The Best Video Games Based On Classic Literature

  • Many video games draw inspiration from books, not just movies and TV shows. Classic literature can provide rich material for game developers to adapt and create new narratives.
  • The Lord of the Rings Online stands out as a game that directly takes inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien's novels, allowing players to participate in the War of the Ring and explore the rich world of Middle-Earth.
  • Castlevania is a game series that adapts Bram Stoker's Dracula in a selective way, focusing on the iconic villain and his Transylvanian castle while introducing new characters and elements from other horror stories.

Many video games take their cues from movies and TV shows. It's not surprising given they're all visual mediums. Developers and artists simply have an easier time translating something that they can see. That said, books can be an equally fruitful source of material.

RELATED: Best Lesser Known Sci-Fi Books To Read During The Holidays

That's why classic literature has inspired several of gaming's greats . The titles are sometimes direct adaptations of the novels, letting players tackle the books' iconic events in different ways. More often than not, however, the developers pick and choose aspects to adapt. They then fashion these facets into a new work to capture audiences both new and old. Both approaches can succeed in the right hands, and these games prove that.

The Lord Of The Rings Online

The lord of the rings trilogy by j.r.r. tolkien, lord of the rings online.

Platform(s) PC

Released 2007-04-24

Developer(s) Standing Stone Games

Genre(s) MMORPG

Metascore 86 (Shadows Of Angmar)

J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and other Middle-earth novels are among the greatest literary works of all time. The world of Men, Elves, Dwarves, and other creatures is so rich in detail, history, and culture that fans could swear it was real. At the center of it all, however, are poignant tales of humble heroes triumphing over evil and power corrupting the noblest individuals. These traits are a reliable guide for any narrative. It's partially why so many LOTR games exist, even if most of them use the aesthetic of Peter Jackson's movies.

On the other hand, The Lord of the Rings Online takes inspiration directly from the books. This MMORPG makes players a pivotal part of the War of the Ring. Their deeds have a tremendous impact on events in the mainline trilogy, both on the frontlines and behind the scenes. That's because the narrative tackles the northern conflict and other plot threads described in supplementary works . This material provides hundreds of hours of content as players partake in quests and activities of all stripes.

What's more, these storylines unfold within iconic locales beautifully brought to life. LOTRO truly lets fans live in Middle-Earth.

Castlevania

Dracula by bram stoker.

Platform(s) Nintendo Entertainment System, Switch, PS4, PC, Game Boy Advance

Released 1987-05-01

Developer(s) Konami

Genre(s) Platformer, Action

Metascore 74 (GBA)

One of the great faces of horror is Count Dracula. In Bram Stoker's novel, the vampire terrorizes Victorian London, drinking the blood of innocents and corrupting others into his soulless servants. All of it is to slake his constant thirst and desire for conquest. As effective as he is, the villain transcends the source material and appears in several works outside his original book.

One of these is Castlevania . This action platformer series sees players try to vanquish the evil count in his home. The gothic castles and other haunted settings make for eye-popping level design, and it's always fun to slay classic horror monsters with a trusty whip. Despite these strengths, loyalists may take issue with some of these games .

RELATED: Movies Every Dracula Fan Should Watch

Castlevania is selective in how it adapts Bram Stoker's book. Dracula is the overarching villain, and his castle still lies in Transylvania. Yet instead of using Jonathan Harker and Mina Murray as protagonists, the narratives follow the vampire-slaying Belmont clan.

That said, some series entries incorporate more elements of the source material than others. For instance, John Morris of Castlevania: Bloodlines is the son of the novel's Quincy Morris. The series has also included characters from other scary stories, such as the titular vampire from Carmilla and the monster from Frankenstein . For these reasons, Castlevania is more of a horror highlight reel than a direct translation.

The Witcher

The last wish by andrzej sapkowski, the witcher 3: wild hunt.

Platform(s) Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One

Released 2015-05-19

Developer(s) CD Projekt Red

Genre(s) Action, RPG, Adventure

Metascore 94

The Witcher series is another rich fantasy realm, albeit one rife with racial strife and international conflict. The books, written by Andrzei Sapkowski, follow Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster slayer who desperately tries to maintain his neutrality. That aim becomes increasingly difficult amid moral and ethical dilemmas, and it's virtually impossible when these dilemmas threaten the people he cares about. While the books may not be decades old, they are highly regarded as some of the best examples of Polish literature of all time.

Fans feel that conflict in The Witcher games. These titles present complex plots involving ambitious power plays, crushing betrayals, and inner turmoil. They technically take place after the books, but they maintain many of the same characters. In addition, they carry similar themes about the price of neutrality and choosing the lesser evil .

RELATED: Novel-Based Fantasy Worlds Ripe For MMOs

It all culminates in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . This is a sprawling sandbox encompassing more of Sapkowski's world than ever before. The game has countless quests to complete, and these are all engaging in how they respect the novels' cynical messages and moral ambiguity. More importantly, the title brings Geralt's journey to a satisfying conclusion by reuniting him with his surrogate family. In the end, he shapes a meaningful legacy beyond being just a Witcher.

Enslaved: Odyssey To The West

Journey to the west by wu cheng'en, enslaved: odyssey to the west.

Platform(s) PS3, Xbox 360, PC

Released 2010-10-05

Developer(s) Ninja Theory

Genre(s) Action, Adventure

Metascore 82

One might expect this sci-fi title to have similar sci-fi roots, but Enslaved: Odyssey to the West actually takes inspiration from a classic Chinese folktale: Journey to the West . The classic story chronicles a Buddhist monk's pilgrimage to retrieve a set of sacred scrolls from India. He encounters various demons and other obstacles, and his only defenses are his companions--all inspired by animals like a monkey and a pig. The timeless tale has inspired numerous other stories in fiction.

It also forms the backbone of Enslaved . The game may lack a monk, but it does have Trip, a girl wishing to return to her faraway village. She receives reluctant aid from a couple of unscrupulous individuals: Monkey and Pigsy. In a nod to its Asian roots, the former sports a staff for both melee and ranged combat. It also facilitates some enjoyable (if derivative) platforming. The real attraction, though, is the story.

Enslaved evolves the narrative's themes of finding enlightenment, maturity, and redemption. These emerge not just through the compelling characters and their growing bond, but also via the concept of slavery. In an uncertain world, some people may prefer the solace and blissful ignorance of servitude. Who wants to "enlighten" themselves and face reality in an apocalypse ? The plot puts an unsettling twist on the usual quest for freedom, and it's a journey that not everyone would embark on.

Spec Ops: The Line

Heart of darkness by joseph conrad.

Released 2012-06-26

Developer(s) Yager Development

Genre(s) Third-Person Shooter

Metascore 77

Very little hype was given to this game leading up to its release, but Spec Ops: The Line quickly became an under-the-radar hit thanks to its hard-hitting narrative about the moral grayness and psychological depravity of warfare. A standard third-person military shooter on the surface, Spec Ops hid a much deeper game underneath.

What many don't know is that Spec Ops is based on the Joseph Conrad novella Heart of Darkness. The same story that inspired the classic Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now, Spec Ops' Captain Walker is essentially a reversal of the novella's protagonist, Charles Marlow, with Walker becoming more akin to the novella's eventual antagonist, Kurtz (or Konrad in the game, a play on the name of the original author), by the game's conclusion.

The themes of civilian casualties, the trauma of war, and the flaws of the American war machine's presence abroad that made Apocalypse Now so affecting are all present in Spec Ops: The Line , and while the story is a bit less philosophical than its inspirations, those inspirations still shine through.

WEATHER ALERT

A warning, a watch and 2 advisories in effect for 15 regions in the area

Sa vibes: garrett t. capps blends alt-country sound with sa flavor, this local musician takes listeners on a journey that sounds both familiar and out of this world.

Valerie Gomez , Video Editor

Jeff Saldaña , Director

SA Vibes is a KSAT project that features local musicians performing live songs.

SAN ANTONIO – The third episode of SA Vibes features Garrett T. Capps, an artist who’s kind of a big deal around these parts.

He’s toured both nationally and internationally, and he’s even been profiled by Rolling Stone magazine! You’ll normally catch him with his band NASA Country and what you’ll hear is a unique concoction of country music mixed with an electronic sound.

I first saw this band at The Lonesome Rose, which is a local honky-tonk that Capps runs and books talent for.

I was blown away by what I heard -- a genre-bending style of country that I really enjoyed. Rolling Stone described it as a “blend (of) synth and twangy guitar with lyrics about outer space and social unrest... “mixing Kraftwerk with Doug Sahm.”

Many in the local music scene clearly agree, as his shows are always packed. He also works to bring all kinds of great music from across the U.S. to play at The Lonesome Rose stage.

For this SA Vibes set, Garrett T. Capps and Josh Baca perform “Goodbye San Antonio, Hello Amsterdam” and “People Are Beautiful.”

Capp’s played on April 26 at La Semana Alegre at Hemisfair Park in downtown San Antonio.

His next show will be in Lockhart on May 3, at Lockhart Arts & Craft, and in Galveston on May 4.

We asked a few questions about his music influences and more - see his answers below.

What’s your favorite part about the SA music scene?

I love our culture and our history. I mean, ...Josh Baca, he plays with Los Texmaniacs and they back up Flaco [Jimenez]. I mean, Flaco Jimenez is a hero. One of the our most legendary rock stars to ever come out of San Antonio, and I think it’s really inspiring seeing people take the music that’s inherent to San Antonio out into the world or just jam here in town. There’s a lot of friendly people around but are laid back and chill and like good music.

What do you hope to see for the future of the local scene?

I would like to see more original musical artists making music that they can go outside of town and be original and be progressive or just stand out. And it’s hard to get music outside of San Antonio sometimes. It’s a very laid-back city. There’s not really like a music industry around here that’s pumping out music to the masses. So it’s very down-home and familial in San Antonio, but it’s really inspiring and cool to see bands take their music outside of town and all over the globe.

You can find more information and music from Garrett T. Capps on his website or Spotify .

About SA Vibes

San Antonio is well-known for its culture, but the local music scene has always seemed a bit hidden.

Unless someone takes you to a local show — at venues like The Lonesome Rose, Hi-Tones, The Mix, Paper Tiger, 502 Bar — chances are you’ll never even know our music scene even exists. That’s what made me decide to launch this passion project that we’re calling “ SA Vibes .”

My name is Valerie and I’m a video editor at KSAT. I’ve been attending local shows for over a decade, and I want to put a spotlight on the great talent that San Antonio has to offer.

Each month we’ll be releasing a new “SA Vibes” video across all KSAT digital platforms and our YouTube channel showcasing a local musician performing live versions of their songs from the KSAT garden.

If you’re a San Antonio musician and would like to be a part of this project, please send information about your next show to our SA Vibes email .

The Five: Stars with work to do to make FedExCup Playoffs at halfway mark

Need to Know

Change Text Size

If the PGA TOUR season is a long, topsy-turvy journey from the West Coast Swing to the FedExCup Playoffs, culminating with the TOUR Championship in Atlanta, then we’ve reached a sort of Continental Divide. With a full 17 weeks of golf behind us and 17 still ahead, it’s time to take a deep breath, look around, and assess just where this is all headed.

For five players in particular, that’s a question with no easy answers.

Tom Kim (77), Viktor Hovland (95), Rickie Fowler (97), Justin Rose (105) and Nick Dunlap (142) are all outside the top 70 in the FedExCup, which means that if the FedExCup Playoffs were to start today at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, they wouldn’t be in attendance.

There’s still plenty of time, of course. On the PGA TOUR, one week can change everything, as Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry reminded at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last week. In between grilled oysters and karaoke, they pocketed 400 FedExCup points apiece in the Big Easy to each work his way into the top 15 in the standings.

Here’s a closer look at the aforementioned five big names who need to make a similar move.

1. Tom Kim (FedExCup 77)

When he won the Shriners Children’s Open last fall, Kim, 21, became the youngest three-time winner on the PGA TOUR since Tiger Woods – elite company. But for Kim, 23rd in the Official World Golf Ranking, those accomplishments have brought big expectations, which hasn’t been easy, as evident in his star turn in the second season of Netflix's “Full Swing” docuseries.

Tom Kim’s winning highlights from the Shriners Children's Open

Sure enough, this season has been a struggle for Kim, who has no top-10s in 11 starts. He shot a final-round 66 to finish T30 at The Masters Tournament, and, in his last start, finished T18 at the RBC Heritage – his best finish since a T17 at the WM Phoenix Open in early February.

Kim, who has made his U.S. base in Dallas and befriended fellow Dallas pros like Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth, is in the field for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson this week.

“I haven't really had the best of starts,” Kim said after his final-round 66 at the Masters, “And to see this round and see the hard work pay off, it's good.”

2. Viktor Hovland (95)

All Hovland did last season was win the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, storm to victory at the BMW Championship and hold on to capture the entire FedExCup. And after all that he made a coaching change, and has been tinkering in search of … what, exactly?

Viktor Hovland’s best shots from the FedExCup Playoffs

Whatever it is, for Hovland it’s been elusive. The seventh-ranked player in the world has had a peculiar season, to say the least, with nothing better than a T19 at The Genesis Invitational. He finished a lackluster T62 at THE PLAYERS Championship and shot a second-round 81 at the Masters Tournament to miss the cut. He hasn’t played since, presumably as he pieces his game back together, and is not in the field for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

“I took a huge break after last year,” Hovland said at the Masters, “and when I came back, things were a little bit different and I had to kind of find my way back to where I think I'm going to play my best golf. And even at the end of the last year I still felt like, yeah, I was playing great, but I got a lot out of my game and it didn't necessarily feel sustainable.

“It's not like I consciously went in and said, hey, we're going to change everything up,” he added.

For one of golf’s hardest workers, 2023 was about the destination; 2024 has been a journey.

3. Rickie Fowler (97)

One of the best comeback stories of last season, Fowler came back from a swing change that didn’t take, reuniting with coach Butch Harmon before winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The emotional victory in Detroit broke a drought of four and a half years.

“I'm at least starting to head the right way,” Fowler said after finishing T30 at the Masters last month. “I saw some good progress this week. It was a slow start to the year, but I feel like everything is, like I said, starting to go the right direction.

“Starting to see some positive signs,” he continued. “Starting to get my iron play back. Just need to kind of get the tee ball, the driver, mainly driver, kind of get that thing back in the short grass more often than that. That will at least help us get things started.”

He is not in the field for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

4. Justin Rose (105)

Rose, the 2018 FedExCup champion, was rock-steady for Europe at the Ryder Cup in Rome last fall, but that hasn’t been the case on the PGA TOUR so far this year.

Although he finished T11 in his title defense at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, that’s been the only top-30 finish for Rose. His T44 at the RBC Heritage, his most recent start, broke a streak of three straight missed cuts. He’s not in the field for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

If anyone understands patience, though, it’s probably Rose, 43, who has racked up 11 victories apiece on the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour and won gold for England at the 2016 Olympics.

5. Nick Dunlap (142)

This was always going to be a season of transition for Dunlap, who expected to be finishing his sophomore year at Alabama right now but won The American Express in January to give himself a PGA TOUR exemption through 2026 and entry into all remaining Signature Events in ’24. All he had to do was turn pro and accept membership, which he promptly did.

Nick Dunlap wins The American Express 2024

He could not, however, accept the 500 FedExCup points for winning The American Express.

Since then, it’s been a bumpy ride, but not one without its high points. Although Dunlap missed the cut at THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters, he shot a third-round 63 and finished T11 at the Texas Children’s Houston Open in late March.

“It's starting to get a little bit more comfortable,” Dunlap said at THE PLAYERS. “I would say it's not as – my eyes aren't as wide as they were when first getting out here.

“There's new struggles and new problems that I didn't know I'd face,” he added.

With 17 weeks to go, he and the others still have all kinds of time – for now.
