Why are travel vaccinations important?
Travel vaccinations are designed to protect you from catching infectious diseases which might not be common in your home country. These diseases can be serious or even fatal in some cases. It is therefore important to get the recommended vaccines to protect yourself.
Some countries require certain vaccines as an entry requirement. For example, some African and South American counties require a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Another example is the Meningitis ACWY vaccination certificate for anyone traveling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah.
It is also important that your vaccinations are up-to-date for your travel insurance policy to be valid. Most insurance providers will require you to have the required/recommended vaccinations. Check with your travel insurance provider, if unsure.
Which travel vaccines do you need to go travelling?
The vaccinations recommended for your trip depend on several factors, this includes:
- Your travel destinations
- The nature of your trip
- Your past immunization history
- Your medical history
Book a travel clinic consultation with one of our travel health experts who will assess your travel vaccination requirements and create a personalized vaccination plan for you.

When You Travel
- Remember to take out adequate insurance cover for your trip.
- If you have any pre-existing medical conditions make sure you inform your insurance company and check the small print of your policy thoroughly.
- Make sure that you take an adequate supply of your regular medications and order from the surgery well in advance. Carry your medications in your hand luggage in their original packaging and if you are flying with sharps and /or controlled drugs you may wish to ask for a “flying with needles” letter from our receptionists to show to your airline at check in.
- Remember that most medications need to be kept at a temperature below 25°C or possibly refrigerated – make plans for how you will do this.
- Some countries do not allow certain medications – check the NHS website and contact the Embassy of the country to which you are travelling if you have any doubts.
- If you are travelling to a European country make sure you obtain an EHIC Card (and check that it is valid as they do have an expiry date). Further information about EHIC is found on the NHS website
While You Are Abroad
- Only drink water you know to be safe. If you do not know the water is safe only drink boiled water, bottled or canned drinks or water treated by a sterilising agent. Remember that this might include ice in your drinks and water for brushing your teeth.
- Keep hydrated – drink extra fluids in a hot climate and be aware that alcohol can make you dehydrated.
- Remember to take sensible precautions in the sun to prevent sunburn and heatstroke and always use a sunblock which contains both UVA and UVB protection and sufficient SPF. Children under 3 years should have a minimum of SPF 25 and babies under 6 months should be kept out of the sun at all times. Reapply often and always after swimming and washing.
Common Illnesses Abroad
The most common illness you will be exposed to is diarrhoea. This can be caused by eating and/or drinking food and water contaminated by bacteria, viruses and parasites. There is no vaccine against it and usually lasts for 2-4 days and whilst not a life threatening illness, it can disrupt your trip for several days. The main danger of this illness is dehydration. You can buy over the counter rehydration solutions such as dioralyte or electrolade to take with you. Antidiarrhoeal tablets can be used for adults but should never be used in children under 4 years of age and only on prescription for children aged between 4 and 12.
If you are taking the oral contraceptive pill you should be aware that you may not have full protection if you have diarrhoea and vomiting and extra precautions should be taken.
Insect bites are common and can be the cause of various diseases including malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever. Some insects bite only at night but protection is needed at all times. The best advice is to avoid being bitten by covering up your skin as much as possible in at risk areas and use insect repellents on exposed skin (DEET containing products are the most effective – with a DEET content of up to 50% in tropical areas being recommended).
Rabies is present in many parts of the world – avoid touching any animal, even cats and dogs. If you are licked on broken or scratched skin wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for 10 to 15 minutes and apply an antiseptic solution and seek medical advice immediately, even if you have been previously immunised. If you are bitten you must seek urgent medical attention.

A huge vaccination programme is underway across the country, dubbed the biggest mission bestowed upon the NHS in history.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has vowed to get the two approved vaccines into the arms of hundreds of thousands of people, daily, by the end of the month.
Addressing the public, he plucked a target of reaching 15 million people by February 15 - just over a month away.
He said the government and the NHS were 'truly throwing everything at' the UK-wide roll-out.

By the end of this week, he revealed there will be more than 1,000 GP sites, 223 hospital sites, seven giant vaccination centres and 200 community pharmacies delivering the vaccine.
And now a full list of hubs and centres has been unveiled by the Kent and Medway CCG.
Despite the locations now being revealed, people have been reminded that these are not walk-in clinics.
Patients should only arrive at a vaccination booth if they've been invited.
Among those at the top of the priority list are the clinically vulnerable, elderly, care home residents and front line workers.
A statement from the CCG said: "More hospitals hubs, primary care services and large vaccination centres will open across Kent and Medway as further supplies of the vaccine become available.
"There will also be services taking vaccines out to housebound patients and care home residents.
"All Covid-19 vaccinations will be provided through booked appointments."

Covid vaccination boosters available in Tunbridge Wells
A double-decker bus offering Covid vaccines to eligible patients has arrived in Tunbridge Wells.
The NHS ‘Health and Wellbeing’ bus, which started operating at the Notcutts garden centre in Pembury on October 2, will be offering eligible patients the opportunity to protect themselves from Covid-19.
Up until now, many of the town’s residents had complained they were unable to get a Covid jab locally, with the nearest vaccination point in Crowborough. Many locals had contacted this newspaper expressing frustration at having to travel further afield ( Times , October 4).
Christina Pagel, Professor of Operational Research at University College London, said that a new wave of Covid appeared to be underway, which was possibly driven by waning immunity and new variants of Omicron, the most common strain of Covid.
According to the most recent government data, between September 17 and September 23, 12,187 people had a confirmed positive Covid test result. This was an increase of 13.7 per cent on the previous seven days.
A spokesperson for NHS Kent and Medway said: “The Covid-19 vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones.
“Eligible patients can have a vaccination at our Health and Wellbeing bus at Notcutts garden centre. No appointment is necessary.”
It was also revealed that another site will be offering vaccines elsewhere in the town later this month.
“We will make an announcement with details soon,” the spokesperson said.
The bus is managed by NHS Kent and Medway’s Vaccination Programme Team and is part of the NHS plan to provide vaccination services for all areas.
No appointment is needed as long as you’re eligible for the Covid-19 autumn booster jab.
The converted double-decker bus will be open at Notcutts six days a week (Monday to Saturday) from 10am to 4pm, until November 4.
