Trek 800 sport worth...?

Hi all, Brand new here, haven't ridden a bike in many years, but looking to get myself on something sort of cheap (price wise, not quality). I found this, TREK Bicycle , it looks really nice, but I don't know if it is worth that price ($95 obo). The seller doesn't know what year it is, but bicyclebluebook.com shows the 2002 version, the last year of this model, valued at $51 in like new condition. So I guess the real questions here are how much weight do those book values have, and what should I offer without insulting the seller? Anyone have experience with this model and a realistic value?

It just depends on what bikes are going for in your area, I wouldn't put too much stock in Bicycle Blue Book. It looks like it is in good condition. There are 3 on eBay, $160, $100 and $200, all "or Best Offer". Searching "sold" listings, $86, $147, $27, $100, $51. At least some of these were plus shipping. He's had it listed for 4 days, he's probably ready to accept less. Hth  

I had one in 2000 it was $199. Red. Rigid. Tinsel steel, with a cromoly fork. V brakes with Grip Shifts. Threaded quill stem and heavy handlebars. It was awful. I just HAD to put a suspension fork on it and a threadless headset and stem with a new handlebar. Today I'd give someone $50 if its in MINT condition, if not $35. This bike needs upgrades for any trail riding except for light riding like at parks or city trails. You will be putting your life in your old hands if you take it out to the mountains. Its only one notch better than a Walmart bike. For city riding, leave it alone. If you have further questions on this model, let me know. EDIT: If you search for the Trek 820, it comes with those upgrades, though not a great fork but entry level its better than the 800 Sport. At that time I was broke and I couldnt afford the 820.  

Honestly, I'd rather have the 800 over the 820. For most casual riding on street, smooth dirt trail, gravel, asphalt, and even lightly duty trails (1" rock garden stuff), I prefer a rigid steel fork over a cheap junk suspension fork. You get predictable control and feedback from a steel fork, vs. a pogo stick fork. For serious trail riding with rocks and roots, a proper suspension fork is preferred, but at this price point, I'd go rigid. After about 5 years, blue book value is useless. It's all about condition. I'd go 1/3 MSRP minus wear and tear. If it started at $240, I wouldn't go higher than $80. Probably much less if it had heavy use or was left outside to rot. Based on pictures, it looks OK though. Check it out, make sure the rims are straight, no notchiness rim rub feeling when you gently press the brakes when riding (aka no bent rims), tires are not dry rotted, shifting is good and doesn't go off the high or low ends, cables are not rusted and move freely (especially brakes when you let them go), wheels spin freely on their own for at least 20 seconds (hopefully more). No side to side wiggle in the cranks, wheels, or forks due to badly adjusted bearings. If all that is good, I'd go $80 max. Prefer $60.  

It doesn't sound like they plan to move on the price. Told me they sold a similar one in much worse condition for $70. I guess I'm too nice, because I always worry about offending people by offering too low. Any good general rules on how to low to go for an obo?  

Tell them exactly what you wrote here. You worry about offending people because you wouldn't want it done to you. Ask them what is the absolute least they would accept for it. I like the other person telling me that so I know if we are in the same ball park before I even make an offer. This way, you never wind up offering more than they would have originally taken.

Strong Frame, Balanced. Responsive and handles well.

It is heavy, but not too much.

Use this bike on the street. It is good for hauling you around. I use it on the weekends for the 3 mile ride to the store and also the 1 mile ride to the gym. I have ridden this thing since new. I bought it in 2000 and the stock seat was replaced after it was busted. It has handled good for me all this time and I had never brought it in for a tune up. If you are a racer or into crazy trail riding, stay away or you will have a bruised posterior.

New to the sport, so I didn't want to spend alot of money. So far, I have no complaints. The bike has handled many wrecks and is no worse for wear. Highly recommended for the beginner on a budget. I will probably upgrade to the Trek 4500 for the front suspension and rapid fire, my wife will start riding the 800.

Very smooth ride, gears shift very well, brakes are not are very good because they allow a person to go down a hill slowly without burning the tires, 5.0 lbs Steel cro-moly frame but very sturdy and smooth.

A very nice bicycle for people who are just begining to get off-road and also somthing that will race well to.

I have to give this bike four chilis for overall quality. It's a simple, solid bike for entry-level mountain biking and has reintroduced me to joys of being out on the singletrack. I ride this bike almost every day over very rocky, rooty, hilly terrain and it hasn't failed me. The trail might beat me up, but the bike has held up. The grip shifters can go, though. They make it very difficult and dangerous to shift while also applying brakes. As far as the weight goes, the bike is only noticeably heavy after trying other bikes. I just purchased a Jamis Dakota XC and I can't wait to get it out there to see how the same trails feel with the new bike. I'll always have a soft spot, though, for my trusty 800 Sport. Get this bike as your first mountain bike if you're only going to be hitting the hard trails occasionally. But if you get out in the woods more often and the trails are rocky, consider a Trek with front suspension.

IAM SURE THAT THERE ARE MANY BIKES THAT COULD FIT MY NEEDS AS WELL BUT AFTER SEARCHING VARIOUS STORES AND READING THE REVIEWS, TREK STOOD OUT AS THE BEST VALUE FOR THE MONEY AND THE BIKES LOOK GREAT TOO. it has a pretty strong frame. considering that it is cromoly it is pretty strong.

no suspension and not aluminum

it is a good beginners bike but I am starting to not like it anymore..... I am now starting to look into some rock shox jett and judy right now. but this bike does not brake or anything... I have not brought it in to get it fixed yet.... it has a really strong cromoly frame. and anyone who is just a beginner and is not a major mountain biker, this is the bike for you!

It took about a year, but with the upgrades, the bike is a hardtail without the harsh aluminum ride or stock ride. The parts on it are almost state of the art and the ride feels 100% better. The $240 bike is now worth a bit under $900 with its upgrades. This 800 Sport is a great entry level mtn. bike with lots of room for upgrades at your leisure. Why did I spend so much on this bike? I'll tell you why---TREK gives this bike's frame a LIFETIME GUARANTEE. The other aluminum ones that they make are waranteed for 5 yrs. Plus I like the way steel feels when going downhill--it flexes unlike aluminum.

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

Is Trek 800 Mountain Bike A Good Bike? [Trek bike Reviews]

The Trek 800 mountain bike was one of the first affordable mountain bikes produced by Trek, dating back to the 1980s.

Since then, the Trek 800 series has been constantly updated, with models such as the Trek 800 sport, Trek antelope 800, Trek 800 singletrack, Trek mountain track 800, and many more.

They still have the same frame design, with minor differences in the component combinations. This is a comprehensive review of the Trek 800 from Best Bike Select.

What are the features of the Trek 800, what are the pros and cons of the Trek 800, and what are the Trek 800 sport specifications?

What bikes are available for replacement? I will answer these questions one by one.

What are the features of Trek 800?

Sturdy steel frame (4.5/5).

The Trek 800 is built with a strong steel frame. Some reviews mention that they have been riding them for over ten years and that, while some parts have been replaced, the frame is still intact.

Early steel frame, low-cost construction, but strong and resistant to damage. It was widely adopted by bicycle manufacturers at the time.

After 1990, the aluminum frame became popular, but it was only available as a mid-range bicycle with a low retention rate.

The Trek 800 sold for around $300+ at the time, which wasn’t a high-end price, and it did a good job of keeping the bike stiff while riding, as well as keeping that feature in place for future use.

The aluminum frame is less fortunate; it can suffer from metal fatigue and shorten the life of the bike, but it is lighter and more comfortable to ride.

Speed number (4.0/5)

Because of the design of multiple versions of the Trek 800, but on balance they are between 18-24 speeds, the speed number is more than enough.

Can adapt to different terrain riding, low to medium Shimano accessories, sturdy enough. Riding 2000 miles without any problems.

26 x 1.95 inch narrow tires (3.5/5)

The entire Trek 800 lineup has 1.95″ wide tires. 26″ tires are slightly smaller than today’s popular 27.5″ and 29″ tires.

So when riding in the mountains, it can’t do true mountain riding. But it is indeed a mountain tire and has more grip than a normal bike tire.

Alloy Pull Cable Brakes (3.5/5)

The V-brake with alloy pull cable in line with the color of the times is not expensive to build but has a good braking effect and average braking travel.

Trek 800 sport specifications

What models are included in the trek 800 series, trek antelope 800.

This is one of the first Trek 800 mountain bikes on the market today. They are also difficult to find on used bike platforms these days, and the price is very low, making it popular among the first mountain bike riders.

The steel frame and alloy disc are the best examples of the new Trek 800, which will be released later.

Simultaneously, the Trek antelope 800 has a stellar reputation. Some riders were able to ride it when they discovered it in their warehouse, with only minor parts to replace.

At the time, a 3X5 speed configuration was also a more multi-speed mountain bike. However, the Trek antelope 800 lacked suspension.

The mountain riding experience isn’t particularly good, but because the price isn’t prohibitively expensive, it’s more commonly used as a commuter bike.

Trek mountain track 800

The Trek track mountain bike can be seen with very little information and may have been classified as a Trek 800 sport, but this is the first step in defining the Trek mountain track 800 as a mountain bike, despite the fact that it still lacks suspension.

The Trek mountain track 800 improves on the original’s comfort and uses Chromoly, unicrown crown to reinforce the frame’s strength. It is also limited to light trail riding due to the lack of suspension.

Trek 800 sport

The Trek 800 Sport was introduced in 1996 and is now the most well-preserved Trek 800 model.

The Chromoly body, Trek 800 rigidity, Hi-tensile steel fork, and current triathlon configuration are all optimized on the basis of the 1996 version.

Because it lacks a fork, it is not very comfortable for general mountain riding or riding on bumpy roads, but the narrower tires allow for acceleration when riding on gravel roads.

The same Trek 8 series mountain bike from ten years ago. But they are ten years apart.

Both the Trek 820 and Trek 800 have steel frames, but the Trek 820 uses Trek Custom Steel, which adds weight while retaining sturdiness.

The Trek 800’s 21 speeds are the same as the Trek 800’s in 2002. The alloy cable pull brakes are the same. The tire width has been increased slightly, but not significantly.

Except for the addition of a shock fork, not much has changed as a replacement for the Trek 820. The Trek 820 mountain bike is a good entry-level mountain bike that is still reasonably priced.

Trek Marlin 4 mountain bike VS Trek 800

For a lot of money, the Trek Marlin 4 could be called the Trek 820 (and I’m not the only one who thinks that).

The Trek 800 does not have subtle internal alignment, aluminum frame, or mechanical-disc brakes.

There are two styles of frames for men and women, so couples who like to ride together can choose together. There are 21 riding speeds to accommodate more terrain, as well as a lighter weight of only 30.82 pounds.

The Trek Marlin 4 is ideal for comfortable commuter rides as well as occasional mountain rides.
