Guruvayur is home to the historic Sree Krishna Temple, called the Dwaraka of the South. It is among the most revered and popular pilgrimage destinations in Kerala and the entire country. The central shrine is believed to have been rebuilt in 1638 C.E. The architectural style and individual elements inside the shrine are beautiful representations of the history of the place. As per tradition, the shrine faces the East with two Gopurams (tower), one in the East (Kizhakkenada) and other in the West (Padinjarenada).  In the front and the east side of the Nalambalam (a square shaped column) lie the pillars of light called Deepastambam. There are a number of such light pillars in the temple. The eastern side’s Deepastambam is 24 feet in height and has thirteen circular receptacles, making it an absolutely spectacular sight when lit. Another famous sight here is the Dwajasthamba. It is a flag-staff, around 70 feet tall, fully covered with gold.   The square shaped Sree Kovil has two stairs and three rooms inside and has aninner room known as Garbhagriha. This is where the idol of Sree Krishna is placed. One can also find images of Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappa and Edathedathu Kavil Bhagavathy inside the temple. The healing powers of the shrine drive many to visit it in large numbers. Only Hindus are allowed inside the Temple.  Temple Timings: Open 03:00 - 12:30 hrs & 16:30 - 21:15 hrs

Travel from kochi to thrissur, 1 dolours basilica.

At a distance of 1 Km from Thrissur Railway Station, Dolours Basilica (or Basilica of our Lady of Dolours) is believed to be the biggest and tallest Church in Asia. Built in 1875, this Roman Catholic Church is also called Puthen Palli (New Church). This church was built with the support of Raja Rama Varma, Maharaja of Kochi. However, most of the current structure is the result of major renovation held in the 19th century. With built up area of 25,000 Sq. Ft, this Church has three towers, two at the front side and one at the rear (called as Bible Tower). The towers at the front are 146 feet tall and the rear tower is 260 feet in height. This church is dedicated to Mother Mary. Eight music bells imported from Germany are special attractions of this church. The chapel has 15 altars. The church is famous for its Gothic style of architecture. The church celebrates two festivals. Basilica Feast - last Sunday of November & Feast of Our Lady of Dolours - 15th September.

2 Thrissur Zoo

At a distance of 3 Kms from Thrissur Railway Station, Zoo is a major attraction in the city of Thrissur. The zoo provides shelter for many endangered species like the Asiatic Lion, Tiger and the extremely rare lion-tailed macaque, etc. It has an impressive reptile house with King Kobra, Indian python, krait, etc. The reptile house is on of the best in South India. At a distance of 2 km from Thrissur Railway Station, Thiruvambadi Krishna Temple is a sacred Hindu temple situated in Thrissur, Kerala. Located to the north of the Vadakkunnathan Temple, it is one of the largest Krishna Temples in Kerala, and among the best Thrissur places to visit . Dedicated to Lord Krishna, the oldest record of the history of Thiruvambadi Temple dates back to the 16th century. The temple was formerly situated at Edakkalathur, 20 Km Northwest of the Trichur town. The idol was transported to the present place by villagers, and the custody was given to a childless couple at the Kandanath Mana. The couple installed the idol in a hall within their house premises. As ardent worshippers of Kodungallur Bhagavathy, they regularly used to visit the temple. The elephants housed at this sanctuary are brought for ritual offerings at Guruvayoor Temple. The elephants offered to the Guruvayoor deity by rich devotees are given shelter at the sanctuary. Elephants are also trained for performing various rituals. These elephants are groomed for various ritualistic performances in festivals like Thrissur Pooram. 3 St. Thomas Forane Church - Palayoor

At a distance of 32 Kms from Thrissur Railway Station & 4 Kms from Guruvayoor, St. Thomas Forane Church located in Palayoor is the oldest church in India, established by St.Thomas in 52 AD. This is one of the seven churches founded by St.Thomas the Apostle. A silver statue of St.Thomas on the roof and charming stone lamps are special features of the church. The main entrance of the church is decorated with 14 granite life size statues of various scenes from the life of St. Thomas. The jubilee door in front of the entrance to the main hall of the church portrays various important biblical events, carved in Burmese teak. Palayoor Mahatheerthadanam is the main festival celebrated at this church. Devotees walk all the way from Thrissur to Palayoor church carrying wooden crosses.

4 Chavakkad Beach

At a distance of 4 km from Guruvayoor, and 32 km from Thrissur, Chavakkad Beach is a beautiful beach situated at Chavakkad near Guruvayoor. Lying on the coast of the Arabian Sea, it is one of the stunning beaches in Kerala , and among the top Thrissur tourist places . Chavakkad Beach is known for its azure waters, clean sands, and serene environment. The idol of Sri Rama installed at this temple is believed to have been originally worshipped by Sri Krishna at Dwaraka. When Dwaraka was submerged, the idol of Sri Rama was lying on the sea shore along with the idols of Lakshmana, Bharata and Shaturghna, which was later brought and installed here. This temple is famous for exquisite Wood Carvings, Sculptures and Mural Paintings. During the Onam festival in August / September, there is a snake boat race conducted near the temple in Kornoli kanal.The Ekadashi festival (November - December) is also celebrated in a grand manner at this temple. Guruvayur temple of Kerala is an old temple rousing locals for many centuries. It is a temple dedicated to Lord Guruvayurapan, the child form of Lord Sri Krishna and it is the most important and best temple in Kerala. In the Guruvayurappan temple, there is an idol of Lord Shri Krishna. This idol has too many fortes, making this temple unique. This idol of Lord Shri Krishna has four hands; in the first hand, he holds a conch shell. In the second hand, he holds a Sudarshan chakra; in the third hand, he holds a lotus flower; in the fourth hand, he has a mace. Lord Krishna is revered in the form of a child in that idol. Beautiful paintings depict Lord Sri Krishna’s childhood in the Guruvayurappan temple. Vaikuntha Lok is another name for Guruvayur Temple.

Visiting Time of Guruvayur Temple

Throughout the year, the Guruvayur Temple remains open.

In Guruvayur temple, the doors open at 3:00 in the morning and close at 9:15 in the evening. This temple is very famous in southern India due to its various rituals performed during this time. These rituals, including the morning, afternoon, and evening poojas, can be attended by devotees.

From 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM, the Guruvayur Temple remains closed.

• At 7:00 in the morning, the Palabhishekam (Abhishekam with milk), Navabhishekam (Abhishekam with nine silver pots filled with water), and Pantiradinaivedyam are performed.
• Between 7:30 PM and 8:15 PM, Athazha Pooja and Athazha Naivedyam are performed.
• Between 9 PM and 9:15 PM, the Tripuka (worshipping the shrine with nine sacred gums) and Olavayana (reading out the day’s income and expenditure) take place.
• There is only access to the temple complex for Hindu believers.
• Newly married couples are not permitted to enter the Temple Complex immediately following their wedding.

The Architecture of Guruvayur Temple

A typical example of Kerala’s temple style is the Guruvayoor temple, depicted in an old treatise on architecture (the Vastuvidya). This temple faces towards the East and has 2 Gopurams, one at the West (Padinjarendra) and the other at the East (Kizhakkenada). Anapanthal is the entire area between these Gopurams and is roofed with tiles. There is a square-shaped pillar hall called Nalambalam at the center of the temple, and its outer wall is fixed with a corridor of oil lamps. There is a sub-shrine of Lord Ayyappan or Sastaon on the south side of the Nalambalam.

In the olden times, dance concerts were held in the Koothambalam on the northeast side of this shrine. Bellikkal and Deepastambas – Pillar of Lights are located on the front and east sides of Nalambalam. In the temple, there are numerous such light pillars. There is great interest in the Deepastambas, which are found at the base of each gopuram.

In the Deepastambam on the eastern side, thirteen circular tins hold the wicks, 24 feet in height. At West Gopuram, one of the other two structures is in the shape of a tree. A flagstaff of around 70 feet in height, fully decorated with gold, is known as Dwijasthamba.

Two stairs lead up to the Sreekovil, which is square and has three rooms. Garbhagriha is the innermost room (where the idol of Lord Krishna is found). The two doors and the top of the edifice are covered with gold. In the Garbhagriha, all of the articles are made of gold.

Mukhamandapam is the name of the outer room. There are ancient murals on Sree Kovil dating back to the 17th century. A pyramid-shaped building is situated in front of the Sree Kovil. It is known as the Namaskara Mandapam. An adjacent pillared square hall, called Nalambalam or Chuttambalam, surrounds the temple. There is a gallery of oil lamps mounted on the wall of Nalambalam. Sree Kovil is home to the temple well called Manikinar, located on its north-eastern side. There’s a little shrine to Devi called Edathirithi Kavu on the temple’s north side.

Located on the temple’s north side is Oottupura, the site of Prasadauttu, where fans receive their daily lunch. Near the north side of the temple can be found the temple tank Rudratheertha.

Dress Code for Guruvayur Temple

There are different types of rules for visiting Guruvayur Temple.

• Inside the Temple, Hindus are let in, and no other religion is allowed to take entry.
• Before entering this temple, remove your shoes outside and cover your head completely.
• Entry is allowed to those people who wear only classic dresses. It Is advised that men should not wear shirts inside the temple. Men should wear dhotis and towels and women wear sarees or salwar kameez.
• Visiting the temple’s inner part may take 5-6 hours, depending on the season.
• Electronic devices such as mobile phones, cameras, and other electronic devices are not permitted inside the temple.
• You will find a facility outside the temple for safely storing your footwear. Lockers are also provided for the safe storage of electronic gear.
• There is no entry for leather products.
• In order to maintain the virtue of the temple, outside food and drinks are not permitted.
