Australian Visa Information

Unless you are an Australian citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country. All other passport holders, regardless of age, must apply for a visa before leaving home. You can apply for a range of Australian visa types, including tourist visas and working holiday visas, via the ETA app or on the  Department of Home Affairs website.

There are different Australian visa types available for travellers to Australia. Knowing which Australian visa to apply for depends on the length of your stay, your passport and the purpose of your visit. You’ll also need to meet certain financial and medical requirements, be outside of Australia when applying and maintain health insurance for the duration of your stay.

Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) This visa allows you to visit Australia as many times as you want, for up to a year, and stay for three months each visit. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of countries and regions, who live outside Australia. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is  here .

All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app. Agents can assist you in the application process, but you must be physically present as a live facial image is required.

eVisitor  (subclass 651) This is a free visa for multiple visits to Australia for tourism or business purposes for up to three months at a time within a 12-month period. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of European countries and it cannot be extended.

Visitor visa  (subclass 600) The Visitor visa allows you to visit Australia, either for tourism or business purposes. It is open to all nationalities. Generally, a period of stay of up to three months is granted, but up to 12 months may be granted in certain circumstances. Applicants will have to pay a fee to submit their application.

The application process may differ depending on which visa you need.

You can only apply for the  Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is located  here .

For other visas, you can apply online by creating an ImmiAccount and completing the application process. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of your travel date to allow enough time for processing. You may be asked to provide further supporting information. You will be notified in writing if your tourist visa is approved and it will be digitally linked to your passport. For more information on different visa types, and Australian visa requirements including how to apply for an Australian visa, visit the  Department of Home Affairs  website.

If you are already in Australia and hold a valid Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) you can extend your stay by applying for another visa, such as a Visitor visa (subclass 600). An eVisitor (subclass 651) cannot be extended.

See the Department of Home Affairs website for details.

Working Holiday Visas

Australia's Working Holiday Maker program allows visitors aged under 30 (or 35 in certain cases) who hold a passport from a participating country to travel and work in Australia. Working holiday visas are valid for one year, or up to three years if you meet certain conditions.

Visitor Visa Australia – Questions and Answers

Is a tourist visa same as a visitor visa.

In effect, yes. It all depends on the type of Travel or Holiday visa you are applying for. There are multiple types of Visitor visa: Tourist stream, Business Visitor visa Australia, Frequent Traveller stream, Sponsored Family stream, ETA an eVisitor visas . Each one is for a different purpose and some are restricted as to who can apply for them.

What are the requirements for a Visitor visa?

I get asked this question more than any other. There are many requirements even for a Visitor visa. Requirements in part are related to eligibility. For example, for a Visitor visa, you have to want to come to Australia for a holiday or tourism or to visit friends or family (and you are also allowed to do short periods of study). So you would need to show that you are intending to do these things – for example, by showing that you have an invitation from family or friends to visit them, or that you have a job in your home country so therefore you can only spend a short period of time in Australia.

There are also requirements like character and health. If you have a criminal record then you must declare it, and depending on how serious it is may effect whether you will be given your Visitor visa or not. If you are sick or have some medical condition you must also declare this and it can result in your been asked to have a visa medical examination or more.

How do I apply for a Visitor visa?

To apply for a Visitor visa first make sure you are eligible for the visa. Then to make an Australian Visitor visa application you will need to either do a paper application or an online application. You may be able to make an application through the Australian Embassy or Consulate in your country. To apply for even a Visitor visa Australia can be complex so if you decide to get professional help with your application then your Migration Agent will usually take care of most or all of the aspects of the application for you and guide you through the entire process.

Is an Interview required for Australian Visitor visa?

No, you don’t usually need to attend an Interview when you apply fora Visitor visa Australia. Sometimes they will phone you unannounced and do a short Interview at that time, and a formal Interview may even be required if there are serious concerns or issues about an application.

Is return ticket required for Visitor visa to Australia?

When you apply for Visitor visa Australia there is no official requirement to have a return ticket. However, if a visa is granted, in some jurisdictions you will not be permitted to depart without a forwarding ticket. Also when you enter Australia, officers at the border need to be satisfied that you are intending to and have the means to depart Australia before their visa expires before they will be allowed to enter Australia. Therefore, it is always safer to have a return or forwarding ticket before planning to enter Australia on a Visitor visa.

How long is the Processing time for a Visitor visa?

The Australia Visitor visa processing time can vary depending on where and when you apply. Generally speaking, it can take anywhere from 1-5 weeks to process an Australian Visitor visa application. The Australia Visitor visa processing time is usually shortest when you submit a complete application with all of the required information and supporting documents.

How long is a Visitor visa good for?

A Visitor visa can be valid for different periods of time from a few weeks to up to a year. Normally the times periods given on a Visitor visa will be 3, 6 or 12 months. In some cases an up to 3 year validity period can be given. When you make an Australian Visitor visa application you would normally request the period of time that you want to stay in Australia – and that may be for only a few weeks or so, or for a much longer period, and then the Department of Home Affairs ( DOHA ) will make a final decision as to how much time they will give you.

How much bank balance is required for an Australian Visitor visa?

Many people ask me this question. The answer is that there is no definite required set amount of money required to show for a Visitor visa. It all depends on your individual circumstances like how long you want to stay in Australia. DOHA usually look at your circumstances as a whole like if you have a job or assets or financial support from someone else, and therefore a bank balance is only one financial consideration among many.

Can I extend my Visitor visa in Australia?

Yes, itcan be possible to extend your Visitor visa in Australia. However we need to be clear here – despite what is commonly thought, there is no such thing as an ‘extension’ of an Australian Visitor visa. If you want to extend your time in Australia you need to apply for another visa. And whether you can do that all depends on the conditions of your current visa. Sometimes a condition is placed on a Visitor visa which blocks the holder of the visa from applying for another visa while they are still in Australia. This is done deliberately to force the person to leave Australia. However, if there is no such condition then you are free to apply for a new visa and extend your time in Australia.

How Australian Visa Advice (AVA) can help: Please note that Australia is very possibly the strictest country in the world when it comes to Immigration and visa. The processing time will still vary as per the workload at the embassy, the time required for biometrics, if the form has been filled in incorrectly, or the documents are missing or whether it’s taking longer to verify the information provided.

Applying for an Australia tourist visa from India , you are automatically benefitted with the Fast-track application as well. Fast-track application is how you can reduce the processing time for the visa and get it issued within 2 days. This privilege may not be applicable in certain cases like - if you have a health problem, there is an issue with the character or if the visa application has been refused previously.

The visa fees needed for the visa varies depending on various aspects. There are service charges, biometric charges, processing fee and other aspects as well. The fee will vary if you have applied for the urgent requirement of the visa.

When the application form is completed, it is to be submitted to the embassy with all the required documents. Also, there are certain things that can be done or are to be done after the submission and the embassy must be informed. Such as -

  • Inform the embassy if there are any mistakes in the application form
  • Withdraw the application if you have a change of plans
  • Any changes in the phone number, address, or the passport must be informed
  • Changes in the relationship status or if there is a birth of a child when the visa is processing should be known to the embassy

In order to check the status of your visa processing, you will have to visit the official website of the embassy or the Australia Immigration. You can fill in the required details like the application number and track the visa status . Else, you can even call the embassy with your visa application number and get an update on the status.

If you submit your application with honesty, and genuine documents, and have a clean and healthy background, you will receive your visa easily.

Can I work while on a tourist visa in Australia?

How much funds are required for an Australian tourist visa?

Are income tax returns mandatory for an Australian tourist visa?

No, it is not mandatory, however, as one of the eligibility criteria for the visa is to prove that you possess sufficient funds during your stay in the country, you will have to submit documents showing these. An income tax returns record is one of the documents that can prove financial resources. As a result, it is acceptable, but not mandatory.

Can I extend my Australian tourist visa from India?

No, you cannot extend your Australia tourist visa at all. However, you can apply for a new tourist visa once your current permit ends. This can be done from outside Australia, or within the country if you do not have a ‘no further stay’ condition.

Can I get an Australian student visa after getting rejected of an Australian tourist visa?

The Visitor (subclass 600) visa

  • Can I apply for the Visitor (subclass 60) visa in the Tourist Stream?
  • Visitor (subclass 600) Visa in the Tourist Stream Fact Sheet

Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream

Visitor (subclasses 600, 651, and 601) visas.

  • Travel to, enter, and stay in Australia for up to 12 months;
  • Study in Australia for up to 3 months;
  • Engage in business visitor activities; and
  • Apply for another visa to remain in Australia (such as a Partner visa).
  • Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream;
  • Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Sponsored Family Stream;
  • Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Business Visitor Stream;
  • Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Approved Destination Status Stream;
  • Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Frequent Traveller Stream;
  • eVisitor (subclass 651) visa; and
  • Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) visa.

Overall, the Visitor (subclass 600) visa is for tourists, people who wish to visit their family in Australia, and people who wish to visit Australia for business purposes.

The Visitor (subclass 600) visa is divided into 5 different streams:

tourist visa interview australia

Each different stream has different eligibility criteria. You need to know which stream to apply for, depending on the reasons for, and the circumstances surrounding, your visit to Australia.

The Department of Home Affairs will only decide your Visitor (subclass 600) visa application based on the eligibility criteria of the selected stream. You will not be considered for another stream. For example, if you don’t meet the eligibility requirements of the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Sponsored Family Stream, no other stream will be considered, and the visa application will simply be refused.

Therefore, you must be careful about which stream you lodge your Visitor (subclass 600) visa in.

If you wish to visit Australia for tourism purposes, or to see an Australian citizen or permanent resident who is your parent, spouse, de facto partner, child, brother or sister, the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream may be an option for you.

You could also apply for the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream if you wish to:

  • Visit friends, or other relatives,
  • Study for less than 3 months, or
  • Stay in Australia for more than 3 months.

However, you will not be eligible for the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream if the visit is for:

  • Business purposes, or
  • Medical treatment.

Can I apply for the Visitor (subclass 600) visa in the Tourist Stream?

You meet the genuine temporary entrant criteria.

Visitor visas are primarily for allowing you to stay in Australia temporarily, for reasons such as:

  • Visiting friends and family in Australia;
  • Touring Australia;
  • Entering Australia for business visitor purposes; and
  • Studying for less than three months.

You cannot do the following things while on a Visitor visa:

  • Live in Australia long-term; or
  • Study for more than three months.

Therefore, the Visitor visa has what is called Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria. The GTE criteria requires the applicant to show that they have a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily for the purposes for which the Visitor visa was granted.

The Department of Home Affairs will consider a range of factors to decide whether you are a Genuine Temporary Entrant.

tourist visa interview australia

Many Visitor visas are refused on grounds that the applicant did not meet the GTE criteria.

I want to migrate to Australia permanently. Can I apply for a Visitor visa?

You could still be granted a Visitor visa to enter Australia even if you intend to apply for a further visa once arriving onshore, to eventually migrate permanently. An intention to apply for another visa after entering Australia on a Visitor visa does not necessarily disentitle you from lodging, or being granted, a Visitor visa.

For example, you may have already stated an intention to apply for a further visa after arriving in Australia in a previous travel exemption application. You may have already lodged a Partner visa or Work visa but want to lodge a Visitor visa so that you can enter Australia while it processes.

However, you should be cautious about what you write in your Visitor visa application. You will need to use specific language that carefully addresses the GTE criteria, to ensure that your Visitor visa application is not refused.

I am truly thankful that I found Visa and Citizenship Lawyers online

I am truly thankful that I found Visa and Citizenship Lawyers online via a Facebook group when my partner and I were separated for over two years during the border lockdowns. My partner and I decided to engage Adam and his team in July 2022. Right from the start, our lawyer was very engaged in our case. He always answered our questions promptly, clarified issues for us patiently, and most importantly, he guided us around the insufficient relationship evidence we had due to our long separation and pointed out errors we had written down inadvertently. The entire process of gathering over countless documents to prove that our relationship is genuine and ongoing has been arduous, stressful, and emotional too. But through the entire journey, I am comforted by the fact that we have a capable lawyer guiding us and standing behind us to ensure that we were on the right path. I was at peace knowing that we have a capable, confident, and experienced team to ensure that our application is as watertight as possible and that we did not make any mistakes. I always knew that the visa grant is not in our lawyers’ hands. But the Visa and Citizenship Lawyers team helped us put together the best and strongest possible application, and they did an excellent job. I am grateful for them and I recommend them highly.

Visa requirements for visiting Australia

Don't let a forgotten tourist visa ruin your Australian getaway © xavierarnau/Getty Images

Planning a trip to Australia ? Whether you’re heading Down Under for a short break or extended working holiday, you’ll likely need a visa.

Here’s your complete guide to filling out your paperwork for a visit to Australia.

Do I need a visa for Australia?

Most visitors to Australia will need a visa, but the type of visa you apply for depends on your country of origin, how long you plan to stay in Australia and what you plan to do while you’re there.

Most tourists must apply for either an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or a visitor visa before traveling. The exception is New Zealand passport holders, who are issued a Special Category visa upon arrival.

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your intended stay. You’ll also need to ensure you have sufficient funds to cover your stay. Depending on your visa category, you may be asked for proof of this upon arrival.

What type of visa do I need to travel to Australia?

The Australian Department of Home Affairs’ (DoHA) visa finder can help you determine what visas you’re eligible for based on your citizenship, your travel purpose and your intended length of stay.

Here are the three main tourist visa categories:

For visitors from visa-exempt countries: ETA (subclass 601)

If you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country – including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada or Singapore – you’re eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) . With an ETA you can visit Australia as many times as you like for tourism purposes within a one-year window, staying for up to three months per visit.

Attached digitally to your passport number, an ETA allows for a simplified entry process into Australia. An application needs to be completed via the dedicated ETA app before you arrive and usually is processed within a day. However, it’s recommended that you apply for it a few days in advance to ensure you have the ETA in time for your departure.

While ETAs are free, there is an application service charge of $20.

If you’re already in Australia and you want to extend your stay, you will need to apply for a Visitor visa.

For visitors from European countries: eVisitor visa (subclass 651)

The eVisitor visa is free and available for passport holders from most European countries. It offers similar conditions to an ETA: Visitors can stay for up to three months for tourism purposes. It’s valid for 12 months, with multiple entries permitted.

You can apply for the eVisitor online. Processing time is usually within a day, but it’s recommended that you apply well in advance of your intended travel date in case of delays. This visa can’t be extended, so if you wish to stay longer, you’ll need to apply for a Visitor visa.

If you hold a passport from a country that’s eligible for both an ETA and an eVisitor visa, you’ll find the two options are nearly identical. The main difference is how you apply for them: ETAs must be applied for through an app with a fee of $20. There is no charge for eVisitor visas, but you’ll need to register for an ImmiAccount and apply online through a web browser.

For all other tourists: Visitor visa (subclass 600)

If you’re not eligible for an ETA or an eVisa and plan to visit Australia for tourism-related purposes, you’ll need to apply for a Visitor visa from outside Australia. This visa may be granted for up to 12 months and may be single or multiple entry. Conditions are determined on a case-by-case basis. A visitor visa starts at $190, but there may be other associated costs including health examinations, police clearances or biometrics, depending on your passport.

Although most visitor visas are processed within a few weeks, it can take longer in peak periods, so it must be applied for well in advance of your trip. Standard processing times change regularly and can be monitored on the DoHA site.

Once you apply, you can track your application through your ImmiAccount. You may be required to submit additional information, so check your application regularly to provide any further details to keep the process moving.

How do I extend my visa to Australia?

Enjoying your stay in Australia and don't want to leave? We don’t blame you.

Depending on your visa, you may be able to apply for a new visa to stay in the country longer. Visitors who are already inside Australia and wish to stay longer as tourists may use the onshore Visitor visa (also subclass 600) to extend their stay.

Make sure you apply for your new visa before your current visa expires. If you’ve submitted your application before your current visa expires, you’ll be granted a free bridging visa until your new one is processed.

What if I want to work and travel around Australia?

Working holidays are a popular option for travelers who want to fund their adventures and immerse themselves in Australian life and culture.

Australia’s Working Holiday Maker program is available for visitors between the ages of 18 and 30 (and up to 35 in some cases) from 40 participating countries and jurisdictions around the world.

There are two classes of visas available under this program: t he Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) and the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) . Which one you apply for depends on the passport you hold. Both are valid for 12 months and cost $635, and both enable you to legally work while in Australia.

Many working holiday visa makers find that one year isn’t enough. Fortunately, you may be able to extend your working holiday visa for a second or even a third year. In order to do so, you’ll need to complete “specified work” in a “regional area” for a period of three months (for a second year) or six months (for a third year) first.

This specified work is usually referred to as “farm work” in backpacker circles, but it’s a bit of a misnomer. It’s a common misconception that you need to head to the woop-woops (that Aussie for “middle of nowhere”) and pick fruit to complete your specified work. In fact, there are a range of approved industries the program , including tourism and hospitality, construction and bushfire recovery. Likewise, “regional areas” aren’t just found in remote rural areas; some major cities (including Darwin and Adelaide) are eligible post codes. So while you might find yourself harvesting bananas in a tiny town in tropical Queensland, you could just as easily find yourself serving tables at a luxury lodge in Darwin or working in a winery in the Barossa.

For more information on the working holiday visa program, you can also visit Tourism Australia’s dedicated portal.

For information on meeting the health requirement visit the Department of Home Affairs website .

See the department's list of office locations to find  information on panel physicians in your location that have been approved to perform medical examinations on visa applicants outside Australia.

Character requirements

Everyone who wants to enter Australia must be of good character and will be assessed against the character requirements. Applicants must declare all recorded offences to us. If you do not declare an offence and we become aware of this it might have a negative impact on your application.

For information on how character is assessed, visit the Department of Home Affairs website .

If requested, you must provide a police certificate from each country where you have lived for a total of 12 months or more in the last 10 years, since turning 16 years of age.

Applicants currently living in the United States may be requested to obtain both a State-wide police clearance from each State of residence in the USA during the last 12 months AND an FBI clearance in their current name and any other name they are known by or have previously been known by.

If applicable, you must also provide:

  • court papers listing the outcomes and dispositions of any charges listed on the FBI clearance, US State police clearance, or other police certificates/clearances
  • any document(s) associated with your arrest, time served and release documents
  • a written statement from you detailing each arrest/offence/conviction.

Obtaining an FBI clearance (US citizens and permanent residents)

US citizens and permanent residents can apply directly to the FBI or to one of four department approved channelers listed below to obtain an Identity History Summary Check.

Preparing for Your Visa Interview

The interview for your Australian visa is one of the most important and stressful parts of the entire interview process. You have to pass the interview in order to be granted a visa, so you should take the interview process seriously and prepare beforehand. These simple tips will help you prepare for your upcoming visa interview so you can be confident when that time comes.

Tell a Story

When you’re being interviewed for a visa, the interviewer isn’t looking for basic responses when they’re asking you questions about your character. While there will certainly be questions where you would only answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’, there are other opportunities to expand upon your answer. This is a great time to craft your answer so that it tells a story, rather than a short, direct answer.

Sharing personal information about yourself can help your interviewer connect with you and can reveal your character. Some questions are designed to specifically uncover the kind of person that you are, so be sure to put your best foot forward. We definitely do not advise making up information about yourself to try and relate to the interviewer, but there are ways to answer questions that are more interesting and informative.

tourist visa interview australia

For example, if you’re asked “Why are you looking to enter Australia?”, think of a better answer than simply saying “For school.” They already know what kind of visa you’re applying for, so take that as an opportunity to show who you are as a person.

Anticipate Questions

There is no way to know the exact questions you’re going to be asked in your interview until the interview starts. We recommend writing out as many potential questions as possible so that you can practice and rehearse your answers. Anticipating the questions beforehand will be an immense help when your interview arrives. Even if you haven’t practised the specific question you’re being asked, eventually you will practice enough questions that you’ll be able to craft answers that can fit multiple questions.

By understanding why you’re going through an interview, you can come up with relevant questions to practice. You are being interviewed to find out more about who you are and your character, your background, your intentions, and your supporting documentation.

Bring Supporting Documentation

It’s always a good idea to bring your supporting documentation with you to your interview. In fact, it may be required. Documentation includes bank statements, tax statements, school records, health records, and even family photos.

These documents will help prove your intentions for entering Australia and can also help portray who you are as a person. International security is something that the Australian government takes very seriously, so be sure to bring as much documentation as you can to avoid any delays in your visa application processing.

Practice Interview

Take the time to go through at least one or two practice interviews. Whether it’s with a friend or the team at Ausdirect Migration, practice interviews are one of the best ways to prepare for your interview. We have years of experience helping visa applicants go through the interview process, so we know what to expect for your visa interview. We can take as much time as you need to practice interview questions and responses. We will also help with your visa application process, from the initial enquiry to your first day in Australia. Our team will review your application, check your documentation, and practice interviews so you’re confident and prepared for your interview day.

Advance travel planning and early visa application are important. If you plan to apply for a nonimmigrant visa to come to the United States as a temporary visitor, please review the current wait time for an interview using the tool below. Not all visa applications can be completed on the day of the interview; please read the information below for more details .

Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Note: Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.

Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.

Select a U.S. Embassy or Consulate:

Global Visa Wait Times

Wait Time for Interview

The estimated wait time to receive a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate and is based on workload and staffing and can vary from week to week. The information provided is an estimate and does not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

Wait Time for Interview Waiver

Wait times for applicants eligible for Interview Waiver are applicable only for locations where applicants schedule appointments to submit their passport and any required documents to a U.S. embassy or consulate. The wait time estimate does not account for the time required for a consular officer to adjudicate the application nor mailing time of passports or other documents. Refer to the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will apply to determine your eligibility for Interview Waiver and for instructions for submitting a nonimmigrant visa application. Note that applicants must be a national or resident of the country where they are applying to be eligible to apply via Interview Waiver.

Qualifications for an Expedited Interview Appointment

Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. The process to request an expedited nonimmigrant visa interview varies by location. You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section  where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.

In all cases : You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.

Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.

These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.

There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Important Notice:   Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

About Visa Processing Wait Times – Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants

Information about nonimmigrant visa wait times for interviews and visa processing time frames are shown on this website, as well as on U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites worldwide. It should be noted that the “Wait Times for a Nonimmigrant Visa to be Processed” information by country does not include time required for administrative processing. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system.

In addition, it is important to thoroughly review all information on the specific  Embassy or Consulate Visa Section website  for local procedures and instructions, such as how to make an interview appointment. Embassy and Consulate websites will also explain any additional procedures for students, exchange visitors and those persons who need an earlier visa interview appointment.

About Wait Times

* Calendar days refers to every day of the week, including days when embassies are closed (such as weekends and holidays).

† Work days refers only to days when the embassy is open and does not include weekends and holidays.

‡ A, G, and NATO applications are excluded from these wait times, as they are processed separately.

The Australian government has rolled out a provision for international students by revising the part-time work hours cap from 40 to 48 hours per fortnight (applicable from July 1, 2023). If you plan to study in Australia, you can benefit from this and make your study abroad journey easy. It is critical to clear the GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) interview to get the Australian Student Visa 500. The GTE rule checks if the student's main purpose for coming to Australia is to truly study rather than work or move there permanently.

Table of Contents

6 sample questions related to the gte requirement with answers, 50 most asked interview questions for australia student visa, frequently asked questions, about australian student visa interview.

The interview involves a formal meeting between the applicant and an Australian government official. The applicant is asked several questions about their academic background, language proficiency, finances, and personal life. The representative will also look at the applicant's health, financial grounding, criminal history, etc., to see if they are a fit to study in Australia.

The candidate's English proficiency is examined to ensure the applicant can communicate effectively with others in an academic setting. The interviewer will evaluate how well the candidate speaks, writes, listens, and understands what they hear and read.

Thus, the GTE interview is crucial in the Australian student visa application process. It helps the government determine the authenticity and genuineness of the applicant's intentions to study temporarily in the country.

This blog post will review the most common interview questions and answers for an Australian student visa. It also discusses some specific questions that may be asked to determine the applicant's GTE status.

To answer this question, you can show your motivation to study in Australia and highlight how the country's education system and culture align with your career and personal goals. You can talk about Australia's excellent education system, well-equipped labs, research, and opportunities for international students.

Why did you choose the specific course and institution you have applied to?

To answer this question, you should clearly understand the course, its curriculum, and your chosen institution's strengths and unique features. Explain how the course aligns with your career goals and how the institution's resources and facilities will support your studies.

How will you finance your studies in Australia?

It is an important question, as the representative will want to ensure you have the financial means to support your studies in Australia. Be prepared to provide evidence of your financial situation, such as bank statements or a sponsorship letter.

Can you tell me about your previous education and work experience?

The Australia study visa interview questions and answers generally include this question to understand more about the applicant’s academic background and any relevant work experience. One can explain their previous studies, including the relevant subjects, grades, and overall performance. Also, provide information about relevant work experience and the skills gained during the professional journey.

The Department of Home Affairs conducts the GTE interview .  Remember, your student visa application can get rejected if it does not meet the GTE requirements.

Below are a few examples of the Australia GTE interview questions and answers that may be asked during an Australian student visa interview. Yes, Australians should purchase travel insurance for South Africa. While not a legal requirement to enter the country, it is highly recommended from the Australian government—especially for medical care.

The standard of medical facilities in South Africa can vary by region, but medical facilities are generally of a much lower standard than Australia. In fact, many regional hospitals only provide basic facilities, meaning you may have to be relocated in order to receive the right medical attention.

There is no shared healthcare agreement between Australia and South Africa, which makes travel insurance even more essential. If you need to be transferred by air evacuation to a major city in order to receive treatment, and you don’t have travel insurance, you’ll likely face a hefty bill out of your own pocket.

As Smartraveller advises all Australians, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

Vaccinations to Consider for Your Trip to South Africa

There is a high risk of certain diseases in South Africa, so it is worth making sure your vaccinations are up to date before you travel and taking any preventative measures with you, such as medications.

This can help reduce your chances of needing to seek medical attention.

There is a risk of Hepatitis A and B throughout South Africa, so vaccinations for Australian travellers are recommended. There is also a moderate risk for most travellers of typhoid, so a vaccination is also recommended if you are travelling to smaller cities, villages and rural areas.

Malaria is present throughout the country, so it could be a good idea to equip yourself with malaria tablets before you travel.

It is essential that you consult a medical practitioner regarding your need for vaccinations before you travel to South Africa, especially as some medical conditions can predispose travellers to certain infections.

When purchasing a travel insurance policy for South Africa, you will have the option to choose a basic policy or a comprehensive policy. A basic policy is cheaper , but may turn out to be more expensive in the long run if you aren’t covered for the things you need.

While a basic policy will usually cover medical needs, it may not provide cover for things such as lost luggage and cancellations (or, if it does, will provide it at a much lower claim level).

That’s why a comprehensive policy is highly recommended for travel to South Africa, as you will receive cover for stolen items, lost luggage, delays and more, in addition to medical and emergency dental care.

Smartraveller asks Australians to exercise a high degree of caution due to the threat of violent crime in South Africa, which includes robbery and carjacking.

The government website warns that opportunistic criminals will target travellers at the approaches to tourist-hotspot Kruger National Park, at well-known resorts, and on public transport.

Additionally, as ATM and credit card fraud are common crimes in South Africa, a comprehensive policy can be the more financially sound choice to give you peace of mind.

Going on a Safari?

South Africa is a popular tourist region for many reasons, including wildlife safaris. If you wish to partake in a safari or a game walk—walking with wild animals and a professional guide—you will need to ensure that these activities are covered in your policy’s list of included sports and activities.

If they are not, you will not receive cover for anything that occurs during the safari.

However, your policy may offer the option for you to choose an ‘adventure pack’ at an additional cost, which can include many activities that aren’t covered in the standard offering.

This can also include hiking or trekking to certain altitudes.

It’s important to consider which activities you may be participating in during your trip to South Africa in order to ensure you have the appropriate coverage, and purchase an additional add-on if necessary.

What Travel Insurance Won’t Cover

Your travel insurance policy won’t cover anything that is set out in its exclusions, as per the product disclosure statement (PDS). This could include certain sports and activities (such as a safari), or travel to certain regions in South Africa due to safety.

While each travel insurance policy differs on the fine-print, it is standard for most policies not to cover:

  • Cancellations due to ‘disinclination to travel’, being if you change your mind about your holiday;
  • Accidents or injuries that occur when not following the appropriate safety guidance or official guidelines;
  • Intoxicated behaviour, including recreational drugs;
  • Any illegal activity.

Be sure to carefully read the PDS of your policy so you know exactly what you can and cannot claim on your trip to South Africa.

Is it safe to travel to South Africa?

Smartraveller recommends that Australians exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to South Africa, due to the threat of violent crime. This includes armed robbery, mugging, carjacking, credit card theft, and more.

There is a higher risk of violent crime in major cities after dark, or during “rolling blackout” periods.

For these reasons (and more), Smartraveller urges Australians to take out a travel insurance policy before travelling to South Africa.

Do Australians need a visa for South Africa?

No, Australians do not need a visa for South Africa if they are visiting for tourism for stays of up to 90 days.

Where can I buy travel insurance for South Africa?

Most Australian travel insurance providers will cover Aussies wanting to head abroad to South Africa. When shopping around for a policy, you will be able to choose your destination when you request a quote. If there is no option to choose South Africa, this would be a clear indicator that the insurance provider does not provide policies to this region.

At the time of writing, a few of our top picks for comprehensive travel insurance cover South Africa, including Allianz and Cover-More .

Travel insurance providers can revoke the issuing of new policies to certain destinations at any time, especially if Smartraveller changes the alert warning for a country to ‘Do Not Travel’.
