10 Best Stellenbosch Wineries in South Africa (2024)

Vineyard at one of the Stellenbosch wineries with mountains in the background

When it comes to the ultimate wine country trip, South Africa and its Stellenbosch wineries always top my list.

Not only do they offer incredible wines that are an excellent bang for your buck, but the region itself is simply stunning. And let’s not forget about the mouthwatering food!

But with more than 150 wineries in Stellenbosch to choose from, it can be hard to narrow your list down. That’s where I come in.

As a certified wine expert, I’ve personally explored the region and hand-picked the cream of the crop. This curated list includes my absolute favorite Stellenbosch wine farms. And I’ve put together all the details to plan your visit. So let’s get started!

The 10 Best Stellenbosch Wineries

While there are many great options in this wine region, these are some of the best wineries in Stellenbosch for exceptional wines, beautiful views, and wonderful hospitality.

1. Rust en Vrede

Rust en Vrede restaurant building

The Governor of Cape Town, one of the original South African winemakers, granted the land for the Rust en Vrede property all the way back in 1694. And the current owners, the Engelbrecht family, acquired it in 1977.

Jannie and Ellen Engelbrecht first tackled restoring the beautiful Cape Dutch buildings on the property to their former glory. And then produced their first vintage of wine in 1978.

The vineyards are planted on the warmer north-facing slopes, ideal conditions for making some of South Africa’s best red wines.

In fact, Nelson Mandela selected Rust en Vrede wines to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner. Not to mention, they had the first South African red wine named to Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines in the World.

Wines to Try

Their Cabernet Sauvignons are stunning, with concentrated blackcurrant flavors balanced with fresh acidity. I also love their soft and elegant style Syrahs. And don’t miss trying their Estate blend for a Bordeaux-style wine with a Syrah twist.

Enjoy a wine tasting on their picturesque terrace, overlooking the lush lawn. Then ask the tasting room staff for an informal tour to get a peek at the underground wine cellar.

And if you’re a foodie, don’t miss their award-winning restaurant. Named one of San Pellegrino’s Top 100 Restaurants in the World, they serve up contemporary French cuisine with inspiration from the chef’s Brazilian and Italian heritage.

Make it a stop for lunch with a glass of wine. Or splurge for the 6-course dinner with wine pairings. Just be sure to make a reservation well in advance.

2. Warwick Estate

Warwick picnic area

Norma Ratliffe is credited with being the first female winemaker to operate commercially in South Africa. She, along with her husband Stan, bought the land for Warwick Wine Estate in 1964.

It took about 20 years to release their first wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon named La Femme Bleau. Not long after, they bottled South Africa’s first-ever Cape Blend, whose claim to fame is a cameo in a James Bond film.

Today, Warwick makes blends and single-varietal wines, many with their signature “lady” names.

Fun fact: The Wedding Cup symbol on their label comes from the legend of Princess Kunigunde. Her father disapproved of her love for a young goldsmith. He challenged the goldsmith to make a cup that two people could drink from at the same time.

The goldsmith’s love of the princess was so great that he succeeded in this seemingly impossible task within a matter of days. The two were able to marry and live happily ever after (or at least enjoy drinking wine together out of their new fancy cup).

Warwick outdoor tasting area

Don’t miss the Three Cape Ladies, a Pinotage-based Cape Blend. And the award-winning Trilogy blend, with spicy peppery notes from Cabernet Franc. I also loved their crisp Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

Warwick is the perfect place for a winery picnic. The lawn is dappled with blankets and oversized pillows that you can recline on like royalty. Enjoy a gourmet picnic box with a bottle of wine. Or book the Harvest Table for a 4-course meal in their majestic forest courtyard.

For those seeking adventure, see if you can spot the “big five” on a wine safari. No, we’re not talking about lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, and rhinos. These are the big five grapes! Hop on an open-top safari vehicle to tour Warwick vineyards and learn all about grape growing from your “safari guide.”

3. Simonsig Wine Estate

Simonsig winery

For you bubbly lovers, Méthode Cap Classique is South Arica’s answer to Champagne. And Simonsig Wine Estate is home to the original version. Frans Malan, the founder, produced the first bottle in South Africa.

These wines are made in the traditional method used for Champagne . This is when a secondary fermentation happens in the bottle. This gives the wine those delicious notes of toast and brioche.

Simonsig makes a range of these sparklers, from dry (Brut) to sweet (Demi-Sec). Plus, rosé and a Blanc de Blanc (meaning a white wine made from white grapes).

Simonsig large wine barrel

Their sparkling wines are delicious. And Simonsig also makes excellent still wines. You can try reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and Syrah. Or whites from Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and even Gewürztraminer.

Walk-ins are welcome, but I recommend making a reservation on weekends or for larger groups. Grab one of their artisanal cheese and charcuterie platters to accompany your tasting.

While there, you may even get to witness a Sabrage demonstration. This technique is used to open a bottle of sparkling wine with a saber (yes, like a sword!). You slide the blunt side of it up the neck of the bottle and, with enough force, it will break the top of the neck off.

Which wine region should you visit? Click to take the quiz.

4. Delheim Wine Estate

Delheim wine barrels and old bicycle

The original vineyards of Delheim Wine Estate were planted in the 1940s. Michael Sperling, known as “Spatz” to those in the know, took over the winery in the late 1950s.

Spatz taught himself winemaking, began winning awards, and became a major player in South African wine. In 1971, he got together with Frans Malan of Simonsig and Neil Joubert of Spier Wine Farm and created the Stellenbosch wine route, the first in South Africa.

Delheim outdoor wine tasting patio

You’ll find some unique wines here, like the Spatzendreck dessert wine made from white grapes left on the vine to dry out (a technique called passerillage). This concentrates the sugars and, after barrel aging, results in luscious flavors of dried fruits, honey, and toasted almonds.

If you’re a rosé lover, try the Pinotage Rosé, the first of its kind when it was released in 1976. And I personally loved their Grand Reserve, a smooth Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

A tasting on their garden patio is lovely, with a beautiful view of Table Mountain. But for some real character, I recommend heading to the downstairs cellar. The old-bottle-lined walls and cobweb-filled windows give it an authentic feel you won’t see elsewhere.

While you’re there, you can enjoy dishes like Springbok carpaccio, lamb shank, and bacon benedict at their on-site restaurant. And for those with a sweet tooth, try the cupcake and dessert wine pairing!

5. Thelema Mountain Vineyards

Thelema winery

From working as an accountant to selling out wines within a month of release in just a decade, Gyles Webb is the Cinderella story of Stellenbosch.

After falling in love with Burgundy, Gyles and family founded Thelema in 1983. The first wines were released in 1988. And they became so successful that they bought a second vineyard in 2002, which is bottled under the Sutherland label.

Thelema wines are warmer-climate varieties grown in Stellenbosch. Sutherland wines are a cool-climate style with grapes grown in Elgin Valley, a high-altitude plateau cooled by ocean breezes.

Thelema vineyard with mountains in background

A comparative tasting of the Thelema and Sutherland wines is a great way to see how climate and terroir impacts the style of wine.

I love Thelema’s bold and complex Cabernet Sauvignons. They’re one of my regular purchases back home since visiting. But if you’re more of a Burgundy lover, the Sutherland Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are excellent too.

Reservations are recommended for tastings at their beautiful estate. You’ll be surrounded by stunning mountain views. And if you take any bottles with you, your tasting is on the house.

6. Beyerskloof

Beyerskloof outdoor table overlooking vineyard

If you’re a fan of Pinotage, Beyerskloof is the place for you. Founded in 1988 by Beyers Truter, this Stellenbosch wine farm won best Pinotage at the 2018 International Wine & Spirits Competition.

They use bush vines and strive for smaller berries. This makes the wines more concentrated and complex.

Beyers’ son Anri currently runs Beyerskloof and focuses almost exclusively on Pinotage and Pinotage blends.

Beyerskloof winery sign

The Pinotage is of course where it’s at here. I love their traditional red style. But they also produce it as a nice dry rosé. And even as a white wine blended with Chenin Blanc.

Wine tasting flights include options for a mix of five white, rosé, and red wines, or all red wines. Or you can book a private tasting of their premium wines and older vintages in the Winemaker’s Cellar.

And if you’re hungry, check out the Red Leaf Bistro where you can dine while overlooking the vines. Don’t miss their specialty — the Pinotage burger with an onion reduction made with…you guessed it, Pinotage.

If you don’t make it to their winery, Beyerskloof also has a wine bar (called Wynbar) in downtown Stellenbosch where you can sample their wines and snack on some sliders and “sarmies.”

Tokara vineyard

For a modern, yet family-friendly winery option, check out Tokara . The name comes from a combination of the founders’ children’s names, Thomas and Kara.

And if great wines, delicious olive oil, a farm-to-table restaurant, and an art gallery weren’t enough, they also have an outdoor play area for the little ones.

Tokara is perched on the side of a hill, with sweeping views of the surrounding vineyard-lined slopes. The first vines were planted in the mid-90s on the upper slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. These sit next to their olive groves, from which they produce olive oil that rivals the ones I tasted at Crete wineries .

Tokara winery sign

Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc are the speciality here. But you’ll also find Chardonnay, Syrah, and Semillon. These are made as both blends from different sites and as single vineyard wines.

And if your a fan of spirits, check out their Chenin Blanc-based brandy. Plus, they make a delicious dessert wine from nobly rotted Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

Book ahead to sample Tokara’s wines and olive oil. Enjoy a cheese platter with your tasting or grab a bite from the delicatessen. Afterward, you can stroll through the art gallery and sculpture park to walk off all that food.

For a special treat, make a dinner reservation, which includes a four or six-course chef’s menu with wine pairings.

8. Neethlingshof Estate

Vines have been grown on the Neethlingshof vineyards since the late 1600s. It’s changed hands a few times since then, but today the Schreiber Family owns it. And they produce a variety of different vegan-friendly estate-grown wines.

Tasting options include samples from their Estate Range of nearly a dozen white and red single-variety wines. I also recommend tasting the Short Story Collection, with each wine representing a different tale from Neethlingshof’s history. They also offer fun food experiences like chocolate pairing.

If you’re looking for a good lunch spot, Neethlingshof has a deli and a wine garden with a selection of pizzas and platters. And you can enjoy live music on Wednesday evenings.

9. Meerlust Estate

Meerlust is one of the oldest wine farms. The Myburgh family has been producing wine on the Meerlust Estate for eight generations. They specialize in red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir.

Their flagship wine is the Rubicon, one of my favorite wines from South Africa. This Bordeaux-style blend was inspired by Nico Myburgh’s trip to France in the 1970s. And I’ve tried a number of their other wines and they’re all excellent.

You can taste the full range and learn about the history of Meerlust in their wine tasting room. And if you’re looking for unique places to stay in wine country, check out their on-site accommodation options.

vineyard with mountains in background

10. Kanonkop Wine Estate

For you Pinotage lovers, Kanonkop is a must-visit. This red-wine-only producer is one of the best examples of Pinotage I’ve tasted.

You can even do a Pinotage-only tasting, including six different wines made from the grape. Other options include sampling Kanonkop’s full range of current vintage wines. And single samples of their premium Estate range.

While you’re there, don’t miss taking a self-guided tour of their cellar and visiting the art gallery.

Best Stellenbosch Wine Tour

Wine tours are a great way to explore the Stellenbosch region without having to drive yourself.

I’d recommend this private tour that allows you to customize your itinerary based on the wineries you’re most interested in visiting.

Or if you’re looking for a more affordable option or like the social aspect of a group tour, this is a great full-day tour that visits some of the top wineries.

The picturesque town of Stellenbosch is about a half-hour drive from Cape Town International Airport. It’s the second oldest town in South Africa, known for its Cape Dutch architecture. And it’s home to the University of Stellenbosch.

The Eendracht Hotel is a great boutique hotel option that’s also a fantastic value. It’s right in the center of town just steps from all the best restaurants and wine bars. The hotel also serves up a delicious complimentary breakfast.

FAQs About Visiting Wineries in Stellenbosch

What wine is produced in stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch is known for top-quality red wines. The region specializes in Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which are often blended to create a Bordeaux-style wine . You’ll also see quite a bit of Syrah too.

For whites, Chenin Blanc is the most widely planted grape in South Africa. It’s made in both dry and sweet styles and sometimes sees oak. In cooler sites, they’ve been successful with growing high-quality Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay as well.

South Africa is also credited with creating the Pinotage grape. This crossing between Pinot Noir and Cinsault is often described as having flavors of chocolate and coffee. And it’s the main component in what’s known as a Cape Blend.

When is the Best Time to Visit Stellenbosch Wineries?

If you’re traveling from the Northern Hemisphere, keep in mind that the seasons are reversed in South Africa. So, the grape harvest in Stellenbosch usually happens at the beginning of the year (January to March). These are also some of the warmest months.

I recommend visiting the Cape Winelands during March, April, September, or December. These are the best months for great weather and you’ll avoid peak season.

How Many Wineries Are There in Stellenbosch?

The Stellenbosch region has more than 150 wineries.

Do You Need Reservations for Stellenbosch Wineries?

While not all Stellenbosch wine estates require reservations, it’s a good idea to book ahead. Especially during the busy season so you don’t miss out on visiting your top choices.

How Much is a Tasting at Stellenbosch Wine Farms?

Stellenbosch has incredibly affordable wine tastings compared to other wine regions. Most are in the $5 range but you’ll find some are as little as $2. Plus, if you buy a bottle, they’ll often waive your tasting fee.

Is There a Train From Cape Town to Stellenbosch?

There isn’t a train that goes from Cape Town to Stellenbosch. But South Africa does have rideshare apps like Uber that would be a good option. And at less than a 45 minutes drive, it’s definitely doable as a day trip.

Stellenbosch Wine Region

Stellenbosch’s climate and terroir.

Beyerskloof vineyard

When you think Africa, you think hot, right? Based on its latitude, the Stellenbosch region should have a hot climate. In fact, it does have a Mediterranean climate, meaning temperatures are fairly consistent year-round. And summers (i.e., the growing season) tend to be warm and dry.

But there are a few things that cool down the Western Cape of South Africa. And this makes it an ideal location for wine grape growing.

First, you have the Benguela Current. This brings icy-cold water up from Antarctica. It flows along the west coast of Africa, making the South Ocean pretty darn chilly.

Then there’s the Cape Doctor. What does a doctor have to do with wine you ask? Well, this isn’t your stethoscope-wearing-prescription-wielding kind of doctor. It’s the local name for the strong summer winds that bring cool air from the ocean further inland.

On top of all of that, you’ve got the surrounding mountains. These sky-scraping beauties channel the winds from nearby False Bay through the vineyards, cooling them further.

They also give plenty of options for planting at higher altitudes to get off the warm valley floors. And vines can be planted on south-facing slopes, which see less sun and heat than those that face north toward the equator.

History of South African Wine

Boekenhoutskloof red grapes in vineyard

South African wine is somewhere between Old World and New World. The country has been making wine as far back as the 1600s. But they had a few hiccups along the way that have prevented them from gaining international popularity.

The first wines were made by Dutch settlers during the days when Cape Town was a stopover for The Dutch East India Company. At the time, wine was thought to prevent scurvy. We’re not sure how good the wine was, but it at least appeased all those drunken sailors!

Moving into the 1700s and 1800s, dessert wines were all the rage throughout the world. And South Africa became famous for Constantia, a sweet wine originally produced by the Governor of Cape Town.

Then South African wines took a big hit in the late 1800s when phylloxera arrived. The root louse wiped out pretty much all the vineyards.

And just when they were starting to recover, apartheid began in 1948. Many countries boycotted products from South Africa. So, the wines were essentially cut off from the rest of the world.

Since apartheid’s end in 1994, it’s taken some time to get visibility in the wine industry. But South African wines are on the rise.

Today, there are more than 500 wineries in South Africa, and it’s becoming a hot spot for wine tourism.

Their Runner Duck variety is aptly named, considering the farm on the estate is home to over 1,200 Indian Runner Ducks. But these duckies aren’t just adorable, they’re there for a special purpose: pest control. The ducks consume the snails and bugs that threaten the vines during their daily rounds.

Winetraveler Tip: Make sure to tour the duck pens and breeding rooms post-wine-tasting with a duck herd guide. Or, enjoy one of the duck parades at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm and 3:30 pm seven days a week.

Cupcakes & Wine at Delheim

If you’ve always wanted to test out how cupcakes and wine mesh, you can do so at Delheim . And not to spoil the outcome, but they actually fit perfectly together. The tasting, which costs about $8.50, features four unique cupcakes each with its own special wine pairing. The honeybush cupcake highlights the Chardonnay Sur Lie’s fruity, floral flavors, while the rooibos cupcake topped with cream cheese and cinnamon highlights the nuanced oak flavors of the Pinotage. The tasting is available daily between 10:00 am and 4:30 pm.

Winetraveler Tip: You’ll never have to worry about lack of freshness at Delheim — all of the cupcakes are baked fresh daily.

Olive Oil & Wine at Morgenster

Morgenster is just as famous for its olive oil as its wine, and they produce pure extra virgin olive oil with no additives. The wine range includes Bordeaux-style blends as well as Italian varieties. You can sample the full range of olive oils paired with three wines for about $5.50. The estate is especially beautiful as less than half is used to house the vines and olive trees. The rest of the lush land is wild and serene.

Winetraveler Tip: Have lunch at the onsite restaurant, 95 at Morgenster , pre- or post-tasting.

Chocolate & Wine at Spier

The grounds at Spier Wine Farm are simply gorgeous, with an onsite lake and even a hotel. The tasting room is luminous and airy, the perfect place to pair wine and chocolate. Sample three of the Spier Creative Block blends paired with special chocolates, both white and dark. This particular tasting is $5, and if you aren’t feeling the chocolate you can always just do a wine and cheese tasting instead.

Winetraveler Tip: Bring the kids along — they can try the children’s grape juice tasting ($3), which includes a play packet, a tasting of two different grape juices, and an educational activity sheet.

Bubbles, Sabrage & Boozy Popsicles at House of J.C. Le Roux

If you ever wanted to open sparkling wine with a sword, this demonstration at J.C. Le Roux will show you how with a traditional ceremonial sabrage demonstration. Plus, you’ll sample four different sparkling wines from the Methode Cap Classiques collection ($7). You can always accompany your bubbly with a platter of cheese or fresh oysters. Make sure to book at least 24 hours in advance.

Winetraveler Tip: Enjoy a refreshing sparkling wine popsicle on a hot day. These come in three flavors: strawberry and Sauvignon Blanc, litchi and Vibrazio demi-sec and a non-alcoholic strawberry and cream option.

This safari is a little different from others in South Africa — instead of lions, expect to see a lot of vines! But the concept is the same: you’ll take a safari vehicle deep out into the 120-hectare Waterford Wine Estate , which is bordered by the Helderberg Mountain (the three-hour adventure is about $90). You’ll learn all about the estate’s organic wine cultivation and of course, enjoy a wine tasting complete with snacks. If you prefer to stroll instead of ride, the winery also offers wine walks of varying intensity which also culminate in wine tasting and a light lunch ($38).

Winetraveler Tip: Wine safaris must be booked a week or more in advance.

Getting to Stellenbosch, Where to Stay, & Tour Options

To explore Stellenbosch vineyards, you’ll first have to get yourself to Cape Town, which is now possible nonstop on United from Newark Airport (EWR). Or, you can fly from the US with a layover in a spot like Johannesburg or London. Check for deals on flights into Cape Town here.

Once there, the Stellenbosch wine region is less than an hour’s drive away. We recommend renting a car , as it’s easy enough to do in a day trip, or you can spend the night there (or several) to ensure you get a chance to try all of the Stellenbosch winery experiences mentioned above. If you still haven’t settled on lodging, take a look at some of the best hotels in the Stellenbosch region here, but if we had to choose a great option as a base with vineyards on site, you should try this luxury vineyard hotel .

Wine Tours in Stellenbosch

As we’ve mentioned, it’s fairly easily visit any of the recommended wineries above in a self-guided fashion, but often, nothing compares to a local’s experience. Tour operators like Afrivista have been around for decades and our readers rave about them. If they happen to be booked (which is common), don’t fret. There are plenty of other guides that operate in the area offering wonderful half-day and full-day wine tasting experiences. Africa Select offers a full-day tour through 3 sub-regions, including local food and wine pairings and a ride on a wine tram.

If you’d prefer to avoid other people, schedule a private full-day trip with Elegant Country Tours , we highly recommend this group for each guide’s exceptional service and love for their country’s experiences. It’s customizable and hotel pickup/drop-off are included.

If you can only visit a few, make it these standout estates.

If you had a year at your disposal, sure, you could visit them all. But with limited time, you need to be selective.

Which are your favourite places for wine-tasting in Stellenbosch? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Bartinney Private Cellar

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Bartinney Private Cellar

Perched on the Botmaskop Mountain in the Banhoek Valley, this wine estate (in the Jordaan family since 1953) boasts awe-inspiring views. A pioneer in holistic, sustainable farming, Bartinney has been a WWF Biodiversity & Wine Champion since 2010 – which translates into a small selection of wines from an exceptional, fynbos-rich terroir, served in the modern, double-storey Tasting Shed or outside on two terraces. “This magic, mountainous estate lies tucked away in the Banhoek Valley,” explains Malu Lambert, award-winning wine writer and critic. “A beautiful design aesthetic further enchants, and they offer an interesting wine tasting with Cape fynbos.” Dan Nicholl, host of Dan Really Likes Wine , adds: “Serial entrepreneur Michael Jordaan’s farm has swiftly gathered a reputation for standout chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, best enjoyed on the deck of the tasting room overlooking the valley. And not just wine to attract visitors: there’s charming accommodation, and the Skyfall descent is one the finest single-track mountain-bike trails in Stellenbosch.” Cost R85 (3 wines) R110 (Wine & Fynbos Experience: 3 estate wines + farm-grown fynbos) R150 (Tempest Gin tasting) Platters: R250 (cheese), R300 (meat + cheese), R500 (gourmet) Good to know Bartinney is a cash-free farm; cards and Snapscan accepted. Delaire Graff

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Delaire Graff

Situated on the panoramic Helshoogte Pass, this estate and state-of-the-art winery is a magnificent package that ticks all the boxes. Acquired by international jeweller Laurence Graff in 2003, the vineyards had been planted by influential SA wine critic John Platter in the 1980s. There are three wine ranges (Premium, Luxury and Icon) and five tutored tasting options in the chic, art-filled Wine Lounge – or simply settle in on the terrace or beside the fireplace to enjoy a glass or bottle of wine with a platter. Dan says: “Even by Stellenbosch standards, the views are extraordinary, sweeping down the Banhoek Valley. There’s competition for the estate’s most impressive feature: a dazzling art collection, two acclaimed restaurants and the most luxurious accommodation in Stellenbosch. But don’t let all of that distract you from winemaker Morné Vrey’s cellar – try the Botmaskop red blend, a tribute to the peak that stands sentry over the estate.” Wayve Kolevsohn, group sommelier at The Royal Portfolio, adds: “Delaire has it all – top-quality wine, art, décor, views, beautiful gardens. It offers the crème de la crème of wine-tasting experiences. And there are two great dining options for lunch or dinner.” [Elevated bistro-style fare at Delaire Graff Restaurant or Afro-Asian fusion fine-dining at Indochine .] Cost R75 (3 wines), R100 (4 wines), R125 (5 wines) R280 (5 red wines) R300 (4 Icon wines), R350 (5 Icon wines) Platters: R465 (cheese and/or charcuterie or smoked salmon) R230 (olive) R145 (snack or sweet platter) Opening times Monday – Saturday, 10am – 5.30pm (last tasting at 5pm) Sunday, 10am – 5pm (last tasting at 4.30pm) Restaurant: Monday – Sunday, 12pm – 4pm (last seating 2pm) Wednesday – Saturday, 6pm – 11pm (last seating 8.15pm) Good to know Tables in the Wine Lounge are on a first-come, first-served basis. Delaire Graff’s spa, hotel and Indochine Restaurant are undergoing refurbishment until 15 October 2023; the Indochine Pop-Up 8-course menu is available in the Wine Lounge. Ernie Els Wines

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Ernie Els Wines

In one of the most coveted corners of the Winelands – the “Golden Triangle”, known for red wines – striking architecture and contemporary interiors create a sophisticated but warm modern “farmhouse” vibe – ideal for a laidback lunch in the country. There are four ranges – from easy-drinkers to more complex and exclusive wines – which can be tried at the Tasting Room. You can also pre-book a guided visit to the atmospheric fermentation cellar, and there’s a room filled with the golfing legend’s trophies and awards. “SA’s golfing icon chose the blend that makes up the Ernie Els Signature after much consultation with winemaker Louis Strydom, who oversees an estate with arresting views and wine to match,” explains Dan. “Lunch here on a summer’s day is hard to beat – and the chipping challenge off the restaurant terrace to the green in front of the vines adds a touch of fun.” Cost R95 (Player’s Tasting of 4 wines) R165 (Major Tasting of 4 wines) R110 (Flagship Tasting, curated seasonally to include exclusive vintage rarities) R95 (add the iconic Ernie Els Signature to any tasting) Platters: R235 (cheese), R285 (cheese + charcuterie) Opening times Monday – Sunday, 10am – 5pm (last tasting at 4pm) Restaurant: Wednesday – Sunday, 12pm – 3.30pm, Thursday – Saturday, 6.30pm – 9pm Good to know The winery is closed 17 – 26 July 2023; the restaurant is open for lunch and wine-tasting only (dinner service closed) until 31 August. Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Kanonkop

Named after a 17th-century cannon that fired to signal the arrival of ships in Table Bay, this Simonsberg wine estate has a pedigreed lineage of SA winemaking legends (the first vines were planted in the late 1930s; the first bottle under the Kanonkop label produced in 1973). No surprise Kanonkop was included in Drinks International’s list of the 50 most admired wine brands in the world for 2022. Yet it remains low-key: the Tasting Room doubles as something of a museum and gift shop. Private tutored tastings, held in the art gallery in the maturation cellar, can be booked on weekdays for groups of 10 to 20 people. “What I love about Kanonkop,” says Luvo Ntezo, head sommelier at One&Only Cape Town, “is its history with pinotage – it’s the iconic home of this wine; a home surrounded by the majestic Simonsberg Mountains. What a perfect setting for a proudly South African wine! You must try the Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage.” Wayve adds: “This is for the serious red wine lovers. Expect to taste reds that are in a quality league of the best in the world – their Paul Sauer red blend was the first South African wine to receive a 100-point rating from Tim Atkin. Despite its stature, this winery is still classically old-school Stellenbosch in many ways. If you visit on the right day, you may witness the cannon being fired.” Cost R100 (Complete Range tasting of 7 current vintages) R400 (Pinotage tasting of 6 wines) R180 (Black Label Pinotage 2020 per tasting) R70 (Kanonkop Pinotage 2013 per tasting) R600 (private Portfolio Tasting of 3 Kadette, 3 Estate, an older vintage + Black Label Pinotage) Good to know There is no restaurant or food offering. Opening times Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm Saturday, 9am – 3pm Public holidays, 10am – 4pm Contact 021 884 4656, [email protected] Where to find it R44, Koelenhof, Stellenbosch north Enquire Now

Ken Forrester Vineyards

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Ken Forrester Vineyards

Known for its sustainable farming ethos, Ken Forrester started producing wines here in 1994, on one of the oldest farms in the Cape (founded 1689). He has access to extensive old-vine stands, creating some superlative hand-crafted wines. There’s a relaxed, family vibe, with a Wine Lounge overlooking the Helderberg and deli items to take home (including his famous chenin steak rub). There are three ranges: easy-drinking Petit, old-vine Reserve and single-vineyard Icon, as well as more unusual limited-release cellar exclusives. “The king of chenin blanc is also a wonderful storyteller,” says Dan, “so bumping into Ken himself would make the day. But there’s more than enough fine wine to carry the visit. From the effervescent Sparklehorse chenin blanc cap classique to the dark and broody Renegade red blend, there’s attraction aplenty – and for an added treat, try Ken’s glorious wagyu biltong.” Malu adds: “Hello, chenin! Visit here for a charming tasting room, incredible wines (do taste The FMC in the Icon range!), and you may be lucky to see the namesake himself. Plus, just down the road is Forrester’s iconic restaurant, 96 Winery Road.” Cost R90 (Petit Range per tasting) R120 (Reserve Range per tasting) R150 (Chenin Blanc per tasting) R300 (Icon Range per tasting) Platter: R375 (cheeses, biltong + preserves, serves 3–4) Good to know The family-friendly restaurant has a small plates menu and kids playground; there are also mountain-biking trails and accommodation in the Country Guesthouse. Forrester has also been the official importer of Billecart-Salmon Champagne since 2001. Opening times Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm; Saturday, 10am – 4pm Restaurant: Monday – Saturday, 9am – 9pm; Sunday, 9am – 3pm Contact 021 855 2374, [email protected] Restaurant: 021 842 2020, [email protected] Where to find it Corner of Winery Road and R44, Raithby, Stellenbosch south Enquire Now

Rust en Vrede

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Rust en Vrede

With its national monument Cape Dutch buildings dating back to the 1700s, surrounded by manicured gardens dotted with rose bushes and towering oaks, with views over the vineyards, Rust en Vrede is an idyllic setting. The Tasting Room is in the cellar (for extra atmosphere, ask to sit in the barrel room) or settle in on the leafy deck and combine your wine-tasting with the superbly simple Winemaker’s Lunch. Informal guided tours of the underground cellar are available. “Fine wine, fine art, fine food. What’s not to like?” asks Malu. “What’s especially impressive is their focus, only estate cabernet sauvignon and syrah, which make it into various iterations, including a blend of the two, which is fairly unusual – and very successful.” Cost R120 (Estate tasting, 3 wines) R100 (Estate 2013 per tasting); R40 (Estate 2020 per tasting) R90 (Estate potstill brandy) Lunch: R350 Good to know The Winemakers lunch (no bookings) comprises steak or salmon with salad, chips or baby potatoes and a glass of perfectly paired wine. Do book for dinner at the fine-dining restaurant for one of the best tasting menus in town. Opening times Monday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm Sunday, 10am – 4pm Lunch: 12pm – 3pm Contact 021 881 3881, [email protected] Where to find it Annandale Road, Stellenbosch south

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Simonsig

The birthplace of SA bubbly, cap classique, and a co-founder of the Stellenbosch Wine Route back in 1971, Simonsig’s illustrious and pioneering history is being continued by the third generation of the Malan family. There is also a variety of reds and whites (in particular chenin) in the Malan Family Selection and Cultivar Range. Enjoy them in the elegant Tasting Room, which spills out onto a large verandah shaded by oak trees. “I have a longstanding relationship with Simonsig, having always been a fan of their vintages and their brut especially,” says Luvo. “My favourite is the Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2015. It’s also possibly one of the most beautiful wine farms in the country, a place for family, for friends and for celebrations. I have yet to see an unhappy person drinking a glass of Simonsig.” Cost R75 (Tasting of the Day selection) R75 (Sparkle with Simonsig) R75 (Meet the Family single varietals) R75 (Sugar, Spice & Everything Nice sweet wines) R150 (cellar tour with Tasting of the Day, Sparkle with Simonsig or Meet the Family tasting) R100 (The Blue Bloods premium selection) Platters: R205 (charcuterie); R225 (charcuterie and cheese) Winter soups: from R65 Good to know Take the Wine Whizz challenge (R85) – guess three or more cultivars in your tasting correctly and you get your tasting free (until 30 September 2023). Stark-Condé Wines

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Stark-Condé Wines

The tasting room offers a unique experience – even by Stellenbosch standards, where the competition is tough. In one of the most naturally beautiful locations in the Jonkershoek Valley, this celebrated estate is home to a “floating island” tasting room (worth a visit for that alone). The fully organic boutique estate has garnered a reputation for its hand-crafted wines, with an annual output of 8 000 bottles. “Like walking into a postcard,” says Malu, “hence its restaurant of the same name. The Field Blend (white varietals) and cabernet sauvignon are exceptional wines, made by one of the best young winemakers in the country, Rüdger van Wyk.” Dan adds: “The many awards Rüdger has won reflect an exceptional talent who has added some excellent white wine to the trademark cabernet. The idyllic setting of the tasting room, on a tiny island on the dam beneath the Jonkershoek mountains, will be almost as memorable as the wine.” Cost R110 (5 Classic Estate wines of your choice) R155 (3 High Altitude premium reds) R195 (5 Best of Estate – 2 whites + 3 reds) Good to know The Postcard Cafe is a lovely, family-friendly spot for breakfast, brunch, lunch or afternoon tea treats. Tokara Wine & Olive Estate

stellenbosch wine farms to visit

On the slopes of the Simonsberg, home to exceptional vineyards since the 17th century, Tokara has a prime position on the Helshoogte Pass. Surrounded by striking artworks, the Tasting Lounge overlooks vines, olive trees and mountains, providing a beautiful backdrop. The focus is on sauvignons, but other varieties also feature in three collections (Premium, single-vineyard Reserve and flagship Director’s Reserve), plus cap classique and a potstill brandy. The restaurant is also worth a visit, or there’s the deli for a more casual option (with a fab treehouse-inspired kids’ playground). “For an estate in the heart of red wine country (look out for the Telos if you’re feeling flush), winemaker Stuart Botha has received plenty of recognition for his white wine in recent years,” explains Dan. “But the wine is only one of the drawcards: towering views, a striking art collection and some of the best olive oil in the Winelands are also strong attractions.” Wayve agrees: “Not to be missed. These wines are consistent vintage after vintage, and every single one is top quality. My standouts are the Directors Reserve white and red blends, but a close second is the chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon. Tokara’s wine cellar, production facility and tasting room is an architectural masterpiece – one could visit just for the views.” Cost R100 (Flagship tasting) R100 (Limited Release tasting) R120 (Reserve tasting) Cheeseboard: R185 Olive oil tasting: R65 Good to know Do take some time for a stroll – the Sculpture Garden is stunning, and there are two short walkways from the deli (one leading to a secret ‘selfie deck’). Opening times Daily, 10am – 6pm (last tasting at 5.30pm) Restaurant: Wednesday – Sunday, 12pm – 3pm, 6pm – 9pm (not Sunday) Deli: Tuesday – Sunday, 9am – 5pm (last seating 3.30pm) Contact 021 808 5900, [email protected] Restaurant: 021 885 2550, [email protected] Where to find it Helshoogte Road (R310), Stellenbosch east Enquire Now

Villiera Wines

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting: Villiera Wines

Synonymous with fine SA bubbly (the Grier family produced their first cap classique in 1984), Villiera also makes great red and white wines – including the limited-edition Reserve range. The tasting room, The Wine Sanctuary, features comfy leather chairs and sofas, a fireplace, and opens onto an oak-shaded terrace, and visitors are welcome to do a self-guided cellar tour. Focused on sustainable farming and conservation, what makes this wine farm somewhat unique is the adjoining wildlife sanctuary (home to zebras, giraffes and a variety of antelope), where over 100 000 indigenous trees have been planted. “Being one of the closer farms to Cape Town, it’s the perfect start to a Stellenbosch wine experience,” says Dan. “The tasting room offers some of the best cap classiques being produced in South Africa – from the non-vintage brut and brut rosé to the vintage Monro Brut 2015. There are also top-notch red and white wines as well as the fantastic Domaine Grier range of wines made in Roussillon in southern France.” Malu adds: “Not only do you get to sample their exquisite wines – the bubbly in particular – but they have a wildlife sanctuary and offer game drives.” Cost R90 (6 cap classiques) R80 (6 red or white still wines) R80 (Wines of the Week, 2 bubblies, 2 whites, 2 reds) R20 – R40 (Reserve wines per tasting) R150 (cap classique + nougat pairing) Good to know Booking is essential for the game drives – R300 per adult, including a complimentary wine tasting; R150 for children under 15 years. Rust en Vrede Wine Estate

If you’re looking for a taste of “Rest and Peace,” look no further than Rust en Vrede , a historic winery at the foot of the majestic Helderberg Mountain in South Africa. With a name that translates to “Rest and Peace” in Dutch, Rust en Vrede’s story dates back to 1694 when Willem Adrian van der Stel, the Governor of the Cape, established the estate.

However, Jannie and Ellen Engelbrecht acquired Rust en Vrede in 1977 and embarked on a journey to restore its former glory. The first order of business for the Engelbrechts was to restore and equip the original winery.

With meticulous care and attention to detail, the couple completed the restoration, and in 1978, Rust en Vrede produced its first vintage of the modern era. The vineyards were replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot, carefully chosen to thrive in the unique terroir.

Nestled between 85 and 130 meters above sea level, Rust en Vrede enjoys a microclimate ideal for cultivating red grape varieties. Protected from the south-easterly wind by the Helderberg and Stellenbosch mountains and shielded from the south-westerly wind by the foothills of the Helderberg, Rust en Vrede’s vineyards bask in a warmer growing environment.

This microcosm creates the perfect conditions for producing full-bodied wines with a powerful structure and exceptional aging potential. In 2000, Rust en Vrede became the first South African red wine named in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of the World , a feat they repeated for four consecutive years.

They were also named again in 2012, earning this distinction for a fifth time. The hallmarks of Rust en Vrede’s wines are complexity and balance, a testament to the winery’s unwavering commitment to crafting remarkable wines from their exceptional estate.

When you visit Rust en Vrede, you can experience their range of wines at their welcoming tasting room, which is open seven days a week. Knowledgeable and friendly staff guide you through tastings, and informal underground cellar tours are available upon request.

For a truly special experience, indulge in Rust en Vrede’s renowned Winemaker’s lunch, featuring a simple set menu of either steak or salmon paired with a glass of their exquisite wines.

Set against the backdrop of towering oaks and manicured gardens, Rust en Vrede offers the perfect setting for a delightful afternoon in the Winelands.

Discover the serenity of Rust en Vrede, where history, passion, and exceptional wines converge to create an unforgettable experience.

Best time to visit the Cape Winelands

Cape winelands

February to May are the best months for sipping in the Cape Winelands.

The grapes are the ripest for picking in February and March during the beginning of the autumn harvest.

During this time there are many wine festivals going on to celebrate one of the world’s greatest wine regions, and the weather is sunny and warm, but not too hot.

Since this is the most popular time to visit, avoid crowds by starting earlier in the morning and planning your trip on a weekday.

Psst! You’ll find our guide to the best time to visit South Africa helpful to get the full breakdown on what makes each season distinct and unique to help cater to your trip.

How to get to the Cape Winelands

Cape winelands

Just east of Cape Town, the gateway to the Cape Winelands region is easy to access using a variety of different transport options.

With your own rental car, there are two main roads you can take from Cape Town to get to the Winelands: N1 and N2 .

Each route takes about the same amount of time to get to Stellenbosch, then you can access any of the smaller towns from there.

Although a rental is a great way to access many of the best wine farms in Stellenbosch and the rest of the winelands, don’t drink and drive!

We highly recommend using Discover Cars to find rental cars in South Africa. You can compare prices across the top, reputable rental companies all at once to get the best price possible.

Note: I’ve personally found some of the best deals on Discover Cars in Cape Town that saved me a lot of money when compared with rates from other companies.

Ubers can be a great option for getting from Cape Town to the Winelands.

You can expect to pay around 450 Rand ($25 USD) to get to Stellenbosch, or more if you plan on visiting more than one winery.

If you’re splitting the ride with others this can be very affordable, but it comes with a few caveats:

 • From Cape Town, it’s a long ride to the winelands and a lot of the Ubers do not have AC.
 • If you’re planning on staying late in the winelands, you risk waiting awhile to get an Uber back into the city.

Hire a driver and shuttle

If you’re planning on getting boozy at more than one winery, hiring a driver or shuttle gives immense peace of mind at very reasonable prices.

Reveler Tours has a variety of different sized vans and rates, making it a nice option even if you’re traveling solo or with a larger group.

You can contact them by sending an inquiry online or messaging them on Whatsapp with the number of travelers and what wine experience you’re looking for.

Best wine tours in the Cape Winelands

Joining a tour is an excellent way to explore multiple wineries for a boozy day trip. We recommend these tours that include transport to and from Cape Town.

If you are planning a romantic vacation , a trip to Kruger National Park , a girl’s getaway, or even a solo trip to South Africa now is the time to discover the best Stellenbosch wineries.

If you take a day trip about an hour outside of Cape Town and you’ll find yourself immersed in South Africa’s wine country.

While South Africa is known for its safaris in Kruger National Park, its exotic wildlife, some of the best cuisine, Michelin Star Restaurants, and stunning landscapes let’s not forget about the breathtaking Stellenbosch vineyards.

Stellenbosch is a cozy university town and the center of the wine region. White Cape homes, ancient trees, cozy restaurants, and cafés make Stellenbosch the perfect place to store your tent for a few days.

South Africa is also known for producing some of the best wines in the world because South Africa has the perfect climate for producing some of the tastiest wines in the world.

Pinotage is South Africa’s signature grape variety. It is grown almost exclusively there, making everything from low-quality table wines to rich, concentrated wines with flavors of black and red fruits, spice, leather, and chocolate

Pinotage is a grape crossing of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir. It was first crossed in South Africa in 1925 in the gardens of scientist Abraham Perold.

Perold observed how Pinot Noir struggled in South Africa’s climate, so he crossed them with a very productive species: Cinsaut (called Hermitage ). Perold’s goal was to create a wine that was as delicious as Pinot Noir but grew as well as Cinsaut.

It is easy to assume they taste alike. Not true. In fact, the South African grape looks and tastes more like Shiraz even though Pinotage is technically related to Pinot Noir

There are some excellent wine tastings in Stellenbosch that will also allow you to taste a full-bodied cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir; the lighter Chenin Blancs and chardonnays; and unique varietals like pinotage and M éthode Cap Classique (South Africa’s version of Champagne).

I will provide you with a list of the very best wine farms in Stellenbosch where you can enjoy not only the wine but the stunning views and delicious cuisine as well.

The Stellenboch wine farms offer powerful and bold, yet sweet with amazing drinkability, and freshness with a hint of oak flavors.

Keep reading for my top wineries that you definitely should try if you are visiting Cape Town, South Africa:

Boschendal (Dutch for bush and dale) is one of the oldest Wine Estates in South Africa and is located between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch in South Africa’s Western Cape. Boschendal is by far my favorite Stellenbosch wine farm.

This Iconic wine farm is nestled in one of the most picturesque valleys in the Cape Winelands. With a winemaking tradition spanning over 330 years, Boschendal Wine Estate offers a veritable treat for wine lovers everywhere.

Boschendal Farm provides luxury boutique accommodation on one of the oldest farms in South Africa’s Cape Winelands. The estate is situated close to Franschhoek and Stellenbosch and its delightful cottages are the perfect base from which to explore the area.

2. Stark-Conde

Stark-Condé is a family-run winery making handcrafted wines using tried and true traditional methods. The family property in the Jonkershoek Valley is 600 acres with 85 acres under vine.

This boutique winery is picturesquely nestled in the Jonkershoek Valley, just 3 kilometers outside town in Stellenbosch.

The setting is simply overwhelmingly beautiful – hence, the name of the Postcard Cafe.

What was intended to attract more feet to the tasting room; a little cafe linked to the winery has now become the winery linked to the Cafe instead.

The winery is intensively family-run; a German father, Japanese-German daughter, and Cuban-American husband co-own the winery with their two daughters working weekends to help in the fully booked cafe

In addition to being viticulturally ideal, the estate is visually spectacular and attracts visitors from afar. Meticulous viticulture, selected harvesting, hand grape- sorting, small-batch fermentation, patient barrel maturation — these are the guiding philosophies behind the wines.

Jonkershoek Valley is a pristine valley uniquely situated for growing Cabernet. With its high elevation terrain, ample winter rainfalls, and the cleansing Southeaster breeze that blows through the valley, this area has perfect conditions for the production of premium grapes. The Stark-Condé vineyards are farmed organically and 80% of the estate remains rugged virgin terrain. The flora mirrors the rich biodiversity of the neighboring Jonkershoek National Park, which has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site for its fynbos biome.

Winemaking is kept as simple and natural as possible. The pressed juice is fermented with natural yeasts in open-top tanks, with manual punchdowns around the clock. The red wines are then aged up to 22 months in French oak barrels and are bottled in most instances without fining or filtration. With a limited production of just over 8000 cases, Stark-Condé remains committed to producing hand-crafted premium wines.

3. Waterford Estate

Waterford Estate is situated in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley, in the world-renowned Stellenbosch region.

They believe in the old adage of ‘less is more’. There is nothing pretentious or ostentatious about the estate, rather the visual impact is one of a seamless whole, which complements rather than detracts from the surrounding natural beauty.

The Waterford Estate winery offers a relaxing setting where guests can sit and enjoy various tasting options.

With the wine cellar built surrounding the courtyard, you can observe the workings of the winery, and get a true feel for the wine-making process without disrupting the tranquillity of your tasting experience.

In addition to the cellar door experiences, they also offer two vineyard experiences, the Wine Drive Safari and Porcupine Trail Walk.

At Waterford Estate, they tap into all of your senses – sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste, in order for you to experience both what is inside and outside the bottle.

4. Gabriëlskloof Winery

The vision at Gabriëlskloof is to produce fine wines that reflect the complexity, richness, and diversity of our unique terroir. They strive to do this in the most environmentally friendly way possible, showing respect for the region’s biodiversity at all times.

As you’re heading out of the confines of the city and inland to explore the Overberg or Garden Route, be sure to stop at the impressive Gabriëlskloof, (6 miles) outside Bot Rivier on the right as you’re driving up the N2.

Try the Decanter award-winning Gabriëlskloof Shiraz 2010 and Five Archers 2009.

You can taste the estate wines in front of a log fire in the tasting room or in the garden. You can also sample the estate’s extra virgin olive oil, and olive products can be purchased from the deli.

The Gabriëlskloof restaurant is a great place to stop for lunch if you’re in the area.

The menu changes regularly, but the food is always no-fuss homecooked fare made with fresh local Overberg farm produce.

If you visit Gabriëlskloof in December, aim for the weekend they host an evening market with 30 local produce and crafts stalls.

The Gabriëlskloof Range wines focus on the estate vineyards and are accessible on release, the Landscape Series showcases their top vineyard sites along with some of South Africa’s best old vines while the Projects Range allows us space to experiment with alternative fermentation and aging methods.

Reyneke is a 90-acre farm on the ridge of the Polkadraai Hills, with spectacular views of Stellenbosch. Reyneke was the first farm in South Africa to achieve certification by Demeter International, the largest, and arguably, the most widely acknowledged biodynamic accreditation body in the world.

Reyneke is part of the Vinimark group, and winemaking is overseen by Rudiger Gretschel. ‘A good fermentation and a clean malolactic fermentation are crucial to making good wine,’ says Rudiger.

He uses only natural fermentations, with no enzymes, but does add some vitamins/nutrients to help the yeasts. The fermentations all take place in older casks.

6. Delaire Graff Estates

The Delaire Graff Estate is quite simply one of the most luxurious and indulgent wine tourism experiences to be found anywhere in South African wine country.

The ten luxury lodges are the epitome of elegance, with private terraces and your own personal heated plunge pool providing the ultimate spot to gaze across the mesmerizing landscape.

There are two restaurants and private in-room dining available, and even a diamond salon for guests who are looking to splash out!

However, don’t forget to schedule a visit to the estate’s working winery in amongst all this pampering. True to form, tastings take place in the opulent Wine Lounge, a marvel of design that houses some of the estate’s art collection.

Luckily, the wines are just as beautiful as the setting, and there’s no wine-tasting experience in South Africa more likely to make you feel like a million dollars.

Delaire Graff Estates wine tastings in Stellenbosch are everything you didn’t know you needed.

7. Spier Wine Farm

The Spier Wine Farm is one of Stellenbosch’s oldest working wineries, with a heritage dating back to 1692 – however, this winery is anything but tired, and it’s impossible not to fall in love with the boundless energy that greets you.

As well as wine, the owners are passionate art lovers and the winery is home to one of the largest collections of contemporary South African art in the world.

The best wineries in Stellenbosch have something for every guest and Spier Wine Farm is no exception!

Whether it’s a breezy Segway tour through the vines, a tasting of some of the most awarded wines in South Africa, or an unbelievable Eagle Encounter with the many birds of prey who have found sanctuary at Spier, Spier Wine Farm covers it all.

At the end of the day, put your feet up and enjoy that famous South African hospitality in the estate’s four-star hotel, which boasts multiple swimming pools, a Kid’s Club, and a spa.

8. Dornier’s Wine Estate

Dornier Wine Estate lies in the foothills of the Stellenbosch Mountains and uses the unique granite terroir in this dramatic spot to produce a wonderful portfolio of elegant wines which often tend towards the experimental (make sure you try the unusual Cocoa Hill Rosé, made from the Merlot grape!)

Wine holidays here mean guests can wine, dine and stay in luxury in this most scenic of locations; check into one of the estate’s nine beautiful self-catering cottages and stroll across to the modern wine-tasting center to enjoy panoramic views of the mountains as you enjoy your wine tasting!

End the evening with a slap-up meal of fresh local produce at the on-site Bodega Restaurant to complete your dream stay at Dornier.

9. Waterford Estate

The Waterford Estate is situated in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley, and the owners have chosen to use only half of their 120-hectare estate for viticulture in order to preserve the wonderful natural ecosystems of the estate.

Waterford is well known for its delectable Wine and Chocolate pairing experience, which can be enjoyed in the courtyard in full view of the scenic Stellenbosch Mountains.

The tranquil atmosphere and wide selection of wine tours and experiences (including a Wine Safari!) alongside award-winning wines make a visit to Waterford an unmissable stop on your South African wine tour.

10. Tokara Vineyard

 • Tokara Premium Collection (a fusion of various sites),
 • Tokara Reserve Collection (picked from a single vineyard), and
 • Tokara Directors Reserve (the very best and most expressive parcels used to create iconic blends that define our flagship wines).

Are Wine Tastings in Stellenbosch Safe?

Is Cape Town safe for tourists to visit in 2023? Yes! Like any major city in the United States, Cape Town has crime. But, if you follow my simple rules chances are you will find that South Africa is safe but specifically Cape Town is as safe as most popular tourist destinations.

Cape Town, the second-largest city in South Africa and the capital of the Western Cape Province, is a very important city: it is the legislative capital of South Africa, containing the Houses of Parliament.

It is located in the southwest corner of the country near the Cape of Good Hope and is the most southern city in Africa.

Though some may think of typical stereotypes when hearing the words “South Africa”, Cape Town is completely different than people imagine.

Cape Town is a busy city. Like many world cities and popular holiday destinations, there are safe areas for tourists and then there are areas that tourists should avoid but Stellenbosch is not an area you have to worry about so drink up!

Did any of my favorite Stellenbosch wineries make your bucket list for Spring 2023?

As you stroll through the "village of the oaks," your enthusiastic guide shares fascinating stories and insights into one of South Africa’s key historic urban centers. Guides also freely dispense insider advice on the best not-to-be-missed eateries, local shops and picturesque streets during the pleasant promenade. Art-focused walking tours (Stellenbosch is one of the country’s premier art centers and has stunning displays peppered throughout) are also available.

Kayamandi Township Tour

Discover a different side to Stellenbosch as you explore Kayamandi, the second oldest township in the country. The walking tour of Kayamandi, which means "nice home" in Xhosa, is done with a local guide and provides guests with a unique insight into the area’s complex and dynamic history and culture. Highlights include street art, the chance to meet local entrepreneurs and sampling traditional foods. Also considering signing up for the Djembe drumming session.

It may be worth hiring a professional driver to navigate South Africa's most celebrated wine region.

Oswald Tours

When visiting the winelands, it’s important to keep in mind that there is no viable public transportation and renting a car can be difficult for those who want to go on several wine tastings and are not used to driving on the left side of the road. That where Oswald Tours comes in. The company offers affordable and reliable personalized chauffeur services, ensuring that you can enjoy your wine tastings and explore the region in comfort. Their knowledgeable, friendly drivers (like Francois) are equally as skilled at driving safely as they are at providing insightful and engaging commentary about the wine region’s' rich history and culture. The company also offer airport pickups, as well as a variety of pre-set tours like Cape Town and whale watching.

stellenbosch wine farms to visit

From vineyard to community: Exploring Spier Wine Farm's commitment to sustainability, empowerment

N estled in the heart of the Stellenbosch wine region, just out of Cape Town, Spier Wine Farm isn't just known for its fine wines but also for its commitment to sustainability and community empowerment. My recent visit to Spier offered me a look into their 'Growing for Good' initiatives. The programme is designed to nurture the land and foster a vibrant community through a series of innovative and impactful projects.

Spier Wine Farm is one of South Africa's oldest wine farms, dating back to 1692, and features a rich cultural and architectural heritage.

A hands-on approach to sustainability

One of the highlights of my experience was engaging in a range of 'Growing for Good' activities, each tailored to promote environmental sustainability and community well-being.

In the Food Garden, under the guidance of Spier Wine Farm's agroecologist Megan McCarthy, I participated in Self-Harvesting, where the use of regenerative techniques to cultivate a variety of fruits, herbs, and vegetables was demonstrated. "This hands-on approach not only connects people with the source of their food," McCarthy explained, "but also educates them on the benefits of sustainable agriculture."

The Segway Tour was an exciting way to explore the extensive property. Gliding through the indigenous River Garden and past the eco-friendly wastewater recycling plant, I gained insights into how Spier integrates ecological conservation into its everyday operations, ensuring that every aspect of the farm contributes to a greener planet.

Empowering entrepreneurs

One of the cornerstones of the 'Growing for Good' initiative is its emphasis on entrepreneurship. Spier transforms its employees and local residents into business owners, providing support from the inception to the operation of their ventures.

The Enterprise Development session opened my eyes to how Spier supports local entrepreneurs. From providing mentorship and financial support to offering equipment and facilities, Spier helps launch and sustain small businesses that are vital to the local economy. During this session, I learned about several success stories, such as Klein Begin, a laundry service, and Primo Vino, which creatively repackages Spier wines for different markets.

I also met Merecia Smith, a former Spier employee who has launched WAS Laboratory, the Western Cape's first black-owned wine analysis laboratory. Spier supports WAS Laboratory by providing accounting and administrative services, allowing Smith to focus on her lab work.

Furthermore, I was especially impressed by the story of Noviwe “Sweetness” Lubisi, who started as a cleaner and rose through the ranks to manage the Spier staff restaurant, now an independent venture that caters to a large daily workforce. "Starting at Spier as a cleaner and progressing to managing my own restaurant has been an incredible journey of growth and learning. The support and opportunities provided here have empowered me to take ownership of my future and contribute meaningfully to our community."

Finally, the Picnic Lunch was an opportunity to taste the fresh produce directly from the garden. Settling down on a blanket, surrounded by the beauty of the farm, the meal featured the freshest produce directly from the garden I had just visited, beautifully showcasing the cycle of growth and sustainability.

Initiatives enriching the community

Beyond the activities I participated in, Spier hosts various other programmes aimed at sustainable and community-focused development. The Living Soils Community Learning Farm and the Spier Nursery are pivotal in teaching sustainable farming and plant growth techniques, crucial for environmental stewardship.

Launched in March 2019, the Living Soils Community Learning Farm, a collaborative effort by Woolworths, Spier, and the Sustainability Institute, has marked three years of progress in food production, skills development for young farmers, and enhancing community food security.

In this period, the project cultivated over 1.2 hectares, producing 15.9 tonnes of vegetables and advancing its mission to empower unemployed youth and women in agriculture. Training programmes have uplifted interns to managerial roles and contributed to local food supply chains, ensuring children and vulnerable communities receive nutritious meals.

The Regenerative Farm Tour offers an up-close look at holistic farming practices that maintain healthy soil and ecosystems. Meanwhile, the Water Sustainability Tour showcases how Spier's innovative water management practices minimise its environmental footprint by recycling and reusing wastewater.

Furthermore, cultural integration is evident in Spier’s sustainability efforts through initiatives like the Light Art Exhibition, which uses the farm as a canvas to display thought-provoking installations that highlight the intersection of art, nature, and technology.

Spier Wine Farm’s 'Growing for Good' initiatives go beyond corporate responsibility; they also represent a business philosophy that nurtures the land, empowers people, and builds a sustainable future. My visit not only provided me with a deeper appreciation of the impact of these programmes but also left me inspired by the potential of responsible business practices to drive real change.

Through their diverse range of activities, Spier is an example of how businesses can integrate sustainability into their core operations while fostering economic growth and community development. It’s a model that other enterprises would do well to follow, proving that growth can do, and be good.
