Columbus Shopping Guide: 50+ Stores for Fashion, Plants, Home Goods and More

Even in the age of amazon, local shopping is thriving. here are some of central ohio’s most distinctive brick-and-mortar stores..

Flower Child Vintage in Italian Village

Local shopping is alive and well. Even as Amazon and other online behemoths attract more of our money, a quiet brick-and-mortar renaissance is occurring. Small, distinctive shops are thriving all over Central Ohio, offering unique wares, in charming settings, curated by passionate experts. While consumers might love the ease and practicality of online shopping, they also want to spend their dollars closer to home.

A recent survey from WD Partners bears this out. When the Dublin retail consultant asked about 2,500 people across the U.S. late last year whether they intended to shop more locally, 88 percent said they did. What’s more, 57 percent said they wanted to spend their money at locally owned shops, as opposed to national brands with nearby outposts. “Local is bigger than ever,” says Lee Peterson, executive vice president for WD Partners. What’s driving the trend? Online shopping is pragmatic, efficient—and that has its appeal, as the pandemic showed. But local shopping, at its best, is joyful, surprising. When you visit a great local store, you might interact with its owner, learn something new, crack up at a witty display or even find a community of like-minded souls—stuff that doesn’t happen on Amazon, in other words. “It’s the emotional factor versus the functional factor,” Peterson says.

In the following stories,  Columbus Monthly  dives into Central Ohio’s dynamic local shopping scene, highlighting more than 50 brick-and-mortar stores worth visiting. Our guide offers can’t-miss picks for fashion, plants, books, home furnishings and more. Enjoy the local love.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery

Having started out as the private art collection of the Tretyakov brothers, there are now over 130,000 exhibits. Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

6. Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoye

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

Luke Combs collabs with Miller Lite beer to bring new merch, a sweepstakes and more

store in tour

Luke Combs and Miller Lite have announced a concert tour collaboration together, renewing Combs' partnership for another North American tour with the beer by his side.

The two have collaborated on a concert sweepstakes, custom merch and a new Combs themed beer can.

Combs posted a picture from the "fine pilsner" brewery in Milwaukee, WI on Tuesday wearing a safety vest and hard hat in front of a wall of beer cans.

The caption said, "Really appreciate the folks at  @millerlite  showing me around their brewery and letting me get an up close look at how my beer cans are made from start to finish."

Here's everything we know so far about the 2024 collab.

What is the Luke Combs and Miller Lite concert sweepstakes?

Luke Combs is hitting the road for his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" 2024 tour in North America. He kicked off the tour on April 13 in Milwaukee, WI, where he toured the Miller Lite brewery.

The tour will continue with two stadium dates in 13 cities. The tour includes guests Cody Jinks, The Avett Brothers, Charles Wesley Godwin, Hailey Whitters, The Wilder Blue, Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny, Drew Parker and Colby Acuff.

On Miller Lite's website , fans can enter their information for a chance to win a trip to see Combs in concert on the tour.

Miller Lite's website says, "Continue below to enter for your chance to win a trip to see Luke Combs play live and other prizes from your friends at Miller Lite. Now you know why ice-cold beer never broke Luke’s heart."

The sweepstakes began on March 3 and will end on Sept. 30.

What do the new Luke Combs Miller Lite beer cans look like?

Combs' Instagram post shows his custom 16-oz Miller Lite can, which features a guitar headstock with American traditional tattoo-like text that says "Beer Never Broke My Heart," a nod to Comb's 2019 song.

The front of the can includes Combs' name under the traditional logo.

Miller Lite on Instagram: "Luke Combs is back on tour. To celebrate, we're dropping the new Miller Lite x Luke Combs Tour Trucker hat on 4/17, restocking daily until 4/20. Get yours while they last."

When did Luke Combs begin his partnership with Miller Lite?

In 2022, Combs partnered with Miller Lite, releasing his first limited edition custom can with the brand.

"Last year’s limited-edition Luke Combs cans did really well for us," Jamie Rubinstein, associate marketing manager for Miller Lite, told Beer & Beyond .

"Plus, we got great feedback that they worked well with our Americana displays, so we’re looking forward to seeing how this year’s cans come to life at retail this summer."

When will we see the 2024 Luke Combs Miller Lite cans in stores?

It is unclear when the new cans will be available for purchase in stores.

Fans speculate the cans will be available at Combs' upcoming arena tour stops.

What other Luke Combs and Miller Lite merch is there?

Combs and Molson Coors have collaborated to release the Miller Lite x Luke Combs Tour Trucker, a special edition hat. The hat features Combs' signature vintage style and is also a potential ticket to one of his shows.

Starting on April 17, Miller Lite began selling a limited number of the hats at their merch store online. On April 18, 19 and 20 a limited number of hats will be sold at 8 a.m. CST.

Each hat purchased is also an automatic entry in a sweepstakes contest, entering fans in a contest to see Combs at a summer show of their choosing.

“He’s the most genuine brand fan we could have asked for, and we’re excited to share his love for Miller Lite with consumers this summer,” Rubenstein said to Beer & Beyond.

“If you’re a fan of Luke Combs, you’re probably a fan of Miller Lite. It’s a match made in heaven.”

The Guinness Storehouse In Dublin: The Tours, History + What To Expect

A visit to the Guinness Storehouse is one of the most popular things to do in Dublin and it’s the most-visited of the many paid tourist attractions in Ireland .

Located at St James’s Gate, the Guinness Factory sits on the site where Arthur Guinness set up shop with a 9,000-year lease in 1759.

There are several different Guinness Brewery tours to head off on, and we’ll take you through the best of the bunch in this guide.

You’ll also get some handy visitor info (e.g. try and visit late afternoon!) along with the history of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin and more. Dive on in!

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows before you visit the Guinness Storehouse

Although the Guinness tour is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

The Guinness factory is located slightly off Dublin’s south quays here . It’s a 15-minute walk from St. Patrick’s Cathedral , a 20-minute walk from Kilmainham Gaol and  very  short walk from some of the best whiskey distilleries in Dublin .

2. Book online to avoid the queues

So, you can just rock up and buy tickets for the Guinness tour on the day, but you’ll likely have to queue (the queues here are often very long). So, it’s worth buying your Guinness tour tickets online in advance. More on this below.

3. Opening Hours

The Guinness factory opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10 am-5 pm, Saturday, 9:30 am-6 pm, and Sundays from 9:30 am to 5 pm. If you book your Guinness tour tickets online, you’ll need to pick a specific time.

So, there’s some very limited free parking at the Guinness Storehouse on Crane Street, ( see it here  on Google Maps). There’s paid parking near the Four Courts here (15-minute walk away).

5. Part of the Dublin Pass

Exploring Dublin over 1 or 2 days? If you buy a Dublin Pass for €70 you can save from €23.50 to €62.50 on Dublin’s top attractions, like the EPIC Museum, the Guinness Storehouse, The GPO, the Jameson Distillery Bow St. and more (info here ).

The History of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin

guinness history

Photos in the Public Domain

When you visit the Guinness Brewery in Dublin, you’re treading on hallowed ground! It was the original site where Arthur Guinness began his brewery business in 1759.

Planning for the future, he signed a 9,000-year lease at £45 per annum and started brewing his dark porter-style ales. He used dark malt to create his stout, which was instantly a favourite with river and street porters, among other local workers.

Then things escalated

Ten years later, he decided to begin exporting, shipping a modest 6.5 barrels to England, and the rest, as they say, is history. By 1886, Guinness sales reached 1.13 million barrels a year, and the company was floated on the stock market.

That was in spite of the fact that Guinness owned no bars or pubs and refused to advertise (this changed drastically over time). The product spoke for itself.

The decline and joining up with Diageo

In the 1970s, Guinness sales had declined, so the owners had to relaunch it and introduce pale malt. The company merged with Diageo in 1997 but retained the Guinness brand’s rights and trademarked the Irish harp logo.

Now, in early-2024, Guinness is a roaring success both at home and overseas. However, not all pints are equal – see our guide to finding the best Guinness in Dublin for more.

The different Guinness Storehouse tours

As I mentioned before, we’ve done the Guinness Storehouse tour several times over the years. They come in the guided (during ‘normal’ times) and self-guided form.

Having done both, I can’t recommend the guided tour of the Guinness Storehouse enough. The tour guides are brilliant, and you’ll just have a more enjoyable experience.

1. Guinness Storehouse Experience (€30)

This is arguably the most popular Guinness Factory tour, as it involves polishing off your visit with a pint in the Gravity Bar.

This self-guided tour (affiliate link) costs €30 and it should take you around 1.5 hours from start to finish, depending on how long you linger. Here’s what it involves:

  • A Guinness (18 +) or a soft drink in the Gravity Bar
  • You get to ramble around the Guinness Brewery
  • Experience Canvas D8; a summer programme of culture and art
  • A guaranteed timed entrance

2. Guinness Storehouse Experience + Guinness Academy (€38)

This tour includes everything in the storehouse experience, with the one incredible addition of learning how to pour your own pint in the Guinness Academy.

This version of the Guinness Factory tour costs €38 and, with the addition of the Guinness Academy, is pretty similar to the first tour. It includes:

  • Tuition in the Guinness Academy where you will learn to pour a pint

3. The Jameson + Guinness tour combo (€97)

Now, the final tour (affiliate link) will suit those of you that plan on also visiting the Jameson Distillery on Bow St .

This is a combo, skip-the-line ticket that includes both attractions. It starts around €97 , and it includes the best of both tours. Here’s what you get:

  • Timed skip-the-line entrance to the Jameson Distillery
  • Timed skip-the-line entrance to the Guinness Storehouse tour
  • 2 drinks (pint of Guinness + 1 Jameson)
  • Photo stop outside the Brazen Head (the oldest pub in Dublin)

You’ll often see the Guinness Factory mentioned in guides to the best museums in Dublin . This puzzles some, but it is a museum of sorts.

The Storehouse is home to fixtures from the Guinness Brewery’s original days. Interestingly enough, some of these are from over 250 years ago.

3. Old-school Guinness ads

Immerse yourself in 80 years of Guinness advertising – you’ll be surprised at some of the memories it brings back! Interact with the ads and take selfies that put you in your very own Guinness ad.

4. The journey to greatness

Things to do at the Guinness Factory in Dublin

Tour aside, there are plenty of other things to do at the Guinness Storehouse that’ll make your visit an enjoyable one.

From tasting and learning to your face on a pint (yes, your face  on  a pint) and more, there’s a little bit of something to tickle every fancy.

1. The Tasting Experience

Moseying around the Guinness Storehouse and learning lots of interesting facts about this Irish brew is thirsty work. The Tasting Experience is a hands-on multi-sensory journey introducing visitors to this unique stout.

Pause and smell the aromas emanating from the creamy head (just like wine tasting, really!) and then sip the velvety smooth brew. Deeeeee-licious!

2. The Guinness Academy

There’s a definite art to pouring the perfect pint, and the Guinness Academy is the place to learn it for yourself.

Get behind the bar and follow instructions from the Beer Specialist on hand, who will give you some useful tips. You’ll be able to tell a bad pint of Guinness from a good one from then on!

3. The STOUTie

the stoutie

Within the STOUTie Room walls, guests can purchase a second glass of Guinness and see their own Selfie smiling up from the creamy head.

It’s a unique moment combining the latest technology with a little extra malt extract for a picture-perfect pint!

4. Enjoy a Pint at the Gravity Bar

The Gravity Bar is one of the most unique rooftop bars in Dublin and it’s the perfect place to linger over a pint or try one of the experimental brews.

The panoramic views through the wall of glass add to this unforgettable experience. You can also see a specially commissioned artwork by Irish street artist, Aches.

Places to visit nearby after the Guinness Factory tour

One of the beauties of the Guinness tour is that, when you’re finished, you’re a short distance away from some of the best places to visit in Dublin .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the Guinness Storehouse (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Whiskey distilleries (3 to 6-minute walk)

roe and co distillery

If the Guinness tour has you thirsty for more alcohol activities, you’re in luck – some of the top whiskey distilleries in Ireland are a short walk away. Roe and Co (6-minute walk), Pearse Lyons (5-minute walk) and the Teeling distillery (15-minute walk) are all nearby.

2. Dublin’s Oldest pub (10-minute walk)

Very much the reigning champion of ancient pubs in Dublin , and by some distance! Just a 10-minute walk from the Guinness Factory and Proudly boasting on a scroll of painted parchment on the pub’s whitewashed walls that it dates back to 1198, the Brazen Head is Dublin’s oldest pub and is also one of its most popular. See our guide to the oldest pubs in Dublin for more.

3. Phoenix Park (15-minute walk)

Dominated by the 200ft tall Wellington Monument, Phoenix Park is an enormous space and one of the largest enclosed public parks in any capital city in Europe (the Wellington Monument is also the largest obelisk in Europe!). Make the 15-minute stroll across the Liffey and up Wolfe Tone Quay to explore its vast expanse. It’s also home to Dublin Zoo and Áras an Uachtaráin .

4. Kilmainham Gaol (20-minute walk)

kilmainham gaol dublin

Infamous for being the site of incarceration for many Nationalist leaders, Kilmainham Gaol has played a hugely significant and symbolic part in Irish history and the prison is well worth a visit. Lying a 20-minute walk west of Roe and Co, former inmates include Charles Stewart Parnell, Patrick Pearse and Eamon de Valera.

Sailor Moon's New Photo Release Reveals Cast in Full Costume for Show Debut

Nearly five years since the last stage performance, the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon - Nogizaka46 Version musical has returned for another run of shows. The members of the Fifth Generation of Nogizaka46 have now shared their thoughts on the musical's grand return, accompanied by a fresh round of photo releases displaying the cast's redesigned costumes.

According to the Japanese entertainment website Natalie , the official live-action Sailor Moon musical resumed activities on April 12, 2024, at IMM THEATER in Tokyo, Japan. The last time the anime-inspired stage show performed was in November 2019 in Shanghai, China. As with previous shows, the live-action Sailor Moon actors are played by the latest generation of Nogizaka46, a popular Japanese female idol group comprised of of 11 members.

Sailor Moon Transforms Magical Sailor Scout Items Into Keychain and Necklace Collection

The Sailor Moon musical production features two sets of performers to play the Pretty Guardians dubbed Team Star and Team Moon. The current run (April 12-29) features the actors of Team Moon: Nagi Inoue as Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon; Aya Ogawa as Ami Mizuno/ Sailor Mercury; Hina Okamoto as Rei Hino/Sailor Mars; Mao Ioki as Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter; and Teresa Ikeda as Minako Aino/Sailor Venus. Additional actors include Tenju Mitsuki as Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask and Rinko Matsubara as Queen Beryl.

"I'm really happy to have had this opportunity as a 5th generation member of Nogizaka46," Inoue said. "I want to live my life to the fullest as Usagi Tsukino and Sailor Moon in the world of Sailor Moon , surrounded by the wonderful cast members. Thank you!" Ogawa also expressed her gratitude for participating in a "historical musical," stating, "I wanted to convey the charm of Ami Mizuno, who is intelligent, fragile, pretty, and strong, and Sailor Mercury, and to convey to the audience what I felt after watching Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon : Girls are the best!"

World's Only Permanent Sailor Moon Store Set to Reopen With New Logo & Merchandise

Okamoto shared her early difficulties in rehearsing for the show, such as memorizing the script and choreography while being introduced to numerous stage terms. "Once I was able to internalize the script, rehearsals became a lot of fun. Acting became more and more fun," she said. "I was inspired many times by the performances of my co-stars, and every time I hit a wall, I discovered new things every day. I once again realized the joy and enjoyment of being on stage."

Ioki talked about the joy she's experiencing from portraying a different side of herself through Sailor Jupiter. "It's fun watching everyone's suites and plays, and I'm also enjoying being able to become a different Mako-chan from myself, and I'm a little sad when I think that it will end someday. Well, now it's time for the real thing (lol)." Ikeda expressed a similar sentiment: "Sailor Venus is a bright, sparkling idol who is the exact opposite of me. At first, I was worried about whether I would be able to become Minako-chan. During this time, she received the support of many people and was able to celebrate her performance."

The Sailor Moon anime franchise is available on multiple streaming services, including Crunchyroll, Hulu, YouTube and Netflix. The recent anime movies based on the Sailor Moon Crystal anime reboot are available on Netflix. Naoko Takeuchi is the writer and illustrator of the original Sailor Moon manga.

Sailor Moon's New Photo Release Reveals Cast in Full Costume for Show Debut

StarTribune

Review: sibling pop band ajr put on a fun show in st. paul, but not a good concert.

After rising from New York City street buskers to national club and festival giggers over the past nine years, sibling pop band AJR came to Xcel Energy Center on Wednesday practically screaming, "And now we are arena rockers!"

The band of three brothers — Adam, Jack and Ryan Met — brought a large and impressive stage production with them to St. Paul, one loaded with clever visual stunts and a sprawling, kaleidoscope-like array of lighting. They also brought out an excited, youthful audience of more than 12,000 fans, a surprisingly high turnout for a cultishly loved act whose name still might get first mistaken for a discount airline.

There was one key missing ingredient in AJR's big coming-out as an arena-rock act, though: the rock.

Of course, nobody expected these three ultra-straight-laced dudes — who sing about playing with toys ("Don't Throw Out My Legos") and have a song in a Wendy's commercial ("The Good Part") — to come out and crank it like Rage Against the Machine.

But between all their cuddly and cutesy songs and all the attention to staging and visual trickery, the "concert" seemed less like a rock show and more like a Disney Broadway staging — or even like a slightly more grown-up version of Nickelodeon's "Yo Gabba Gabba!" tour, which many of the attendees might've seen as toddlers 14 years ago.

The cartoony showmanship was apparent right away in the opening song, "The Maybe Man." About 10 stage crew members appeared at different spots of the big stage dressed like lead singer Jack Met, so it wasn't clear who the real Jack was at first. It helped that all the would-be Jacks' faces were shrouded by an Elmer Fudd-style, floppy-eared winter hat of the style that even most Minnesotans consider too goofy to wear, but the real Jack proceeded to wear it all night.

There were many more optical illusions like that army of Jacks to come. The real Jack performed as if falling through the sky in "Touchy Feely Fool." Then another fake version of Jack appeared as a shadow on the video backdrop to compete in a drum-off with him during "Bang!" No kidding, the pre-recorded drum parts clearly topped Jack's live drumming.

There was a lot more pre-recorded tracks used, too. In what are otherwise pretty simple, jangly, Ed Sheeran-on-Red-Bull pop songs, AJR heavily employed background vocals and other electronic enhancement alongside other instruments such as violin and trumpet — a mix that sometimes sounded overcomplicated and not well-mixed at all.

Amid all the flash and showmanship, though, the Met boys stayed humble and sounded all aw-shucks between songs as they talked about playing to a full arena on tour.

"I truly don't know how this happened, how we got here," Jack Met told the crowd. "It's because of you."

Adam Met recounted their prior Twin Cities gigs at venues including the Garage in Burnsville and the Armory in Minneapolis. He forgot to mention them playing to a smaller crowd at the COVID-clouded Basilica Block Party in 2021 , though.

One of the more straight-up emotional and touching moments of the show came when Ryan Met sang the three-part chronicle of a failed relationship, "Turning Out." That abruptly gave way to one of the goofiest parts of the 100-minute show, when Jack and the rest of the band appeared high up in the nosebleed seats with other band members to perform their viral hit "World's Smallest Violin" while seated between fans.

It seemed like every time AJR's performance started to gain a little unfettered concert mojo, the musical energy came to a halt for another gimmicky showman stunt.

The sharpest lull came when the brothers gave a loooong demonstration about how they produce music at home right after playing the night's most high-energy tune, the politely groovy rouser "Burn the House Down." How rocking was the rockiest song of the night? On a scale of 1 to 10, it was about a 311.

Compared to AJR's ultra-cheery vibe, opening act Dean Lewis came off like something of a party-pooper.

The Australian pop strummer — a little more soulful and a lot more dramatic than AJR — played an inordinate amount of heartache-y downers in his 10-song set. One was a genuine tearjerker that discernibly impacted the many early-arrival fans, "How Do I Say Goodbye," written about his ailing father. "Half a Man" and a couple more edged on whiny, though, with his sometimes pitchy, crackly voice adding a wince factor.

Dean was quite a fun charmer between songs, though, and threw in covers of Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer" and the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" to lighten the mood with big audience singalongs. He also mentioned he's going out on his own after the AJR tour — but he, too, forgot to mention the Basilica Block Party, which he's due to hit Aug. 2 .

Armchair travelers, rejoice: AD took a jaunt around the world for our May International issue, and the pictures are worth a thousand words. If you, too, are working on “everywhere,” consider this a little shortcut. The richly individual residences and projects shown this month are so powerfully evocative that you might feel you have journeyed to Ibiza, Costa Rica, Lagos, the French countryside, Mexico, and even Los Angeles just by turning the pages. Add the passionate language each homeowner uses to describe the singular lure of their chosen locale, and the picture is complete.

Acclaimed artist Yinka Shonibare, who is based in London, returned to his hometown in Nigeria to build a spectacular artist’s residence that doubles as his own base when in Lagos. “I realized there was a need here; young artists needed to be mentored,” says Shonibare. “We could build 10 of these, and it still wouldn’t be enough.”

When a New York City family decamped to Costa Rica , in 2020, they hired recently launched LA design studio Years and local architecture firm Garnier Arquitectos to craft a dream house that could withstand the seven-month rainy season. “We wanted to learn how to live in harmony with nature , so we decided that we were going to be okay with the ants and the power outages and all the rest,” says owner Reshma Patel, adding, “You can try to keep it at bay, but the jungle always finds a way in.”

Writer Fred Bernstein profiles the dazzling Colectivo C733, a group of five Mexican architects designing brilliant public spaces in their own country. Their eco park in Bacalar hovers a boardwalk over a fragile lagoon and reef to stunning, artistic effect, proving that “good architecture does not need a building,” as one partner says.

As for our cover star, actor Emma Roberts, she calls her LA nest “my very own grown-up dollhouse,” and adds that when she and her young son moved in, “I just remember feeling like we are exactly where we need to be.” Sometimes everywhere is just one perfect somewhere .

Made In America's Flagship Store in Elma, NY Invites Groups to Enjoy Our All American Hospitality!

Made in America's Flagship Store in Elma Invites Groups to Enjoy Our All American Hospitality!

Our All-American Hospitality Experience

Located next door to the original store location that opened in 2010, the new Made in America Store – the company’s flagship – was custom-designed to offer groups a complete hospitality experience. The hospitality suite is adjacent to our kitchen and home section of the store. Shopping is on one-level, with two at-grade entrances (one is specially designated for groups). Featuring a brand new dining amenity, the store now has an indoor dining room with the largest privately-owned mural of the U.S. Constitution on display. Comfortably seating 60 persons inside, additional seating is offered from May through October outdoors.

In response to motor coach groups utilizing our store as an en route rest and snack stop, we have added a ladies’ restroom with six stalls, separate, free motor coach parking, and dumping facilities right across the street . Coaches can even purchase diesel fuel, obtain light maintenance service, and utilize a vehicle wash next door.

Picnic On The Porch

Groups are served buffet-style and casually dine in our store's hospitality suite (seating capacity is 60 guests), or outdoors on our wrap-around porch (which can accommodate another 40 guests, for a total of 100 guests if all guests choose to eat on the porch or spread out between both locations).

ADVANCE RESERVATIONS, GUARANTEE & DEPOSIT REQUIRED!

We love your gig you've got going. It feels good in the heart to see you succeed. God bless." - Kenneth M. Kenosha, Wisconsin

"Everybody was so nice to the young people who came for Pancake Breakfast and to shop in the store. The food was great and all the people who helped find things for them were great. It was nice having our young people treated like normal people. Also we all noticed how clean the store was and also the restrooms. We will be back for another visit." - Grace B., Friends with Special Needs

" Fun stop for our group. We utilized the food truck for yumm-o lunch, and Dorothy was great to educate us ahead of time how to best navigate for our large group. Thanks for hosting us!" - Making Memories, Google Review (5 Stars)

Live DJ sets! Freebies! Exclusive drops! 12 L.A. shops going big for Record Store Day

• Show more sharing options

420 isn’t just for stoners. This year, Record Store Day — the worldwide celebration for independent record shops that typically happens every third Saturday of April — falls on the storied day.

Across Los Angeles County, audiophiles and vinyl collectors will converge at participating stores to search for one-of-a-kind wax and CD releases by artists new and old, along with other one-of-a-kind items. Even in the age of Spotify, vinyl records have stayed in demand — more than 43 million people bought vinyl records last year, according to the Recording Industry Assn. of America (RIAA).

“It’s really like an Easter egg hunt,” says longtime collector and DJ Johnny Young, who goes by the moniker Black Museumist, of Record Store Day. “There’s a lot of energy.”

This year’s event brings in roughly 400 anticipated titles including a live recording of Talking Heads from a 1977 performance (featuring seven previously unheard songs), a 12-inch vinyl release of Daft Punk’s “Something About Us (Love Theme From Interstella 5555)” , an unreleased live solo recording of “The Godmother of Rock n’ Roll” by Sister Rosetta Tharpe (from 1966) and a 10-year anniversary edition of Freddie Gibbs & Madlib’s “ Piñata .”

Planning your weekend?

Stay up to date on the best things to do, see and eat in L.A .

Also, this year’s Record Store Day ambassador, Paramore , will release a remix version of its 2023 album, “This Is Why” and Cheech and Chong will reissue the soundtrack for their 1978 film, “Up in Smoke,” on smoky green vinyl just in time for 4/20.

You can see the full list here . Also, note that there are three types of special releases: RSD Exclusive (when the record is pressed specifically for the holiday and isn’t expected to otherwise be available), RSD First (a special variant is being made for Record Store Day and a standard black version will be released later) and RSD Limited run/regional focus (quantities are typically fewer than 1,000 units and may be easier to find in a specific city or region), according to SCNow .

For people like Young and Mathieu Schreyer , a music supervisor and former KCRW DJ, every day is Record Store Day. But Schreyer, who’s been DJing for two decades, says he understands the value in having an intentional day to patronize local vinyl shops.

“We can’t just diss Spotify and then not participate and support when it’s needed,” he says. “I think it’s important to support the record stores and the culture.”

But even if you’re not interested in copping a special release, it’s still worth checking out what your favorite record store has to offer on April 20. You’ll find events like in-store DJ sets, pop-up shopping experiences and in-store performances.

To help you plan, we’ve rounded up a list of local Record Store Day events you should check out. Pro tip: If you’re looking for RSD collectibles, be sure to call the vinyl shop beforehand to see what they’ll have in stock. Quantities will be limited and every store won’t carry the same titles.

Additional reporting by August Brown, Kenan Draughorne, Vanessa Franko, Nate Jackson and Steve Appleford.

A Full Bite Nutrition

Take a Grocery Store Tour With a Registered Dietitian!

  • January 27, 2023

This blog article is intended to inform and educate and is not a replacement for medical advice.

Are you confused about all the choices at the grocery store and aren’t sure which foods will actually support your health?

Have you been taught that “shopping the perimeter” is the only way to eat “healthy” foods? What if you like foods from the middle aisles?

Do you wish you had a personal guide to tell you how to use foods in recipes you’ll actually like?

I get it. Grocery shopping can be overwhelming and confusing, especially if you have specific health needs, food allergies or a medical condition.

But I’m here to clear up all the chaos and make grocery shopping easy!

Ready to learn more? Let’s go.

What is a grocery store tour?

A grocery store tour is a personalized, dietitian-guided grocery education trip. During my grocery store tours, the aisles become our classroom, and there I teach you all about which foods will support your health goals, taste preferences, and budget.

During these tours, I take the complicated science of nutrition and break it down into bite size pieces that you can apply immediately to your menu plan and shopping list.

Most grocery stores have more than 40,000 food choices – that’s a lot of potential decision-making! Together we sift through the foods available so you can narrow in on foods you love that will support your health.

What will I get out of a tour?

  • You’ll save money. My expert tips will help you stretch your food dollars in every section of the store.
  • A better understanding of food labels. Nutrition facts will make more sense when I place them in context of your individual health goals.
  • Confidence that your grocery list aligns with your goals. No more wondering which foods and recipes will help you support your health.
  • Meal planning will become easier and faster and you may end up wasting less food in the long run, saving you money.
  • Empowerment. After our hands-on session, clients are more empowered than ever to carry out their nutrition plan with new tools and knowledge.

What will we cover together?

  • Produce: We’ll explore produce items you may never have used before as well as the standard fruits and vegetables that enrich any eating pattern with lots of flavor, vitamins and minerals.
  • Proteins: Well review cuts of meats, plant proteins, seafood, and dairy products to help ensure you’re getting the protein you need in a form that you like. We can discuss cooking methods, safe handling, and storage, too.
  • Grains, Beans and Carbs: You know eating whole grains and beans will support your energy needs, but which packages contain them? And which ones taste good? I’ll resolve all your questions about carbs and share lots of ideas and recipes.
  • Fats and Oils : If you’ve ever stared at the sea of choices in the cooking oil section and wondered, “can you use the same oil for cooking as you do for baking and salad dressings?” From extra virgin to cold pressed, I’ve got you covered.
  • Canned, Frozen and Packaged Foods: We’ll read labels together so that we can demystify the thousands of convenience foods in the center aisles of the store. These aisles contain nutritious foods that can save you time in the kitchen and money on your grocery bill.

A man in a blue sweater leaning to read a food nutrition label on a packaged food in a grocery store

What needs to happen prior to a grocery store tour?

Grocery store tours are available after an initial nutrition counseling visit. During this session, we review your medical history and current lifestyle so that I understand your health needs and goals. This helps us customize your tour and use our time most effectively.

We also discuss food preferences and allergies or sensitivities. That way we can focus on foods that are aligned with your likes and health needs when we get to the supermarket. I can also be prepared to introduce new foods you may enjoy that you haven’t yet tried.

What if I have a health condition, like IBS, pre-diabetes, heart disease or fatty liver?

Your health history and current health goals will be at the heart of our grocery store discussions. Knowing your medical needs will guide our tour so that you know how to create delicious meals that promote your best health – whether that’s heart health, liver health, gut health or overall health!

What clients are saying about grocery store tours

“I would…spend a lot of time thinking about foods I would like to buy, but don’t have the knowledge around what to do with them once I get home. I ended up wasting a ton of food!!! So, I asked Britt for a grocery store tour. We walked down the aisles and she explained to me…how [foods] could be used. I showed her the items I mindlessly put into my cart and asked her to explain the nutritional labels. This information will lead me to make better choices. I needed to break my grocery shopping habit! Britt is amazing! She is patient, thoughtful in her responses and non judgmental.” – Current Client

“Britt is a knowledgeable, patient and inquisitive nutritionist. She takes the time to understand you as a person and your environment. Britt does not bring any judgment and is extremely supportive. Her resources and guidance are evidence based and factual. The internet is full of misinformation and I trust Britts advice.” – Current Client

How should I prepare for my grocery store tour?

After your initial visit, take some time to think about any questions you have about grocery shopping, food selection, and your health goals. Here are some questions to think about before the shopping trip:

  • Are there foods you have seen in the store but are unfamiliar with? Make a list!
  • Do you want to understand how to read nutrition labels?
  • What’s the difference between a “serving size” and a “portion size”?
  • Are there foods you would eat but don’t know how to prepare in a way you’ll enjoy?
  • Wondering if frozen and canned foods fit your health goals?
  • Confused about which proteins or fats you should select? Let’s talk about them!
  • Wondering which veggies actually taste good? How can you cook them so that they’re not army green?

We can address all of these questions and more!

How long do grocery store tours take?

Tours usually take 60 to 90 minutes, depending on what needs to be covered. Some clients have even wanted to do two tours, one at their larger chain store and one at the local co-op, where we delve into all the bulk foods available.

Do you do virtual grocery store tours?

Yes! Please contact me to discuss a virtual supermarket tour option.

How do I sign up for a tour?

Hello there! I’m Britt, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. I can help you find freedom from life-long dieting, disordered eating and eating disorders. When I’m not writing about ditching diet culture, joyful movement or improving body image, you can find me hiking in Vermont’s Green Mountains, eating pizza, making modern quilts or sipping a hot cup of tea.
