- Trivia With the exception of Roy Miller falling off during the rooftop chase in Austria, Tom Cruise did most of the running and jumping without any wire works.
- Goofs When June is taken to Antonio's home in Seville, Spain, the city is celebrating the festival of San Fermin. Part of that is the famous running of the bulls, which happens in Pamplona, not Seville. Pamplona is in northern Spain; Seville is in southern Spain.

- Crazy credits The film's title appears at the very end of the closing credits.
- Alternate versions An 'Extended Cut' is available in Region 2 (UK and Europe), Region 3 (Asia) and Region 4 (Australia & NZ). It adds eight minutes of footage, mostly extended versions of existing scenes, as well as a new opening scene that better establishes June Haven's profession as a mechanic. The 'Extended Cut' was released on Video On Demand in North America, but as of January 2011, it has yet to receive a Region 1 release. (See the FAQ page for more details.)

Movie Reviews

Now streaming on:
"Knight and Day" aspires to the light charm of a romantic action comedy like “Charade” or “ Romancing the Stone ,” but would come closer if it dialed down the relentless action. The romance part goes without saying after a Meet Cute contrived in an airport, and the comedy seems to generate naturally between Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz . But why do so many summer movies find it obligatory to inflict us with CGI overkill? I'd sorta rather see Diaz and Cruise in action scenes on a human scale, rather than have it rubbed in that for long stretches, they're essentially replaced by animation.
Have summer audiences been so hammered down by special effects that they require noise and fragmented visuals to hold their interest? Is it still possible to delight in a story unfolding with charm and wit? How many machine guns do you need in a romantic comedy? If you have charismatic stars like Cruise and Diaz and an A-List director, do you have to hedge your bets?
The movie is entertaining, but could have been better. The director is James Mangold , whose previous two films were " Walk the Line " and " 3:10 to Yuma ." I have a hunch there was an early draft of Patrick O'Neill's script that was more in the Cary Grant rom-com tradition and then somebody decided the effects had to be jacked up. From the ads, you could get the notion this is a Michael Bay film.
The wonder is that Cruise and Diaz are effective enough in their roles that they're not overwhelmed by all the commotion surrounding them. They make the movie work because they cheerfully project that they know it's utter nonsense and pitch in to enjoy the fun. I've been reading that movie stars can no longer “sell” a blockbuster movie. Audiences buy the concept, brand name, packaging, whatever. If that's true, which I doubt, it would mean a victory of technology over humans. If it comes true, it will be because movies have lost interest in creating and shaping characters we care about — because they're using actors as insert shots in special effects.
The plot makes splendid use of a MacGuffin, the device which explains everything by explaining nothing. Roy Miller, the Cruise character, has something, and there are bad guys who want it. I could tell you what it is, but what difference does it make? That's the whole point of a MacGuffin. Anyway, Roy “happens” to run into June Havens, the Diaz character, at an airport, for reasons you will discover. That's the manipulated Meet Cute. Now this next part you will want to follow closely.
They both end up on the same airplane, which has no other passengers, except some men scattered here and there. She goes to the restroom. He kills all the men and both pilots, then sits the dead passengers upright in “Weekend At Bernie's” style. She comes out of the restroom, not having heard the gunshots. He crash-lands the plane in a field and urges her to follow him in escaping FBI agents who are after them.
But ... but ... was there no other way for the bad guys to get the MacGuffin than by taking over a scheduled flight? Maybe, I dunno, snatch him on the ground? How did the FBI know the plane would crash — and where? Also, if you track who has possession of the MacGuffin during various times at the airport, you'll go crazy. Mind you, I'm not complaining. The movie knows this sequence is monumentally silly, and so do Cruise and Diaz, and Cruise keeps up a reassuring line of patter all during it, even while trying to crash-land safely.
That stuff is entertaining. There's also a running joke about how much ground they cover in an international chase. The movie was shot on location in Massachusetts, Spain (where they are chased by bulls), California, Jamaica, Austria and Kankakee, Ill., which has an excellent Steak 'n Shake off Interstate 57. Whether the actors were actually there on all those locations is a good question. Maybe only the green screen stuff was shot on location.
Such matters are irrelevant in a movie that makes not the slightest pretense of realism. Cruise and Diaz are fully scripted throughout with nonstop bantering and one-liners. They never seriously discuss their situation. They spend half the movie in dire danger. Thousands of bullets miss them. By motorcycle, car, train, airplane and parachute, they survive anything.
That girl June, she's a trouper. She follows Roy everywhere and believes everything he says. But ... but ... why does she need to come along? Roy has the MacGuffin. She was a witness, you say? To what? I'll tell you why she has to be along. It's because this is a romantic action comedy starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, that's why.
So all of that I accept, and even applaud, and I observe that Diaz has one of the most winning grins in the movies. Basically, what I wanted was more of it. Some of that Cary Grant dialogue. More flirtation. More of a feeling the characters, not the production, were in the foreground. More of the stars. Because movie stars really do make a difference. I insist on it.

Rotten Tomatoes® Score
It's the Hitchcockian "wrong man" theme played as a Hollywood action lark, all momentum and spectacle and no mortal risk or moral confusion...
Though it won’t hold up under a closer inspection of the plot, its fast-paced nature supplies an almost perfect blend of laughs and action to the summer moviegoer.
Knight and Day moves so fast it's not convenient to mull over where reality ends and the special effects begin. [Full review in Spanish]
An unimaginative recital of car-fueled multiplex cinema... [Full review in Spanish]
With all of these twists, turns, and frequent mood and setting changes, "Knight and Day" comes across as confused to what kind of movie it wants to be.
Bland, forgettable, expensive action...
Having seen the film, I can only shake my head at the studio's optimism.
Cruise and Diaz have a marvelous chemistry.
As a time-waster, Knight and Day is entertaining enough. It sets the bar low then clears it effortlessly. But as I creep into the damning- with-faint-praise department, reviewing this film feels as pointless as watching it.
It's a cute romantic comedy mixed with thrilling action that succeeds in being both fun and entertaining.

Parents need to know that although Knight and Day is a globetrotting action thriller, it has strong comic/romantic undertones and a cheerful, playful tone that makes the violence seem almost inconsequential. And despite the body count, there's very little blood or gore. Expect plenty of flirting between stars…
Positive Messages
The movie's key theme seems to be that if you want to try something exciting, go ahead and try it -- without too much concern for consequences (even when death and killing is involved). And as June starts hearing different stories from different characters, she must learn to follow her heart and trust the right person.
Positive Role Models
Though June eventually finds her footing and her strength, she's very passive for large portions of the story. Roy shoots and kills several bad guys over the course of the movie with no consequences or remorse -- but he's clearly meant to be a good guy who has the best intentions and a positive outlook.
Violence & Scariness
The movie is filled with action violence (much of it played for humor) -- including guns, hand-to-hand combat, and lots of other fighting -- but has little gore or blood. The body count is fairly high, but the impact/consequence of that fact is contrasted by the film's overall light tone. The hero is shot, and viewers see his bloody (but minor) wound. There are also drug-tipped needle darts, several explosions, car chases, motorcycle chases, and bull chases.

Sex, Romance & Nudity
The two main characters are clearly attracted to each other, and there's plenty of flirting and a few major kissing scenes. In an early scene, June preps herself in the bathroom, hoping for some kind of connection with Roy when she emerges. In another scene, the couple rolls around on the beach. In a late scene, June (while under the influence of a truth drug) says, "I'd like to have sex with you. I bet we'd have great sex." Roy changes June into a bikini while she's drugged, which angers her (even though he says he didn't look).

Products & Purchases
A Bud Light ad is visible on the side of a building for a few seconds.
Drinking, Drugs & Smoking
During a tense plane ride in the first section of the movie, June drinks a lot of tequila to calm her nerves; the scene is played for comic effect. Roy also takes a drink. The agents are also always slipping various drugs to each other; June gets a "knockout" drug twice and a truth serum once.
Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Drinking, Drugs & Smoking in your kid's entertainment guide.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that although Knight and Day is a globetrotting action thriller, it has strong comic/romantic undertones and a cheerful, playful tone that makes the violence seem almost inconsequential. And despite the body count, there's very little blood or gore. Expect plenty of flirting between stars Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise and a little kissing, with some brief talk about sex. There's also some drinking (including one scene in which Diaz's character gets drunk on tequila), and various "spy" drugs are introduced throughout the movie. Neither of the main characters are depicted as strongly positive role models for teens, but that's not what the movie is about, either -- ultimately, it's meant to be a fun adventure for adults and older kids. Great movie!
No review here, what's the story.
June Havens ( Cameron Diaz ) leads a normal life, loves restoring classic cars, and looks forward to going to her sister's wedding. Then, at the airport, she bumps into the dashing Roy Miller ( Tom Cruise ) and winds up on a strange, near-empty flight with him. It turns out that he's a secret agent, and she's been mistaken for one, too. Now Roy must take June through a myriad of complex chases and escapes, each involving a powerful new battery and the young scientist ( Paul Dano ) who invented it. The unlikely duo must also stay two steps ahead of FBI man Fitzgerald ( Peter Sarsgaard ), and June must eventually decide who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Will she ever reach safety again? And, more importantly, after meeting Roy, will she ever want to?
Is It Any Good?
Director James Mangold found his footing with his last movie -- 2007's brisk, well-told Western 3:10 to Yuma -- and he repeats the feat here with this romantic spy tale. He gives the material a cheerful, playful quality and focuses on the story's humor and romance, with the action and violence tucked into the background. The movie's high body count ultimately doesn't really hit very hard; there's a distinct lack of blood or gore, and very few consequences to the action (which makes for a fun movie, if a somewhat iffy takeaway for younger audiences).
By focusing specifically on June's point of view and deliberately missing some of the big action moments as she hides out or sleeps, Mangold and writer Patrick O'Neill give the movie an interesting perspective -- it's a choice that celebrates imagination over spectacle. And Cruise and Diaz both seem refreshed here -- both are at their charming best.

25 Questions You May Have About Knight and Day
By Mike Ryan
Knight and Day is Tom Cruise’s first film in two years. We know it's been a while, so you may have forgotten what it's like to watch Cruise on screen as an action star (and not a hirsute vulgarian film producer or a self-hating Nazi). As a service, we answer every possible question you could have about Knight and Day.
Q: Knight and Day was originally titled Wichita. Is the film set in Wichita? Is Emma Stone's character from Zombieland in the film?
A: A brief opening scene takes place at the Wichita airport. In retrospect, this would be like titling Toy Story 3 "Andy's Bedroom." Emma Stone is nowhere to be found.
Q: Why is it called Knight and Day?
A: Cruise goes by the name of Roy Miller during the film. His parents, who we meet briefly, have the last name Knight.
Q: Roy Miller? Is this a biopic of Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Roy Miller? Does Sandra Bullock make a cameo?
A: There is absolutely zero correlation between Knight and Day and The Blind Side.
Q: What about the "Day" part of the title?
A: Well ... Cameron Diaz's name in the film is June. The month of June contains days? Honestly, I have no idea.
Q: So what is the relationship between Cruise and Diaz in the film?
A: Cruise is a federal agent who has gone rogue. At the Wichita airport he meets Diaz, who's in town buying used auto parts and unwittingly gets caught up in Cruise's plan.
Q: So Cruise is basically playing Ethan Hunt?
A: I would say Ethan Hunt mixed with a smidgen of MacGruber. There are a lot of, "O.K., just follow my plan and we'll get out of this alive, I promise," type conversations right before something goes haywire.
Q: Like MacGruber, does Cruise resort to sticking a piece of celery up his rectum in an effort to distract the enemy?
A: That seems less preposterous than some of his actual plans.
Q: It's hard to tell from the trailers, is Cruise a good guy or a bad guy?
A: Oh, come on. Have you never seen a Tom Cruise film before? Other than Collateral, I mean? To be fair, it is complicated. And that's what makes the first half of the movie fun. Once it's not complicated, it stops being fun.
Q: Well, that sounds vague. Considering all other Tom Cruise films, in terms of quality, what does Knight and Day most compare with?
A: I'd put it somewhere in-between Legend and Taps.
Q: Does Cruise wear sunglasses and sprint at some point in the film?
A: Again, have you never seen a Tom Cruise film before? Other than Lions for Lambs, I mean?
Q: So what is all the fuss about in the film?
A: Everyone wants the Zephyr. A young prodigy, Simon Feck (Paul Dano)—who REALLY loves the song "Private Eyes" by Hall & Oates—created a battery-sized power source powerful enough to supply energy to an entire city.
Q: Wow, that sounds like a dangerous item. I would bet that if it became unstable and exploded, it could probably wipe out the Eastern Seaboard.
A: Or blow up a small helicopter.
Q: What do you have against Hall & Oates?
A: A lot, actually. I don't like how they're listed in all the record books as "The Most Successful Duo of All Time." How are they a duo? In every video, including for “Private Eyes,” they have a whole backing band. How is this fair to compare to legitimate duos? Also, how is this a duo when Oates only sang lead on one of their 29 Top-40 hits? Admittedly, Big Bam Boom is a great album.
Q: What's the best part about Knight and Day?
A: The first hour of the film is actually pretty fun. One of the opening scenes takes place on an flight from Wichita to Boston which turns out to be quite thrilling, if you're someone who finds the rapid decent of a commercial airliner thrilling and not nauseating because you have a flight scheduled anytime in the next month.
By Chris Murphy
By Savannah Walsh
Q: What's the worst part of Knight and Day?
A: There are two. June (Diaz) is safely at home after a whirlwind tour of the world and she makes a phone call declaring that she has the Zephyr. In fact, she doesn't. She only says this because getting captured is the only way she can find Roy, whom she misses, and will almost certainly rescue her. Also, Roy has a habit of drugging June when she can't handle a situation. When he runs out of drugs, he uses a Vulcan nerve pinch to knock her out for a few hours. When did Star Trek fiction seep so deeply into the fabric of our lives that it's accepted as reality?
Q: Whirlwind tour of the world? Do they visit Germany in Knight and Day?
Q: Wasn't Tom Cruise's last film set in Germany?
A: Yes. I believe you're thinking of Valkyrie.
Q: Is there a scene in Knight and Day that rivals the one where Cruise dances around in his underwear? What movie was that?
A: I believe the dancing-in-his-underwear scene was also in Valkyrie. There is a scene of a shirtless Cruise on a small tropical island that causes painful involuntary flashbacks of Cocktail.
Q: In Knight and Day, how many crows fly out of Tom Cruise's mouth?
Q: In Jonah Hex, how many crows fly out of Josh Brolin's mouth?
Q: Is Knight and Day better than the Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston film, Bounty Hunter?
Q: Is Knight and Day better than the Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl film, Killers?
A: I've never seen Killers because it wasn't screened in advance. But, yes. Also, I look forward to the day when these films are packaged together as a "Three Pack!" for sale at Best Buy.
Q: Is Knight and Day better than Toy Story 3?
A: Is your name Armond White?
A: Then, no, it's not.
Q: If you wanted to be blurbed during the television commercials for Knight and Day, what would be your quote?
A: "If you could only see one movie the rest of your life—and your only choices are Bounty Hunter, Killers, and Knight and Day—go see Knight and Day!" —Mike Ryan, Vanity Fair.

Screen Rant's Vic Holtreman reviews Knight and Day
Well we're in popcorn movie season and Knight and Day aspires to do no more than fit that bill. In it we have the return of Tom Cruise to the role of movie action hero for the first time since Mission Impossible III , and as a sidekick we're given Cameron Diaz (whose last film other than playing the voice of Fiona in the Shrek films was awful movie The Box ).
Cruise plays Roy Miller, a fellow with "skills" - and we don't really know if he's a good guy, a bad guy, or a good guy posing as a bad guy. We're introduced to him (all cool and suave) at the airport, and as a counterpoint we are then shown Diaz' character June Havens, who seems to be oh-so-average with a bit of klutzy thrown in. He bumps into her seemingly by mistake, they exchange pleasantries and part ways only to bump into each other again before boarding a plane.
There's some spy-stuff stuff afoot with Miller being watched by some guys who seem to be government agents. It seems that June wasn't going to be able to get on the full flight, but the agents assume something is up between her and Roy and that it's not happenstance that they bumped into each other twice. Last minute she gets on the plane and Roy is not too happy about it.
Turns out the plane is almost empty, apparently it was booked up by the government except for a few passengers. As an aside, in light of this it seems extremely odd that she would be able to book a ticket on that flight in the first place. Anyway, some light conversation develops between June and Roy, and as charming as he is she soon warms up to him. She heads off to the bathroom to freshen up and while she's gone major mayhem ensues between Roy and the other men on the plane. When she returns, she throws herself at him in a fit of impulsiveness and it takes her a while to figure out just what exactly happened while she was in the bathroom.
Well Cruise is his usual charming (yes, I realize I keep using that word) and confident self and keeps her calm in what would be a very unnerving situation. Upon landing he warns her that some people from the government might come looking for her and if they do that she is NOT to trust them. NEVER get in a vehicle with them, he says, and the more they tell you that they're taking you to a secure location where you'll be safe, the more you can be certain that they're going to kill you.
They get separated and of course the men in dark suits and black vehicles show up and ask her to get in the car. This is on a busy city street. Does she try to run? No. Does she cry out to passers-by for help? No. Does she quietly get into the car? Yes. Is she an idiot? Yes indeedy.
Eventually he's got to rescue her, apparently because he has a heart of gold and she was brought into this situation by mistake. They ended up joined at the hip (so to speak) and go from one adventure/chase scene to the next as Roy tries to stay ahead of those who are on his tail.
There are car chases, motor cycle chases, gun battles, hand to hand fighting, exotic locales, etc. All the requisite items you'd hope to see in a summer blockbuster. Tom Cruise is, for me, usually fun to watch on screen and he is so here. This is the sort of role he plays so well: Cocky, devil-may-care and supremely able to handle any situation that comes his way. He's what we want an action hero to be, and it's great seeing him in this sort of role once again.
On the other hand we have Cameron Diaz... from the first few minutes that she's on screen I found myself thinking "I really, really wish they had cast someone else in her role." As in other films in which she's appeared, she just seems shallow and one-dimensional. There doesn't seem to be a millimeter of depth to her character, and to make things worse her character is completely annoying. I get what they were trying to convey - the "fish out of water" that ends up being funny through her reactions to what is happening around her. Unfortunately she was just annoying instead - picture Kate Capshaw's supremely annoying character from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom ( Indy 2 ) and you'll be on the right track. Overall her presence in the film was enough to seriously detract from my enjoyment of it, even just on the level of a popcorn action flick.
Director James Mangold keeps the action going, almost sensing that he'd better not allow the audience to get bored or to spend too much time getting deep into the characters. Considering I didn't want to spend much time with one of them, I had no problem with his work.
If Cameron Diaz doesn't bother you and you're a fan of Tom Cruise as action hero, then you'll probably enjoy Knight and Day . If you're looking for an action movie with a little meat on its bones or aren't a fan of either actor, give it a pass or save it for a rental.

How Much Tom Cruise Made For The Original 'Top Gun' Versus How Much He Made For 'Top Gun: Maverick'
Posted: May 9, 2024 | Last updated: May 9, 2024
The legacy of "Top Gun" is one of action, adventure, and dedication to pushing the limits. Those are all things that Tom Cruise has taken to heart in developing his own career as well, as anyone can see by tracking the path he’s taken over his decades of experience. One could even say the same about the salaries he’s been able to command, as comparing how much he made between the original outing and its legacy-quel "Top Gun: Maverick" is the difference between night and day. (But that has nothing to do with the Tom Cruise film Knight and Day.)

Netflix movie of the day: Born on the Fourth of July is a harrowing movie with an extraordinary Tom Cruise performance
The movie where Tom Cruise showed he was more than just a pretty face
For many actors, the pivot to Oscar-bait "serious movies" after making lots of money from more lightweight fare is a well-worn cliché. But as Roger Ebert wrote in 1989, "nothing [Tom] Cruise has done will prepare you for what he does in Born on the Fourth of July ... his performance is so good that the movie lives through it".
In Born on the Fourth July , which is now streaming on Netflix , Cruise plays Ron Kovic, who fought in Vietnam and came home paralyzed from the waist down. The film is based on his memoir, and it's directed by another veteran, Oliver Stone. What emerges is a powerful, visceral and haunting story about what happens when young men go to war – and what happens to them when they come home.
- Watch Born on the Fourth of July on Netflix
War is hell
As Ebert explains, both Kovic and Stone were "gung-ho patriots who were eager to answer their country's call to arms". And despite everything they experienced, they returned from Vietnam as patriots – patriots who were offended and angered by the hostility they experienced from the anti-war movement. But Kovic's experiences back home were horrendous – and some of them are shown here in excruciating detail – and he began spiralling into self-destruction. The film follows him all the way to rock bottom, and sticks with him as he attempts to climb back up.
It's an extraordinary, heartbreaking film that's much smarter and more thoughtful than most war movies. Stone came to this movie after making Platoon , and Born on the Fourth of July is a kind of smarter, more nuanced sequel in its portrayal not just of the horrors of war, but the horrors of post-war life.
Pauline Kael of The New Yorker hated it, but she was in the minority of critics alongside the Washington Post , which said that while it was "an impassioned movie, made with conviction and evangelical verve. It's also hysterical and overbearing and alienating".
Variety described Cruise's performance as "stunning", and Rolling Stone said that "Stone has found in Cruise the ideal actor to anchor the movie with simplicity and strength". Time Out called it a "compelling, elegiac film, particularly encouraging after the simplified morality of Platoon ". And for The New York Times , it was "the most ambitious non-documentary film yet made about the entire Vietnam experience".
