I Flew First Class From Rome to NYC—6 Outfit Mistakes I Avoided to Look Polished

business-class-travel-outfits-310796-1700928992749-main

Last month, when I pulled up to Rome's Fiumicino airport, it wasn't in an outfit I'd normally wear to board a 10-hour flight. In fact, you'd probably guess I was heading to the office or a lunch meeting if it weren't for the  roller suitcase I had in tow. But when I had the opportunity to travel in business class for a work trip I was taking to Europe, I jumped at the opportunity to update my typical  travel uniform for one that would help me dress the part of a frequent business-class flyer.

I wore the trousers that I wear to the office most days, the ballet flats I'd worn out to dinner the night before, and the designer handbag that's usually already packed deep in my luggage. In other words, it was a far cry from the athleisure staples I usually opt for. But without sacrificing comfort, I made a few key tweaks that looked far more put-together but ultimately still felt just as relaxed as if I were wearing sweats. It should go without saying, but I'm by no means telling you what you should do or wear when traveling. Instead, I'm simply filling you in on the styling choices I personally made to look and feel my best.

Here, I'm sharing the six outfit swaps I made for an ultra-polished airport ensemble . So no matter what your seating assignment is like, read on for my business class travel outfit tips that will have you looking your best for the next time you head to the airport.

Avoided Wearing: Leggings as Pants

Wore instead: relaxed jeans and trousers.

First things first, I knew I had to ditch my leggings. Don't get me wrong, I still wear them on most short domestic flights, but in order to dress the part for business class, they were the first things I skipped. Instead, I wore a pair of ultra-relaxed trousers that were so roomy they were equally are as comfortable as any leggings or sweatpants. On my outbound flight, I wore a pair of relaxed jeans that were a tad more casual than the trousers but still helped me feel pulled together.

Shop trousers and relaxed jeans:

Gap + SoftSuit Trousers

Avoided Wearing: Athletic Sneakers

Wore instead: ballet flats and loafers.

A pair of cool flats like ballet flats or loafers is a solid option instead of sneakers, and what's more is that they're easier to slip on and off to get through security and during the flight when you want to get even comfier.

Shop flats:

Jeffrey Campbell + Dancerina Ballet Flat

Avoided Wearing: Only a Big Tote Bag

Wore instead: also a handbag.

For most business and first class tickets, you're allowed more carry-on bags than you are for economy. So instead of stuffing all my essentials into one personal item, I kept wearing my Bottega Veneta Andiamo Bag as a small personal item, but also carried a tote for my laptop plus my roller suitcase. Carrying a third bag that only held small items like my phone and passport felt like such a luxury of convenience since I usually find myself digging through a large tote when I get to security, but ultimately I thought the addition of a chic bag helped my outfit look more polished and considered. I even noticed that I wasn't the only woman who did so. Others boarding in business class also carried their smaller luxury handbags in addition to any larger totes.

Shop handbags:

Bottega Veneta + Small Andiamo Intrecciato Leather Top-Handle Bag

Avoided Wearing: Oversize Sweatshirts

Wore instead: elevated sweater.

Hoodies and sweatshirts are fine and all, but a cashmere or wool-blend sweater is usually just as comfortable but for me, it made a world of difference in my overall look. I wore the  Francis Sweater by Éterne and now it's a fixture in ever suitcase I pack.

Shop sweaters:

Éterne + Francis Sweater

Avoided: Skipping Jewelry

Wore instead: everyday jewelry.

Jewelry is the last thing I put on in the morning, so when I'm heading to the airport (and more than likely in a rush), I usually forget to put any on. I made a point of wearing all my everyday jewelry staples for this flight including a tennis necklace, small hoop earrings, and thin stacking rings (while also skipping anything too chunky or uncomfortable). I think it helped add a finishing touch to pull things together.

Shop jewelry:

Baublebar + Pear Cut Stone Tennis Necklace

Avoided: Puffer Jacket

Wore instead: trench coat or tailored coat.

Layers are key for any transcontinental flight, so I opted for a trench coat as a light layer atop my sweater. Now that it's getting to be winter, though, I'd wear a tailored wool coat for something thicker to lend some structure to my overall silhouette.

Shop outerwear:

Lioness + Trencherous Coat

Business Class Flights

What to wear on business class flight?

Air travel dress code is a popular topic and there is always a lot to tell on this topic. When it comes to appropriate clothing design for flying on business class, you are likely to meet different points of view.

  • If you are planning to travel on business class , your goal should be to look stylish and dressed up.
  • You should look professional but not too formal.
  • But your outfit should also provide you with the comfort you need during any long flight.

Dressing nicely and being polite doesn’t always guarantee you a 100% upgrade to a business class flight . But looking good still increases your chances of making a good impression upon flight attendants and it’s worth a try.

What to wear on business flight?

Minimalism looks sophisticated so by keeping it simple and classy you can look amazing on business class without spending much on expensive clothing . Some may argue that you should wear only suits on business class flights. But this is extreme.  On the other hand some think that since you have paid the not so cheap ticket price for a business class, you have the right to wear whatever you want.

What to wear on business flight?

What about the flight attendants staff? What they think on this topic?

A survey among different airline companies shows that they think passengers should wear neat and casual type of clothing . They said that the minimum dress standard for business class is T-shirt/singlet, pants and footwear that don’t have any offensive image or symbol. Flip flops or beachwear are a big no-no. The general rule is that your pants or skirt should cover your bottom half.

The survey shows that flight attendants on international business class flights think differently. They say that they don’t require a specific dress code for the airplane cabin or the business class lounge. Everything that isn’t indecent is acceptable. So, anyone who doesn’t meet the minimum dress rules won’t be allowed to travel on business class.

If you are going to fly on business class flight for the first time , it’s normal to be confused about what to wear during your flight. You can wear clothing that is comfortable but it should be stylish and fit into the standard formal style.

Wearing good looking and elegant clothes always makes a good impression and in some cases it can win you an upgrade to business class. If flight attendants should choose from two people just one for a business class upgrade, they are more likely to pick up the person who is dressed up. You don’t need to have an expensive taste to be able to pick up clothing that is fit for business class. There is no need to wear a clothing that is too extravagant. Pick up high quality fabrics and simple design with minimalistic detailing.

What to wear on business flight?

Business doesn’t have a strict dress code for the passengers traveling on this travel class. However, there are some unwritten rules about the way passengers dress for traveling on business class.

  • So, business class requires a smart casual style , not too formal but also not too everyday style
  • Avoid flashy lettering or prints or offensive slogans. Stick to simple and elegant design
  • Pick up clothes you will feel comfortable wearing but they look classy at the same time

What is the best clothing for business class flights?

What to wear on business flight?

Business class-friendly fashion choices

Your in-flight wardrobe should include basic clothing pieces that will look on point on a business class flight cabin or airport lounge.

We offer you an example of business class type of clothing you won’t go wrong with:

Clothes made of cotton are perfect for wearing on business class flight. Pick up cotton fabric in basic colors that isn’t branded or have complex pattern. You are free to choose other types of clothing as long as it obeys the rules of business class flights. Everyone should create their own in-flight type of clothing.

What to wear on business flight?

In-flight creasing isn’t a good thing so you should better pick up non-iron clothing that doesn’t crease easily. And this is something good since there is a lot of sitting and lying especially on long-haul flights.

Choose light and breathable fabrics . Don’t wear too much clothing since you will definitely feel warm on business class. But avoid also wearing clothing that shows too much skin as this is considered inappropriate to wear on business class.

What to wear on business flight?

Bringing a pair of slip-on shoes with you is a clever idea. You can wear them when passing through the security checkpoints and you can easily remove them once you are at the business class cabin.

What to wear on business flight?

Long-hour flights undoubtedly require comfort. So the best top to wear on business class flight is a cotton top with a loose structure . Our outfit  looks always smart when we add a piece made of high quality cotton. Oxford cotton shirt and cotton chinos are also great to wear on busness class.

Cotton tops are ideal for layering up and they can keep you warm in the cold and cool in the heat. This makes them universal type of airplane clothing.

Sweaters can be combined with different types of clothing and depending n the design they make a perfect business class attire. A good quality sweater can not only be comfortable for wearing but it also looks chick

If you are a fan of skirts, then you can wear it on business class. Just make sure isn’t too short. Maxi and midi skirts are suitable for wearing on business class.

Cardigans can be stylish too and you can wear this type of clothing  on business class flights.

Long jacket/coat/blazer

It’s wise to get a comfortable jacket with you as the air inside the airplane can get cold during night flights. A stylish coat/jacket makes any outfit complete and put together. Pick your favourite design coat with a length that goes past your knees to keep you warm and make you look sophisticated.

What to wear on business flight?

Another versatile wardrobe piece which can be combined with different types of clothing. It’s handy to have hood to put over your head when it gets cold in the business class cabin.

Cashmere scarf

Scarves made of cashmere wool (also called pashmina) offers both comfort and amazing style. They can spice up any look and are simply timeless. Bringing a pashmina on your business class flight will make you feel super cozy and warm during your travel and also make you look super trendy.

Tunic/Swing dress

Tunic dresses are amazing because they can worn literally everywhere and they are business class-friendly. Pick up simple style tunic dress in neutral colors for your business class flight.

When carefully picked  jewellery can brighten any type of outfit and you can express your own style wearing it. Adding an elegant bracelet or a necklace will make your look complete and business class ready.

Accessories

When it comes to wearing accessories on business class , don’t go overboard. A watch is a perfect accessory to wear on business class that offers style d convenience. It always attracts the attention and completes our outfit in a stylish way.

The best shoes for business class are these that you can easily slip off when you are passing through security. But they should be also stylish and make your whole outfit stand out . Ladies can add a bit of colo r and pick their shoes in a colorful design. Close-toed shoes are ideal footwear option for business class travel.

What to wear on business flight?

You can either pick up flats, boots, ankle boots, even leather sneakers if you want to add an urban vibe to your business class outfit. You can also choose pumps, if you like them and think you will feel fine wearing them for long hours.

In terms of colors, business class requires elegance, so you won’t go wrong with basic colors like black, white, beige . When it comes to color choice, you should choice pattered pants. That’s because if you spill a drink on yourself , this type of pants won’t show much the stains. And no one wants to have stains on them ,especially when traveling on business class.

Tips how to feel more comfortable during your long haul business class flight

Wear loose fitting pants.

What to wear on business flight?

  • Jeans seems a good casual but classic choice for business class but they can cause us discomfort if we wear them for long hours because of their tight fitting design
  • Elastic pants are a good choice for long haul flights as they allow freedom and offer comfort. You can sleep wearing these
  • Soft terry pants are amazing option to wear on business class. They provide you with the comfort you need to rest and sleep during your flight and they also combine stylish and sporty style
  • Jeggings are also a popular business class style option for women. Jeggings offer an amazing opportunity to look chick and still feel comfortable.

Flight compression socks

These socks don’t fall in the category of fashionable clothing, but they are safe for your health. Flight compression socks will protect you from getting deep vein thrombosis during long-haul flights.

They can also act as a barrier between your feet and all the bacteria that live on the airplane seats and floor in case if you want to rest your feet high in your lie-flat bed.

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

Many Americans are familiar with business trips, having taken nearly 250 million of them in 2021 alone. 1 If your job has you hustling and bustling around the country (or around the world), you probably know a thing or two about weaving through the airport while balancing your wallet, phone, and a cortado.

But if you need a few more fashion tips on how to pack business travel outfits into a carry-on suitcase, you’ve moving-walkway shuffled to the right place. The good news is that when you choose the right pieces, you can get at least six outfits out of one carry-on bag.

We’ll guide you through a few essential pieces to keep in your hanging closet. Then, we’ll show you six different looks using simple, versatile items that work just as well in the boardroom as they do in the window seat.

Defining Business Casual for Travel

The term “business casual” can feel quite broad, even without the “travel” modifier. Businesspeople of the past wore suits—period. But nowadays, outfit choices are almost unlimited, making it harder to decide what to pack for a business trip.

Plus, when packing for a business trip, a woman is often faced with more options than their male working counterparts, between dress shoes, jewelry, and accessories.

So, what is business casual for women ? Insider defines business casual attire as clothing that is professional, but relaxed. 2 “Relaxed” is an especially important word when traveling, because less access to your extended wardrobe means you’ll spend more time in the travel clothes you packed.

Overall, business casual travel outfits should be comfortable enough to wear all day, but polished enough to make your best professional impression.

Tips for Packing Work Travel Outfits

Not sure where to start with work travel outfits that impress and go the distance? Before flinging clothes from your closet off the hangers and all over your bed, we’ve got a few fashion tips for you.

To help organize your packing strategy, consider these 3 priorities:

  • Luggage space – If you’re limited to one carry-on, your packing space is valuable. To solve this problem, the key word is versatility. Pack items that can be worn multiple times, for multiple occasions, as part of different outfits. This becomes easier if you choose plenty of neutral tones.
  • The itinerary – Is there a party scheduled after the main conference? Are you meeting clients for dinner at an upscale steakhouse? Put together your one “special occasion” outfit and pack it once you have every part of it planned out to save time later on.
  • The weather forecast – If your destination is warm, you’re in luck. No packing bulky winter coats! But if your work takes you to Chicago in December or Oslo in January, you’ll need more luggage space for warmer items like your cute winter coat —or plan to wear them on the plane.

Essential Items for Business Casual Travel Outfits

Let’s get specific about exactly which clothing items you’ll need on your trip. For starters, you’ll probably want at least two or three office looks, and since you likely won’t be spending every second of your trip in the office, you’ll also need a few options for after-hours events and traveling.

Two Basic Tops

In two different colors (black and white work beautifully). For warmer locales, a simple tank like our Scoop Tank or Roll-sleeve Tie Top goes with everything and can be worn under jackets or cardigans. For sweater weather, try something with more coverage, like our Long Sleeve Turtleneck.

One Dressier Blouse

If there are any parties or after-work dinners on the agenda, be sure to pack something with a little extra flare. One option is a silky top like our Drape Cami or Tie-Front Blouse . A dressy blouse on the modest side can double as an office look under a blazer.

Two Versatile Pairs of Pants

The holy grail of business trip slacks is comfy and wrinkle-resistant, yet tailored and high-quality enough to wear in the office. Like your basic tops, you’ll likely want two color variations. We love our black Travel Pant and off-white Piper Pant.

A Pencil Skirt

Pencil skirts pull triple duty: formal, casual, and anywhere in between. Find one comfy enough to travel in, and you’ll get even more wear out of it. Black is ideal, but gray, camel, navy, or anything else that matches what’s in your suitcase. For an easy-to-wear piece that can survive a plane ride, we recommend our Travel Pencil Skirt.

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

Two Blazers

A staple of businesswear, you’ll need at least one or two blazers in your bag. Curious about how to style blazers ? A Houndstooth Blazer is classic, chic, and goes with both black and nude tones. For colder destinations, our Tweed Blazer doubles as an overcoat to keep you warm.

Soft, warm, and easy to transport, cardigans are an essential and versatile piece for traveling. They’re ideal for carrying in your backpack when you plan to explore the city during your time away from conferences or meetings. Our charcoal Shawl Cardigan is cozy enough to dine or sleep in (should you be taking a red-eye flight).

A Wrap Dress

The wrap dress practically defines versatility. Universally flattering, this basic can be dressed up or down for whatever occasion arises. It’s like the secret weapon of minimalist packing, and it’s even comfortable to wear. We’ll use our Cascade Wrap Dress for our list.

Simple Accessories

Your choice of accessories will depend on where you’re headed, but again, keep simplicity in mind so you can mix and match freely.

Consider options like:

  • Two pairs of earrings: one minimal, one statement
  • Two necklaces: one short, one long
  • A tote bag for carrying your phone and business cards
  • Two pairs of shoes: more casual flats and your most comfortable heels

Find a style that suits you and your travel attire in our collection .

6 Work Travel Outfits

Now that you have the essentials in mind, let’s talk about how to use them. Here are six business travel outfits that utilize those essentials to their fullest travel potential.

#1 Airport Chic

Our first travel outfit maximizes function without losing form. To create cute outfits for the airport , pair comfy, wrinkle-resistant bottoms like our stretch-knit Travel Pant with a basic top and cozy cardigan. Throw on a necklace to bring along a piece of jewelry without having to pack it. You’ll be flying in style.

Shop The Look:

  • Travel Pant
  • Scoop Tank or Long Sleeve Turtleneck
  • Shawl Cardigan
  • Beaded Long Mother of Pearl Necklace

#2 First Impressions

Our first work outfit couldn’t be simpler. A pencil skirt with one of your basic tops paired with a blazer makes a look that impresses without going overboard. Our recommended accessories? Kitten heel pumps and our Two Drop Mother of Pearl Earrings .

Shop The Look:

  • Trave l Pencil Skirt
  • Two Drop Mother of Pearl Earrings

#3 After Office Hours

For a formal dinner, holiday party, or any nighttime event, you can jazz up your simple outfits with a little bit of shine. Swap your basic top for the dressier one. Layer it under a blazer for more formal affairs. Balance out the shimmer of your top half with a simple black pencil skirt or pant, plus your favorite jewelry.

  • Sequin Duster
  • Travel Pant or Travel Pencil Skirt
  • Kenyan Iconoclast Hoop Earrings

#4 Charm & Handshakes

For our second work look, pair the off-white Piper Pant with a basic top and the Herringbone Coat. Too warm for a long coat? Swap it out with your second blazer. If your event allows, give your feet a break by wearing your flats.

  • Herringbone Coat or Blazer
  • Gemstone Teardrop Necklace

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

#5 Leisure Time

Whether it’s a work brunch or a sightseeing break, you’ll need at least one off-duty outfit for the daytime, too. For this look, pair your trusty Piper Pant with a nice top like the Drape Cami. For colder days, add the Herringbone Coat and a scarf. For sunny weather, try our Cascade Wrap Dress.

  • Herringbone Coat
  • Cascade Wrap Dress

#6 Smooth Transitions

Here’s a look you can wear straight from the office to the after-party. Throw on your wrap dress and kitten heels. During the workday, go for more minimal jewelry, and after hours you can up your glam with larger hoops and bangle bracelets. If you get cold, grab your Herringbone Coat and strut everywhere.

  • Large Hoop Earrings

Travel Outfits: How to Look Chic When You’re Flying

travel outfits

Listen—I’m all about rocking a cute travel outfit when I’m heading out of town…but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing heels to the airport.

To be honest, I don’t even like wearing jeans on a plane (although I’ll occasionally make an exception if they’re REALLY comfortable jeans , or if my flight is under three hours.)

Usually you’ll find me rocking a head-to-toe set of my favorite affordable cashmere during the winter, and a lightweight loungewear set during the summer.

I often see pictures of bloggers at the airport posing next to their cute pink luggage wearing like…wedges and a mini-dress. HARD PASS. How is that even comfortable? When you’re en route to the airport (and your final destination) it’s all about feeling comfortable.

For this reason, I decided to put together a little guide to cute travel outfits…featuring things that you’ll actually want to travel in , whether you’re heading out for a winter getaway or a girls trip .

Because believe it or not, it’s possible to rock comfy loungewear, leggings, or a jumpsuit and still look SUPER chic, as long as you style them properly (especially my favorite faux leather leggings .)

Below are a handful of great travel outfits I found while trolling IG—and the exact things you can buy to replicate them.

(Also: if you’re also on the hunt for stylish carry-on luggage or if you need some good go-to travel toiletries…I got you covered.)

Chic Travel Outfits

Travel Outfits

Here, I’m sharing a handful of my go-to travel outfit pieces. These are all items that I think you should have in your closet regardless of how often you go on a getaway, but they just so happen to be particularly comfy choices when going on a plane.

These picks will of course depend on how long your flight is and where you’re headed, but overall, I think they’re practical for travel days.

The only caveat here is that I know a jumpsuit isn’t exactly ideal if you’re going on a long-haul flight—however—I personally don’t mind wearing them on planes because they’re so comfy and not really that difficult to slip in and out of when you need a bathroom break.

If jumpsuits aren’t your jam, there are plenty of other ideas in this post that should work for you, like a cute matching sweatsuit or leggings and a leather jacket. Without further ado, here are the staples I’d recommend having on hand for travel days.

I do not think I would wear white on a plane. No to the belly sticking out as well. I do like the stretchy pants and sneakers.

Why would anyone wear a jumpsuit on a plane? The toilets are used by hundreds of people, now you want to pull down the top part of your clothes and have it dangling somewhere near the toilet, while you’re sitting on a toilet that exposes the part that gets wee on when the seat is up? Eeu that’s all kind of germ wrong!! But I do love the little 3/4 joggers! Def looking for some of those for my next long haul (when this pandemic is over!)

I. Understanding The Vibe Of A Business Class Flight

By grasping the essence of business class travel, you can fully embrace the advantages and tailor your clothing choices to complement the extraordinary adventure in the skies.

In business class, passengers are treated to a superior level of comfort and service, and their clothing should reflect this elevated experience.

Dressing appropriately for business class means selecting outfits that not only exude sophistication and professionalism but also prioritize comfort for long hours of travel.

Business class travelers should opt for breathable, wrinkle-resistant fabrics that allow unrestricted movement, ensuring they arrive at their destination looking polished and fresh.

The dress code often leans towards smart-casual or business formal attire, allowing travelers to showcase their sartorial prowess with tailored blazers, elegant blouses, and well-fitted trousers.

II. Dressing for Comfort

When embarking on any journey, dressing for comfort is a crucial consideration that should never be overlooked. This holds especially true for long-haul flights and business class travel, where maintaining ease and relaxation becomes paramount. Here are valuable tips on how to dress for comfort:

A. Choosing Breathable and Non-Restrictive Fabrics

Opt for breathable materials like cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking blends that allow air circulation and prevent you from feeling stuffy or sweaty during the flight.

Avoid tight-fitting clothing that might restrict movement, as this can become increasingly uncomfortable during long hours in the air. Instead, opt for loose and relaxed fits that allow for ease of movement and promote comfort during your entire travel experience.

B. Layering for Temperature Fluctuations

One of the challenges of air travel is dealing with fluctuating aircraft temperatures. Business class cabins often provide individual air vents, but it’s still essential to be prepared for varying conditions.

Layering is the key to staying comfortable in changing environments. Start with a lightweight base layer like a breathable t-shirt or camisole, and add on a long-sleeved shirt or sweater for extra warmth.

A scarf or shawl can serve as a versatile accessory that adds style to your outfit and provides warmth when needed.

C. Wearing Comfortable Footwear for Long-Haul Flights

Selecting the right footwear is vital for long-haul flights, as your feet can experience significant discomfort if not appropriately supported. Opt for shoes that provide ample cushioning and support to prevent fatigue and potential swelling.

Slip-on shoes or those with adjustable closures are ideal, as they allow you to easily take them off during the flight to stretch your feet or when going through airport security. Remember that your feet might slightly swell during the flight, so avoid tight-fitting shoes that could become uncomfortable as the journey progresses.

Investing in a comfortable pair of socks can also make a noticeable difference, providing additional comfort and warmth during the flight.

D. Dressing for Sleep and Relaxation

Long-haul business class flights often include overnight segments, making it essential to be prepared for rest and relaxation during the journey.

Consider wearing comfortable, loose-fitting sleepwear that allows your body to move freely while you rest. Opt for soft, breathable fabrics like cotton or modal that feel gentle against your skin.

Many airlines provide amenity kits with eye masks, earplugs, and moisturizers to enhance your in-flight sleep experience further. Before settling in for a nap:

  • Change into your sleepwear.
  • Slip on cozy socks.
  • Use the provided amenities to create a calming environment conducive to rest.

E. Staying Mindful of Airline Policies

Each airline may have a dress code for business class passengers, specifying acceptable attire for the premium cabin. While most airlines generally expect a level of formality in business class, some may have more stringent guidelines, particularly for specific routes or destinations.

Additionally, be aware of any restrictions on items you can carry onboard, such as liquids, gels, or sharp objects, which might impact your grooming and personal care products.

III. What to Wear on a Business Class Flight

Whether you’re a woman or a man, your choice of attire can significantly impact how you feel during the flight and how you’re perceived by fellow travelers.

In the following sections, we present curated outfit ideas tailored for both women and men, ensuring that you step onto that plane with confidence and elegance, while embracing the convenience that a well-chosen ensemble can bring.

A. Outfit Ideas For Female Travelers

For female travelers, selecting the perfect outfit that oozes professionalism, elegance, and comfort is paramount to making the most of this elevated experience.

Here, we present a curated collection of outfit ideas explicitly designed for women traveling in business class:

1. Classic Chic

Opt for a classic chic ensemble that exudes sophistication and professionalism for a timeless and polished look. Start with a pair of tailored black ankle-length trousers that elongate your silhouette and offer comfort during the flight.

Pair it with a crisp white button-down shirt, which adds a touch of elegance to the outfit—layer with an elegant black blazer that not only keeps you warm but also elevates your style.

Slip on a pair of pointed-toe black pumps for a refined touch and to complement the ensemble. Accessorize with a statement necklace and stud earrings, keeping the jewelry simple yet impactful.

Finally, complete the look with a structured black leather tote bag that perfectly balances fashion and functionality, ensuring you have everything you need for your business class journey.

2. Effortless Elegance

Embrace an effortless elegance with a sophisticated outfit that balances style and ease. Opt for a navy or charcoal knee-length sheath dress that offers both comfort and a polished look.

Layer with a lightweight longline cardigan or blazer in a complementary color, providing an extra layer of warmth during the flight. Slip on nude or beige ballet flats or loafers for comfort without compromising style.

Add delicate jewelry like a dainty necklace and simple stud earrings to accentuate the outfit without overwhelming it. A leather crossbody bag in a complementary color is a practical choice for keeping your essentials close at hand while traveling in business class.

3. Timeless Sophistication

Achieve a timeless, sophisticated look with a classic outfit that never goes out of style. Start with a pencil skirt in a classic print like pinstripes or houndstooth, bringing an element of elegance to your ensemble.

Pair it with a silk or satin blouse in a coordinating color, exuding sophistication and refinement. Layer with a trench coat or longline coat in a neutral tone to stay warm and stylish during your journey.

Slip on nude or black heeled pumps for a touch of glamor and to elongate your legs. Complete the outfit with a structured leather handbag in a rich color, adding a luxurious finishing touch to your business-class attire.

4. Relaxed and Stylish

Embrace a relaxed yet stylish look for your business-class travel, striking the perfect balance between comfort and fashion. Opt for flowy wide-leg trousers in a subtle print, offering ease of movement and a chic appearance.

Pair them with a soft, draped blouse or tunic for a comfortable yet polished look. Layer with a tailored denim or leather jacket to add a touch of edginess and personality to the outfit.

Slip on comfortable loafers or low-heeled ankle boots that allow you to move freely during your journey. Accessorize with oversized sunglasses and carry a trendy tote bag to complete this stylish ensemble.

5. Modern Power Suit

Make a bold statement with a modern power suit that exudes confidence and authority. Opt for a matching pantsuit or skirt suit in a striking color like royal blue or emerald green, showcasing your style and power.

Pair it with a crisp white or cream blouse with a statement collar, adding a touch of sophistication to the outfit. Slip on pointed-toe pumps in a complementary hue to elongate your legs and create a seamless, polished appearance.

Keep the jewelry minimalistic with gold or silver pieces that add a subtle sparkle. Finally, complete the ensemble with a sleek leather briefcase or structured handbag that complements your powerful and stylish business class look.

B. Outfit Ideas For Male Travelers

As a male traveler, finding the perfect outfit for a business-class flight is an art that combines style, comfort, and sophistication.

From classic business elegance to smart casual chic, here are some outfits that strike the ideal balance between professionalism and relaxation, making your journey as enjoyable as your destination:

1. Classic Business Elegance

When traveling in business class, exude an air of timeless sophistication with a classic business elegance outfit. Start with a well-fitted navy or charcoal tailored suit that instantly elevates your appearance.

Pair it with a crisp white dress shirt for a clean and professional look. Add a touch of personality with a complementary tie in a subtle pattern or solid color. Slip on polished leather dress shoes in either black or brown to complete the refined ensemble.

Accessorize with a timeless wristwatch that adds a hint of luxury to your look. Finally, carry a leather briefcase or a sophisticated laptop bag to keep your essentials organized and make a lasting impression from the moment you step on the plane.

2. Smart Casual Chic

For a smart and stylish look with a touch of comfort, opt for a smart casual chic outfit. Choose dark-colored dress trousers or chinos that offer both sophistication and ease of movement.

Pair them with a light-colored dress shirt or a collared polo shirt for a relaxed yet put-together appearance. Layer with a lightweight V-neck sweater or cardigan, providing warmth and style during your flight. Slip on brown leather loafers or suede chukka boots, striking the right balance between comfort and elegance.

Complete the ensemble with a sleek leather belt to add a polished finishing touch. Carry a stylish travel backpack or a leather messenger bag, ensuring you have all your travel essentials at hand while maintaining a fashionable look.

3. Relaxed Travel Comfort

Achieve a look of relaxed travel comfort without compromising style during your business class journey. Start with tailored dark wash jeans or chinos that offer comfort without sacrificing refinement.

Pair them with a crisp button-down shirt or a well-fitted polo shirt, showcasing a laid-back yet presentable appearance. Layer with a lightweight blazer or a casual sports jacket for a touch of sophistication. Slip on comfortable leather slip-on shoes or clean sneakers, providing ease during airport security checks and long flights.

Add a classic pair of aviator sunglasses for a cool and trendy element. Carry compact and versatile carry-on luggage, ensuring you have everything you need without feeling weighed down.

IV. What not to Wear on a Business Class Flight

When flying in business class, presenting yourself with sophistication and style is essential to match the premium experience. However, to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience, it’s equally essential to know what not to wear during this premium journey.

So, below is the list of things you should avoid wearing on a business-class flight:

A. Casual Loungewear

Avoid wearing casual loungewear, such as pajamas and sleepwear, as they are meant for relaxing at home, not for a business-class flight. Sweatsuits and jogging bottoms should also be avoided, as they may give off an overly casual and unkempt appearance.

Additionally, steer clear of graphic t-shirts and hoodies, as they may not align with the professional and sophisticated ambiance of business class.

B. Overly Revealing or Casual Attire

Refrain from wearing overly revealing or casual clothing, like shorts and flip-flops, as they might not suit the refined atmosphere of business class.

Tank tops and sleeveless shirts are best left for more casual settings. Likewise, beachwear or swimwear should be avoided, as it is inappropriate for the airplane environment.

C. Worn-Out or Shabby Clothing

Opt for well-maintained attire and avoid wearing worn-out or shabby items like ripped or torn jeans, faded and stained shirts, and frayed or damaged shoes.

Presenting yourself in well-kept garments adds to the overall polished and professional appearance expected in business class.

D. Heavy and Bulky Outfits

Avoid wearing heavy and bulky outfits, especially oversized coats and jackets, which might be inconvenient during the flight. Similarly, bulky winter boots may be difficult to remove during security checks or when settling into your seat. Opt for more streamlined clothing choices to ensure comfort and ease of movement.

E. Strongly Scented Fragrances

Be considerate of other passengers by avoiding heavily scented fragrances. Opt for subtle or fragrance-free products to prevent overwhelming the confined cabin space with strong odors from perfumes, colognes, body sprays, and scented lotions.

Final Thoughts

Dressing appropriately for a business class flight is not just about looking good; it enhances your entire travel experience. The careful selection of outfits ensures that you can fully enjoy the luxurious amenities and services of flying in business class.

By following the tips and outfit ideas provided for both female and male travelers, you can embark on your business class adventure with the assurance that you are prepared to make the most of this premium travel experience.

Embrace the elegance, comfort, and convenience of business class travel, and let your impeccable attire reflect the remarkable journey that awaits you. Bon voyage!

A Travel Editor's Best Travel Outfits for Long Flights

@sophiemiura / Instagram

There's a certain art to building the perfect travel outfit. Last year, I spent 203 hours on airplanes jetting from New York to Tahiti, Australia, Finland, Japan, and more as part of my job as an editor and travel writer. When I'm not reviewing new hotels and airlines for work, I try to squeeze in the odd trip to explore under-the-radar vacation spots at my own pace. So trust me when I say, I've had enough practice refining the best travel outfits for long flights.

I have two rules when it comes to dressing for a long-haul flight : It has to be comfortable and something I wouldn't mind being seen in if I bumped into a coworker. With that in mind, I think I've found the best travel outfit formula. Here are the exact items I mix and match on a flight, depending on my mood and the destination. Every item ticks the boxes: They're incredibly well made, stretch, don't rub, are casually stylish, and stand up to the rigors of flight after flight.

Keep scrolling for my must-have travel and airport outfit essentials—accessories included—for the next time you take to the skies.

Holdall Duffle

This is my go-to carry-on for weekend trips. I love the leather straps, waterproof material, and the fact that I'm never asked to check it in if the overhead bins are full. Made out of 14 upcycled plastic water bottles and natural cotton, it gets bonus points for being eco-friendly too.

Durable Carry-On

A recent trip to L.A. revealed that the entire MyDomaine team swears by Away luggage . The carry-on features a hidden laundry bag, not to mention, the hard shell means I never think twice about bringing a bottle of wine back from vacation.

Enclosed Lace-Up Shoes

I prefer to wear these Thousand Fell sneakers if I'm traveling for work and want to look a bit more polished. Lace-up sneakers are a must at airports: I can loosen the laces when my feet swell midair and don't feel gross in socks when I have to take them off to pass through security.

Leather Jacket

I always travel with a leather jacket because it makes my outfit look cool and styled, even if I'm wearing sneakers and leggings. This jacket by Topshop has been on my wishlist for months.

Loose-Fitting Top

We all love Madewell's relaxed basics for traveling. This scoop-neck T-shirt is loose and layers well with a leather jacket and cardigan. The price tag might sound steep for a basic tee but the supersoft Peruvian Pima cotton is worth the splurge.

No-Frills Leggings

These shape-sculpting leggings are my travelwear go-to. They are comfy, silky soft, and have a flattering high waist. Best of all, the fabric is quick-drying, which comes in handy when you spill a drink due to unexpected turbulence—or maybe just clumsiness.

Black Jeans

I prefer to wear leggings, but if I'm lucky enough to be flying in business class, I try to look a bit more presentable. Topshop's Jamie jeans are the only ones I wear on a flight. They have so much stretch and a high waistband that's comfortable even if I feel bloated midair.

Quality Headphones

Screaming babies, loud talkers, and a plane's white noise are no match for these B&O Play over-ear headphones. Not only do they muffle noisy passengers and vessels so that I can enjoy my in-flight entertainment in peace, but they look super stylish while doing so. I don't fly without them.

Opt for noise-cancelling headphones to ensure a stress-free flight.

Parachute's Merino Travel Kit makes coach feel like first class. I find the warm blanket makes it easier to get quality sleep on a flight and sometimes wrap it around myself like a scarf when the cabin is cold. Plus, it comes in a zip-up wool bag that is the perfect travel pillowcase.

Waterproof Tote

I've had this Longchamp tote for over five years, and it's lasted countless flights and adventures. The waterproof outer casing means that the contents are protected from any spills, and it folds up into a flat package to be stored in my luggage when I arrive at the destination.

Personal Handbag

This is the perfect crossbody bag for travel: It's small, but still fits a phone and passport, zips up for safety, is made from durable leather, and can be monogrammed so you'll never mix it up with a stranger's bag.

Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

You may have a designated travel sweatshirt or a favorite pair of shoes to wear on flights — but what about other essentials, like pants, jackets, T-shirts, dresses, and pajamas? If you prioritize comfort in transit, it’s time to revamp your travel wardrobe to ensure every trip is a cozy one. Lucky for you, we editors at Travel + Leisure rounded up a few of our favorite comfy clothing items we always wear on the road and in the sky.

From impossibly soft lounge sets to what we believe are the world’s comfiest jeans, we've combed our closets for those few items we tend to wear every time we travel. Our list includes favorites from Lululemon, Patagonia, Lilly Pulitzer, and more, so whether you prefer to travel in loose-fitting loungewear or more compressive clothing, you’re sure to find something you love below.

lululemon Define Jacket Luon

We’ve all been on a flight that’s chilly enough for some extra layers but too warm for a heavy coat or sweatshirt. That’s why we always pack this comfy, light jacket in our carry-on. Not only is it incredibly sleek and stylish thanks to its slim fit, but it’s also super soft, stretchy, breathable, and easy to move in. The sleeves even feature thumbholes and “cuffins” (cuffs that can be folded over your hands) for added warmth. Snag the Define Jacket Luon in eight sizes and five shades including espresso and bone.

“This jacket is essentially my plane uniform — I wear it every single time I fly,” editor Sophie Mendel said. “It's comfy but keeps me looking put-together, plus I can wear it with leggings and sneakers for a super functional, comfortable, and cute transit 'fit. It also has two zippered pockets which are extra-convenient during travel.”

Calia Women's Inspire High Rise 7/8 Legging

Dick's Sporting Goods

Flying in compression leggings is wise, especially for long-haul flights, but some compression leggings tend to squeeze you uncomfortably. That’s never a problem with Calia’s Inspire High Rise 7/8 leggings, though. Boasting subtle compression that molds to your body, the leggings are sure to remain comfy and breathable without sliding down or sagging. They even have unique seam lines that strategically accentuate your curves — though, admittedly,  this is more noticeable in some colors than others. To top it off, we love the way they feel to the touch.

“These Calia leggings are without a doubt the softest pair I own,” associate editor Hillary Maglin said. “I've worn them for everything from yoga classes to grocery runs to a recent 12-hour travel day, and I've remained comfy through it all. The leggings are thick without hindering mobility, and they're compressive without digging into my stomach (something I can't stand). It also doesn't hurt that they have subtle side pockets large enough for my phone. Though I have plenty of black leggings in my wardrobe, I find myself reaching for these ones again and again.”

Commes Des Garçons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor Hidden Heart Low Top Sneakers

It's true: Converse never goes out of style. Conveniently, the sleek sneakers tend to last forever, too, so consider copping a pair of the Converse x Comme des Garçons Play Chuck 70s. They feature the typical silhouette of the brand’s low tops, plus they come in white or black. No matter which color you choose, this particular style also boasts the Comme des Garçons red heart and eyes logo on the side. You can snag these in women’s sizes 5 to 15 and men’s sizes 3 to 13.

“This is my go-to travel shoe because it's comfortable but also dressy enough that I can wear it throughout my trip when I want an elevated sneaker look,” travel editor Susmita Baral said.

Paka Men's Apu Lightweight Puffer

One of our most important tips for traveling in comfort? Dress to avoid freezing or overheating. With this lightweight men’s puffer from Paka, regulating your body temperature is easy. It’s so slim that it looks more like a hoodie than a puffer, but its hidden layers and insulation efficiently lock in warmth. Even if you choose not to wear it in transit, you can effortlessly pack it down into a bag or suitcase.

“This puffer jacket has the warmth of a parka but not the bulkiness, which makes it the perfect outerwear to bring while traveling,” writer Anna Popp said. “It can fit in a suitcase easily and it's also perfectly cozy and warm to wear on an airplane if you need to save extra space. I love that it looks nice while going out in the city on a snowy day, but that it’s also designed to be worn for sportier occasions like skiing, hiking, climbing, or running.”

J.McLaughlin Lowden Jeans

J.McLaughlin

We know, we know — traveling in jeans might as well be a crime. We thought so, too, until we got our hands on J.McLaughlin’s Lowden jeans. The stretchy cotton denim feels more like a soft pair of leggings, and even after long-haul flights, we never felt restricted or uncomfortable in them. The jeans feature a wide-leg slim fit for added mobility and a high waist for comfort and confidence on and off the plane.

“I never thought I would be a jeans person for airplanes but after wearing these on a cross-country flight, I'm a big fan now,” said Popp. “These jeans are super stretchy and roomy, so if (and when) I get bloated while traveling, the high-waist fabric doesn't dig into my stomach or cause me any discomfort. They also look super cute and stylish and can be styled with many different outfits, so I’ve officially added these jeans to my travel wardrobe for every trip.”

Patagonia Women's Nano Puff Jacket

We’re adamant that Patagonia’s Nano Puff is the jacket every traveling woman needs in her wardrobe. It’s lightweight, packable, durable, stylish, warm, windproof, water-resistant — need we go on? Some of our favorite extras are a drawstring hemline to seal in heat and hidden internal pockets. On top of all its functional features, it also comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL and 11 colors including buckhorn green, chilled blue, and sandy melon.

“When it comes to packable jackets for women, this one from Patagonia is the best option for virtually any trip,” Popp said. “The design is simple but very functional, and I love being able to wear it for any season. In the winter, it's thin enough to layer for more warmth, but I can wear it as-is during summer camping trips. My outdoor-adventuring family all own Nano puff jackets and they still look as good as new, so I love that they’re built to last – possibly forever – in my opinion.”

Rag & Bone Miramar Jogger

Rag & Bone

These joggers are so stylish, you’d never guess they’re also comfy as can be. Don’t let their denim appearance fool you — they’re actually made of soft cotton terry that provides stellar mobility and comfort. Over the legging look for travel? Throw these on instead, and pair them with a pair of boots or walking shoes and moto jacket for an effortlessly cool look you don’t even have to change out of once you reach your destination.

“These Rag & Bone joggers are simply the best for travel,” editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford said. “I call them ‘faux’ jeans; the fabric looks like it’s a regular old pair of denim, but surprise — they have the softness and ease of a pair of sweats. Ideal for a plane ride or even a long day out on a tour, these are the ultimate pants that blend function, form, and style.”

Forme Power Bra

In need of a comfy new sports bra to keep everything in place on your next journey? Our editors (and a certain blonde popstar) are all about the Forme Power Bra. It’s comfy, cute, compressive, and most impressively, designed to zap bad posture. The wide straps take pressure off your shoulders and back, while the comfortable fit promotes proper body alignment, quick recovery, and overall health. We even love all seven colors it comes in — especially rosé and ecru.

"As a bra-needer and someone who really shouldn't be traveling without one, I absolutely hate wearing something bulky while I fly,” associate photo editor Alessandra Amodio said. “My go-to is the Forme Power Bra. Not only is it incredibly comfortable and made of high-quality material, but it’s actually FDA-registered to correct posture and improve your body alignment. Now I fly comfortably and my neck, shoulders and back feel so much better. I just throw on a cute open button down, pair it with the Ergo Shorts or Sculpt+ Leggings , and look chic and put-together while traveling. (This is also what Taylor Swift wore in her Eras Tour rehearsals according to a photo from her Time Person of the Year profile — if it's good enough for Taylor, it's good enough for me.)”

Circus by Sam Edelman Zuri Strap Ballet Flat

Circus by Sam Edelman

We love that ballet flats are back — and this strappy style demands to be worn. The low heel and soft interior make them a great, pain-free option for travel while cross straps, buckles, and tiny beaded bows keep things stylish. They come in 11 sizes including half sizes, and 15 unique colors and prints. We recommend the shades dark French macaroon, light wash, and the leopard-printed beige brown.

“Even though you’d think flats would always be a comfortable shoe option, it’s actually surprisingly difficult to find flats that don’t dig into your feet or make your toes all sweaty,” testing editor Jackie Cucco said. “I’ve tried so many pairs that seem comfortable at first, but end up being too rigid and irritating by the end of the day. This is the first pair I’ve found that is soft enough to wear all day long, either with or without socks or tights. They feel like slippers, and they come in more than a dozen colors to match any vibe.”

Black Diamond Notion Pants

Black Diamond

Whether you’re headed to the airport, the trails, or even the gym, the Black Diamond men’s Notion Pants are your best bet for comfort and mobility. Designed with an elastic waist, a drawstring cord, and a loose fit, these pants feel almost like wearing your favorite pair of sweatpants. However, their slim appearance complete with two hand pockets and two rear pockets make them dapper enough to wear to dinner, a show, or even the office. Grab them in a neutral hue like ash or tundra, or opt for a more eye-catching shade like raging sea or burnt Sienna.

“You don't have to be an Alex Honnold–level rock climber to love these super-soft pants,” news director Paul Brady said. “They're comfortable enough for long-haul flights, even in coach, but they've still got a crisp silhouette to keep you looking put-together.”

Lilly Pulitzer Seaview Top & Deri Palazzo Pant Linen Set

Lilly Pulitzer

You can’t go wrong with Lilly Pulitzer, especially when it comes to jetsetting. This breathable, lightweight linen set from the brand is just as soft and cozy as it is cute, so we recommend adding it to your travel wardrobe immediately. The classic, collared button-down is super versatile thanks to cuffable sleeves and a tieable bottom — plus you can turn it into a jacket or cover-up by layering it unbuttoned over literally any other outfit. Snag the ultra-flattering matching pants to complete the look.

“I think the most versatile item to pack on a warm-weather vacay is a white linen button down, and this roomy one from Lilly Pulitzer is good enough to also grab in other colors like spearmint and mulberry,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “I’ve worn it unbuttoned over a swimsuit and then slipped on matching palazzo pants — with an irresistible elasticized waist — for dinner alfresco. I personally love the all-white combo for warmer climates but the New Yorker in me would also recommend grabbing the coordinating onyx x onyx set if you can catch it in stock.”

Spanx AirEssentials Wide Leg Pant

There are few things softer than Spanx Air Essentials’ Wide Leg Pants. They feel similar to the brand's sleek and smoothing leggings and shapewear, but they have a relaxed fit rather than a super compressive one. While the pants could certainly be worn as loungewear, they’re also fashionable enough to wear to the airport, a coffee shop, or on an errand run. Though they fit and even look a bit like sweatpants, figure-enhancing contouring on the rear differentiates them from your typical comfy clothing.

“It’s impossible to find a better material than Spanx AirEssentials ,” Parker said. “All pieces feel silky to the touch, hefty enough for a chilly plane cabin, and pretty much impossible to wrinkle. I’m super into wide-leg styles — and need this exact petite option for my 5' 3" frame — and these pants are pretty much a given on my long flights nowadays. Personally, I love the olive-y palm color as an alternative to black or navy, so my only real choice is whether to match them with a crew neck or a sleek half zip instead.”

Pitusa Pima Abaya

If your ideal wardrobe staple is a do-it-all piece, look no further than Pitusa’s Pima Abaya. The cozy caftan is perfect for everything from international flights to pool days to bedtime. That’s thanks to impossibly soft cotton construction, oversized sleeves, and an airy, relaxed fit. There are no buttons, snaps, or drawstrings on this piece, so you’ll never have to worry about uncomfortable digging or fussing with it in order for it to fit right. You can customize your fit upon buying, though, and you can even choose from 15 colors.

“I joke about my ideal wardrobe consisting of a caftan in every color and this floor-length maxi fits perfectly into that vibe,” Parker said. “It can serve as a dress, cover-up, nightgown — pretty much anything, all day, every day in a tropical climate. The lightweight pima cotton is incredibly soft, too, and it comes in petite, standard, and tall options to reduce tailoring needs. I like this exact one because it’s not so sheer that I wouldn’t wear it out to dinner or on the plane but if you’re looking for more of a peekaboo style, you can get the same cut in a burnout fabric instead.”

Mar Soreli Ginger Mary Jane

Mar Soreli

Looking to travel in comfort without sacrificing style? Check out the Ginger Mary Janes by Mar Soreli. Everything from the insole to the strap is ultra-soft and cushioned, plus the buckle and strap are easy to tighten and loosen for a custom fit — or for quickly taking on and off at TSA. They’re even soft to the touch thanks to velvet uppers, and they’re versatile enough to wear with leggings, skirts, dresses, and jeans.

“If you’re someone who wishes slippers were appropriate outdoor shoes, these ballet flats are the next best thing,” Parker said. “The velvet is so cozy but still looks great with anything from plane leggings to a nicer skirt on a night out, with or without socks or tights. And, if you do want to wear them through security (and don’t have TSA PreCheck®), each strap actually has a snap in addition to the buckle adjustment so they’re incredibly quick to slip on and off as needed.”

Allbirds Wool Runners

Allbirds shoes were basically made for travel, and the Men’s Wool Runners are some of our absolute favorites. The inside is actually lined with fine merino wool, making for soft and warm-yet-breathable wear no matter the time of the year. On top of that, the sneakers are equipped with reliable arch support and machine washable fabric. While we wouldn’t recommend them for running, they’re the perfect comfy shoes for pretty much everything else, including walking, hiking, and navigating the airport.

“My husband swears by these comfortable men's walking shoes so much that I ordered a pair of the women's version for myself,” senior editor Kayla Becker said. “And they really deliver. We both love the thick, foamy cushion that keeps our feet supported on long travel days, and they've stood up to everything from 20,000-step jaunts in Iceland to hiking Diamond Head in Hawaii.”

Aday Turn It Up Pants

Tapered trousers are office staples — so if you’re traveling for business, we suggest adding a pair or two of the Aday Turn It Up Pants to your wardrobe. They’re the goes-with-everything piece you’ve been looking for, and their soft, tailored stretch paired with an elastic waistband makes them comfy enough to catch a flight in. The ankle-length pants have a pocket at each hip and are available in a dozen colors.

“As soon as I found these sleek, wrinkle-free travel pants, they became a permanent part of my travel uniform (and I've even written about how all the travel editors I know have them ),” Becker said. “They're not only super comfortable for long-haul flights (I just flew 14 hours in them and felt like I was wearing pajamas), but they also look put-together right off the plane, whether I'm headed to the office or a walking tour. I'd wear them literally anywhere.”

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

If you’re the type of traveler that likes to workout on the road, Saucony’s Endorphin Speed 4 is the versatile sneaker for you. Not only is it an ideal comfy running shoe, but it’s also lightweight and sleek enough to wear for every other part of your journey, too. Whether you wear it on the plane or to sightsee once you arrive at your destination, you’ll always feel supported in the Speed 4. Choose from five eye-catching colorways and 15 sizes including half-sizes.

“I've been training for the London Marathon, and since I started wearing these sneakers, I haven't had a single ounce of pain in my feet, even on long runs,” senior editorial director Nina Ruggiero said. “They are extremely cushioned yet so lightweight. Even after the race is done, I imagine I might be wearing them on the long flight home to LA.”

Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie

Fundamental Coast

To make the most of the space in your suitcase, you’ll want to prioritize versatile pieces that can do it all. That’s why we love the Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie so much. It’s perfect for travel days and morning walks near your hotel, but it’s also elevated enough to wear to a cafe, museum, or shops around town. The pullover hoodie has a front pocket, drawstring hood, and slim fit for a more put-together appearance. Grab it in phantom black or storm, which both have a beachy, heathered texture.

“Fundamental Coast has perfected Southern California athleisure, especially for men, and my fiancé lives in the brand's hoodies, shorts, vests, and polos,” Ruggiero said. “The Shorebreak hoodie is especially soft and sleek and works well whether we're out doing something active or going to brunch at a new spot in our beachy LA neighborhood.”

Vuori Cove Funnel Neck Tank

Vuori

This high-necked tank top is so stylish, you’d never guess it’s also comfy enough for exercise, stretching out on a plane, or even napping. Crafted with a soft and stretchy rayon-elastane fabric blend, this top never digs into the skin or feels uncomfortably tight around the neck. While it’s not quite cropped, it’s not too long, either, so it’s likely to complement a variety of bodies and ensembles.

“This super-soft rib knit tank is my go-to running top, but the high neck also gives it some style (in addition to protecting my most sensitive areas from the sun),” Ruggiero said. “I have it in multiple colors, and I've definitely worn the black and tan ones out with friends at night, too.”

Vuori Echo Insulated Vest

Vuori

A reliable vest is essential for travelers — it locks in warmth without causing you to overheat, and it couldn’t be easier to zip on and off. We’re big fans of this one from Vuori for its insulation, water resistance, and easy cleaning. It has zip pockets for your hands or small items, and a subtle collar keeps heat from escaping while allowing your neck total range of motion, irritation-free. To top it off, the vest comes in two stylish shades.

“This lightweight but warm insulated vest has quickly become one of my fiancé's favorite items of clothing,” Ruggiero said. “He wears it on dog walks, weekends, and travel days — it even has pockets.”

Reef Men's Swellsole Cutback Sneaker

It’s no secret that Reef is one of the most trusted rugged shoe brands around, so when it released boat shoes, we were intrigued. It turns out Reef’s boat shoes are just as comfy and long-lasting as the sandals we know and love. The men’s Swellsole Cutback Sneakers are the perfect fusion of classic boat shoes and cushioned sneakers, and they’re perfect for beachy vacations. Wear them from the dock straight to dinner — then keep them on for a busy night of exploring the boardwalk.

“I always thought of Reef for flip-flops, but since my fiancé found their hybrid boat shoes/sneakers, he's bought them in at least three colors,” Ruggiero said. “They're supportive thanks to memory foam, and can be dressed up or down.”

Public Rec All Day Pants

Odds are, you’ve seen these popular pants everywhere from the office to the coffee shop to the airport. That’s because their straight-leg fit and stretchy nylon-spandex fabric move with you rather than tightly confining your waist and legs like other styles. But don’t let their uber-soft texture fool you — these pants are still equipped with two front pockets, two faux back pockets, belt loops, and a zipper fly, so you’ll look and feel just as sophisticated as you are comfortable when you wear these.

“The slacks feel almost like loungewear thanks to their soft nylon-spandex blend,” editor Taylor Fox said. “They're the perfect balance of comfort and style for long flights where you don't want to feel cramped into tight pants, but want to still look put-together when you land. They can also be dressed up or dressed down for added versatility no matter what you have on the agenda.”

ManMade Boxers and T-shirt Bundle

ManMade Brand

One can never have too many basics, and we love this three-piece pack from ManMade. Each set comes with two pairs of black boxer briefs and one white T-shirt. Made of high-quality modal, spandex, and Pima cotton, the briefs and tee are guaranteed to remain soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and anti-chafing through everything — even long-haul flights and airport sprints. To ensure your comfort, the bundle comes in six sizes ranging from small to 3XL.

“My husband packs about a dozen pairs of boxers and undershirts for a weeklong trip and his absolute favorites come from ManMade,” Fox said. “They're lightweight and breathable with a buttery soft material that doesn't add a bulky layer under clothing. All of their items contain the perfect amount of stretch as well without allowing the clothing to ride up or bunch in uncomfortable places whether he's hiking, riding his bike, or preparing for a long flight.”

The Mate Organic Waffle Knit Joggers

There’s something so luxurious about a good waffle weave. Designed with a relaxed fit and buttery soft texture, these Organic Waffle Knit Joggers by Mate are no exception. They’re made of 100 percent organic cotton, crafted with elastic at the waist and ankles, and equipped with one pocket on the back right side. The cozy joggers come in four neutral colors (jet black, bone, lilac, and bark) and five sizes. You can also drop the matching Organic Waffle Long Sleeve Shirt in your cart to complete the look.

“If I could replace all of my joggers with these comfortable, waffle-knit pants I would,” writer Ali Domrongchai said. “They have the perfect amount of stretch that lends itself well to long travel days, and thanks to its textured design, they not only feel good, but look good, too. In fact, since I've been wearing these cozy knit joggers, a few of my friends have snagged a pair as well because of how much I rave about them.”

Tips for Buying Comfortable Travel Clothes

Consider the material.

When traveling, it’s important to choose clothing that’s as comfortable and low-maintenance as possible. That said, we recommend clothes made of soft, sweat-wicking, and breathable fabrics such as cotton, polyester, linen, or wool. It’s also wise to opt for wrinkle-resistant materials like nylon and spandex to keep you looking fresh and put-together.

Look for travel features

Though it may feel unnecessary, we guarantee you’ll end up thanking yourself for buying pants, dresses, and bags with lots of extra pockets. Additionally, temperature-regulating clothes can come in pretty handy when you’re on the road — so consider adding clothing with cooling capabilities (or just clothes made of linen, nylon, or polyester) to your travel wardrobe.

The most breathable clothing is made of materials like cotton, linen, nylon, polyester, merino wool, and silk. Though fabrics like spandex, fleece, and denim have plenty of benefits, they’re not quite as breathable.

Generally soft, stretchy, and loose-fitting clothing is best for travel, as it’ll keep you comfy and won’t feel restrictive on long flights or drives. Some people may also opt for compressive clothing, like leggings or compression socks, which helps promote circulation on long travel days. You may also want to choose clothing you know to be breathable so you don’t overheat.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

For this article, associate commerce editor Hillary Maglin collaborated with other members of the T+L team to conclude which clothing that we’ve personally used is the most comfortable for travel days. Hillary travels by plane and car several times a year and is obsessed with soft and slouchy pieces to keep her comfy on her journeys.

What to Wear on a Long Flight: Comfortable Essentials From Everlane, Lunya, and More

By Andrea Cheng and Madison Flager

Let's face it: When you’re about to embark on a six-plus-hour intercontinental flight and your body is buzzing with anxiety at the thought of potential delays, missed connections, and lost luggage, piecing together a stylish outfit is probably the least of your concerns. Factor in the near-impossible feat of sleeping upright on a plane and tolerating snoring seat mates, and it feels necessary to prioritize comfort on long-haul flights.

While matching sweatsuits are one (beloved) way to go, there are plenty of options in the way of loungewear these days. Pieces made of finely woven knits that feel as soft as a cloud, compression fabrics that prevent swelling, and buttery cashmere travel blankets that you can cocoon yourself in are among the ones we recommend for overnight or otherwise lengthy flights. Below, find 18 brands whose clothes and accessories will make deciding what to wear on a long flight as easy and comfortable as possible, broken down by categories:

  • Performance wear

Loungewear sets

Cashmere and wool basics, elevated basics, plane to office clothing.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Performance wear and athleisure

Lululemon is a perennial favorite for basic black leggings , snag-one-when-you-can belt bags , and comfortable joggers . But don't overlook the brand's tops: Pieces like this oversized cropped crew and the cotton half-zip shown below are made with soft, breathable fabrics that'll keep you feeling good from plane to car to hotel.

travel outfits for business class

Huckberry serves up menswear basics made for the active traveler, including soft yoga joggers and water-resistant workwear-inspired pants that will take you from the plane to a bike ride or beachside stretch session with ease. The brand's bestsellers section is full of pieces you can wear in the air and repeat on vacation, like the 72-Hour Merino T-shirt and The 365 Pant. You can find travel and outdoor gear from brands like Patagonia, Barbour, Marine Layer, and Saturdays NYC on Huckberry's site, too.

You may have heard the Vuori pitch before (the brand is an active podcast sponsor for many popular shows like Smartless and Crime Junkie ): It offers premium performance apparel inspired by the active coastal California lifestyle, and wants to offer a new perspective on the athleisure category as a whole. I admit, the clothing is some of the softest I've ever worn, which certainly sets itself apart from more traditional activewear brands like Nike or Adidas. Try Vuori's joggers, shorts, and super-soft tees for an outfit that feels like pajamas, but looks respectable enough for the airport lounge .

Outdoor Voices

When warm weather is in the forecast, the exercise dress comes back out. Often designed with shorts underneath and a built-in bra, the practical, sweat-wicking one-pieces are a great multi-purpose vacation outfit: Wear one on the plane with a jean jacket layered on top, then break it out again for a pickleball game or afternoon walking around to see the sights. Outdoor Voices makes a comfortable one with adjustable straps and a built-in shorts liner. If a dress doesn't sound appealing, opt for the Zephyr pant—it's made of a lightweight performance fabric that will serve you well in warm destinations. Of course, the brand's classic leggings are a great in-flight option, too.

Image may contain: Clothing, Tank Top, Dress, and Vest

If the only thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Spanx is shapewear, you're missing out. The brand has extended its offerings over the years to include everything from work dresses to jeans and blazers. But for long-haul flights, we're partial to the AirEssentials collection, which has a super-soft, drapey, scuba-like fabric. Shop The Travel Edit for even more style options, including shorts and jumpsuits.

If it's good enough for Oprah, it's got our vote. Cozy Earth's bamboo joggers received the media mogul's official seal of approval in 2020, by way of her Favorite Things list, and after trying them on ourselves, we understand why. The mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and Spandex produces a super smooth, cool-to-the-touch fabric that'll make you feel like you're wrapped in your favorite set of sheets. The brand's Stretch-Knit Bamboo Lounge tee and Ultra-Soft Bamboo hoodie are among other bestsellers.

Any physician will tell you that sitting in the same position for long periods of time is bad for you: It limits blood circulation, causes swelling, and increases the risk for blood clots. Movement around the cabin helps keep your blood moving, as does wearing the right garments. Sleepwear brand Lunya has an all-in-one fix with its Restore Travel Kit, which comes with a basic tank, a long-sleeve tee, a pair of leggings, a sleep mask, and socks (former city guides director Corina Quinn is a big fan ). The bundle is neatly packaged in a very practical mesh laundry bag, and each item is crafted from a breathable Pima cotton-blend fabric that promises to help increase blood flow and oxygen levels, ultimately improving circulation.

Friend + Folk

Launched in 2022, Friend + Folk is a woman-owned , gender- and size-inclusive line made in downtown Los Angeles at Bomme Studio , a CFDA-approved, ethical and sustainable production house. The pieces are produced in small batches to reduce waste, and are supremely comfortable—the Joon joggers are a personal favorite of mine, but for a more classic sweatpant, try the Harbor style. Other in-flight staples include the long-sleeve Witter T-shirt and Crosby classic hoodie .

Image may contain: Clothing, and T-Shirt

Spun from the finest goat hair, Naadam’s 100 percent Mongolian cashmere basics are so ridiculously soft, it feels like a luxurious blanket that you can wear out in public—and on transcontinental flights. The built-in perks of cashmere include high breathability, and anti-wrinkle and odor-blocking benefits. The brand's tailored sweaters and hoodies will keep you comfy without looking unkempt.

Image may contain: Clothing, Long Sleeve, Sleeve, Knitwear, Sweater, and Sweatshirt

Former Traveler editor Noah Kaufman calls Ibex's clothing “some of the nicest, most comfortable stuff I've ever put on.” Made of Ibex's signature Merino wool fabric, the clothes are built to curb odor, and the fabric is naturally thermoregulating—meaning you can wear pieces year-round—and smooth against skin (no itchiness here). He's been wearing a pair of ultra-soft joggers around the house, and says they'll make a great addition to any long-haul flight uniform.

Image may contain: Clothing, T-Shirt, and Sleeve

Athleta has plenty of great leggings, workout wear, and athleisure, but if you're looking for something a little more versatile to wear throughout your trip, check out the Brooklyn mid-rise ankle pant. Made with a stretchy, wrinkle-resistant, these pants are comfortable enough to wear on a plane, but have a tailored fit that can be dressed up or down. They're also super lightweight, in case you decide to pack them on the way back home.

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, Formal Wear, Suit, Adult, Person, Blazer, Coat, and Jacket

Universal Standard

If there's a brand that can get us to wear "real clothes" on a plane, it's Universal Standard. With clothes from size 00 to 40, its mission is to create clothing that looks and feels good on every body, using fabrics like premium Peruvian cotton, soft Italian Merino wool, and French satin-back crepe to do so. The Promenade linen jumpsuit could easily be worn all day long, and the Sally Liquid Jersey shirt dress is a piece you'll wear again and again. As for the jeans, before you shake your head, know that the brand's styles are stretchy, with a truly relaxed, comfortable fit—look to the ComfortDenim collection for the most plane-friendly pieces. If jeans are a no-go (fair), try the Go-Stretch pant for a looser waistband.

travel outfits for business class

With its penchant for solid colors (and the occasional stripe) and classic silhouettes, Everlane makes tons of mix-and-match travel essentials . The Cashmere Stroopwafel turtleneck and Dream Pant are some of our readers' favorites, but we'd also point to the Perform legging , Re-Track barrel sweatpant , and Felted Merino half-zip as great long-haul flight pieces.

Image may contain: Sonny Zhou, Blouse, Clothing, Shirt, Dress Shirt, and Pants

Free People

Free People is known for its breezy, bohemian-style clothes, so of course they'd make the kind of pants, coats, and utility suits that are comfortable enough to wear on a plane. The Studio to Street collection and FP Movement collections are filled with layering pieces and roomy pants you can throw on after a workout, though like leggings or yoga pants, they serve many purposes. For overnight flights, we like the Hailee Cardi set. If you're in need of a versatile jacket you can wear on cold planes and chilly fall evenings alike, the loose-fitting Dolman Quilted Knit remains popular and comes in tons of different colorways.

Image may contain: Clothing, Formal Wear, Suit, Pants, Person, Footwear, Shoe, Knitwear, Sweater, and Coat

Banana Republic

If you're not the type to wear loungewear on a plane, no matter the flight time, you've still got options that prioritize comfort. Banana Republic's linen resort pieces fit the mold, with slim-cut and wide-leg pants, button-up short-sleeve shirts , and more options that can take you from the airport to the office, or to the resort pool, depending on how you style them.

Image may contain: Home Decor, Linen, Blouse, Clothing, T-Shirt, Shirt, and Fashion

Versatile and multidimensional, Aday ensures that every single one of its items has more than one feature—the result of working with engineers to source technologically advanced fabrics that can wick moisture, regulate heat, defy wrinkles, resist ultra-violet rays, and so much more. Simply put, Aday's pieces are exactly what you want to wear on a long flight. There’s the technical silk wrap top that not only does all of the above, but can be worn more than one way. The thin strap tank , also made from technical silk, is the perfect layering piece (plus, it has adjustable straps). And finally, to complete the ideal traveling outfit, there’s the super-stretchy elastic-banded pant, which is both quick-drying and wrinkle-resistant.

travel outfits for business class

The maker of many a wardrobe staple, including some of our favorite basic tees , California-based brand Buck Mason offers plenty of thermal tees, sweaters, and button-ups that make great layering pieces on chilly flights. For a classic but slightly elevated sweats look, Traveler 's associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny loves traveling in the brand's cozy sweatpant and crew neck .

Image may contain: Clothing, Long Sleeve, Sleeve, Knitwear, Sweater, Sweatshirt, and Hoodie

Jenni Kayne

Embody the laid-back, California-cool aesthetic with pieces from Jenni Kayne. Her designs are made to last, and often come in soothing neutral tones. You can find comfortable but structured essentials like the polished Rio trouser and the popular Cocoon sweater, as well as cozy accessories like cashmere socks and oversized blanket shawls .

Even though I like to feel comfortable in my clothing during flights, I don’t want to necessarily throw away style either. Check out a few airplane outfit ideas to feel relaxed but still look chic when traveling!

Best Real People Airplane Outfit Ideas

Table of contents.

Mastering the right outfit to wear on an airplane is no easy feat. You have the plane climate and destination climate to consider, and you want to still look stylish while feeling comfortable.

One of the key ways I come up with flight outfit ideas is by creating an interchangeable capsule wardrobe . Not only does it help with simplified packing, which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase, but I can revolve what I wear on the airplane to sightseeing, nature excursions, and even nights out on the town.

airplane-outfit

A travel capsule wardrobe should be composed of soft, yet packable fabrics that can compress and be organized into packing cubes . And each item should mix and match with each other, be super versatile, so that means I can pack less but still cover all my activities. And, of course, have nice styling details too!

Anyway, recently I felt moved to think about the best airplane outfit ideas due to people-watching at the airport and noting some real-life travel looks that fit well in capsule wardrobes. (They basically rocked!)

Regardless of your style, we’ve recreated these looks that may spark something in you as well:

  • Easy Comfort
  • Glam Globetrotter
  • Easy Breezy
  • Rocker Chic
  • Pretty in Pink

Easy Comfort Airplane Outfit

This by far is the easiest airport outfit for anyone to duplicate. Easy to wear basics in neutral interchangeable colors plus a few stylish accessories – simple flight fashion!

The perfect formula for an easy to wear comfortable airplane outfit is a classic combo of fitted tee plus leggings. Pair with a cute yet cozy layer such as a long cardigan and shoes that are easy to remove to go through security.

Editor’s Tip Pick for an Airplane Outfit

This look is definitely for the ultra-glam jetsetter. I saw this airport outfit on a woman as she went through security and I couldn’t help but stare in awe at her elegance and designer style. I’m not sure I could pull this off but cheers to you if you can!

Dress  |  Scarf  |  Sandals  |  Handbag

Airplane Outfit for a Beach Vacation

One of the loveliest airplane travel outfit ideas—what a great look if you’re headed to a warm destination! I’d definitely carry a cardigan with me in my personal item for the in-flight chills but this is sexy, sophisticated, and a cool take on this season’s neutral – military green.

airplane-outfit

Boots  | Pants  |  Shirt  |  Jacket  |  Bag |  Carry-On

First Class Airplane Outfit

This outfit is definitely more up my alley, at least when traveling to cities. The one issue is the metal on the jacket and boots but they’re easy to take off as you go through the security line. Totally worth a little effort.

airplane-outfit

Trench  |  T Shirt  |  Denim  |  Trainers | Purse

Casual yet Chic Airplane Outfit

Understated elegance, this classic look seems to be a timeless airport outfit in Europe since I saw women of all ages sporting an ensemble such as this. The trench was EVERYWHERE at Heathrow airport in November and rightfully so. It’s an investment piece that’s sure to stand the test of time. Seriously, one of the top outfits to wear on airplane trips!

airplane-outfit

Boots | Sweater  |  Jeans  |  Coat  | Handbag

Feminine Airplane Outfit

I absolutely love this airplane style outfit and can imagine an epic picture in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The neutral wardrobe is offset by the bold statement coat which is a great travel strategy when traveling in the winter. After all, your pictures will mostly be of you in a coat, why not make it a great one?

airplane-outfit

Trousers  |  Top  |  Boots

Boho Cozy Airplane Outfit

This look took me by surprise but I really like the unexpected combination. Easy to wear, comfortable pieces with weather-friendly boots , and a few key boho pieces that exude editorial-worthy confidence. Love it!

Wearing my All Saints leather iacket with Delsey Suitcase during my flight to Thailand

Fall can be a tricky time of year. I try to avoid going full-on winter and in this case, I was traveling to Thailand during October, so knew I’d shed things like scarves for an airy tank top upon landing.

I love this look because it’s clean and easy to put together. The pants have a give and the coat is fitted but I can move my elbows and arms with ease.  A scarf is particularly topical for fall because when there’s a slight chill it instantly warms me up.

My flight from US to England with All Saints leather jacket , | Ankle Boots ( similar ),  Delsey suitcase and Rebecca Minkoff backpack

While I tend to wear simple colors, I still like a bit of rock n’ roll edge to my look every so often!

For this airplane outfit, I was traveling during the wintertime from the US to England and wanted some warmth, so I wore a leather jacket and layered a shirt underneath that. I then put on my fave jeans and then slid in some funky low-heeled ankle boots. I was comfy and cozy I tell you!

airplane-outfit

Blouse | Spanx Leggings | Tory Burch Flats | Longchamp Tote | Delsey Suitcase

This beauty is my new fave airplane outfit that’s awesome for spring (or early fall)!

The look is super stylish but seriously comfortable. I prefer movement and stretch in my pants when I fly and these Spanx faux leather leggings have give in the elastic waistband and knee area. They’re kinda my go-to’s now!

airplane-outfit

Spanx Moto Leggings | Ankle Boots ( similar ) | Delsey Suitcase | Nomad Lane Bento Bag

Good flight shoes are a must so I seek out flexible flats, comfy boots,  or slip-ons that don’t pinch my feet and can be easily removed through security. These Tory Burch Minnie flats were a new buy and so surprisingly comfy and I walked from terminal to terminal with no problems!

Check out reviews for both the Tory Burch Minnie flats and the Spanx faux leather leggings !

Wearing Spanx leggings and black ankle boots as my favorite airplane outfit

Editor’s Winter Favorite: All-Black Chic Airplane Outfit

This is by far, my FAVORITE and best outfit for airplane travel during the winter! It’s warm and layered, so I can take things off/on when needed, and I still feel fashionable.

I was actually going from cold to warm weather, so I wore my heaviest items on the plane and changed once I arrived at my destination of Bonaire. And when I say “heavy” that refers to my coat and boots.

The secret to a capsule wardrobe is to include packable items. My coat is Anatomie, it’s well made and can compress down fairly well, and my boots were a little bulkier but I always look for ones that are as lightweight as possible. And these ones are waterproof so it can handle the elements and still look cute!

Feel free to check out the best waterproof ankle boots for more inspiration!

airplane-outfit

Jacket (similar) | Top (similar) |  Pants (similar) | Slip-ons (similar) | Messenger Bag

I wore this when I hit Europe in the summertime and it was a durable, adorable ensemble I remember fondly!

For me, it’s important to have a comfy flight outfit, and I usually re-wear the same outfit for travel days thereafter, whether I’m flying or taking a train. If I’ve really nailed down an outfit that works for me, then it’s a keeper!

I swear by using lightweight pants and jacket   . It has lightweight fabrics that don’t retain moisture so I feel airy in hot climates. For a top, the sleeveless blouse comes with me for every summer trip! It’s comfortable and breathable, and I can layer it with a cardigan or light jacket if need be.

Again, shoes need to feel right, on or off a flight, and I discovered these Skechers Mary Jane slip-ons ( which are now sold out but here’s a similar one ) because readers raved about them for years! Their memory foam insole means my feet feel cushioned all the time!

More of My Airplane Outfits

I hope you found these cute airplane outfits motivating to begin piecing together your own personal capsule wardrobe that can move from “up in the air” to “on the ground!”

airplane-outfit

Aside from the wardrobe choices above, what stood out above all was that all these travelers had freshly styled hair and makeup, which really adds the finishing touch to even the most casual of airport ensembles. Don’t forget that a good blow dry and mascara goes a long way!

I love these travel outfit ideas! I want to be comfy when I travel, but I also want to look cute and not lazy or sloppy. These outfit ideas are just what I need to help me put together the perfect travel outfit for myself!

Diana Janisbel

Wait! Thanks so much for sharing these outfit ideas, it feels so easy to recreate when you have it with pictures like this. I travel a lot and my outfits can be hit or miss haha

Heidi Quan

Love these polished yet comfy outfit suggestions. So key to be comfortable yet still stylish even when traveling on those long haul flights. Love them all.

Cathleen

Most of my flights are between the US and Southeast Asia – so I’m usually just focused on how to be as comfortable as possible for 30+ hours. I love Vuori joggers (so soft!!) and a tank top for if I get hot with a jacket for if I get cold. I do need to step up my game when I fly in the States so I appreciate all the stylish ideas!

tammi

So many cute options. Thank you for sharing both the suggestions as well as some personal examples. It’s always fun to get new ideas of combinations that will look cute and travel well.

Michele Smith

Luv this article! I have followed travel fashion girl for several years. I found a video on U-tube on how to pack for 10-days in Europe using a carry-on bag. Guess what? It worked. Have been using capsule wardrobe concept ever since. I use solid hair products at home too. Always great to see the latest thoughts on fashion forward looks.

Amy Hanley

This is so helpful! I am very impressed by those that can wear upscale, polished blazers, jeans and dresses when traveling. I appreciate that you have practical but stylish options for us leggings and cardigan sweater gals! Wish the Skechers slip ones were still in stock.

Amy Fowler

Love wearing my go-to and heavier items on the plane – jean jacket, white tennies for spring/summer, and Chelsea boots for fall/winter. Always bring a layering piece in my personal bag, and tie a scarf on my personal bag too. The temp always seems to fluctuate between boarding and in flight, so it’s nice to have options.

Avagail

My go-to outfit is leggings and a merino wool t-shirt – super casual, but I want to step up my airport outfits so this post was super helpful with ideas!

I love all of these outfits! To me, the airport is one of the best things about travel and I look forward seeing, walking, exploring as much of it as I can. Therefore, the most important part of the travel outfit are the comfortable shoes!

Ellen

I’m all about comfort on an airplane. These suggestions are great!

Karen

Taking my first International trip in a few months. I’ve never taken a night flight and didn’t know what to wear since we arrive in the morning and will be on the go right away! These choices are all so helpful! Now to only decide, I love them all!

Darcy Hartman

I recently bought a couple of pairs of Old Navy high waisted power soft wide leg pants in navy and in black. These have been perfect for travel. Super comfy on the plane, and they look nice enough for conferences. I love all your looks here!

Christine Ince

So many great tips! I’ve used your packing lists to successful pack for a two week Italy vacation in a carryon. I was able to put together plenty of fashionable interchangeable outfits and I’m so grateful that I packed light! My red eye travel outfit was perfect and included layers. A tank, lightweight linen tee, scarf that doubled as a blanket, and a pair of athleta Brooklyn heights joggers. Their joggers and trousers are perfect for flying.

Ann Rumberger

Love seeing all these options! Such variety for any style of airline travel and any type of style. Great inspiration.

Angela Young

Thanks for this article! Having had flight cancellations where I ended up in the same clothes for a couple days, I always think about what outfit would serve me well – versatile, comfortable, and will look okay a bit mussed or wrinkled… These outfits look chic and fit my style, too. Thank you!

Bryanna

Thank you for this article, super helpful and I completely agree! More and more I’m learning about capsule wardrobes and how important they are!

Patricia Hellrung

Great ideas for travel outfits…comfort and style. Using a lot of these ideas for my Fall European trip! Appreciate all the great tips

Karen Clements

I love all of these ideas for outfits to wear when flying on a plane. Two of my favorite pairs of pants to wear for flying are a pair of Quince linen pants which I purchased upon recommendations from readers of Travel Fashion Girl and also the Eddie Bauer Departure pants. I get so may great ideas for clothing and what to pack, etc. from these blogs.

Caryn Goode

I love all these options. I struggle with choosing an airport outfit with pieces I can wear again. Thank you!

Jill Hauwiller

Love all these great options!

Georgia Small

I’ve learned so many great tips from TFG as well as the TFG Facebook group. Thanks so much for all that you do.

Lynne

Great ideas. I always layer because I am always hot, but then it can get cold in the airport or plane!

Lynn Pike

What to wear on the plane, especially a long haul vacation, is always a challenge. Stylish yet comfortable, easy to wear yet not sloppy, arriving at your destination not looking like you have spent hours in the plane. Loved the outfits by season! This site never disappoints! What a gem 💎 ✨️!

Lisa Parker

I love all of these, especially the understated elegance. You have such beautiful taste and have inspired me, not only with my travel wardrobe, but also in my everyday wardrobe!

Beth Theisen

I love this blog post and go back to it often depending on where I am going. You make planning for travel so much fun, and a different sort of adventure for certain. I also love spotting fellow TFG travelers by their airplane outfits as well.

Tammy

Love these ideas!! I am traveling out of the country for the first time next month and, thanks to TFG, I have put together my perfect outfit! I will be comfortable and well put together. Ordering the last piece today (also a TFG recommendation). Love this site!!

Gwen

Love these ideas. Always looking for ways to be comfortable flying, while also looking stylish.

Melissa A (Missie) Berreth

What fantastic ideas! I always struggle the most with plane outfits because I want comfort but don’t want to look sloppy or old! Thank you for doing all the legwork for us!

Love these ideas! Thank you for sharing.

Kim Hoffman

It’s always a challenge finding items that travel well, are comfortable, and leaving you looking “pulled together” after a flight. These are great ideas – thanks!

Marianne Livengood

Loved all of your airplane outfits. Going to South Africa and looking for comfy outfits for 15 hour flight. Great ideas. Thanks.

Cathleen Huckaby

You ROCK! This ‘1-stop’ travel trove of wisdom, REAL-life help, and tips is a God-send! I’ve ordered many items you & other readers recommend (espec. on major holidays/Black Fri. sales). As a woman on a budget it’s a bit tough w/ all the expenSive sites (Nordstroms, JC Crew) so I appreciate you adding “Quince” as they seem to cut out the middleman/advertising. As the founder of a charity every dollar counts, thus a $340 trench coat is out, yet on Quince it’s much much less (& they have free returns!) I just ordered my 1st item from Quince & looking forward to wearing it as you highly recommended it! Thanks for ALL you do, Cathleen (RN)

Michelle

Love all the outfits! Is there an updated plus size article for the over age 60 group.

Linh Chin-Lai

I have my favorite airplane outfit: long pants (lightweight for summer, heavier for winter), sleeveless top, cardigan, tennis shoes with low rise socks.

Carol Askew

This is a post that I keep coming back to again and again every time I travel. I have recommended this blog and Facebook group to many of my friends. I consider the Facebook group to be the single most helpful group that I am in. Of course I do live and love to travel lol.

Saby Herrera

I’m always looking for airport outfit ideas! Love all the different options and styles. Thanks for sharing!

Nancy Jo Tschida

I love the variety of options too as well as the total look that includes everything to create the outfits even lipstick.

Lauren Andrea Morgan

I love this post. Especially the black and blue with leather jacket. I love options for women of all ages and sizes. I can never color coordinate, so I appreciate the ideas!!

Nancy Y Buchanan

I honestly think the “airplane” outfit is the hardest one of all – LOL!! Since I’m west coast based all my flights to Europe are 10+ hours so… a VERY long day of travel! The Easy Comfort” outfit is definitely my style – cute, comfortable and practical since it features two bulky and hard to pack wardrobe items – a long cardigan and boots! A variation of this look is going to be my choice when traveling to London and Croatia next spring!

Ilene Smith

Always love your ideas! I find that my travel outfits change based on where I’m going and what I’m doing once I arrive. But often some iteration of what you’re showing.

Sinéad Shah

I travel in Athleta Brooklyn pants that I found because of this site. They dress up or down and are super comfortable and also can be washed in the shower and dry overnight. Awesome travel staple

Teri Naiser

While I have yet to do a carry-on-only trip, I’ve learned so many valuable tips from your site! I now have the best travel pants and a wardrobe capsule that mixes and matches beautifully! Thanks for all you do!

Tammy Fellows

All of these are great options, thank you! Soooo much nicer looking and just as comfy as some of the traveling outfits I see at my job as a flight attendant! Love your ideas!

Tobi-Velicia

I love these outfit options! I usually wear a short DVF wrap dress with leggings and shoes that are easy to slip on and off for travel. But I definitely want to try a few of these amazing looks.

Sherri Killam

I have followed Travel Fashion Girl for some time and I cannot even tell you how many times I have read about the best shoes for travel and the best bags (handbags, backpacks) that are secure and stylish. It is because of you that I discovered Travelon. This post about what to wear on the plane with accompanying photos really hits home. We are traveling to Europe at the end of this week and I had vacillated between wearing stretchy Ponte pants that unfortunately have not pockets and blue jeans. After reading some posts on Facebook and seeing these pictures (and knowing how much I rely on pockets), the jeans have won out. Plus, not having to pack them will reduce the weight in my suitcase. Please know that even those of us who are not very chatty usually are reading and enjoying TFG and are very thankful for this resource. May all your journeys be happy ones.

Colleen Hackett

I’ve been following Travel Fashion Girl for some time and love all the tips and real life scenarios. I’m in my 60’s and am mostly into being comfortable with some fashion thrown in. I love that the styles shown are for the younger women all the way up to us traveling seniors! I can always find something here that works for me.

Cheryl Finley

I bought the tee and joggers from Sexy Modest Boutique. I have traveled in them for the past year. They are comfortable, breathable, and I can create different looks with jackets, shoes, scarves, etc…I have black in both pieces. When worn together it looks like a jumpsuit which I like, but I also use each piece with my other clothing to create outfits, so they are part of my capsule. I just recently traveled to Europe and was very comfortable on the long flights (felt like pjs).

Gwen Pinkston

I’ve been looking at these. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on wearing for travel.

Beth Williams

I love this post! So informative and the photos make such a difference in seeing how it all works together.

Liz

I tend to wear long dresses on flights. That way my legs are covered if it’s cold but also, I’m not too hot when I get off the plane. My go to has Spaghetti straps that I paid with a cardigan or jean jacket. That is the ultimate in comfort for me!

Christine Butkiewicz

I’ve been following Traveling Fashion Girl for the past year. Joined the group after my husband surprised me with a trip to Italy. Love to travel but struggle with overpacking and never seeming to be able to put together an outfit. Your blog has been soooo helpful and I’ve learned so much! Thank you for all the interesting information and truly helpful advice!!! Love it!

Zoe Green

I love everything about Travel Fashion Girl! The tips on packing and clothing are spot on. So glad to have found you. Keep traveling!

Loredana Ragone

Your blogs and fb group have helped me be a better Travel Fashion Girl, thank you so much for your advice and suggestions! I love this community.

Sarah Dorn

I wear a lounge set from Duluth Trading Co. on long-haul flights. It’s a tank top with a built-in bra, it’s very comfortable! It’s a monochromatic look so it looks chic.

Cindy Merrill

Such cute outfits! I am inspired to get some new travel outfits!

Jennifer Bennett

I’m definitely an easy comfort kind of traveler, haha. My go-to’s are either Fabletics leggings or Anatomie pants (always stretch!) with 2-3 layers on top, typically a tank or tee with a long sleeve shirt or sweater over and optional scarf because I am always cold on the plane but hot in the airport. I’m an options girl for sure! I do try to style up with my tops though so I look put together vs frumpy.

Jane Bitsicas

So many good ideas. I love having a pulled together travel look, rather than just any old sweats and t-shirts that I see so much of. That way I can hit the ground running when I arrive and not have to change.

Kathleen Weissenberger

I have read and re-read so many of the blog posts. I have purchased a few items from the FB group and the TFG favorites…and I had considered myself a well seasoned frequent travel expert!

Anel Muterspaugh

The easy comfort type is the way to go for me. I mostly travel with kids si ability to be comfortable is key. Joggers, loose T-shirt, cardigan or jacket and running shoes.

Peggy Workman

Every year I fly at least once to Europe and once to Hawaii from KY. At 72, I’ve discovered that my favorite flying outfit is is midi length sleeveless black jersey dress with knee length slits on both side seams. Flexible enough to wear as a jumper, or wear it with a scarf, add a sweater, or a jacket, or a pull over sweater. It’s easier to use the toilet on an airplane but pulling something up then pulling down pants and attempting to keep them off the bathroom floor.

Ronnell Crowder

Wish more of the travel clothes came in tall.

Suzie

Thank you for elevating the idea of what’s appropriate for travel. With so many options, it’s possible to be comfortable and pulled together. It always amazes me to see what fellow travelers wear to board an airplane….and not usually in a good way 😞 Those who take the time to look nice stand out in a positive way, and that’s what I aspire to. So grateful for all of the resources here!!

GG

As someone who wears skirts 300 days of the year, I always have trouble with my airplane outfit- how to style pants?! Thanks for the inspiration!

Rose Trasatti

Love these tips plus all the others you post!

Nikki

Where is that chunky silver necklace from?

Alex

Hi Nikki, it’s from By Aris. I loooooooove their metal jewelry so much!!!! And they evenmade this custom necklace for me and named it after me. 😊 The “Alexandra” necklace: https://byaris.com/products/alexandra-necklace/

Dianne Wendling

Love your blog and all the Facebook group ideas and recommendations!!

Tiffany Cline

Great suggestions. After many years I have finally come up with my go to airport outfit. Long sleeve or short sleeve stripe tee, cardigan or blazer, black comfy pants and loafers with a scarf!

Catherine Lewis

Hello – Thank you! Trying to figure out exactly which long grey cardigan that is in first pic…the Amazon link shows several.

Hi Catherine, I have had a look for you but unfortunately it looks like this cardigan is sold out.

We do have more options on this post which you might like: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-cardigans-for-women/

Elaine

I am flying Tuesday night to Sweden for a 2 week road trip. Your article helped me choose my “flying” outfit from my Classic 12 piece capsule. Thanks to you and all your readers for taking the anxiety out of packing for my first trip since before Covid.

Cary

Love the Casual and Chic look featured above. Comfort with a pop of color!

Susan

Thank you for giving me inspiration for my airplane outfit. I have been working on it for the past month or so . . . I like to be stylish, yet comfortable. Since it will be a long 36 hours of flying/travel time, I will be changing to some comfy wide leg pants for the overnight leg, but plan on being more stylish for the first part wearing my EB black Ponte pants, Departure 2.0 long sleeve white shirt, and jean jacket. Still deciding on which shoes to wear!

Christina

Jeans are not the best thing to wear on a plane. There are lots of comfy trousers with flexibility and look a heck of a lot better. Open toes is a no-no, loafers or boots better choice for footwear. Otherwise, thanks for posting cute travel outfits for all of us!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us Christina! ?

Carol Anne Gartland

I love all of these ideas. I do not know if I am just old-school or still believe in fairytales, but I always try and be comfortable while chic. Using my Delsey Chatelet bag ( recommended by TFG) and a faux leather backpack, I keep thinking I will be invited to First Class for a glass of champagne. lol

M

I found scarves to be a TSA tag. They ask me to remove, so they know you’re not carrying something around your neck. Even a bandanna.

Thank you for sharing your travel experiences with us!

Natalie

I like the boots in the Editor’s Tip Pick for an Airplane Outfit. They are black with buckles. Can you send the exact link to find these?

Hi Natalie, I am sorry about this but unfortunately the boots featured were the Ugg Simmens boots which have recently become unavailable. They are similar in style to the Ugg Wilde boots featured here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-waterproof-boots/ We are looking to update many of our articles so thank you for bring this to our attention. I am sorry we could not have been of more help ?

Thank you for the other options. Going on an Alaskan cruise and I was told to have waterproof shoes due to the fact it rains a lot.

Hi Natalie, so pleased I was able to help! ? If you need any more tips to help with packing for your cruise, we also have this article: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-pack-for-alaska-cruise-in-august/ Have an amazing time! ?

Do have any suggestions/articles for international (long haul flights) fashion?

Mrs C

I love sleeveless, soft cotton midi dresses with a cardigan or blazer and sneakers. We fly to Italy often, so I like to look decent. I learned my lesson about wide leg pants: They touch the floor when using the bathroom! For that reason, when wearing pants, it’s best to wear skinnies or leggings.

Hi there, thank you for sharing your go-to travel outfit with us, sounds comfortable and stylish!!! Happy travels ?

Bessie Brown Lewis

Thanks for that nugget about the wide leg pants. Will save them for a night out for our trip.

Grace Crussiah

Agree about wide leg pants. Slim or regular leg pants work for flights too.

Patti

Loved the article, always looking for ways to add a little style to my airplane standbys. Whose says you can’t look good and fly?

alex

Exactly 😉 Thanks Patti!

Jolie Johnsen

Thank you for the wardrobe inspo. The air travel outfit ideas are brilliant!

Dot Higgins

I always travel in quality knits that will keep their shape. The picture at the top of the article looked very unrealistic. If I was wearing that tucked-in cloth blouse, I’d be a wrinkled, sloppy, uncomfortable mess at the end of a 7+ hour flight. Short hops are one thing, but I’ve yet to see someone look so fresh after a trans-continental flight.

Great point Dot! These outfits are only based on people I saw in London so I can’t really be sure of how long they were traveling. Thanks for the feedback!

Linda Goodfellow

Nice!! I loved every one of these outfits.

Thanks Linda!

Julia K

love the military green outfit! so chic and looks comfy..

alex

Awesome! Glad you found one you like!

Elizabeth Jones

My favourite! I always wear a dress…mid calf next time. Cardi, trench, rope low wedge sandals. Soo comfy, smart for any age! Dress is always loose fitting.

Wendy

Any suggestion on where to get the striped wide-leg pants? The link isn’t working.

Hi Wendy! How about these? http://bit.ly/22T8DMk

Claire Sparks

Love the pictures of you at St. Pancras Station in London. Love all the outfits but especially the pink ensemble for Paris.

Thank you Claire! 🥰

Kathy Peters

Can’t wait to get ready and travel light for my upcoming trip to Croatia. Thank you for all the great tips!

Kate

I’m definitely a cross between easy comfort, french and rocker chic when I travel. Comfort if key, but I would prefer not to look like a slob.

There are so many comfortable clothes available, no need to go to the airport in sweats 😉

Rhonda

Since I don’t check luggage, my first rule is to wear the heaviest clothes. So for my flight from US to Europe in a few weeks, that means jeans, a sweater, and boots. I wish I could wear yoga pants to facilitate sleeping on the overnight flight!

Why not carry your yoga pants in your carryon and change out of your jeans before you board the flight? Or wear leggings under your jeans and then remove them? 😉

Irene

I’m traveling from Alaska to Spain and I would shoot myself if i had to travel in tight uncomfortable, deep vein thrombosis inducing jeans 🙂 Pack lighter and leave your jeans in the carryon. Wear leggings on the plane. The difference in weight is minimal.

Hi Irene, do you dive in Alaska? I ask because of your email 🙂 I love scuba diving so that sounds incredible!

Sandy

Some lovely outfits esp like the pink. But, I wonder how did they manage , fine on the way out, but what about when they arrived….have you seen how small the plane cubicles are, and how long the impatient queues on board can be when travelling ‘cattle class’?

With the exception of the Glam Globetrotter they all seemed pretty easy to get in and out of. They’re all mostly just a nicer version of jeans and tee 😉

Theresa

I love to ear comfortable but classy outfit in the plane. I have scored some upgrades a. Because I asked nicely and b. Because I looked like I was a perfect fit for Business or First Class. White London shirt and blazer or trench. Black pants and either nice loafers or boots. A scarf or pashmina. Fresh make up and hair coiffed.

Sounds like the perfect first class look!

Sara

LOVE the ideas! The military green outfit is tres chic and I can’t get over that pink coat. <3

-Sara http://www.coveritgirl.blogspot.com

Thanks Sara!

Michelle

I’m the Easy Comfort type, although I really enjoy being all dressed up (especially for short trips). But on a flight, especially a longer one, I prefer to be comfortable…

It would be nice to travel in glamorous outfits like celebrities but how do they deal with the lack of comfort?

Zoe

Maybe they change into pyjamas for the actual flight?! Not to mention the use of stylists before getting to the arrivals hall of the airport!

My recent autumn/winter travelling outfit of choice is a grey marl jersey dress with 3/4 length sleeves, which I wear with thermal tights (from Marks & Spencer’s) and a merino wool cardigan or sweater. I don’t bother with many accessories when travelling, apart from a scarf – and obviously a coat and gloves/hat if I’m outdoors! This outfit has really worked well for me, even on an uncomfortable overnight long haul flight that was delayed by 3 hours!

Most of the outfits looked pretty comfortable…with the exception of the “Glam Globetrotter” outfit that is! The jewelry, hair, and makeup made the biggest difference from casual to chic. Sounds like we have a similar winter travel outfit – comfortable dress plus tights!

Solange

Wish I could find the ARMY Green Dress for the Beach Vacation. It’s EXACTLY what I’ve been lookn for.

When it comes to dressing for business class, it's important to keep in mind that you are representing yourself and your company. Therefore, you want to make sure that your outfit is professional and polished. One great option is to wear dress pants and a blouse. This classic combination is timeless, and can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

For pants, choose a pair that fits you well and is made of high-quality fabric. Dress pants should be sleek and tailored, without any rips, tears, or stains. A darker color, such as black, navy, or charcoal, is recommended as it is more formal and versatile. You can pair your pants with a button-up blouse in a complementary color or pattern. Look for blouses that are made of a silky or crepe material, as this will give your outfit a more luxurious feel.

Accessories are also important considerations when putting together a business class outfit. Opt for a simple yet elegant pair of heels, ideally no higher than 3 inches. A classic tote bag or briefcase is also a great addition, as it provides both functionality and style. Jewelry should be kept minimal; pearl studs or a simple necklace are perfect choices to complete your refined look.

It's important to keep in mind that the dress code for business class can vary depending on the airline and level of service. Therefore, it's always a good idea to check their guidelines ahead of time to ensure that your outfit meets their requirements. However, when in doubt, it's always better to err on the side of caution and dress more conservatively.

In conclusion, dress pants and a blouse are a classic and timeless choice for a business class outfit. To ensure that you look professional and polished, choose high-quality pieces and keep your accessories simple and elegant. By following these tips, you'll be sure to make a great impression both in the air and on the ground.

There's no denying that business class is a step up from economy when it comes to comfort and luxury. However, it's important to remember that it's still a professional setting, and as such, you should dress accordingly. While there may not be an official dress code, a tailored suit is always a safe bet.

A well-fitted suit not only looks sharp and sophisticated, it also exudes confidence and authority. Remember to opt for a timeless, neutral color such as navy, black or charcoal gray, and invest in quality fabrics that won't wrinkle or crease easily. If you're unsure about the weather or temperature on the flight, choose a breathable material that won't leave you feeling hot and stuffy.

In terms of accessorizing, make sure to keep it simple and classic. A crisp white button-down shirt, polished dress shoes and a smart leather belt are all staples that will complement your suit perfectly. Avoid bold patterns or flashy jewelry, as these can be distracting and pull focus away from your professional demeanor.

Keep in mind that the objective is not just to look good, but to feel comfortable enough for a long flight. Make sure you choose a suit that you feel at ease in, one that allows for free movement and isn't too tight or constricting. This way, you can maintain your professional appearance without sacrificing your comfort.

In summary, a tailored suit is the perfect attire for business class. It showcases your professionalism and attention to detail, while also keeping you comfortable and confident during your flight. So next time you're travelling on business, make sure to pack your favorite suit - you'll look and feel like a true executive.

Style Guide: How to Rock Sparkly Boots with Your Outfits

If you are embarking on a business class flight, finding the perfect outfit to wear can prove to be a bit challenging. While comfort should be a top priority, you also want to look professional and chic. One outfit that checks all those boxes is a knee-length dress. Here’s why you should consider this garment for your next business-class flight.

Firstly, knee-length dresses are versatile. Since they come in a range of styles and materials, you can easily find one that suits your taste. You can opt for a sleeveless dress for warmer days or choose a long-sleeved one for a cooler climate. Additionally, you can choose from a variety of materials, including cotton, silk, and wool, depending on the season and destination.

Secondly, knee-length dresses are a perfect fit for business class. They look stylish while being comfortable enough for long flights. Since most knee-length dresses are not too tight, you won’t have to worry about restricted movement, which is crucial during long haul flights. Plus, they are easy to put on and take off, making it convenient when you need to visit the restroom.

Thirdly, knee-length dresses are easy to accessorize. Pairing your dress with the right accessories can elevate your outfit and make you look even classier upon arrival. You can combine heels or flats, depending on your preference. You can make a statement by wearing bold earrings, a necklace, or a bracelet.

Lastly, knee-length dresses are adaptable, and you can wear them in other settings other than business class. They are the ultimate go-to for any occasion, from brunches to formal events. And as such, investing in a knee-length dress will be a valuable addition to your wardrobe.

In conclusion, when dressing for your next business class flight, you should put comfort and chicness into consideration. A knee-length dress offers the perfect balance, and you can easily combine it with different accessories, depending on your destination. It is versatile enough to wear at other events, making it an excellent wardrobe investment.

This means leaving your sweatpants and flip flops at home and opting for something a little more refined.

One of the most popular options for men travelling in business class is a button-up shirt and slacks. A button-up shirt can be worn in a variety of colours and patterns, depending on your personal style and the occasion. When choosing a shirt, aim for something that's made from high-quality fabric, as this will help it to retain its shape and look crisp throughout your flight.

When it comes to slacks, you'll want to choose something that's comfortable and tailored. Avoid pants that are too tight or restrictive, as these can be uncomfortable during a long flight. Opt for slacks that are made from wrinkle-free materials, such as wool or polyester, as these will resist creasing and maintain their appearance throughout your journey.

Maxi skirts and blouses are a chic and comfortable choice for those flying in business class. Not only do they create a sophisticated and professional look, but they also allow for ease of movement and comfort throughout a flight.

When choosing a maxi skirt for business class, opt for a mid to high-waisted skirt made from a comfortable and breathable material. Flowy fabrics like chiffon, silk, and cotton are ideal as they offer breathability and better airflow to prevent overheating on long flights. Additionally, maxi skirts with a front slit are an excellent option as they provide extra ventilation and allow for more mobility.

A blouse is the perfect top to pair with a maxi skirt in business class as it can offer a polished and put-together look. Opt for blouses made from light fabric, like cotton or silk, to help prevent discomfort and overheating. A neutral colored blouse like white, beige or black in a classic cut, like a button-up or a classic collarless blouse, is a perfect match for a maxi skirt.

Accessories are an essential component of any outfit, and business class is no exception. Simple and classic jewelry is the best bet, like a pair of pearl earrings or a delicate pendant necklace. They add elegance to your outfit without being too distracting. Pair the outfit with comfortable shoes like flats or low-heeled sandals to complete the perfect business class look.

In conclusion, dressing well in business class is essential, but comfort should never be compromised. Maxi skirts and blouses offer a perfect balance between formality and comfort, making them the ideal outfit choice for a long-haul flight. Next time you fly business class, consider a maxi skirt and blouse outfit, and you will look and feel great throughout your journey.

When it comes to dressing for business class, comfort and sophistication should go hand in hand. A cashmere sweater and trousers is an excellent choice for those looking to achieve a stylish, upscale look while traveling.

Cashmere is one of the softest and most luxurious fabrics available. It is incredibly comfortable and has excellent insulation properties, making it ideal for long flights. A cashmere sweater is also versatile enough to work both in-flight and during a business meeting at your destination.

When choosing cashmere trousers, opt for a tailored fit that flatters your figure and exudes professionalism. Pair them with a matching sweater or a crisp white shirt to complete the look. You can also accessorize with a belt, watch, and dress shoes for a classic touch.

In terms of color, a neutral palette is always a safe bet. Shades such as black, gray, beige, and navy are timeless and easy to match with other pieces. If you're feeling bold, you can also experiment with jewel tones or pastels to add a pop of color while still maintaining a professional appearance.

As with any travel outfit, it's important to prioritize comfort without sacrificing style. Stick to breathable fabrics and loose-fitting pieces that won't restrict your movement during the flight. In short, a cashmere sweater and trousers offer the perfect balance of comfort, elegance, and practicality for business class travel.

Cirque du Soleil Dress Attire: What to Wear to the Show

When it comes to traveling in business class, it's important to dress the part, as you never know who you might run into on the flight. One of the most classic and timeless outfits for a business class flight is a linen blazer and dress pants.

The linen blazer is a great option for business class travel, as it's both stylish and comfortable. Not only does it provide a sleek and professional appearance, but it's also breathable, making it a great choice for longer flights. Additionally, the lightweight fabric allows for easy packing and won't take up too much space in your luggage.

When it comes to pairing the linen blazer, your best bet is to opt for a pair of dress pants. This combination offers a classic and polished look that is perfect for business class travel. Dress pants can be made of wool, cotton, or even linen, depending on your personal preference and the temperature of your destination.

To complete the look, you can layer a dress shirt or blouse under the linen blazer. This will add an extra touch of sophistication to your outfit and create a perfect balance between style and comfort. You can also complete the look with a pair of dress shoes or loafers, depending on your preference.

Overall, traveling in business class requires a certain level of sophistication and dressing the part can go a long way in creating a favorable impression. With a linen blazer and dress pants, you'll look and feel confident, making your travel experience all the more enjoyable. So, next time you're traveling in business class, consider this classic and timeless outfit for an effortless and stylish look.

Dress to Impress: What to Wear to a Pole Dancing Workout

If you are planning to travel in business class, it is essential to dress appropriately as it is a sophisticated and professional setting. Wearing comfortable and classy clothing does not mean you have to compromise on style. One such outfit that can make you feel comfortable as well as stylish during travel is a silk blouse with dressy jeans.

A silk blouse comes in various styles, such as sleeveless, short sleeves, or full sleeves and can be paired with dressy jeans. Choose a silk blouse in vibrant colors or prints to add flair to your outfit. A silk blouse exudes a sense of elegance and sophistication that will complement the ambiance of business class.

Dressy jeans can be comfortable to wear, but it adds to the overall look of the outfit. Opt for dark denim that is fitted but not too tight, giving you freedom of movement. Pairing it with a silk blouse will give you a balanced look. Dressy jeans are a better choice when flying as they are not as formal as dress pants but also not as casual as regular jeans.

To complete the look, accessorize with subtle pieces such as stud earrings, stylish watch, and a small crossbody bag. Keep your makeup and hair effortlessly chic, opting for a natural look with a subtle lip color.

In conclusion, a silk blouse and dressy jeans combination can make for the perfect travel outfit for business class. It adds a touch of style and comfort, making you look and feel good during the flight. Remember to keep the accessories minimal to avoid any hassle at the security checkpoint. Keep it simple and classic, and you will be good to go.

Poolside Chic: Dressing for a Vegas Pool Party

One of the most important considerations when flying business class is choosing the right outfit. Whether you're traveling for business or pleasure, you want to dress in a way that is both stylish and comfortable. So, what should you wear in business class? One great option is to pair a chic midi skirt with some sleek leather flats.

Midi skirts are a versatile and stylish choice, and they come in a range of materials and styles. A midi skirt that falls just below the knee is a particularly good choice for business class, as it is both elegant and modest. You could opt for a classic pencil skirt or a flowy A-line style, depending on your personal taste and the occasion.

When it comes to footwear, leather flats are a great choice for business class. They're comfortable enough to wear throughout a long flight, but they look smart and sophisticated too. Opt for a pair in a neutral shade like black, brown, or nude, which will pair well with any outfit. Look for flats with a pointed or almond toe for a more polished look.

To complete your business class outfit, think about layering with a classic white shirt or blouse. This is a timeless and elegant choice that will always look sophisticated. Add a statement necklace or a pair of understated earrings to elevate your look. Finally, don't forget to bring a light cardigan or jacket with you, as temperatures on airplanes can vary.

In summary, when it comes to dressing for business class, comfort and style are key. A midi skirt and leather flats are a great combination that strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sophistication. Pair with a classic white shirt and a few simple accessories to complete the look. With this outfit, you'll be ready for anything your flight throws at you!

How to Pack for a Business Trip: Tips for Business Women

Before we get into what to pack for a business trip, let’s tackle how to pack for a business trip.

At Next Level Wardrobe , we encourage our clients to approach clothing with intentionality, and to value quality over quantity. Use these as your two guide posts as you prepare for your trip.

What does this mean in practice?

It means that every item you take with you should be there for a specific purpose. Have a realistic idea of what your trip requires instead of over-stuffing your bags with “just-in-case” items. Remember, you’re going on a business trip, not on a spontaneous adventure.

Approach your travels with a clear, concise plan and you’ll actually be more prepared and you’ll feel more put-together.

Our top tip for women wondering how to pack for a business trip is to start with the perfect luggage.

Choosing the Best Luggage for Your Business Trip

View this post on Instagram A post shared by TUMI (@tumitravel)

Although every trip and traveler is different, the need for a high-quality piece of luggage stays the same. First, you want a bag that’s sturdy to avoid any mid-travel misshapes or shopping for a replacement too soon.

Next, you want a bag that’s the right size for your travel needs.

In our experience, selecting a carry-on suitcase and either a backpack or a duffle bag is enough for most trips. (We’ll break this down with our packing list and how to pack your bag later on.)

An added bonus of this luggage duo? If you’re traveling by plane, you’ve got everything you need at your fingertips. No worrying about lost bags or racing against the clock at baggage claim.

When picking out what to pack for a business trip, we recommend checking out Tumi . They’ve got all things bags, backpacks, and suitcases. They’ve got a wide range of sizes, makes, and models from compact carry-ons to spacious weekenders for all occasions. You can also count on their complementary baggage trace system in case of loss or theft.

Last but not least, their warranty has you covered. The first year includes just about any type of damage to the suitcase (even from TSA or airline workers). Years 2 through 5 cover you for manufacturer defects or normal wear and tear.

Now that you’ve got your bags, let’s get to packing them.

How to Pack Clothes for a Business Trip

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NY + LA Personal Stylist (@nextlevelwardrobe)

With your perfect luggage in hand, let’s make the most of the space inside it. Recently, our NLW founder Cassandra Sethi went on a 6-week trip with just a carry-on and personal item. She was able to create 50 outfits with only 24 clothing items (including shoes).

Stuck on how to pack for a business trip in terms of clothes? Here are our tips for women on getting everything inside your bag:

1. Pack pants by folding them in half and laying them flat. We recommend placing these at the bottom of your bag so you can easily fit other items on top

2. Roll your tops over the pants. This is best for casual or knit-woven tops that won’t wrinkle too easily. Button-downs or other blouses and dresses are best folded on top of the pants. You can always steam these items once you arrive at your destination.

3. Fold sweaters flat and pack them over the rolled tops, leaving space for your shoes.

4. Pack your shoes inside a shoe bag. Some retailers sell dedicated shoe travel bags for this, but an old drawstring bag will do just fine as well.

5. If you’re traveling with a suit or gown, do not roll it. Either fold it neatly along with your pants or keep them in a garment bag.

When discussing what to pack for a business trip with clients or on our Instagram, we often get asked about packing cubes. Is it worth buying them or other supposed “space-savers”?

We vote no.

When you learn to lean out your wardrobe and you have the right bag, you don’t need anything else.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Set Your Suitcase up for Success

Before we get into our packing list, we have to address the elephant in the room: your closet.

If you don’t have the right pieces in your closet, you won’t have the right pieces in your suitcase either.

Perhaps you’ve got a closet full of too many pieces that don’t go together or don’t fit your current body. Maybe you’ve got a wardrobe of impulse buys that you wore once and ended up regretting.

Chances are, you won’t feel excited or confident about bringing these pieces on your business trip. This leads to overcompensating by overpacking just to try to string one outfit together.

To avoid these feelings in the first place, we recommend a closet clean-out . At NLW, we use a proprietary style system on all of our clients to help them feel confident, gain unlimited outfit options and love their purchases.

Once you’ve invested in the right pieces, colors, and fit, you’re ready to take on any business trip in style.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Our Essential Women’s Business Travel Packing List

Screenshot Of An Instagram Story Advising To Focus On Core Colors When Packing For A Business Trip

In our opinion, you don’t need a completely new outfit for every single day of your trip. The most efficient way to approach what to pack for a business trip is to stick to core colors.

Core colors are black, grey, navy, and white. These neutral shades are versatile enough to endlessly mix and match with each other. For example, with 4 pants, one in each core color, and two tops, you can create 8 different outfits.

Core Colors Triangle with three sections for colors of a closet

You can always add a piece or two in a tonal color (shades of core colors) or an accent color. However, those items should be the minority of what’s in your suitcase.

Here are our clothing recommendations on what to pack for a business trip, item by item:

Tops  – Blouses/dress tops – Casual/t-shirt tops

Bottoms – Denim – Non-Denim options like trousers, slacks, skirts

Dress (If you wear them.)

Layering Pieces (Depending on the climate.) – Sweaters – Blazer – Coat/Jacket

Shoes (Depending on the length of your trip, the MAX amount you should bring is 3.) – Dressy sneakers – Flats – Heels

What to Pack for a Business Trip: FAQs

If you’ve got lingering questions about what to pack on a business trip, keep scrolling for our travel FAQs.

I always overpack, how can I stop doing this?

This all starts with how you approach shopping and building your wardrobe at large. If you have versatile, well-fitting, essential pieces in your wardrobe, you won’t feel the need to over-pack.

Declutter your closet of unnecessary items, and stick to pieces you’ll wear again and again and easily mix and match.

Then, when it’s time for your trip, consult your itinerary and map out exactly what you’ll need for each day. Don’t give into bringing pieces on the off-chance that you’ll unexpectedly need them.

I mean, you’re not bringing every single item from your work desk to your business trip, right? Apply the same thinking to your clothing.

How do you pack for different climates?

Two words: Light layers.

Start off with one essential piece you’ll need for each climate.

Here’s an example. Starting your trip in arid Phoenix, Arizona? Grab a classic tank top in a core color. Next stop: always foggy San Francisco? Block out the bay breeze with a cashmere cardigan. Heading to Toronto in the wintertime? Pack a timeless black or grey coat.

Pair these items back to business-ready trousers or pants and you’re ready for anything.

Is there a set number of clothes you should bring on a business trip?

No. It all depends on the length of your trip, your itinerary, and even the industry you’re in. The packing list above will give you a good baseline to start at. Customize it to fit your needs.

What about non-work clothes for when you’re off the clock on your trip?

No trip is all business all the time. It’s okay to bring a couple of non-workwear items IF (say it with us) you know you’ll wear and need them .

For example, if you’ve scheduled yourself to hit a nearby nature trail on a free morning, go ahead and pack one workout look.

In fact, if you’ve followed all the above steps, you should have room in your suitcase for necessary off-the-clock pieces.

10 Chic & Stylish Travel Outfit Combinations That You Can Easily Recreate *Including Packing Tips*

Stylish travel outfits.

Do you have any travel planned over the next few months? Chances are, you probably have some sort of trip planned! If so, this post is for you! We travel quite a bit so it’s safe to say I’m a pro in this area. I’m frequently asked what to wear on travel days specifically so below, I’m sharing simple, stylish travel outfit combinations that you can easily recreate when you take your next trip! Plus, some important packing tips I’ve learned along the way…

By the way, if you’d like to see more outfit ideas and hear even more amazing packing tips, check out the corresponding video here .

Stylish Travel Outfits for women

#1) Sweatsuit

Today’s sweatsuits are a far cry from the Juicy sweatsuits we saw in the early aughts! The sweatsuit options now can look very chic, sophisticated, and like “regular” clothing. They’re also extremely comfortable, which is especially important if you’re on an overnight international flight and need to get some sleep or just want to be comfy on your next road trip.

The sweatsuit I’m wearing above is from the Spanx AirEssentials collection and I love it so much I have it in green, black, and a pretty beige color. What I love about these pieces is that they’re very chic, super lightweight, breathable, and SO comfortable. They also come in petite, regular, and tall length options and in cropped or full-length (I’m wearing a petite small). The pullover and pants are also wrinkle-resistant…a must for travel! If you don’t already have a comfortable sweatsuit that you love, I can’t recommend this set enough!

Note : You don’t have to wear a matchy-matchy set like this. If you have a pair of black joggers you love and a comfy sweater you love…pair those together for a similar look!

I talk more about this set and the AirEssentials collection in this post . AND…use code ERINXSPANX to get 10% off these pieces!

Activewear Stylish Travel Outfits

#2) Activewear

Next up is activewear! You’ve probably seen on your Instagram, the typical influencer travel uniform of leggings, blazer, sneakers, tee, and baseball hat. That’s a super cute look but it’s not personally my style. How I would do activewear when I travel is to wear wide-leg pants like these by Beyond Yoga. They look elevated, sophisticated, and not like traditional activewear. I paired it with the matching camisole and a cute wrap front cropped sweater so you still get that matchy activewear feel… just a bit more elevated.

Cargo Pants & Top

#3) Cargo Pants & Top

Cargo pants are comfortable and casual and are a step up from leggings or sweatpants. These pants are from Banana Republic and I love the fit, length, and utility-inspired details. If cargo pants aren’t your style, consider some more casual jogger-style pants instead. Either way…cargo pants, joggers, or trousers are a great alternative to jeans while you’re sitting on the plane.

For travel shoes, I typically like to wear closed-toe shoes like sneakers or booties but it’s totally up to you! If you prefer toe wiggle room, run hot, or are going somewhere tropical, you might want to wear sandals instead. I like to look at the shoes I’m packing and wear the bulkiest pair on travel day, so I have more room in my suitcase! And I never…NEVER…wear heels for travel days. Anyone else ever have to run through the airport to catch a flight??

Jeans & Top

#4) Jeans & Top

The next travel uniform that’s so simple, accessible, and easy to recreate from pieces in your own closet is jeans and a top! Jeans and a top with either sneakers or boots are my go-tos almost every time I travel. In the look above, I’m wearing a pair of Mother jeans that has the perfect inseam for me, a high rise so I feel secure but not uncomfortable, and a wide-leg silhouette. On top, I’m wearing a billowy top that doesn’t cling to the body and is comfortable and forgiving. If you’re going to go this route, try to pair your jeans with a top that’s a basic-with-a-twist to add some interest to the look. For example, this top has pretty crochet detailing at the neckline and fun bell sleeves. I’m wearing a pair of Rag & Bone sneakers in this look, but you can wear whatever sneakers you love or some booties to dress it up… just make sure they’re breathable, comfortable, and it’s not your first time wearing them. Travel is never the time to break in a new pair of shoes!

By the way, I’m sharing even more helpful tips in this corresponding video in case you’re interested!

Cropped Blazer & Jeans

#5) Cropped Blazer & Jeans

Next up is the cropped blazer and jeans combo. I run cold and for some reason, I’m really cold on planes and in airports. So, I love to have layers I can throw on or shed depending on how I’m feeling. Packing light layers is so important anyways, to ensure a properly functioning travel wardrobe.

I didn’t have a great picture of this outfit but still wanted to share it. Plus, you can see it in motion in the corresponding video . I’m wearing a tan cropped blazer from Mango that’s older but still a go-to for me, so I linked a similar option. Underneath the blazer, I’m wearing a white ruched tee (another basic-with-a-twist we’ve talked about!). I also threw on a scarf because it looks so chic, and it’ll keep me warm…fashion and function! Pair your blazer and tee with your favorite comfortable jeans and sneakers or booties and you’re ready to go in a chic, pulled-together travel outfit! I’m wearing my go-to Chloe sneakers I’ve worn on SO many trips since they’re just so comfortable, stylish, and versatile. They also have a little platform for some added height, which is a win in my book!

By the way, we shared an EPIC travel capsule wardrobe in this post that’s a must-read after you’re done with this post!

Long Blazer & Jeans

#6) Long Blazer & Jeans

Similar to the last look, wear a long blazer versus the cropped one. A longer blazer is a little harder to wear for petite women, but all you have to do is leave it unbuttoned and half-tuck your top into the front of your jeans to help elongate your look and balance the proportions.

In this look, I’m wearing a pair of Moussy Vintage jeans, which is one of my favorite denim brands because the washes are beautiful, the fit is perfect, and most of the styles are a little shorter…perfect for petite women (I’m 5’4” for reference). I paired the jeans with a basic white tee and this pretty off-white oversized blazer. I love the oversized fit for easy layering over anything you’re wearing or have packed. On my feet, I’m wearing a pair of Golden Goose sneakers that are the perfect combination of comfy and stylish. For my full review of Golden Goose sneakers, make sure you check out this post next.

Tip: Don’t ever wear a travel outfit that doesn’t function with the rest of your travel wardrobe. Whatever pieces you wear on the plane or in the car should be pieces you can wear again later in the trip with what’s already packed in your suitcase.

Light Jacket & Jeans

#7) Light Jacket & Jeans

This is another go-to travel uniform for me and it’s a great way to show that you can alter your travel uniform to whatever works for you and feels like your style. Your lightweight jacket could be a cargo jacket, bomber, leather jacket, denim jacket, etc. In this look, I’m wearing a Veronica Beard utility jacket that I bought for our trip to Africa and have been wearing nonstop! It’s such a gorgeous statement piece but again, you can wear whatever jacket works for you. I paired it with the same formula we’ve followed for the past few looks…chic jeans, a tee, and comfortable sneakers. In the photo, I’m wearing sandals but for travel, I’d swap it for sneakers or booties.

Trench & Jeans or Pants | Stylish Travel Outfits

#8) Trench & Jeans or Pants

You have to be careful when it comes to wearing longer coats or jackets during travel because you don’t want to risk having anything drag on the floor while you’re walking through the airport or in the ladies’ room! But a mid-length coat is usually perfect. I personally love how pulled together and sophisticated a trench looks and how it can completely elevate any outfit. Plus, it’s usually a great piece to have with you while you travel. But you could also go with a cardigan or wool coat depending on your style, the weather where you’re traveling, and how you’re planning to wear it during the rest of your trip and with pieces you have packed.

Tip: When you’re packing, make sure to stick to a color story so that everything mixes and matches effortlessly. I like to stick to neutrals like beige, white, tan, black, etc., and only include 1-2 “special” pieces that are outside of my color story.

All Black Stylish Travel Outfits

#9) All Black

An all-black travel outfit will work for pretty much any destination and especially if your travel wardrobe color story includes black. In the look above, I’m wearing a chic black sleeveless sweater and some paper-thin black leather pants that I wore on a recent trip to California. These pants are super lightweight and breathable but you could easily swap these out for a pair of black jeans, joggers, leggings, trousers, cargo pants, or whatever you feel best in. On my feet, I’m wearing a pair of See by Chloe combat boots I’ve had for years and really love! They’ve been “on-trend” for years so I don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon. Plus, they’re SO versatile, comfortable, and lightweight.

Cool Pants & Blazer travel outfit idea

#10) Cool Pants & Blazer

This is a bit of a wildcard but it’s such a fun look that I just had to share! I’m wearing a pair of Me+Em houndstooth wide-leg pants. They have a comfy elastic waistband, are super comfortable, and the length is great on me. I paired them with a basic black tee, an oversized black blazer by IRO, and combat boots. Throughout this post, you probably noticed the pattern…jeans + top + outerwear. This outfit breaks the mold a little bit and just adds some interest and fun to the mix!

What to Wear on an Overnight Flight: Best Travel Day Outfits (2024)

What to wear on an overnight flight - women's traveling day outfits collage

Our 2014 flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg was a staggering 16+ hours, earning it the title of longest nonstop flight at that time. But now there are nonstop flights from New York to Singapore (18.5 hours), Melbourne to Dallas (17.5 hours) and Dubai to Auckland (17+ hours). Whether you opt for one of these long-haul flights or prefer to book connecting flights, it’s evident that many travel destinations will require hours and hours in the air. What you wear on a long or overnight flight can make or break your trip. In this post I’ll go over what to consider in picking your travel clothes and suggest airplane outfits for women over 50.

You’ve planned your itinerary, booked your flights, and are looking forward to the big trip. But now you’re faced with a long day (or two!) of travel. It’s time to prepare for the flight! Time to load up your airline personal item with comfort items, and activities to keep you occupied. And time to choose what you’ll wear on the plane.

What to consider in your travel day outfit

Whether you’re on a business trip or a bucket-list vacation, the best airport outfits will meet the following criteria:

  • Comfort – The most important thing about your travel clothing should be comfort. Choose clothing that feels good and allows you to move easily. You DO NOT want to be wearing tight or fussy items on a long flight.
  • Practicality – Next up comes practicality. Avoid clothing that’ll stain if turbulence causes a drink to spill. Or clothing that doesn’t breathe and retains odors (synthetic fibers). Natural fibers and dark colors are the best choices.
  • Versatility – Frequent flyers know to expect a wide variety of temperatures. Being prepared to add or remove layers is one of the most important things to remember.
  • Efficiency – If at all possible, choose your traveling clothing from your travel capsule wardrobe . Pick comfortable clothing you’ll wear again at your destination.
  • Appearance – No need to dress up, but you can be comfortable and look good. And who knows? The flight attendant might upgrade you to business class or even first class if you look the part.

Travel day clothing challenges

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can be a life-threatening development on a long plane ride. This happens when blood clots form in the deep veins of the legs when you’ve been sitting for long periods. Though this becomes more of a risk as you get older, all passengers should make sure to get up and walk around on a long haul flight to get the blood circulation going. If you’ve noticed ankle swelling on past trips, or have a history of DVT in the family, be sure to wear a pair of compression socks even on short haul flights.

Airport security lines – unless you have TSA precheck, or similar, you may need to remove jackets, jewelry, belts, shoes, etc., before going through the screening. Make it easy on yourself, but avoiding items that might set off alarms. The best travel outfits don’t have metal zippers, clasps, etc., and are easy to layer up or down.

Airplane bathrooms – Bathrooms on airplanes are challenging on a short flight, but on a long haul flight, the bathrooms may get nasty. Don’t go barefoot and be careful of clothing that might touch the floor when you’re in the washroom.

Dry air – This will not affect your travel outfit, but be aware of the dryness, and stay moisturized. Keep lip balm in your pocket so you can apply it often. Wear glasses instead of contacts to avoid eye irritation.

My key pieces – airplane outfits for women over 50

🌱 NOTE : Before buying anything new, look to see what clothes in your closet will fit the characteristics of a good travel day piece. If you’re still missing comfortable travel clothes, consider shopping your local consignment shop .

Bottoms :pants, leggings, skirts

I always wear comfortable pants, leggings, or yoga pants when I fly. Mostly because I need to stay warm, but also for the practicality a pair of pants offers when you’re dashing through airports or struggling with luggage. The best pants are soft and have an elastic waist. Bonus points for zipped pockets. The Venice travel pants from Athleta (a certified B Corp.) and the dressy sweatpants from Encircled (another company with a commitment to sustainable clothing) fit both qualifications and are my go-to travel day options. If I’m wearing a dress or tunic, I’ll choose Wool& merino wool leggings as a base layer.

Airplane outfits for women over 50 - what to wear on a long flight. Outfit shown - leggings, merino wool tunic, cardigan.

Tops : tees, blouses, dress

A dark-colored top with long sleeves is my choice. Pick one that’s wrinkle resistant and easy-care in case of travel spills and mishaps. I choose a merino wool top or tunic which I know I’ll be able to wear again during the trip. The best travel clothes are made of natural fibers. Merino wool, a natural fabric, is temperature regulating and odor resistant and is a good idea for air travel. Depending on my travel plans I might wear a soft, comfortable travel dress for the flight. Paired with leggings, a dress can be the ideal airplane outfit for women over 50.

Toppers : sweaters, wraps, jackets

Always have layering options on a long overnight flight. Your body temperature drops when you fall asleep, and you’ll want a lightweight sweater or wrap.

I’m loving my lightweight Julahas cape which has taken the place of my much-loved DKNY Cozy. Julahas are handwoven using traditional techniques in the Himalayas. I appreciate their commitment to sustainability and ethical fashion. And I appreciate that they let me offer YOU a 10 Euro discount if you purchase through this link – Julahas.

Some people pack a travel blanket in their carry-on bag, but I prefer to tuck an extra cozy sweater in my underseat bag . I can grab it mid-flight without having to access the overhead bin and drape it over my legs. My current favorites are Athleta’s long cardigan (Pranayama Wrap) and the Minkey Wrap by Diane Kroe. Both can be compressed in a packing cube to take up little space in your bag. A light jacket is also a great addition to stash in your bag.

Slip-on shoes, ballet flats, or other comfortable shoes are ideal for long haul flights. High heels are just not practical for air travel and might result in a fall when you’re navigating the jet bridge with your luggage.

But my #1 packing light strategy is to always wear your heaviest shoes on the flight. So, if I’m off on a hiking holiday, I’ll be wearing hiking boots. Not the best option for long flights, so in that case I’ll include a pair of slippers in my carry-on bag and change into these after I’m settled on the plane. Please don’t go barefoot on a plane, especially if you’re heading to the washroom…

Airplane outfit extras:

  • A pretty scarf can tie your entire outfit together and create a stylish look. Choose one with some substance and you can also use it as a light wrap or sleep mask on the flight.
  • Wear (or pack in your carry-on) a park of warm socks (or fuzzy socks) if you’re hoping to sleep.
  • Don’t forget face masks, a sleeping mask, and other long flight essentials .

What NOT to wear on a long flight

Sometimes the easiest way to choose what to wear is to consider what NOT to wear! Pack these items for your trip, but avoid them on travel days.

Air travel, especially red-eye and overnight flights, can be challenging. But the clothes you’re wearing shouldn’t add to the difficulty of a long travel day. A week or two before your flight, look through your packing list to select practical items that’ll keep you comfortable during the flight. Choose items you enjoy wearing – items that flatter you and that you reach for at home. You can look good, and feel at home, even on a long flight!

This post is part of our  Travel 101  series of posts that will prepare you for your trip. If you’re just beginning to plan, I’d suggest you start with the first in the series –  Pack Light, Travel Easy

Ha! But aren’t you glad you did that trip in the 90s? Have a great hike in Japan!
