8 Best Q Quotes In Star Trek: The Next Generation

The enigmatic Q provides many life lessons for Captain Picard as the Enterprise journeys through outer space.

  • Q is a god-like entity with a perverse sense of humor who forms a love/hate relationship with Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
  • Q's role is to guide and challenge humanity rather than destroy it, as he often sets obstacles that the Enterprise-D can overcome.
  • Q is a memorable character due to his irritating but not-quite-evil nature, his contrast of humor and menace, and his role as a foil to the staid Picard.

There are many strange and exciting things to be discovered in the world of Star Trek: The Next Generation , from mind-bending anomalies to foes like the Klingons or Borg. But one of the strangest forces encountered by the Enterprise-D during its long-term exploration mission was Q (John de Lancie), a god-like entity with an especially perverse sense of humor.

Best Picard Quotes In Star Trek: The Next Generation

Q is both an occasional ally to and a thorn in the side, of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The two characters develop something of a love/hate relationship as their various encounters bring them face to face with alternate timelines, scientific conundrums, and deadly threats to the Federation.

8 "Generosity has always been my weakness."

"encounter at farpoint" (season 1, episodes 1 and 2).

Q's initial challenge for the human race is to solve the mystery of Farpoint Station. Picard and his crew realize that they need to free a powerful alien from captivity.

Q's comment about his apparent generosity is interesting, as it suggests that, for all his theatrics about presiding over the future of humanity, a part of him wants Picard to succeed. He does not set obstacles that the Enterprise -D is unable to overcome, demonstrating that the entity is interested in guiding humanity rather than destroying it.

7 "Sometimes I think the only reason I come here is to listen to these wonderful speeches of yours."

"True Q" (Season 6, Episode 6)

Q and Picard cannot exactly be called friends, but their banter is a key feature of their complicated relationship. In "True Q", Q responds to Picard's monologue about the differing moralities of the Q Continuum and the Federation by playfully complimenting Picard's custom of taking every opportunity to give a self-important lecture. Yet the pair have genuine affection for one another, despite their differing perspectives.

6 Weirdest Star Trek Easter Eggs

It is this tension that helps to make Q such a memorable character. He is irritating, rather than evil, and there is a certain method to his madness. Indeed, Q's jester-like qualities make him the perfect foil for the staid Picard, resulting in one of Star Trek 's greatest double acts.

6 "Change is at the heart of what you are. But change into what? That's the question."

"hide and q" (season 1, episode 9).

The Next Generation 's writers often complained that Gene Roddenberry's enlightened humanity limited the kind of stories they could tell, but some contributors were still able to show enduring human flaws even in the enlightened twenty-fourth century. In "Hide and Q", the titular super-being tempts Commander Riker by offering to have him join the powerful Q.

Riker ultimately chooses to remain as a human, despite the great powers that the Q Continuum offers. However, both the episode and Q's dialogue demonstrate that, for all its advances, the human race has not finished evolving into its final form.

5 "They're simply interested in your ship, its technology. They've identified it as something they can consume."

"q who" (season 2, episode 16).

  • "The Borg is the ultimate user. They're unlike any threat your Federation has ever faced. They're not interested in political conquest, wealth, or power as you know it. They're simply interested in your ship, its technology. They've identified it as something they can consume."

Q's doom-laden speech about the Borg sets out a new status quo that would come to define not only the remainder of The Next Generation , but would also inform shows like Deep Space Nin e , Voyager , Enterprise , and even Star Trek: Picard .

John de Lancie demonstrates considerable skills as a comedy actor throughout his time on Star Trek , but his chilling speech about the Borg demonstrates that the powerful Q is as menacing as he is humorous. This contrast is part of what makes Q such a legendary character in the Star Trek mythos.

4 "No feelings. No emotions. No pain. And yet you covet those qualities of humanity."

"deja q" (season 3, episode 13).

  • "There are creatures in the universe who would consider you the ultimate achievement, android. No feelings. No emotions. No pain. And yet you covet those qualities of humanity. Believe me, you're missing nothing. But if it means anything to you - you're a better human than I."

While some episodes of The Next Generation examined how humans reacted to becoming part of the Q Continuum, "Deja Q" reversed the equation and showed the consequences of Q becoming human. Q struggles to adjust to his new condition, including the need for sleep.

Star Trek: 8 Best Holodeck Creations Ever

Q discusses his newfound humanity with Data, who longs to be more human. In the scene, Q demonstrates a touching sympathy towards the android , pointing out that Data is more human than Q can ever be. Once Q regains his powers, he uses them to make Data experience laughter for the first time, demonstrating that, for all his tricks, Q is capable of good deeds.

3 "It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid."

  • "If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid."

While the second season of The Next Generation is generally regarded as one of the show's weaker years (due in part to industry strikes), it holds the distinction of introducing one of science fiction's most iconic threats : the Borg.

Picard complains that the meeting with the Borg has resulted in the deaths of several of the Enterprise 's crew. Q is unrepentant: he points out that space is a dangerous place to explore, and that Picard should expect to face significant obstacles during his voyages. However, given that the alternative is to miss out on the wonders of the cosmos, Q believes that Picard and his crew must be brave.

2 "He's the person you wanted to be. One who was less arrogant and undisciplined in his youth. One who was less like me."

"tapestry" (season 6, episode 15).

In "Tapestry", Q offers Picard a second chance at life. Rather than being stabbed as a reckless youth, Picard is given the chance to do things differently and avoid the incident. However, changing his past has far-reaching ramifications. Without a near-death experience, Picard becomes meek and never reaches the captain's chair.

Patrick Stewart Confirms Star Trek: The Next Generations's Weirdest Rumor

Q's intervention teaches Picard an important lesson: there are times when recklessness can pay off, and he must take life as it comes, rather than attempting to tidy it up. Picard may be ashamed of his past, but it is what drives him to succeed in the present.

1 "The trial never ends."

"all good things..." (season 7, episodes 25 and 26).

  • "You just don't get it, do you, Jean-Luc? The trial never ends. We wanted to see if you had the ability to expand your mind and your horizons. And for one brief moment, you did."

The Next Generation comes full circle in its finale, "All Good Things...", in which Q makes the closing arguments in the trial for humanity's survival. Picard must solve a fiendishly complicated temporal puzzle to convince Q of the human race's right to exist. While he eventually succeeds, Q reminds Picard that the tests faced by the human race are bound to continue. The process of exploration is never-ending.

Star Trek: Picard would later return to this sentiment , with Q reminding Picard of his earlier words. Q's classic speech also foreshadows that, while The Next Generation was coming to an end, the so-called Golden Age of Star Trek was only just beginning.

Star Trek: Q's 12 Best Moments From Across The Franchise

Q looking serious

Of all the familiar faces to resurface time and time again across the "Star Trek" franchise, one of the most welcome is Q. Played by John de Lancie, the character hails from the omnipotent Q Continuum, who can bend the rules of reality to their whim in an instant. Initially something of a villain for "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Q transforms into more of a trickster pestering various "Star Trek" mainstays. De Lancie reprises his role as Q with no trouble at all in "Star Trek: Picard," once again putting Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his friends through the cosmic wringer.

For all the galactic gags, there is a surprising depth and level of nuance to Q as he observes and plays around with humanity. And with de Lancie appearing as Q in no less than five "Star Trek" series, there are plenty of fan-favorite moments to go around. Here are Q's 12 best moments across the entire "Star Trek" franchise.

Q makes his grand entrance (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

Q is a character whose franchise roots go as far back as Picard and the rest of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" cast. Appearing as the principal antagonist in the two-part series premiere, "Encounter at Farpoint," Q interrupts the Enterprise crew as they first take their assigned posts on the ship. Whisking away Picard and a handful of officers to a mock trial, Q appears before them as humanity's judge, jury, and potential executioner. Introducing himself, Q announces that he will determine if humanity deserves to exist, with Picard appointed as the species' representative.

Something that gets lost relatively quickly across Q's subsequent appearances is that he started out as an adversary, not an ally. Demonstrating his considerable reality-shaping powers from the outset, Q establishes himself as an omnipotent threat if he's not satisfied with his forced trial. Knowing what Q becomes soon thereafter, seeing him appear so menacing and relishing in being able to lord himself above Picard is something of a shock now. "The Next Generation" Season 1 is arguably the show's weakest, but Q provides the series with a heck of an opening episode.

Q reminds Picard the price of exploration (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

While always considering humanity beneath him, Q offers the species a tacit chance at survival in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" Season 2 episode "Q Who." Whisking away the Enterprise across the cosmos, Q introduces Starfleet to the Borg Collective far sooner than they were projected to meet. Though this exposure helps Starfleet better prepare for the Borg threat, several Enterprise crewmen are lost in the resulting skirmish. Reeling from the loss of life and barely escaping from the Borg, Picard is privately admonished by Q after helping the Enterprise to safety.

Q dresses down Picard and reminds him that exploration always comes with the possibility of extreme risks. After Q leaves, even Picard concedes that the omnipotent annoyance helped humanity with the inevitably uncertain battle ahead. Of all the characters to vehemently defend Starfleet's frontier spirit, Q doesn't seem likely to top that list, and yet, he does in a stirring monologue. "Q Who" changes the tenor of "The Next Generation" and debuts perhaps its most memorable enemy, with Q leaving his indelible mark on the franchise in only his third appearance.

Q is stripped of his powers (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

As all-powerful as Q often presents himself, he still answers to the unseen Q Continuum, a collective of similarly powered beings. For all his shenanigans and interfering with the lives of mortals, the Continuum strips Q of his abilities in the third season episode "Deja Q." Powerless and naked, Q is begrudgingly taken in by the Enterprise as he copes with his newfound mortality. And as Q experiences everyday sensations like hunger and pain for the first time, he develops an (admittedly shallow) appreciation towards humanity.

De Lancie finds fresh ground to explore with Q in "Deja Q," no longer the sneering, extraterrestrial bully with a soft spot for Picard. Seeing Q forced to interact with Data (Brent Spiner) and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) as equals fleshes out the character like never before. Q is normally someone fully in control of a given situation and now, he has to confront an overwhelming sense of vulnerability. By the end of "Deja Q," the cosmic demigod regards the Enterprise crew as genuine friends, even after his omnipotence is restored.

Q celebrates his restored powers (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

Q impresses the Continuum in "Deja Q" when he lures vengeful aliens hunting him away from the Enterprise in a shuttlecraft. This selfless act leads the Continuum to fully reinstate Q's powers just in time to save the day, also restoring Q's signature smugness. Returning to the Enterprise bridge, Q takes the time to annoy Picard with an impromptu celebration by summoning a mariachi band. For Data, with whom he formed the strongest bond while mortal, Q allows the normally emotionless android to experience joyfully riotous laughter for the first time.

Q's loss of omnipotence may be temporary, but the ordeal leaves him a changed man and closer to the Enterprise crew. The spectacle on the bridge shows two very different sides to Q that endure for the remainder of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." On the one hand, Q will always be something of a nuisance to Picard, with varying levels of ostracization. On the other, Q's parting gift to Data reveals how much he grew during his brief flirtation with mortality and how much he truly cares for the crew.

Q offers Picard an alternate life (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

Picard undergoes a "Christmas Carol"-style adventure in the sixth season episode "Tapestry," as Q offers him a glimpse at a road not traveled. In his youth as a Starfleet cadet, a cocky Picard instigates a barroom brawl that nearly kills him, teaching him the nature of consequences. In a near-death experience, Q shows Picard how radically different his life would be if he avoids the prior fight altogether. Revived, Picard gains a deeper understanding of himself and overcomes that past trauma as he recovers.

"Tapestry" is a late-game character study episode for Picard, with Q playing the de facto role of the Ghost of Christmas Past. One of the more amusing aspects of "Tapestry" is that Picard remains unsure whether Q is actually involved or if he's just a near-death hallucination. Still, Q's presence, imaginary or not, plays right into his usual wheelhouse and underscores his unlikely friendship with Picard. Rather than constantly grandstanding, Q coaches Picard through his past, giving him another pep talk and helping Picard connect the dots of his own life.

Q revisits humanity's trial (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" has arguably one of the best series finales of all time, split into two parts as "All Good Things..." The episode not only pays off years of storytelling and character development but comes full circle with its series premiere. Just as "The Next Generation" opens with Q challenging Picard to prove humanity's worth, it closes with Q presenting Picard with the same ultimatum. Picard receives another cosmic puzzle to solve, this time involving an anomaly affecting three different timelines simultaneously.

While less sinister than the series premiere, "All Good Things..." brings Q back to his interstellar authoritarian roots. Picard and Q may share a burgeoning friendship, but the fate of the human race still precariously hangs in the balance. Q is not only genuinely happy that Picard solves the riddle but quietly admits to even helping him figure it out. The dynamic between the two men grew considerably across the series, and "All Good Things..." feels like the perfect culmination of their journey together.

Sisko teaches Q a lesson (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine))

Q only makes one appearance in all of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and he does it early, in the first season episode "Q-Less." When Picard's former lover, Vash (Jennifer Hetrick), visits DS9, she is pursued by Q, who is infatuated with her (to her visible chagrin). With power coincidentally failing around the station upon Vash and Q's arrival, the crew naturally suspects Q is responsible. This leads Q and Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) to have their own showdown for the station's fate.

Q learns the hard way that Sisko and the DS9 crew are a far different lot than his usual playmates on the Enterprise. Provoking Sisko into a mock boxing match, Q is surprised when Sisko lays him out with a single punch, not expecting his usual tomfoolery to be met with violence. "Deep Space Nine" delves into tonally darker areas following its inaugural season, and Q's frivolities have no place in the resulting story. That said, Q's lone visit to the station signals how different "Deep Space Nine" and its characters would be from the rest of the franchise.

Q tries to extradite Quinn (Star Trek: Voyager)

After harassing Sisko, Q proves to be much more prolific on "Star Trek: Voyager," appearing in three different episodes across the series. His "Voyager" debut is in the second season episode "Death Wish," providing de Lancie with much more mature material to work with. When a fellow Q taking on the name Quinn (Gerrit Graham) grows weary of immortality, he seeks asylum on Voyager. Dispatched by the Continuum to bring Quinn back in line, Q is shocked that Quinn argues for the right to commit suicide.

"Death Wish" plays out like a courtroom drama, with Q presenting evidence to Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), arguing Quinn should be remanded into his custody. Bringing in everything from character witnesses to delivering well-articulated monologues, de Lancie really shines as Q here. While Q still relies on some mischief to make his case — including a cheeky cameo from Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker — the right to death undercuts the comedy. After numerous depictions as a prankster, it is refreshing to see de Lancie dig into a more serious side to Q.

Q murders Quinn (Star Trek: Voyager)

The most cold-blooded moment in de Lancie's performances as Q comes at the end of "Death Wish," with Q fulfilling Quinn's desire to die. With Quinn granted mortality after successfully pleading his case, Q goes one step further by fatally poisoning him. After confessing to the murder, Q admits that the entire ordeal with Quinn gave him a wider perspective on his own existence. More intriguingly, Quinn's death inspires a sense of rebellion in Q against the Continuum's authority.

It's a shame that the divided Continuum subplot is resolved as quickly as it ultimately is, with Q ending the conflict in his next appearance on "Voyager." For all his bluster about wiping out humanity, Q killing one of his fellow beings from the Continuum is as lethal as he gets. In a way, this is an inevitability; Quinn was always going to be a memorable "Voyager" one-off character . However, moving forward, until "Picard," Q is right back as the merry prankster, which feels like a step back in his development. As beloved as the mischievous Q is, there is something interesting about him diving into moral ambiguity, and de Lancie balances that perfectly in "Death Wish."

Q raises his son (Star Trek: Voyager)

De Lancie makes one last appearance in the final season of "Voyager," joined by his son Keegan de Lancie, appropriately playing Q's son, Q Junior. Introducing Junior to the Voyager crew, Q strips his son's powers and leaves him on the starship until he can learn to behave properly. With Q vanishing off, it falls on Janeway to teach the rambunctious teenager how to play nice with others. Satisfied with Junior's progress, Q advances Voyager's journey several years with a snap of his fingers as a belated thank you.

Paired with his son, Q is out of his element as a parent; all of reality is at risk if Junior isn't careful with his omnipotence. Q is frustrated and challenged like never before, and it's clear that he doesn't like that at all. Q never forms as close a bond with Janeway as he does Picard, but Janeway also helps Q in a way Jean-Luc never could, which Q certainly notices and repays. This final visit to Voyager solidifies Q and Janeway's dynamic while providing a new dimension to Q through parenting.

Picard and Q bid each other goodbye (Star Trek: Picard)

Q comes roaring into "Star Trek: Picard" Season 2 angry at Jean-Luc and ready to teach him one last lesson. Q threatens to alter the timeline by tampering with a critical spaceflight in the 21st century, prompting Picard and friends to reunite and stop him. In reality, Q is dying and uses the last remnants of his power to help Picard overcome unresolved childhood trauma involving his mother. When this becomes evident, the two men share a tearful goodbye in the "Picard" Season 2 finale , aptly titled "Farewell."

While Q regards Picard with vocal — if somewhat mocking — affection throughout "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Farewell" showcases how much he cares for him. And though long annoyed by Q's antics, Picard finally acknowledges him as a friend in the season finale, with the two men sharing a poignant embrace. Despite knowing each other for decades, it's only at the end that Picard and Q bring their companionship to the forefront in a bittersweet moment for both.

Q meets Jack Crusher (Star Trek: Picard)

Though Q presumably dies at the end of "Star Trek: Picard" Season 2, he makes a cheeky return in the final scene of the third season. After Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) follows in his parents' footsteps and enlists in Starfleet, Q approaches Jack privately in his new quarters. Pointing out that he doesn't exist linearly, Q offers Jack the same challenge he gave Picard decades ago to prove humanity's worth.

Q's death in the preceding season finale feels definitive for the immortal character, so seeing Q back and ready to play is a fun coda. After the more antagonistic turn, Q resurfacing feels more like he's back to his old tricks, in a nice return to form. The final season of "Picard" turns "Star Trek" more explicitly generational than ever, and Q's fledgling dynamic with Jack hints at interesting directions for the story to take. Hopefully,  plans for a "Picard" follow-up will come to pass because de Lancie keeps his fan-favorite cred every time Q shows up.

Background information [ ]

  • It was John de Lancie who was approached by Pocket to write I, Q . As de Lancie noted: " I didn’t know enough about Trek to write a Trek novel. I told them I would write a series of interior monologues because the part I did know was the character. " Peter David, assigned to work with de Lancie on the novel, flew out to Los Angeles to meet with him and work out an outline. To the first draft, written by David, de Lancie added extensive Q dialogue; the draft then went back and forth between the two collaborators before the final manuscript emerged. ( Voyages of Imagination , p. 218)
  • The audiobook version was abridged and read by John de Lancie . His wife, Marnie Mosiman , voices the character Melony in the opening and closing sequences.

And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,

I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise . Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. — William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise . Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. — Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard

Star Trek speaks to some basic human needs: that there is a tomorrow — it's not all going to be over with a big flash and a bomb; that the human race is improving; that we have things to be proud of as humans. No, ancient astronauts did not build the pyramids — human beings built them, because they're clever and they work hard. And Star Trek is about those things. — Gene Roddenberry

In America, people ask " Do the Ferengi represent Jews? " In England, they ask "Do the Ferengi represent the Irish?" In Australia, they ask if the Ferengi represent the Chinese. The Ferengi represent the outcast... it's the person who lives among us that we don't fully understand. Our program was about investigating the essence of people, not the outside. They forgave me though I stole. (points to Michael Dorn ) They forgave him, though he killed. (points to Nana Visitor ) They forgave her though she was a terrorist. Starships do not make Star Trek , hope makes Star Trek . — Armin Shimerman , the Star Trek Engage podcast

I'm a doctor , not a moon shuttle conductor/bricklayer/psychiatrist/mechanic/engineer/scientist/physicist/escalator/magician/miracle worker/veterinarian! — Dr. Leonard McCoy

Something I seldom say to a customer, Jim. In this galaxy, there's a mathematical probability of three million Earth-type planets. And in all of the universe, three million million galaxies like this. And in all of that and perhaps more, only one of each of us. Don't destroy the one named Kirk. — Dr. Leonard McCoy , Star Trek: The Original Series , "Balance Of Terror"

Leave bigotry in your quarters; there's no room for it on the bridge. — Capt. James T. Kirk , Star Trek: The Original Series , "Balance Of Terror"

[The phaser] has two settings: stun and kill . It would be best not to confuse them . — Malcolm Reed , Star Trek: Enterprise , "Broken Bow"

One day soon, man is going to be able to harness incredible energies, maybe even the atom... energies that could ultimately hurl us to other worlds in... in some sort of spaceship. And the men that reach out into space will be able to find ways to feed the hungry millions of the world and to cure their diseases. They will be able to find a way to give each man hope and a common future. And those are the days worth living for. — Edith Keeler , Star Trek: The Original Series , "The City on the Edge of Forever"

The Prime Directive is not just a set of rules; it is a philosophy ... and a very correct one. History has proven again and again that whenever mankind interferes with a less developed civilization, no matter how well intentioned that interference may be, the results are invariably disastrous. — Capt. Jean-Luc Picard , Star Trek: The Next Generation , "Symbiosis"

Fate. It protects fools, little children, and ships named Enterprise . — Cmdr. William Riker , Star Trek: The Next Generation , "Contagion", lampshading Plot Armor

Let's make sure that history never forgets the name ... Enterprise . — Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (in an alternate timeline), "Yesterday's Enterprise"

You're all astronauts on ... some kind of star trek . — Zefram Cochrane , Star Trek: First Contact

Live long and prosper. — Mr. Spock

James T. Kirk: I love Italian [food]. (to Spock) And so do you. Spock: Yes. — Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

I have been and always shall be your friend. Live long and prosper. — Spock 's dying words to Kirk, Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan ( so guess what the next film is about? )

I like this ship! Y'know, it's exciting! — Montgomery Scott , on the USS Enterprise , Star Trek (2009)

What Hamlet said with irony I say with conviction : "What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god!" — Capt. Jean-Luc Picard , Star Trek: The Next Generation , "Hide and Q"

Gillian: Don't tell me; you're from outer space? Kirk: No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space. — Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Spock: I would cite regulation , but I know you will simply ignore it . Kirk: See? We are getting to know each other. — Star Trek (2009)

" On this site, a powerful engine will be built. An engine that will allow us to travel a thousand times faster than we can today. And with it, we will explore strange new worlds. Seek out new life and new civilizations. And to go... boldly... where no man has gone before. " — Zefram Cochrane , father of human warp flight, speaking at the dedication of the Warp 5 complex, Star Trek: Enterprise , "Broken Bow"

" This is Captain James T. Kirk/Jean-Luc Picard/Jonathan Archer of the Starship Enterprise . " — repeated line.

" Mr. Paris/Mr. Chakotay. Set a course ... for home. " — Captain Kathryn Janeway , Star Trek: Voyager , "Caretaker" and "Endgame"

" Mr. Kim, we're Starfleet officers. Weird is part of the job. " — Captain Kathryn Janeway to Ensign Harry Kim , Star Trek: Voyager , "Deadlock" ( Immediately after Harry's apparent return from the dead via a transfer from a doomed parallel Voyager. )

" Your father was captain of a starship for twelve minutes. He saved eight hundred lives, including your mother's - and yours. I dare you to do better . " Captain Christopher Pike , Star Trek (2009)

" I can assure you, this 'old cat' might not be as toothless as you think. " — Captain Benjamin Sisko , responding to a Klingon fleet's threat to storm his station in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's "The Way of the Warrior". (There's a good reason why the Prophets chose him as their Emissary.)

" We are the Borg. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Your life, as it has been, is over. Resistance is futile . — The Borg Collective saying the words most guaranteed to make people say " Oh, Crap! ".

" You Klingon bastards, you killed my son . " — James T. Kirk , Star Trek III: The Search for Spock giving a strong contender for second place to the above .

" If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid. " — Q , Star Trek: The Next Generation , "Q Who" describing the final frontier (also works as a description of the internet).

Q: You hit me! Picard never hit me! Sisko: I'm not Picard. — Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , "Q-Less"

" The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth. Whether it's scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth. It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based. And if you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened, you don't deserve to wear that uniform ! " — Capt. Jean-Luc Picard , Star Trek: The Next Generation , "The First Duty", to Cadet Wesley Crusher,

" There are three things to remember about being a starship captain: Keep your shirt tucked in, go down with the ship, and never abandon a member of your crew. " — Captain Janeway , Star Trek: Voyager , "Dark Frontier" to Naomi Wildman regarding rescuing Seven of Nine from the Borg.

"'Let me help.' A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He'll recommend those three words even over 'I love you'." — Captain Kirk , "The City On The Edge Of Forever" ( Spock says "Let me help" to Kirk in the very next episode. )

Sisko : Every time I throw this ball, a hundred different things can happen in a game. He might swing and miss, he might hit it. The point is, you never know. You try to anticipate, set a strategy for all the possibilities as best you can, but in the end, it comes down to throwing one pitch after another, and seeing what happens. With each new consequence, the game begins to take shape. Alien : And you have no idea what that shape is until it is completed? Sisko : That's right. In fact, the game wouldn't be worth playing if we knew what was going to happen. Alien 2 : You value your ignorance of what is to come? Sisko : That may be the most important thing to understand about humans. It is the unknown that defines our existence. We are constantly searching, not just for answers to our questions, but for new questions. We are explorers. We explore our lives day by day, and we explore the galaxy, trying to expand the boundaries of our knowledge. And that is why I am here. Not to conquer you with weapons, or with ideas. But to coexist... and learn. — Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , "Emissary", succinctly summing the very point of Star Trek

Sir, you have a many-legged beast crawling up your shoulder . — Mr. Spock , Star Trek: The Original Series , "A Taste Of Armageddon", before subjecting an enemy to the Vulcan nerve pinch

Female Changeling: The Alpha Quadrant seems wracked with chaos. It could use some order. Odo: Imposing your type of order on the Alpha Quadrant may prove more difficult than you imagine. Female Changeling: We are willing to wait until the time is right. — Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , "The Search: Part II"

" Survival is insufficient. " — Seven of Nine , Star Trek: Voyager , "Survival Instinct"

"You see, I feel sorrier for you than I do for him because you'll never know the things that love can drive a man to. The ecstasies, the miseries, the broken rules, the desperate chances, the glorious failures, the glorious victories. All of these things you'll never know simply because the word love isn't written into your book." — Dr. McCoy , to Spock

" The Prime Directive, Admiral [Jellico], last time I checked, did not first appear on the wall of Starfleet Headquarters in flaming letters accompanied by a sepulchral voice intoning, Thou Shalt Not Butt In. It's a guide for day-to-day interaction with developing races so that we don't have umpty-ump Starfleet officers running around playing god by their own rules. But this is not day-to-day Admiral. And we're not talking about playing god. We're talking about showing compassion for fellow living beings. Tell me, Admiral, while you were sitting on Deep Space Five waiting for us to show up, did you actually walk around and interact with the refugees? Did you see the misery in their faces, the fear in their eyes? Did you help patch up the wounded, stand by the bedside of the dying, say a prayer for the dead? Or did you sit isolated in your quarters grumbling over the inconvenience? [...] The Prime Directive was created by men and women, no better or worse than any of us, and I respectfully submit that if our hands are so completely tied by it that we sit around impotently, then we have to seriously reconsider what the hell it is we're all about. " — Commander Riker pissing all over the Prime Directive, courtesy of New Frontier .

Picard: There is no greater challenge than the study of philosophy. Wesley: But William James won't be in my Starfleet exams. Picard: The important things never will be. Anyone can be trained in the mechanics of piloting a starship. Wesley: But Starfleet Academy... Picard: It takes more. Open your mind to the past. Art, history, philosophy. And all this may mean something. — Star Trek: The Next Generation , "Samaritan Snare"

Picard: I sincerely hope that this is the last time that I find myself here. Q: You just don't get it, do you, Jean-Luc? The trial never ends. We wanted to see if you had the ability to expand your mind and your horizons. And for one brief moment, you did. Picard: When I realized the paradox. Q: Exactly. For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you had never considered. That is the exploration that awaits you. Not mapping stars and studying nebulae, but charting the unknowable possibilities of existence. Picard: Q, what is it that you're trying to tell me? Q: You'll find out. In any case, I'll be watching. And if you're very lucky, I'll drop by to say hello from time to time. I'll see you... out there. — Star Trek: The Next Generation , "All Good Things"

"Up until about a hundred years ago, there was one question that burned in every human, that made us study the stars and dream of traveling to them: 'Are we alone?' Our generation is privileged to know the answer to that question. We are all explorers, driven to know what's over the horizon, what's beyond our own shores. And yet, the more I've experienced, the more I've learned that no matter how far we travel, or how fast we get there, the most profound discoveries are not necessarily beyond that next star. They're within us, woven into the threads that bind us, all of us, to each other. A final frontier begins in this hall. Let's explore it together." — Capt. Jonathan Archer , Star Trek: Enterprise , "Terra Prime"

22 Famous Star Trek Quotes that Will Live Forever

If you haven’t watched Star Trek , you’ve at least heard about it. The sci-fi television series created by Gene Roddenberry has earned millions of fans over the years.

Roddenberry was allegedly inspired by Gulliver's Travels and a TV series called Wagon Train to create Star Trek.  Each episode of the series is built as an incredible adventure, but also as a morality tale, considering that the episodes depict cultural realities and conflicts like war and peace, sexism, human rights, religion, economics, loyalty, racism and technology.

Why a Husband Laughed In Wife's Face After Post-Chemo Makeover

Just when we think we've got it all under control, life has a way of ripping the rug right out from under us. It may be as simple as our car breaking down at the worst possible time (it's always when we have somewhere we really need to be).

It could be a little more frustrating like getting slapped with surprise bills that'll make us dip into our savings. But there's one kind of disaster that's the hardest to come back from.

It's the news we're all afraid of hearing one day. It's the worst-case-scenario. It's when a medical disaster hits and the odds aren't in our favor. Which is exactly what happened to this one couple when they were told after 63 years together, they would have to band together for the fight of their life.

How this one husband chose to "support" his wife, took the internet by storm.

After 63 Years Together Cancer Threatened To Take Everything From Them

When long-term couple "Nana" and "Papa" learned Nana had cancer, they didn't hesitate to start treatment.

Chemotherapy is no joke, but no amount of reassurance can prepare someone for the uphill battle they are about to climb. One of the first daunting obstacles a woman under going chemotherapy must face? Losing their hair. While there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, it can be difficult for women to "find their inner warrior" after be forced to shaved their head. Losing your hair during cancer treatment can cause unpleasant emotions like fear, anger, embarrassment, etc. Some people find that being proactive by shaving their heads gives them a sense of control and helps them get comfortable with their new look. After shaving their head, it's not uncommon for women to wear fashionables head coverings like scarves or wigs.

In uncertain times like these, it's when chemo patients need their loved ones more than ever. But "Papa" was the husband who had a shocking way of showing his support when he saw Nana's "post-chemo" makeover. And his devoted daughter, Jenn ( @jennjensc ) caught it all on camera.

When His Wife Walked Through The Door He Laughed In Her Face

As any loving daughter would, Jenn stood alongside her mother to help her with her new transition. Nana wasn't sure how Papa would receive her "new look." In order to make it fun, the two women plotted a "wig reveal" and the results couldn't be more surprising.

"My parents have been married for 65 years. She was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. He tried to be encouraging." - Jenn, @jennjensc

Jenn's TikTok video opens on her father, Papa. She whispers that her mom is trying on wigs and she is ready to show him what she has. Papa seems hopeful. "She's trying on wigs? Oh that's good," he says. But when the camera pans to Nana and Papa sees her for the first time, it's safe to say the results were not what he was expecting. And his reaction can't hide his shock.

Watch Jenn's Video:

He Called Her "Willie Nelson" — Here's How She Got Him Back

In the hilarious and heartwarming video, Nana's wig is undeniably silly. The long black hair is down to her waist and styled in two braids. While Papa tries to be supportive, like any good husband would, he just can't help himself. Nana is the first one to crack a smile at how ridiculous she looks. Then Papa comes back with the most hilarious observation. "You look like Willie Nelson," he remarks. And it's funny because it's true!

The comment section blew up with all kinds of supportive comments. "I was prepared to cry but didn’t expect it to be from laughing 😂 this is gold," one user wrote. Jenn replied to the comment agreeing wholeheartedly, "We haven't stopped laughing," she wrote back.

Jenn's video of her parents went viral overnight. The video racked up over 5.3M views and more than 35,000 comments! Nana and Papa were such hit that their newfound fans were requesting follow up videos. And they didn't disappoint!

Here's the hilarious and heartwarming way this couple "celebrated" Nana reaching the halfway mark of her chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Nana's Resilience Reminds Us To Take Life In Stride, One Day At A Time

In life, there are no guarantees, but Nana's journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of resilience, humor, and the support of loved ones.

Despite facing the daunting reality of chemotherapy and the changes it brings, she found a way to turn an overwhelming moment into something lighthearted, sharing joy and laughter with her family and the world. Her story teaches us that even in the face of adversity, we can choose to embrace life with grace and a sense of humor.

Nana's ability to laugh, even during one of the most challenging times of her life, encourages us all to take things one day at a time and to find reasons to smile, no matter what we face. It's a valuable lesson on resilience and the strength of human spirit.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Scotty Actor Addresses How He's Making The Character More Authentic For Season 3

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be the first time a Scottish actor will play the role of Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, and new-ish recruit Martin Quinn wants to make sure he's doing it right. The actor recently revealed that during the filming for Season 3, he'd made suggestions about how to make his character more authentic and perhaps a bit less stereotypical than past iterations of the chief engineer. Naething wrong wi' that!

Quinn recently spoke to The BBC about following in the footsteps of Trek vets such as James Doohan and Simon Pegg in portraying Scotty, and his experience thus far on the show. Quinn first appeared during Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 ending and he'll have a larger presence in Season 3 of the upcoming Trek series . In the interview, the actor revealed some of the smaller ways he's trying to make the role feel more authentic during production, and the efforts being made by the writing staff. In his words:

They let me put in the word 'baw-heid' instead of 'turnip-heid. Maybe they think all Scottish people are farmers? But they were very gracious about it. And [the writers] are wanting to be authentic to Scotland as well, and that's really nice - not everyone's like that.

Martin Quinn and the writers have made some tweaks to make Scotty at least sound more Scottish, which is something fans from the country will likely appreciate, since even the best performative accent only goes as far as how valid the vocabulary is. I'd imagine we'll be seeing a lot more of the character in Season 3 and beyond, as showrunner Henry Alonso Myers previously said the goal was to put the original Star Trek characters on the ship before they become their actualized selves.

With the news that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was renewed for Season 4, Scotty will definitely have more time to become the miracle worker chief engineer that fans know too well. For a little while he'll have the support of his former instructor and current Enterprise chief engineer Pelia, played by the legendary actress Carol Kane . Martin Quinn seems to be enjoying the job so far, but did mention there are some hiccups in being one of the only Scottish actors on the crew:

I'm constantly having to enunciate because I don't think they know what I'm saying. It’s trying to find the balance, because it’s not just Scottish people watching this TV show, but I want to be as authentic as possible to how I speak.

I can't fault him for that, and seeing as Outlander is a hit show primarily set in Scotland, I think audiences outside of the country are able to adapt to his voice regardless. I'm eager to see him and the cast back in new episodes, and I'm still crossing my fingers we can get at least one episode released before 2025 .

Martin Quinn's quotes about keeping Scotty authentic are interesting, and it leads me to wonder what other ways TOS characters may change as they are introduced in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . (Will Spock be "more Vulcan" or something?) That said, this change stems more from Quinn' attempting to correct the misguided attempts to create a character previously portrayed as Scottish, so it remains to be seen if other characters will change at all when they're brought in.

As fans wait for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, they can stream the previous two seasons with a Paramount+ subscription . Of course, they can also catch the final season of Discovery , which is streaming new episodes on Thursdays.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5's Captain Rayner Ran His Ship Like a Pirate

Callum Keith Rennie also discusses coming into 'Discovery's final season, getting into prosthetics, and how much he has in common with Rayner.

The Big Picture

  • Callum Keith Rennie's Captain Rayner brings conflict and depth to Star Trek: Discovery 's final season.
  • Rennie discusses his experience on Star Trek: Discovery , praising the supportive cast and crew, despite the initial challenges of joining an established series for its last season.
  • In Season 5, Episode 4 "Face the Strange," Burnham and Rayner must work together within a time bubble to save the universe.

As Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) embarks on one last adventure with her crew, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is bringing a few new characters along for the ride. Chief among those newcomers is the blunt, war-worn Captain Rayner. Played by Battlestar Galactica alum Callum Keith Rennie , Rayner is Burnham's new second in command on the Discovery , taking over after Saru ( Doug Jones ) took a different position at Starfleet.

Having lived through The Burn, Rayner doesn't have time for niceties and butts heads with Burnham almost immediately — so naturally, she takes it upon herself to give him a second chance when Starfleet is ready to cut him loose. Last week's episode saw him, rightfully, put in his place a bit as Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) attempted to help him connect with the crew, much to his chagrin. In Season 5 Episode 4, "Face the Strange," Rayner and Burnham are thrown into a time bubble, forcing them to work together if they ever want to get back to the correct timeline and prevent the universe from being destroyed.

Ahead of the episode, I sat down with Rennie to dig into Rayner's backstory, what we can expect from him in the rest of the season, and what it will take for Rayner to truly connect with the crew of Discovery . During our conversation, we also discussed Rennie's history with sci-fi, what it was like joining Discovery for the show's final season, and what he's taking away from the whole experience.

Star Trek: Discovery

Taking place almost a decade before Captain Kirk's Enterprise, the USS Discovery charts a course to uncover new worlds and life forms.

Rennie is no stranger to science fiction, having had roles in such series as The Umbrella Academy , Jessica Jones, and Battlestar Galactica. As Battlestar Galactica was the series that turned me into a sci-fi fan, and perhaps Rennie's most recognizable role, I had to ask him about being a part of such massive and beloved franchises within the genre. "It's amazing," he said. For Rennie, even though Battlestar was also a reboot of a classic series , the show's success was a lot less predictable than the mainstay that is Star Trek . He explained, "Like, say Battlestar , when I started on that I had no idea where that one was gonna go. Discovery was already very established , but I actually didn't let any of that into my [head], because I went, “That's not gonna help.” So, I didn’t. Now, I'm feeling the world of it. Now, I'm sensing what the world of Discovery is and how many people love it, and how it fits. "

Discovery also isn't his first experience with Star Trek , "I watched the original. That was my thing, and that was it," Rennie told me. While he may have missed some of the series' in between, saying, "There's big chunks of time where I just didn't watch a lot of TV, so I missed all of the other stuff," he'll always make time for The Original Series when he comes across it, "even if the old Star Trek comes on, I'll still watch it because that was my Star Trek . Jim Kirk, and all of that. "

While we've gotten a pretty good sense of who Rayner is in these first four episodes, most of his backstory remains a mystery. Rennie revealed that "some backstory comes up in a few episodes." Part of his gruff exterior will be explained as we'll "get a sense of why he's maybe got a chip on his shoulder and has some unprocessed resentments about a bunch of things that maybe have played out in his work in a negative way."

Rennie Calls 'Star Trek: Discovery's Latest Episode "Amazing"

"Face the Strange," is such a classic Star Trek episode, employing the ever-entertaining sci-fi trope of sticking our main characters in a time loop, both to put an obstacle in their path as well as to bring them face to face with some of their own demons. For Rennie, the episode really put the science in science fiction. "It was like, 'Whoa! What's happening? I don't get it.' There's just so much science stuff and talk, so much jumping about to places and history and stuff." But he had high praise for his fellow castmates as well as the crew behind the camera." Lee [Rose] being the director, you're in great hands. Being in scenes with Sonequa, you know that you're gonna be in it , and it was great. I watched it again last night, and there’s just an amazing amount of stuff in there. It was just an amazing episode. "

In this episode, Burnham and Rayner are tossed back in time to the first season of Discovery , bringing them both face to face with the version of Burnham who's fresh off her own demotion in Starfleet . Throughout the episode, it becomes quite clear that Burnham and Rayner have a lot more in common than either of them might have realized. When asked if this experience might put them more on equal footing, Rennie confirmed that "he's learned an understanding of the crew." He went on to point out that we haven't seen the relationship that Rayner had with his own crew.

He explained: "We're not on the Antares talking about his crew, which I think is an important part that we missed, where you go, 'How did I see my people on my particular ship? And how well did I know them?' No one's asking me how well I knew everybody because I did, but if I've only been there a brief time, you're only gonna have facts." He admits that it is important for Rayner to connect past the surface level. "Through that particular episode, you learn and go, 'Yes, it is good to know what people are up to and where they're from,' because in that particular instance, it saved us. So, I learned a thing, and I give a, 'Yes. Got it. Thank you.'"

Rayner Will Have to Shorten the Distance Between Himself and the Discovery Crew

While it doesn't sound like we'll be getting any flashbacks to Rayner's time on the Antares Rennie believes that he'd spent a similar amount of time with that crew as Michael has with hers. "We didn't get to inhabit that, I get to make it up in my own mind," he said. "But for me, it was more like a pirate ship that I had. " While Rayner comes off as the more stubborn, stick-to-the-mission Captain between him and Burnham, Rennie doesn't think he was quite so strict on his own ship. He said:

"That's the way I perceived it. It wasn't some rigid, completely stoic, boss fest, but a little bit of a wild card ship. We're gonna go into things that nobody else wants to go into, or knows how to deal with, but we would. "

While the walls around Rayner are still pretty high, Rennie explained that we will see him "shorten the distance" he's put between himself and the crew of the Discovery. "There's a great bit, there's an episode where Burnham leaves me again to take control of the ship. There's an interaction with everybody in a certain way because they don't like me yet. [Laughs] And I need some help a little bit, but I've created a distance, and I have to shorten that distance between everybody." He went on to say there are plenty of "fun dynamics" to look forward to and Rayner's insistence on keeping everyone at arm's length will likely come back to bite him.

Star Trek has quite a long list of original alien species created for the franchise, and Rayner just happens to be a Kellerun, a race that hasn't been seen since Deep Space Nine . In classic Trek fashion, Kelleruns appear mostly human with the most visible difference being the shape of the ears. As he follows in the footsteps of the likes of Leonard Nimoy and any actor who has ever played a Vulcan or a Romulan, I asked Rennie about getting into prosthetics for the role. "Those guys are great. Rocky [Faulkner] was great, Nicola [Bendrey] was great." While it was certainly an extra step the process was brief enough that it didn't bother him to come to set a bit earlier than usual. "That was probably an hour, and I really didn't think about that enough to go, 'Oh, that's right. I have to get up earlier.' But I think we got it down to an hour and a bit for just the ears because there’s a lot of stuff on them."

Despite the agonizing wait of sitting in front of a mirror for an hour, Rennie noted that Faulkner and Bendrey made the make-up experience as fun as it could possibly have been. He said: "I don't love just sitting there looking at myself for an hour, but there's music and great company and coffee, and it became a really sweet part of the day, and then another sweet part of the day where I download. " It wasn't his first time getting into prosthetics, but his previous experience had been brief. After playing Rayner across an entire season, Rennie admitted by the end, removing the glue actually started to feel like you'd expect pulling costume glue off your ears to feel. "There was a point near the end where the glue-on, glue-off became quite painful for a while."

The Support of the Cast and the Fans Are Highlights of Rennie's 'Star Trek' Experience

While this is Rennie's first season on the show, it's the final bow for Star Trek: Discovery . When asked what he'd be taking away from this experience, he had nothing but high praise for the cast and crew. As a newcomer on a well-established show, jumping into the fifth season had a bit of a learning curve. "I found that coming into the show was difficult for me because it was unlike a show that I'd been on before. It was already very well established." He went on to say:

"I pat myself on the back because I made it through, and there was this wonderful group energy that helped me do that. The good naturedness of the show was something that I maybe haven't worked on. There was a wholehearted goodness about it, which was quite nice, which overlapped into how people treated each other and mutual respect. Also, I kind of blocked out all Star Treks in my mind, so I'm there not thinking of Star Trek history. I'm just doing scene-to-scene and working on this stuff, and then it finishes, and then I forget that there's an incredible vast following of the show that somehow you are now part of it like that. All of that, this is all relatively new to me."

As a new addition to an already established group, I pointed out that it seemed as though Rennie's experience mirrored that of his characters, and he agreed. "I'm excited for people to see the season. And then, coming into it playing, “I don't want to be liked. It doesn't matter if I'm liked. I'm there to do my job, like Rayner, and I'm doing it. And then there's the after-effect of an incredible fan base that seems to be very supportive ."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida cracked jokes and invoked a touchstone of American culture as he quoted from “Star Trek” at Wednesday’s state dinner , telling guests at the White House that he hoped the “unshakable relationship” between his country and the U.S. would “boldly go where no one had gone before.”

“I would like to propose a toast to our voyage to the frontier of the Japan-U.S. relationship with this word: boldly go,” Kishida said, quoting the iconic opening monologue of the original “Star Trek” series.

Kishida, who spoke in English, and President Joe Biden exchanged warm toasts to each other and the decades-long, alliance between their nations as top figures from business, sports and politics — including an ex-president — looked on. The two leaders, who expressed a genuine friendship, pledged to continue to knit together their countries’ interests in the face of global challenges.

Biden , 81, said he and Kishida, 66, came of age as their countries forged a strong bond in the decades after they were pitted against each other in World War II.

“We both remember the choices that were made to forge a friendship,” Biden said. “We both remember the hard work, what it has done to find healing.”

“Tonight,” Biden continued, “We pledge to keep going.”

As the White House served up a maximum dose of pomp to honor its close U.S. ally, notable guests included Bill and Hillary Clinton, who were on familiar turf for the event. The former president declared it “feels great” to be back before casting an appreciative eye at a portrait of his wife from her first lady days that was on display nearby.

Guests in bright spring colors and lots of shimmery gowns chatted politics and talked shop as they strolled in — that meant eclipse chatter from NASA Administrator Bill Nelson (“fabulous” view in Ohio!) and an assessment of Biden’s electoral prospects in Wisconsin from Gov. Tony Evers (looking good!).

But on a day when the inflation news from Washington was less than encouraging, Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell shot past reporters without stopping to chat. Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, in a purple gown, said she didn’t expect to be out campaigning for Biden but nonetheless seemed bullish on his reelection. Actor Robert De Niro supplied the night’s Hollywood quotient and seemed to channel one of his tough-talking characters when he was asked for his thoughts about the 2024 election.

“What do you think?” he retorted.

On a warm spring evening, the Bidens came stepped onto the North Portico to welcome Kishida and his wife, Yuko, who stood out in a flowing royal blue gown on the red carpet.

Inside, Jill Biden , wearing a beaded sapphire gown, had transformed the State Floor of the White House into what she called a “vibrant spring garden” for the evening. The floor of the famous Cross Hall was decorated with images giving the nearly 230 guests the feel of walking over a koi pond, a nod to fish that symbolize “friendship, peace, luck and perseverance,” the first lady said at a media preview Tuesday.

Guests at the head table with the Bidens and Kishidas included the Clintons, De Niro and Japanese pop duo Yoasobi.

Kishida, in his toast at the dinner, enthused over the splendor.

“First and foremost, to be honest my breath is taken and I’m speechless in front of such a huge number of prominent American and Japanese guests,” he said.

A state dinner is a tool of U.S. diplomacy, an honor doled out sparingly and only to America’s closest allies. In the case of Japan, the president has granted that honor for just the fifth time to an ally that he sees as a cornerstone of his policy toward the Indo-Pacific region.

Kishida is on an official visit to the United States this week. The state dinner is Biden’s first this year.

The guests included plenty of Biden family members, including granddaughter Naomi and her husband, Peter Neal. Business moguls also were in force, including JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Labor luminaries United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain and United Steelworkers President David McCall were also in attenddance. Both unions have endorsed Biden for reelection.

Dry-aged rib eye steak, cherry blossoms and the music of Paul Simon were also part of the evening. Simon opened his after-dinner performance by playing guitar and singing two of his major hits, “Graceland” and “Slip Slidin’ Away.”

Guests dined on a meal that was designed to highlight the “bounty of spring” in Japan and the United States: a first course of house-cured salmon that was inspired by a California roll and an entree of rib eye with shishito pepper butter, fava beans, mushrooms and onions. Dessert was salted caramel pistachio cake with a matcha ganache and cherry ice cream.

Some of Jill Biden’s favorite flowers, including sweet peas, roses and peonies, were arranged alongside imported cherry blossoms to decorate a mix of round and rectangular dinner tables in the East Room in shades of pink. A few floral centerpieces topped out at 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall.

Tables were set with a mix of place settings representing the administrations of Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush. Glass and silk butterflies danced over the tables.

Simon is one of Jill Biden’s favorite artists, the White House said, adding that she chose him as a special tribute to Kishida because the prime minister also admires his music.

Simon’s career spans six decades, including performing as part of a duo with his childhood friend Art Garfunkel. The 82-year-old New Jersey native has earned numerous accolades, including multiple Grammys and a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Kishida is the fifth world leader Biden has honored with a state dinner following counterparts from France , South Korea , India and Australia .

Quotes

Capt. Picard : I understand what you've done here, Q. But I think the lesson could have been learned without the loss of 18 members of my crew.

Q : If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid.

Q : Con permiso, Capitan. The hall is rented, the orchestra engaged. It's now time to see if you can dance.

Q : You judge yourselves against the pitiful adversaries you've encountered so far - the Romulans, the Klingons. They're nothing compared to what's waiting. Picard - you are about to move into areas of the galaxy containing wonders more incredible than you can possibly imagine - and terrors to freeze your soul.

Q : My purpose is to join you.

Commander William T. Riker : To join us as what?

Q : As a member of the crew, willing and able, ready to serve. This ship is already home for the indigent, the unwanted, the unworthy. Why not for a homeless entity?

Commander William T. Riker : Homeless?

Commander William T. Riker : The other members of the Q Continuum kicked you out?

Guinan : Not all the Q are alike. Some are almost respectable.

Q : [to Worf]  Microbrain. Growl for me, let me know you still care.

Q : [referring to Guinan]  Picard, if you had half the sense you pretend to have, you would get her off your ship immediately. And if you'd like, I'd be more than pleased to expedite her departure.

Capt. Picard : [to Guinan]  You know him?

Guinan : We have had some dealings.

Q : Those dealings were two centuries ago. This creature is not what she appears to be. She's an Imp, and where she goes, trouble always follows.

Capt. Picard : You're speaking of yourself, Q, not Guinan.

Q : I add a little excitement, a little spice, to your lives, and all you do is complain. Where is your adventurous spirit, your imagination? Think, Picard, think! Think of the possibilities.

Capt. Picard : Simply speaking, we don't trust you.

Q : Oh. Well, you may not trust me, but you do need me. You're not prepared for what awaits you.

Capt. Picard : How can we be prepared for that which we do not know? But I do know that we are ready to encounter it.

Q : You can't outrun them, you can't destroy them. If you damage them, the essence of what they are remains. They regenerate and keep coming. Eventually you will weaken. Your reserves will be gone. They are relentless!

Q : Petulance does not become you. We have business, Picard.

Capt. Picard : We agreed you would never trouble my ship again.

Q : I always keep my arrangements, sir. Look! We're nowhere near your vessel.

[he shows him that they are actually drifting alone in space in a shuttle craft]

Q : You're an impossibly stubborn human.

Q : If necessary, although I can't imagine why, I will renounce my powers and become as weak and as incompetent as all of you.

Q : The Borg is the ultimate user. They're unlike any threat your federation has ever faced. They're not interested in political conquest, wealth, or power as you know it. They're simply interested in your ship, its technology. They've identified it as something they can consume.

Q : There, there, haven't we been careless? A little cleaning service I'm only too happy to provide.

[a wave of Q's hand and Picard's coffee soaked uniform is clean again]

Star wars: the most powerful darth vader quotes.

As one of the most iconic villains of all time, Star Wars' Darth Vader has spoken a lot of famous lines. But what are the best Darth Vader quotes?

  • Darth Vader's iconic quotes are chilling, memorable, and powerful.
  • His most memorable lines include threats, displays of power, and intense moments.
  • Vader's dialogue showcases his dark, intimidating presence and complex character.

Darth Vader has always been good for a quota, and here are his most unforgettable lines in Star Wars canon. Introduced in the first Star Wars movie, Darth Vader's imposing visage and booming voice immediately made him a hit in popular culture. His mystique has only grown over the decades, with George Lucas pulling back the mask and revealing the fallen and fallible Jedi behind it.

Born the Chosen One, Darth Vader is one of the most powerful beings to have ever lived. When he isn't Force-choking his way through enemies and allies who've disappointed him, he enjoys frightening all around him with some truly intimidating quotes. Here are Darth Vader's most chilling, exciting, and even disturbing one-liners.

Star Wars Movies In Order: How To Watch Release Order, Chronologically & With The TV Shows

25 "i have you now", star wars (aka a new hope ).

Is there anything Darth Vader can't do? The Sith Lord is a terrifying warrior, wielding phenomenal power in the Force. He's also one of the greatest starfighter pilots in the galaxy, and the extent of his skills can be seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars . " I have you now, " Darth Vader intones as he locks his sights on Luke Skywalker in the first Star Wars movie - only for Han Solo to jet in and save the day.

24 "I've Killed Very Many Fathers. You'll Have To Be More Specific."

Star wars (2015) #2.

The first comic series of the rebooted Disney canon, Star Wars #2 by Jason Aaron and John Cassady reveals that Darth Vader fought Luke Skywalker years before The Empire Strikes Back . Vader casually dismisses Luke's anger over his father's murder and takes pride in having slain so many, unbalancing Luke even more. If Vader had been able to mention that Luke's lightsaber once belonged to him, Luke may have found out that his father was right in front of him three years earlier.

23 "He Will Join Us Or Die, Master!"

The empire strikes back.

"Now I am the master, " Darth Vader bragged to Obi-Wan Kenobi in their fateful final duel. But Darth Vader was actually just the Sith Apprentice , a fact Obi-Wan knew all too well. In The Empire Strikes Back , Vader receives orders to seduce his son to the dark side or kill him. He swears to do as he has been commanded. The Sith Rule of Two adds another dimension to this, of course; both Vader and Sidious know there can only be two Sith at any one time, and bringing Luke in will inevitably result in one of their deaths. The Sith Lords are playing a dangerous game.

22 "I Gave You A Choice. Live... or die."

Ahsoka season 1, episode 5 "part five: shadow warrior".

Ahsoka season 1 reunited Ahsoka Tano with the spirit of her former master , Anakin Skywalker, but he switched to his Darth Vader persona as the final test for her lesson. Although this line was already said earlier in the episode, it's impressive how intimidating it is when given new context. Combined with the red lightsaber and the menace in Anakin's eyes, Ahsoka is right to want to avoid a fight.

21 "If You're Not With Me, Then You're My Enemy!"

Star wars: episode iii - revenge of the sith.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith is technically the birth of Darth Vader, as Anakin Skywalker embraces the dark side and becomes a Sith. His old master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, pursues Anakin to the planet Mustafar, and this leads to a duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan in the most Hellish landscape imaginable. Even more disturbing, though, is the perspective Anakin has already adopted; " If you're not with me, then you're my enemy, " he tells Obi-Wan before the lightsabers are drawn. Fear, anger, resentment, and most of all, a lust for power shine through in this Darth Vader quote.

20 "You Were Weak When I Found You. Now, Your Hatred Has Become Your Strength. At Last, The Dark Side Is Your Ally."

Star wars: the force unleashed (legends).

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed may no longer be part of the official canon, but it still contains some of the best Darth Vader moments in the franchise. The game begins with Vader deeming his Sith apprentice, Starkiller, worthy of standing by his side, solidifying that he has embraced the dark side. It's a powerful way to start the game and show Vader's intimidating premise through the eyes of his young apprentice.

19 "The Emperor Is Not As Forgiving As I Am."

Return of the jedi.

This is one of the most chilling Darth Vader quotes. Continuing his conversation with Jerjerrod, Darth Vader warns that - as intimidating and dangerous as he may be - he isn't the one the Moff should be worried about. " The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am, " he observes. The comment serves an additional purpose for viewers, telling them that Palpatine makes Darth Vader look meek and mild.

18 "I Am Altering The Deal. Pray I Don't Alter It Any Further!"

Lando Calrissian learns the hard way that you don't strike a deal with Darth Vader . In The Empire Strikes Back , Lando is forced into a situation where he must betray his friends. When Calrissian begins to protest at Vader's unilateral rewriting of their gentleman's agreement, Vader swiftly puts him in his place. " I am altering the deal, " he tells Lando. " Pray I don't alter it any further! " Vader leaves Lando in no doubt about who has the power in this unwilling alliance.

17 "Be Careful Not To Choke On Your Aspirations, Director!"

Rogue one: a star wars story.

This particular Darth Vader quote is something of an acquired taste. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story featured some of the most thrilling Darth Vader scenes to date , but the Dark Lord of the Sith makes his first appearance when the ambitious Director Krennic attempts to go over Grand Moff Tarkin's head by appealing to Vader. Needless to say, Darth Vader isn't impressed by petty politicking. " Be careful not to choke on your aspirations, director, " Darth Vader tells him after giving Krennic a taste of Force choke.

16 "Your Strength Has Returned, But The Weakness Still Remains."

Obi-wan kenobi season 1, episode 3 "part iii".

Darth Vader's rematch with Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Disney+ TV show leaves the Sith Lord shaken. " Your strength has returned, " he is forced to acknowledge, " but the weakness still remains. " That weakness is compassion - and though Vader does not know it, it is love and compassion that will ultimately be the defeat of the Sith .

15 "The Emperor Will Show You The True Nature Of The Force. He Is Your Master Now."

Luke Skywalker surrenders to his father in Return of the Jedi , believing he can keep his enemies distracted so the rebels have a chance of success. Again, the dialogue serves to emphasize the truth that the Emperor is far more dangerous than Darth Vader; he is the one Palpatine calls master. The words are steeped in the arrogance and overconfidence that is so characteristic of the Sith.

14 "Then You Will Die Braver Than Most."

Star wars rebels season 2, episode 22 "twilight of the apprentice: part 2".

Darth Vader is one of the few Star Wars villains who can seamlessly turn a line of dialogue into a compliment and a taunt simultaneously. When Ezra Bridger boldly states that he is not afraid of Vader, the Sith Lord simply acknowledges that he'll be brave as he is inevitably killed. It's interesting to see Vader recognize strength in his enemies, even if his overconfidence makes him believe he will always emerge victorious.

13 "There Is No Escape! Don't Make Me Destroy You!"

The battle between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back is decidedly one-sided; Luke had only trained on Dagobah for a little while, after all, and he was still a rookie with a lightsaber. Vader ends the duel by slicing Luke's hand off at the wrist. With nowhere to run, Darth Vader warns Luke that he faces a stark choice; " There is no escape, " he intones. " Don't make me destroy you! "

12 "Your Destiny Lies With Me, Skywalker! Obi-Wan Knew This To Be True."

By the time of Return of the Jedi , Darth Vader has become convinced Luke Skywalker's destiny lies with him. There's a sense in which he's fighting to make this true, of course; while Jedi submit to the will of the Force, Sith attempt to subvert their own will upon it. This is the destiny Darth Vader wants to force on his son - but Luke refuses.

11 "You Don't Know The Power Of The Dark Side!"

Sith Lords crave power above all else , and Darth Vader is no different. Offered redemption by Luke, he initially rejects it; " You don't know the power of the dark side, " he replies. But the dark side is not more powerful than the light, as Vader would swiftly learn. His mind rejects Luke's arguments, but his heart pursues redemption when he sees his son being tortured by the Emperor.

10 "Have You Come To Destroy Me, Obi-Wan?"

Obi-wan kenobi season 1, episode 6 "part vi".

For many years, the Jedi believed Darth Vader to be the Chosen One - and interpreted that prophecy as meaning they would destroy the Sith. Darth Vader became a Sith, however, and in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ TV show, he considers the possibility his former master has taken it upon him to destroy him. The intent is inverted, of course; Darth Vader is the one who has come to destroy. Though Obi-Wan triumphs in this second duel, he cannot kill Anakin Skywalker.

9 "As Long As She Lives, I Will Always Control You."

Star wars: the force unleashed ii (legends).

The second Force Unleashed game ends with the roles reversed for Darth Vader and Starkiller, with the Sith Lord in chains and the former apprentice free of his power. However, as Starkiller calmly walks away, Vader gets the last word by reminding him that he will always be afraid to lose his love, Juno Eclipse, something Vader can use against him. Anakin's own history of losing Padmé Amidala adds greater context to the scene, and it is likely one of the few moments where Vader can sympathize with his apprentice.

8 "If You Will Not Turn To The Dark Side, Then Perhaps She Will! "

Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader both played a long game; the goal was to turn the other back to their respective side. As the Emperor watched the two fight, so too did he pay close attention to the emotional battle going on underneath the surface. Darth Vader uses his Force powers to peer into Luke's mind, catching a glimpse of Leia in his son's thoughts. This is all that is needed to provoke Luke into lashing out in rage.

7 "I Am What You Made Me!"

The Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ TV show features two confrontations between Darth Vader and his former master. In the first, Obi-Wan is weak and weary, filled with remorse, and practically cut off from the Force. Darth Vader effortlessly breaks through his defenses, tossing him around with the Force and leaving him badly burned. But words are his greatest weapon, as he taunts his old friend. " I am what you made me, " Darth Vader tells him.

6 "Anakin Skywalker Was Weak. I Destroyed Him."

Star Wars Rebels ' season 2 finale saw Darth Vader confront his own former apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, on the ancient Sith world of Malachor. Ahsoka has figured out Darth Vader's true identity and initially tries to reach him. She's immediately put in her place by Darth Vader; " Anakin Skywalker was weak, " he tells her. " I destroyed him. "
