Seemingly tucked away in the corner of the world, the British Isles nonetheless exert a world-wide influence that belies their small size. English literature buffs familiar with Shakespeare, Jane Austen, or the Romantic Poets will relish Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, the Lake District , and Bath, while amateur historians will enjoy visits to medieval castles, the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. In Scotland, experience the local culture – ‘neeps and tatties’, the Edinburgh military tattoo, and local whiskey ; while in Wales , enjoy our walking tour of its unjustly neglected coastline.

Across the St George’s Channel (Irish sea), our visits to Dublin take in Ireland’s tangible historical remnants – the Book of Kells, O’Connell Street, and St Patrick’s Cathedral – in order to understand its turbulent history. We also offer a trip off the beaten path to see Northern Ireland, including the Giant’s Causeway. And wherever we are, our itinerary always takes time to journey into the British Isles spectacular scenery: England’s Cotswold and quaint villages; Snowdonia National Park in Wales ; the Scottish highlands and Loch Lomond; and Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher and Killarney National Park (on the Ring of Kerry). For those mature and senior travellers seeking a small group tour of the British isles and small group tours of Ireland and Scotland 2020 – 2021 we offer over 100 departures from our small group tour of the British isles collection each year.

Odyssey’s tours to Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales are all an escorted tour with a tour manager often accompanied by a knowledgeable local tour guide. Whether your are on a Ireland tour for the first time or a Scotland tour heading for the Scottish highlands, our tour director will have the itinerary for your sightseeing tour planned out. If you are on walking tours of England Scotland and Ireland, then on this walking holiday your tour manager will have the coach ready for ready for the hike into the countryside, over rolling hills, pausing in quaint villages for lunch. We enjoy preparing for each tour to ensure whatever small group tour or walking holiday you choose that we have prepared for your trip.

When is the best time to go on your UK trip?

The best time to visit the United Kingdom is in spring (late March to early June) and autumn (September to November), when it’s usually warm and dry. You’ll see beautiful spring flowers or the leaves changing hue in autumn, and avoid the much busier summer period.

Why choose a small group tour?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and no more than 18 travellers. Odyssey has been offering this style of adventure and educational programs, since 1983.

We offer a wide range of educational, cultural and heritage journeys that expand horizons and broaden the mind. Our tours are designed for active, inquisitive travellers in a small group environment.

What's the accommodation like on a group tour?

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

Whether travelling solo, in a couple, or with friends, Odyssey Traveller caters primarily for travellers over 50, over 60, over 70 or 80 years of age. Therefore, your travelling companions are sure to share your interests. They will want similar experiences in an environment of mutual understanding. We design all programs with the mature traveller in mind. Travelling solo does not mean travelling alone, so when there’s free time to explore you’re sure to have another solo traveler or couple ready to join you if you wish. Single travelers make about a third of our groups and many a repeat travelers!

How big are the group sizes on your tours?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and averages at 12 participants per tour, a mix of singles and couples.

First solo trip with Odyssey?

Odyssey offers a collection of genuine small group tour(s) Odyssey tours are priced to reflect that these are small group tours. Typically this means you are part of a small group of 6 to 12 people, not part of a group of 18 or more. Small group means you and fellow traveller enjoying an evening meal around one dinner table. So, we do not achieve the economies of scale of 18 plus on a coach that a larger tour operator would offer, because this is not the type of trip or touring experience our clients seek from us.

Odyssey tours are genuinely based around;

  • A Small group tour of less than 18 people for the mature traveller as holidays for a couple and holidays for solo travellers over 50.
  • Knowledgeable local expert guides and a great tour leader who has an interest in the theme of the tour.
  • Inclusive pricing, including all entrances, tipping and the majority of meals included. That means, no hidden extras with respect to cost. Transparent pricing of the single supplement for the single traveller.
  • A learning based escorted tour with a like minded fellow traveller.
  • Accommodation in 3 & 4 star hotels and self catering apartments.
  • A blend of group learning, touring activities and free time to explore a place further, whether on a discovery or walking holiday program.
  • No name badges or flags to follow when out and about.
  • Travel to places that extend your learning and curiosity, often where others will not follow.
  • Spending typically between 60 to 85% of the operating cost of the tour in the country visited, benefiting the local communities directly.

Do you have any other holidays that aren't with a group?

Odyssey welcome enquiries for private groups, at a minimum of 6 participants.

What is a small group tour?

Tours typically span between two to three weeks in duration. An Odyssey small group tour seeks to stay typically 2 to 3 nights in each location in good 3 or 4 star hotels. These are an escorted tour that have evolved to be a good blend of touring and seeing. As well as opportunities to spend time in key places to take a half or full day break from the group enabling you should you with to be a solo traveller for a few hours or explore with a travelling companion a particular place or take time out for a break, before we travel on to our next destination. For the solo traveller , Odyssey has a expansive range of holidays for solo travellers over 50 to choose from, though we do not offer a regular river cruise or a dedicated solos holiday or solo travel tours.

For the solo traveller there is a single supplement charged on all of Odyssey Travellers small group tour programs. The single supplement reflects the cost of single occupancy of a hotel room with a double bed in your own room (generally, no single bedded rooms are offered across Europe) or a single cabin on a cruise . There are no additional charges made any client booking holidays for solo travellers over 50 years of age, just the single supplement , we like to keep a level of transparency in the prices charged.

Which countries do small group tours go to?

Odyssey Traveller offers tours all over the world. We have a range of tours across Europe , The British Isles , Asia , Africa , The Middle East , and The Americas . We can take you to see the Northern Lights in the outermost regions of Norway. You can travel with us to the jungles of Madagascar to experience its magnificent landscape and wildlife or see the ruins of Machu Picchu in South America . It was like heritage walk of the Major medieval Cities of England Scotland and Ireland. Many of Its Castles Like Windsor ,Alnwick and Ross Castle of Killarney Ireland and Palaces Looked almost surrealistic and we felt as if we have taken back in Time to the medieval Ages. The Tour Guides were thorough professional even though they had to shuffle between English and spanish in their Narrative they did a wonderful job.

Britain and Ireland Explorer (16 Days) Tour

Britain and Ireland Explorer (16 Days)

This tour was absolutely amazing. So much to see, and never enough time. But everything that I saw and everywhere I went was necessary. There was no waste of time events or towns visited. The tour guide was also just the best. Rob really went above and beyond to help people out, to explain the itinerary each day, his recommendations and ideas were super helpful. He seemed super passionate about the history and culture of the countries we visited too. The hotels were for the most part good standard. One or two I wouldn't stay at again, but they really are just a place to sleep and store your luggage while you're exploring. It's long days on the coach but the scenery well makes up for it. Nothing felt rushed, except when the trip was widening up and the days just flew by. But that's personal perception I highly recommend this tour, especially if you get Rob and Tom

Everything about the trip was good, including the weather, and Greg even influenced that, playing the Beatles "Here comes the sun" to start every morning. Full breakfast was good fuel for the day. Greg was enthusiastic, knowledgable, amusing, and patient with tardy guests. The coach drivers (Liam and Tommy) were superb. The porterage was a very nice touch.

We felt there was too many places and not enough time Plymouth was a waste of time and Cardiff.we didnt see any thing of Fort William or Inverness and as for Hadrians wall what a joke !! Group photos at Anne Hathaway cottage but no time to see cottage or gardens .then dropped off at shakespeares birthplace for shops !! Long way to Culloden not to have time to go into the museum. Too many hours at Blarney on a wet day in the woolen mill. But apart from that Rosemary was fantastic Julian great driver took a while to warm... enjoyed our holiday but not one of our better cosmos experiences.

Overall, the tour was excellent. I would have liked to have visited Belfast before going to Scotland. Kelli, our Tour Director was outstanding. She was better than all of the tour directors put together from Julia Travel on my last trip. The 2 drivers for Insight were great. How they get the bus where they do is amazing. I would definitely recommend this tour and crew.

What people love about UK And Great Britain Tours

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
As the one year anniversary approaches, I wish I could do this trip again!
I really enjoyed the trip

DAY 1 - Overnight flight to Great Britain.

The Trip Documents will provide guidance for airport check-in and for arrival in the British Isles. Relax on your transatlantic flight with the assurance that Image Tours has taken care of all the details.

DAY 2 - ENGLAND . . Arrival at London Airport - Oxford - Warwickshire.

Upon arrival, clear passport control and collect your luggage. Refer to the "Arrival Instructions" in the Trip Documents for directions on where and when to meet your tour manager. During the motor coach transfer to your hotel in Warwickshire, make a brief stop in Oxford where Henry II established the first university of Britain in 1167. Tonight, at your hotel, get acquainted with your fellow travelers during the "Welcome Dinner." (Dinner)

DAY 3 - ENGLAND . . Stow-on-the-Wold - Stratford-Upon-Avon - Warwickshire.

Views of the unspoiled countryside known as the Cotswolds clearly confirm you have arrived in England. Gentle hillsides, peaceful meadows, and charming villages with old stone buildings characterize this region. The first destination today is Stow-on-the-Wold, offering antique shops and an opportunity to take a souvenir photo with your hands in the village's authentic stocks. Then it's on to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where half-timbered houses with thatched roofs create a truly English setting. The introductory tour includes a picture stop in front of Anne Hathaway's Cottage and entrance to the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Enjoy some free time in Stratford-Upon-Avon or join the optional Warwick Castle excursion (see Optional Excursions) showcasing 1,000 years of history. Return to your Warwickshire hotel for dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 4 - ENGLAND . . York - County Durham.

Drive north via the Nottingham area. Around lunch time, arrive in the historic city of York and spend the afternoon exploring the sights that interest you. "The Shambles" is one of the most picturesque streets in Britain with unique shops, cafés and restaurants. York also boasts the most complete example of medieval city walls still standing in England today. Walk along them for exceptional views. Be sure to take a look inside York Minster Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in England. In the late afternoon, travel through North Yorkshire to County Durham for hotel check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 5 - ENGLAND . . Hadrian's Wall & SCOTLAND . . Jedburgh - Edinburgh.

Shortly after crossing the border into Scotland, reach Jedburgh where you will be treated to an English Tea with cakes and finger sandwiches. Following tea, use your free time in Jedburgh to tour the Mary Queen of Scots House, see Jedburgh Abbey, or do some shopping at the Woollen Mill. A late afternoon arrival at your Edinburgh hotel provides time to freshen up and relax. Dinner is independent, or join the optional Scottish Dinner excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast, English Tea)

DAY 6 - SCOTLAND . . Edinburgh.

Start the day with a guided tour of Edinburgh. Afterward, a good place to spend your free time is along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's Old Town. As you walk past the classic old houses, you may wish to visit one of the unique attractions such as the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh Castle, Writer's Museum, Gladstone's Land (the oldest standing house in Edinburgh), Museum of Childhood, or the high-tech Our Dynamic Earth Museum. Edinburgh offers a variety of options for tonight's independent dinner. [ During the first two weeks of August, Image Tours includes attendance to the world famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a spectacular show by military bands, performed outside the castle ]. (Breakfast)

DAY 7 - SCOTLAND . . Gretna Green & ENGLAND . . Liverpool.

The morning stop will be at the Old Blacksmith’s Shop in the border town of Gretna Green, which became well known for “run-away weddings” officiated by the blacksmith. Starting in 1754, English couples would cross the border to be married under the liberal terms of the Scottish laws. Continuing south from Gretna Green, travel back into England and on to Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles. A 4:00 p.m. arrival at your Liverpool hotel provides time to explore and shop. Your tour manager will offer an optional Magical Mystery Tour excursion (see Optional Excursions) highlighting landmarks made famous by the Beatles. Dinner is independent tonight so that you may choose to dine at the hotel or at one of the pubs, restaurants or live music venues along Mathew Street. Here you will find the replicated Cavern Club, where the Beatles regularly played during their early years. (Breakfast)

DAY 8 - WALES . . Snowdonia - Caernarfon - Ferry from Holyhead & IRELAND . . Dublin.

This day is devoted to the sweeping landscape of Northern Wales. After a morning stop in Betws-y-Coed, continue through the thick pine forest into Snowdonia National Park, a mountainous region with rough but beautiful terrain. At Caernarfon, admire one of the castles built by King Edward I. A quick independent lunch will allow time to climb the castle's tower (approximately £11 admission fee). After the motor coach crosses the Menai Bridge onto the Isle of Anglesey, pause to take a picture of the town with the longest name, which we abbreviate here as Llanfair P.G. For your independent dinner, you have the choice of dining while you ferry from Wales to the Republic of Ireland or at a pub upon arrival in Dublin. (Breakfast)

DAY 9 - IRELAND . . Dublin.

The capital city of the Republic of Ireland offers much to keep you busy and entertained. A local guide joins you this morning to provide insight into the city's history and to point out the popular landmarks including Dublin Castle, Trinity College and the Guinness Brewery. Entrance into St. Patrick's Cathedral is included. Following the city tour, the afternoon is free for individual pursuits. The area west of Dublin has become known as the center of the Irish horse breeding and training industry. After touring the Kildare National Stud Farm, visit the Japanese Gardens of Tully House. As you continue toward western Ireland, relax and enjoy the scenes of meadows, glens and crystal clear rivers. One of the friendly country villages along the way will provide a pleasant spot for an independent lunch. Bakeries will offer you tea sandwiches, and family-owned pubs will serve up hearty Irish dishes. Then it's on to your County Kerry hotel, hosting you for dinner this evening and a two-night stay. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Travel to the Iveragh Peninsula, also known as "The Ring of Kerry," for a day of spectacular coastal landscapes. An included visit to the Roman Baths Museum reveals the advanced engineering developed by the Romans. Then, it is on to mysterious Stonehenge. Dating back to about 1500 B.C., one can only speculate how the stones reached the site and how they were moved into place - some  weighing 45 tons! This day is devoted to the sweeping landscape of Northern Wales.  After a morning stop in Betws-y-Coed, continue through the thick pine forest into Snowdonia National Park: a mountainous region with rough but beautiful terrain.  At Caernarfon, admire one of the castles built by King Edward I.  A quick independent lunch will allow time to climb the castle’s tower (admission fee).  After the motor coach crosses the Menai Bridge onto the Isle of Anglesey, pause to take a picture of the town with the longest name(58 letters), which we abbreviate here as Llanfair P.G.  For your independent dinner, you have the choice of dining while you ferry from Wales to the Republic of Ireland or at a pub upon arrival in Dublin.  (Breakfast)

The capital city of the Republic of Ireland offers much to keep you busy and entertained. A local guide joins you this morning to provide insight into the city’s history and to point out the popular landmarks including Dublin Castle, Trinity College and the Guinness Brewery. Entrance into St. Patrick’s Cathedral is included. Following the city tour, the after noon is free for individual pursuits. A popular attraction is the “Book of Kells Experience” at the Trinity College Library (admission fee). Here you will view the Book of Kells, an ornately decorated and meticulously scribed edition of the Gospels from 800 A.D. Equally popular is a tour of the Guinness Brewery (admission fee). Tonight’s dinner is independent, or join the optional Irish Dinner Show excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast)

The area west of Dublin has become known as the center of the Irish horse breeding and training industry. Tour the Kildare National Stud Farm, followed by a visit to the Japanese Gardens of Tully House. Then it’s on to your County Kerry hotel, hosting you for dinner this evening and a two-night stay. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Travel to the Iveragh Peninsula, also known as “The Ring of Kerry,” for a day of spectacular coastal landscapes.  Along the way, make several photo stops.  A lunch at one of the seaside villages is included.  At one of the farms en route from the coast to Killarney, observe a sheep herding demonstration.  For tonight’s independent dinner, Killarney offers everything from excellent restaurants to friendly local pubs.  After dinner, return to your County Kerry hotel.  (Breakfast, Lunch)

The morning visit to Blarney Castle is sure to be a tour highlight.  Capture enchanting photos and impressive views as you walk the grounds and study this 17th century fortification with walls that are 18 feet thick at the base.  Learn of the magical tales associated with the castle, the most famous involving the Blarney Stone.  Enjoy an independent lunch at one of the charming restaurants in the village of Blarney.  An early afternoon arrival in Waterford allows for time to explore the town on foot or to participate in the optional Waterford Crystal Experience excursion (see Optional Excursions).  Dinner is included at your hotel.  (Breakfast, Dinner)

An early morning departure is necessary to reach the ferry in Rosslare for your crossing from Ireland to Wales.  You will have time for an independent lunch while on the ferry. Arriving in Wales, view the scenery along the coastal road between Pembrokeshire National Park and the Wye Valley.  By mid-afternoon, arrive in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Take a stroll through the 56-acre Bute Park, relax over afternoon tea at a café or participate in the optional Cardiff  Castle excursion (see Optional Excursions). Continue to your hotel for check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Crossing the mouth of the River Severn, return to England for a tour of Bath: the elegant spa town where the Romans harnessed the natural hot springs 2,000 years ago.  An included visit to the Roman Baths Museum reveals the advanced engineering developed by the Romans.  Then, it is on to mysterious Stonehenge.  Dating back to about 1500 B.C., one can only speculate how the stones reached the site and how they were moved into place — some weighing 45 tons!  Upon arrival in London, check in and enjoy a relaxing “Farewell Dinner” at the hotel.  Tomorrow, the entire day will be devoted to sightseeing in the British capital.  (Breakfast, Dinner)

Today begins with a guided bus tour of London’s famous landmarks such as the Royal Parks, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Trafalgar Square.  Following the city tour, you will have a few hours to pursue your personal interests.  If you have a specific destination in mind, the Tube system (Underground) is easy, fast and economical.  Your tour manager will also provide suggestions for some of the most popular attractions.  Spend lunch time amid the bustling shops and street performers of Covent Garden.  Or, study works of art by da Vinci, van Gogh, Rembrandt, Michelangelo and Picasso at The National Gallery.  Located on the banks of the River Thames, the London Eye Ferris wheel provides unique views of the city.  In the evening, London offers numerous options for independent dining and entertainment.  Or, join your tour manager for the optional London Dinner & Theatre excursion (see Optional Excursions).  (Breakfast)

  •   Tour Stratford-Upon-Avon and visit Shakespeare’s birthplace

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter the United Kingdom; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of the United Kingdom to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

There is a smoking ban in public places throughout Scotland. The Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa is a non-smoking property, with no 'smoking' rooms available.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to the United Kingdom. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of the United Kingdom to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

England, Scotland & Wales involves a considerable amount of walking. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. The castle visits at Edinburgh, Stirling and Caernarfon and the visit to Levens Hall & Gardens are challenging for those with difficulty walking as they have steep steps, cobblestone walkways and hillside gardens. Some walks can be extensive on flat terrain in places such as Stratford-upon-Avon.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate of the United Kingdom is notoriously variable and changeable from day to day. Weather is generally cool to mild with frequent cloud cover and rain, but occasional settled spells of weather occur in all seasons. As a general rule, the western side of the United Kingdom is cloudier, wetter, and milder in winter, with cooler summers than the eastern side. The eastern side of the United Kingdom is drier the year round, with a tendency for summer rain to be heavier than that of winter. You will rarely experience severe or unpleasant weather for long; however, you should be prepared for rapid changes of weather in all seasons. There is good reason for weather being a major talking point in the United Kingdom!

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather in the United Kingdom is moderate but unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket and tie for men are acceptable dining attire, although not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to The United Kingdom:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

With its tradition for contemporary arts and culture. The ancient history reaches out from the Roman baths sitting atop the city’s bubbling hot springs.

Dublin – Transfer to Ireland by Ferry

Your family will wake early to catch the ferry that shepherds you from England across the Irish Sea to reach Waterford, home of the Waterford Crystal factory and headquarters. You can stop to admire the sophisticated beauty of the famous crystal-works before you reach the charming city of Kilkenny. Medieval Mile contains a network of narrow lanes strung with historic structures connecting the stunning cathedral on the banks of the River Norse to the dramatic castle. Kilkenny Castle was erected in the 12th century as a stronghold for an Anglo-Norman conqueror and eventually turned over to the powerful Butler family.

The 17th-century walls remain standing and reach nearly 30 feet thick. Your kids will marvel at the natural wonders of the Giant’s Causeway that renews their belief in the fantastical through the fascinating mixture of hexagonal stone columns and splashing waves. The atmospheric landscape hosts 40,000 interlocking basalt columns that reach up to 39 feet tall. Legend states Finn MacCool disguised himself as a baby to hide from his foe.

Glasgow – Travel to Scotland for a Walking Tour

The capital city of Scotland will offer you a new perspective of the Old-World ambiance as it combines earthiness with sophistication. After your family ferries across Ireland to Scotland, your guide will escort you on a private walking tour of the city. Georgian architecture creates lavish street designs and museums highlight Victorian charms. Glasgow Cathedral represents the grandeur of history, which dates back to the 12th century. The Victorian city center hosts colorful flowers. The aroma of coffee and pastries drifts down the street from Merchant City district, a popular neighborhood with celebrated designer boutiques and ubiquitous cafes.

Edinburgh – Enjoy Medieval Stories in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a city of history, elegance, and mythology crowned by the stunning stronghold that hovers above the streets on Castle Hill. You will travel to Edinburgh in the morning with plenty of time to settle into the comforts of your accommodations before your family begins their guided exploration. New Town’s Georgian architecture dates back to the 18th century with rows of stately terraces, while Old Town's narrow lanes and steep staircases shine a light on the medieval history connecting the Royal Mile. The road at the heart of the city connects Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Edinburgh – Uncover Majestic Scenery

The morning sunlight washes over the 13th-century façade of St. Giles Cathedral. Your kids’ faces will fill with excitement when you board the train and find that the comforts of elegant seats and wide windows provide views to the Rannoch Moor wilderness as you pass over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

At breakfast, the aroma of black tea will fill the dining room. Your kids share their favorite moments of the trip, which range from the Jacobite Steam Train to the armory in London Tower. Why Cruise the British Isles

The British pubs, Parisian artwork and Irish castles invite you to live like royalty.

Storied and splendid

Castles are the emblem of these regions. Between the chandeliers and tapestries, step into luxury when you visit the British Isles. Cruise to Dublin and parade through the 13th-century halls of the city’s fortress. Experience the grandeur of Urquhart Castle, and search for legendary ghosts in Glamis Castle. Or visit Edinburgh Castle, where kings, queens and nobles once lived and medieval secrets continue to linger.

Melodies of memories past

As the birthplace of many music icons, the British Isles invite you to sing, dance and raise a glass to songs played around the globe. Visit Liverpool to walk in the footsteps of a beloved boyband, and head to a local pub to hear the boys at their best. Cruise the British Isles for an evening of Irish song and dance in Dublin, or watch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo assemble bands, bagpipes and drums for a soul-stirring show.

Globally recognized, historically prominent

Raise a glass to adventure

In lands famous for their stouts and ales, pubs are the cornerstone of tradition. Cruise the British Isles and step into age-old establishments that are bustling with spirit. In Dublin, get a taste of true pub “craic” — an Irish term that equates to an atmosphere of fun, entertainment and good company. With festive music playing in the background, sip on world-famous beers that originated nearby while sharing a laugh with locals.

Natural Phenomena

Unexplainable yet undeniable

Discern fact versus fiction on a British Isles cruise, where mysteries and mythologies abound. In Portland, learn about the 5,000-year-old stone circle that displays an advanced understanding of arithmetic and astrology. On itineraries that sail to Cork, search the sea for the Bioluminescence beams created by the region’s gleaming plankton. Or hunt for Invergordon’s legendary monster in the waters of Loch Ness.

Museums & Art Galleries

Ancient artifacts and acclaimed artwork

No cruise to the British Isles is complete without a visit to Paris. See “Venus de Milo” and da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” or tour Notre Dame, a work of art in and of itself. Visit the Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin, where interactive galleries invite you to explore. Those departing from London can also stop by the Victoria and Albert Museum which houses over two million artifacts.

British Isles excursions

Our award-winning shore excursions bring you up close to beautiful coasts, monuments and historical wonderlands. WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO British-Isles Cruises Insider

Because of its island climate, the British Isles don't get quite as warm in the summer or quite as cold in the winter as elsewhere in Europe. People love to visit in the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, when the weather is usually warm and dry.

Of course, British weather is known to be temperamental, and rain is frequent. Pack layers even if you're visiting in summer, as the evenings can get cool, and bring a waterproof jacket and outerwear regardless of the season.

You can find longer 12 night sailings around the British Isles from Amsterdam, Netherlands and shorter sampling sailings out of Southampton, England .

Tipping is not customary across the British Isles like it is elsewhere in Europe and in North America. Some restaurants do add a service charge to bills.

If driving in the British Isles, remember Ireland road signs are in kilometers, while Great Britain uses miles instead.

FOR FOODIE'S A CUISINE OF COMFORT

Each country in the British Isles is known for its signature pub grub and comfort food dishes. These hearty and predominantly meaty meals keep locals warm in a region known for its bracing weather.

Traditional Irish Stew for St. Patricks day

Stir the Pot

Made from slow-cooked meat — typically lamb or beef — and root vegetables such as potatoes, onions and carrots, a bowl of Irish stew with a side of crusty bread is only made better when washed down with a pint of Guinness.

Cote de Boeuf with Yorkshire Pudding

The Proof's in the Pudding

Typically served on Sundays, a traditional British roast usually includes roast beef, roast potatoes, a side of vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, a baked pudding often served with gravy. Head to a London pub to tuck into this English tradition.

British Fish and Chips

The O.G. Fish and Chips

Across the British Isles, you'll find thousands of restaurants and shops exclusively serving fish and chips, which first appeared in England in the 1860s. Flaky, tender white fish is deep-fried in a thin, crunchy layer of batter and served alongside thick-cut fried potatoes and "mushy" peas, as the locals call them, which are blended with cream or occasionally ultra-rich bone marrow.

Reviews of this Operator

We have just returned from a cosmos….

We have just returned from a Cosmos tour- Gourmet Tuscany. We stayed in Montecatini Terme and traveled from there to many wonderful places, in towns and the fabulous Tuscan countryside. We visit Vineyards for wine tastings, farms for cooking lessons and lunches and dinners in authentic Italian restaurants. All assisted by a friendly, informative tour director. First class holiday

Excellent in every respect

I recently did a 2-week "best of Italy" tour with this company. Our guide, Daniella, was fantastic, the itinerary was excellent and they catered for my rather difficult dietary requirements really well. Really happy and will certainly book with them again

A wonderrful experience

WE saw so much. The tour director Mladin was very knowledgeable and made the experience so enjoyable. The bus driver Paul was so nice and helpful. A couple of the hotels had no refrigerators to keep the water cold. We had to carry our own luggage to and from the rooms. There should have been porters to help us. Over all we had a great time.

Old South &Florida tour

Great organisation, tour guide(Kris) and driver(Tony) who went extra mile and good group of people from all over world. The hotels were excellent in New Orleans and Nashville and very good in other cities. The itinerary was well thought out with visits to Gracelands and Grande ole Oprey topping the bill. We added 3extra nights in New Orleans (giving us 6nights) which was absolutely fab and would advise anyone doing this tour that they consider some extra nights to see and do as much as you can

The tour director expertise and…

The tour director expertise and personality made the trip all the more pleasant. No stress. The local guides as well added to the beauty of this trip. They were knowledgeable and personable. I also have to mention the travelers (the group of 21). The people were friendly an accommodating. This is my third trip with this tour company and I will continue to travel with this company due to excellent planning and customer service. Thank you

tours to british isles

These Are 10 Of The Best British Islands To Visit

  • The Isle of Sark in the Channel Islands is among the best British Isles to visit; it's a car-free paradise with horse and carriage rides and bike rentals as transportation options. Activities include horse-carriage tours and cycling.
  • The Isle of Man, located in the Irish Sea, is known for its green rolling hills and Viking ruins at Peel Castle. Activities include hiking, visiting ruins, and shopping in Douglas.
  • The Mainland, Orkney Islands, offers well-preserved Neolithic ruins and ancient monuments. Activities include hiking and exploring Stone Age and Iron Age ruins.

The British Isles are an archipelago with a number of small islands around the two main islands (Ireland and Great Britain). Some of these isles are steeped in history and charm. This article will include the islands associated with the United Kingdom (including the Channel Islands - some of Britain's forgotten gems ).

The British islands have many excellent islands to visit - e.g., the Gaelic-speaking Outer Hebrides of Scotland are not on the list, but they are also worth visiting. Here are some of the most stunning British Isles worth visiting, a few of which are home to some of Britain's best UNESCO Sites .

Isle Of Sark (Guernsey & Crown Dependency)

The Isle of Sark is a royal fief and part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey - one of the Channel Island Crown Dependencies. The little isle is home to around 500 people and is known as the jewel of the Channel Islands.

Sark is one of the few places on earth where cars are forbidden from the island - to get around, hire a bike, or enjoy an old-time horse and carriage ride around the island.

  • Activities: Horse-Carriage Tours, Cycling

Isle Of Man (Crown Dependency)

The Isle of Man is another Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom (basically an independent country). It is located in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland and is one of the larger islands surrounding Great Britain.

Take the ferry from the English city of Lancaster to the Isle of Man and see charming green rolling hills and the impressive Viking ruins at the castle at Peel.

  • Activities: Hiking, Visit Ruins, Shopping in Douglas

Mainland, Orkney Islands (Scotland)

Mainland is the largest of the Orkney Islands, just to the north of mainland Scotland. It is famous for its impressive Neolithic ruins - some of the best preserved ruins in Great Britain of this kind.

See the Knap of Howar (the oldest standing house in Northern Europe), henges, and other ancient monuments.

  • Activities: Hiking, Exploring Stone Age & Iron Age Ruins

Isle Of Wight (England)

The Isle of Wight is the largest and most famous of the islands of England . Today, it is famous for its charming setting, its Victorian architecture, and its spectacular coastlines.

The Isle of Wight has been a noted English vacation destination since at least Victorian times.

  • Activities: Explore Coastlines & Victorian Architecture

Isle Of Skye (Scotland)

The Isle of Skye is likely the most famous and most visited of the islands of Scotland. The Isle of Skye is noted for its outstanding natural beauty and its excellent distilleries.

Go on a Whiskey-tasting tour in the Isle of Skye while exploring some of the most dramatic landscapes in Scotland.

  • Activities: Hiking, Distillery Tours

Related: Is The Beautiful & Distant Isle Of Skye Actually Worth Visiting?

The Shetland Islands (Scotland)

The Shetland Islands are an even more remote Scottish island archipelago. They are green, windswept islands buffeted by the North Sea.

Discover the rich Viking heritage of these islands and plan to visit during the Up Helly Aa Festival, when the islands celebrate their Viking past .

  • Activities: Hiking, Up Helly Aa Festival

Isle Of Anglesey (Wales)

The Isle of Anglesey is the largest island in Wales and is located just off the northwestern coast of Wales. The island has a large percentage of Welsh speakers (57%) and is considered a stronghold of the Celtic language.

The island has attractions from the UNESCO-listed Beaumaris Castle to the longest name in Europe - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllllantysiliogogoch.

  • Activities: Explore Medieval Ruins, Hiking

Lundy Island (England)

Lundy is a stunning English island owned by the National Trust . It is a noted English destination for its wildlife (e.g., seabirds and seals) and for the quaint structures on the island.

The little island only has a population of around 28, and most buildings on the island offer some sort of accommodation.

  • Activities: Wildlife Viewing, Walking

Related: Why England's Lundy Island Is Famous & Why This Lonely Forgotten Isle Is Also Worth Visiting

Jersey (Crown Dependency)

Jersey is one of the two Crown Dependencies that make up the Channel Islands. It is the largest of the Channel Islands and is a remnant of the medieval Duchy of Normandy.

Today, it is a great destination to explore island life in the English Channel and see an overlooked part of Europe.

  • Activities: Medieval Ruins, Walking

St Kilda (Scotland)

St Kilda is more than a ghost town; it is a ghost island. It is a remote (and dramatic) island of Scotland now home to the largest colony of Atlantic puffins. Visitors need to take a boat (there are boat tours available) to the island.

Explore the many ruins on the islands and see its blossoming seabird colonies. St Kilda is part of the Outer Herbrides of Scotland and had been inhabited for hundreds of years until it was abandoned in 1930.

Tour de Romandie 2024 stages

The race starts with a very short 2.3km prologue which will be contested by the overall favorites, keen to install a pecking order early on, and the short TT specialists looking for a chance to gain a leaders jersey in a big stage race.

Stage one follows the next day and it’s a lumpy 165.7km from Château d’Oex to Fribourg which will likely end in a sprint finish, although there are very view big name sprinters on the start sheet.

Stage two is where the GC action will really kick off with two huge mountains and a summit finish at Salvan/Les Marécottes. This 10km final ascent, averaging 7.3%, has slopes maxing out at 14% so will be a proper test for the climbers.

Those same climbers will the next day have to take on the 15.5km continuously undulating time trial around Oron and utilise another skill needed to win a stage race.

Stage four from Saillon to Leysin is 151.7km and takes the riders into higher territory with five classified climbs including the 10km summit finish at the end.

After this the GC battle should be stitched up with just the laps around Vernier to contend with on the final stage which will likely end in a sprint.
