Duty-Free-Shops in Tschechien: Läden, Preise und Angebot

Duty-Free-Shops Tschechien

Duty Free ).

Diesen Vorteil nutzen sog.

Exclusive Club Karte erhalten.

Bezahlen in Duty-Free-Shops

12 Best Things To Do In Eger, Hungary

travel free cz eger

Eger impresses with its history, architecture – and wine culture! It has great wine, probably the best in Hungary, lovely cobbled streets, thermal spas and Baroque mansions. It’s surrounded by beautiful nature: Bükk National Park is on its doorstep, and the stunning caves of Aggtelek National Park are also not far. If you only visit one city beyond Budapest during your trip to Hungary , let it be Eger.

In this post we’re telling you about all the best things to do in Eger so that you immediately fall in love with it. Practical advice, like getting to Eger from Budapest or the best time for visiting, is also included.

Best place to stay in Eger:

  • luxury : Hotel Eger & Park (central location)
  • mid-range : Imola Udvarház Dessert Hotel (central location)
  • budget : Afrodité Apartments (central location)
  • nature getaway: Tree Houses in Noszvaj (remote location)

Best things to do in Eger

Is Eger worth visiting? – you ask. While no other Hungarian city can match Budapest in terms of the size and the number of attractions, visiting them can be just as memorable. Because they’re so different, and part of their charm is exactly their smaller size. But also their cultural significance and rich history. If you’ve only seen Hungary’s capital, you still don’t know much about Hungary. And one of the best cities to take a day trip to is Eger.

Read this post, too: The Best Hungarian Cities (Beyond Budapest)

So let’s see what to do in Eger.

Visit the castle of Eger

One of the most famous Eger attractions is the middle age castle. The Castle Museum offers several exhibits to give insight into the castle’s and the city’s history, and you get the best panoramic views of Eger from the top of the old castle walls.

This is the castle that a handful of brave Hungarian soldiers defended against the Ottoman attack in 1552, protecting not only Hungary, but also the rest of Europe. This story was also written in the novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon which is a classic and the first historical novel in Hungarian literature. I’ve read this book several times since my childhood and love it very much. If you’re interested in Hungarian history, this is an entertaining way to get insight. Here you can find an audiobook in English , too. And you’ll surely hear about this book when visiting the exhibitions in Eger castle.

Castle of Eger, Hungary

Standing on a hill above the city of Eger, it’s rather a ruin than a real castle today, but after extensive renovations it’s in surprisingly good condition. From the medieval walls you get a wonderful view of Eger’s city center with the slim church towers and red roofs. It’s the best place to watch the sunset over the city.

Different buildings in the castle complex offer exhibitions where you can learn about the heroes of Eger, that famous siege in 1552 and the weapons used in that age. A peculiar fact: even though captain István Dobó and his soldiers held back the Ottomans in 1552, they finally took over the city in 1596, along with the majority of medieval Hungary. The 40 meters high Minaret with its 93 stairs was built during Turkish rule and it still stands today.

You can visit the ruin garden, the dungeon, the weapon exhibitions, the Turkish bath ruins, and movie illustrations help you imagine how the buildings once looked and how their commanders prepared them for the siege.

Enjoy views from the Minaret

Minaret, Eger, Hungary

This Minaret is one of the most important relics from the Ottoman period in Hungary. During the roughly 100 years of Ottoman invasion in Eger ten minarets were built, and there’s one that survived until today. You can climb the stairs that take you to the top of this red sandstone tower for more city views.

Travel back in time and try some magic in Lyceum

Here’s another place to see in Eger for history lovers. The gorgeous Baroque palace of Lyceum is a university building today, but the Archdiocese Library invites you for some time-travel . This old oak library has more than 130 000 rare books and manuscripts – and also a pretty ceiling fresco. This fresco is brilliant because it makes the flat ceiling look like a dome!

2023 update : Make sure to check the opening hours, because it varies throughout the year and it closes quite soon. It’s closed between December and January – and generally on Mondays all year (like most museums in Hungary). Here are the latest opening hours we found: from Tuesday to Sunday 9.30 am to 3.30 pm, guided tour at 11 am and 2 pm . You can see the official website here (translate it with Google Translate).

Lyceum, Eger, Hungary

But the most magical attraction at the Lyceum is the Magic Tower. Originally it was built as an astronomy tower, and today it has an astronomy exhibition, a planetarium, a Magic Room with interactive experiments and the camera obscura. Installed in 1779 this is probably the oldest functioning camera obscura in the world, followed by a similar one in Edinburgh from 1835.

You can also walk up to the Panorama terrace with the basic ticket to enjoy a 360-degree view of the city from the highest scenic viewpoint.

Opening hours: Apr 1 – 30, Sept 1 – Sept 31: 10 am to 6 pm (closed on Monday) May 1 – Aug 31: 10 am to 6 pm (every day) Oct 1 – March 31: 10 am to 4 pm (closed on Monday) Closed: between Dec 19 and Jan 9 See the official website here .

Hunt for impressive Baroque buildings

What to see in Eger if you’re after the most beautiful pieces of architecture? History is everywhere in Eger, not just in the castle, but on the cobbled streets, or in the magnificent Baroque churches and mansions.

Not far from the entrance of Eger Castle, you find the main square named in honor of the captain of the heroes of Eger: Dobó Square. This pretty square is dominated by a stunning Baroque church, the Minorite Church, the bronze statue of Dobó István and the Town Hall – an Eclectic style building from the late 19 th century.

Eger, Hungary

Then continue on Kossuth Lajos Street, one of the main streets with wonderful Baroque and Rococo buildings decorated with bent iron balconies. Kisrepost and Nagyrepost Palaces, and the Frank Monastery and Church are especially worth taking a look at. The oldest building in Eger is Buttler House.

Have an ice-cream on Széchenyi Street

Széchenyi Street is one of the best Eger tourist attractions to experience the lively, enchanting vibe of this city . It comes with colorful cafés, confectioneries and bars . In the warmer months you can sit out on the street and get a café, sweets or ice-cream while you are watching the different people on this busy walking street.

Taste wine in the Valley of the Beautiful Women

Hungary in general is famous for good wine. And one of our best wine regions is located on the slopes of the South-West part of Bükk Mountains, and its center is Eger.

About half an hour walk from the city center, there’s a place called the Valley of the Beautiful Women ( Szépasszonyvölgy in Hungarian). Being home to about 200 wine cellars, dozens of which are open to the public for wine-tasting, it’s the favorite of all wine lovers.

Eger, Hungary

But why the name “Valley of the Beautiful Women”? No one knows it for sure, but different stories are told. One of them says it’s a pagan goddess. Another says it was a beautiful frivolous local lady with a scandalous life. And another says that it was a beautiful waitress working in one of the cellars in the valley. Well, you can go figure it out for yourself.

Getting back to wine. The local wine in Eger is Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood from Eger). It’s a ruby red, dry wine made from a mixture of at least three different types of grapes from the region, and it goes well with red meat and spicy food. They say its name comes from that famous siege of 1552 when the Turks believed that the brave defenders of Eger got their strength from mixing bull’s blood with their wine. It’s probably true that the soldiers drank wine like people often did in that age, because they often didn’t have access to potable water.

Some other famous wines in the region are: Egri Kékfrankos and Egri Cabernet Sauvignon that are also red wines; Egri Leányka and Egri Muskotály – they are white wines.

Soak in Eger’s famous thermal bath

Another unique remnant of the Turkish era in Eger is the thermal bath culture. Hungary is famous for its countless thermal spas, anyway, and Eger is one of the top places to get a taste of it. The most special part of Eger Termál is probably its authentic Turkish bath . There are also therapeutic pools and a warm thermal pool with slightly sulphurous water at 37°C, and kids have their own fun pool.

Visit the Basilica

Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle, Eger, Hungary

Opposite to the impressive building of the Lyceum stands the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle, Hungary’s third-largest cathedral. It was built in the 19 th century in Neoclassical style, with a classic staircase fringed by Corinthian columns. It mimics the style of Rome’s Pantheon. Take a look inside, too, the interior is richly decorated.

Walk in the Archbishop’s Garden

The Archbishop’s Garden is the biggest park of Eger . For centuries it was a fenced off hunting ground for the bishops, finally opened to the public in 1919. Two of the original iron gates, masterpieces of Henrik Fazola, can still be seen on the northern and western sides of the park. You can also find remnants of French and English gardens inside with a decorative fountain and a pond.

A big playground and an outdoor sports park are modern additions, and they’re great places for a break in the day if you visit Eger with kids.

Take a day trip to Bükk National Park

Szalajka Valley, Hungary

Eger is built on the hills of the Bükk Mountains. Hungary’s mountains are not that high, and Bükk doesn’t reach a thousand metres either, but it’s an incredibly romantic national park . Enjoy the lovely forest trails, the palace hotel and hanging gardens of Lillafüred , Szalajka Valley with its Veil Waterfall or the Bükk Plateau covered with wildflowers every spring.

Read our detailed guide to Bükk National Park here!

Lake Hámori, Lillafüred, Hungary

Take a day trip to the thermal bath and limestone terraces of Egerszalók

There’s a unique thermal bath just 15 minutes drive away from Eger , in the small town of Egerszalók. It’s built next to a salt hill with limestone terraces – and limestone terraces like this can only be found at two other places in the world! (Pamukkale in Turkey, and the famous Mammoth Hot Springs terraces in Yellowstone National Park )

It’s one of the most popular spa centers in Hungary, and the thermal water here helps to cure many diseases. Saliris Resort Spa and Thermal Bath right next to the limestone terraces is popular for its five-star wellness services.

Take a half-day trip to Noszvaj Castle

Adorable Noszvaj Castle is only 15 minutes drive from Eger. This beautiful Baroque manor house was seriously damaged in the Second World War, then it was abandoned for a while. Several rounds of renovations started from the 1950s, and today the castle museum with five furnished rooms is open to the public. The furniture is not original, but age-appropriate, however, the most precious things to see inside are the Rococo frescos on the walls.

Noszvaj Castle has an English park with winding paths and large trees. Entrance ticket is needed both for the castle and the park. You can even choose to stay on the castle grounds: family-friendly Tündérkert Hotel was opened in 2016 , awaiting guests with elegant rooms and free castle access.

Best place to stay in Eger

Eger offers a range of accommodations. You find lots of fully-equipped apartments owned by locals . They’re a popular choice among Hungarian travelers, especially families, and it’s also a great way to support the local community while you visit. But wellness hotels like Hotel Korona Wellness or Hotel Eger & Park are also loved, especially by couples. Imola Hotel Platán is Hungary’s first adult friendly hotel and was selected as one of the best hotels in 2020.

If you’re looking for a bit more affordable hotel, Imola Udvarház Dessert Hotel is a great choice. It’s located directly under the Castle of Eger in the historical town centre, and it has a restaurant where you can taste the best of Hungarian cuisine. A delicious breakfast is included in the room rates. You can book a spacious family apartment and ask for a cot for children under 2.

For those who prefer a self-catering accommodation, Afrodité Apartments couldn’t be more central , located on Dobó Street, walking distance from all the main Eger tourist attractions. It offers a garden with a terrace and barbecue facilities for guests , and you can also rent bikes. Breakfast is included in the price.

Palace hotel of Lillafüred, Hungary

Looking for romantic places to stay near the city? The cute Tree Houses of Noszvaj with wellness services and an intimate closeness to nature is popular among couples. Hunguest Hotel Palota , the 4-star Neo-Renaissance palace hotel of Lillafüred is the most romantic and iconic base for exploring Bükk National Park.

Practical tips before you visit Eger, Hungary

How to get to eger from budapest.

Eger is about 1.5 hours drive from Budapest, mostly on motorway M3. If you plan to take day trips nearby, it’s comfortable to have a car, but public transport is quite good in Hungary. Even the smallest villages can be accessed at least by local buses, but they often run only once or twice a day, so check the timetable beforehand.

The Eger-Budapest distance by train is about 2 hours. There’s direct trains from Budapest Keleti Railway Station – check schedule and prices here .

The city center of Eger is easily walkable. There’s good public transport, but you don’t really need it for most attractions, especially if you book a central accommodation.

Another option is a Budapest to Eger day trip , which covers transportation and also the sightseeing part, offering a guided tour.

Book your private day trip from Budapest to Eger here.

And where to leave your car if you have one when visiting Eger? The city center has parking zones that require parking fees on weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm and on Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm. You can use public garages (fee applies), book an accommodation that includes free parking or leave your car on the outskirts of the city on the street.

Best time to visit Eger

Eger Castle, Hungary

Hungary gets green and full of flowers by May, and the months between May and October are the most popular for visiting any city or national park in Hungary. Because that’s when it’s the most pleasant to spend time outdoors, the average daily high temperature being 21°C.

Summer is the high season , with lots of Hungarian families visiting during the school holiday. It’s not only the most busy, but it can get unpleasantly hot for sightseeing, too. The hottest month of the year is July, with an average high temperature of 26°C.

Winter on the other hand, between November and March, is too cold and gray to really enjoy sightseeing – unless you mostly sit in cozy cafés and pick other indoor events. The coldest month of the year is January, with an average temperature of -2°C.

Our favorite time is May and September when the weather is often warm enough, and the city gets lively, but not too crowded. October might be nice, too, and fall colors give every Hungarian city a unique charm.

Does Eger tempt you?

Cheb is a city in Bohemia in Western Czech Republic with a population of 33,500 and is close to the German border.

Understand [ edit ]

The name is pronounced "khep" (the first sound like a German or Scottish "ch" or a Spanish "j" not as in "Chicken" - locals will make fun of you if you make this mistake). This town is sometimes called Eger in German, which was its official name until 1945. The city features a very quaint and pretty town square and winding alleys. However, outside of the center, the city is characterized by grimy heavy industry.

Visa-free Stays

A temporary stay in the Czech Republic without a visa entitles you to a short non-profit stay in the Czech Republic without a residence permit. In most cases, you can stay in the country for up to 90 days in any 180-day long period.

GENERAL INFO

Visa-free stay in the schengen area, bilateral agreements.

A visa-free mode enables you to enter and stay in the Czech Republic only with a passport. That is possible if you are a citizen of a country with which the EU, or the Czech Republic individually, has concluded a visa waiver agreement.

Other persons who can stay in the Czech Republic without a visa are:

  • EU citizens,
  • Holders of a long-term visa or a long-term residence permit for the purpose of scientific research issued by another EU Member State or their family members . However, they must reside in the Czech Republic for the same purpose and for no longer than 1 year.
  • Holders of a long-term residence permit for the purpose of studies issued by another EU Member State . However, they must reside in the Czech Republic for the same purpose and for no longer than 1 year.
  • third country nationals who are pupils with residence in another EU Member State travelling on a school trip with a group of pupils accompanied by a teacher if they are included on a list of pupils issued by the school on a unified form stating the pupils’ identities, purpose and length of their stay or transit,
  • parents in case of an EU citizen under 21 years of age of whom they take primary care,
  • offspring under 21 years of age or the offspring of the spouse of an EU citizen,
  • offspring and predecessors, or the offspring and the predecessors of the spouse of an EU citizen if they are dependent on the support or other primary care provided by the EU citizen or his/her spouse to satisfy their essential needs or, immediately before entering the Czech Republic, they were dependent on this support or other primary care in the country whose citizens they are or in the country where they had a residence permit.
  • foreigners under 15 years of age during hospitalisation if they arrived together with a foreigner in whose passport they are included and if this foreigner has left the Czech Republic,
  • foreigners who are minor children and who, based on a provisional measure of a corresponding authority, have been placed in a facility for children requiring immediate help or a child-care institution, or whose custody, based on a provisional measure of a corresponding authority or based on a decision of an authority of social and legal protection of children, was awarded to a physical person,
  • foreigners placed in security detention, custody or serving a custodial sentence, or those placed in a police cell or a facility for the detention of foreigners,
  • foreigners senteced to house arrest, or children, who are in prison with their mother, for a serving time of the sentence.

Who can stay in the Czech Republic without a visa?

Citizens of the countries for which a visa requirement was waived, which means that when they cross the external borders they do not have to have a visa. Furthermore, also foreigners to whom the visa requirement does not apply én the basis of bilateral international treaties.

In order to enter and move in the Schengen Area, you must carry a valid travel document . For more information, a complete list of countries and possible exceptions and restrictions, please see the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website .

How long can you stay in the Czech Republic without a visa?

You can temporarily stay without a visa in the Schengen Area for 90 days in any 180-day long period.

Example: If you are going to stay in the Schengen Area for 90 days from January to June (180 days), you must leave the Schengen Area after 90 days spent here. You can come back in February – 90 days within a 180-day period will start counting anew.

Do you have trouble counting the number of days in the visa-free mode? The Schengen calculator will help you.

A temporary stay without a visa cannot be extended. You must leave the Schengen Area after 90 days.

What obligations does a visa-free stay mean?

You must get registered at the Foreign Police within 3 days from the day you arrived in the Czech Republic. In the course of the whole stay, you must have sufficient funds and medical insurance.

What does a visa-free stay enable you to do?

A visa-free stay enables you to stay and move freely in the Czech Republic and the Schengen Area. Cyprus and Ireland are not part of the Schengen Area; therefore, it is not possible to enter these countries on a visa-free stay. Apply for a corresponding national visa before you travel to these countries.

You can also use a visa-free entrance and stay to collect your long-term or permanent residence permit. That is, you do not have to necessarily wait to receive a DV/R entry visa from a diplomatic mission. You must complete the whole process – registration at a Ministry of the Interior office, collection of biometric data and collection of the document – within the time limits given by the visa-free stay, i.e. usually within 90 days from your entrance into the Schengen Area.

What restrictions apply to a visa-free stay?

A visa-free stay is intended exclusively for non-profit purposes, therefore, you cannot be employed or do business. If you wanted to be economically active in the Czech Republic for a period shorter than 90 days, you can apply for a Schengen visa for the purpose of employment .

Can you use a visa-free stay to apply for a residence permit in the Czech Republic?

A visa-free stay is not intended, except in some cases, to apply for a long-term visa or a long-term residence permit in the Czech Republic. You must apply for these residence permits at a diplomatic mission in the country that issued you a travel document, where you have a long-term or permanent residence permit or of which you are a citizen.

However, you can use a visa-free stay to apply for a temporary or permanent residence permit of an EU citizen’s family member.

Who does this type of a visa-free stay apply to?

Only to the citizens of Argentina, Chile, Israel, the Republic of Korea, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Uruguay and Singapore; that is countries which have concluded a bilateral Visa Waiver Agreement with the Czech Republic.

The maximum length of a temporary stay without a visa in the Czech Republic is in this case given by the particular agreement and, therefore, varies for each country.

The citizens of Argentina, Chile, Israel, the Republic of Korea, Costa Rica, Malaysia and Uruguay can stay without a visa in the Czech Republic for a maximum of additional 90 days beyond the scope of the 90/180 rule.

The citizens of Singapore can stay without a visa in the Czech Republic for a maximum of additional 30 days beyond the scope of the 90/180 rule.

You must get registered at the Foreign Police within 3 days from the day you arrived in the Czech Republic. In the course of the whole stay, you must have sufficient funds and medical insurance .

What does this type of a visa-free stay enable you to do?

A visa-free stay under a bilateral agreement enables you to stay and move freely in the Czech Republic.

You can also use a visa-free entrance and stay to collect your long-term or permanent residence permit. That means, you do not have to wait to receive a DV/R entry visa from a diplomatic mission. The whole process must be completed – registration at a Ministry of the Interior office, biometric data sampling and collection of the finalized document – all has to be done within the time limit of the visa-free stay.

A visa-free stay is intended exclusively for non-profit purposes, therefore, you cannot be employed or do business. If you want to be economically active in the Czech Republic for a period shorter than 90 days, you can apply for a Schengen visa for the purpose of employment .

During a visa-free stay under a bilateral agreement, you cannot travel to other EU Member States or Schengen countries – the possibility to stay applies only to the Czech Republic as it raises from a particular bilateral agreement.

A visa-free stay is not intended, except in some cases, to apply for a long-term visa or a long-term residence permit in the Czech Republic. You must apply for these residence permits at a diplomatic mission in the country that issued your travel document, where you have a long-term or permanent residence permit or of which you are a citizen.
