Texas is a Scottish rock pop band formed in 1986, hailing from Glasgow. The band are currently signed to Pias Recordings.

The band was the brainchild of bassist Johnny McElhone in the late 80’s, who was joined by fellow Glaswegians, Stuart Keer (Drums), Ally McErlaine, and future 90s pin up, lead guitarist and singer, Sharleen Spiteri.

The Ry Codder scored 1984 film, Paris, Texas, inspired the group. Not only did they borrow their name from the feature, but also the American guitair heavy sound featured in the background. After playing shows in Glasgow, McElhone, who had been in two previous bands, made use of a connection with Mercury Records with whom they released their debut single "I Don't Want a Lover," which reached number eight in the charts. They quickly released their debut album “Southside” which was another top ten hit, selling two million copies, and a UK and European tour quickly ensued.

After a short break the band released two moderately fruitful albums in the early 90’s, “Mothers Heaven” and “Ricks Road”, before experiencing their comeback success with their fourth release “White on Blonde” in 1997, which spawned four top then UK hits.

Going into the 2000’s era, the band released a further three LP’s, all to critical and commercial triumph, before going on a surprise hiatus from 2005. During this time, bandmember Ally McErlaine survived a brain anyuersm. In 2013, the band signed with Pias Recordings to release their album, “The Conversation”. During the launch of the album, Texas played two special intimate shows, one at Kings Tuts Wah Wah Hut in their hometown of Glasgow, the other at The 100 Club in London.

As well as touring around the world, Texas have also performed at awards shows such as the BRITs, alongside legendary rap group Wu-Tang Clan. Their music has also been used in TV shows such as “Ellen”. Sharleen Spiteri has also embarked on a solo career, having released her debut album “Melody” in 2008.

Live reviews

With that mop of black hair and cheekbones to die for still in place, you could swear you were looking at the Sharleen Spiteri who gave us, as part of Texas, the album Southside way back in 1989. She’s barely changed, and still singing those songs like they’re brand new and she’s not belted them out a million times over the years. While never critical darlings, it’s easy to forget what a great and soulful singing voice Spiteri has, while also being in possession of a writing talent, alongside bassist Johnny McElhone, that’s given us classic tracks like "I Don’t Want a Lover" and "Say What You Want" that despite countless plays still sound as fresh as ever. Texas has been playing live long enough to know how to create a set list which will visit the classics as well as hit on the tracks from their latest record, so everyone is kept rapt and entertained for as long as the show lasts. While the band is still full of excellent musicians, the focus is always on the eternally youthful and engaging Spiteri – and I’m sure they wouldn’t have it any other way. Of course, sets always close out with "Say What You Want," from the band’s resurgent second period of success, but encores take on some of the most recent material which has been co-written with Richard Hawley and Bernard Butler. It just goes to show that despite the years rolling by, Texas still know their way around a good pop song.

Scottish rockers Texas, headed up by the evocative Sharleen Spiteri were a staple frequenter of the charts in the 90's and their energetic live show took them around the world to their fast growing global fanbase. Years later, the band have all aged and the shows may have slowed down in pace but the sincerity and musical talent is ever present.

Their fanbase is one of true devotion so there will be audience members who have followed the band's entire career along with those who are later to the party. Either way, Sharleen greets them all in a warm manner and builds a wonderfully natural rapport onstage. Showcasing new material from the mature pop record 'The Conversation' the fans remain enthusiastic and applaud with real effort for these tracks. It is however the countrified pop of 'Say What You Want' and 'Don't Want A Lover' that really gets the crowd singing at deafening levels. It is fair to say that Texas have achieved consistent relevance throughout their career and the new music is sounding fresh as ever.

Very nice performance of Sharleen and her band in Antwerp. I think we've heard all the famous songs of the last 25 years. She has a lot of contact and interference with her audience. But You have to understand her English with the Scottish accent ;-)

They 're a real life band !

They came back twice for some extra songs. Also the covers were excellent !

Don't hesitate to go to their 25th anniversary tour !

This was the first time I got to see Texas, what a memorable gig! I enjoyed it from start to finish. The lead singer was very funny and really interacted with the crowd. This was probably the best gig I have been to that involved the crowd as much as they did. There was a big Scottish following. The music was excellent and you can tell that the band enjoyed performing.

samantha.house’s profile image

Great show, Sharleen obviously loves to come home to Glasgow to perform.

Not only great music but the banter was first class. We were lucky as went on second night (1stAug) so had good weather for this open air show but not so good night as raining(2nd Aug)

Never seen her live before but even though wrong side of 60 we are now firm fans.

Excellent performance in front of a packed Usher Hall.

Not having seen Texas for a few years, we loved Sharleen's chat between the music, very funny and as always very accommodating for the fans coming to the front for selfies and a chat!

Great mix of tracks from their entire back catalogue including the latest album.

A terrific evening's entertainment.

Great night, hugely enjoyed the show all the hits and more, Sharleen definately knows how to work a crowd, only drawback was she asked the crowd to stand for the complete show, but as we are of a certain age we had to sit down after a while and then we couldn't see the show any more, shame otherwise very, very good.

Fab event.. I last saw the band when they supported Simple Minds at Wembley Arena.. They were great then and just as good today., 25 years of entertaining fans around the world is a great achievement..

The set was tight, Charlene's voice was superb.. Atmosphere in the Roundhouse was electric..

Due to parking problems we missed the first 2 tunes. But having arrived to a packed Bridgewater Hall we quickly got into the mood of the evening.

Texas didn't disappointed either singing all the well known hits including my favourite Insane.

Great night had by all plus a superb venue .

rob-keast’s profile image

Great venue and great gig. Sharleen's vocals and stage presence are still right up there among the all time best. She had the capacity crowd eating out of her hand. The rest of the band were also on top form and rocked the house. Looking forward to the next chance to see Texas live.

Texas announces "Very Best Of" tour for 2024 as tickets set to go on sale

Fans will be able to see the Scottish rockers at a series of Arena shows in September next year

greatest hits

  • 21:19, 18 Sep 2023

Texas have confirmed that they will be embarking on a six-date arena tour in September 2024, taking to the stage at some of the UK's biggest arena venues along the way.

Singer Sharleen Spiteri and her band of merry musicians will be kicking off the Very Best Of tour at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on September, 6, before heading on out to Liverpool, Bournemouth, Cardiff and Birmingham. They will finish off the tour with a homecoming show at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow where Scottish fans will show their love for the band that spent their formative years in the city.

Tickets will be available via Ticketmaster , Gigs and Tours , Live Nation and See Tickets with the general sale starting at 10am on Friday, September 22 . Fans who don't want to miss out on seeing Texas on tour could score their seats 48 hours earlier, by signing up for access to the pre-sale event taking place at 10am on Wednesday, September 20.

The tour follows a particularly triumphant performance on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury back in July, where singer Sharleen praised festival organiser Emily Eavis for being "a massive supporter of female musicians.”

The career-spanning set was a barnstorming display of the Scottish rockers' enduring talent, and an energetic crowd sang along with every song of their hour-long set, in a show that saw an effortless return to festival form since their last appearance at Worthy Farm in 1999.

Texas have come a long way from the slide guitar and mesmerising drum beat of their first rock hit "I Don't Want a Lover" in 1989, which reached number eight in the charts. Since then, the band has gone on to produce 10 studio albums, selling over 40 million records worldwide.

The Very Best Of tour dates:

  • Leeds, First Direct Arena - September, 6
  • Liverpool, M&S Bank Arena - September 7
  • Bournemouth International Centre - September, 10
  • Cardiff, Utilita Arena - September, 11
  • Birmingham, Utilita Arena - September, 13
  • Glasgow, OVO Hydro - September, 14

Taylor Swift shocker: New album, "The Tortured Poets Department," is actually a double album

By Alex Sundby , Brian Dakss

Updated on: April 19, 2024 / 10:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Anticipation was growing at a fever pitch before Taylor Swift's latest album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," dropped at midnight EDT. But the pop superstar had a huge surprise on tap: It's actually a double album.

When Part One dropped, Swift wrote on Instagram , "All's fair in love and poetry... New album THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. Out now 🤍"

Then came the shocker, revealed in an Instagram post saying , "It's a 2am surprise: The Tortured Poets Department is a secret DOUBLE album. ✌️ I'd written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here's the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn't mine anymore… it's all yours. 🤍."

What's Taylor Swift's new album about?

Swift described the album as "new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure."

She also said that time has been "closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted."

"Entertainment Tonight" correspondent Denny Directo called the record some of her most vulnerable work.

"Fans were left with more questions than there were answers, so good luck trying to decipher who these songs are about, what they mean," Directo told CBS News. "… I feel like there's more heartbreak songs on this than there are love songs."

Hours ahead of the record's release, Swift said on social media that its first single was "Fortnight," featuring Post Malone, and its music video was released Friday night .

Swift praised the Grammy-nominated artist's musical experimentation and melodies "that just stick in your head forever."

"I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight," Swift said in her post .

"Fortnight" isn't the only track on the album on which Swift worked with another artist. Florence and The Machine is also featured.

What's on "The Tortured Poets Department" tracklist?

Swift posted an initial tracklist to social media in February one day after she announced the album at  the Grammys , where she won for best pop vocal album. Here's the list of all 31 songs:

  • "Fortnight"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department"
  • "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"
  • "So Long, London"
  • "But Daddy I Love Him"

These Are Going to Be the Most Popular Travel Destinations in 2024

A lready thinking about where you want to travel in 2024 ? If you’re hoping to hit the hottest travel destinations of the year, Expedia Group is here to help. The one-stop travel site—alongside Hotels.com and VRBO—just released Unpack '24 , a travel trends analysis for the coming year. In addition to detailing the projected top 10 most popular international destinations of 2024, the site also revealed 10 “dupes” for travelers looking to perhaps spend a bit less, as well as those hoping to be surrounded by fewer fellow tourists. Additionally, they revealed 10 affordable cities where the world’s biggest musical acts are set to perform, as well as where to travel if you live a sober lifestyle.

“At Expedia Group, we have extensive first-party travel data that we use to enhance and curate experiences for our travelers across Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo,” Jon Gieselman, president of Expedia Brands, says in the report. “These insights shape our travel forecasts, revealed in Unpack '24, enabling our travelers to be the first to discover and book the most desired trips before they become well-beaten paths.”

Ready to ignite your travel bug? Ahead, discover the most popular travel destinations of 2024.

The Top 10 Travel Destinations of 2024

Expedia Group predicts that travelers are most likely to jet set to destinations popularized in fan-favorite TV shows and movies. According to the report, “More than half of travelers say they’ve researched or booked a trip to a destination after seeing it on a TV show or in a movie. In fact, travelers say TV shows influence their travel decisions more than Instagram, TikTok, and podcasts.” With that in mind, they reveal that the top 10 travel destinations of 2024 are as follows:

  • Thailand - Featured in White Lotus , Season 3—which has sadly been pushed to premiere in 2025
  • Romania - Featured in Wednesday , Season 2—which has not yet set a release date
  • Malta - As seen in Gladiator 2 , which is set to premiere on November 22, 2024
  • Paris - As seen in Emily in Paris
  • Scottish Highlands - Featured in Outlander
  • London, Bath, and Windsor, U.K. - As seen in Bridgerton and The Crown
  • South Korea - Featured in Squid Game —the Season 2 release date has yet to be announced
  • Florida Keys - As seen in the series Bad Monkey
  • Australia - Featured in Baz Luhrmann’s Faraway Downs series, as well as the film Furiosa , which is set to premiere on May 24, 2024
  • Greece - as seen in the films Argylle (set to release in 2024) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

The Top 10 Travel Destination Dupes

Dupes have long been lauded in the beauty and fashion categories, and now the concept is making its way to travel. “1 in 3 of those polled say they’ve booked a dupe,” the report reveals. “But what do these less obvious alternatives offer besides potential savings? They’re often less crowded, tend to be a little unexpected, and can be every bit as delightful as the tried-and-true destinations.”

Intrigued by the idea of booking a stellar vacation for a fraction of the price? Check out Expedia Group’s Top 10 Travel Destination Dupes, below, which are listed as the original destination of inspiration and the dupe that mirrors it.

Through their research, in which they analyzed the average daily rates of tour locations, they found the top 10 most affordable cities (less than $150/night on average) where travelers can witness the likes of Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Coldplay, Metallica, Madonna, and more.
