How to travel from Hoi An to Dalat

travel hoi an to dalat

Hoi An rarely fails to enchant visitors who come it’s way. It’s a place where Chinese lanterns dangle over local noodle stalls and artisan coffee shops hide in the atmospheric alleys, where water buffalo groan on the rice paddies and moody temples beckon on the street corners.

Hoi An is hard to leave, but there are loads more to see in Vietnam, for example, the highland hill town of Dalat. Set up on the cool ridges of the Central Highlands about 270 miles south of Hoi An, it’s a popular escape from the hot and humid coast. Trekking, waterfall swimming, and farm visits are the activities of choice. Planes, buses, and trains can help you get there. Let’s see how…

Hoi an to Dalat by Plane

Time – 1 hour (flight time only) Price – From around $65 per person Comfort – 5/5

If you’ve got the money, opt to fly from Hoi An to Dalat. These two enthralling Vietnamese destinations are only 270 or so miles apart as the crow flies but they’re a whopping 380 miles apart by road. That means the fastest overland links (which we’ll get to below) are going to be in excess of 10 hours of traveling, while flights – fast, zippy flights – are a mere one hour in the air plus the two hours or so you’ll spend at check-in and on transfers to the airport in the first place.

At the time of writing, just two carriers are running regular connections on the route: VietJet Air and the budget flier Bamboo Airways. They both leave the Hoi An region in the morning, usually arriving around 9am or 10am. Be very careful when you come to book. A search for flights to Dalat often returns connections to the relatively close-by Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Saigon. That’s not where you want to land. You want links to Lien Khuong Airport (DLI), which is less than 30 minutes transfer to the center of Dalat itself.

Flying is a whole load faster than going overland on this route, taking a solitary hour over 14 or more on the road.

Notice that we mentioned how the flights leave from the  region  of Hoi An. We say that because Hoi An doesn’t actually have an airport of its own. Instead, the departure point will be the midsized regional hub at the Da Nang International Airport, about 40 minutes drive by taxi from Hoi An proper. Expect to pay around $15 for the transfer to the departure terminal.

The good news is that airfare on this snappy route over the heartlands of South Vietnam rarely gets astronomical. The base cost of a ticket sits around the $42 mark, but you’ll probably need to pay $20 or so more if you want checked luggage. And then there’s the added price of those aforementioned trips to and from the airports on both sides (between $20-30 in total). Remember that flights to Dalat are almost always cheaper at least 90 days in advance of travel. Thankfully, you can now compare and book them online using 12GoAsia well before you arrive.

Hoi an to Dalat by Bus

Hoi An to Dalat by sleeper bus

Time – 10.5-14 hours Price – $18 Comfort – 3/5

If you simply can’t afford to fly and don’t want the hassle of piecing together train and bus tickets, there are direct bus options that run between Hoi An and Dalat. Demanding at least 10.5 hours or more on the road, they are a bit of an overland odyssey. You’ll need to steel yourself for an epic ride that covers nearly 300 miles of the long Vietnamese coast highway before veering off into the mountains of Lam Dong Province for another 80 miles on winding roadways. To put it another way, this isn’t the shortest or the comfiest way to travel by any stretch.

There are overnight buses aplenty that cost under $20 per person. Be ready for a very long ride over winding roads on coaches that aren’t the comfiest.

They include Full Moon Party Tour and Lien Hung, who tend to have the fastest express buses. Some start their trip in Hoi An itself but others go out of the terminal in nearby Da Nang. That’s certainly something to consider when you come to book because choosing the latter will mean having to pay extra for transfers to the station before you even get on the road.

Ta Nung Pass in Da Lat City, Vietnam. The winding road in the distance is Da Lat city

The buses themselves have a bit of a reputation throughout Southeast Asia. It’s not a good reputation, either. They might be called VIP coaches, but these vehicles are often pretty old, with scuffed seats, and have poor climate control. On the flip side, the trip will only set you back $18, so this is very much the budget-friendly way to go. Expect services to leave Hoi An in the mid-afternoon and travel during darkness hours for arrival in Dalat sometime the following morning.

Hoi an to Dalat by Train and Bus

Nha Trang Railway Station In Nha Trang City. Nha Trang City Is A Coastal City In Khanh Hoa Province Where Is One Of The Most Important Tourist Hubs Of Vietnam.

Time – 14 hours+ Price – $44+ Comfort – 4/5

Trains are a real adventure in Vietnam. What’s more, there’s no reason you can’t get your taste of the legendary Reunification Express – the iconic train that runs north-to-south the whole way up the country – on the trip from Hoi An to Dalat. Sadly, the locomotives won’t be able to take you the whole way since there simply aren’t any railway lines. You’ll have to change to a bus to complete the last four hours through the karst mountains and into the Central Highlands region from the coast.

The first leg will be the long train from Da Nang to Nha Trang. This is a very popular connection indeed, so expect in excess of five departure choices throughout the day. They are all run by Vietnam Railways (the national railway authority) and take around nine hours in total. There are both day-train options for those who enjoy watching the world go by and night-train options for those who prefer to save some dollar bills on the cost of accommodation for the night.

There’s something romantic and adventurous about traveling by train in Vietnam, even if getting to Dalat by rail means changing to a bus for the last leg into the mountains.

Nha Trang is where you go from train to bus. Regular minivans and larger buses run between that vibrant coastal town and the hill station of Dalat. They usually leave from the Southern Terminal, which is a little confusingly on the western side of the city, and take around 3.5-4 hours in all. Alternatively, you could bag yourself a private taxi for this portion of the trip. That will probably add $45 or so to the total estimated cost but promises to be more comfortable and about an hour quicker.

Phuong Trang bus interior and exterior of the bus

Talking of prices…The train portion of the trip can cost anything between $19 and $37. The latter prices are for the swish 1st Class Sleeper cabins that come with lay-down beds, air conditioning, and even complimentary snacks. The cheapest is for seats in shared compartments, which we only recommend if you’re taking the day train. Add to that around $15 for the transfer to the train station in Da Nang from downtown Hoi An, plus whatever it costs to get from Nha Trang to Dalat. And you’re looking at a minimum cost of about $44 here.

The trip from Hoi An to Dalat takes you from one of the undisputed jewels in the crown of Vietnam to one of the country’s more off-the-beaten-path destinations. It’s about swapping Instagrammable street scenes and old Buddhist temples for Francophone villas in the mountains and trekking routes through rice paddies.

Overland, expect to spend 10-15 hours on buses and trains from Hoi An to Dalat. Or there’s flying, which is a whole load quicker but also the most expensive option overall.

Dalat weather

Sited at an altitude of 1,500 meters, with Langbiang peak at 2,167 meters above sea level as the highest point, Dalat is surrounded by magnificent mountain ranges and high plains, contributing to its cool and pleasant weather year-round. The temperature difference between days and nights in Dalat is relatively large, with an average of 11 °C. The highest temperature reported is around 30 °C, and the lowest is under 5 °C.

The four seasons in Dalat are not evenly divided. Mid-year is often affected by tropical depressions and seasonal winds from the Southwest and Central, resulting in prolonged periods of rain. However, every month, every season in Dalat has its own appeal. Below is a descriptive timeline of Dalat weather to help you choose the best time to visit based on your preference.

Spring (January – March)

The average temperature during this season is about 19 °C, with temperatures ranging from 14 to 28 °C. This is also the dry season in Dalat, with long hours of sunshine and low humidity, making it the ideal time to visit. The pleasant weather allows for more daylight for outdoor activities, resulting in many local festivals taking place to celebrate the beauty of floral blossoms and traditional holidays.

Due to the favorable weather and diverse festive activities, this is also the peak season for local Vietnamese people to travel to Dalat. Traffic may be more crowded than usual, and accommodation options may be limited due to high demand.

Summer (April – September)

Summer in Dalat lasts longer and is characterized by long rainy days and high humidity. During the day, the temperature is nice and warm, but it drops quickly at night, creating a large temperature difference. The temperature revolves around 27 °C in April and May, and then typically drops to around 23 °C from June to September. It rains almost every day during this season in Dalat, with the heaviest rain usually falling in the afternoons. You can still fit many activities into your itinerary by planning ahead and doing more outdoor activities in the morning, followed by spending the afternoons and evenings in cozy, vintage cafes or restaurants, watching the mountainous town covered in a curtain of rain.

Autumn (October – November)

Although October and November are considered autumn in Dalat, the weather does not greatly vary from summer, except for lower humidity during daytime. The number of rainy days per month also decreases, giving more hours of sunlight for exploration.

Winter (December)

The average temperature in December is 18 °C with an average daylight of 11 hours. This is also when some of the most iconic flowers of Dalat bloom, creating a picturesque and colorful background. So, if you enjoy natural landscape photography, this is a great time for it. Additionally, Dalat, with its orange light illuminating the white barns at night, the chalets nestled on the hillsides, and the winter breeze, makes for a lovely Christmas holiday.

Overall, there is always a reason to visit Dalat regardless of the season. While Dalat is a festival destination during the dry season, such as spring and winter, it is a perfect getaway even during the rainy seasons of summer and autumn when other Northern and Southern cities are unbearably hot. Due to its natural attractions, it is not surprising that Dalat can be overcrowded during weekends, which is the high season for this foggy city. Therefore, if you are looking for favorable weather to visit Dalat, December to March are recommended months. However, if you want to experience local and less touristy experiences, weekdays in any season would work.

Dalat boasts enchanting landscapes and favorable weather conditions year-round, making it a premier holiday destination in the South.

Inbound flights to Dalat depart from cities such as Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City , Da Nang , Hai Phong, Vinh, Thanh Hoa, Quy Nhon , Can Tho, and Phu Quoc . Meanwhile, at the moment, some outbound flights depart to Dalat from Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Korea (Seoul, Muan, and Daegu), Thailand (Bangkok), and China (Lanzhou).

Flights are operated by various aviation companies ranging from economic airlines to national and more premium ones. The cost of a one-way trip from Ho Chi Minh City ranges from around 500,000 VND to 2,000,000 VND ($21 to $85), with higher prices from other northern cities. However, you can get good deals if you book in advance.

Lien Khuong International Airport is 30 kilometers from the city center. As soon as you arrive at the airport, there are two options to get you to Dalat center:

  • Airport taxis: Bookable at the airport, with fares ranging from 250,000 VND to 300,000 VND ($11 to $13) and a travel time of 30 to 40 minutes without traffic. This fare includes tolls and airport fees and will take you directly to your desired location.
  • Airport buses: Station is located outside the arrival terminal and staffed with personnel to assist with bus booking. Tickets cost 40,000 VND ($1.7), and each ride takes at least 45 minutes to reach the city center without traffic. Buses operate from 6 AM to 6 PM and depart from the airport every 15 to 30 minutes. However, keep in mind two disadvantages: (1) The schedule is often based on the arrival of flights, so you may need to wait for the next flight if you don’t go directly to the bus station upon arrival. (2) Buses only run between the airport and Dalat Central Market (at 01 Le Thi Hong Gam St), so you’ll need to arrange additional transportation to your final destination.”

If you are based in Ho Chi Minh City or other Southern cities, taking a night bus will be another reasonable option due to more flexible schedules and economical prices. There are many local buses operating the Dalat route; however, Thanh Buoi Bus and Phuong Trang (Futa) Bus are preferred for their quality and professionalism.

In general, the prices for different bus companies and seat types are comparable. However, for a more comfortable and restful journey, it is recommended to opt for a premium or VIP bus option. This will ensure that you are well-rested and ready to explore upon arrival in Dalat in the morning.

1. Thanh Buoi Bus

Thanh Buoi Bus Company operates two routes to Dalat, including Can Tho – Dalat and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) – Dalat. An advantage of choosing Thanh Buoi is its variety of seat options.

  • Standard sleeper buses: a bed/seat in a 44-seat bus. Price: 270,000 VND ($11) from Ho Chi Minh City and 400.000 VND ($17) from Can Tho. These buses are relatively old with narrow beds (which you can hardly straighten your legs on) and no curtain to give you a sense of privacy. Most of the time, the standard buses would depart late because they had to wait for the passengers to fill the seats. In short, this should only be an option for its low price and when there is no other option of transport.
  • VIP sleeper buses: a bed/seat in a 22-seat bus. Price: 420,000 VND ($18) from Ho Chi Minh City. These are the most premium, operated with new and clean buses. What you have is pretty much a capsule room with comfortable beds, curtains to separate your space from others, wifi, and a TV screen for entertainment.
  • Limousine buses: a seat in a 26-seat bus. Price: 310.000 VND ($13). This bus leaves only once a day at 11 PM from Ho Chi Minh City. These are newly introduced by the bus company, targeting those who are uncomfortable with no upstairs seats. They are featured by one-level spacious beds, which you will feel more stable sitting and sleeping on.

2. Phuong Trang (Futa) Bus

Phuong Trang (Futa) Bus Company only operates standard sleeper buses, which can be quite narrow and lack privacy curtains. As one of the first bus companies to offer long-distance trips, the buses used are relatively older. The cost for a standard sleeper bus is 300,000 VND ($12.5).

A benefit of choosing Phuong Trang Bus is its multiple destinations, including Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho. Additionally, the company offers a user-friendly website and mobile app, making it easy to check for seat availability and book a trip online.

Getting around Dalat

The transportation infrastructure in Dalat is well-developed, featuring newly-constructed wide and flat roads. This offers various options for transportation, depending on your purpose and budget. Below are some common modes of transportation for getting around the city.

Motorbikes are always the best choice for exploring a city, not just in Dalat, but anywhere else in Vietnam, as motorbikes are a big part of Vietnamese culture. The cost of renting a bike ranges from 100,000 VND to 200,000 VND, depending on the type of bike and the time you visit, with prices usually lower on weekdays. A manual bike costs 100,000 VND to 120,000 VND ($4 to $5) per day, while an automatic bike costs 150,000 VND to 180,000 VND ($6 to $7) per day. However, this price does not include petrol, so the bike will likely come with an empty gas tank. Make sure to check the tank and find the nearest petrol station to fill it up, as 50,000 VND ($2.1) should be enough for a full day of exploring. Delivery and pickup of the bike are included in the service and will be made to and from wherever you are. A driving license and a helmet are required to ride a motorbike, and in Vietnam, we drive on the right.

Unlike other major cities where ride-hailing apps are dominant, traditional taxis are still preferred in Dalat. If you plan to stay around the city center, using a taxi service is recommended as the locations are not too spread out and the fares are reasonable. If you are traveling with a large family and want to visit the major tourist attractions, taxis can be booked as a half-day or full-day private car for around 700,000 to 1,000,000 VND ($29 to $42).

In addition to well-known names such as Mai Linh taxis, the new generation of taxis in Dalat is registered and operated through an application. They may not look like traditional taxis (without a company sign), but they are reliable. Just make sure you get into the correct car by checking the number plate before getting in. Some popular and reliable taxi brands in Dalat are Dalat Taxi, Mai Linh, and Hoa Binh.

Electric buses

There are five common routes currently operated. These serve as usual hop-on and hop-off buses, so you can get in and get off anytime.

  • Operation time: 7:30 AM – 10:00 PM daily
  • Ticket price: 30,000 – 45,000 VND ($1.2 – $1.9)

Route 1: Yersin Park – Tran Quoc Toan St – City Flower Garden – Yersin Park. This route will take you around Xuan Huong Lake, a symbol of the natural beauty of Dalat. You will drive through the main roads in the city center, passing many colorful flower gardens and city parks, giving you an overview of the town. This is a great option for first-time visitors to Dalat.

Route 2: Yersin Park – Tran Quoc Toan St – Ho Tung Mau St – Tran Phu St – Le Hong Phong St – Trieu Viet Vuong St – Tuyen Lam Lake Tourist Complex. This route will take you out of the city to the South, offering a panoramic view of vast pine forests, magnificent mountains, and a tranquil lake.

Route 3: Yersin Park – Tran Quoc Toan St – Ho Tung Mau St – Tran Hung Dao St – Hung Vuong St – Highway 20 – Trai Mat. The highlight of this route is a breathtaking view of Linh Phuoc Pagoda, a unique religious structure in Dalat. Its final stop is at Trai Mat, often called the town of clouds because in the early morning, the entire village appears to be floating in a sea of white fog and fluffy clouds.

Route 4: Xuan Huong Lake Boat Station – Tran Quoc Toan St – Dinh Tien Hoang St – Phu Dong Thien Vuong St – Mai Anh Dao St – Valley or Love. This route is perfect if you plan to explore the Valley of Love afterward.

Route 5: Yersin Park – Tran Quoc Toan St – Nguyen Trai St – Quang Trung St – Phan Chu Trinh St – Ho Xuan Huong St – Than Tho Lake – Ngo Gia Tu St – Thai Phien Flower Village. This route will show you why Dalat is known as “The city of a thousand flowers.” The route follows winding hill roads with views of flower barns on one side, leading to the destination of Thai Phien Flower Village, where hundreds of types of flowers are grown, harvested, and delivered nationwide.

As a popular holiday destination, Dalat has seen significant growth in transportation and infrastructure, making it highly accessible for travelers.

Going by road it’s even longer though, following the contours of the land and the main highways, which run mostly along the coast, the shortest road route is 635 kilometers (397 miles), so if you’re traveling by road, be prepared for a long journey. The good news is that you won’t have to drive yourself as there are buses running the route from Dalat to Hoi An daily. Flying is also an option if you’re looking for a fast way of traveling, or if you want to try several different forms of transport you could also opt for a bus and a train.

Flights from Dalat to Hoi An

Flights from Dalat to Hoi An

When you have such a long distance to cover, flying is always the fastest way to get there. The problem is the cost, and this becomes more of an issue when there is only a limited service operating between cities, as is the case from Dalat to Hoi An. Vietnam Airlines is currently the only airline flying this route and at the time of writing they have just one direct service per day, leaving at 5:10pm and arriving at 6:15pm, so the flights only takes about an hour.

The airport serving Dalat is the Lien Khuong Airport which is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of the city and there are shuttle vans that you can take to the airport, or catch a taxi. At the other end, the closest airport to Hoi An is Da Nang International Airport. Similar to Dalat, Hoi An is about 30 kilometers south of Da Nang Airport and there are shuttles, taxis and Grab cars available to take you to Hoi An itself. Transfers to and from the airport at either end can be done quite cheaply but the flight itself is the most expensive way to get from Dalat to Hoi An.

Dalat to Hoi An by Bus

travel hoi an to dalat

If saving money is on your agenda, taking the bus from Dalat to Hoi An is a much better idea than flying! Buses are considerably cheaper than flights, and because the bus goes directly from the center of Dalat to Hoi An, you don’t have to worry about making your way to the airport and the additional transfer costs that go with that.

But, traveling by bus does have its disadvantages. There is only one bus company currently offering direct buses from Dalat to Hoi An so you may be limited when booking your tickets as there’s just one departure per day. Booking your bus tickets early becomes even more important in these circumstances, as you may find buses are full if you leave it too close to the day of departure or at weekends and holidays. Hanh Café is the bus company, and you can book tickets through the travel website 12Go.asia . Their search results for trips from Dalat to Hoi An will also show you the available flights so you can book flights or direct buses.

As well as being limited with choice, you’re limited with the type of bus. Hanh Café only operates a Standard Bus on this route, so you’ll get air conditioning but nothing else. The seats will be comfortable enough but they are just standard seats that won’t recline and when you’re going to be traveling for 15 hours this is a long time to be stuck on a bus. Sleeping could be difficult even though you will be traveling overnight – the bus departs from Dalat at 1pm and arrives at Hoi An at 4am.

When you’re looking for a little more adventure, you can travel indirectly from Dalat to Hoi An using buses and trains. Traveling this way won’t save you time, and it won’t be any cheaper than taking a bus alone, but it’s something that you would do for the experience!

You first need to catch a bus from Dalat to Nha Trang . This takes about 4 hours. At Nha Trang you’ll get on a train to Da Nang , which is a further 9 to 11 hours, depending on the exact service, and then once at Da Nang you’ll take a bus to Hoi An which is about an hour to 90 minutes travel time. As we said, this won’t save you time or money but if you’re visiting Vietnam for a longer period and have the time to spare, it’s an exciting way to get from Dalat to Hoi An. Tickets for all three journeys are available at 12Go too.

With Da Nang being the larger city, there are often more options to get you to Da Nang, and then it’s a relatively short transfer from Da Nag to Hoi An. There are more bus options, for example, including sleeper buses, so this may be something to look into. But, if you have the money and want to get from Dalat to Hoi An quickly, opt for a flight.

About the ride from Hoi An to Da Lat

After exploring the charming Hoi An , it’s time to go south to visit another cute town. Da Lat is a scenic mountain town, which is one of the top honeymoon destinations for couples from Vietnam.

When traveling the 635 kilometer (395 mile) distance between Hoi An and Da Lat, you have one option to make the journey:

  • A cozy sleeper bus that will take you to Hoi An in 18 to 20 hours

When it comes to the best time of the year to visit Da Lat, it comes down to what you want to do while you’re there. Between January and March, the temperatures fluctuate between 20 and 28 °C, and it can get a bit cold, especially in the evenings. This time of the year is beautiful in Da Lat, because many trees and flowers start to blossom, and you can enjoy magnificent lush green and rose colors.

Between April and June, the temperatures go up to 30 °C. There are more chances of rainfall and fog. Compared to Ho Chi Minh City, this time of the year is much more comfortable in Da Lat, and there is no extreme heat or unbearable rainfall. You can still do many things around town, just bring a raincoat with you and you’ll be good to go.

July brings humidity and the long heavy rains. As already mentioned before, it’s not as extreme as in some other places in Vietnam, so don’t let that put you off. The rain and fog create a romantic atmosphere, and you can enjoy these beautiful views sitting in cozy coffee shops all around town.

As October arrives, the temperature drops, but the flowers start to blossom. So, even though Da Lat is cold at this time of the year, you can still experience all four seasons in just one day!

What to see when traveling from Hoi An to Da Lat

The journey between Hoi Dan and Da Lat is an overnight trip, which makes it perfect to rest, catch up with your sleep, or do some work before you arrive into the town. Overnight journeys are a great choice for travelers on a budget, as they also save you the money you’d spend on accommodation.

Da Lat is one of the most scenic places in Vietnam. Here, you’ll find beautiful lakes, colorful gardens, lush green forests, and a lot more.

Before you start exploring all Da Lat has to offer, you’re probably looking to have a quick bite. Head straight to the Central Market , where you’ll find a large number of street food joints. All of your favorite Vietnamese street food is here: noodles, fried snacks, and barbecued meat. The market closes early in the evening, so you might want to come earlier in the day.

After you’ve visited the Central Market, you can stroll around town and enjoy some of the beautiful spots such as Lake of Sighs, Dalat Flower Gardens, the quirkiest attraction – the Crazy House, Xuan Huong Lake, Linh Phuoc Pagoda, Dalat Train Station, and other great spots.

The nature around Da Lat is amazing, and you can spend days exploring it. Some of the best spots you can hike to include the Elephant Falls, Datanla Waterfalls, Pongour Falls, Prenn Falls, and Bidoup Niu Ba National Park.

While you’re here, don’t forget to enjoy the many amazing coffee houses that are dotted all around the town.

Taking a bus

Hopping on a bus between Hoi An and Da Lat is a common way to make the trip between two towns. The journey is quite long, but all buses travel overnight. This gives travelers an opportunity to rest, catch up with their sleep, and save money on accommodation.

The buses are well equipped to make the journey as comfortable as possible. Some of the amenities buses have are air conditioning, reclining seats, and blankets.

During the peak season, the buses have an open policy. This means that the tour operators might sell tickets to locals and allow them to sit on the floor. This may cause some noise and crowd. If you’re worried that you might not be able to fall asleep, you can buy some earplugs before you board the bus.
