the captain no choice but to run and transport back to the Enterprise, where Deanna Troi is interrogating Lieutenant Reginald Barclay. Barclay has just found his way back to the Mirror Universe after hiding out on the other version of the Enterprise. He tells Troi that while he was there, he discovered the existence of a race of shipbuilders called the Faundori, who he believes are the key to winning the war against the Klingons. While Troi and Picard are still suspicious of Reginald's motives, they confirm the existence of the Faundori in their universe and hatch a plan.

The Tiptons do a great job of characterizing the Mirror Universe versions of the iconic crew of the Enterprise. While Picard is still a master strategist, he isn't restrained by a moral code -- a fact that helps keep him distinct as a protagonist and establishes the atmosphere and tone of the Mirror Universe as a whole. As effective as the Tiptons' characters are, they aren't particularly subtle. There are times when efforts to communicate this version of the Captain's short temper or Striker's suspicious nature feel both unnecessary and a bit redundant. While much remains mysterious about Picard's plans, this issue introduces the makings of an exciting story and a tense dynamic between crew members.

Gavin Smith adds all manner of sinister details to the landscape of the Mirror Universe. These quiet additions to the world, combined with his excellent character designs, help sell the alternate universe. Smith's portraits of these familiar characters are faithful representations of the heroes fans love, but they convey a certain edge that adds to the story's conceit. Smith uses large, horizontal panels to capture chaotic fight scenes without missing a single detail.

The Mirror Universe is a bizarre, hostile place populated with fascinating characters. The Tiptons and the rest of the creative team do a tremendous job of introducing the Mirror Universe to new readers while moving the plot into new, intriguing directions. While there are a few imperfect moments,  Star Trek: The Mirror War #1 is a great, fast-paced comic that lays the groundwork for an intriguing series.

“Star Trek: The Mirror War” #0

By joe skonce | september 9th, 2021 posted in reviews | % comments.

Of the many stories that Star Trek has introduced over its many franchises, one of the most enduringly popular is the concept of the “mirror universe,” an alternate dimension where instead of a peaceful federation of diplomacy and compromise, there is a brutal empire of conquest and coercion. While this certainly isn’t the only example of a popular series presenting a dark alternate timeline, something about Trek’s presentation has become iconic and easily parodied. It’s the little visual cues, like the sleeveless vest uniforms or the “evil goatee” used in various homages to the original episode, ‘Mirror, Mirror.’ Yet, despite its cultural impact, the mirror universe was used sparingly and never used in the adventures of Picard and his crew. In many ways, this makes sense. However, while it’s an intriguing premise, the Mirror Universe loses some of its intrigue when you spend too much time there. While you can do interesting things with characters encountering their evil selves, seeing their darker elements on full display, something is lost when you just focus on the evil empire. Unfortunately, this is ultimately the case with “Star Trek: The Mirror War” #0, a book that doesn’t stand well on its own and requires a fair bit of homework to enjoy.

Cover by Carlos Nieto Written by Scott & David Tipton Illustrated by Carlos Nieto Colored by DC Alonso Lettered by Neil Uyetake Get caught up with the Mirror Enterprise-D before its crew—helmed by Jean-Luc Picard—faces new threats and challenges in the upcoming Mirror War event! Following the failure of the attempt to steal ships from the Prime Universe, Picard and the Mirror Crew are called back to Earth to report to the Emperor personally… so long as they can survive the trip!

One of the reasons that “Star Trek: The Mirror War” #0 feels like homework is due in large part to the fact that it is a direct continuation of “Star Trek: The Next Generation: Through the Mirror” and doesn’t give you much to catch you up. There is a brief recap page, but it is more of an exposition dump about the state of the Terran Empire instead of the role of the crew of the ISS Enterprise-D. As a result, all we know is that there was an ill-fated attempt to capture their alternate counterpart. Throughout the issue, though, there are allusions to Picard’s failure and how it has impacted his standing amongst the empire’s leadership. While this sets up some compelling political intrigue, namely Picard vowing to assume leadership of the empire, there’s something about this that lessens the impact of what we know about the mirror universe.

The mirror universe thrives on might and exploitation, taking advantage of weaknesses and literally fighting your way to the top. At the start of “Star Trek: The Mirror War” #0, it seems that Picard and his crew are on quite the losing streak. As the Emperor’s council reminds him, he failed to provide the empire with a new fleet of ships, even lost crew members in the process, and even failed to provide the empire with adequate supplies. Yet, despite this long line of failure, Picard is still trusted and respected amongst his crew. Sure, there is an attempt on his life to give the issue some action. There are a few moments in “Star Trek: The Mirror Wars” #0 where Picard shows both his strength and his anger, but at no point is there a convincing reason why the crew of the Enterprise-D is so much more of a cohesive unit than other ships we’ve seen in this world. Maybe their ability to work together, to not be a crew of opportunistic backstabbers, has been established in the previous series from IDW. However, the issue doesn’t do much to show why Picard still commands the respect of his crew. While the series successfully gives the team an “underdog” status, it doesn’t seem to impact Picard’s command.

While some crucial questions felt pushed aside in “Star Trek: The Mirror War” #0, some aspects also worked well. Scott and David Tipton do a good job of writing these characters’ dark alternatives. Every character has a moment that highlights the similarities with their prime character. Data still speaks with an overly formal candor but lacks any desire to learn more about humanity. Instead, he is a cold and uncaring number cruncher. Troi uses her empathy to mock and harass the thought of torture and training centers hanging above her crewmate’s heads. Picard is still grandiose and inspirational, just upholding ideas of power and manipulation, a desire to get the empire he served back to its former glory. The dialogue is often the highlight of the issue, even if it doesn’t necessarily fit the story they are trying to tell. The characterization is good. You just wish the story was better.

While the characterization is good, the real stars of the show are Carlos Nieto and DC Alonso, who do a remarkable job of making the series have the look of Star Trek while still capturing the fact that this is a world that has an entirely different value set of the prime universe. For example, the bridges of Starships in the prime universe are the intersection of form and comfort (just take a look at the bridge of the Enterprise-D or Voyager, those chairs look so COMFORTABLE) the bridge of the ISS Enterprise-D is utilitarian and spartan. Similarly, while the ships in the prime universe look well maintained, brightly lit, and colorful, the counterpart ships look dark and dingy. DC Alonso takes advantage of dark blues and greens to make the ships look cramped and uncomfortable while also showing off the dirt and rust of a lengthy journey. But what makes “Star Trek: The Mirror Wars” #0 great is that while the ships and uniforms of the Enterprise-D are struggling, the palace of the empire is brightly lit, lavash, and lush, representative of how those at the top exploit and pass off the blame of the falling empire. It effectively justifies Picard’s desire to fight against the aging emperor and the cronies controlling him. Between the design of the palace and the ship and some dynamic moments of action, Nieto and Alonso help bring the issue to life.

The only issue, then, is just thinking about the story moving forward. The motivations are clear, the table set, but the question becomes, in a war with the prime universe, who do you support? Will the focus shift between the ISS Enterprise-D and the USS Enterprise-D? There are clear ideas here, but it doesn’t feel like “Star Trek: The Mirror Wars” #0 does enough to entice a return visit, nor does it help a reader who has not been following the crew of this alternate Enterprise. In any case, while there is a war brewing, it seems unclear how this helps Picard’s more significant goals.

Final Verdict: 6.0 While the art and characters of “Star Trek: The Mirror Wars” #0 is good, the story leaves something to be desired when setting up an event of this scale.

Kirk’s starship enterprise returns in star trek: discovery - with a big twist.

The Starship Enterprise makes a shocking return in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but it's a version that hasn't been seen since TOS season 2.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • The Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise, last seen in Star Trek: The Original Series' "Mirror, Mirror," makes a shocking return in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5.
  • Star Trek: Discovery filmed scenes on the USS Enterprise set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
  • The ISS Enterprise now exists in the 32nd century, offering a new glimpse into the alternate reality of the Mirror Universe.

Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) Starship Enterprise makes a shocking return in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, but with a jaw-dropping twist - it's the ISS Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series ' "Mirror, Mirror"! Written by Johanna Lee & Carlos Cisco and directed by Jen McGowan, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors," sees Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) enter interdimensional space to pursue Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and the next clue to the Progenitors' ancient treasure. What Burnham and Book never expected to find was the Mirror Universe's derelict ISS Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery picked up the mantle of the Mirror Universe from Star Trek: The Original Series , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek; Enterprise. Discovery 's season 1's game-changing Mirror Universe arc introduced Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), who would enter Star Trek 's Prime Universe and is now headlining Paramount+'s upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 movie. Star Trek: Discovery deepened the saga of the Mirror Universe, but the alternate reality's final appearance was in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Thanks to Star Trek 's Temporal Wars , it's now impossible for the Prime and Mirror Universes to cross over in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century.

Individuals who both time travel and cross from Star Trek' s Prime and Mirror Universes suffer a lethal medical condition, such as what happened to Emperor Georgiou.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery brings back kirk’s mirror universe starship enterprise, the iss enterprise last appeared in star trek: the original series' "mirror, mirror".

The Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 is the same Constitution Class starship from Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 4, "Mirror, Mirror," which was the ISS Enterprise's only prior canonical appearance. The ISS Enterprise was trapped in interdimensional space and abandoned by its crew, who were refugees and freedom fighters attempting to flee the Mirror Universe for Star Trek 's Prime Universe in the 24th century. As Captain Burnham later learned, the refugees made it to the Prime Universe, and one scientist even became a Starfleet Admiral.

In Star Trek: Enterprise season 4's "In A Mirror, Darkly", the 22nd-century Terran Empire gained control of the Constitution Class USS Defiant, which crossed over and time traveled from the 23rd-century Prime Universe.

In Star Trek: The Original Series ' "Mirror, Mirror", the ISS Enterprise was commanded by Captain James T. Kirk who assassinated its prior Captain, Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter). "Mirror, Mirror" saw the Prime Universe's Kirk, Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and Scotty (James Doohan) switch places with their Mirror counterparts due to a transporter accident during an ion storm. Before switching back, Prime Kirk planted a seed with the goateed Mirror Spock (Leonard Nimoy) to take control of the Terran Empire and institute reforms to prevent the inevitable destruction of the Empire.

Mirror Spock's reforms were successful but ultimately weakened the Terran Empire, which was conquered by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, as seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek: Discovery Filmed Season 5’s Enterprise On Strange New Worlds’ Set

Star trek: strange new worlds was on hiatus after season 2..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors", was filmed on the USS Enterprise set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . When Discovery season 5 was in production in late 2022, Strange New Worlds was on hiatus after completing season 2 filming in June . ( Strange New Worlds wouldn't begin season 3 production until December 2023.) Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, Eve Harlow, and Elias Toufexis shot on Strange New Worlds ' sets, which are located in Toronto where Star Trek: Discovery also filmed.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is in production, and the series has been renewed for season 4.

Star Trek: Discovery redressed Strange New Worlds ' USS Enterprise set to become the ISS Enterprise. Scenes were filmed on the Enterprise's bridge, hallways, and medical bay. Interestingly, by using Strange New Worlds ' Enterprise set, which depicts the USS Enterprise before Captain Kirk assumes command, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 establishes that the ISS Enterprise, which crossed into the Prime Universe decades after Star Trek: The Original Series , is the same ship as in "Mirror, Mirror" despite the very different interiors.

Star Trek: Enterprise recreated the sets of Star Trek: The Original Series ' USS Enterprise for the interiors of the USS Defiant.

What Happens To Mirror Universe’s Enterprise In Star Trek: Discovery?

The 32nd century just got another 23rd-century starship.

Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker piloted the ISS Enterprise out of interdimensional space and into Star Trek 's Prime Universe with the help of the USS Discovery. Afterward, Burnham assigned Lt. Commanders Kayla Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) to fly the ISS Enterprise to Federation headquarters, so that the Mirror Universe's starship could be put into "storage". However, there are now fascinating ramifications to the ISS Enterprise existing in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century .

Amazingly, the ISS Enterprise is also now the second 23rd-century starship in 3191 along with the USS Discovery itself.

Although the ISS Enterprise is obsolete by 32nd-century standards, it's still a bonanza of Mirror Universe technology that the United Federation of Planets has now acquired . This would certainly be of interest to Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg). The 23rd-century ISS Enterprise is a window not just to 900 years ago, but also to the alternate reality, especially since the Mirror Universe is now sealed off permanently from the Federation. Amazingly, the ISS Enterprise is also now the second 23rd-century starship in 3191 along with the USS Discovery itself. Perhaps the ISS Enterprise will reappear and play a role in the second half of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Star Trek Prequel Movie In The Works With Star Wars Director

Toby Haynes, who directed episodes of Black Mirror, Doctor Who, and Andor, is lined up to make a Star Trek movie.

By Eddie Makuch on April 11, 2024 at 12:06PM PDT

A Star Trek prequel movie is in the works with Star Wars director Toby Haynes attached to direct, Paramount announced during CinemaCon. This has been rumored since January , and now it's confirmed. The movie is set for release sometime in 2025.

Haynes previously directed episodes of Doctor Who, Black Mirror, Sherlock, and the Star Wars series Andor. Collider reported on these details from CinemaCon.

Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote The Lego Batman Movie, is writing the untitled Star Trek film. Haynes has never directed or written a Star Trek movie, but he directed Black Mirror's Star Trek-inspired USS Callister episode.

The film is said to be an "origin story" that will take place prior to the events of 2009's Star Trek, which took place in 2255 and was itself an origin story. This likely means it will feature a different cast. The stars of the latest series, including Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana, have been rumored to be coming back for a fourth film in their series, but it hasn't happened yet.

2016's Star Trek Beyond is the latest entry in the main Star Trek movie series, but the franchise has lived long and prospered on streaming with the TV shows Picard and Strange New Worlds.

The 2009 Star Trek reboot and its 2013 sequel Into Darkness were directed by JJ Abrams, before he handed off directing duties to Justin Lin for Star Trek Beyond. The three movies collectively earned around $1.2 billion at the global box office.

In addition to Pine, Saldana, and Quinto, the latest Star Trek movie series featured John Cho as Sulu and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. Yelchin tragically died in 2016 at the age of 27 after a motor vehicle accident in his driveway.

Star Trek Has Finally Revealed the Evil Enterprise's Weird Fate

Watch out for any goatees.

star trek mirror wars

Today, everyone knows what a multiverse is. But back in 1967, parallel universe stories weren’t nearly as common as they are now, even within the sci-fi genre. A classic Star Trek episode, Jerome Bixby’s “Mirror, Mirror,” helped popularize the alternate universe trope, complete with meaner versions of yourself who may rock an evil little goatee like Mirror Spock.

Star Trek’s Mirror Universe also gave us an alternate version of the USS Enterprise in the ISS Enterprise , a ship that served the Imperial Terran Empire, not the United Federation of Planets. Now, in the Discovery Season 5 episode “Mirrors,” the evil ISS Enterprise is back... as a force for good. Here’s what it all means. Spoilers ahead.

The ISS Enterprise returns

Burnham looks at the ISS Enterprise in 'Discovery' Season 5

Captain Burnham watches the ISS Enterprise warp to Federation HQ.

While pursuing the thieves Moll and L’ak, Book and Burnham take a shuttlecraft into an unstable wormhole and discover the floating, pseudo-derelict ISS Enterprise . One of the clues to the Progenitor’s tech has been hidden on it, but for Burnham, it’s kind of like a bizzaro universe homecoming. Burnham spent a decent amount of time in the Mirror Universe in Discovery Season 1 , and in Season 2 she found herself on the Enterprise with her brother Spock just before jumping from the 23rd century to the 32nd century.

In “Mirrors,” Burnham notes that “crossing between universes has been impossible for centuries,” which means the ISS Enterprise must have crossed over into the Prime Universe well before the 32nd century. Burnham is referencing the events of Discovery Season 3, when we learned that Philippa Georgiou, a resident of the Mirror Universe, couldn’t go back to her home universe because those dimensions had drifted apart. But the ISS Enterprise , which was previously captained by an evil Kirk, crossed over into the Prime Universe well before that moment, and Discovery has now added details connecting The Original Series, Deep Space Nine , and Discovery Season 3.

How evil Spock became good

Mirror Spock talks to Kirk in the 'Star Trek' episode "Mirror, Mirror.'

Spock talking with Kirk in “Mirror, Mirror.”

In the Deep Space Nine episode “Crossover” we learn that after Kirk talked to Mirror Spock and encouraged him to try making the Terran Empire a peaceful power, Mirror Spock did just that. But as Mirror Kira explained, Mirror Spock’s idealism didn’t work out the way he’d hoped:

“Spock rose to Commander in Chief of the Empire by preaching reforms, disarmament, peace. It was quite a remarkable turnabout for his people. Unfortunately for them, when Spock had completed all these reforms, his empire was no longer in any position to defend itself against us [the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance].”

Discovery appears to be referencing this exact event, even if Spock isn’t named outright. When Book learns the ISS Enterprise became a refugee ship for people who’d turned against the Empire, he says, “The Terran High Chancellor was killed for trying to make reforms.”

This likely references Spock, but adds the twist that he was perhaps betrayed by other people within the Terran Empire, even if Earth adopted his reforms. Now, by the end of “Mirrors,” the 23rd-century ISS Enterprise has been moved to the Prime Universe and the 32nd century. It’s an antique by modern standards, but it’s a contemporary of the USS Discovery, so it’s still serviceable. This means that by the end of Discovery Season 5 there will still be a version of the classic Enterprise floating around Federation headquarters, so when the Starfleet Academy series debuts, 32nd-century Starfleet cadets will have access to the classic version of the most famous Enterprise. It may technically be an evil twin, but its historic adventures aren’t over just yet.

Star Trek: Discovery Just Brought A Legendary Original Series Episode Back Into The Mix

Let's fly ... away from spoilers . Read no further if you haven't watched the latest episode of "Star Trek: Discovery."

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the strangest of them all? In "Star Trek," that title goes to one of the zaniest concepts ever introduced into the canon: The Mirror Universe. The idea of our alternate selves living completely different lives somewhere out there is no longer the sole domain of perhaps the nerdiest franchise in all of sci-fi (although shows like "For All Mankind," "Foundation," and "3 Body Problem" are creating some stiff competition), the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or the best episode of "Community" ever made . Fans might be surprised to find out that many in the scientific community believe the theory is worth discussion these days . But "Trek" put its own unmistakable fingerprints on the multiverse by emphasizing one in particular that stands at odds with the usual Prime Universe -- one that poses a fundamentally moral dilemma between the paragons of Starfleet we know and love, and the absolute worst versions of themselves.

It doesn't come as a huge surprise that "Star Trek: Discovery" would use its final season to travel full circle and return to the Mirror Universe that played such a significant role back in season 1 (even if, ironically, there might be a parallel universe out there where we were able to see  former showrunner Bryan Fuller's more complex and nuanced take on it ). But what's sure to shock and delight longtime fans in episode 5, aptly titled "Mirrors," is a deep-cut reference to arguably one of the most influential hours of "Trek" ever made, and the one that introduced the Mirror Universe in the first place.

A Different Kind Of Black Mirror

There might not be any sinister goatees or chest-baring V-necks in sight throughout this episode of "Discovery," but the lasting effects of "The Original Series" episode "Mirror, Mirror" are plain to see. Upon entering the wormhole that took scavengers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) into multidimensional space, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book (David Ajala) discover the wrecked remains of their ship ... alongside the still-functioning husk of a familiar-looking Starfleet vessel, emblazoned with the name, "ISS Enterprise." For those who haven't brushed up on their 1967 "Trek" lore (and, quite frankly, shame on you if that's the case), Burnham helpfully points out that this isn't exactly the same starship captained by the fabled James T. Kirk thousands of years ago. It's one that has somehow found its way from the depths of the Mirror Universe (the exact specifics are oddly brushed aside) and remained stranded ever since.

But then "Discovery" goes a step further and hearkens back to "Mirror, Mirror" more thematically. While exploring the derelict ship, Burnham and Book stumble upon information about the previous occupants of the ISS Enterprise and specifically that of a certain Kelpian who rose from a slave to a leader in his own right. That, of course, refers to none other than the Mirror version of Saru (Doug Jones) seen in season 3, whom Emperor Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) saved from certain death and pointed towards his proper path. Where the ending of "Mirror, Mirror" suggests that Mirror Spock is still "a man of integrity" despite the ruthlessness of the Empire he serves, "Discovery" reconfirms that even the comically rampant evil of the Mirror Universe is no match for the stubborn idealism of "Trek."

Star Trek: Discovery

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 5 'Mirrors' is a quality installment, but weighed down by another anchor of nostalgia

This entire episode was more than likely written for the sole reason that the sets from "Strange New Worlds" could be utilized.

And this week's throwback to "Discovery"-past to add to the season-long epilogue is to the Mirror Universe

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 5

The chase across the galaxy for the Progenitors MacGuffin continues, offering chances to insert stand-alone, episode-length adventures along the way. And this week's installment, entitled "Mirrors" features a brief and very random reminder that the Mirror Universe exists.

And that alone would've made an genuinely enthralling episode, but...Alex Kurtzman et al could not resist the temptation for an utterly pointless and thoroughly unnecessary throwback to the USS Enterprise. Honestly, these people have a serious problem, they should seek help.

To put all of this into context, the crew of the USS Discovery continue their pursuit of Malinne 'Moll' Ravel (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and that chase leads them to er...well, you know, a giant, space-time swirly orifice that fills the viewscreen. Apparently, it's some sort of wormhole that's spectacularly unstable because of the constant matter/anti-matter reactions that are taking place at the opening. It's actually more than a little reminiscent of the inside of the V'ger spacecraft from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and that's just fine.

But it's what they find inside that grinds gears. Since the Discovery is too big to squeeze through the constantly opening and closing orifice, Capt. Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book (David Ajala) take a shuttle through only to find...the ISS Enterprise. Yes, indeed, last seen (and only seen, actually) in the epic "The Original Series" episode "Mirror, Mirror" (S02, E04).

While beaming back to the USS Enterprise during an ion storm, Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura materialize aboard a almost-identical Enterprise in a parallel universe. Here, the United Federation of Planets has been replaced by the Terran Empire and its inhabitants are violent and cruel. Their only hope is to artificially reproduce the effects of the storm to facilitate a return to their own universe. (" I mperial S pace S hip replaces the traditional " U nited S pace S hip.")

And while the idea of finding a derelict, 900-year-old starship from the latter half of the 23rd century is a great idea, in the name of the Great Prophet Zarquon, why-oh-why did it have to be the Enterprise? There are — at least — 10 other Constitution Class starships that could've been potentially chosen and thus still allowing the updated sets from "Strange New Worlds" to have been used.

The USS Cayuga (NCC-1557), USS Constellation (NCC-1017), USS Defiant (NCC-1764), USS Excalibur (NCC-1664), USS Exeter (NCC-1672), USS Hood (NCC-1703), USS Intrepid (NCC-1631), USS Lexington (NCC-1709), USS New Jersey (NCC-1975) and the USS Potemkin (NCC-1657). And those are just the ones that are canon. Another new vessel could just as easily have been introduced as it's not unknown for Nu-Trek to bring brand new ships to the line.

And of course Burnham makes reference to the fact that her brother, Spock, served on this ship, which is probably another reason why the Enterprise was forced upon the writers. And according to some extremely rushed exposition, most of the crew escaped the weird wibblywobbly wormhole and went on to lead peaceful and productive lives — we assume somewhere not too far away given how long ago it happened and the current location in deep space — in a somewhat Space Seed scenario. Another interesting throwaway remark from Burnham was, "Crossing between universes has been impossible for centuries now," which shuts down that potential story avenue rather abruptly.

But let's also focus on why this episode could've been near-faultless if only someone could counsel Paramount showrunners on how to ween themselves off of nostalgia addiction. This week we get to see the whole Moll and L'ak backstory...and it's rather good and to add to that, Book and Moll confront the fact that they're distantly related. You know, because that makes things much more absurd orderly. (See how Burnham had to be related to Spock.)

The pacing of this episode, and with the exception of using the Enterprise, when any other Constitution Class starship could've worked — and served to expand the Mirror Universe a little bit — this is an enjoyable episode. It's a shame though that this is following the same cookie cutter seasonal storyline template by relying very much on a quest to follow while having standalone episode-long adventures to fill in the gaps, but hey, it can't be much worse than last season. So, there's that.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every other episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US, while "Prodigy" has found a new home on Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.
