What to Know Before Visiting Totumo Mud Volcano

There were other things that nobody told me before I headed to the Totumo mud volcano, things I would have been glad to know before I go, which is why I’m going to share six of them with you right here:

totumo mud volcano advertisement

1. You’ll get up close and personal with strangers

The Totumo mud volcano is actually closer to a puddle of mud than anything else, but picture a really really deep one, maybe even bottomless. If you take a tour to Totumo, like most people do, because it’s the cheapest and easiest way from Cartagena, you and 16 fellow mud enthusiasts will change into their swimsuits and head up the ‘volcano’.

One by one, you’ll descend into the mud, slowly going down a ladder from the top, because the mud is much lower than shown in the pretty advertising posters around town. The mud used to reach up to the top of the ‘volcano’, and I’m not sure where it all went but you have to descend a good 20-16 feet (6-8 meters) now to get into the creamy, smelly mud.

Considering that there are several guys selling bottles of this good ol’ mud at the bottom of the volcano, they might have sold all the mud that used to fill up the volcano, but who knows. Anyway, once you’re in the mud, be prepared to be groped by some Colombian dudes who are spending all day waiting inside this mud hole, eager to massage white people for a small fee (COP4,000).

One by one, the rest of your group will join you, or maybe you are one of the lucky ones last in line, looking down skeptically on everyone floating in the mud, wondering if you really want to get in there. But as the mud hole fills up, you’ll quickly befriend everybody else because you all realize what a ridiculous situation you are in, and the fuller it gets, the closer you’ll get to everyone. I felt quite a few hairy legs, boobs, feet and other body parts while I was floating around, thinking to myself how weird it was that I wasn’t sinking.

2. You might not make it out alive

Once you decide that you’ve had enough, you will try to make your way out of the mud, which now that the mud hole is quite deep means relying on a rickety old wooden ladder, which is extremely slippery, thanks to all the mud monsters who’ve made their way out of there before you. So hold onto the rails for your dear life – literally! The story of how you conquered a mud volcano is a good one, but you have to make it out alive to live to tell it.

When people wonder if it is safe to travel in Colombia , I usually tell them that my visit to Totumo mud volcano was one of the scariest moments of my trip to Colombia.

3. Prepare to be studied and stared at

massaged or groped?

Instead, the Latinos walk up to the rim, stare at the gringos (including you!), snap your picture, and then walk down again after pointing at you and chatting about you with their fellow observers. They’re probably thinking: Why the hell do these gringos pay so much money to get into this stinky puddle, ruin their swimsuits in mud and get their hair all muddy?

It feels particularly humiliating when you’re the one who is in the process of emerging from the mud, looking like a mud monster, and have a guy grope you to get some of the mud off you with his hands before you make your way down to the cleaning area… Yes, cleaning area.

4. Lots of groping!

Even though there is a huge lake next to the Totumo mud volcano, you can’t just jump in and wash the mud off – it is too shallow, and so the business-savvy Colombians who live around here set up a few giant jars near the lake which some guys keep filling with bucket loads of green water that they get out of the lake.

When you arrive there, a lady will grab you and start washing the mud off you with the help of a little bowl, in which she puts the green lake water from the big jar. These ladies are also not afraid to touch your private parts, and I’m sure the lady who washed me enjoyed my boobs, that’s how intensely she was rubbing them.

5. You’ll hand out tips right and left

Once you’re released, you go back to your belongings which are stored in a little storage room while you frolic in the mud, and suddenly, everyone who has helped you with something, appears and wants to be tipped. The guy who held your camera? $1. The lady who washed you? $1. The kid who watched your shoes? $1. The guy who massaged you? $1 (amazingly cheap massage, btw!).

6. Mmmmh that smell…

When you’re finally back in the van, you’ll be able to enjoy the sulfur smell for another hour (at least, depending on traffic in Cartagena) because you think they cleaned you, but as a matter of fact you’ll still find mud in the most random body parts for days (if you’re one of the lucky ones whose accommodation in Cartagena has hot water: this is when you’ll truly appreciate it!)

Practical Information to Visit Totumo Mud Volcano

Do you have to take a tour to get to the totumo mud volcano.

Yes, you can take a cab to the volcano if you don’t like crowds. If you time it right (early afternoon would be best, I think, before the arrival of the afternoon group), you’ll most likely have the volcano all to yourself. It’s worth it if you are a group of four people; expect to pay at least COP200,000 for the cab, including return to Cartagena and the driver waiting for you while you splash around in the mud.

Are there different tour companies offering this tour?

At the moment, there’s only one tour company who runs this tour if you book it in Cartagena: Ruta ecologica. You can book the trip from most hotels and hostels and your offices around town. Pickup is usually where you book it. The price (COP45,000/ around US$14) includes transportation and a snack of fresh watermelon after the mud bath. The company has a little area with changing rooms, toilets and showers (don’t expect more than a trickle) right next to the volcano, complete with lockers where you can lock up your valuables. GetYourGuide is offering a few mud volcano tours, check them out here:

What to bring / what not to bring to the Mud Volcano

Water & Sunscreen The volcano itself doesn’t offer any shade, so make sure you bring sunscreen and water to stay hydrated. There are some kiosks and small roadside restaurants around the volcano where you can buy snacks and soft drinks or beers after the experience.

Money Bring enough cash (and small change) to cover all your tips, but I wouldn’t bring too much cash or any valuables that you don’t need (credit cards, jewelry, etc).

In this local guide, I am going to give you all the secrets of the Totumo Mud Volcano of Colombia and uncover why this magical place deserves to be a part of any traveler’s Colombian journey.

COLOMBIAN MUD BATH

First off, what is the mud volcano aka el totumo of colombia.

PICTURE: Visit the smallest volcano in Colombia, which is located 1 hour and 15 minutes from Cartagena, Colombia.

No, El Totumo volcano is not a real volcano that emits hot molten lava or smoke, but rather  a hill that is 50 feet (15 meters) tall, with an opening in the middle filled inside with mud.

So, as you enter the opening, you will encounter this dense mud that will help you stay afloat.

The mud on the volcano is located based on its level of activity. Applying the mud on your face and the entire body is believed to have therapeutic qualities for a complete experience.

Some people view the El Totumo Mud Volcano as a tourist trap due to the large crowds of tourists trying to access a small area.

However, if you pick the right time to go, you may be able to arrive and have the opportunity to enjoy this one-of-a-kind and enjoyable experience without any other visitors around.

Just so you’re aware, the volcano can accommodate a maximum of 10-15 people at one time.

According to a local legend, Totumo volcano used to erupt with fire and molten lava. However, a local priest who believed it was connected to the work of the devil: sprinkled holy water on it, transforming it into the muddy attraction it is today.

If you’re considering visiting the mud volcano of Colombia, it’s an unique experience, but it’s not necessarily an authentic cultural activity.

How to See El Volcano Totumo Day Trip

After looking at pictures of the mud volcano filled with people, I understand why some individuals did not have a pleasant experience there. The primary cause for the large crowds seems to be the fact that it is a popular destination for group tours. ~Jessica (Tour reviews)

I will first explain what a group tour typically includes, then suggest a do-it-yourself option that I strongly recommend.

Is Cartagena a walkable city?

A) Book A Group Tour (Round-Trip Transport)

The group tour has two departure times, approximately 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM,  for a fee of around $30 . Please note that even if your pickup time is 8:00 AM, it may take an additional hour drive before leaving Cartagena as the van will be picking up other passengers along the way.

After you have prepared yourself, you will embark on an hour-long ride to the volcano. During the tour, you will be in close proximity to other members of your group within the volcano. The tour may be expedited to accommodate the next group of visitors.

After getting washed up, you will drive for an hour and drop off other people on your way back.

If you choose to join the tour group, the activity that can be completed in under 3 hours with the DIY option will take approximately 5 or more hours.

This tour  is inexpensive and overall you are going to have such a great time!

“One of my favorite experiences so far was a tour led by Jose who spoke both Spanish and English. We went straight to the volcano and climbed about 25 steps to the top. Once there, we entered the volcanic mud bath where village men helped us in and gave us brief massages. The mud density made it necessary to have their assistance. Afterwards, we climbed back down and walked to the lake where village women rinsed the mud off of us, which was also a great sensation. After washing up, we indulged in some amazing empanadas from Santandel during my trip. He was a gracious host and the experience was magical. I would definitely do it again. Overall, it was a 10/10 unique experience that I will never forget.” ~Guest, January 2024 (Tour review)

Let's dive into a deep understanding whether if is 100$ a lot of money in Colombia!

B) Do It Yourself!

You can have a better experience if you make the journey to the volcano on your own, as it will help you avoid the crowds, long rides, and feeling rushed to leave.

Now that you are aware that most Cartagena Mud Volcano tour leave the walled city at 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM, what if you rent a car for the day instead of joining a tour? This is going to be more affordable than the tour itself. Also, give you peace on exploring the area on your own time!

🚘 RENTAL CAR ➡️ Book It Now!

If you drive for an hour from Cartagena, you’ll reach El Totumo volcano around 2 PM. You should be the only one there, but later on, expect some people to show up.

At the volcano site, there is a changing room and lockers available. After changing into your bathing suit, you proceeded to climb up to the top of the volcano.

The employees at that place have a systematic process – one person receives your shoes while another one takes pictures with your phone or camera becoming your camera man.

If you’re inside the volcano, you can choose to get a quick massage. The length of the massage depends on your luck and the number of people present. If you’re the only one there, they will massage you for around 10 minutes. But if you’re with a large group, the massage may only last a couple of minutes.

After your massage, you can relax for an extra 15 minutes by floating in the mud. Once your time is up, you will be washed down.

At the bottom of the volcano, there will be women who can wash you off either on the spot or in the nearby lake. They are experienced in scrubbing off mud and will get every last bit of it off your entire body.

After getting cleaned up, it’s time to tip the people who helped you today. This includes the person who took your shoes, the photographer, your masseuse, and the cleaning staff.

You are now free to go back to Cartagena or keep exploring the rest of Colombia in your own car. Are you heading to Tayrona National Park?

Things You Need to Know Before Visiting Totumo Mud Volcano

Before I visited the Totumo mud volcano of Colombia, there were some things that I wish someone had told me beforehand. Therefore Giorgy is here to help you and share with you four things about visiting Totumo Mud Volcano.

Let's get deep into details of the Totumo Mud Volcano

1. You Will Interact Intimately with Strangers

To visit Totumo volcano, a popular destination from Cartagena, many people opt for a tour. Once there, you and 16 other visitors will put on swimsuits and climb the “volcano.”

You will then descend into the mud one by one using a ladder, which goes down about 20-16 feet (6-8 meters).

As the mud natural pool fills up, you will naturally become better acquainted with the other visitors since the more it fills, the closer everyone gets to each other.

2. The Washing Area

When you get there, a woman will help clean the mud off your entire body using a small bowl filled with green water from a large jar. Please note that these women may also touch your private areas.

If they see a lot of mud on your swimsuit, they may remove it without hesitation.

In order to prevent unpleasantly situation, you might want to learn some basic Spanish such as saying “ Don’t touch me there, please” ~ “No me toca porfavor!”

Learn how to speak Spanish like a pro!

I’ll send you a FREE guide that will boost your Spanish language skills. Get the glossary Spanish guide by subscribing below.

3. Don’t Forget to Tips

Don’t forget to tips to everyone that helped you! The camera men, the lady who washed you, the kid who watched your shoes, and the guy who massaged you.

You should give each of them a tip of COP 4,500, which is equivalent to $1 USD. These are the additional cost you are going to encounter!

4. New Parfume: the Sulfure Smell.

You will still be able to smell sulfur for at least the whole duration of your trip, depending on Cartagena’s traffic.

Although you may feel clean, you may still find mud on various body parts for several days. If you are fortunate enough to have accommodations with hot water in Cartagena, you will truly appreciate it.

How Much Does the Mud Volcano in Cartagena Cost?

When you choose to take a tour of the Mud Volcano  (it costs around $30 USD) , the entrance fee to the volcano is already included.

However, you will need to pay extra for the services of the person who takes your photos (COP 4’500 ~ USD $1), the person who gives you a massage (COP 4’500 ~ USD $1), the kid who cleaned your shoes (COP 4’500 ~ USD $1) the woman who washes you after the tour (COP 4’500 ~ USD $1).

So, you are going to make it for approximately $35 USD per Person!

If you opt to do it yourself, these are the costs to keep in mind.

🚘 Renting a car:  COP 200’000 (USD $45)

🌋 Entrance to Totumo Mud Volcano:  Adults are charged COP 15,000 (USD $3.50) while kids aged 2 years and older are charged COP 10,000 (USD $2.25).

🪙 Tipping all the people:  Each person COP 4’5000 (USD $1). Total of $4 USD!

☕ Optional Beverage: COP 3’000 (USD $0.90).

The price per person depends on how many people you are. But in the end, the experience’s uniqueness is priceless!

My Mud Volcano Totumo Experience

During my first trip to Colombia, I went on a day trip tour to this popular mud pit attraction. Even though it was a touristy activity, I had a great time.

I have included a portion of my travel journal entry about El Totumo volcano so that you can have a better idea of what to anticipate and determine whether or not this is an experience that interests you.

Prior to my arrival in Colombia, I had already heard about the famous “mud volcano”  (rather a crazy mud pit)  and decided that it was a must-see attraction.

So, the following morning, I joined a group of locals and foreigners on an air-conditioned bus and we all eagerly anticipated the adventure ahead. After an hour-long drive , here we are at El Volcan del Totumo.

We reached the top and peered down at a muddy pit where  there were people covered in mud who seemed like “mud monsters,” laughing and playing.  One of our group members likened the sight to a catfish moving in a watering hole, which was a fairly accurate description.

Do you understand why everyone is laughing at you when you coming out of the mud volcano?

When it was my turn, I went down the wooden staircase into a pit that was full of people, stickiness and mud, and finally understood why everyone was laughing.

As soon as I arrived, a local man welcomed me and helped me slide across the muddy ground on my back to other men who gave me “massages”.

While I found it somewhat soothing, I experienced some discomfort as the man massaged my upper thighs and stomach.

While I was receiving a massage near the mud pit, another man took a dozen pictures with my camera. Once I finished the massage, I went to the other side of the volcano and joined in on the fun and laughter with the others.

Even though the people in the pit were diverse in age, linguistic and cultural backgrounds, we all seemed to be the same once we jumped in. We giggled, splashed, floated and got covered in mud!

According to my tour guide, the mud contains silica, magnesium, sulfur, and iron which are enriched with therapeutic qualities and healing properties .

Although I didn’t feel my skin was rejuvenated after immersing in the mud, I cannot deny the  unique sensation of weightlessly floating on the dense mud,  which was an experience unlike any other. However, I am still unsure if I am convinced of its healing properties.

I climbed out of the pit using a slippery ladder after enjoying some time splashing and floating around. Then, I headed towards a nearby lagoon where local women were patiently waiting to wash me. It was quite an interesting experience.

A woman came up to me and poured a bucket of water over my head, and then did it a few more times. She also cleaned out the mud from my ears and nose with her fingers. Then, she proceeded to clean my swimsuit and scrubbed me until I was clean.

Lol ready for a life time experience of let someone else remove the mud from your body?

People who offer to take pictures of you, give massages, and remove the mud from your whole body at the volcano, are from an impoverished town nearby. Therefore make sure to give an appropriate tip as mentioned above if you go on this trip.

The group went to a rustic restaurant on the beach after giving tips to locals.

While our food was being prepared, we went for a swim in the ocean. Afterward, we had a traditional Colombian meal consisting of rice, salad, plátanos (smashed, fried plantains), and your choice of chicken or fish.

The best way to end my visit to the mud volcano of Colombia was by enjoying a delicious meal while watching the waves.

FAQs: Some Practical Information for Visiting Totumo Mud Volcano

Trusting colombian.

Yes of course! I was concerned about whether you can trust Colombian or not, but you can! Our group’s camera man carried a lot of expensive equipment including phones, GoPro’s, dSLRs, and regular cameras in a fanny pack and a neck strap.

He will take 10 to 15 pictures of you, and I also took a few extra using my own camera before we left. If you want to have a picture of yourself covered in mud, you have to give your camera to him.

My tour guide informed me that the depth of the mud is more than 7,500 feet (2,300 meters).

However, sinking is not an issue as the thick mud is extremely buoyant. Visitors can descend into the pit using a wooden staircase in a clean state and come out looking like they have been covered in gray chocolate.

Can You Swim in a Mud Volcano?

Swimming in a mud volcano can sound scary, but it is actually impossible to sink due to the consistency of the mud. So, whether you’re a strong swimmer or not, you can enjoy the unique experience without worrying.

Is It Safe to Touch Mud Volcano?

A mud volcano resembles a traditional volcano, but it emits cold mud instead of hot lava. Additionally, the mud is cool to the touch.

Is Mud Volcano Safe?

Mud volcanoes are mostly harmless, although they can occasionally have powerful eruptions. But El Totumo Mud Volcano is as safe as visiting Cartagena!

What are Unique Qualities of the Totumo Volcano in Colombia?

The benefits of bathing in a mud volcano include: drawing out impurities from the skin, exfoliating dead skin cells, relaxing sore muscles and joints, improving skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, and relieving pain from rheumatoid arthritis.

Are Mud Volcanoes Hot or Cold?

While some mud volcanoes are connected to heat, these are typically only shallow ones that release warm mud onto the surface. Most mud volcanoes, however, are cold.

What to Bring and Not Bring With

Old bikini It is recommended to bring an old bikini, unless you can wash it on the same day. The mud can be very difficult to get rid of, so it’s better not to wear your favorite swimsuit.

Water & Sunscreen Remember to bring sunscreen and water to stay hydrated at the volcano since there is no shade available. You can purchase snacks, soft drinks, or beers from the kiosks or small roadside restaurants near the volcano after the unique experience.

Enough Cash Bring only the necessary amount of Colombian pesos to cover your tips. Avoid bringing excess cash and any valuable items that you do not need, such as credit cards or jewelry.

SonjaM – 01/04/2014

We did a tour of Cartegena and the nearby volcano in January 2014 with Martin Rosales. It was a very comprehensive tour and he was very knowledgeable. He was also very patient as we had a toddler with us who was obviously slower at times and had the odd tantrum! It was also nice that his car had air-conditioning as it was very hot. The only downside was that the tour was fairly expensive and as we did several tours with him the cost added up quickly.

Watersiders – 06/27/2014

“We had the trip to the mud volcano; and this tour guide was truly the best! We were expecting a big tourist bus, but we were surprised with a private car and proper attention! Not only did we get information about the mud volcano, but on the ride there Mr Rosales told us alot of different things about Cartagena. We couldn’t have asked for more! Great recommendation!”

lizac544 – 08/26/2014

Martin was very knowledgeable. He was patient and went into a lot of detail. He was friendly and allowed us to take as many pictures as we wanted. I would definitely recommend using him as your tour guide!

KachMedina-Howe – 06/05/2015

“There are not many places in the world that you can quite literally climb inside a small active volcano, filled with natural mud and bubbling with volcanic gases, but you can here and it’s one of the best things to do in Cartagena Colombia. Less than a one hour drive outside of the city towards Baranquila sits the El Totumo volcano, a modest volcano by any standards, more like a small hill, filled warm mud! But don’t be fooled, because beneath that mud, this little giant is surprisingly active, constantly pushing out giant gas bubbles which explode on the surface. Martin arranged everything and picked us up at the hotel so all we had to do was enjoy. For only 10,000 Pesos ($4) you can climb down into the crater, floating in the mud while being massaged with volcanic medicinal goodness. Once the massage is done, you can relax in the revitalizing sludge until you’re ready to get out. When you finally do climb out, covered in grey mud, there’s another surprise ready for you. Walk down to the edge of the nearby lagoon, sit down in the water and a local Colombian lady will be there, waiting for you, with a bowl, to thoroughly wash you down until there’s no mud left – anywhere! It’s a once in a lifetime experience that will never be forgotten. And you’ll have silky smooth skin too! Martin was fantastic the whole day, with so much great knowledge about Cartagena and a brilliant personality to tell it with. On the way back he stopped to let us watch the sunset on a beach just outside of the city, which was a great way to finish the day. Thanks Martin, will definitely recommend you to everyone we meet heading to Cartagena!”

The El Totumo Mud Volcano of Cartagena (Complete Guide & Tour Info)

The El Totumo Mud Volcano of Cartagena (Complete Guide & Tour Info)

When researching some of the top things to do in Cartagena you are bound to come across the Mud Volcano of Colombia also known as El Totumo.

You will see some people call it a tourist trap, a waste of time, or it is just not worth it. I came across those same opinions when deciding if I should include it in my Colombia itinerary.

But as I thought more about it, I just could not let these reviews get in my way of entering into a volcano and having a massage while floating in mud. I thought of it as a unique experience that I did not want to pass up.

I wrote this guide to give you an idea of what to expect during a trip to El Totumo and help answer any questions or concerns you may have.

1) What is the Mud Volcano of Colombia?

Now this isn’t your massive rock formation spewing lava, so don’t expect to see anything like that. It’s more so just a 50 foot (15 meter) hill with an opening in the middle.

In that opening though you will find this dense mud that will keep you afloat as you wade around it.

Depending on the “activity” of the volcano, the mud might be close to the top or be lower down (where a ladder can help get you to the mud itself). When looking at pictures you might see the difference between the two.

This mud is thought to have healing properties so feel free to rub it all over your face and body to get the full experience!

As mentioned though, the El Totumo Mud Volcano can be seen as a tourist trap for visitors of Cartagena. Due to this it can sway people to not waste their time going to a spot where there will just be hoards of tourists all trying to get into a small area.

I can say from experience though, that this is not always the case. As I will go over in this overview, you instead could arrive and be the only ones there to have this unique and fun and experience!

Below are some quick facts about the El Totumo Mud Volcano and what it is all about:

  • Name : El Totumo (translates to “Mud Volcano’)
  • Location : Santa Catalina, Colombia
  • Distance from Cartagena : 1 hour / 34 miles (55 km)
  • Height & Depth : 50 feet (15 meters) high, but rumored to be 7,500 feet (2,300 meters) deep!
  • Benefits : Nutrient rich & therapeutic mud that can result in softer skin, improved skin conditions, and overall relaxation (note there are differing opinions on this!)
  • Best Time : 7:00AM – 8:00AM (Open from 7:00AM – 5:00PM)
  • Capacity : 10-15 people
  • Fun Fact : El Totumo is the smallest volcano in Colombia
  • How to Visit : Group Tour, Private Tour, DIY (Taxi)

2) Entrance Fee & Pricing

The total all in cost for the day will heavily depend on what type of experience you take part of – group tour, private tour, or do it yourself option.

Below is a high level overview of the various cost considerations at play to get a better idea of what to expect from a price perspective.

  • Group Tour : $65 USD per person
  • Private Tour : $95 USD per person (minimum ~2+ people)
  • Do It Yourself Taxi Round Trip Cost : $70 USD (split among your group)
  • Entrance Fee : $5 USD (20,000 COP) – included with tour options
  • Massage Fee : $2.50 USD (10,000 COP)
  • Photo Fee : $2.50 USD (10,000 COP)
  • Cleaning Fee : $2.50 USD (5,000 COP)

Pricing Note : these additional fees can vary around ~$2 or so, and can alter slightly over time. I would recommend bringing a bunch of small change for tips throughout the day.

3) Location of El Totumo Mud Volcano

El Totumo is not located in Cartagena itself, rather it is about an hour or so north of the city in the municipality of Santa Catalina.

The map below shows the route that you will take as you make your way up the coast and towards the Mud Volcano of Colombia.

4) How to Visit El Totumo

I can see why some people did not enjoy their time at the mud volcano, especially when seeing pictures of it packed inside. The main reason for these crowds is the group tour aspect of it.

Below I will go over what a group tour would entail followed by a do it yourself option or private tour that I would highly recommend to avoid the crowds.

Option 1: Group Tour

The most popular option for visiting the Mud Volcano is joining a group tour that will take care of all logistics for you from beginning to end. There are usually two departure times per day around 7:30AM and 1:00PM.

You can expect the total price for a group tour to be around $60 – $70. Costs for these tours will include transportation, a local guide, and entrance fees. Tipping the locals (massages, photos, cleaning, etc.) will be an extra cost.

The downside of the group tours is that although the departure may be set for 7:30AM / 1:00PM, it can take up to an hour or more picking up other people along the route in Cartagena.

Once you are all set though, you will make the hour ride to the volcano. You will be packed in the volcano with the rest of your tour group and have some time to enjoy the mud before the next group of people can get in.

After getting cleaned up you will then make the hour drive back and drop off others along the way.

So what could take less than 3 hours if you opt for the do it yourself (or private tour) option, will take closer to 5+ hours as part of the tour group .

  • El Totumo Tour + Pink Sea : Check Rates & Availability

Mud Volcano El Totumo Walk

Option 2: Private Tour

Now, for those that want to have that tour experience but without a shared group, you will want to consider a private tour to El Totumo.

Similarly, all logistics will be taken care of for you from beginning to end with a helpful guide by your side. However, instead of having others along with you, it will just be your own personal group.

That means you can better dictate when to depart for the volcano. Private tours like this one are available starting as early as 6:30AM pickup and as late as 3:30PM. By opting for these earlier/later times, you have a better chance of avoiding the crowds and having the mud all to yourself.

Now, these will be more expensive (starting around $95 USD per person), but it can be well worth it to have that more personal experience and not have to waste much time throughout the day.

Check El Totumo Private Tour Rates & Availability

Option 3: Do it Yourself

The third main option to consider is doing the day tour on your own without signing up for a shared or private tour.

You will have the chance to avoid the crowds, the long ride, higher costs, and be on your schedule throughout the day. However, you will be responsible for the logistics and not have a helpful tour guide by your side.

Here is a recap of my day at El Totumo with the do it yourself option:

My friends and I knew we wanted to avoid the tour groups and were aware that most left Cartagena around 8:00AM and 1:00PM. We decided to head out right before 1:00PM after exploring the Old City in the morning and grabbing lunch.

The hard part was flagging down cabs, explaining to them in broken Spanish what we wanted to do and agreeing on a price.

After a few tries we found our guy Luis who agreed to take us there, wait for us, and then take us back into the city for around $70 USD – clearly a better deal than a tour even if you are only two people.

After the hour drive we arrived at El Totumo and due to our timing around 2:00PM there was not one other person there (probably got a bit lucky on this one as people did eventually show up later on).

When we got to the volcano we switched into our bathing suits and made our way up the steps to the top (note there are changing rooms and lockers at the site).

Mud Volcano El Totumo Massages

The locals that work there have this down to a science – one guys takes your shoes and another will grab your phone or camera to take pictures.

Once you are in the volcano you can opt in for a quick massage – in our case, since we were the only ones there, they massaged us for about 10 minutes. If you are there with a large group it might only be a couple of minutes long.

After getting massaged we spent another 15 minutes or so just hanging out floating in the mud . Once our time in the mud was complete, it was time to get washed down.

Awaiting you at the bottom of the volcano will be these nice ladies who will wash you off to the side or in the nearby lake . And these ladies know what they are doing as they scrub you down furiously to get every last piece of mud off your body.

After getting all cleaned up it is time to tip all the people who gave you a hand today – the guy who took your shoes, the guy taking pictures, your masseuse, and the ladies that just cleaned you.

Around 5,000 – 10,000 COP each ($1.50 – $2.50) will do the trick and then you are on your way back to Cartagena with your driver.

Mud Volcano El Totumo Stairs

5) What to Bring

Since this is going to be a more unique (and muddy) experience, you will want to come prepared with the appropriate gear list. Below are some of my recommended items to take along for El Totumo:

Bathing Suit : this should be swimwear that you don’t mind getting dirty. While the mud does come out, it may stain your bathing suit one way or another.

Quick Dry Towel : after getting washed off, a small lightweight towel can help get you dry ( Top Choice: Rainleaf Towel ).

Change of Clothes : bring along a change of clothes for after the experience. It is another 1+ hour drive back to Cartagena, and you won’t want to be in your wet/dirty bathing suit.

Small Change : since there will be several locals helping you out along the way (massages, photos, cleaning, etc.), you will need to tip each one. Bring some small change to make things easier.

Flip Flops : the area all around the volcano can be muddy, so having some easy to clean flip flops would be my recommendation when it comes to footwear.

Water & Snacks : it can get hot in Cartagena! Always be sure to stay hydrated & fueled, so bring along some water/snacks to keep you healthy.

Learn More : Visit El Totumo as part of a longer 10 Day Colombia Itinerary or One Week Colombia Itinerary

6) Where to Stay in Cartagena

Cartagena has several different areas to stay in, however my recommendation would be to stay within the walled city .

The reason for this is that you will be in walking distance to all the great restaurants and nightlife as well as the city itself.

Walking outside your hotel and being in the heart of Cartagena is what it is all about. Here are a few top rated hotel options to choose from when looking into where to stay.

Feel free to check out Booking.com for more options as well.

  • Nacar Hotel Cartagena
  • Hotel Casa Lola
  • Casa India Catalina
  • Casa Canabal Hotel Boutique

Cafe del Mar Cartagena

7) Is the Mud Volcano in Cartagena Worth It?

This answer is really going to depend on your expectations and experience. For me, the Mud Volcano was definitely worth it. I was able to enjoy an extended period of time in the mud without anyone else around besides my group of friends (and the locals who were helping us).

However, if you end up arriving at the volcano with a ton of other people and getting rushed through the mud, the experience will not feel as special.

At the end of the day, there are few other activities that offer what El Totumo does. I love the uniqueness of it and the fact that you can’t really take part of this type of experience in other places.

So, if you are up for a fun filled adventure and want to hop in the mud, then El Totumo is certainly worth the visit.

I hope this article gives you some guidance on what to expect. Whatever you decide though, enjoy your time in Colombia and if you have any questions about the El Totumo experience feel free to comment below!

Just What is the Volcán del Totumo?

The Volcán del Totumo, sometimes referred to as the Volcán de Lodo el Totumo or simply the El Totumo Mud Volcano, is, well, a mud volcano located north of Cartagena.

It rises 15m from the ground (about 50 feet) and has a central crater full of mud.

Honestly, it feels like something that was built but it is supposedly an active mud volcano. Mud volcanos are formed from underground pressures forcing water upwards that then mixes with soil to produce a slurry of mud, according to Wikipedia .

Why Visit the Mud Volcano of Cartagena?

The Volcán de Lodo el Totumo supposedly has medicinal properties , most notably for exfoliation of the skin, according to local legend.

Of the many things to do in Cartagena , it is probably one of the weirdest and most unique experiences (see that link by the way for 75+ more ideas of what to see in Cartagena).

Photo of a guy making a funny face in the mud volcano Cartagena.

I remember going here all the way back in my first year in Cartagena in 2011.

It was…interesting.

Not an experience I’d necessarily want to repeat, but it was definitely something different and a story to tell people about. I wouldn’t consider this an absolute must see in Cartagena, but if it gets your attention, it’s definitely an experience.

If you would like to see it for yourself and see if it does in fact work wonders for your skin, read on to learn all about how to visit the only mud volcano in Colombia and what to expect during a visit to the El Totumo Volcano.

Where is the Mud Volcano in Cartagena, Colombia?

The mud baths of Cartagena at the Volcán de Lodo el Totumo are located about 45 minutes north of Cartagena, near the town of Santa Catalina.

This area lies right by the border of Bolívar and Atlantico provinces and is not far from the Pink Sea of Galerazamba , another unique Cartagena attraction (learn how to visit both the same day below).

The easiest way to visit the Mud Volcano by far is with a Cartagena Mud Volcano tour .

The area is fairly remote and the only way of getting there by public transportation that I know of is either via a mototaxi or combination of bus and mototaxi.

While I’m normally one for doing the cheapest and most adventurous way of visiting somewhere, I don’t think the little bit of money you save is really worth it given the time and remoteness of the destination.

Shared Cartagena Mud Volcano Tours are not very expensive and are easy to book online ahead of time.

For a more intimate experience you could also book a private tour via our partners at BnB Colombia Tours (use the discount code ExploreColombia10 for 10% off). You could also opt to do an all day tour to the Mud Volcano and mangroves of La Boquilla .

Although, if you’re interested in doing private tours, better to fill out this form and let them put together a complete package for you, and you’ll get better prices per tour.

Finally, as I mentioned above you can also combine a tour to the Volcán de Totumo with a visit to the Pink Sea of Galerazamba, although I wouldn’t recommend it during rainy seasons in March-April and October-November as the pink color goes away after it rains. It can be a bit unpredictable, though.

Honestly, my suggestion is if you book a tour that includes both, be prepared for the possibility that the pink sea isn’t pink. If you do do a larger package with BnB Colombia, they include it as a courtesy tour free of charge if you do the mud volcano.

You can also hire a taxi to take you there, wait for you, and bring you back. Expect to pay $150-200,000 pesos for this, which can be cost effective if you are a group and want to go at your own pace. If you’d rather wait and play it by ear, it should also be pretty easy to arrange a Cartagena Mud Volcano tour with most hotels or hostels.

Speaking of hotels and hostels, if you don’t have your accommodations for Cartagena reserved yet, see our lists of the best boutique hotels , best luxury hotels , best beachfront hotels , and best hostels in Cartagena or check out this guide to the best areas to stay .

What to Expect on a Visit to the Cartagena Mud Volcano

Upon arrival, you’ll be ushered up the staircase up the side of the volcano.

Once at the top, get ready to slide in. The natural consistency of the mud keeps you from sinking below about shoulder height so don’t worry about sinking if you can’t swim.

Before sliding in, be sure to hand your phone or camera to one of the guys to snap some photos while you’re enjoying the mud.

Also, it’s probably worth pointing out, the guys will cover your face with mud, put you on your back and sometimes start to massage you, so if you’re not a fan of being touched, it may be best to skip this.

They also pack in about 15-20 people at a time, so be prepared to get a little cozy with the people in your group.

Honestly, I’m not sure how best to describe this experience, other than well interesting and frankly a bit odd.

The mud is a pleasant enough temperature and doesn’t feel dirty or anything, it’s just an odd, squishy consistency .

After a bit of time in the mud, it’s time to get out and let some other people enjoy it.

After heading down the stairs, you can wash off in the nearby lagoon. There you’ll find women who will wash you and also often give you a bit of a massage (again if you don’t like being touched, this is probably not the best activity for you).

And, well, that’s it, you can now tell everyone you’ve swam in a volcano.

Some Practical Tips

  • It’s a good idea to use a bathing suit you don’t mind getting a little stained as the mud can be tough to get all the way out.
  • Taking a change of clothes is also not the worse idea, although it isn’t entirely necessary.
  • Take along some small bills to tip the camera men and the ladies who wash you off (about $5,000-$20,000 pesos each is a good amount).
  • While you won’t need it in the mud volcano itself, some sunscreen isn’t a bad idea.

Is it still open for tours now? Or closed due to covid?

Hi Hayley, it should be open. You may need to show proof of vaccination but to my knowledge it has not reclosed since reopening last year.

Totumo Mud Volcano

Please select a from and to date.

On this ecotour you will have the opportunity to visit and plunge into the Totumo mud volcano, a place of interest in Cartagena for its natural mud formation that gives you the added benefit of improving and restoring your skin while you relax in this natural Spa. The volcano is 20 meters high and more than 2,000 meters deep, but because of the mud’s density and its components it is impossible to sink.

Once you are in the volcano, the most difficult thing will be to choose what position you want to be in, since by inertia your body tends to float face up. Acclimating to being in the warm and dense mud is both an extremely fun experience and a strange feeling at the same time.

Don’t forget to rub the mud all over your body and face, and massage it into your skin a circular movement to improve the effectiveness. When you take the mud off you will feel that your skin is noticeably softer and smoother, and after floating for so many minutes, you will be in a state of extreme relaxation.
