Port of Estepona (Malaga, Andalusia)

Estepona, on the world-famous Costa del Sol, conserves all the charms of a typical Andalusian town, with its peaceful squares bedecked with colourful flowerpots and little white houses. It is also a holiday resort offering all the latest modern amenities, golf clubs and sporting and recreational areas.

Its 21 kilometres of coastline are home to a number of beaches that have been awarded the European Blue Flag. Highlights include the areas along the seafront promenade and the marina (which every Sunday is the site of a street market offering traditional products and arts and crafts). Right in the centre is the beach of La Rada, the perfect place for a dip.

The lovely old town centre fits the classic image of Andalusia, with restored streets of whitewashed houses, crowded with pots of bright flowers. There are several art routes around the town, such as the Murals Route, with over 40 works of art, the Sculpture Route, with over 30 pieces by different artists, and the Poetry Route, with works in several languages. Notable buildings include the Clock Tower, the 18th century church of Los Remedios, and the former San Luis Castle. Also worth a visit are the megalithic necropolis of Corominas, the original bullring, the Plaza de las Flores, Casa del Aljibe (home of the Archaeological Museum), and the Botanical Gardens and orchid house.

Estepona’s numerous restaurants run the gamut from traditional Mediterranean dishes to innovative, international cuisine. We recommend the salt-baked fish, 'fritura malagueña' (mixed fried fish platter) and char-grilled sardines.

Nature, sport, and countryside

Nature lovers will enjoy a side trip to the S ierra Bermeja natural park , where they can climb the Pico de los Reales (1,449 metres) for views over the western Costa del Sol, the Rock of Gibraltar, and the north coast of Africa. Estepona is also home to several golf courses, the Costa del Sol School of Equestrian Art, and the Selwo Aventura leisure park, where over 2,000 animals live side by side in semi-freedom. Another worthwhile excursion just a few kilometres away is to Manilva, which has seven kilometres of beaches along its coastline. Nearby is the historic-artistic site of Casares, presided by the church of La Encarnación and the Torre de la Sal tower. Continuing on along the coast you'll come to Marbella, one of the most important holiday resorts on the Costa del Sol, and Fuengirola, a town boasting a profound Andalusian heritage with magnificent beaches.

Estepona is a seaside resort city of 67,000 people (2018) on the Costa del Sol in Spain . Remnants from prehistory have been excavated in Estepona. The Romans, Phoenicians and Moors left their mark on the city.

Understand [ edit ]

Estepona lies on the Mediterranean Sea with the Sierra Bermeja mountains over 1000 m high in the background. The beaches are 21 km long.

Estepona is one of the few coastal towns that has succeeded in maintaining its pueblo charm and character, despite the onslaught of tourism. Notwithstanding, all the tourist facilities are here, including hotels, restaurants, leisure and cultural activities, and shops.

The flip side is that the numerous street cafes and tapas bars still serve traditional Spanish delicacies and the steep, cobbled, narrow streets seem more suited to horses than cars. You'll also find unusual shops and bodegas in Estepona, where you'd least expect them, all very inviting, very friendly - and very cheap!

In addition to the old town of Estepona, a lot of urbanizations for vacationers were built in the fifteen years before the real estate bubble burst. Between the old town and the city limits of Marbella, the “New Golden Mile” was created along the Mediterranean Sea in competition with the “Golden Mile” of Marbella. The New Golden Mile includes the districts of Rio Padron, Villacana, Cancelada, El Saladillo, Benamara, Isdabe-Atalaya, El Paraiso. West of the old town towards Algeciras, the districts of Bahia Azul, Valle Romano and Buenas Noches emerged. Overall, the city now offers space for more than 100,000 residents.

This clock tower is the only surviving part of the former Los Remedios church, originally built in 1473 and destroyed by the 1755 earthquake.

A neo-classic dome was added to the clock tower in the 18th century and now looks over the Plaza del Reloj , which is one of those idyllic little places you stumble upon on a leisurely evening walk.

Estepona, located just over an hour from my hometown, Malaga, is one of my favourite coastal towns.

You can do anything from strolling the most beautiful old town in the province of Malaga and admiring the unique street art and statues to soaking up the sun at the beach and doing water sports like paddle surfing and kayaking.

If you’re ready to discover the beauty of Estepona, I’ve compiled a list of the best things to do in Estepona, including local tips on where to eat and sleep, when to visit Estepona and much more, so you can enjoy a fantastic day trip or stay.

Best Things to Do in Estepona, Spain

1. wander the picturesque estepona old town.

a pretty street of estepona old town

Casco histórico de Estepona is considered the best old town in Costa del Sol . You can spend hours wandering around and taking photos of the many picturesque streets, each one decorated with pots of different colours and bright flowers.

There are two ways you can explore it. The first one is by following your intuition and getting lost in the many streets. The second is by scanning the QR code to get the old town map in the tourism office and following their recommended route to see all the pretty streets.

I really enjoy looking for beautiful streets on my own as I find it more exciting, but if you don’t have much time, you might want to consider taking the route, so you can ensure you see them all.

Some of the prettiest streets in Estepona Old Town are:

  • Calle San Antonio
  • Calle Concepción
  • Calle Sirena
  • Pasaje Maruja Mallo

2. Check out Ruinas del Castillo de San Luis

castle ruins in the historic centre of estepona, spain

The remains of the Castle of San Luis confirm the Medieval past of Estepona. The castle dates back to the 16th century, and its aim was to defend and protect the residents of the town, who built houses around the castle and kept it almost hidden for years.

The castle was destroyed by French troops in 1810, so nowadays, you can only see the remains of the tower and a wall. However, I’m always amazed by finding historical spots like this one that tell a story about the previous generations.

3. Immerse yourself in nature in El Orquidario de Estepona

El Orquidario de Estepona is one of the best things to see in Estepona.

Estepona Orchid House makes you feel like you’re in the jungle. It’s home to a great variety of plants and trees from around the world, including Southeast Asia and America.

The bird chirping and the waterfall sounds are very peaceful and relaxing. Wander around this botanic garden, take photos and learn about the different plants and orchids, as there are about 1300 orchid species.

Entry to the Orchid House is 3 euros per adult and 1 euro per child.

4. Spot street art around Estepona

street art in Estepona, Spain

If you love street art, you’ll be surprised by all the incredible pieces of art you can find across the city. In fact, there is even an art route to see them all.

There are 60 incredible paintings for you to discover, and although some of them are close to each other, it can be difficult to see them all if you’re spending only a few hours in Estepona.

The most impressive, at least to me, is called “Día de Pesca” by José Fernández Ríos. It consists of a fisherman catching what looks like a sardine or anchovy. This painting is divided into three different buildings and six facades.

Another two art walls you shouldn’t miss are Regando el Jardín (Watering the Garden) and La Última Cena (The Last Dinner).

5. Have a coffee in Plaza Doctor Arce

a beautiful square in Estepona, Spain

This beautiful small square is an excellent place to enjoy a coffee or meal on an outdoor terrace. There is a fountain with a statue in the middle which is surrounded by a few coffee shops and restaurants.

MaduBar is one of the best places to eat in this area. It offers traditional and Mediterranean dishes while providing a cosy and beautiful atmosphere. Some of its popular lunch dishes include Gambas al Pil Pil and Kofta Kebab.

However, if you want breakfast and lunch, they also have great choices, including vegetarian dishes.

If you’re looking for cheap eats, La Italiana has breakfast dishes as well as a good selection of ice cream and cakes. I actually had a ham sandwich and orange juice in there, and they were good.

6. Take a photo of the picturesque Plaza de las Flores

plaza de las flores, Estepona, Spain

Plaza de las Flores (Flower Square) is one of the liveliest squares in the old town of Estepona. As its name suggests, the square is surrounded by beautiful red, pink and white flowers and trees, including orange trees that leave a good aroma, and it has a marbled fountain in the middle.

This is a popular spot to enjoy a meal as restaurants and cafes set up tables around the square.

7. Admire art at Casa de las Tejerinas

Casa de las tejerinas in Estepona, Spain

Situated in Plaza de las Flores de Estepona, inside the tourism office, you can find Casa de las Tejerinas, a lovely building used for cultural purposes.

It has a beautiful patio and a second floor with stained glass, and a couple of rooms where paintings and pictures from local artists are often displayed. I didn’t know you could find artwork in this building!

Entry to Casa de las Tejerinas is free.

8. Do the sculpture route

one of the statues of the scultpure route in Estepona, Spain

Another popular route to take in Estepona is the sculpture route, which consists of 32 statues commemorating important people and events in Estepona and Spain. All these statues are spread across the town – from the historic centre to its surroundings.

With over 30 sculptures, you might not be able to see them all in a day, so if you want to see the most accessible ones in the centre, don’t miss the following ones:

  • Padre Manuel . Located next to Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Church.
  • Monumento a la Peseta . Located on the beach promenade, close to the tourism office.
  • Mujer Pensativa . Located on Plaza Ortiz.
  • Milagros . Located on Plaza Blas Infante.

9. Do the poetry route

a poem in the historic centre of Estepona, Spain

If you love poetry, add this route to your Estepona itinerary. During this walking route, you can find 40 poems by important Spanish writers, such as Antonio Machado and Juan Ramón Jiménez, and international writers like William Shakespeare.

Many of these poems are engraved on tiles in the historic centre, but there are a few spread across other parts of Estepona.

10. Go inside Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios

Nuestra Señora de los Remedios church in Estepona, Spain

Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is a Catholic church located in San Francisco Square. It’s the most important and beautiful church in Estepona, which many locals frequent every Sunday.

Its white and gold coloured facade and tower are impressive, but its interior is too. Inside the church, you can see numerous religious statues of Jesus and Mary, among others. During the months of December and the beginning of January, the church sets up a lovely nativity scene.

Next to the church, you’ll find the statue of Padre Manuel, who used to be a very important priest in Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Church.

If you happen to be in Estepona on the 15th of August, you can see a religious procession which goes through the old town of Estepona.

11. Admire Casa Siglo XVIII

casa del siglo XVIII in Estepona, Spain

Casa Siglo XVIII is a hidden gem in the historic centre of Estepona. This building, located on Mondéjar Street, was an important building in the past, and what makes it unique is the paintings surrounding the frame of the door to access the balcony.

This valuable painting was restored in 2019 and consists of two columns on the two sides of the door and other decorative elements.

Look up because it’s very easy to miss this spot; I found myself checking Google Maps a couple of times.

12. Find Torre del Reloj

torre del reloj, estepona, spain

Situated in Plaza del Reloj, you’ll find this beautiful beige and pink sand colour tower which belonged to Iglesia de Los Remedios, a former church built in the 16th century.

This square, named after the tower, is where celebrations and concerts occur. Otherwise, it’s a very tranquil place.

You can celebrate the New Year in this square if you’re around Estepona during the festive season.

13. Go for a walk on the beach promenade

beach promenade in Estepona, Spain

One of the best things to do in Estepona on a sunny day is to walk on its beach promenade. The wide path, scenic sea views and sculptures make it a fantastic walk.

You can stop by restaurants or chiringuitos (beach bars) along the promenade to sip a cocktail or have delicious fresh fish.

It’s a meeting point for tourists and locals, especially on a sunny day in winter. When I visited Estepona recently, I saw there was a giant chessboard with pieces to play with. It was nice to see families and friends playing a chess game.

14. Soak up the sun at Playa de la Rada

La Rada beach in Estepona, Spain.

Estepona enjoys an average of 320 days of sun, warm summers and mild winters, which makes it a perfect place to visit any time of the year.

Going to La Rada Beach isn’t only a summer activity, and it isn’t a surprise to see many tourists sunbathing with temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius (68°F) in the winter months.

This 2-kilometre sandy beach in Estepona is the most visited by locals and tourists due to its central location.

It’s perfect for everyone as it’s accessible, the water is calm, and it has good facilities like public toilets and showers, and it’s surrounded by many beach restaurants where you can enjoy traditional fish dishes like espeto de sardinas (sardine skewers).

Another reason I love this beach is its views; you can see the Strait of Gibraltar on clear days.

15. Do water sports

Whether you love kayaking or want to hire a pedal boat, you can find plenty of water activities to do in Estepona.

El Saladillo Beach, one of the longest beaches in Estepona, is the best beach to practice any aquatic sports. There are companies that offer paddle surfing, wakeboarding and kayaking.

Scuba diving is another option, and a few schools teach you how to scuba dive and provide you with certification.

16. Go to Puerto Deportivo de Estepona

A 25-minute walk from the historic centre, you’ll find Estepona Marina. It’s a lovely spot to leisurely walk on a sunny day or stop by one of the cafes to have a drink and a quick bite.

Here you can also see Estepona Lighthouse, called Faro de Punta Doncella in Spanish, and go on a catamaran cruise.

Actually, Estepona is a popular spot for dolphin watching, so if it’s an activity that has been on your list for a while, check out this dolphin tour .

17. Taste the local fish and seafood

traditional fish in Malaga

If you’re looking for a good restaurant to try the local fish and seafood, go to Restaurante La Escollera near Estepona Port. Enjoy a wide selection of fish dishes – from traditional fried fish to seabass and sardine skewers.

Another good place to eat to add to your list is Restaurante El Palangre .

18. Spend half-day at Playa del Cristo

Alongside the port of Estepona, Playa del Cristo is a peaceful dark sand beach perfect for families. The beach has a playground area as well as shadow places to keep you away from the sun when it’s strong.

Playa del Cristo is accessible, has parking, and there are two beach restaurants where you can grab some traditional food.

19. Visit Museo Arqueológico de Estepona

Estepona Archaeological museum.

The Archaeological Museum of Estepona is a must-see for anyone who loves museums. Located in Casa del Aljibe, a beautiful 18th-century building from the Muslim period.

Here, you can contemplate a collection of unique and valuable items that have been discovered in the last few years.

This is the ideal place to learn about Estepona’s history and previous civilizations. Admire anything from a 5000-year-old mini statue of the Venus of Estepona to the grave goods of the Roman and Byzantine empires.

20. Check out the Estepona Street market

With over 250 stalls, the Estepona Street market is one of the markets to check out in Costa del Sol.

It’s a very lively market where you can find anything from fresh vegetables and fruits and spices to clothes, jewellery, handmade crafts and flowers.

The market takes place in Calle Eslovaquia from 9 am to 2 pm every Wednesday.

If you aren’t in Estepona on a Wednesday, visiting Mercado Municipal de Abastos (Estepona’s main market) is an alternative option.

21. Play golf near Estepona

golf in costa del sol

Estepona is a hotspot for golfers in Costa del Sol. The weather, the pitch conditions and the surroundings are some of the reasons to choose Estepona as your next golf destination.

If you’re wondering what the best golf resorts near Estepona are, you need to check out Doña Julia Golf Club, Valle Romano and El Paraíso Golf.

22. Explore Dólmenes de Coromínas

Dólmenes de Coromínas is a place worth visiting for anyone who loves archaeology. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to visit it on my recent visit to Estepona, but it’s on my list.

This archaeological museum counts five unique monuments for you to discover and also hosts concerts – from jazz and classical to flamenco music – so it’s worth checking out their calendar. It’s definitely a distinctive place to enjoy a live concert.

It’s located 15 minute drive from the old town; therefore, you’ll need a car to get to this museum.

23. Go on a scenic hike to Sierra Bermeja

A view of Sierra Bermeja, Malaga, Spain.

Sierra Bermeja is a mountain range that goes from Ronda to Casares. What makes Sierra Bermeja unique is the presence of peridotite, a volcanic rock that gives this mountain range garnet tones.

The weather conditions, rocks and location are perfect for the growth of unique plants that you won’t find anywhere else.

Most of the hiking trails in the area are either moderate or challenging but take you through beautiful scenery. Pinsapo to Picos Los Reales is among the most popular hikes. In this almost 10 km circular trail, you’ll see a waterfall as well as breathtaking views of Africa and the Sierra Nevada mountains.

24. Experience Selwo Aventura

selwo aventura, estepona, spain

Selwo Aventura offers a fun day out for families and those who love animals. A few minutes drive from Estepona, so there’s no reason not to visit this safari.

It’s home to thousands of animals (from monkeys and lions to zebras and parrots), some of which live in semi-captive conditions.

The safari is huge, so you can spend a full day exploring the different parts and seeing the animals. If you love a bit of adrenaline, make sure to go on the zip wire and suspension bridge. I was a bit nervous about going on the zip wire, but I loved it once I tried it.

When visiting Selwo Aventura with little ones, it’s worth checking out the daily exhibitions and animal experiences. There are talks about birds, elephants and much more.

If you’re travelling across the Costa del Sol, you might also hear about Selwo Marina in Benalmadena. I recommend Selwo Aventura over Selwo Marina. It has many more animals, it’s bigger, and I find the price to be more reasonable.

📌 Get your Selwo Aventura tickets here

25. Go on a day trip to Marbella

white buildings in the old town of marbella

Estepona is only 30 minute by car, so it’s a fantastic short day trip, and you can do it by driving or getting the bus.

Marbella isn’t only about its port and parties; there’s much more than that in this coastal town.

You have many activities to do in Marbella in a day. Marbella old town is a must-see – its picturesque whitewashed streets with bougainvillaea flowers hanging down the walls, its monuments and buildings like Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación church and its former castle.

During your time in the old town , stop at Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square) to enjoy a drink or meal. The atmosphere is vibrant.

Puerto Banus is another place to add to your list. It’s one of the most expensive ports in Spain. Here you can see impressive yachts and luxurious shops.

If you visit Marbella in the summer, go to the beach. Marbella is home to some of the best golden sand beaches in Costa del Sol .

26. Go on a day trip to Gibraltar

apes den in top of the rock, gibraltar

Would you love a day trip in which you can visit a new country? If so, you’re lucky because Estepona is close to Gibraltar, at only 45 minute drive.

Despite some people thinking Gibraltar isn’t special, this day trip is one of my favourites because you get to see another country, and it isn’t any country but a special one because of its multicultural influence.

Plus, you’ll have plenty of things to do on a day trip from Estepona to Gibraltar.

The first thing that you should add to your list is going to the Rock and Upper Nature Reserve. This is the most emblematic place in Gibraltar.

See the monkeys, get breathtaking views of Gibraltar, Spain and Africa from one place and explore the beauty of the reserve.

Other things to do in Gibraltar include shopping at Main Street, exploring its colourful streets, and spending the day at the Catalan beach.

You can visit Estepona year-round because of its sunny and warm weather.

Summer is best for relaxing at the beach or doing water activities, whereas autumn, winter and spring are best for sightseeing.

Although you can go sightseeing in summer too, it’s more challenging because of the extreme heat. The temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius (104°F).

Estepona Guide and Tourist Information

Why Choose Estepona?

The Garden of the Costa del Sol

Estepona is known as the “Jardín de la Costa del Sol” thanks to it’s year round abundance of flowers displayed throughout the town, especially in the narrow, pretty streets of the historic Old Town. However there is much more to this charming Spanish town which is surrounded by the Mediterranean one one side and the Sierra Bermeja mountain range on the other.

Far away from it’s noisy neighbours in Marbella and Puerto Banus, Estepona aims to offer a different experience and way of life; long sandy beaches dominate the coastline, it’s old town invites you to get lost in it’s flowerpot lined streets, the avenues and plazas are filled as equally with bars, cafes and restaurants as they are with flowers and the friendly and relaxed people of the town.

Take a look below at some of Stay At Estepona’s top choices, including where to eat, drink and sleep in Estepona or click below for to view our blog for the complete guide to the prettiest town on the Costa del Sol.

It’s also home to Estepona’s popular Sunday Market as well as the heart of Estepona’s bustling late night scene.

The area before the lighthouse is home to charming old Fisherman’s cottages, adorned with flower pots and also home to the beautiful Nuestra Señora del Carmen, home to the statue of the Virgen del Carmen the town’s patron saint, which every year is taken out to the sea in one of Andalucia’s most iconic ceremonies.

The Beaches

Estepona counts on 21km of coastline, most of which is lined with beautiful beaches. The main beaches in town and the most popular are Playa de la Rada and Playa del Cristo . La Rada runs along the beachfront promenade and is a wide beach with stunning views over to Gibraltar and Morocco, whilst the Playa del Cristo is located at the far side of the fishing port and it’s sheltered bay and shallow water make it the perfect family beach.

The other beaches stretch along the coastline in the direction of Marbella and include some of the area’s most popular beach restaurants or “Chiringuitos” where many an hour can be idylled or partied away right on the beach front whether in Summer or Winter.

With 320 days of sunshine a year, Estepona is a watersports lovers paradise and there are no shortage of rentals for Kayaks and Stand-up-Paddles as well as Kitesurf and Surf schools.

Outdoor Activities

A Natural Paradise

The Rio Padron and Rio Castor make excellent spots to cool off in the rivers crystal clear water during the summer months. Estepona’s Red Mountain

Sierra Bermeja

The 1,449m high Sierra Bermeja provides a dramatic backdrop to the Estepona landscape with it’s red rocks that give it it’s name. The mountain is home to the rare and ancient “Pinsapo” or Spanish fir, found only in a handful of places in Spain and Morocco and an emblem of the area.

It’s very rare for mountains to reach this height, so close to the sea and the breathtaking views from the summit are truly some of the best on the whole Costa del Sol. There are numerous hiking trails in the area, ranging in difficulty and most are easily accessible .

Coastal Path / Beach Promenade

Senda Litoral / Paseo Maritimo

Estepona’s beachfront promenade, the “Paseo de Maritimo” goes from the Port of Estepona at the western end of town and runs east for 3km alongside the beach. Lined with beautiful and varied displays of flower and plants and overlooking the beach, it makes it the favourite spot for a Sunday afternoon stroll and for joggers.

Many of the towns most popular bars & restaurants line the route which also runs right past the main entrance to the Old Town and the main shopping streets.

The Paseo also compromises part of the “Senda Litoral” or Coastal Path which is a magnificent plant to connect 14 municipalities along the coast, from Manilva to Nerja and running for approx. 160km. For Estepona’s part, the Path is continuously being extended in both directions with beautiful wooden bridges crossing the many stream and river mouths.

Colourful flowers in pots in Estepona's Old Town

7 reasons why you should visit Estepona, Spain

Lucia Pöllä

Lucia Pöllä

  • 7 reasons to visit Estepona, Spain

Planning a trip to Estepona? Here are our top picks...

Stay : Hotel Casa Veracruz

Guided tour : Estepona Old Town

Experience: Estepona Bay sunset cruise

Watch : Flamenco Show

Day trip: Gibraltar

Estepona is a traditional Andalusian town on the sun-kissed Costa del Sol in Southern Spain. It has the perfect summer combination of sandy beaches and well-serviced resorts, while still retaining much of the authentic character of the old Pueblos Blancos - white villages.

While it may have gotten some bad (drug-related) press a few years ago, its reputation has quickly recovered - and for good reason. With a blend of traditional Andalusian character and modern amenities, Estepona offers a unique Spanish experience away from the usual tourist crowds.

The town is earning its name as one of the most popular hotspots on the Costa del Sol, so don't be tempted to skip Estepona and head straight for Marbella (the more popular option). Not only is Estepona less busy and touristy than Marbella, but you also get much better value for money. Here are just a few more reasons why you should add Estepona to your Costa del Sol itinerary.

Flowers in red pots in Estepona's old town

1. Estepona's Old Town is incredibly charming

The historic centre in Estepona surpasses all expectations with its charming Andalusian village vibes that transport you back in time. Imagine wandering through a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, white-washed houses adorned with colourful flower pots, and charming plazas.

You can explore the narrow and tranquil lanes, smell the flowers, stop by a fountain and take a break at a local tapas bar. Two top historic locations in the old town that you should check out are San Luis Castle and Plaza del Reloj town clock.

Estepona is known as the ‘Garden of Costa del Sol’, and in the old town, you can easily see why. No street is left without a beautiful flower display, and colourful pots decorate the walls of each home, bodega or shop. The pots are also colour-coordinated, so one street is a display of blue pots, then the next is filled with pink pots, and so on...

Estepona’s old town is the perfect place to wander around, admire the scenery and sit down for a drink with a view. If you only have one day to see Estepona, you should definitely spend it in the old town!

The entrance to the Estepona orchidarium

2. You can see orchids from around the world

The Orchid House in Estepona, also known as El Orquidario by the locals, is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the town.

The large collection of plants housed inside boasts an impressive display of 5,000 specimens and over 1,300 orchid species sourced from all around the globe. You can marvel at a stunning waterfall tower at 17 meters as well as traverse your way through a vertical garden designed to showcase the rich diversity of plant life.

Whether taking a peaceful stroll or seeking more knowledge on unique orchid varieties and their captivating traits, this spot is an ideal destination for nature lovers.

The exquisite Orchidarium sits right in the heart of Estepona's historic centre and is easily accessible for vistors. Admission fees are €3 for adults, and €1 for children aged 4-11 years.

Visit their Facebook page for information about upcoming events, concerts or exhibitions.

3. Estepona has incredible street art

Art enthusiasts will certainly be mesmerized by the stunning murals in Estepona. These captivating pieces of street art are on display all around the old town, on sides of apartment blocks and reach impressive sizes.

The 'Mural Route' is a collection of over 50 large-scale murals, beautifying the buildings across the town. An arrow painted on the sidewalk of the first block guides you to the perfect vantage point for capturing this monumental piece of art with your camera.

As you meander through Estepona, you'll encounter many unique murals, each one a testament to the town's creative spirit. This initiative has not only revitalized neighbourhoods but also encourages exploration off the beaten path. The art is diverse, ranging from abstract to hyper-realistic, each telling a unique story.

Malagueta Beach in Malaga on a sunny day

7. You can explore the Costa del Sol from Estepona

There is enough to do in Estepona to keep you busy for a long time... That said, if you want a change of perspective, there are plenty of other towns in the region just a short distance away.

Gibraltar makes an excellent addition to your travel itinerary and only 45 minutes' drive from Estepona. The charming town is a fascinating fusion of British and Spanish cultures that is well worth seeing for yourself.

The major attraction is, of course, the renowned Rock of Gibraltar, which dominates the skyline andis home to a tribe of wild Barbary macaques. If you don’t fancy a drive in a car, or using local transport, you can book the Estepona to Gibraltar day tour from a local travel company at a very affordable price.

You also can't leave the Costa del Sol without visiting its sunny capital - Malaga . Birthplace of Picasso (and Antonio Banderas), home to the ancient Alcazaba, Roman Theater and Gibralfaro Castle, Malaga has so much to offer even for a day trip!

You can get to Malaga from Estepona easily using public transport or by booking a day tour with a local travel company.

Planning a trip to Estepona? Stay at the Hotel Casa Veracruz in the old town.

The Kremlin is Russia's mythic refuge, a self contained city with a multitude of palaces, armories, and churches, a medieval fortress that links the modern nation to its legendary past in the ancient state of Kievan Rus'. As the dominance of Kiev faded and its empire fragmented under the weight of foreign invasion and internecine strife in the 11th and 12th centuries, regional princes gained power. In 1147, as Kievan Rus was experiencing its final death throes, a chronicler recorded that a feast was held at the hunting lodge of Prince Yuri Dolgorukiy, ruling prince of Rostov and Suzdal. The lodge was perfectly situated atop a hill overlooking the Moskva and Neglina rivers, prompting its development (in such troubled times) as a fortified town, or Kremlin.

Within a century, the town had risen to become an independent principality within the Mongol empire. By the middle of the 14th century, its princes had gained such pre-eminence that Moscow was made the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. With Ivan the Great (1462-1505) at its helm, Muscovite rule extended over all of Russia, and the Kremlin became more magnificent, befitting its role as the seat of Russian power. By 1480 the once modest hunting lodge had become an imposing fortress city. Its stone walls were graced by the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption, where Ivan defiantly tore up the charter binding Moscow to Mongol rule. Over the next two centuries, until Peter the Great transferred the capital of Russia to St. Petersburg, the Kremlin served as the central stage for the magnificent and occasionally horrific history of the Tsars.

With the shift of power to St. Petersburg, the city and the Kremlin declined. However, the Bolsheviks' choice of Moscow as their capital in March 1918 returned it to preeminence, and during Soviet rule the Kremlin experienced its second life as a great center of power. Although the Soviet state certainly left its mark on the Kremlin, the centuries-old citadel very much retains the aura of early Tsarist Russia. Especially in Cathedral Square, where the spirits of Ivan the Terrible, Boris Godunov, and the early Romanovs loom much larger than those of Stalin or even Lenin himself.

Sites of The Kremlin

The State Kremlin Palace This modern glass and concrete structure, completed in 1961, is the Kremlin's most recent edifice. It was built during the halcyon days of the Khruschev administration to host Communist Party congresses and was executed in appropriately magnificent style. The palace's most prominent feature was its huge auditorium (6000 seats), the stage of which was surmounted by a monumental bas-relief head of Lenin surrounded by gilded rays. Today the palace is used for performances by the Kremlin Ballet Company, and the once familiar relief of Lenin is gone.

Senate The graceful neoclassical Senate building, commissioned by Catherine the Great, is one of several fine works in Moscow by the architect Matvey Kazakov. The building was intended by Catherine to serve as a meeting place for an advisory council, but it is better known for having been the location of Lenin's office after the Revolution. In a recent modernization, however, his preserved offices were delivered into posterity. Today, the Senate serves as the official Presidential residence.

Tsar Cannon and Bell These two curiosities form an oddly appropriate pair. Both are among the largest of their kind in the world, and neither has ever worked. The 40-ton Tsar Cannon, built during the reign of Ivan the Terrible's imbecilic son Fyodor in 1586, possesses a barrel in excess of five meters long and a calibre of 890 mm. The gun should in theory have been capable of smiting foolish attackers with projectiles the size of wine casks. As if the cannon's sheer size were not inspiring enough, the barrel and carriage are adorned with a relief of the redoubtable Fyodor as well as a scene in which a fierce Russian lion devastates a snake symbolizing Russia's enemies.

The two hundred ton Tsar Bell, though the largest in the world, was never successfully completed, much less rung. A smaller predecessor (weighing in at a mere 130 tons) was built in the middle of the 17th century but was destroyed in the Moscow fire of 1701. Three decades later the Empress Anna ordered the fragments to be recast into a much larger bell, but the resultant wonder cracked in 1737 after having fallen into its casting pit. Another century passed before the bell was lifted and set in its present location. Beside the bell lies a small eleven-ton scrap that fell from the bell during its excavation.

Ivan the Great Belltower Dominating not only Cathedral Square but the entire Kremlin is the gleaming gilt dome of the Ivan the Great Belltower, long the tallest structure in all of Russia. Constructed of bright white stone and soaring to a height of over eighty meters, the bell tower was begun in the early 16th century and completed in 1600, during the reign of Boris Godunov. In the adjacent belfrey hangs the massive 64-ton Resurrection Bell, dating from the nineteenth century.

Assumption Cathedral Assumption Cathedral is the oldest, largest, and most important of the Kremlin's many churches. It stands on the site of a small cathedral erected by Ivan I around 1330 to mark Moscow's new status as the seat of Russian orthodoxy. A century and a half later, Ivan III (the Great) decided that his predecessor's modest and by then time-worn work was insufficient as a symbol of the city's grandeur. After a brief and unsuccessful flirtation with local builders, he decided to go all out and hire an Italian (after all, it was the Renaissance). Thus, in 1475, Alberti (a.k.a. Aristotle) Fioravanti arrived from Bologna. After conducting a tour of Vladimir, Pskov, and Novgorod in order to gain a sense of the traditions of Russian ecclesiatical architecture, Fioravanti returned to Moscow and set to work. A mere four years later, he had finished a veritable tour de force, a cathedral so satisfying to his patron that Fioravanti's request to return to Italy prompted Ivan to imprison him. Fioravanti died in captivity a few years later.

The Cathedral itself made history almost before the paint was dry, for it was on its steps in 1480 that Ivan tore up the charter binding Moscow's princes to tribute to the Mongols. In addition to its historical significance as the primary church of Russian Orthodoxy (and thus as the site of all manner of coronations, funerals, victory services, and intrigues), the Cathedral is notable for its accomplished architectural and decorative elements. Its frescoes, icons, and the elaborate Throne of Monomakh are of particular interest for visitors, as is Fioravanti's archetypal synthesis of traditional Russian ecclesiastical architecture.

The Church of the Deposition of the Robe This comparatively modest structure was built by Russian craftsmen just a few years after the completion of the Cathedral of the Assumption. It now houses a fascinating collection of wooden figures.

The Cathedral of the Archangel Michael This most Italianate of the Kremlin's churches, the last of Ivan the Great's contributions to Cathedral Square, is the burial place of the early Tsars and their predecessors, the princes of Moscow. Commissioned in 1505 and built by the Venetian architect Alevisio, its notably foreign features include the scallop-shell decoration of its gables and the ornate Corinthian capitals of its columns. With the notable exception of Boris Godunov (buried at the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergei), the Cathedral houses the remains of everyone from Grand Prince Ivan Kalita (1325-41) to Tsar Ivan V (1682-96). Unfortunately, the tombs themselves do little to convey the passage of history, as all of the stone sarcophagi date from the 17th century and their bronze covers from the beginning of the twentieth.

The Cathedral of the Annunciation The golden-domed Cathedral of the Annunciation served as the private chapel of the Tsars. It was raised by Ivan III in the late 1440s on the foundations of a much earlier and more modest church and has been damaged, repaired, enlarged, and altered on numerous occasions since then. One addition deserving of special appreciation is the Grosnenskiy Porch, found at the Cathedral's southeast corner. The porch was built by Ivan the Terrible in 1572 after he contravened church doctrine by marrying for a fourth time (the Orthodox Church allowed only three marriages). While the Church Council appreciated Ivan's occasionally excessive reactions to opposition and thus accepted the marriage, it was able to express its dismay by asking the Tsar to refrain thereafter from entering the Cathedral to attend services. The porch was the resultant compromise, and from it Ivan would carry out his religious devotions from behind a specially-constructed grille.

Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles and The Patriarch's Palace These two buildings are in fact a continuous structure, together constituting the Kremlin domain of the patriarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church. Constructed by the Patriarch Nikon in the 1650s, they now serve as a museum of 17th-century applied arts, including ecclesiastical regalia as well as furniture and domestic objects from the period.

The Terem, Faceted, and Great Kremlin Palaces None of the three great palaces of the Kremlin are open to visitors--at least not yet. The earliest of the three is the Terem Palace, which is the oldest building in the Kremlin. The Palace served as the Imperial residence until the removal of the capital to St. Petersburg in 1712. The Faceted Palace, built by Ivan III, was used primarily for audiences and feasts, a function revived by Soviet leaders. The last of the three palaces, the Great Kremlin, was built in the early 19th-century as a Moscow residence for Nicholas I. All three of the palaces possess extraordinary interior decorations belied by their rather unremarkable exteriors.

The Armory The Armory began in the early 16th century as a purely functional storehouse for the Kremlin's weaponry. However, within a few decades that original and prosaic structure had gained the added function of a workshop and repository for all sorts of treasures of the increasingly magnificent Imperial court. In 1813, following Napoleon's invasion, the Armory building became an exhibition hall and museum, though the Imperial arms and regalia had long since been removed by Peter the Great to St. Petersburg. It was only in 1851 that the collection was returned to Moscow, where it was installed in the current building, then new. Despite the loss of significant items in the collection during the early nineteenth century, the treasures contained within the Armory are overwhelming. From the chalice of Yuri Dolgoruky and the helm and armor of Boris Godunov to a stupendous collection of over fifty Faberge eggs, visitors are presented with an array of objects that is staggering in its historical interest and spectacular richness. Next door, at the Diamond Treasury, visitors can catch a glimpse of the infamous 190-carat Orlov Diamond.
