Steam Train Experience

Steam Luxury Train Journeys

The very best UK Steam Train Trips

A steam train experience like no other, our steam train trips take passengers onboard beautifully restored, authentic 1920's and 1930's luxury trains across the UK. Departing from London and major cities across the midlands and North of England, our steam train experiences take passengers back to Golden Age of travel when steam travel was at its most popular. With authentic and beautifully restored carriages, a steam train trip with us will leave with you memories you'll cherish forever. A highlight of our steam train experiences is the Settle & Carlisle at Leisure onboard the Northern Belle and hauled by the Princess Elizabeth. Taking passengers through the Lakes & Dales, this is a truly special journey with royal connections. Other highlights include the Golden Age of Travel by Steam onboard the British Pullman , sister to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express . All of our steam train experiences include at least one multiple-course meal prepared fresh onboard by talented chefs. All trips are round-trips and last anywhere between five hours and a full-day. Steam trips with excursions include both a brunch on the outward journey and a four-course dinner on the return journey with around three to four hours time at leisure at the destination outlined in the itinerary.

If you’ve ever expressed a wish to see more of the British countryside, then now is your chance. As the new year blows its whistle and starts to leave the station, you can get yourself on board to see the UK like never before – from the comfort of an old-fashioned steam train.

Steam train experiences are smoking hot right now as more and more Brits are looking for luxury, with a hint of the Victorian era, in their days out. And whether you’re a train enthusiast or just fancy chugging through green fields, this list of experiences is the way to go.

A key British invention, the first steam locomotive debuted in 1804, created by inventor Richard Trevithick. By 1825, the first passenger train was up and running, carrying 450 people from Darlington to Stockton at 24kmh.

Nowadays, we rely on bullet trains and electric train travel - but even so, there’s something about the beauty and pace of the steam engine that we can’t quite leave behind. Last year, hundreds of people came out to see the iconic Flying Scotsman journey around the country, and of course, every September people head to King’s Cross and imagine themselves boarding the Hogwarts Express.

This list, put together by the RadioTimes.com team, includes steam train experiences from all over the country, from the rolling hills of the Lake District to the sea views of the Jurassic Coast. We’ve also included trips with added bonuses like afternoon tea or a full English breakfast, just to complete the patriotic experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can i travel on a steam train.

The UK offers a wide array of different steam train travel trips and routes. One popular steam train route in the UK is through the scenic North York Moors National Park, with stops in picturesque villages like Goathland (which was used as a filming location for the Harry Potter movies).

Another option are the East and West Somerset Railway, which run through the beautiful Somerset countryside and offer views of the coastline. The Spa Valley railway offers bucolic views across High Weald countryside; alternatively, the Lake District is home to one of the UK’s oldest narrow-gauge railways. There are plenty of different steam train routes spanning the country, most of them offering picturesque views and plenty of bygone-era charm.

Are there still steam trains in the UK?

There are still plenty of steam train experiences in the UK, dedicated to keeping the golden age of rail travel alive. Nowadays, most are used for tourism and heritage purposes, and there are several preserved railways throughout the country that operate steam trains for visitors to ride. It’s a brilliant way to experience the charm of the UK, both in terms of its quaint, slightly archaic charm, and its glorious countryside.

What is the most famous steam train?

The most famous steam train is likely the Flying Scotsman, which was built in 1923 and has since set numerous records and been featured in films and television shows, including Harry Potter. The Flying Scotsman became the first steam locomotive to reach 100 miles per hour in 1934.

The Northern Belle is also well-known for its luxurious passenger experience, with glorious views of the UK countryside complemented by world-class service, Champagne, gourmet fine dining and even live entertainment.

Another famous steam train is the Orient Express, which ran between Paris and Istanbul in the late 1800s. It was known for its luxurious accommodations and dining cars, and is still in operation today as a luxury tourist train. The train has been featured in many films and books, and it is considered an icon of the golden age of rail travel.

The Tyseley Story - Michael Whitehouse

Our Locomotives

Read reviews from our passengers.

I went with husband today on the Shakespeare Express. We had a wonderful time our ticket included a full breakfast on the outward journey and afternoon tea on the return journey. The food was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this for a wonderful day out. Can't wait to go again.

The Polar Express was a great family experience. If you’ve watched the movie then this hits the spot. There’s no CGI or fancy light show just good simple family fun. We loved it, great for younger children who’ve seen the movie.

We went for a ride out to Llandudno on Clun Castle. The whole thing was efficiency run and well organised. I've been on many heritage railways before but being able to ride on a steam train on the main railway lines was something else. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience!!!

Truly had the best time, did not really know what to expect but we had a fabulous time. The food was excellent, the staff were incredible and the entertainment was hilarious.. this is something you must get involved with if you want the best experience out of it.. all four of us would definitely do this again.

In the Summer I took my family, husband myself, and one of our children who is in a wheelchair, the staff were AMAZING to us, they were so considerate, helpful. Really cant say a big enough thank you to all of them, it made a beautiful day out even better. Looking forward to the Valentines dinning .....minus the kids x

We had a lovely day on a beautiful steam train by vintage trains all the staff were friendly and helpful from start to finish we dined in a Pullman car it is very recommended.

England's best heritage train routes

England’s iconic railways link thriving cities, picturesque villages and some of the country’s most striking and inaccessible autumn and winter scenery. With everything from modern locomotives to historic steam trains to choose from, a steam-powered adventure can be as big as your imagination. So jump aboard as we journey through the country’s rich railway heritage, for a train ride to remember.

The Night Riviera Sleeper

London Paddington

Dream of waking up to sprawling beaches, roaring surf and the winding coastal paths of the southwest following a trip on Great Western Railway’s  Night Riviera Sleeper . Linking London Paddington with a host of towns, cities and holiday resorts in Cornwall, the train offers comfortable one and two-bed compartments and a multitude of other facilities.

The Settle-Carlisle Railway

The Arten Gill Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

For a journey through the outdoor delights of the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines, plan a trip on the  Settle-Carlisle Railway . Dating back to the mid-19th century, the 73-mile stretch features notable tunnels and viaducts, and was the last mainline railway to be constructed almost entirely by hand. Following the natural landscape of the region, the train passes over the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct and through an array of lush moorlands on this railway adventure. Daily diesel train services run on the mainline, while specialist operators also run classic steam locomotives on selected days of the year.

Belmond British Pullman

London Victoria

Those yearning for stress-free, luxurious travel can embark on a lavish adventure through the countryside aboard a  Belmond British Pullman , whose restored carriages embody the golden age of 1920s and 1930s train travel. With routes to vibrant cities, ancient castles and grand estates, travel in style on the way to discovering the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath or the story behind William Churchill’s birthplace at Blenheim Palace.

There are a number of iconic railway hotels to discover in London, including a landmark of Victorian splendour, the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel . Overlooking St Pancras Station, it dates back to 1873 and is inseparably linked to the railways. Having taken over much of the premises of the Midland Grand Hotel, designed by George Gilbert Scott, the luxurious five-star accommodation has a rich and eclectic history. Its centrepiece is a stunning Victorian Gothic staircase, lovingly restored to its 1901 glory. Alternatively, opt for a stay in the ‘world’s first grand railway hotel’, right in the heart of Kings Cross St Pancras. The lavish  Great Northern Hotel  opened its doors in 1854 and has been welcoming travellers ever since.

Bluebell Railway

Sheffield Park Station

As one of England’s first preserved heritage railway lines, the Bluebell Railway includes a fine collection of vintage steam locomotives, which run along an 11-mile stretch of track in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Railway lovers can experience the recreated trains, hailing from the 1880s through to the 1960s.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway

Cheltenham Race Course Station

Surrounded by spectacular views of the Cotswolds, the  Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway  crisscrosses its way past sleepy hamlets and fields sparkling with autumn frost. You can venture from Cheltenham Racecourse to Broadway as steam fills the air, whizzing past chocolate-box cottages and winding country lanes in the process. Breathtaking vistas of the Malvern Hills, Wales and the Vale of Evesham await.

The Swanage Railway

Swanage Station

A steam train on the heritage Swanage Railway line.

Dream of following a historic route from Victorian times along England’s south coast from Wareham to Swanage, a trip that originally cost travellers 11 old pence! The Swanage Railway  stretches for nearly 10 miles and travels through Dorset’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in vintage style, past rolling hills, atmospheric winter woodland and even William the Conqueror’s  Corfe Castle . With its roots hailing back to 1885, the numerous vintage steam-hauled locomotives take you on a journey through the ages, arriving at (or departing from) the Victorian resort of Swanage. Having adhered to the We’re Good To Go industry standard, trains from Swanage to Norden station resumed in mid-July. Head to the  Swanage Railway website  for the latest information.

If you’re dreaming of waking up to stunning sea views, you can book a stay at the luxurious Pines Hotel , Swanage. Offering a serene setting in which to switch off, many of the rooms feature stunning sea-facing balconies.

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway

Havenstreet Station

Both a vintage steam train museum and functioning train line, the award-winning  Isle of Wight Steam Railway  is a dream-worthy day out if you want to experience more than  150 years  of transport history.  The 10-mile line allows you to travel in vintage carriages and wagons, pulled by impressive steam locomotives, with a number of historic station stops along the way. A highlight stop is the restored 1940s Havenstreet station, which houses a train discovery centre, fascinating museum and wagon workshops.

History buffs can look forward to staying in the Grade-II listed  Arreton Manor , a private house that has been owned by no less than eight monarchs. It’s now open to overnight guests and the annexed Nook has its own take on modern yet rustic décor, offering a cosy space with traditional timber beams and a majestic king-sized bed.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Pickering Station

A traditional steam train in the North York Moors National Park.

A dazzling example of a heritage railway, if you’re longing for a dose of ‘slow travel’ why not dream of absorbing the stunning Yorkshire countryside aboard the  North Yorkshire Moors Railway . Stops along the 24-mile route include the chance to travel back to the 1930s at the restored Pickering station, the 1912-themed Levisham station, and Grosmont station – which film enthusiasts might recognise as the filming location for Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films. This line takes you to one of Yorkshire’s historic gems, the coastal town of  Whitby , where you can plan to see ancient ruins, walk the famous 100 steps and enjoy a traditional portion of fish and chips, a hearty traditional treat for the cooler months!

Those wanting to add a touch of modern luxury to their heritage adventure can book a stay at  Horngarth , nestled in the heart of Whitby. Alternatively, if you’re seeking a relaxing night in more traditional surroundings, you can plan a stay at Whitby’s 16th century  Bagdale Hall Hotel . Complete with beamed ceilings, stone mullion windows and grand four-poster beds, you’ll feel as if you’re waking up in England's Tudor past!

Ravenglass and Eksdale Railway

Ravenglass Station

Winding through the foothills of England’s highest mountains, the seven-mile open-air  Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway  passes some of the most dramatic landscapes in all of Britain. Dating back to 1875, the route begins at Ravenglass, the Lake District National Park’s only coastal town. It passes a number of stops along the way, including Muncaster Mill and Beckfoot before arriving at Dalegarth station in Eskdale – all great spots for hikes through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lake District, which promises a sea of autumn colour and memorable winter rambles. If you fancy a touch of opulence, you can dream of boarding the first-class observation carriage for the best views of the stunning scenery passing by.

Why not plan to end a day of Lake District discovery in the four-star 16th century  Sella Park Country House Hotel , in a setting that includes peaceful gardens that sweep down to the River Calder.

The North Norfolk Railway

Holt Station

Plan a tranquil trip through decades of heritage by booking a journey along the 10-mile  North Norfolk Railway . Each of their stations offer a steam-adorned trip through glorious by-gone eras, taking in the enamouring countryside of North Norfolk along a route featuring epic woodlands to the south and the tranquil coastline to the north.

The last station stop is Sheringham, a traditional seaside town wonderfully located for scenic winter walks. Those wanting to spend a restful night here can stay at the nearby  Dales Country House .

Tanfield Railway

Steam locomotive N.C.B No.49 with a colliery passenger train steaming along the Tanfield Railway, the World's Oldest Railway in North East England

Climb aboard the world's oldest railway in County Durham, where you'll journey through six miles of rolling countryside and wooded valleys along the Tanfield Railway . This steam train is decked out in decadent Victorian carriages, letting you immerse in a bygone era. Look out for Causey Arch - it's said to be the world's oldest surviving single-arch railway bridge.

South East England's best steam train trips

Bluebell railway , east sussex.

The volunteer-run Bluebell Line was the UK's first preserved standard gauge passenger railway, re-opening part of the Lewes to East Grinstead line of the old London Brighton & South Coast Railway in 1960.

Since then it has developed into one of the largest tourist attractions in Sussex, yet it still remains true to its objectives of the preservation for posterity of a country branch line, its steam locomotives, coaches and goods stock, signalling systems, stations and operating practices.

Didcot Railway Centre , Oxfordshire

The Great Western Railway was incorporated in 1835 to build the railway from Bristol to London, designed and engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Members of the Great Western Society have created a living museum at Didcot, based around the original engine shed and depot to which has been added a typical branchline and country station, signalling demonstrations and a recreation of Brunel's original broad gauge trackwork, complete with a replica of the Fire Fly locomotive built in 1840.

Kent & East Sussex Steam Railway , Kent

The picturesque line weaves between Tenterden and Bodiam for more than 10 miles. England's finest rural light railway enables visitors to experience steam train trips and service from a bygone age aboard beautifully restored coaches and locomotives dating from Victorian times. The earliest plans for a railway for Tenterden were made in the 1850s.

Top-Rated Tours Based in York

Absolutely amazing journey I’d do again! Informative, exciting, and wonderful! Chris, our guide/driver did a fantastic job!

This was a wonderful tour. Chris was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and the sites. It was a small group, and being picked up and dropped off at our hotel was so convenient; so it was like having your own personal tour guide. There are dramatic landscapes and poignant moments in historic churches and ruins. There were enough stops along the way, and enough time in Whitby to do your own thing. I would highly recommend this tour! KL

This was the most amazing day ever! We were all All Creatures Great and Small fans so it made for a great day seeing all the sites. Chris was so accommodating! This tour is worth every penny to be able to focus on what you really want to see! I would do it again if I come back to York!

I can’t say enough about this tour. It was absolutely fantastic. I honestly can say I have never had a better tour guide. Chris literally drives you through his home and provides a wonderful balance of history and lore as he takes you along back roads that lead to areas only he knows about. He even added an extra piece to the end of the tour, which he could have secretly skipped. He is also very personable, talking about home life growing up in the area. The tour itself was fantastic and it was brought to exceptional life with the help of our tour guide. This is a must for those who want to experience the history and culture of Yorkshire.

12 of the best steam train rides in the UK and Europe

Travel in style through stunning scenery with these amazing steam train experiences

Steam train rides

Steam train rides are one of life’s great pleasures, transporting you across beautiful landscapes and taking you back in time to the refined golden age of travel.

From the Jacobite steam train in the Scottish Highlands to the Brocken Railway in Germany, there are so many beautiful steam train rides to experience across Europe.

Britain alone has an array of wonderful ways to explore our wonderful countryside by train. You could take in the coast and heathlands of Norfolk on the North Norfolk Railway , stopping at Victorian stations along the way.

To witness one of the best views in the UK, you'll want to travel to Mount Snowdon, where the Snowdon Mountain Railway glides along at 3,493 feet above sea level, rewarding you with panoramic views over the Snowdonia National Park .

Whether you're travelling to North Wales or Austrian Tyrol, there's a perfect steam train experience waiting for you. Here's our pick of the best steam train rides to tick off your travel bucket list...

Jacobite, Scottish Highlands

Steam train rides: Glenfinnan Viaduct

The Fort William to Mallaig railway line is frequently voted the world's greatest steam train rides. Taking you through stunning scenery, including tranquil lochs and mighty mountains like Ben Nevis, this railway line's Jacobite steam train became famous when it was featured in the Harry Potter films.

It combines the romance of the steam era with the opportunity to drink in the stunning views of this wild and historic part of Scotland. One of the highlights of a ride on this historic line is travelling over the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct overlooking Loch Sheil.

Experience a ride on the Jacobite Express as part of Country Living's exclusive Scottish rail adventure with Kirsty Wark. You'll also enjoy a voyage on the Firth of Clyde, on the world's last ocean-going paddle steamer, the historic and elegant PS Waverley.

North Norfolk Railway, Norfolk

Steam train rides

Known as the Poppy Line, the North Norfolk Railway is one of the greatest heritage railways in Britain. It takes you on a breathtakingly scenic ride from Sheringham along the coast to Weybourne and through the beautiful heathland to Holt.

The line is operated almost entirely by volunteers who have won many prestigious awards over the years for turning this once derelict line into a thriving tourist attraction. There are three Victorian stations that you can marvel at along the way as you chug through some of Norfolk's prettiest towns and villages , enjoying delightful coastal views as you go.

Experience the Poppy Line on a Norfolk adventure with historian Country Living. You'll ride the train along the coast and through wildlife-rich heathland as well as taking a paddle boat cruise on the Broads and visiting Sandringham with royal expert and author Lucy Worsley.

Achensee Steam Cog Railway, Austria

Steam train rides in Europe - Achensee

Austria’s Alpine landscapes are known for their dramatic steep valleys and glittering lakes – an amazing backdrop to ride the charming Achensee Cog Railway. Running since the late 1800s, it’s Europe’s oldest coal-fired steam engine, carrying passengers from Jenbach past wildflower meadows and dense forest and up to the shores of Lake Achensee.

There are two trains still running on this line, nicknamed Hermann and Georg, which puff along the line taking visitors to the station in Maurach, where they can enjoy a leisurely panoramic boat cruise on Lake Achensee.

Furka Railway, Switzerland

Steam train of the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway

Thanks to the work of dedicated heritage rail enthusiasts, this lofty stretch of track was re-opened to run steam trains on in 2010, after the opening of Furka Base Tunnel had made the old line unnecessary for purely practical journeys.

But if it’s mountain views you’re after, the Furka steam line is the second highest railway in Switzerland, after the famous Bernina Railway. Chug along 2,160 metres above sea level on a route that takes you between the pretty villages of Realp and Oberwald.

Brocken Railway, Germany

steam train rides

This route takes you high up into northern German’s snow-capped Harz Mountains, making for magical scenes as you chug along the tracks through fairytale villages.

With scenes straight out of a postcard, a trip along this route – which operates regular commercial steam services – is a wonderful way to while away a holiday afternoon, joining locals and commuters who use the route regularly for everyday business.

Bluebell Railway, Sussex

steam train rides

Running between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead in lovely Sussex, the Bluebell Railway is arguably England’s best steam train ride. It's Britain’s oldest preserved standard-gauge railway and shows off the region’s beautiful bluebells as they come into bloom each spring.

The historic carriages, including two 1920s Pullman carriages, and its enchanting stations are highlights of this wonderful steam train ride.

Try a ride on the Bluebell Railway yourself on a Sussex staycation. There are so many lovely hotels to choose from in the county, but one of our favourites is Gravetye Manor, just a ten-minute drive from the Bluebell Railway's East Grinstead station.

Snowdon Mountain Railway, Wales

Steam train rides Europe - Snowdon Mountain Railway

Climb to the top of Wales’ highest mountain without tiring yourself out on this incredible Victorian steam journey. At the summit - 3,493 feet above sea level - you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Snowdonia National Park, recently voted the best view in Britain.

Bright green fields and the deep greens and browns of woodland stretch as far as the eye can see, with grazing sheep and picturesque dry-stone walls to look out for. If you want to discover the best of Snowdonia without any strenuous hikes, why not book yourself a Snowdonia staycation and see the best of this heavenly National Park by rail?

Steam tram, Holland

Hoorn steam tram

Though technically a steam tram rather than a train, there’s plenty to love about this historical journey, which takes you by traditional steam engine from Hoorn’s fascinating railway museum to Medemblik. From there you can take a picturesque boat trip across the IJsselmeer Lake to Enkhuizen, and then catch a modern train back to Hoorn.

On the way you’ll take in all the beautiful scenery in the countryside around Amsterdam, including the millions of tulips that are grown here, ready to be sent all over Europe.

Belmond British Pullman, UK

steam train rides

The Belmond British Pullman is one of the UK's most luxurious trains, travelling year-round to various destinations around the country, including Kent, Winchester, York and the Cotswolds. The restored 1920s train has delighted travellers, from royals to Hollywood stars, with its heritage upholstery, decadent on-board dining and antique-style marquetry.

On selected dates, the historic train is pulled by steam engines for a nostalgic ride through Britain's epic scenery. On your rail journey , delight in a wonderful fine dining experience, and taste food inspired by the surrounding English countryside, made by expert chefs using fresh local produce.

Cevennes Steam Train, France

Steam train rides - The Cevenne steam train, Gard, Occitanie, France

There are few more atmospheric ways to take in the sun-soaked countryside of Provence than by travelling in an old open carriage along ancient viaducts, with the sound of whistles and smell of steam filling the air.

That’s exactly what you can do on the Cévennes Steam Train, between Anduze and Saint-Jean-du-Gard. Along the way, you’ll cross the Gardon River, the Gypières and Amous Valleys and ride through the intriguing gardens of La Bambouseraie.

Flying Scotsman, London to Edinburgh

Steam train rides: Flying Scotsman

Easily one of the best ways to make the journey through the UK up to Scotland, the London to Edinburgh East Coast Main Line takes you through Britain’s changing landscapes. The Flying Scotsman is over 100 years old, and was the first train in the UK to travel at speeds of 100 miles per hour.

It's now one of the most famous locomotives in the world, and takes passengers from the golden fields of the south east of England, through majestic hills, past stone cities and up into the rugged thickets of the Scottish border, finally arriving in Edinburgh, easily one of the country's most romantic cities.

The Flying Scotsman takes you into Edinburgh Waverly station, right in the heart of this culture-rich city. You'll have plenty of hotels to choose from if you fancy a Scottish city break, but we love The Scotsman, located right next to the station in an impressive Edwardian building.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway, North Yorkshire

Steam train rides, North York Moors, Yorkshire, UK

One way to see the best of Yorkshire’s rugged rural landscapes is to travel by steam train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from the pretty market town of Pickering to Whitby, where you’ll taste some of the freshest fish and chips the UK has to offer.

Pickering Station is a wonderful see 1930s-themed station that will really make you feel like you've stepped back in time to the golden age of steam train travel. Once on board, you'll puff for 24 scenic miles through the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, where the views on all sides will make you fall in love with the English countryside all over again.

Two classic steam locos running through Shropshire on Saturday - when and where to see them

A pair of steam engines will be making their way through Shropshire and mid Wales on Saturday.

steam train excursions uk

The train is called the Great Britain XVI, a nine-day tour of the UK which started in London last weekend and has since visited places such as Kent, Inverness and Liverpool.

On Saturday, the penultimate day of the excursion, the train will be heading from Merseyside to Swansea; a journey that's expected to take 10 hours.

After leaving Liverpool Lime Street at 9am, the train heads through Runcorn and down to Chester. After a 35-minute stop it continues down to Shrewsbury and on to Craven Arms where it turns right and onto the Heart of Wales line, through Knighton and Llandrindod Wells, towards Swansea, where it's due to arrive at 7.17pm.

The train will be pulled by two former London Midland & Scotish Railway (LMS) Black 5 locomotives, nos. 44871 and 45407, which were built in 1945 and 1937 respectively.

Once, 842 of these machines, which were designed to pull passenger and goods trains, existed - operating from the top of Scotland down to the Dorset coast.
