It might be hard to envision given the temperatures outside right now, but the 14th annual Tour of America’s Dairyland bicycle racing series will roll into Milwaukee in June.

Organizers announced the 2023 race lineup earlier this month. Two city of Milwaukee races are included: Bay View on Thursday, June 22 and Downer Avenue on Saturday, June 24. West Allis, Shorewood and Wauwatosa also are hosting races.

Bicyclists compete in timed races, completing lap after lap on city streets. An announcer keeps the crowd informed on what’s happening, with pace cars and video display boards also tracking the action. Professional racers peak at speeds of approximately 35 miles per hour on flat courses, with a number of the courses offering challenging hills. Action picks up not just at the end of the race for the overall winner, but also for single-lap sprints (primes) with cash or gear prizes.

All of the races are free to attend, with larger crowds forming later in the day for the professional races.

One race isn’t on the list: Brady Street . The series looped around the Lower East Side neighborhood last year for the first time, but it isn’t listed this year and its Thursday placement is now filled by the Bay View race. The race locations are sponsored by local host groups or businesses.

The Tour of America's Dairyland bike racing series is back this summer with several Milwaukee area stops

tour of america's dairyland 2023 schedule

Good news for fans of bicycles, racing, summer and Wisconsin.

The Tour of America's Dairyland — the nation's largest multiday road bike racing series — is returning to Milwaukee area streets June 16-27.

The 2020 tour was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The tour will look a bit different this year, partly because of coronavirus safety precautions and partly because of the absence of a few popular stops.

But Bill Koch, executive director for Tour of America's Dairyland, is "ecstatic" that the race is back. He said the number of racers in the event this year should exceed the number of racers in 2019.

In past races, nearly 150,000 participants and spectators took part.

"I think, like many sporting events, like any type of event, the people that participate in them are so anxious to get back to some type of competition and participation, and bike racing is really in the same boat," Koch said.

The event this year will feature two Wauwatosa stops, two Milwaukee Mile Speedway stops at Wisconsin State Fair Park and stops in Grafton and Shorewood. The race will also be in Janesville and Manitowoc for two days each.

"Tour of America's Dairyland has put Wisconsin on the map around the globe," Koch said. "It's a really proud moment for all of us to celebrate."

The Milwaukee stops, which were originally planned for Brady Street and Downer Avenue, will not be included this year. Koch said they weren't able to finalize approvals in time with the business improvement districts of those two areas, mainly because of COVID-19 related safety concerns.

Koch said those stops will be back in 2022.

"If it wasn't for Janesville, Manitowoc and even Wauwatosa saying we can host you for two days, TOAD wouldn't be happening this year," Koch said.

It's the first time the race will be in Wauwatosa's Village area. The Village will have live music for the event, as well as food and beverage vendors and a makers market.

Michelle Haider, director of the Wauwatosa Village Business Improvement District, said they'll do their best to keep participants and onlookers safe with plenty of hand sanitizer stations and spread out restrooms. In addition, organizers will ask people to walk the same direction on the north side or south side of the street.

Haider said the Village area is blessed with a lot of nearby public and park space, which will be used to help keep people safely distanced.

The other Wauwatosa stop will be in the Washington Highlands neighborhood.

Koch said they'll encourage spectators to keep their distance and to spread out. There also won't be as many tents and vendors on site this year.

The tour already has a risk mitigation officer and will have safety personnel on site to provide safety checks.

Koch also said they plan to implement a new online awards system and will allow people to register only online — two measures to eliminate people waiting in line.

"The list is already quite extensive on mitigation activities and efforts that we’ll have to do to make sure we can make things as safe as possible," Koch said in a past interview.

Koch encouraged onlookers to check the local event Facebook pages before they head out to the races, to make sure they know the rules and guidelines.

The schedule

Wednesday, June 16: Milwaukee Mile (juniors only)

Thursday, June 17: Janesville

Friday, June 18: Janesville
