Getting there.

Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas is the main airport of Madrid, which is just 20 minutes or so from the city center or el centro . With 4 different terminals, it comes with quite a bit of shopping and other facilities. You can easily score a flight directly to Madrid from the vast majority of airports around the US as most of the major airlines serve this route.

The main carriers are Iberia , American Airlines, and Delta Airlines. In fact, if you’re flying from NYC or O’Hare in Chicago, you can expect direct flights in the off-season to cost you around 500 bucks!

Getting Around

The metro fares depend on which neighborhood you’re in, however, they’ll pretty consistently range from 1.50 to 2 euros (approx. $1.75 to $2.30). If you plan on using it frequently throughout your visit, you can also opt for a Tourist Card. These are either 1-day, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7-day quantities. We did the math, and they almost always are more budget-friendly. Just remember that it is open from 6am to 1:30am.

Bus – Available from 6am to 11:30pm, Monday through Friday, and 7am to 11pm on the weekends, the bus also covers a good amount of the city. However, there are also night buses that start at 11:30pm and take over into the late hours! This is perfect if you want to catch a rave, a late-night drink and dinner, or simply want to see the city from a different view.

Taxi – Taxis are always an option, and hailing them off the street is pretty simple. Throughout various tourist destinations, you’ll also often see them lining up just waiting for customers. Remember, that the ones who have lit up green lights on the roofs are those that are available. Try to ride only with the city’s official cabs, which are white with a red diagonal stripe on the sides, along with Madrid’s emblem.

Alternatively, you can use a ride-sharing app. Uber does operate in the city, so this is an option.

Tip: Always make sure that the taximeter is on as soon as your trip starts! Some drivers will keep it off to try and scam some extra cash from you. If your driver doesn’t speak English, you can ask them to turn it on like this: “Disculpe, se puede prender el meter, por favor?”.

Where to Stay

Madrid consists of many different neighborhoods, with quite a few being very attractive for tourists. No matter what your budget is, you’ll realistically find somewhere that works for you.

• For the luxe and plush, opt for Salamanca . In fact, the neighborhood’s Calle de Serrano is often compared to New York City’s Upper East Side, and referred to as “The Golden Mile”.
• If you’re on a budget, head to Lavapies or Chueca . Both areas are very affordable, and are easy to navigate by foot.
• If you’re traveling with children/the entire family, check out Barrio de Las Letras , or Sol-Gran Via . Sol-Gran Via is the area located between Puerta del Sol and Gran Via. This is the center of Madrid’s “cultural spots”. It features all kinds of theaters, boutiques, along with many very important buildings and unique architecture.
• If you’re planning on going out to bars, clubs, and other nightlife scenes, check out Chueca , or La Latina . Chueca is a lively area full of people from all walks of life, all ages, and interests. The cafes and masterly-crafted cocktails here are incredible. La Latina is also very high-energy, and you’ll find many little markets, tapas bars, and “block parties”.
• If you’re top priority in Madrid is to try the most delicious food possible, you can stay anywhere in El Centro . This is actually one of the safest, most pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods in the city. Not to mention, the elaborate architecture, palaces, etc. are some of the most impressive in the entire country.

As you can imagine, Madrid has some of the best food in the world. Let’s go ahead and look at some of the city’s top restaurants and eateries.

Saddle – Saddle is absolutely an artistic experience. It’s high-class, very elegant, yet intimate rather than stuffy. By combining modern-day with classic techniques, you’ll find this place to be refined yet varied. All on one floor, you’ll find private rooms and an expansive dining room with beautiful views.

Cruz Blanca de Vallecas – Consistently award-winning, Cruz Blanca de Vallecas offers Spanish food, placing tradition at the forefront of the operation. With international standards, this restaurant es made to make you feel like you’re coming home. Just make sure you book far in advance, as it can be booked up to 3 months at times!

Casa Benigna – If you go to Spain, you have to try paella. It’s just an unspoken rule. For excellent paella, make sure you head to Casa Benigna . The rice-based dish features arroz negro, squid ink, beans, meat, and more.

El Cisne Azul – Located in Chueca, El Cisne Azul is known for their wild mushrooms, with dishes that incorporate them like grilled boletus with foie gras and mushroom carpaccio. If you’re not a fan of mushrooms, you’re in the clear, as they also offer grilled meats and other dishes.

El Meson del Boqueron – El Meson del Boqueron offers basically the best callos a la madrileña we’ve had. With tripe, morcilla, and chorizo, it’s definitely packed with flavor and is perfect for any kind of weather. The restaurant itself is very captivating, with a kind of gothic flair that makes it look like it’s been around for hundreds of years.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Nightlife in Madrid is booming, and you can find everything from a flamenco club to massive electronic music raves.

Fabrik – If you’re looking for said rave, head to Fabrik. This two-floor club has a whopping 7,000-person capacity and a beautiful sound system to accommodate their world-famous DJs. Kapital is located in El Centro, and is legendary throughout all of Europe. The enormous club features 7 floors – each with a different theme. Goya Social Club is a nice alternative if you aren’t ready for 7 floors of partying. It has a capacity of just 200 people, though the more intimate environment is perfect for its house, deep house, tech house, and sometimes techno artists.

Get out of your comfort zone and into a tablao , or flamenco bar. Here, you can see or even participate in dancing flamenco while enjoying some delicious eats and fine drinks. Corral de la Moreria is our top pick, and is one of the oldest tablaos around. Torres Bermejas is another hot choice, with their traditional cuisine and famous flamenco.

For innovative cocktails, look no further than Salmon Guru . It has an interesting name, but even more interesting drinks. The neon décor is very flashy and fun for taking photos. Diego Cabrera owns this one along with Viva Madrid : another one of our favorites. Viva Madrid has an almost opposite take on Salmon Guru, being a historic tavern with classic cocktails. Varsovia Cocktail & Bar is charming, and one of the top picks for a good vermouth and tapas.

No matter where you go in Madrid, you’ll likely be able to find many pretty, outdoor bars and cafes, karaoke bars, and live music.

While many people may think that Madrid is constantly warm, this is not the case at all. Their summers are typically pretty short, hot (around 99 degrees Fahrenheit), and dry. This is great if you aren’t a fan of humidity. However, the wintertime can get very cold and cloudy, dipping down to 23 degrees Fahrenheit at times! Try visiting from late June to late August for the best weather – just remember that most other European countries also have vacation from school at this time and things can get crowded.

Attractions

If you enjoy Mother Nature and serene little getaways, you’ll love Buen Retiro Park and the Crystal Palace. El Parque del Retiro is filled with lush flora, and is preened and maintained wonderfully. Covering over 140 hectares, it will originally made for the Count Duke of Olivares back in the 17 th century! El Palacio de Cristal consists of cast iron and glass, and sits in front of a flowing fountain and reflecting pool. Parques and fountains are plentiful in Madrid however, so you can really take your pick.

Aside from the Prado Museum , Madrid has many other architectural stunners like the Royal Palace and Gardens. Drawing many similarities to Paris Versailles, this palace is still used as the official residence of the king of Spain. Here, you can also catch some artwork by Velazquez, Goya, El Greco, and the rest of the crew. However, all kinds of palaces and interesting architecture covers Madrid.

If you’re a history buff, you have to head over to Puerta del Sol, which is where the old city gate stood. It’s been the center of many important events throughout history, such as the Spanish resistance to Napoleon back in the early 1800’s, and in 1931 when the Second Republic was proclaimed! Today, it has all kinds of fun shops and trendy cafes. If you like wine then be sure to do a wine tasting tour while you are in Madrid .

Once you arrive to your destination, try and walk as much as you can (within reason). Obviously, this is counting on your area being safe to walk around, which all of the neighborhoods we’ve mentioned are. This is the best way to get a feel for the city, and you can see everything up close. Plus, if you ever get tired, Madrid has an excellent public transportation system to help you out.

History of Madrid

What makes madrid so special.

The ever-evolving story of Madrid and the many cultures who have resided there since the 2nd century B.C. offer quite the historical background for Madrid being such a magical place for adventures.

Historians tell us that Madrid’s name derives from the originally Moorish city established in the mid-9th century which was first named Mayrit “the land of abundant waters” and later became Madrid after changing hands several times.

In the early 11th century, the Christian king Alfonso VI of Castile conquered the citadel and thus began the centuries-long history of a cultural mesh of architecture, food and religion that today r emains apparent in the remarkable cityscapes and incredible cuisine, including tapas, making Madrid a fascinating place to visit.

We know that you are looking to have a great tapas Experience in Madrid and that’s why you are here. In these tapas experience you are going to eat the most iconic dishes of Spain as well as know the gastronomic culture of the city. This is not a normal experience, is a way to make friends and at the same time eat really well.

Don’t spend a lot of money in tourist trap restaurants that are all in every square. We know well the city and we are going to have these activities in a special place that locals love. This place is well known for all the citizens but unknow for most of travelers, tourist and backpackers.

How does our tapas experience in Madrid works?

How do we start our madrid tapas bar crawl madrid experience.

This experience of tapas starts at a meeting point where all the participants are going to meet each other. The guide will present his / her self and is going to make a nicely short introduction of the history of tapas. We will start in a place that will serve delicious paella and “tortilla de patatas” tapas.

 We will be accompanied by a drink of your choice, if you ask us, choose the wine to combine with the paella. When the groups are more than 4 people, we will be given a bottle of cider. Each participant will “break” the citron to taste its authentic Spanish flavor.

Continuing the tapa experience

Once we finish in the 1st stop, we all together, are going to walk (short distance) to the gambas tapas place. Once there we are going directly to all the tables that are special reserved for all of us. Here the star of the restaurant is the garlic prawn tapas. For decades and generations, these shrimp have satisfied the most demanding palates.

They will come accompanied by an authentic and delicious house wine. This wine is made by Spanish artisans and you will hardly be able to find it anywhere else in the world. Be careful, the wine is quite strong but it has a very good flavor and combines very well with these tapas!

After a short introduction to the place, the tapas dishes are going to start to arrive to our table. You are going to be amazed for the quality and quantity of them. • Olive tapenade (vegan recipe) - this is a vegan version of the typical recipe so great to serve at parties or enjoy alone smeared over some bread.

Keep ordering drinks and you’ll keep receiving food.  However in many bars in Madrid, tapas no longer come for free (more on that later). Often, tapas are consumed while standing at the bar or a nearby standing table. You won’t receive table service – you order at the bar.

There are so many variations of tapas that it would get silly if I tried to list them all here. Let’s just say that you can try dozens of different Spanish specialties as tapas – from cheese, to cured meats, to a plate of pulpo (octopus) or gambas (shrimp). Tapas bars tend to stick with the traditional, well loved dishes, and they throw in a few creative dishes now and then.

What is a Tapas Crawl?

Now we get to the fun stuff! A tapas crawl is where you start at one bar, order a drink, taste a few tapas, then move on to the next bar and do the whole thing again. Groups of friends partake in this tradition frequently. It’s a great way to catch up with friends, or to spend an afternoon trying all the incredible dishes you have on your Madrid “to-do” list when you’re visiting.

To really do it right, you should plan to visit at least 3 bars on your tapas crawl. How many more you do depends on how much stomach fortitude you have.

How to Participate in a Madrid Tapas Crawl?

There are two great ways to embark on your Madrid tapas crawl. Which version you choose is entirely up to your preference.  You can take a guided tapas tour with one of the many companies out there offering tours. Or you can devise a plan of your own and head out there to discover the best tapas bars in Madrid on your own.

Go On a Guided Food Tour in Madrid

There are many companies in Madrid that offer a daytime or evening tapas tour in Madrid. These tours meanders through the backstreets of the city, and introduce you to fantastic old bars and modern tapas gems that you probably wouldn’t have found yourself.

Throw in a bit of history, a ton of delicious food, copious amounts of wine and cider, and you’re guaranteed to have one of the best evenings you’ll spend in Madrid.

Choose Food Tours That Suit Your Interests

While many of the Madrid tapas tours leave from the famous Bear & The Strawberry Tree statue in Puerta del Sol, they all take different paths around the city and include different stops. If there’s something in particular you want to be included on the tour, like local beer or wine, you can pick a tour that caters to your interests.

Here are a few options that offer variety:

Keep in mind that some food tours include food and some don’t. If the price for a tour is low, it may be because you’re expected to pay for the food you eat during the tour in addition to the ticket price. Be sure to read the fine print to be sure what is included.

Plan Your Own Madrid Tapas Crawl

The other option is to plan your own Madrid tapas crawl. If you’re comfortable with your Spanish or aren’t bother by having to point at things you want to eat, there’s no reason you can’t build your own tapas crawl.

We suggest starting out in Puerta del Sol. It’s a very central location in the city and near to all the bars we recommend hitting up. See the map below for the stops we recommend:

• Taberna Tempranillo: Basque pinchos (usually bread with toppings)
• Casa Lucio: Huevos Rotos
• Casa Toni: Mollejas (lamb sweetbreads)
• La Casa del Abuelo: Gambas al Ajillo
• Museo del Jamon: Jamon and queso
• Chocolatería San Ginés:  churros and chocolate

What Tapas to Order in Spain

As we mentioned above, there are many different tapas to order. When you enter a bar, the menu will generally be written on a chalkboard behind the bar. The first thing to do is order your drink. If the bar gives free tapas, they’ll give it to you now. If they don’t give you anything, you’ll need to order what you want from the menu.

If you’re going to make it to 3 or more bars on tapas crawl, don’t order too many tapas at the first bar. It’s always tempting, but there will be plenty of time for that. Look around and see what everyone is eating and order that.

Remember to order your drink first! We always go for a Spanish wine or sidra, which is a hard apple cider. It’s very tasty and it gets served from a great height above your glass, so you can enjoy the show.

If the bar serves free tapas, you’ll receive it with your drink. If you don’t get one, you can then order your own from the menu.

Keep in mind that “tapas” are just small plates – so they can be just about any food imaginable, just in a small portion. If you’d rather have more substantial plates, you can order full-sized “raciones” or half-sized “medias raciones” at most bars and restaurants.

Larger plates include things like lamb sweetbreads, steak, and mushrooms, champiñones a la plancha (mushrooms), and albóndigas (meatballs).

If you order half portions, you can try a lot more things, so that’s always part of our plan, and likely what you’ll do on a food tour.

Our Favorite Tapas

Jamon Iberico

Jamon Iberico – a dry cured ham made from Iberian black pigs – is one of my favorite things in Spain . In Madrid, there are many Jamon shops, like Museo del Jamon, where you can try any grade of jamon you want, including Jamón Ibérico de Bellota. They also have cheese and other meats to try.

Tortilla Española

Spanish tortilla is easily my second favorite tapa in Spain. It’s not similar to Mexican tortillas, so don’t be surprised when a potato omelette arrives. The dish at its purist is just egg and potatoe, but you may find a variation that has onions, or een other ingredients.

Gambas al Ajillo

Madrid has a lot of great seafood, flown in directly from coastal areas of the country, like Galicia and Andalucia. Be on the look out for gambas al ajillo, pulpo ala galega (octopus) and Calamares fritos (fried calamari).

Patatas Bravas

I’ve eaten so many plates of patatas bravas. It’s such a simple dish – just fried potatoes topped with a tangy tomato sauce and aioli – but it’s so good I can’t help myself. You get a different presentation nearly every time you order it though, so that mixed it up a bit.

A popular snack all around Spain, croquetas are small fried balls of gooey goodness. They often contain mashed potato, cheese, and variations of meat or fish filling. It almost doesn’t matter what’s in them. They’re always delicious.

Huevos Rotos

Another simple, but delicious egg dish is Huevos Rotos. It consists of soft fried eggs in olive oil, with potatoes and chorizo. You mix it all up and it’s incredibly satisfying.

Anchovies are a popular tapa in Madrid. They are often served very simply, with just olive oil. You’ll also find them paired with green olives and/or artichokes. Don’t shy away from these little tasty morsels. They’re spectacular.

Yummmmm! I was in Madrid sooooooo long ago (I was 13, so 14 years ago…yikes!) but I remember it so vividly! I loved all the shops that sold the jamon in so many different ways! If I go back…which I hope to one day….I will hit up this tour. Definitely what I am all about when traveling!

Old Town Madrid Tapas & Wine Tour

This is what my tour looks like (If you are not too keen on any of the dishes, I always have a plan B): 1) Tour begins in the most popular tavern in Old Madrid sipping on the aperitif of the city, vermouth on tap , which we will pair with olives🍡 and breathtaking croquetas 😋

2) Next, I’ll whisk you off to Madrid’s most beautiful wine bar where we will drink Spain’s finest white wine: Albariño . We will take advantage of the opportunity to taste a special type of tapas called “tostas” .

3) It is now time to go deeper into Old Madrid through its narrow cobblestone streets and make our way to the highest rated restaurant in the neigborhood. We will sit down to cook the famous Presa Iberica on ceramic red hot plates.

5) To round off the night we will taste the king of all Spanish dessert wines: Pedro Ximenez. The wine will perform a miracle by turning vanilla ice-cream into rum & raisins with a caramel note and a toffee finish. I cannot tell you the brand we will have because it has taken me 20 years to find it.

Tour starts in the city center, in the evening, from Monday to Sunday. It lasts about 3 hours. Minimum age is 21 (exceptions can be made for private groups).

Groups are small, maximum of 10 (private groups can be bigger).

Ahhhh Taberna El Sur, home to the best sangria and COD scrambled eggs in Madrid. Yes, you read that right. Caleb and I LOVE Taberna El Sur with the kind of passion that makes one eat fish for breakfast because it’s eggs and that makes it not weird…right? We’ve been there almost 10 times and even once drank their sangria on an empty stomach because breakfast was the only time we could fit a visit in our itinerary . Can’t say I recommend doing that though.

From The Author : Caleb and I have been to Madrid so many times and eaten in SO many restaurants yet Taberna El Sur always remains a favorite! If you have any questions about visiting for a meal, leave a comment and I will reply ASAP!

Why We Freaking Love Taberna El Sur

From the time you walk into the time you leave, Taberna El Sur Madrid feels like this little super authentic slice of Madrid that you guys have been dreaming about during those endless Zoom meetings (except you have to put on pants to visit, just FYI.) Like I always say, it’s always a good time to visit Madrid because you just don’t have to try to have an authentic Spanish experience, and a trip to Taberna El Sur is exactly the same.

The long and skinny restaurant is lined with cozy warm-colored wooden benches and stools and the walls are covered with with eclectic movie posters, guitars, and wine bottles.

Pair all that with the terracotta tiles and wood paneling and you’ve got a super eclectic little spot that you will find both locals AND tourists eating at. You know, kinda like that one friend’s house when you were in college back in the day.

At peak eating times it gets super busy and everyone squishes in like sardines it’s lively and has this overall fun atmosphere! If you want to make it more romantic, I would recommend going at off-peak hours and choosing one of the corner tables that are more tucked away.

The waiters are SUPER friendly, and speak good English and the Taberna El Sur Menu is both in English and Spanish. We also appreciate that their house specials have stars next to the item name and the food is really reasonably priced and served quickly! 

Another HUGE reason we love Taberna El Sur is that you can order half portions of a lot of the things and even the half portions are pretty big! So, you can try more things without getting full! Even just a cup of sangria is nice and full!

Don’t share that though. You have our permission to be territorial on that one.

What You Have to Eat

Honestly, if you don’t order the sangria I don’t know if we can be friends anymore. It’s literally the best sangria we’ve had in all of Madrid and we aren’t usually “sangria people.”  We usually go for the vermouth at Taberna La Concha Madrid .

When you get a pitcher of it (trust us: don’t just get a glass. Your future tipsy-at-2 pm self will thank us later) it’s always so beautiful and adorned with golden berries. It comes with oranges and apples floating around in the not-too-sweet sangria red wine base.

It has A LOT of depth of flavor and is very smooth with a hint of spice. There is also some good fruity flavor without it tasting like sugar but the flavor of the red wine still comes through. I know you don’t want to admit it, but you know what Arbor Mist tastes like and this is not that. Thankfully.

In terms of eats, well…you really can’t go wrong with any of their sort of “Spanish fusion” tapas. Our favorite must-try” are:

• The Ropa Vieja – The meat was so tender and flavorful that we almost wept tears of deliciousness and it came with fried potatoes that was incredibly appreciated on the day that we drank sangria on empty. 
• The Grilled Baby Squid With Salad (Chipirones A La Plancha) – If you’ve ever had chewy, rubbery squid and now have squid PTSD, this will cure you. The squid had a smoky flavor but was so soft and tender
• Cod Scrambled Eggs (Revuelto De Puerros Y Bacalao) – I know. You’re giving scrambled eggs with fish a little side-eye. We did too but then our adventurous taste buds were like TRY IT..and now we order it every. single time. These eggs are impossibly creamy with huge chunks of cod and leeks. Prediction: you guys email us after your trip and tell us it was one of your favorite things. 
• Asparagus Scrambled Eggs (Revuelto De Trigueros) – If ya’ll are a couple who is a little less adventurous with eating, the asparagus scrambled eggs are a decent swap for the cod. You still get the creamy goodness but without the whole “fish and eggs” situation. Baby steps.

IMPORTANT: Both the cod and asparagus scrambled eggs are only available at their location on C. de la Torrecilla. This is the main location and me and Caleb’s favorite.

Because we always keep it real with you, the one thing we don’t recommend trying is the Salmon Tempura with Cheese (Brochetas De Salmon). For real: why is cheese on salmon in every tapas bar in Madrid? IT DOES NOT TASTE GOOD.

Now you won’t be able to see it on every menu as you walk through all the areas in Madrid.

Address:  They have multiple locations:

• Taberna El Sur: C. de la Torrecilla del Leal, 12, Centro, 28012 Madrid, Spain (This is our favorite location and we recommend this one. Especially if you only have a few days in Madrid as its nice and central!)
• El Sur de Moratin: C. de Moratín, 19, Centro, 28014 Madrid, Spain
• Taberna El Sur de Huertas: C. de las Huertas, 24, Centro, 28014 Madrid, Spain
• Mas Al Sur:  C. de Sta. Isabel, 35, Centro, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Hours:  Monday to Friday from noon to midnight at all locations except Mas Al Sur – it opens at 9 am!

Don’t get there right at opening time. It’s “Spanish Time.” Caleb and I did this and stood outside for quite a while before they actually opened

Atmosphere:  Cozy and upbeat at the same time and friendly to tourists 

Reservation Policy:  Only the El Sur de Moratin takes reservations. The other locations are waitlist only.

Our Rating: 4.5/5.   Only because we did have one item on the menu that we didn’t like and we’re tough food critics like that. The atmosphere and price is a 5/5.

Once you try Taberna El Sur, make sure to also go on this incredible food tour of Madrid. Doing so will ensure you don’t miss any of the best food and drinks in the city! We’ve done it TWICE and loved it both times! Don’t worry, you won’t visit this spot!

Yes, Taberna El Sur does have gluten-free options. I talked with the staff to make sure and they suggested seafood paella, grilled vegetables, cod confit with goat cheese, chicken curry, and their cheeses.
