Halifax (otherwise known as the ‘Halifax Regional Municipality’) is the capital of Nova Scotia in Canada. Halifax has a population of around 410,000 people, most of which are based in the urban area of Halifax Harbour. The Halifax Regional Municipality consists of the former locations of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and the Municipality of Halifax County. This merge was completed in 1996. Halifax is a strong economic power and deals with business from across the globe, handling agriculture, mining, forestry and gas sectors for government services and private sector companies. It has been ranked the fourth best place to live in Canada. There is a high level of public schools located in Halifax, around 140 and are administered by the Halifax Regional School Board mostly, but a few by the Counseil scolaire acadien provincial. There are also six private schools which operate independently. There are a number of universities including Dalhousie University, Saint Mary’s University and the Atlantic School of Theology. Because of the number of universities and colleges, and their highness in quality, Halifax is seen a hub of youth culture.

Canada: EduNova launches new agent training

A Nova Scotian education association is offering training for overseas recruitment agents to help them support international students to study in the region.

travel agent course nova scotia

The agent training program is one of five projects that EduNova is introducing this year

EduNova , a co-operative association of education providers in the Canadian province, says it has launched its training program to ensure that agents are “equipped to provide high-quality seamless support to prospective international students”.

The Canadian Bureau for International Education will deliver the training online and the course will cover the Canadian education system, the post-secondary options available in Nova Scotia, and the immigration pathways available to overseas students.

The free training is specifically targeted at agents working with Nova Scotia’s post-secondary institutions, with the aim of decreasing study permit rejection rates and increasing the number of international students studying in Nova Scotia.

An estimated 40% of study permit applications to Canada were rejected in 2021.

In the first year of the program, 30 agents will be nominated by EduNova members and vetted by the organisation.

Upon completion of the course, they will receive a certification from CBIE and attend a graduation ceremony in Nova Scotia.

Shawna Garrett, president and CEO of EduNova, told The PIE News that the program will support agents to be “better equipped to select successful candidates for study in Nova Scotia” and allow them to “acquire a thorough understanding of the various factors that impact the decision-making process of a study permit application”.

“International education is crucial to our future here in Nova Scotia”

The agent training program is one of five projects that EduNova is introducing in 2022/23 to support international students’ experiences in Nova Scotia.

Last month, EduNova announced that it will launch a new digital platform for foreign students to help them make “informed decisions” about studying in the region.

“International education is crucial to our future here in Nova Scotia and across Atlantic Canada,” said Robert Summerby-Murray, president & vice-chancellor of Saint Mary’s University.

“These investments in high-quality recruitment, professional development for key staff, and in support of pathways to immigration and employment will ensure that Nova Scotia looks ahead with confidence and expertise toward our global future.”

Nearly 18% of all university students in Nova Scotia come from countries other than Canada annually, according to EduNova .

“Learn About our New Agent Program”

“New Agent Testimonial”

Questions You Should Know The Answers To…

Prior to creating our New Agent Learning Program we did our homework. From our research, we found there are many differences in what host agencies offer. Here are some key questions you will want to ask when talking to us and to any other host agency.

  • Is marketing included in your fees or is it an extra fee?
  • Do they do the marketing for you and from you or do they create the material and you have to do it?
  • Direct Mail (Canada Post)
  • Targeted E-Marketing
  • E-Newsletters

Referral Program:

  • Do they offer a referral program that compensates friends and family that refer new clients to you?
  • Do they have a referral program that compensates friends or colleagues that refer new customers to you?
  • What is the length of the contract you will be asked to sign? Buyer beware! Some contracts are for 5 year terms and even after 5 years the contract says you are not able to work in the travel industry for 1 more year.
  • Are there many additional fees for marketing, websites, telephone that you should know before making your decision?

Personal Website:

  • Do they offer a personalized bookable website in their fees?
  • Does their website have booking engines that include Hotel, Car, Cruise, Packages, Insurance & Excursions?
  • Are you responsible for updating the content on your site or is it done for you?
  • How is the training delivered? Is it live (via webinar), prerecorded or classroom?
  • What materials will you receive? Will you receive actual textbooks and workbooks from an accredited training institute or is it a binder compiled by the host agency?
  • Does the host agency require you to make your bookings in Sabre or Apollo? While these tools may financially benefit the host agency, it’s not so easy for a new agent. These tools are difficult to learn and consume a significant portion of your scheduled training program.

And the final question, one of the most important questions for you personally:

  • After you start with your host agency, are you supported by a team dedicated exclusively to new agents or by an accessible, experienced agent of that host agency?

The above questions are key to know the answers to before moving forward with any host agency. As they always say, the devil is in the details! We would love an opportunity to review the program with you one on one. First we suggest you watch the webinar and then we will follow up with an email that contains a link to the frequently asked questions section. Alternatively you can call Rhonda, VP of Talent Development toll free at 1-855-727-8126.

Planning a trip is a time-consuming and complicated process. Travel agents simplify this process for their customers in addition to providing consultation services and entire travel packages. They may book flights, cruises, rental cars and hotels, as well as resort stays and events. Agents cater to a wide demographic, serving both individuals and corporations. They may also concentrate in a special segment of the field; many agents specialize in leisure travel, business trips, or location-specific journeys to Europe, Africa, or Asia.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How do I get to Nova Scotia?

There are plenty of ways to get to Nova Scotia including driving along the Trans-Canadian Highway and connecting with the Nova Scotia Highway 104, flying into Halifax Stanfield National Airport from various destinations within Canada, and catching public transport including ferry, bus, and train services.

How do I get around Nova Scotia?

Getting around Nova Scotia is super easy if you're traveling with a car or able to rent one from the airport once you've landed.

Without a car, getting to and from different places in Nova Scotia becomes more difficult with no clear public transportation system that will take you to the popular/tourist locations.

There are bus and shuttle companies that operate day tours from places such as Halifax to Lunenburg, as well as public transport systems within the larger cities themselves that are reliable and efficient.

What's the weather like in Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia's weather features four distinct seasons throughout the year: warm to hot summers and cold, snowy winters.

The shoulder seasons of fall and spring also experience typical weather patterns such as mild to warm temperatures and frequent rainfall.

When is the best time to visit Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia has something to offer in every season but the most popular time to travel to this maritime province is in summer when events and festivals are frequent and the weather's warm enough to lay out on its beaches.

The shoulder seasons of autumn and spring are also a great time to visit the region with fewer crowds, more availability, and lower accommodation prices than in the height of summer.

Some of the best things to do during these seasons are hiking and surfing.

What do I pack for a trip to Nova Scotia?

What to pack for a trip to Nova Scotia is largely like packing for any other destination but it does depend on what time of the year you're traveling in.

Temperatures rarely get that high in summer so packing dresses, t-shirts, and shorts will do the trick.

If you're traveling in winter make sure you rug up with waterproof jackets, coats, lots of layers, and thick socks.

Regardless of the season you're traveling in, you should always pack sunscreen, a reusable drink bottle, a backpack or day bag, and a camera.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Luc was the best tour guide ever. He kept our group on time and informed. Every stop was interesting, and the hotels and lodges were very good.
My husband and I did the tour of the Martimes in Nova Scotia. It was beautiful country. Our tour guide, Louise, was fantastic. She is so kind and caring; she is an amazing safe driver. She's always there for you. The only thing I didn't like about the trip was the motel in Baddeck. It was so old; musty smelling. Needs a total renovation. Everything about it was pretty awful. No-one on the trip was happy with this hotel. Other than that, we did enjoy the rest of the trip. the other hotels were fine. The Picnic Louise arranged was a lot of fun and the hike was awesome on the Cabot trail.

The wonders of the Bay of Fundy tour was the best tour I’ve ever been on. We were a small group who enjoyed each other’s company and shared many varied and interesting experiences. As a solo traveler I was welcomed by everyone in the group and never felt on my own. Our tour director, Eunice, was welcoming, knowledgeable and went the extra mile to ensure we really experienced the local culture and delicacies. Our coach driver, Hank, who was also welcoming and knowledgeable, had a quietly confident manner which made you feel extremely safe when on the road. He also went the extra mile to ensure we got the most out of every experience. I would highly recommend this tour.
Very interesting stops, great commentary, excellent bus & driver. I signed up to see the tidal bore, but found the historical stops to be just as interesting.

This was our 7th trip with Insight and this was a nice paced tour of the Maritimes. The tour director was excellent as well as the coach driver. As long as my wife and I can keep traveling we'll be going with Insight.

Fantastic trip. Well organised and friendly, approachable staff. Was so easy to see so much more than we could have organised on our own. Met some lovely people. So much fun! Will definitely do a tour again and highly recommend.
Absolutely fantastic tour guide, dexterous coach driver !!

Contiki

Please beware of this tour as many things are not included: Bike tour PEI didn’t happen Walking tour in Moncton and Halifax did not happen on our tour. And lastly please consider this as if I knew this before I would NOT have booked this trip. If you do not do the rafting “ as an optional activity” they literally don’t have anything else for you to do for three hours. Our tour guide went rafting and left the majority of the group behind. The driver was kind enough to drop as off at a mall to occupy our time. I did not pay that much money to sit in mall. I wanted to see the maritimes. Very disappointed in Contiki be
Very safe and well organized

Tours of Distinction

Tours of Distinction

We had a fine experience with the Tours of Distinction trip to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, which began and ended in Ellsworth, ME. The tour director, Julie, did an excellent job, the bus driver was pleasant and provided a safe trip, and the local guides with whom the tour contracted helped our group understand local history and culture. Especially helpful to me was learning about Acadian history: the Acadian roots in southern France, British expulsion of them from Atlantic Canada, and their eventual return to the Maritimes. The one piece of history I wish had been discussed more was that of the Gaelic settlers. Given the name of the province, Nova Scotia ("New Scotland"), it would have been helpful to hear more of their history in the area.
Positive: Angelina, the bus driver, made our trip. She was the best part, to be honest. Negative: Communication prior to the trip, not knowing what to expect in detail, food, the bus leaked, No OFFICIAL tour guide, and no wifi on the bus. All in all, we all enjoyed ourselves and made the best of it. However, I would not travel with this company again.
