Food and ambience, location and contact.

We went for New Years day lunch, food took 45mins and only 5 out 6 meals arrived! we waited further 8mins for the final meal to arrive. Food was good but the wait wasn't acceptable especially with no apology and we had to prompt the... waitress on where our food was. I would suggest if you book ask for a table in the conservatory as there is a fire in there, the bar area at the front was cold. We were disappointed with our overall experience as it isn't bar meal prices! More

We have visit the Travellers Rest on several occasions (couples, friends, family) and it’s never let us down. We had Sunday lunch here on my 40th Birthday and it was beautiful. If you’re looking for somewhere consistent that makes delicious food at a reasonable price,... look no further. Highly recommended! More

A family gathering in the holiday period. Fourteen met for Sunday lunch. We all chose starter and main as we were meeting later for cake and wine. The pink beef was very good as was the turkey dinner. My prawn cocktail was nice but my... wife’s smoked salmon pate starter wasn’t the same as in previous visits. That left The Mrs very disappointed. There was no way of knowing that the pate had been changed as the menu was the same. I guess this is one of the challenges of feeding regulars as well as travellers. We spot differences others may not. Service was lovely and friendly as always. Two suggestions as feedback. Please bring bread with prawn cocktails. While I wasn’t fussed others at the table were. Also please consider offering main course condiments when redoing the cutlery. Asking who wants mustard or horseradish after the food has been delivered just delays the eating time further (and it takes a while to deliver 14 main courses). Makes it more pleasurable for the diner if you can fit it in. Thanks again More

We decided to give this place a try as it had been a long time since we were here, Upon entering it felt a bit cold and unwelcoming however we stayed and were shown to a table by a nice helpful lady who took our... orders. The drinks arrived promptly however our food orders took around 40 minutes to arrive, despite there not being many customers in. We ordered cod & chips and beef sandwich & soup , whilst the fish was tasty it looked like it had come out of the freezer, the chips were over done and in short supply. I expected more for £13.50. The beef sandwich which was shredded and not sliced beef as we thought it would be for £7.50 was served in a ciabatta bun, again this was nice but we Felt not very good value for money. Judging by the positive reviews maybe we were unlucky however we won't be rushing back. More

We've visited this pub a few times before but never for sunday lunch. We ordered beef rump and beef feather blade. The wait was atleast 30 minutes and one of the meals was cold and had to be sent back. The replacement came quickly. The... food itself was tasty but the portions were small. For £12 per meal it's more expensive than most others in the area. The side of veg was also very small, only one slice of carrot each. Although the meat itself was lovely it wasn't enough to tempt us to go back again for Sunday lunch as the rest was disappointing. More

We are so lucky to have this pub and restaurant in the village. My partner, who is very demanding when it comes to eating out, just loves the place and the meals that the chefs prepare. We have eaten there many times, and make a... point of inviting friends to eat with us at The Travellers. The food is always good, and if you happen to be around on a Thursday evening, there is a menu which offers two courses for £30, and includes a bottle of decent red or white wine. If you are in the area, or want a trip out, then you should visit. If you come for lunch, then there are great walks by the River Browney to give you an appetite. I know that this sounds like an advert, but we just love the village and the pub. Anthony and Fran More

Called in a couple of times now for Sunday Lunch and it never disappoints. First time had lamb and chicken which were beautiful. Second time we tried the belly pork which was also excellent, last time we had the featherblade of beef which is amazing.The... staff on all occasions were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. We always book early for this day, there are always big parties who call in without booking and the team always try to make seating arrangements for them so as not to disappoint. More

Found this pub on a dog friendly Facebook page and it’s such a good find. You need to mention when booking a table you’ve got a dog with you so they can seat you in the right area; we didn’t but they moved us quickly... and we were made to feel very welcome. The Sunday lunch was one of the best we’ve ever had; the belly pork just melted in your mouth and there was plenty of food. Service was excellent from everyone we interacted with and our dog was made very welcome too and water provided. We will definitely be returning despite not living very close by as it’s worth the trip! Thank you. More

We were staying at the farm Cottages down coach lane and the owner recommended this pub. I had already done My research and was aware this pub was rated favourably so had pre-booked a family meal on the Monday (50% off eat out help out)... and the steak night on Thursday. Both were amazing. Absolute taste sensations . Very impressive favours and presentation and also reasonable prices. Staff super friendly and Helpful. Enjoyed it so much that we have re booked the same cottage for Easter - so We can visit the pub again ! Thanks so Much. More

Great food and service, all 4 of us were very impressed by the quality of the meals and also the service. The only failing is that none of the staff were wearing any masks or face visors whilst taking orders very close to the customers. A... little off putting safety wise we all agreed. Would have been 5 stars excellent except for this point. More

Lovely lunchtime ‘eat out to help out’ lunch yesterday. I chose from the specials menu and had the most lovely prawn bhaji followed by the sea bream which was delicious. Husband had the Travs scotch egg followed by the chicken kiev, the chicken breast was... moist and huge and the sauce was delicious. Too full for dessert, which is unusual for us. More

My partner and I went to this restaurant after hearing some excellent reviews and we were not disappointed! The food was amazing, definitely some of the best we have had in Durham and the service was brilliant. I informed the waitress that my partner had... a but allergy and she was brilliant in going through all ingredients and the menu to ensure this was catered for (even offering alternatives if necessary). We will definitely be back and I would highly recommend to anyone looking for excellent food at a reasonable price. More

First visit- not the last! Food was incredible, the monkfish especially was out of this world. Young waitress was also very friendly and happy to recommend dishes. Oh and fantastic selection of beers my husband was very happy about. We will be back, I need... to try more of the menu. More

Heard about this place months ago, decided to give it a try with my wife for dinner. Food was fantastic, staff incredible, nothing was to much trouble. Credit to Peter and his team , through a real tough journey they are working harder than ever.... I have since visited around 30 times, never been dissatisfied with food, staff, surroundings, highly recommend as couples or family. Damn shame Boris has decided to lock us down again, going to miss my Sunday lunches. Can’t open quick enough. John and family More

We ate here last night whilst visiting friends .The meals were delicious ,I am vegetarian and the leek and cheese souffle was gorgeous as was my husband said his pork belly and friends fish dish.

More
