These Giant Aldabra Tortoises is one of the famous tourist attractions found in Prison island Zanzibar. They can be roughly 122 cm length and with an average weight of 250 kg (550 pounds).

They’re known to be one among the longest-lived animals in the world; at Prison island, the oldest tortoise is estimated to be 196 years old.

These tortoises were originally brought from Seychelles islands during the 18th Century, and they were as a gift, at that time they were 4 tortoises, but now the number has been compounded.

A former prison,, giant tortoises,, and snorkeling.

This island is named after the prison that was built in 1893. The prison was originally intended to house violent prisoners from the mainland and people sick with yellow fever. However, the prison is now owned by a hotel. In addition to the prison, the island is also home to a tortoise sanctuary.

The sanctuary contains a large colony of giant tortoises that were imported from Seychelles in the late 19th century. During your visit to the sanctuary, you will learn about efforts to protect the tortoises. These creatures have an average weight of 200 kg and many of them are over 150 years old.

You’ll have the opportunity to touch them and take photos. Moreover, the island is home to a stunning colony of peacocks. For the remainder of the trip, you can choose to either snorkel around the coral that fringes Prison Island and enjoy the marine life or simply relax under the warm sun until we return to Stone Town.

After breakfast, we drive to Zanzibar Stone Town to catch our boat to Prison Island for this half-day tour. The island lies just off the Old Stone Town, it is also a home to giant land tortoises  that were imported from Seychelles in the late 19th century and are now under strict conservation. Now it is more commonly known as the home of Zanzibar’s  Giant Aldabran Tortoise  colony, some of which are over a hundred years old. Once on the island, you have the opportunity to feed and pet the tortoises; if you have time, you may also like to take a stroll through the forested interior where you will see a wide variety of birds, colorful peacocks.

The Island was once used by an Arab slave trader to contain the more troublesome slaves he had brought from the African mainland to prevent their escape before shipping them to the Arabian Purchasers or auctioning them in the Zanzibarian slave trade market.

In 1893, Lloyd Mathews built the prison. The prison’s idea was to send violent criminals from the Tanganyika (Now  Tanzania together with Zanzibar) mainland to Prison Island. The Prison Island ended up being used as a quarantine center, instead of a prison, for yellow fever epidemics that once raged through the region. Prison Island remained in the ownership of the government which converted the newer quarantine buildings into a guest house.

The island offers a stunning view of Stone Town, especially during the night; and has a lovely white sandy beach for sunbathing and swimming in the crystal waters will make you feel amazing and relaxed. The beautiful coral reefs surrounding the island are ideal for snorkeling and provide a great opportunity to see underwater marine life and coral reefs. It is by no means the most extensive or varied snorkeling spot off the coast of Zanzibar but being so close to Stone Town and so easily accessible makes it ideal for those who want to see ‘under the sea’ a little while they are on a city break.

The island’s restaurant, Matthews, is good and well-renowned. This is especially so considering the restaurant’s charming atmosphere and good sea view.

It is a relaxing excursion that takes half-day on the beautiful island of Zanzibar Town. The use of the island has changed over time. Although it was initially built as a prison it was never put into that function. Later it was used as a quarantine of slaves for the whole of East Africa. The remnants of the building are still visible. The island offers a stunning view of the Town, especially during the night; there is several stunning minor sandy beach where swimming in the crystal waters is marvellous. The coral reefs surrounding the island provide an opportunity for snorkelling. This is also a home of the giant tortoise, which is now under strict conservation. Prison Island

The day starts by visiting the historic Prison Island. We’ll hop on board and set sail for about 20 minutes until we reach Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island, as it was once used as a prison for slaves and a quarantine centre for people with yellow fever.

Nakupenda beach

After the prison visit we shall take sail to the sandbank of Pange. There you will spend the best part of the day soaking in the sun or taking a cool plunge in the turquoise waters that surround you. You can simply relax or take a swim and snorkel. The under- water world is truly amazing. The tropical fish that swim amongst the beautiful, live coral reef around the sandbank is a marvelous sight. After you have worked up an appetite, you will sit down and relax while enjoying chilled drinks and can take part in preparation of your lunch seafood BBQ.

An interesting fact about the Aldabra Giant tortoise is that they can live for more than 200 years. The Oldest one at Prison Island is 197 years old. They are one of the world’s longest-living animals.

Prison Ruins: This is a building that was erected in 1983 to host the Central Prison of Zanzibar. The Jail construction Started in 1893, In the same year, They had been a Cholera Epidemic in Egypt, and shortly afterward Bubonic Plague in Bombay. Since Zanzibar was the Main East African Port, Authorities decided That the Prison and other Erected Buildings were to keep in readiness as a Quarantine Station to proper control measures for vessels and their passengers to avoid the risk of an Epidemic in the Zanzibar Archipelago.

Nakupenda beach (Sandbank)

Nakupenda is a name given to a Sand Bank that is located nearby Stone Town, after the Prison Island trip we will go to Nakupenda Sand Bank where you will relax, swim and do Snorkeling. It is one of the best beaches in Zanzibar.

We were lucky enough to meet them both and they go above and beyond to make your stay better with providing all sort of different tours, trips and experiences. We were snorkling at Mnemba, on Safari Blue and outside the hotel in Pongwe with a local fisherman. We were also on trips to Maalum Cave, Stone Town, Spice Farm, Jozani forrest and a local cave in Kiwengwa. Last but not least we were on a 3 day trip to Mikumi National Park, all taken care of by the two guides mentioned earlier. We often had special requests, and these were listened to and often better suggestions were proposed. We were always taken care of and felt serviced by Mr. President and Mr. Zanzibar. Only saw a few monkeys, most of which where high on the trees. The worst thing is that our guide seemed to be aware that there's not much to see and would go and give us useless information about voodoo people that turn into donkeys and this kind of bs on order to make the tour last a little longer. Ali, who organised the tour was very good, we received lots of information about the caves, various cave wildlife and geological formations were indicated to us. Note, that part of the caves are physically very demanding, yhey need crawling under low (1 meterhigh) ceiling, we did not take it. But all we saw were very worth it. Though the tour is not accessible, the crew assisted me at great length, so we could bring her along. The snorkeling was beautiful, and the seafood lunch was one of the best we ever had.
