From our travelers

Pints of Guinness

I loved the hotels, border collie herding, Irish coffee, as well as the Guinness and Smithwick’s tours. The tourist spots and local pubs gave a balance to the trip and I fell in love with the beautiful countryside and, most of all, the people I met in the pubs. Easily the best trip I have taken.

Julie halsey, can’t wait for my next one.

It was an amazing trip! Denis was the best driver/guide. The food was good and all of the tours and experiences were excellent. I am ready for my next trip!

Alec Edward Brown

Amazing trip.

Our driver Denis was awesome! Super fun and personable. The itinerary was great and loved the good mix of pubs, castles and scenery.

Jennifer Connett

Amazing trip.

All of the stops we did were great, the amazing weather helped but we saw everything we could've wanted to see. And had some great people on the tour to join us.

CIE Tours Customer

Great trip to ireland.

I was happy that we got around to see so much of Ireland. Everyone on the tour got along so well and we made new friends. Our tour guide, Leslie, was knowledgeable and did great job teaching us about Ireland

We liked everything about the tour with the exception of the food provided at the dinners. Most of the dinners were at the hotels we stayed at and were a pre-fixed menu. The selections each night were the same so by the end of the week, we were sick of the food. We would have liked to be on our own for the dinners and pay a little less for the tour. Also, a couple of the stops on the tour could be eliminated, such as the stop at a local store and the Marine Bar. The walking tour in Kilkenny was not very good, and the boat ride in Athlone was very mediocre-- the tour guides on the boat did not interact with the people on the tour and five info. about the area. The hotels were fine, and we really enjoyed the tour in Galway. Our tour guide, Patrick Joseph O'!Brien, was by far the best part of the tour-- he was very personable, funny and knowledgeable!

Experience the iconic Irish Pub on our Chauffeur Drive vacation that blends history, folklore, and a ‘wee drop’ of Ireland’s reknown pub culture.

Ireland Pub Tour:

Discover the dramatic coastal scenery of the uncrowded and charming Connemara region that maintains so many of the wonderful traditions of Ireland.  View the  majestic Cliffs of Moher and the  stunning Killarney National Park as your experienced driver/guide ensures a vacation that has your unique pace, interests, and schedule in mind.   Prefer to linger a bit here,  have “one more round” there – not a problem.  For inspiration, we’ve set out a sample itinerary below, but let us customize this tour for you to ensure you have just the sort of Ireland vacation you’ve dreamed of.

Pub Tour Itinerary

two pub tour

Overnight: Park House, Galway with breakfast included.

Today sit back and enjoy a scenic ride in the beautiful Connemara area.  You’ll see lovely coves, bays, and fishing villages   along the way.  There’s plenty of choices in the coastal town of Clifden to enjoy a pint and lunch.  Lowry’s Bar serves Connemara smoked salmon.  You might want to visit the Kylemore Abbey and Garden, or Cong; famous for the Quietman movie.  Back in Galway for the evening check out more of the pubs for an evening of “Craic”.  If you’re traveling through Galway Naughtons is a must-visit while you’re in town and come highly recommended by Isle Inn Tours’ resident “Galway Girl”. Naughtons is one of the best pubs in Galway city, located on the corner of Cross St. and Quay St. in the heart of the Latin Quarter. With it’s interior mostly unchanged since 1894 this pub is full of tradition and is regularly the scene of impromptu traditional music sessions. They serve a great pint of Guinness! And they stock over 130 whiskeys, so there’s another reason to visit.

Today you’ll continue your Pub Tour heading south to Killarney.  Don’t miss the iconic Cliff’s of Moher with their breathtaking 700 ft cliffs.  Close to the Cliff’s of Moher is the  historic mysterious Burren National park and the charming little town of Doolin where you’ll want to stop for lunch.  Continuing on to Killarney if time permits stop in at Foynes Flight Museum.  You’ll learn the history of how the first Irish Coffee in Ireland was invented and have the opportunity to enjoy one of the delicious brews.  Check into the Great Southern Hotel and get ready for another evening of fun in this exciting little town full of pubs.  The Whiskey Corner , Situated in a corner of the Punchbowl Bar has a whiskey tasting bar that is exquisite. Featuring over 190  of the world’s finest whiskies, you can try several with their whiskey flights (three samplings of whiskey, five different types of flights to choose from) No idea where to begin with whiskey? Don’t worry! The staff is more than happy to help you choose the perfect tipple.

Overnight: The Great Southern Hotel, Killarney with breakfast included.

There’s plenty to do in the Killarney area.  Perhaps you’ll start out with a jaunting cart ride.  You’ll have a hard time deciding on the beautiful Ring of Kerry or the gorgeous Dingle Peninsula.  Whichever you choose, your day will be full and you’ll have many pubs along the way.  If you choose the Dingle Peninsula you might want to check out Foxy John’s which comes highly recommended.  One side of the bar is a hardware store, the other is the pub!  Where else could you leave with a pound of nails after a drink!  It’s a must-see!

email now copy

Today you’ll be traveling from Killarney to Dublin.  There’s plenty to see along the way, but if you’re interested in castles, tell your driver you’d like to see Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny Castle.  The views at the “Top of the Rock” are breathtaking.  In Kilkenny you have lots of options.  You could visit the Medieval 12th century Kilkenny Castle, tour the Smithwick’s Experience and have a pint of Smithwick’s beer, or take a walking tour and see the beautiful stained glass windows of the Black Abbey.   When you arrive in Dublin say Good-Bye to your Chauffeur driver.  You’ll now be on your own to check out the plethora of pubs in Dublin.  The lively Temple Bar area on Fleet Street is a great place to start your pub tour of Dublin.

Overnight:  The Fitzwilliam  Hotel, 5 Star Dublin City Center

HISTORIC LONDON PUB TOURS

FOLLOWING THE END OF UK GOVERNMENT COVID RESTRICTIONS, OUR TOURS ARE NOW FULLY UP & RUNNING AGAIN

London Tavern Trails™ operates private pre-booked guided walking tours of London's historic pubs

★   To go on a London Tavern Tour, make a booking by e mail or phone, or book online using the "Book Now" buttons on this site

★   Meet on the pavement outside the designated tube station at the agreed time

★   A London Tavern Tour visits 4 historic pubs and lasts around 2½ hours

Our walks combine London, history, old pubs and real ale.

London is the most visited city in the world. Its rich heritage is embodied in its streets and buildings, its walls, rivers, gates, towers, squares, monuments and churches, and in its public houses. The pub is an integral part of London life and there is only one way to experience and enjoy the diversity of London and its pubs, and that is on foot. London Tavern Trails™ provides guided walking tours of London's historic pubs. Join an experienced guide from London Tavern Trails™, and you will:

✱   Visit the historic pubs of London

✱   Learn about their heritage

✱   Discover the history of the area and its inhabitants

✱   Find out about the origins of inns, taverns & public houses

✱   Savour England's national drink (=beer !)

London's pubs have fascinating stories to tell. London taverns of real antiquity are few and far between, but there are a handful of 16th, 17th & 18th century treasures, along with some fine Victorian and Edwardian inns. Our knowledgable guides have a life-long passion for London, its ale-houses and its history. Join them for a guided walking tour and drink in a piece of history.

England's national drink is beer and, more specifically, real ale. Real ale is a natural product brewed using traditional ingredients and left to mature in the cask from which it is served in the pub, through a natural process called secondary fermentation. It is this process which makes real ale unique amongst beers and develops the wonderful tastes and aromas which processed beers like lager can never provide. All real ales contain the same basic ingredients, but each real ale tastes different, according to the types of malt, hops, yeast and water used in the brewing process. All historic pubs visited on London Tavern Trails' walking tours serve these traditional real ales. But, by the way, don't feel obliged to drink real ale - the choice is yours : beer, lager, stout, wine, spirits, soft drinks or whatever takes your fancy.

But don't just take OUR word for it. See what others have to say about our historic pub tours by clicking on one of the Trip Advisor icons on the right of this page.

Our 4 classic tours (Holborn, Fleet Street, Covent Garden and Wapping) are detailed on this website. You can choose from one of these tours or a bespoke tour to suit individual requirements. Possibilities include the historic taverns of Belgravia, St. James's, Smithfield, Southwark or Westminster. A bespoke tour can include as few or as many pubs (within reason !) as you wish.

London Tavern Trails™ was founded by, and is owned and managed by John Edwards and Morris Jones. We both graduated from London Universities and have each spent the majority of our working lives in London. We have a passion for London and its rich history and for London pubs. We believe that real London pubs are unique pieces of living history which are central to an appreciation of the city and its bygone days.

The tavern tours take-in carefully selected historic pubs, which are often English Heritage listed buildings and often listed in CAMRA's National Inventory of historic pub interiors.

Each walk lasts around two & a half hours, which includes a number of refreshment stops en route in carefully selected historic pubs.

We will tell you about the history of each pub visited on the tour and inform you about the history of the local area. You will discover things about beer and brewing that perhaps you didn't know. All the pubs we visit serve real ale, as well as other beers, wines and spirits, and soft drinks. There is no obligation to buy a drink or spend money in any of the pubs we visit.

We welcome children of 14 years of age and over on our guided walks. Under UK Licensing Laws, children under 16 are allowed in pubs so long as they are accompanied by someone who is 18 years or over. But different pubs tend to have different rules, so please ask us in advance if you intend to bring a 14-17 year old on one of our tours. Children under 18 are not permitted to buy or to consume alcohol in a pub.

We are supporters of the Campaign for Real Ale. CAMRA campaigns for real ale and real pubs.

On this tour you’ll experience a warm Belfast welcome and its famous ‘craic’ in some of our oldest buildings, which are both historical and architecturally significant.

More so than anywhere, pubs in Belfast continue to play an important role in the social development of the city, they are places to which the regular customer and visitor, often feel a special attachment, where advice and wit are served in equal measure.

It would be rude not to drop in for a dram while enjoying some traditional Irish music

Savour a glass of fine wine

Pub Tours wins two Tourism Awards

Back in November we were excited to receive an email informing us that we had been shortlisted for a 2024 Peak District, Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Award in not one, but two categories! We were up for ‘New Tourism Business of the Year’ and ‘Experience of the Year’.

It felt exhilarating for our hard work and commitment to supporting rural pubs to be recognised in these prestigious awards designed to showcase excellence in the hospitality sector.

At Pub Tours we offer a highly unique, VIP experience for guests to taste, experience and be educated on the authenticity, history and culture of Peak District pubs. Our mission is to keep Peak District pubs alive by driving new business into hidden gems; offering visitors an educational, fun, experience of proper British pubs.

Tourism Awards are designed to showcase excellence and outstanding achievement by recognising the region’s finest visitor economy businesses, and are organised by Visit Peak District & Derbyshire in collaboration with Visit Derby as the region’s official Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP). We are proud supporters of Visit Peak District & Derbyshire and recognise what wonderful work they do in support of the local economy.

The awards are keenly contested. After shortlisting, there is mystery shopping and rigorous judging process by an independent panel of experts.

We pride ourselves on offering exemplary levels of customer service. Our knowledgeable guides offer a fun, informative commentary designed for guests to make treasured memories in the Peak District’s best pubs. People who join us on our tours always tell us what a great time they’ve had, but it was a nail-biting few months in the lead up to the results.

Pub Tours wins two Tourism Awards

On Thursday 7th March 2024 we got our glad rags on to attend the glittering awards ceremony held in the historic surrounds of the Museum of Making in Derby city centre.

After a drinks reception sponsored by the brilliant White Peak Distillery (whose craft spirits can be enjoyed in many of the pubs we visit on a Pub Tour) we enjoyed a delicious three-course formal dinner. It was wonderful to celebrate our achievements, and those of the sector as a whole.

Finally, it was time for the winners to be announced! We were beyond delighted to achieve a Silver award in New Tourism Business of the Year category and a Bronze Award in the Experience of the Year.

We work extremely hard to help people discover the true nature of Peak District pubs and understand the important role they play in British culture and society. We are passionate about the Peak District, it’s history and heritage and we love showcasing what a real British pub is to the rest of the world.

These two awards recognise our commitment to supporting tourism in the local area and fighting the extinction of the local pub. Thank you to all our hard working staff who made this possible. We would like to extend our warmest wishes and congratulations to all the other finalists.

How to make the most of Passport DC’s free embassy tours

two pub tour

Dozens of countries from Armenia to Zambia are hosting open houses Saturday during the annual Around the World Embassy Tour , one of those “only in Washington” events you’ll tell friends and relatives about. How often do you get invited into an embassy to explore its art collection, sample traditional cuisine, and watch free music and dance performances, let alone play cornhole in the Norwegian Embassy’s garden? Here’s a guide to planning for a successful day of globe-trotting without leaving D.C. Also, many of these tips are just as helpful on May 11, when the European Union hosts its annual E.U. Open House embassy tours.

  • Because the event is popular, lines are common, and they get longer at some of the better-known locations, such as the Korean Cultural Center at the South Korean Embassy, or the embassies of the United Kingdom, Jamaica and Thailand. If there’s a particular embassy you must visit, get there before doors open at 10 a.m. to improve your chances of getting in.
  • If you’re trying to visit a variety of embassies, pick a particular neighborhood to explore — maybe Massachusetts Avenue near Scott Circle, the string of embassies on Massachusetts northwest of Sheridan Circle, or the embassies dotted among the streets of Kalorama — and research the participants within a few blocks. That way, if you get tired of waiting outside one embassy, you can head to another, preferably smaller, destination nearby. Also, as veteran Around the World-ers will tell you, the embassies clustered around International Drive and International Court in Van Ness — China, Bangladesh, Egypt, etc. — are closer together and can be easier to get into than the ones on Embassy Row.
  • You don’t even have to go indoors to get a taste of a country: Some embassies offer outdoor live music, dance performances or, in the case of China, lion dances to entertain the crowds waiting to enter their buildings.
  • If you go to a busy neighborhood, try starting at the embassies that are farthest from the Metro station — people have a tendency to stop and get in line at the first embassy they pass. Walk past them, then work your way back.
  • For serious explorers, this is a good weekend to skip brunch. Participating embassies and cultural centers are open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and lines get longer as the day goes on. An early start will help you make it to the most locations — getting to five or six is a solid day of sightseeing.
  • Even if you plan well, you might be able to avoid lines at only a handful of embassies. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a phone charger and a book, just in case.
  • Carry cash or a credit card. While many embassies offer free samples of food or drinks, some also charge. Last year, the Embassy of Barbados handed out free sweets and had a chef preparing traditional Barbadian dishes as a teaser for the upcoming Barbados Food and Rum Festival. Everyone sitting on a chair in the embassy’s front garden watching the cooking demo got a two-bite hors d’oeuvre. But in the parking lot behind the embassy, there was a party raging: The ambassador was hanging out next to a DJ spinning upbeat carnival songs; a bar served potent rum punches ($6 each) and beer ($4); and a team of cooks was dishing up flying fish with rice and beans, oxtail platters, barbecued pig tails, and macaroni pie (main dishes $15-$35 with sides, smaller plates $1-$10). While the Barbados Association of Washington did have a credit card reader, that’s not true of every embassy we’ve been to.
  • Some embassies have marketplaces with art or textiles from native artisans. The Embassy of Kenya transformed the forecourt of its building into a showcase of baskets, clothing and jewelry; Ukraine House, the Ukrainian cultural center, had traditional Ukrainian fashions, nesting dolls and accessories for sale on tables in its garden.
  • Related: Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, grab the first free tote bag you see, because you’ll pick up plenty of tchotchkes, pamphlets and other gifts throughout the day.
  • Don’t be shy about asking what you’re in line for. The Dominican Republic hosted a veritable street party last year, with a DJ on its front porch and people dancing in the road. Depending on which way you approached the building, though, there were two very different lines: One was to access the indoor embassy tour, and the other was to purchase food and a rum tasting. You don’t want to get to the front of the line to find out you’ve spent 20 minutes waiting for the wrong thing.
  • Bigger isn’t always better. Some of the more popular embassies can be so crowded that you don’t really feel like you’re learning anything about the country. At an off-the-beaten-path embassy, such as the Embassy of Gabon, you have a better chance of getting face time with a staffer who can talk about the cultural uses of elaborate masks on display, or explain how national parks cover more than 10 percent of the country. (That’s about three times the percentage in the United States.)

The Around the World Embassy Tour is part of the month-long Passport DC program, and souvenir passports are available from booths near the Dupont Circle and Van Ness Metro stations; at the Mexican Cultural Institute ; and at the International City Food Festival , held at the Square food hall. Visitors can collect stamps while visiting embassies and cultural centers, though there’s no reward for filling the book.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Live nation, aeg bidding on *nsync reunion stadium tour after fan demand, *nsync live nation, aeg bidding on reunion stadium tour.

*NSYNC's appearances over the last year have stirred up so much excitement that two major tour promoters are bidding on a possible reunion stadium tour ... convinced the group could pack stadiums and be one for the history books.

Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ ... both Live Nation and AEG have thrown their hats in the ring, reaching out to the members of the popular boy band just a couple weeks ago to let the guys know they're down to explore the idea of a tour.

We're told their interest was piqued, especially after witnessing the love and support the group received last year when they reunited for a song in the latest 'Trolls' movie.

Our sources say the buzz surrounding their 2023 MTV VMAs appearance and their surprise cameo at Justin Timberlake 's L.A. show in March was the icing on the cake for the promoters.

Our sources say both promoters have presented the group with some serious financial numbers, although they would not be specific.

Our sources say the group is mulling over the offers, but we're told no decisions are close to being made. If the reunion stadium tour were to happen, it wouldn't be until 2025.

Lance Bass and Joey Fatone have been expressing their enthusiasm for a reunion. Remember, JT is currently focused on his solo music endeavors with his new album and 2024 tour, which doesn't wrap until December.

Stay tuned ...

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

A Santander online outage is affecting thousands of UK customers.

Over 2,000 reports have been made on Downdetector - indicting the issue is widespread.

Santander wrote on X: "We are aware some customers are experiencing issues accessing online services, we apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

"We're working hard to resolve this as soon as possible."

Following on from our previous post, and the OECD also says the UK will grow more slowly next year than any other major advanced economy.

It puts this down to stealth taxes and high interest rates squeezing the economy.

The organisation, which is based in Paris, downgraded its forecasts for GDP to 0.4% this year and 1% in 2025.

In February, the UK had been in the middle of the rankings with forecast growth of 0.7% this year and 1.2% next.

The OECD pointed to the fact "tax receipts keep rising towards historic highs" - with National Insurance cuts not offsetting the additional burden Britons are feeling due to tax thresholds not rising along with inflation due to a government freeze.

Some good news is expected for UK workers as the OECD said there will be "stronger" wage growth when inflation is factored in against pay.

One of the world's leading economic authorities has warned the UK that borrowing should remain expensive until the rate of price rises eases further and stays there.

Interest rates, which are at a  post-2008-era high of 5.25% , should stay there, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

"The fiscal and monetary policy mix is adequately restrictive and should remain so until inflation returns durably to target," the OECD's economic outlook for 2024 said.

It's an endorsement for the approach of the  Bank of England  whose statements on inflation have not indicated an imminent rate cut.

The OECD anticipates inflation will be "elevated" at 3.3% in 2024 and 2.5% in 2025 - above the Bank's 2% target.

No rate cut will come until at least August, the OECD added.

It may not come as a surprise, but the prices of a whole range of items fluctuate throughout the year.

It isn't always easy figuring out what is best to buy when - but a price comparison website has dug into the numbers.

PriceSpy has analysed its price history data to help direct shoppers to the best time of year to buy common, popular products.

This table should help:

Its analysis shows June is a great month to get yourself a lawn mower but if you're after a barbecue, you're best off waiting until December.

Organised parents can take advantage of LEGO price drops in September for Christmas presents.

PriceSpy estimates consumers can save more than £800 on the "peak pricing premium" by following its advice.

As a married couple of 53 years, all our accounts are in joint names - so do we need lasting power of attorney? Thank you! David

We asked Joanna Grewer, partner at Roythornes Solicitors, to respond: "If you have accounts in joint names then the account can be accessed by the person who has capacity.

"However, this won't entitle the capacitous person to deal with any of the income which comes into that account for the non- capacitous person, such as pensions, or to manage any outgoings in that person's name.

Online gamblers who lose £500 a month or more will face financial vulnerability checks.

Checks will come into force from 30 August.

The figure will reduce to £150 a month from 28 February next year.

The Gambling Commission said this would help identify acutely financially vulnerable online customers, such as those subject to bankruptcy orders or with a history of unpaid debts.

The checks will only use publicly available data and will not  require gambling operators to consider an individual's personal details such as postcode or job title.

As well as light touch checks, the commission said a pilot of enhanced assessments would go ahead, aimed at preventing cases where customers are able to spend large amounts in a short time without any checks, resulting in significant gambling harm.

It's not uncommon to feel uncomfortable with flying - but we'd probably all feel a bit better if we were sitting in first class, wouldn't we?

The lucky few might be able to pay for themselves, but for the rest of us, frequent flyer experts Flight Hacks have shared their top tips to get a free upgrade (and you can let us know your tips for getting upgrades in the comments box above)...

Stay loyal to one airline

Many airlines have a rewards scheme that offers free upgrades, early check-in and even free flights to loyal customers.

One research survey found 80% of staff said a customer in the airline's frequent flier scheme would be more likely to receive a free upgrade.

Plus, getting early check-in could place you first in line to secure a seat in the plane's front section.

Travel alone or during quieter times

Let's face it, a single person on an empty flight is much more likely to get an upgrade than a family of six on a booked-out plane.

Try flying in the middle of the week or at off-peak times to get a quieter plane.

Dress to impress

If you're dressed smartly and look like a frequent flier, this can boost your chances of getting an upgrade.

Business travellers are an airline's favourite type of passenger as they fly regularly and are more likely to spend freely on their company cards - so it could be worth dressing in business attire.

Don't be afraid to ask

It doesn't hurt just to enquire, as long as you're polite.

Be flexible

Airlines will frequently overbook flights to compensate for no-shows and ensure the planes are full.

If there aren't enough seats after everyone checks in, they will often offer incentives to passengers willing to switch to a later flight.

This can mean seat upgrades or cash incentives.

Take advantage of special occasions

If it's your birthday, honeymoon or a special anniversary, it could be worth casually dropping this into conversation with the check-in staff.

Be polite when checking in

Perhaps all of these tips should be caveated with the need to remain polite.

As there is often no strict criteria on how airline staff may choose to give out free upgrades, the number one tip is to be nice.

Travel expert Immanuel Debeer, from Flight Hacks, says "being respectful and friendly is by far the best way to increase your chances of an upgrade".

"There are plenty of simple tricks to increase your chances of getting an upgrade, but the most important thing to remember is that airline staff are human."

Every Thursday Savings Champion founder Anna Bowes  gives us an insight into the savings market and how to make the most of your money. Today she's focusing on  ISAs after new rules came in last month. ...

New ISA rules were introduced from 6 April that should make opening and funding ISAs simpler. But what many people may not realise is that ISA providers do not need to implement most of the new rules – and many haven't yet, or may have no intention of doing so.

As a result, savers have been left scratching their heads, unsure if their ISA provider will allow them to make use of the rules or not.

What are the key new rules?

Harmonise ISAs to those over 18:  This is not an optional change. The minimum opening age for adult cash ISAs is now 18, so not good news for those aged 16 and 17 who previously could have funded a junior ISA and an adult cash ISA.

Allowing multiple ISA subscriptions:  People should now be allowed to open and pay into multiple ISAs of the same type in a single tax year. Previously people could only pay into one of each type of ISA every tax year, unless their ISA provider offered what we called "portfolio ISAs".

A portfolio ISA (other names for this have been used such as "ISA wallet" with Paragon Bank) allows savers to open more than one cash ISA with the same provider in the same tax year - but only a small number of providers offer it, such as Paragon, Aldermore and Charter Savings Bank, Nationwide and Ford Money.

With the new rules, savers assume they can open more than one ISA with either more than one provider or with the same provider. However, our research has shown that while many providers will allow you to open another cash ISA with them if you have already opened and funded an ISA with someone else in the current tax year, this doesn't mean they have adopted the portfolio ISA rule – so you may not be able to open two ISAs with them.

Partial transfers allowed:  Partial transfers of ISA funds for the current tax year should be allowed, rather than being forced to transfer the whole amount of your current tax year ISA. Previously you could only make a partial transfer of old ISAs; you'd have to transfer the current tax year's ISA entirely.

Once again not many have adopted this rule yet.

The bottom line

So, while in theory these new changes should have made ISAs more flexible, in reality they have added an extra complication for savers and the bottom line is that you need to ask your existing and potential ISA providers about which of the rules they have adopted or are looking to adopt.

The pet supply retailer has opened two convenience stores in a move to branch out from its typical retail park sites.

The stores, which are in Sutton, south London, and Whetstone, north London, will sell a range of pet owner essentials and offer an advice counter.

They are much smaller than the usual Pets at Home stores and will not have the typical vet and grooming services.

Speaking to Retail Week, the chain did not confirm whether it would be opening more high street stores in the future.

Pets at Home Sutton store manager Rachel Etherington told the news outlet the location would "allows us to provide pet owners with convenient access to all their pet care essentials, as well as expert advice from our specially trained colleagues, right on their doorstep".

Wesley Bryan explains why he plans to use two 4-irons at CJ CUP Byron Nelson

1) He was the only player on the PGA TOUR using the brand, and,

2) The iron sets sell for just $649, a relatively lower cost than what his contemporaries typically use.

Flash forward to THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson 2024 at TPC Craig Ranch in Texas, and Bryan is still playing with a mixed Takomo set, except he’s added a new 101 U 4-iron, plus a Titleist T200 4-iron, and he’s dropping his 5-iron.

That bears repeating: Bryan is switching to an iron setup that consists of two 4-irons and no 5-iron.

On paper, that looks wrong, but when you look at yardage gapping instead of the number on the sole of the iron, things start to make more sense.

As Bryan explained to GolfWRX.com on Tuesday in Texas, his Takomo 301 CB 6-iron goes about 195-200 yards. Then, his new hollow-bodied Takomo 101U Driving Iron, which he recently started testing “a couple weeks ago” and bent about 2 degrees weak, goes about 220 yards, and the Titleist T200 4-iron goes about 235 yards.

Speaking on his new Takomo 101U Driving Iron, which sells for $119, Bryan had this to say:

“It’s super forgiving and launches high, and it has a bit longer of a profile to where it looks really good," said Bryan. "If people are willing to play something that doesn’t have an expensive price tag on their club, it outperforms the Srixon (driving iron). [I started testing it] in the last couple weeks and it’s in the bag.

“I just made it like 2 degrees weaker. Basically that gap from 205 to 225 I was in a little bit of a dead space, so I’m going to try and fill that gap better.”

For amateurs, take Bryan’s mentality about yardage gapping and club selection as a valuable lesson: It’s more about the yardages and performance than the number on the club, or even the price tag.

Bryan is also shaking things up this week on the greens, by switching into a new L.A.B. DF3 putter.

And how long has he been testing that putter?

“About 30 minutes, and it’s going in the bag,” Bryan told GolfWRX.com. “It’s so stable.”

Clearly, Bryan isn’t afraid to make last-minute adjustments to his equipment setup in the name of improvement. Based on his YouTube and social media followings, he also has a flair for entertainment.

Now, let’s sit back and watch how his latest equipment adjustments unfold as he takes on THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson 2024.
