More than 50% of travelers are looking to plan a solo adventure in 2024, and married women are one of the largest drivers of the market, according to a recent Skift report .

Whether you choose to travel as part of a group tour or independently, it's never been easier (or more affordable) to chart your own course. Many hefty single supplements are now being waived or reduced for both overland journeys and cruises .

For first-time solo travelers , there are plenty of U.S. destinations that combine easy access, relative affordability, welcoming vibes and diverse experiences to help streamline a solo vacation. This enables you to step out of your comfort zone and experience travel in a new way.

With that in mind, here are 12 of our favorite destinations for solo travel in the U.S. for 2024.

San Luis Obispo, California

Best for: Surfing by day, wine tasting by night

Equidistant from San Francisco and Los Angeles , San Luis Obispo County combines lush scenery, coastal adventures, historic charm and superb wine-tasting within a relatively small and easy-to-navigate area. Often referred to as "Little Santa Barbara," the city is a charming, laid-back stopover for solo travelers embarking on a Pacific Coast Highway road trip.

The unpretentious downtown area is studded with historic landmarks, including the 18th-century San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Mission, now a museum housing artifacts from Native American and Mission-era history. Foodies should time their stay with the bustling farmers market (Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.), where more than 100 vendors purvey a bounty of farm-fresh produce, flowers and even farm-to-table dinners.

Downtown SLO's welcoming wine bars and tasting rooms are a cozy backdrop for solo travelers looking to make new friends. They provide a fun initiation into coastal California's prized pinot noir and chardonnay varieties.

Just a 10-minute drive from town, family-owned vineyards and tasting rooms dot the lush rolling hills of the Edna Valley. Some 30 miles north, the Paso Robles wine region is often touted as an affordable and more laid-back dupe for Napa.

At Pismo Beach, adventure lovers can surf, boogie board or ride an ATV across the largest swath of coastal dunes in California. This classic California beach town is surrounded by the Pismo Preserve, which provides sanctuary to owls, hawks, peregrine falcons and other wildlife.

Santa Fe has long been a haven for solo travelers in search of spiritual fulfillment and ethereal natural wonders. Nestled beneath the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the sacred ruins, shrines, New Age institutes and yoga centers offer healing and enlightenment for those at a crossroads in life.

As one of the world's greatest art centers, the New Mexico capital is celebrated for its rich tricultural heritage (Puebloan, Spanish and Anglo-American), vibrant arts scene and striking adobe architecture.

Art lovers can spend a day perusing the galleries and artisan studios lining Canyon Road. Then, they can head to an open-air concert at the world-famous Santa Fe Opera, which draws opera devotees from all across the globe.

Santa Fe's mystical desert landscapes are immortalized by the late painter Georgia O'Keeffe, the "Mother of American Modernism." The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, housed in a former Baptist church, holds the world's largest repository of the late artist's works.

The city has also become a mainspring for innovative Southwestern flavors and cuisine, and you can find some of the West's most acclaimed restaurants here.

Asheville, North Carolina

Best for: Hiking, biking and beer

Asheville truly has it all for outdoor enthusiasts. You can hike and mountain bike trails through the hazy vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains (the city provides a " hike finder " to help you find the perfect trail) and paddle down the French Broad River. Or, simply check out Asheville's outdoor shopping districts, like the River Arts District or Biltmore Park, by foot. (Shopping counts as cardio in my book.)

When it's time for some apres-hike brews and bites, head to one of Asheville's breweries. There are plenty to choose from, but Wicked Weed and Hi-Wire top the list for spots to satisfy your thirst and hunger in a fun setting.

For an upscale boutique stay in downtown Asheville, check into The Foundry Hotel , a Curio Collection by Hilton property that starts at $362 or 76,000 Hilton Honors points per night. Another solid option, the budget-friendly Hotel Indigo Asheville Downtown starts at $135 or 27,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

New Orleans

Best for: Live music and livelier crowds

Even if you visit the Big Easy by yourself, you are never truly alone. Whether you're vibing with the throngs of tourists on Bourbon Street, standing in line for beignets at Cafe du Monde or learning about the city's rich history on a group walking tour, you're likely to be surrounded by friendly faces with similar interests (and a taste for powdered-sugar-covered fried dough).

If you've never been to New Orleans , make time to hit up hot spots like Pat O'Briens for a rum-soaked hurricane; Central Grocery, where the famous muffuletta sandwich was invented; and Preservation Jazz Hall for live jazz. If you still have time during your trip, venture farther from the French Quarter to City Park and Mardi Gras World. Or, take a guided tour of New Orleans' hauntingly beautiful mausoleums.

Best for: Music lovers and foodies

The Texas state capital is known for many things — delicious barbecue, a stellar music scene, gorgeous green spaces, lakes where you can stay active and the world's largest urban colony of bats, to name a few. Visiting Austin as a solo traveler is convenient because there are various neighborhoods you can visit to enjoy dining, drinks and entertainment all in one place.

Sixth Street closes down to traffic on weekends and is a great spot for creative cocktails and neon-lit music venues. For something a little more laid back, head to Rainey Street. Also, South Congress, with its unique boutiques and variety of dining options, is a must-visit for both locals and tourists.

Zilker Park puts more than 350 acres of outdoor fun at your fingertips. You can swim in the spring-fed Barton Springs Pool, explore on a rented bike or canoe, or time your visit to annual events like the Austin City Limits Music Festival or the Austin Kite Festival.

Some of the best points hotels in Austin are close to downtown. This includes The Driskill, a World of Hyatt property starting at $369 or 21,000 World of Hyatt points per night, and the Austin Proper Hotel , which starts at $400 or 42,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Zion National Park, Utah

Best for: Breathtaking scenery and an accessible gateway town

One of the nation's most popular national parks, Zion makes for an awe-inspiring solo adventure with breathtaking landscapes, epic hiking and bike trails and fascinating wildlife.

In terms of transportation logistics, accessibility and accommodation offerings, planning a trip to Zion National Park is relatively straightforward. The gateway for exploration is charming Springdale, a small town just steps from the park's main entrance that has maintained its quirky vibe despite its soaring popularity.

Amid the winding canyon of sandstone buttresses, sheer red-rock cliffs and slot canyons, you'll find lush evergreen forests, kaleidoscopic wildflowers and mystical hanging gardens. If you are short on time, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive (accessible only by shuttle bus from March through October) provides a glorious glimpse of the park's red rocks and easy access to several visitor-approved trailheads.

Angels Landing is an iconic hike you won't want to miss. Not for the faint of heart, some 21 hair-raising switchbacks, built into the rift, weave their way to Scout Lookout, which affords jaw-dropping panoramas of Zion Canyon.

Due to increased popularity, hikers need to enter a lottery in order to secure a permit. Depending on your fitness level (and traffic on the trail), it takes between three and five hours to ascend the canyon's east wall.

Just 1 mile from the park's entrance, the SpringHill Suites Springdale Zion National Park is one of the brand's finest iterations. The property offers modern, well-equipped suites that are both large and comfortable; it also offers complimentary breakfast every day and an outdoor pool with phenomenal views of Zion National Park. As a Bonvoy property, you can expect to redeem 40,000 to 60,000 points here; or you can use a 50,000-point Marriott certificate for a lower-rate stay. Cash rates generally start at $275 a night.

Another option is the luxe tents provided at Under Canvas' glamping site in nearby Virgin. The 60 luxe tents and suites come in different sizes and layouts, but all are kitted out with plush king-size beds, en suite bathrooms with hot showers and organic products, and in-tent wood-burning stoves. Rates start from $399 per night.

Portland, Oregon

Best for: Exploring the unique landscape of the Pacific Northwest

Portland is surrounded by natural beauty on all sides. Though the city lies in a valley, you can often see Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens and the towering green firs and pines surrounding it. To best enjoy these natural wonders, visit Powell Butte for panoramic mountain views or the outlook behind Pittock Mansion for city views with Mount Hood in the background.

You'd be remiss to skip all things weird and wonderful within Portland's city limits. Voracious readers could spend hours in Powell's City of Books, the country's largest independent bookstore. There's also the outdoor Portland Saturday Market , which is considered the largest continually operating arts and crafts market in the country. The city has so many food carts it created a handy guide to help you find exactly what you're hungry for.

Many of Portland's hotels reflect the city's unique style. Choose the Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland (starting at $170 or 32,000 IHG One Rewards points per night) or The Nines Hotel Portland (starting at $230 or 43,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night), both downtown.

Best for: A mix of beach days and California history

San Diego is home to many beautiful beaches, but there's more to do than just spend lazy days in the sand (though I wouldn't blame you if you didn't leave the beach during your visit).

This year, the city is especially primed for discovery, as it has been designated the World Design Capital for 2024, along with Tijuana, Mexico. It's the first time that two neighboring cities in two different countries have shared the distinction. Both cities will celebrate the designation through unique experiences, events and festivals.

Many of San Diego's best-known attractions are in Balboa Park, including the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the San Diego Air & Space Museum, and many splendid gardens and recreational areas.

About 2 miles west of Balboa Park on San Diego Bay is the USS Midway Museum , where you can learn about historic naval aircraft and helicopters on board the USS Midway aircraft carrier. Old Town San Diego — the first European settlement in California — and the Gaslamp Quarter are also worth peeling yourself away from the beach for.

If you prefer to stay close to downtown and the bay, reserve a room at the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego Bay Downtown , where rates start at $269 or 67,000 Hilton Honors points per night. Best for: Legendary country music

From the 4,000-seat Grand Ole Opry to the rows of bars with live music along Lower Broadway, you are never too far from legendary country stars and up-and-coming crooners when you visit Nashville.

However, Nashville isn't only a hotbed of honky tonk. It's also where music fans go to immerse themselves in the history of country music. You can pay homage to the greats like Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Or, you can visit RCA Studio B, where stars like Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton recorded country classics.

Nashville is also well known for its shopping scene. Visit The District in downtown Nashville for everything from record albums to cowboy boots. Then, head to the shops in Hillsboro Village or Gulch for local and nationally known fashion and accessory brands.

The Embassy Suites Downtown Nashville (starting at $160 or 47,000 Hilton Honors points per night) offers spacious rooms and a rooftop indoor pool, but for a true Nashville experience you'll never forget, go for the Dolly Parton suite at the Graduate Nashville (starting at $300 per night).

Orcas Island, Washington

Best for : Idyllic scenery and amazing wildlife watching

A 90-minute drive north of Seattle, the port of Anacortes is the departure point for the Salish Sea's San Juan Islands archipelago (10 miles offshore from the Washington mainland). It's a mesmerizing tapestry of emerald-green islands, glacier-carved mountains and a sparkling sea.

The largest of the chain, Orcas Island appeals to independent travelers with its idyllic scenery, peaceful ambience and warm, communal spirit. The main village, Eastsound, is sprinkled with galleries, intimate restaurants and watering holes. You can savor freshly caught seafood and craft cocktails while trading stories with locals and fellow travelers.

Nature lovers can embark on hikes through the 5,252-acre Moran State Park, laced with over 38 miles of trails and a route for every skill set. The summit of the 2,400-foot-tall Mount Constitution rewards hikers with 360-degree views of Vancouver Island as well as both Mount Rainier and Mount Baker on the mainland.

If you prefer to take in the scenery and dazzling wildlife with new friends, join a tour with Outer Island Excursions, which offers memorable whale-watching cruises.

9 Steps for Planning the Perfect Solo Trip

If you’ve never tried planning the perfect solo trip or if your previous “perfect” solo trips didn’t live up to your expectations, you might feel overwhelmed at where to begin. The following guide leads you step-by-step through the planning process, from figuring out your goals to booking your ticket. The more time you take deciding the Where , When , Why , and How of your trip, the less likely you are to be derailed by What If…? .

There are no right or wrong answers to the questions in each of the following steps. Just be honest with yourself and realistic about what you’re hoping to get out of the experience . If you are, you should end up with a trip tailor-made to your interests, your budget, and your comfort level. Step 1: Figure out why you want to travel

Begin by thinking about why you want to travel. What do you hope to get out of your trip?

Do you want to break out of a rut in your normal life? Do you need to get away and relax? Are you looking for comfort and convenience or are you looking for action and adventure? Do you want to do the things you’ve heard about your whole life, like ride in a gondola through Venice? Or do you yearn to experience things relatively few others have done, like stay at a buddhist monastery in Tibet? Are you looking to gain confidence or regain your footing in life? Or is it simply a matter of gathering enough memories to tide you over until your next trip?

Step 2: Calculate your budget

More than anything, your budget will determine the nature, though not necessarily the quality, of your trip. When calculating your budget, don’t forget to factor in all of the one-time and daily expenses you might be faced with . The following are some of the more common ones:

• Passport application fees
• Travel visas fees
• Travel vaccinations
• Transportation from your arrival point – airport, bus terminal, train station, etc. — to your accommodation and back again
• A local SIM card for your smart phone, if you want to avoid roaming charges
• Weekly laundromat visits
• Public transportation
• Museum entry fees
• City taxes on hotel guests. These usually run about 1 euro/night in Europe.
• Alcohol and club entry fees

Step 3: Decide where you want to go

This is probably the easiest one because you’ve probably been thinking about it for a long time already. If not, your answers to Step 1 should have sparked some ideas. Forget what everyone else has told you you “must” go see or do . Ask yourself a simple question, “If I could go to sleep tonight and wake up somewhere else tomorrow, where would that be?” When you have the answer, you’re ready to move on to Step 4.

Step 4: Determine the level of comfort you want

If you can handle sleeping in hostels, traveling by bus, and cooking your own meals, you’ll be able to travel for longer on a lot less money than if you want luxury hotels, airline flights, and restaurant dining. In general, the cheaper your travel, the more social it is , as hostels are much better places to meet fellow travelers than 5-star hotel lobbies. If your budget is limited but you really want comfort, consider shortening the length of your trip. Alternately, plan to spend most of your time living cheaply with the occasional splurge of a nice hotel or meal.

Step 5: Calculate how long you can (or want to) travel

Just because you can afford to travel for three months doesn’t mean you necessarily should . Be honest with yourself and, using your budget, your destination, and your comfort requirements as a guide, determine how long your trip should be. Hawaii always sounds wonderful, but after a week of perfect weather and wide sandy beaches, I always grow restless. The solution for me is to break my trip up into 5 to 7 day chunks, each different from the previous one. This helps me avoid boredom and gives me something to look forward to each week.

Step 6: Decide when to go

Keep in mind factors like cost. Most touristy places have a high and low season, so they’re a lot more expensive during the main part of the tourist season. Going when it’s cheaper will save you money, but you might find attractions closed or with reduced hours . Many stores and restaurants in Europe shut down from the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6) until the end of the month and many stay closed even into mid or late February.

Also factor in the weather during the time you’re planning to visit. Keep in mind that many tourist brochures use the term “Green Season” instead of “Rainy Season.” Make sure your trip is not going to fall during monsoon season, wildfire season, avalanche season, etc . In Spain, for example, Madrid and Sevilla become virtual ghost towns in August when huge segments of the local populations head for the coast to escape the oppressive heat.

Make sure whatever you want to see is not seasonal . You’ll get to experience nearly 24 hours of daylight in Fairbanks, Alaska in the summer, but all of that sunlight means you’re not going to be able to see the Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights). Yosemite is gorgeous during the warm days of mid-summer, but some of the waterfalls all but dry up. Milan’s La Scala opera house is world-class, but like many opera houses in Europe, it’s closed in August.

Step 7: Decide how you want to get there

A friend of mine once booked a passenger cabin on a cargo ship traveling from Rio de Janiero to Salerno, Italy. The journey took two weeks, there was only one other passenger onboard, and she was only allowed to interact with the captain and other officers. Despite this, she loved the trip because she viewed the journey to her destination as another part of the experience. I personally travel by train whenever possible even though it’s often more expensive and time-consuming than flying. For me, the freedom to wander around, sprawl out, and get comfortable more than outweighs the extra costs involved. Ask yourself, is the journey to get to your destination important to you or do you really just want to get there as fast or as cheaply as possible?

Step 8: Figure out what you want to do when you get there

If you’re more of a nervous traveler, you’ll want to have some sort of itinerary worked out before your arrival. If you’re more adaptive and comfortable with not knowing things, a vague plan might be enough. When I travel, I usually book a hotel or AirBnB ** rental for the first day or two. The rest of my trip is unplanned. Each morning I decide what I want to do and where I want to go. In contrast, a great friend of mine isn’t comfortable leaving for vacation until she’s conducted extensive research. She needs to know everything about each city, hotel, museum, and restaurant she plans to visit while away. There’s really nothing wrong with either approach, as long as you’re comfortable with it.

Step 9: Make your booking

Now that you’ve nailed down the why, the what, the when, and the how, the only thing left to do is to book your ticket. For over ten years, I’ve used Orbitz.com ** for most of my travel planning. It’s an easy-to-use resource for finding the cheapest hotels and flights available. If you buy a package deal — a flight and a hotel stay — you can usually get a signficant discount. If you become a member of Orbitz before booking your trip, you will get a 1% rebate, called Orbucks, on the cost of your trip. Hotels.com ** is another resource I use a lot. Rather than a 1% rebate, they offer one free night for every 10 you pay for. For both sites, sign up  before booking if you want your purchases to count toward your rebate or nightly totals .

Welcome, fellow solo traveler. This is where your adventure begins. Solo traveling is a beautiful gift. You’re going to learn so much about yourself, make so many fabulous new friends, meet so many beautiful strangers, and see so many vibrant landscapes and skyscrapers, too. The world is your oyster, but the question is, where do you start?

When I see lists like these I often just see suggestions for places women should travel to solo based on only one thing: safety. While crime stats are worth noting, they’re not the defining factor for a great place for women to travel alone. The best destinations aren’t just the popular and well-trodden ones, either. Some of the best places to travel to by yourself might be in the places you least expected, or didn’t even know existed yet.

The best destinations for solo female travelers will be where locals are particularly friendly and welcoming, or it’s social due to a shared interest like surfing or diving, and even though it might be off the beaten path a bit, it’s not so remote that you’ll be the only one there. It still has that special charm that makes it feel authentic and inviting.

Sounds amazing, right? So where can you find these places? I’ve searched high and low, and these are some of my favorite destinations for solo female travel – they might surprise you:

1. Lombok, Indonesia

…because it has everything Bali had once upon a time.

Many people, myself included, are put off by Bali’s overtourism , where there’s constantly bad traffic, beaches littered with trash, and long waits for photos at popular Instagram spots. So where can one go in Indonesia where there are stunning waterfalls, nice beaches and a social yet laidback atmosphere, like Bali once upon a time had? The answer is Lombok . Not only is Lombok overall a wonderful alternative to Bali, but also cheaper. As a solo traveler, I find it easier to socialize and connect with other solo travelers in Lombok, as people tend to hang out at the same spot, like Kuta , or go to the same beaches.

2. Siargao Island, The Philippines

…because there’s nothing like a little solo motorbike adventure.

Siargao Island is a water-lover and general adventurer’s dream. You can go on a little solo motorbike adventure, as the roads are mostly flat and easy. It is also a surfer’s paradise with a playful soul to it, so if you are a surfing enthusiast, or have been thinking of picking it up, Siargao is perfect. The island’s popularity is growing rapidly, but the atmosphere remains laidback and relaxing. This means that it’s just as easy to meet others as to be by yourself. I was able to hang out with surfers on the beach, talk to other people in restaurants and cafes, and retreat to my little corner in an adorable guesthouse every night. It’s perfect!

You’ll find evidence of such development in the clean streets, skyscrapers, strictly-enforced laws, and a plenitude of things to do, like hopping around at the speakeasy cocktail bars or walking through the Gardens by the Bay. The language barrier may make you feel a little bit intimidated at first, but virtually everything from public transportation to ordering food from a local restaurant is so organized and systematic, it makes traveling in Japan such an easy and enjoyable experience. In cities like Osaka and Tokyo, there are all kinds of interesting things to do , including all kinds of themed cafes, unique museums where one can easily spend hours in, and beautiful parks perfect for people watching. Visiting Japan is also perhaps the best place to master the art of dining alone. Many solo travelers are afraid of eating alone, but in Japan, eating alone is completely normal. Thailand is famously a great place for solo female travelers because of how friendly the locals are and the overall abundance of other backpackers. Because it is literally the safest country in the world.

Iceland is ranked the #1 safest country in the world by Vision of Humanity , and I can attest, people left their cars running while they went grocery shopping! That’s how sure they are that nobody will steal their car. Iceland’s landscape is so unique and stunning, plus it’s great for a road trip . 7. Lisbon, Portugal

Feel like you’re part of a painting with pastel-colored buildings.

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is one of Europe’s most charismatic cities because of its beautiful hills, walkable layout, and the River Tagus. You’ll find ornate architecture that adds to the city’s vibrancy, and plenty of things to do like admire the hilly vistas from Alfama or the Tagus Estuary, pastel-colored buildings and the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge from St. George’s Castle . Just walk into any pub and within a few seconds someone will be talking to and joking around with you.

9. Berlin, Germany

Where you can truly be yourself.

Berlin is hands down, one of the coolest cities in the world. It’s like Brooklyn meets San Francisco with an LA vibe. Whatever you identify yourself as, you can easily find your tribe here. The city is filled with creative people, alternative things to do , and delicious food to devour . I never felt like the odd one out being a solo girl in the city, because people couldn’t care less (in a good way). You can dress like a unicorn and barely anyone would bat an eyelash. What’s not to love about that?

Quite possibly the safest and most scenic place to drive through, Québec is a special place with endless beauty to offer to its visitors. 12. Iguazu Falls, Argentina

…because waterfalls are best when shared.

Iguazu Falls is one of Argentina’s most-visited attractions and for good reason, I mean just look at that beauty. There are plenty of social places to stay, from mid-range hotels to hostels. A friend of mine told me he enjoyed his guesthouse so much that it took him three days to actually leave the hostel and go see the waterfall!

13. El Chaltén , Argentina

The most social place in Patagonia.

Much of Patagonia, particularly along the Carretera Austral , is remote and quiet, but if you’re solo, El Chaltén is the best mix of nature and social opportunities. The hostels are warm and friendly places, many of the hikes and campsites are well-loved, and it’s easy to meet others on the more trodden hikes. Far from the cat calls of Buenos Aires, I found El Chaltén to be a breath of fresh air.

14. The Riviera Maya, Mexico

…because having cenotes to yourself is magical.

Renting a car and heading from Cancún through Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and down to Bacalar is an epic road trip in itself. With pristine cenotes, white sand beaches, and Mayan ruins along the way, being able to take this trip at your own pace is liberating. Plus, Tulum and Bacalar are particularly social, meaning you can easily make friends and share the experience with other travelers.

15. Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Perfect for times when you don’t want to hike solo, but you’re solo.

Even if you start out alone in the 5-day W or the 8-day O Circuit trek in Torres del Paine National Park , you’ll come out of it with a bunch of new friends. For the same reasons that I loved the Annapurna Circuit, I love the social atmosphere amongst campers and hikers on this trek, particularly on the back, ‘O’, part of the trail where fewer hikers go and the crowds are more intimate. Refugio Dickson, in particular, was tons of fun thanks to the social rangers who played music and organized soccer games.

17. Coffee Bay, South Africa

…because Africa isn’t ‘scary’ after all.

Africa gets a bad rap as being a scary place to travel through, and while it’s important to take precautions ( here’s a list of them ), that doesn’t mean solo female travelers should write it off. I love how laidback Coffee Bay (and that whole coastline) is and how many other cool backpackers are always passing through. It’s easy to meet other people, go on long walks along the bluffs on the ocean, and take in gorgeous nature. While South Africa does have a pretty high crime rate, the bulk of it is in the cities . I loved the little towns like Coffee Bay where there weren’t many people or worries around at all.

18. Tofo, Mozambique

I maintain, Africa’s not that ‘scary’.

I love Tofo, Mozambique because of the type of adventurous and interesting people it attracts. It seems like most travelers in Mozambique have a cool story, and have arrived by word-of-mouth. There are only a couple of backpackers accommodations there (I stayed at Fatima’s), and scuba dive shops, but both are excellent places to meet other solo travelers.

19. Sunset Beach, Zanzibar

Beach Bums, Unite.

The white-sand beaches and baby blue waters of Zanzibar are legendary, and there’s so much to do there from diving to swimming, boating, and perusing the markets in Stone Town. It’s attractive for a lot of reasons. I remember laughing and dancing at the reggae bar there with Masai warriors dressed in regalia, local beach boys, and tourists from all over, loving how communal and inviting it was. Even if you go there solo, you can find your people. Just lock up your stuff in the safes, as there’s some petty crime.

20. New Zealand

Unlimited doses of nature.

New Zealand is made up of two gorgeous islands, North and South, and both are worth visiting for the iconic places , especially those that are off the beaten path . You could easily spend a year here exploring all that this beautiful slice of the earth has to offer. If you love nature, you’ll be in paradise with dolphin watching , hiking trails , glaciers , fjords and beaches. There’s something for the more adventurous too, like skydiving and bungee jumping!

…because its friendliness and hospitality is out of this world.

Remember travel before the Internet was so ubiquitous, before Instagram was even a thing, and before the birth of “influencer”? Allow me to introduce you to French Polynesia , where the locals immediately treat you as though they know you, the environment is preserved and treasured by the locals, and you can truly come back to yourself. While Bora Bora may make solo travelers feel a little bit out of place, French Polynesia has way more than that to offer, and I can almost guarantee you that you will have a wonderful time as a solo girl. This is a country I know I will be returning to again and again.

22. Montana , USA

…because it is so meditative and relaxing!

Montana is the type of place where the locals deeply value nature they’re blessed with, and where visitors can find abundant yoga classes, opportunities to walk among ancient trees, and ample opportunity to relax and reflect. Country roads make way for organic grocery stores, crystal shops, and artist galleries. I was lucky to be able to experience Montana through the locals’ eyes, and found many meditative things to do and places to go, including Crystal Sound Bowl Meditation and standup paddleboarding.

23. New Orleans , USA

Stay entertained!

New Orleans turned out to be one of the most enjoyable solo trips I’ve had. I spent a week in the Big Easy , and was kept entertained by the huge variety of things to do. Even when I dined alone in restaurants , the wait staff and the others were totally open to talk, and almost everyone I met had a suggestion for me on where to go next. I never felt like the odd woman out either as I sometimes do in beachy or couples’ destinations.

…because it’s for more than just honeymooners.

It’s crazy to think that Hawaii would be a good place to travel to solo, but I was delighted to find that there were tons of things for me to do even though I wasn’t on my honeymoon. 25. California, USA

You may just fill your heart with gold.

If you’ve never been to the Golden State , there’s a lot of places you’ve got to see . The state’s beautiful landscapes, views and national parks have inspired artists, poets, photographers and writers. Plus there’s a lot of fun and fame when it comes to Disney Land and the Hollywood Sign. I would love to go all these places! Thank you for picking places that aren’t just the typical “safe countries” lol because honestly most places are safe enough as long as you’re smart and there’s so much more to the world when you open up to places you wouldn’t normally consider. While we havent visited (yet) majority of places on this list we can definetely confirm that Phong Nha ke Bang felt as a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, people came across as genuinly kind if you have any troubles. The owners of the housestay we lodged at also kindly invited us to share their familly dinner and have a nice discussion about the area.

Love this list so much! I haven’t heard of so many of these places, so I’m extra intrigued! Patagonia is high on my list! Although I’m so not a camper, hence the reason I’ve avoided it thus far haha. Are there other ways to do Patagonia, maybe more glamping style? It’s so hard to find good info on it. Or maybe it’s that there is so much info that its overwhelming.

If you went to El Chalten you could stay in town and do day hikes without having to camp. Much of the rest of it isn’t glamping style, though. You can sometimes stay in the refugios, but they’re usually quite basic as well. Seems like a good place to try camping out. You might really like it!

This is an awesome list. I’ve been to quite a few of these by myself as well. I loved Pai and Don Det. Lucky for me, I met people to trek the Torres del Paine with, but it was still a surprisingly sociable experience. I never thought we’d be drinking boxed wine with other campers in the evenings!

This list is just what I needed to read right now. I’m a copywriter and have been trying to plan my next solo trip – did any of these spots stand out as good for working from? I always seem to pick spots with questionable Internet and want to make sure I get it right this next time!

I would just recommend getting a local SIM card. I’m sitting in Tanzania right now working from 3G and I’m not paying much for it. In Africa it’s a must, I’d say. China is OK but you need a VPN, and naturally the European destinations will have better Wifi

I just came back from Coffee Bay and I loved it! I’m from Johannesburg so I know what the crime is like but I felt completely safe in Coffee Bay. Everyone is super chilled and the beaches are beautiful and wild. Great list, by the way. I had a similar experience on Annapurna – hikers are just cool people 🙂

Me and my friends are planning to go to spain this January. We would love to see some nice beaches with clear water and some stunning scenery. We were thinking Majorca,Ibiza and Canary Island, we are up to some adventures and experience a great nightlife in our travel. Can anyone suggest any ideas or tips? Any help is kindly appreciated 🙂

i love that you picked El Chalten! I traveled there in 2019 solo and had a fabulous time. El Calafate and Puerto Madryn were great too. Another place I would recommend for solo travel is Australia. Everyone is very friendly and there’s tons of things to do.

I don’t usually set up a tripod in a super crowded area, particularly in Europe. I’d ask someone else to take the photo for me in that case – ideally someone who also has a camera and is taking photos too.

NOLA as a destination for solo female travelers?! I live here and for your info, we not only have the second highest murder rate in the country, but we also have the highest murder rate of women! There is not a neighborhood untouched by crime. I would never venture to walk the streets – ANY street (and natives will agree) – anywhere in NOLA by myself after dark; and during the day you should always be on your guard. You’re obviously not from here.

Hi Suzy, I had a great time solo in NOLA and walked around plenty alone, but it was always during the day and I agree, any city in the US would require one to be on their guard and is best avoided on foot at night.

Solo travel is a life-changing experience. Traveling alone gives you the freedom and flexibility to chart a path, curate a bucket list, and travel at your own pace. It's a chance to explore the world on your own terms — which can be super exciting (and even a little daunting!). 

That's where we come in! We've put together 12 travel tips to make your first solo trip a success. Keep reading to learn the ins and outs of traveling alone.

1. Have a Vision 

So, you know you want to travel solo. But where, when, and how? Now's the time to put pen to paper and map out your journey. Whether you're after a tropical mini-vacation, month-long excursion, or around-the-world adventure, a bit of brainstorming is a great first step.

Consider the following prompts to get yourself started:

• What kind of trip do you want to go on?  Are you looking for a trip that's curated and all-inclusive, adventurous and off-the-beaten-track, or somewhere in between?
• How long do you plan to be away from home?  Will you be gone for a weekend, a few weeks, or several months?
• Will you work while you're away?  Are you taking time off, or will you work remotely? 
• What's on your destination shortlist?  Which destinations make you excited to travel? Try starting with ten, then narrow down the list (and narrow it down again!).
• How many places will you visit?  Do you want to visit one country, multiple countries in a region, or several locations around the globe?
• What's your budget?  How much can you reasonably afford to spend? Are you looking for more budget-friendly options, or do you want to go all out?

Once you have your ideas down on paper, do some research to round out your plans. There are plenty of great resources to get you started, from travel blogs and online destination guides to travel agents and social media adventurers.

2. Build a Budget

Once you have a general itinerary, it's time to crunch some numbers. Take the following expenses into account when you build your solo travel budget:

• Transportation (flights, trains, buses, taxis, etc.)
• Accommodation (hotels, hostels, resorts, etc.)
• Food (meals out, groceries, snacks, etc.)
• Activities (tours, museum tickets, classes, etc.)
• Travel insurance (trust us, if anything unexpected occurs, you'll be glad you're covered)
• Exchange rates (keep an eye on these as they tend to fluctuate)
• Souvenirs and gifts (we recommend spending a little extra here to ensure you're shopping sustainably)

It's always a good idea to build a buffer into your budget. Have some extra cash available for emergencies and unexpected expenses. It's better to be prepared if there's a hitch in your travel plans.

3. Be Flexible 

Travel plans don't always go according to, well, plan. No matter how foolproof your itinerary is, there's always a chance you could experience a hiccup or two along the way. And that's okay! Some of the best solo travel stories come out of the unexpected. 

Try not to be too tied to your travel plans. Flights can get canceled, delays can happen, and trips can be extended or cut short. It's all part of the journey. Give your itinerary a bit of breathing room so you can adapt your trip as needed.

4. Pack Light

If it's your first time traveling solo, you may be tempted to overpack, so you're extra prepared. But remember, you'll be alone for most of your trip, and it'll be up to you to handle your luggage (and trust us, less is more!). With fewer bags, carrying your luggage, packing and unpacking between destinations, and navigating flights and public transportation will be easier. 

Unless you're off on a backpacking trip, a good rule of thumb is to bring a small carry-on and a day pack. You can keep your suitcase in your hotel room and use a smaller backpack to get around during the day. And you won't need to worry about waiting at the baggage carousel to collect your luggage at every stop along your route.

5. Consider Co-Living

A great way to ease into solo travel is to stay at a hostel or co-living space. Shared accommodation options are not only more budget-friendly, but they're also a great way to meet fellow travelers. Many include communal areas like kitchens, bars, and sitting rooms, where you can relax, chat, and swap travel tips. 

Co-living spaces tend to be geared more towards professionals and digital nomads who work remotely, and hostels cater to shorter-term travelers and backpackers. But staying in a hostel doesn't mean you have to sleep in a shared dorm. Most have private rooms (with private amenities), giving you space to relax and unwind. 

6. Take Tours and Classes

One of the best parts of solo travel is that your itinerary is all yours. You don't have to compromise on the experiences that will make your trip special. If a tour, class, or activity sparks your interest, dive in! You might even meet some like-minded travelers along the way.

Are you a history buff? Take a guided tour of the museums at your destination. If the outdoors is more your vibe, hire a guide to take you on a nature walk. Into food? Take a cooking class to learn the ins and outs of the local cuisine. No matter what you decide, the choice is 100% yours.

7. Make New Friends (Or Stay Solo)

Traveling solo is an exciting way to see the world. But it can also get lonely. If you're craving connection, there are many opportunities to make friends while you're away. The easiest way to meet fellow travelers is through co-living and co-working spaces, hotel happy hours, group tours, and in-person classes.

If you'd rather keep to yourself, that's okay too! Traveling alone is an excellent opportunity for reflection, introspection, and much-needed "you" time. If group tours aren't your thing, take a self-guided tour or hire a guide for a one-on-one experience. Either way, make the trip yours.

8. Learn the Local Language

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in a new culture is to learn the local language. If you have time and space in your budget, consider taking language lessons before your trip (or even while you're there!). At the very least, pick up a few useful phrases to help you get around and communicate with the locals. You'll be surprised how many doors open when you try!

A few basic words and phrases to learn are:

• Hello/goodbye
• Please/thank you
• Excuse me/pardon me
• Do you speak…?
• Where is…?
• How much is…?

Pro tip:  If you're somewhere your native language isn't spoken, Google Translate has a handy tool to scan and translate text. It's especially helpful for menus, pricing lists, and any documents needing to be translated.

9. Don't Skip Out on Experiences

Skipping experiences that feel meant for groups or couples can be tempting. But don't let that stop you. You don't have to be on a date to enjoy dinner at a fancy Parisian restaurant. Have you always dreamed of sleeping under the stars? Book that overnight safari in Tanzania. Want to learn the tango in Buenos Aires? Take a class or head to the closest  milonga . You won't regret it.

10. Be Safe

Staying safe should be a top priority whenever you travel, but especially when you travel solo. Keep the following tips in mind to keep yourself and your belongings safe:

• Take out travel insurance before you leave. Be sure you have a clear understanding of your coverage and how to use it. 
• Know the emergency numbers for your destination. 
• Be aware of your surroundings, and don't leave your belongings unattended.
• Tell the hotel concierge where you're headed. Take their number in case you get lost or need assistance.
• Pack a portable charger in case your phone runs out of battery.
• Trust your instincts. Don't be afraid to jump ship if something doesn't feel right.
• Keep friends and family in the loop. Give them your itinerary before you leave, and let them know if it changes.

1. Join a Walking Tour

I’ve yet to visit a good European city that didn’t have a walking tour to join, and usually, they’re free. (Big score for budget backpackers.)

Occasionally, they can be a drag, but I’ve found that if you book them through your hostel, the guides are usually enthusiastic while being equally informational. And best of all, you’ll be joined by other travelers making it one of the best ways to make friends .

You’ll spend the morning getting a feel for the city, and I love doing this on my first day in a new place because the guides can give you some local tips on all the best places to eat, drink, and party. You’ll see all the must-do’s and have a good idea of how to get around the place.

2. Check off Iconic Landmarks

Whether you’re checking off the world’s wonders or just want to drink some wine under the Eiffel Tower, Europe is the perfect destination for travellers who love sightseeing. The continent is full of some of the world’s most iconic landmarks and will definitely keep you busy. (Get ready to be walking 20,000+ steps a day!)

Travelling solo allows you to go to the ones that are high on your list without having to worry about someone else’s schedule. Plus, you can take as many pictures and selfies as your heart desires without being judged!

3. Go on a Pub Crawl

If you’re staying at a hostel , more often than not, someone will be hosting a pub crawl. And let me tell you, Europeans do it differently. There is a high possibility you’ll be out all night long and an even higher possibility of having an epic adventure through the city.

Since they’re organised through the hostels, you’ll be around other travellers about your age, and it’s the perfect way to loosen up and meet other people. Entry into the clubs and bars is usually free, and you might get a shitty shot of absinthe or bottom-shelf liquor on the house.

(If you’re on a budget, drink up. If hangovers are the bain of your existence… well, buy something else. Ha!)

4. Take a Cooking Class

Some of the world’s best food comes out of Europe (and some of the worst, I’m looking at you, beans and toast). And while it might not be in your budget to eat out for every meal, taking a cooking class is one of the best ways to experience local culture and flavours.

Sometimes, you’ll get to go shopping at the local market or step into an old grandma’s home that smells like freshly baked bread. Not only will you learn how to make delicious dishes, but you’ll also get a glimpse into the daily life of locals. It’s one of my favourite ways to meet other travellers who are interested in the same things as me.

5. Eat at Local Spots

I can’t recommend eating at local spots enough. I know it can be difficult to break out of your comfort zone and dine alone, but after a few times, it’ll grow on you.

I’ve come to love heading out to a local spot and getting to interact with the staff and other guests, grabbing some food. Trust me, they can tell you’re a tourist. And for the most part, they will be super kind and help you if you’re confused about the menu or any other customs you aren’t familiar with.

Plus, eating at local spots is typically much cheaper than eating at tourist hotspots. You’ll also get to taste authentic dishes that are so freaking delicious you’ll be dreaming of them for ages.

6. Get Lost in the World’s Best Museums

Museums are the perfect way for solo travellers to spend their day. And the ones in Europe are the BEST.

I seriously don’t think it gets better than the Louvre , the British Museum , or the Rijksmuseum . Not only are they a treasure trove of historical and cultural artefacts, but you also get to explore at your own pace and take in all the beauty without feeling rushed.

7. Attend a Music Festival

If you love music, then you’ve come to the right place. Europe is home to some of the best festivals in the world . I don’t know what it is or why they’re so much better than the rest of the world but prepare for the best vibes and the best shows (and the best drugs, if you’re trying to turn up.)

I’ve definitely planned a solo trip to Europe solely around Tomorrowland, and it was one of my best travel experiences ever. Just make sure to research the festival beforehand and plan accordingly because some tickets sell out super fast.

And don’t be afraid of going alone. You’ll meet loads of other travellers and locals. Plus, it’s a music festival, so everyone is there to have a good time.

I know. I find it tragic as well.

But there are a few places that are just better suited for solo travellers in Europe, and here they are! The top 5 solo destinations in Europe.

Prague is a backpacker haven, making it the perfect destination in Europe for solo travellers. If you go to Prague and don’t make any friends… well, maybe the problem is you.

Ha, just kidding. But seriously, the city has always been known for its amazing nightlife, cheap eats and drinks, and friendly locals.

The city is absolutely gorgeous, and whether you’re planning to stay in Prague in the summer or the winter, the city’s charm is breathtaking. You’ll find a little bit of everything while visiting the city, you can learn about the history on a walking tour (I recommend the ones in the old town.)

Getting lost in the cobblestone streets is like a medieval fairytale. The Museum of Communism is also a great activity for solo travellers, as you’ll get to learn about a really interesting part of history, and you can even join a tour if you want to meet people.

Fun fact: Prague is also one of the safest cities in Europe, making it the perfect destination for solo female travelers .

The Prague Dream Hostel is one of my favourite stays in the city. It’s super warm and cosy in the common areas, so meeting friends is a breeze. It’s also located about a 20-minute walk from the old town, which is perfect for exploring on your own.

History, culture, and nightlife collide in Berlin, making it a must-visit for solo travellers in Europe. Berlin was the first European city I ever visited, and I’m not sure that was the smartest idea, but it definitely prepared me for all the cities I would visit after it.

As someone who grew up quite sheltered, the nightlife in Berlin had its way with me. It was a hell of a time. And if you’re into the techno scene, my god, you’re about to have the time of your life.

But Berlin has so much more to offer than just its party scene. The city is filled with museums, galleries, and historic sites that are a must-see for any solo traveller interested in culture and history.

One of my favourite things to do in Berlin was biking around the city, admiring the street art and architecture. Joining some sort of tour, whether it be biking or walking, is a must. While walking alone is fine, hearing the stories and learning more about the city and the war really adds to the experience.

If you’re looking for budget-friendly accommodation in Berlin, I highly recommend checking out the Circus Hostel . It’s located in a great area with plenty of restaurants and bars nearby, and they offer a variety of room options, including dorms and privates. Plus, they host events like pub crawls and walking tours making it easy to meet other travelers.

Everyone dreams of visiting Amsterdam on their European tour, and for good reason. The city is one of the coolest and most progressive destinations in Europe, making it perfect for solo travellers.

The best way to explore Amsterdam is by bike. There is some crazy statistic that there are more bikes than people, and after visiting—I believe it.

And one of my favourite things about visiting Amsterdam is literally everyone speaks English. So if you’re feeling a bit paranoid about being able to communicate, well, Amsterdam is the perfect choice for you.

Just prepare for the bluntness. They don’t mean to be rude—they’re just honest.

Unfortunately, loads of expats have moved to the city, pushing out a lot of the Dutchies. And in the summer, it’s pretty much a melting pot of travellers. This is sad because you miss out on a lot of the local culture that made Amsterdam so unique to begin with.

But it’s still an epic destination in Europe, and make sure to stay at Flying Pig Downtown . The staff are amazing. And with all of the awesome common areas, you can hang out, drink a beer, smoke some green, and meet some other travellers.

For so long, Portugal was flying under the radar, and then, what seemed like out of nowhere, it became everyone’s go-to destination in Europe. And they weren’t wrong.

Travelling to Portugal is awesome just about any time of year, and Lisbon is one of the best cities for solo travellers. Unless you don’t like hills… because Lisbon is all hills.

The city has a chill vibe with lots of street art, great food, and plenty of opportunities to meet fellow travellers. Head to the famous Time Out Market for some food and drinks, or take a free walking tour to learn about the history and culture. You can also do some pretty sick day trips from Lisbon like visiting the beautiful beaches of Cascais or the gorgeous castles of Sintra.

If you’re looking for a party place, stay at Yes! Lisbon . This hostel is full of social butterflies, and they put on one heck of a bar crawl every few nights.

Barcelona is one of the most iconic cities in all of Europe, so obviously, it landed a spot on this list. You can visit the ever-unfinished Sagrada Familia or roam the charming streets of the Gothic Quarter.

Barcelona is also known for its delicious food scene and buzzing nightlife. And if you’re into beaches, there are plenty of those too!

Although Barcelona isn’t exactly the cheapest place in Europe, there is lots of opportunity here to bring the costs down. You’ll find cheap flights here from many corners of the world and public transport is easy-peasy.

Barcelona is every solo traveller’s dream come true. I don’t know if it’s because of the weather or the blunt locals (well, most of them have moved to Barcelona, but we will still call them locals), but it’s just so easy to make friends here.

Every morning, you’ll find the cafes full of people enjoying breakfast and a chat, and every night, the streets are packed with young people grabbing dinner on their way out to explore the nightlife. And from what I experienced, just about every night you can party.

Here are a handful of my favourite travel apps that helped me backpack through Europe immensely. Having these apps in your arsenal will give you superpowers. Trust me.

• Google Maps – Do I need to explain this one?
• Booking.com – Easily the best app for accommodation.
• Hostelworld – This app is perfect for finding the best hostels in Europe .
• Google Translate – Such an easy way to speak every language.
• Couchsurfing – Backpacking Europe isn’t always the cheapest, and downloading the couch surfing app will help you save some money and meet locals.
• Interrail Planner App – If you’re planning on travelling by train in Europe , this app will be your best friend. It helps you plan out your route, shows you the different train options and schedules, and even lets you book tickets.
• Flixbus – But if you plan to travel by bus to save some money, Flixbus is a great option. Their app makes it easy to book tickets and navigate different routes.
• Rick Stevens Audio Europe – This audio guide app offers guided walking tours in different European cities. You’ll get insider tips and historical background information while exploring independently.
• Holafly – An e-SIM application that allows you to download a data-only SIM card without installing a physical card.

Facebook groups are also a great shout for solo backpackers, and so is the Hostelworld chat for your location. My best tip though? Get off yo’ phone and go chat to people!

Stop stressing about your phone service when you travel abroad.

Roam around Europe, but leave the roaming charges for the n00bies.

So this is where it gets tricky lumping all of Europe together into safety tips. Each country definitely varies when it comes to levels of crime. So make sure to look up the countries you’re headed to before and do some research on their travel warnings. With that said, here are a few tips to help keep you safe while exploring solo in Europe.

Pickpockets are in just about every city, so just be smart about your belongings. Don’t wear fancy jewellery. Zip your bags and keep them in front of you, and maybe even get a necklace thing for your phone to make sure it doesn’t get snatched.

If you’re going out or bar hopping, don’t get hammered. I know it feels a bit like a theme park as you travel from city to city. But you aren’t untouchable, and creeps exist everywhere.

So don’t drink too much. If you are a female solo traveller, try to go with a group of friends and don’t wander off alone. Like anywhere, Europe is safe to travel alone but you must keep your wits about you.

If this is your first big solo trip, don’t worry, these tips will help you have a killer time in Europe and could also save your ass.

• Travel light , and pick a trusty backpack over a rolling suitcase.
• Book hostels . It’s the BEST way to travel solo. You’ll meet awesome people and they’re often nicer than hotels.
• If you’re travelling on a tight budget , you can get cheap transport tickets if you book in advance .
• Free walking tours are a must ! They’re a great way to meet people and explore the local areas and, well, they’re free!
• Leave your heels at home . Good travel shoes are essential.
• Always have some Euros on hand. Cash is still king.
• Don’t just visit cities … please. Countries are more than just their tourist hotspots and Instagram-famous locations.
• With that being said— do the touristy things . There is a reason everyone loves going to the Eiffel Tower or seeing the Colosseum. Don’t leave wanting more.
• Get European travel insurance . You never know what can happen, and we want you safe, not hundreds of dollars in debt and unable to get home safely.

My final tip would be to just go for it and also to go with the flow. Nothing ever unfolds exactly how you imagined it, but this is the beauty of travel. We love the mystery of surprises, don’t we?

When you lift your finger, you’ll have to input your 4-digit pin to cancel the alarm. If you don’t input your pin, the app will send an alert to the local police and share your location.

30. Google Translate

Google Translate can be a lifesaver if you don’t speak the local language and you find yourself needing to communicate with someone or to ask for help. Download the app for easier access, or just use the browser.

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

If you're interested in hiking part of the Appalachian Trail, hit the region around Harpers Ferry. The visitor center is considered the "psychological midpoint" of the trail, and there are a number of scenic day hikes in the area. The town itself — which boasts small-town charm — is part of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and has an antique shop (called The Gilded Flea) and a historic candy shop.

South Bend, Indiana

College towns make for perfect weekend getaways for solo travelers, with lively downtowns and impressive museums — and South Bend is no exception. There's a three-story automotive museum, two art museums, a gorgeous neo-Gothic church, the Morris Performing Arts Center and a scenic riverfront park to fill your itinerary. Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International features studio staterooms on select ships that range in size from 101 to 199 square feet. These solo accommodations include interior rooms, virtual balcony staterooms and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. The cabins do not carry the single supplement fee singles encounter when booking other types of staterooms, making them an attractive option when traveling alone.

Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. Atlas Ocean Voyages

Luxury line Atlas Ocean Voyages offers single cruisers 183 square feet of beautifully appointed space in solo accommodations that come without single supplement fees. These ocean view staterooms feature a queen bed, a panoramic picture window, a private spa bathroom with a rain shower and body jets, a stocked minifridge replenished daily with personal favorites, and other luxurious amenities. Single guests can also book other stateroom or suite categories with single supplements starting at 50% of the double occupancy price.

The line's three intimate yacht-style cruise ships – World Navigator, World Traveller and the new World Voyager, whose inaugural season begins in Antarctica in November 2023 – are all-inclusive . Meals at all the dining venues, premium beverages and wines, gratuities, culturally immersive excursions, and more are included in the fare. With fewer than 200 guests on board, there's an atmosphere of conviviality on these ships – especially when exploring remote destinations with like-minded and adventurous travelers during expeditions in Antarctica and the Arctic.

The line's two newest vessels, Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent (set to debut in late 2023), each boast 32 single staterooms with an Infinite Veranda. In addition, Celebrity Apex has 24 solo cabins, and Celebrity Edge features 16 staterooms for individual guests. These one-person accommodations offer a minimum of 131 square feet of space and the same upscale amenities you'll find in other category staterooms on their ships. Solo guests can look for special promotions where the single supplement is waived on select Celebrity voyages throughout the year.

Its superyacht-style ships – Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady – offer 40 interior cabins ranging in size from 105 to 177 square feet. There are also six Sea View staterooms with portholes boasting between 130 to 190 square feet of space. These Insider and Sea View cabins are designed and priced for single travelers, with amenities like high-tech mood lighting and roomy rain showers. The line also runs promotions where solo cruisers can book double occupancy staterooms without paying a single supplement.

Activities and festival-like entertainment around the ships foster fast friendships. Diners will enjoy the interactive experience at Gunbae, the lively Korean barbecue venue. The "grog walk" is a fun pub stroll where solo sailors can join fellow mates while sipping and snacking their way through all the signature bars. Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways' river and small-ship cruises traverse waterways around the world, including in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. The company waives the single supplement on a selection of staterooms, including its Panorama Suites, on select European and Asia departures. The company recommends booking early as the specially priced cabins do sell out. Solo travelers make up about 10% of the passengers on this river cruise line .

Avalon's fleet of Suite Ships operates in Europe and Southeast Asia and features cabins with a minimum of 172 square feet. About 80% of the staterooms are Panorama Suites, which have 200 feet of living space, beds with a view and the river cruise industry's only open-air balcony. With Avalon excursions, solo cruisers have opportunities to meet like-minded guests during immersive tours, cooking classes, wine tastings, yoga or fitness classes, biking or hiking trips, and more. Single guests can choose to dine at tables for just two people or ones that can accommodate up to eight passengers.

Two single occupancy staterooms are available on four of AmaWaterways' river cruise ships: AmaDolce, AmaDante, AmaLyra and AmaCello. These accommodations do not have single supplement fees. Solo cruisers can also book staterooms with a 20% single supplement on select sailings in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that this pricing does not apply to certain stateroom categories and suites.)

With the friendly, small-ship atmosphere, solo cruisers will find it comfortable to socialize with other passengers and the crew. Azamara's special offers for solo travelers include reduced single supplements of 25% to 50% of the double occupancy rate on select sailings. The line's four midsized sister ships – carrying no more than 700 passengers – are mostly all-inclusive. Amenities included in the cruise fare include most meals; standard spirits, wines and beers; bottled water, soft drinks, and specialty teas and coffees; shuttle service in port; gratuities; and complimentary AzAmazing Evenings ashore or Destination Celebration experiences on the ship. Dining at the two specialty restaurants is an additional cost unless guests have accommodations in the Club World Owner's Suites, Club Ocean Suite or Club Continent Suite.

Single guests on Azamara cruises will find events during the sailing and venues around the ship where you can mix and mingle with other solo travelers and chat with the friendly crew. Guests can choose between a spacious Britannia Inside or Britannia Oceanview cabin, or opt for a larger stateroom with a single supplement. For a little "me time" pampering while on board, solos will appreciate 24-hour room service, complimentary Penhaligon's toiletries and a chilled bottle of sparkling wine. Single guests will also be invited to get-togethers. You can either dine alone at venues around the ship such as the main dining room or choose to share a table with other passengers.

Travel is geared mainly to serve customers as couples. But for a variety of reasons, lots of travelers are not in a coupled relationship. In my case, I’m a widower; others include the never married, the divorced or separated, and even couples with diverse interests. Over the years, the travel business has given short shrift to these travelers, but suppliers have recently taken a closer look at what they see as a big potential source of business.

For years, some tour operators and cruise lines have been positioning themselves as “singles travel” specialists, but mostly their approach has been to match up singles into couples. True solo travel is different—true solo travelers do not what to share accommodations with strangers or even with friends who they might want to consider. They want sole occupancy of whatever arrangement they make.

If you’re traveled at all, you’ve seen that a lot of pricing is based on “per person, double occupancy,” or PPDO:

Most modern hotel rooms are designed to accommodate at least two people with two single, double, or queen beds; hotels charge the same rate for either one or two occupants.

Similarly, the vast majority of cruise cabins are set up to accommodate up to four people – two comfortably in separate small beds, combinable into a double, and two more uncomfortably in pull-down bunk beds.

Railroads charge each traveler the same for basic rail fare, but for compartments on overnight trains such as Amtrak’s long-distance trains, the price is the same for one as for two.

Although not promoted as such, rental cars are de facto PPDO: Adding a second passenger (or more) adds nothing to the daily or weekly rent.

Even with the prevalence of PPDO pricing, solo travelers have reasonable options:

Hotels. Although most new or recent hotels are designed for couples, small, older hotels in Europe often have single rooms designed for just one occupant, as do small Japanese business hotels. Daily rates are usually substantially less than but more than half the double-room rates. On my recent trips, I’ve found comfortable single rooms at small family-owned hotels in Brussels, Grindelwald, and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, as well as in Japan. But most of the time, I have to settle for the usual double rate.

Tours. Despite a growing number of self-styled “Solo” tour operators, most fall back on the formula that “we’ll match you with a suitable roommate, and we won’t charge extra if we can’t find one.” But if you really want accommodations by yourself, you pay a single supplement. What may be close to everybody’s favorite tour operator, Road Scholar ( roadscholar.org/); formerly Elderhostel but open to travelers of any age) posts a pull-down options menu that includes “solo travelers only” filter. The choices are limited, but they’re genuinely for solo travelers. Google “solo travel” to find other outfits worth a look.

Cruise. For a long time, cruise lines ignored the solo traveler, relying instead on stiff single supplements for double cabins. But some of the newer liners feature cabins designed for one person. The good folks at Cruise Critic have compiled and posted a list ( cruisecritic.com/articles/which-ships-have-solo-cabins ) of cruise lines and cruise ships with true single cabins. Norwegian leads the pack in number of rooms and number of cabins per ships, but the other lines are catching up. Carnival, the biggest player, seems to be lagging the trend, but it does have a few on Cunard. Unfortunately, other than Cunard, no high-end lines yet make the list.

Trains. I don’t know any way to hack PPDO compartment prices on Amtrak, and Amtrak seldom puts them on sale. Sorry.

No Supplement Deals. Historically, tour operators and cruise lines have charged solo travelers the dreaded “single supplement” to occupy an accommodation designed for a couple. The supplement usually ranges from 50 percent more to double the PPDO rate. They’ve catered to solo travelers mainly through occasional “no single supplement” promotions, often for departures they believe are not likely to sell out – which means the best deals are last-minute deals. You can still find those.

Tracee Ellis Ross is packing her bags and inviting audiences to join her solo travel adventures with the new Roku Original series “Tracee Travels.”

The series will chronicle the award-winning actor (“Girlfriends,” “Black-ish,” and most recently the Oscar-winning film “American Fiction”) and Pattern CEO and founder as she “meticulously, laboriously, and sometimes ridiculously prepares for and travels solo to spectacular locations.” The series will shoot later this year, following Ross as she “charts her own path, exploring the intersection of beauty, fashion, design, food and culture at each stop.”

The docuseries is produced by Ross’ Joy Mill Entertainment and Artists First, with Ross and E. Brian Dobbins serve as executive producers. Adriana Ambriz and Caroline Soss serve as co-executive producers. The series is overseen by Olivia LaRoche, Roku Originals’ head of alternative originals. The first season’s locations will be announced at a later date.

“No one travels like Tracee Ellis Ross — when it comes to going solo in style, she’s the expert,” adds Brian Tannenbaum, Roku Media’s head of originals. “We can’t wait to partner with Tracee, Joy Mill Entertainment and Artists First to take viewers on the trip of a lifetime and witness the delight of self-discovery and independence.”

“Tracee Travels” will debut exclusively on the Roku Channel in 2025.

More evidence surfaces that Beats Solo 4 are coming soon

On Tuesday, AppleInsider uncovered new syncing animations in the visionOS 1.2 beta 3. Four looping video files and a PLIST file included in the beta point to an imminent release of Beats Solo 4.

This isn't the first bit of evidence, either. In February, several references to Solo 4 had been discovered within the release candidate build of iOS 17.4.

In early April, a new FCC listing surfaced, hinting that Apple would be gearing up to release the Beats Solo 4 very soon.

After an eight-year wait since the debut of Beats Solo 3, the new Beats Solo 4 is on the horizon. While it may not boast any visibly significant redesigned features, it is expected to support Spatial Audio, a feature that could significantly enhance the audio experience.

The code also hints at a color range of at least black, blue, and pink, offering a variety of options to suit different styles.

The rumored price is $199.99, identical to Beats Solo 3. It's not precisely clear when they will launch or ship.

How to Fly Your Kid Solo, Free of Stress

For many parents and guardians, putting a child on a flight alone may seem terrifying. Belligerent passengers, delays, turbulence: All loom large in a caregiver’s imagination.

Life sometimes leaves no other option. Hudson Crites , 17, of Marshall, Va., was 10 when he started flying unaccompanied to visit his father in Kansas and later Georgia, said his mother, Chelsea Tippett. But the extra attention from airline staff made Hudson “feel special,” Ms. Tippett recalls. Other than a single tarmac delay, he has had no problems.

On rare occasions, children have had troubling experiences. In December, Spirit Airlines accidentally flew a 6-year-old to Orlando, Fla., instead of the intended destination of Fort Myers. Spirit apologized, fired the gate agent responsible and offered reimbursement to the boy’s grandmother for her travel to Orlando. But while the boy was unharmed, his grandmother expressed worry that he had been kidnapped .

If you decide to fly your child unaccompanied, you’ll discover that each airline has its own procedures, fees and routes open to children. While some may find the process complicated, flying alone may be exciting for your child, instilling some independence. Here’s what you need to know.

Before you book, know the process

Regardless of the airline or route, flying an unaccompanied minor differs from an adult or a family catching a flight. Airlines require a trusted pre-authorized adult to be at the departure and arrival gates, and will ask you at booking to provide contact information for those adults. They will also need to present identification at the terminals.

The journey begins at the originating airport’s airline ticket counter. There, airline staff will check your identification and check in the child, perhaps handing them a lanyard or wristband to wear. The agents will provide you with a pass to get through security with your child. You will accompany them to the gate, where you will hand them off to a gate agent. You must stay at the gate until the plane takes off.

In the air, the flight crew will keep watch — but will not babysit, or sit with, your child. If the flight has a connection, a crew member will walk your child off the plane and a gate agent will take him or her to the next gate.

At the arrival airport, the child will be handed off by staff to the authorized guardian or parent who should have already checked in at the ticket counter with proper identification, gone through security with their gate pass and be waiting at the gate.

Choosing an airline and paying an extra fee

Before purchasing a ticket, experts advise you to consider an airline’s on-time performance. “Solid on-time performance is hard-earned, and signals a carrier that has tight control of its operation,” said the Ask the Pilot author, Patrick Smith. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics has those numbers.

Booking procedures vary. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines require you to call. United Airlines allows bookings online. JetBlue Airways does online bookings, too, but asks for three printed copies of its forms upon arrival at the airport.

International flights may call for a notarized consent letter describing where the child is traveling, with whom they’ll stay and how long they’ll be there.

On top of the ticket fare, flying an unaccompanied minor can be pricey.

Southwest Airlines charges $100 one way for each child, regardless of distance. Alaska Airlines charges $50 per child if the flight is nonstop; a connection adds $25. On Delta, one $150 fee will cover up to four children, and American’s $150 covers all siblings, with no cap on number. United charges $150 for one child, or two children flying together.

Restrictions: There are plenty

U.S. carriers allow children to fly as unaccompanied minors once they turn 5 and before they turn 18. But regardless of your child’s age, make sure he or she is ready by discussing the trip details and your expectations of their behavior. No policy can replace your judgment.

The low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air don’t allow unaccompanied minors, Other airlines have restrictions that, in the broadest terms, differentiate between young children and teenagers. American and Delta restrict children under 8 from routes requiring connections. Both airlines allow children between 8 and 14 to take some connecting flights.

On American, no unaccompanied minor is allowed to take an overnight flight requiring a connection, or a flight that includes a connection on its final leg that also happens to be the last such flight that day (“unless it’s the only flight,” the company adds). Minors are not allowed on code-share flights.

United and Delta have similar rules. Southwest, JetBlue and Spirit don’t allow unaccompanied minors on connecting flights.

JetBlue prohibits minors from flying to Europe, and limits the number of unaccompanied minors in one party to three. Spirit does not allow children on flights to Central or South America. Southwest doesn’t allow children on any international flights. American, United and Delta let minors fly abroad, but restrictions on connections, code-shares and overnights limit options.

American and Delta allow children to opt out of flying as unaccompanied minors once they turn 15 — that is, the child can fly without the assistance of airline personnel. JetBlue ends unaccompanied minor service at 14, while Alaska has an opt-out option at 13. Southwest boasts the lowest opt-out age: 12.

However, you should be able to accompany your child to the gate even if they’re not flying unaccompanied. American requires that you do so for teens between the ages of 15 and 17, even if they’ve opted out.

What to pack

Have a plan to head off your child’s hunger, boredom and thirst. If they are older, make sure they have emergency money and a charged phone.

When her two daughters, then 9 and 11, flew to Denver, Joey Conover of Charlottesville, Va., had a long list for their carry-ons.

“Pack a backpack with iPad, headphones, lightweight book to read, a pad of paper and colored pencils (markers might smear), a small travel game, water bottle (bring empty and fill in airport), snacks, some kind of surprise fidget or animals to play with, hoodie, and a lovey,” she wrote in an email.

“Write your name and phone number on the inside of their arm in Sharpie and put a parent’s business card in a luggage tag on both suitcase and backpack,” Ms. Conover said. (A sheet of paper with all their identification, and their guardian’s contact information, also works. Simply stick in an easy-to-access pocket.)
