Frequently asked questions.

  • What is the best way to see most of the Gold Coast? Seeing most of the Gold Coast is dependent upon how much time you have and what transport you have arranged. One of the easier and most flexible ways to explore the Gold Coast is to hire a car and set up the satellite navigation system to guide you to some of our most notable attractions. We recommend you call into a Visitor Information Centre for suggestions and directions before you depart, which will ensure you maximise the time you have to explore. But if you are considering joining a tour, consider focusing on a certain area of the Gold Coast - such as the Gold Coast Hinterland, and by exploring beside a local, you’re likely to learn so much more than if you head out on your own.
  • How do I get to the Great Barrier Reef from the Gold Coast? One of the Gold Coast’s best-kept secrets is that a one-of-a-kind day tour departs from the Gold Coast Airport to reach the southernmost tip of the Great Barrier Reef at Lady Elliot Island. It’s an early start, but you may see first light illuminate the Surfers Paradise skyline before marvelling at spectacular views of Moreton and Fraser Islands as you track towards Lady Elliot Island. This tiny coral cay is on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, and with a day to explore, join a guided snorkel safari in clear waters to hover over vibrant corals and meet some of the curious creatures that call the Great Barrier Reef home. You’ll likely see sea turtles, myriad fish and perhaps even some majestic manta rays. A sumptuous buffet lunch is included also, and time to join a fish feeding tour and admire nesting sea birds (in season). Enjoy an equally scenic flight home and land on the Gold Coast in time for dinner.
  • How do I arrange to go on a whale-watching tour? There are several Gold Coast operators providing whale watching tours, which run seasonally (late May to October) departing from many locations including Surfers Paradise, Main Beach and Runaway Bay. Some consider the best time for whale watching to be August, which is the peak time for whale migration and when mating season is in full swing. All whale watching cruises follow the same route, and tours work with each other to advise when a whale is spotted so everyone has the best chance of seeing these magnificent creatures. Whales can also easily be spotted from the shore at some of the Gold Coast’s headlands including Burleigh, Currumbin and Point Danger and during whale season, if you are underwater, you may also hear them singing.
  • What are the best Indigenous experiences on the Gold Coast? Connect deeply to the Gold Coast’s ancient Indigenous culture on a walking tour guided by traditional custodians of the Yugambeh language group at Dreaming Mountain (Jellurgal), located at the base of Burleigh Headland. Be welcomed onto country by traditional owners and listen to dreaming stories that share the creation of Jellurgal, while following a rainforest fringed walkway learning about traditional life, spotting bush tucker and native Australian animals and discovering the deep spiritual connection Yugambeh peoples have with country. Visit the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre’s Art Gallery to admire stunning Indigenous art and artefacts including boomerangs, null nullas and dilly bags and visit the gift shop after to take home a unique souvenir. Kids-specific Walkabout Tours are available on school holidays.
  • What are the most unique tours you can do on the Gold Coast? You’ll find some of our more unique tours located in the Gold Coast Hinterland, which is easily accessed on a day trip from the Gold Coast. From visiting caves filled with glowworms, having a picnic date with an alpaca and sampling liquors from the oldest craft Distillery in Queensland that holds the enviable record of the most awards achieved in Australia this century! If staying closer to the coast is your preference, there’s plenty to do. Hop aboard a scenic city tour that turns into an immersive aqua adventure on a purpose-built amphibious tour bus. Join a whale watching tour to see the Humpback Highway at close range or join a jet-ski tour to explore our beautiful waterways.
  • Are there any tours that offer accessible options? Accessibility is an integral part of the Gold Coast visitor experience and there's a wide range of tours that cater for all abilities. From whale watching, jet boating, theme park visits, wildlife encounters, cruises and skydiving - to name just a few. Planning is key, and online information is readily available on most tour operator websites, however, we would also suggest calling ahead to speak to the tour organiser to discuss the assistance you may need and ensure the tour you are interested in is suitable for you. You can find more information in the official  Queensland Government Accessibility Guide to the Gold Coast  to help with planning the perfect holiday to the Gold Coast.
  • What are the best tours to do with families on the Gold Coast? Families are well catered for on the Gold Coast, with several exciting tours on offer that will thrill kids and adults alike. From unique animal encounters and behind-the-scenes tours to the chance to become a ranger for a day at our animal sanctuaries to hosting an alpaca picnic. Complete thrilling tree top challenges, take a river cruise and whale watch or see glow worms light up a cave at night. There are also family surf lessons to try, escape rooms to conquer and private tours that can build your family the perfect itinerary with the time you have available to explore, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy quality time together.
  • What’s the best way to see the Gold Coast Hinterland? A number of tours depart from the Gold Coast and take the scenic hour-long drive to the Gold Coast Hinterland which offers a completely different experience to the coast. Depending on your tour preferences, you can arrange a visit to the ancient Gondwana rainforest, watch waterfalls tumble, embark on a bush walk, step into caves illuminated by glowworms and feast on fabulous fresh local fare. The Gold Coast Hinterland is where most of our vineyards live, so a winery tour will take you on a pleasant day of cellar door tastings and gorging on gourmet goodies for lunch, or perhaps you’d like to take a hot air balloon flight that concludes with a champagne breakfast? All is possible on the GC.
  • Is there a central place I can go to book my tours? Yes, you’ll find two Visitor Information Centres located on the Gold Coast. One at the Gold Coast Airport and another on Cavill Ave in Surfers Paradise. Friendly assistants can help you find the perfect tours that will suit the length of time you are staying and also, suggest activities you might like to try. Bookings for tours can also be made at these Visitor Information Centres and a range of brochures, itineraries and options are available for you to peruse and take with you if you are not ready to decide.
  • Can I book a tour that has guides that speak my language? Yes, JPT Tours provides tours to all the most popular Gold Coast attractions with English, Japanese, and Chinese-speaking guides, plus other languages on request. From arranging your airport transfers to your hotel, tours on the ground while you are visiting and helping you to make the most of your stay, the friendly team at JPT will be happy to assist you.

Gold Coast’s epic ‘James Bond’ house going to auction

A Gold Coast property named Skyfall is set to go to auction on June 1.

A Gold Coast trophy house named Skyfall in a nod to the James Bond series has hit the market and it’s got all the extras a secret agent could want.

Skyfall is nestled in the hillside of Tallai on one of the Hinterland’s most popular streets.

The five-bedroom residence has something for the whole family with a jaw-dropping vista, suspended bridge, infinity-edged pool and basketball court.

Day or night — the view impresses.

The 16m lap pool.

The firepit with the suspended bridge in the background.

The property, only completed last month, is set to go to auction on June 1.

Owner Simon Newitt, the managing director of Steel Construct Australia, joined forces with building designer Zauss House and construction company TLF Developments, to bring his vision to life.

453 The Panorama, Tallai is going to auction on June 1.

What a view!

Suburb record: Gold Coast home sells for $4.6m

Top marks: The most affordable property markets near high-performing schools

He bought the block, at 453 The Panorama , in 2018 and spent almost four years, on and off, working on the design and construction.

“I had a dream about 20 years ago when I sat up here when it was just a lookout and wanted to buy a parcel of land but I could never afford to do so,” the father-of-three said.

“I’m from country Tasmania and love my space and I love my country rural feel.

“I still like to be engaged to the Coast and have it all available but like to get back to privacy.”

The kitchen and dining area spills out to the pool.

The living area.

Following three successful builds in Burleigh and Tallai, Mr Newitt embarked on his dream house, an 88m single-level residence blending steel and concrete with brass and stone finishes.

“My business fabricates structural steel and rigs it,” he said.

“The whole skeleton, sub floor and framing was all done by my company.

“It’s solid as a rock, it’s like a bunker.”

Illuminated concrete steps lead to the front door.

From the street, the house is set down and hidden, although the pristine landscaping and front gates give you a glimpse of what’s to come.

Inside and the view — from South Stradbroke Island in the north, down to NSW’s Fingal Head in the south — takes your breath away.

453 The Panorama, Tallai.

Looking down the hill and it feels like you’re floating on top of the city.

“It really is such an incredible view,” he said.

“I wanted every room to have the view and because it was such a wide site, we could accommodate it.

Mr Newitt said he didn’t want a boring build and Skyfall is anything but conventional.

One of the bedrooms.

The residence includes high ceilings as well as custom lighting that illuminates the concrete walls.

The kitchen has a curved island bench, electric touch cupboards, Vintec wine fridge, Ilve induction cooktop and oven, as well as a butler’s pantry.

It joins the dining, and lounge area with opens via bifolds to the heated 16m infinity-edge lap pool, spa and eco deck with outdoor kitchen and fireplace.

The north part of the house has four ensuited bedrooms, as well as a media room and study.

“With steel I can float benches and cantilever steel and then we softened up the house with the brass finishes,” he said.

A bridge connects the main residence to the guesthouse.

The guesthouse.

A 20m suspended bridge to the south of the main residence accesses the luxury guesthouse, which also has its own plunge pool.

The house is fully automated with security cameras and keyless entry.

Other features include a basketball court, firepit and triple garage with air-base hangar-style doors.

Mr Newitt said Skyfall was only recently finished and while it would be bittersweet to sell, new development opportunities had come up.

Amir Mian of Amir Prestige Group is marketing the property.

Families in insurance limbo as Queensland grapples with a $2.2b rebuild from summer storm disaster

Four months have passed since a freak storm on Christmas Day flattened Tammie Fogarty's Gold Coast hinterland home and turned her life upside down.

She is still picking up the pieces.

Her insurance company is covering temporary accommodation while engineers assess whether her house can be salvaged or will have to be rebuilt.

They had hoped her hardwood floors could be saved but after months of exposure to the weather her kitchen is now covered in mould and weeds are sprouting from the stairs in the living room.

In the days and weeks after the disaster, Ms Fogarty said the support from the community was overwhelming.

But as weeks turned to months and that sympathy dried up, she said she had been left to fend for herself.

"As time goes on people forget," Ms Fogarty said.

"They just get on with their lives while we are still dealing with the aftermath and it's going to be a long time before we are back to normal again."

Ms Fogarty was eligible for three government disaster grants totalling $1,600 and was insured.

Learning to navigate the claims process has been a slow and painful exercise.

To make matters worse, she has not been able to return to work as a nurse because her dad now requires around-the-clock care.

"It's hard being displaced, particularly with my father who has Alzheimer's," she said.

"I can't go back to work because he's not safe to leave on his own. He has no idea where he is or what is going on."

Counting the cost

The Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) is still assessing the damage and counting the cost.

The latest estimates from Treasury put the cost to the Queensland economy of last summer's natural disasters at $2.2 billion.

Across the state's south-east, more than 1,000 homes were damaged — 150 were rendered uninhabitable and 14 were destroyed.

Over the past two weeks a team of 12 QRA officers visited all of them as part of their three-monthly damage assessment and reconstruction monitoring operation.

Deputy state recovery coordinator Michael Wassing was on the road inspecting the damage in some of the Gold Coast's worst-hit suburbs.

He said repairs had started on about half of the homes he visited.

"We are always conscious of anyone who slips through the cracks," Mr Wassing said.

"Ultimately, people are at the core of it and we want people to be supported through this long-term recovery."

At George Elliott's place in Upper Coomera, work is about to begin.

His family has lived there for 23 years and he said he had never experienced anything like the storm that caused $100,000 worth of damage to his property.

"A lot of internal damage from water leaks and stuff like that," Mr Elliott said.

"We might be out of our home for six or eight weeks, who knows. The neighbours here are out of their home full stop."

Road to recovery

Parts of the Gold Coast hinterland and Scenic Rim are still a mess.

In some streets, tarps cover the roof of every house.

Many families have found they did not have adequate contents insurance to cover furniture and belongings.

Len La Tours sheltered next to a chest of drawers when the storm ripped his house apart.

The 74-year-old's Wongawallan home was damaged beyond repair and had to be demolished.

Richard Mailley's property at Tamborine Mountain was also razed. A for-sale sign now sits outside the empty block.

Down the winding range, Thomas McCrossin owns an acreage property in Upper Coomera.

His home on Kriedeman Road has been gutted and is now an empty shell.

It's still uninhabitable.

Insurance will cover the cost of the rebuild, but work hasn't started, and he was told it would take nine months.

His family is living in a nearby investment property.

Accounting for the damage and loss of rental income, he said fixing his home and replacing furniture and appliances could cost six figures.

"It's very, very financially stressful," Mr McCrossin said.

Man stood in front of ravaged home.

"It has been frustrating the hell out of me but when I look and compare it to what other people are going through, I actually think we are pretty fortunate.

"My next-door neighbour is still living in his house and his roof got smashed by a tree — there is a little tarp on there and it leaks every time it rains.

"People like that who are still living in those conditions while they deal with insurance, I see that as worse."

Before: A tree split this Tamborine Mountain property in two. . . After: Repairs are underway but the owner's insurance won't cover the entire rebuild. . .

Insurance backlog

Thousands of Queensland families are in limbo waiting for insurers to sift through the mountain of claims.

According to the Insurance Council of Australia, more than 60,000 claims totalling $750 million were lodged following the Christmas and New Year's Day storms.

About 60 per cent of the claims are still being processed.

For those waiting, it's a long, slow process.

If and when claims are approved, many homeowners face an uphill battle to get their property repaired because tradespeople are in such high demand.

three builders at a house construction site

"I'm not blaming anyone because we just physically do not have the people to do it," Mr McCrossin said.

For her own mental health Ms Foggarty is taking it one day at a time.

"This has been our home for 30 years and not being here is the hardest thing of all to deal with," she said.

"It would be too depressing to look more than a couple of days in the future.

"I can't look too far ahead at the moment because it's just so overwhelming."
