Maputo is the capital of Mozambique, and it sits on the coast of the Indian Ocean. If you love history and want to see the preserved Portuguese neo-classical architecture, then Maputo is the place to be.

Maputo, Mozambique

In this Maputo, Mozambique travel guide, we will cover vital information you will be glad you had so you can have an outstanding vacation in Mozambique.

The city’s deep-rooted history dates back to the 1500s when it was only a fishing village.

Over the centuries after the explorer Lourenço Marques’s foundation, it transformed into a Portuguese colony and a critical port city. Upon gaining independence, it became the capital of Mozambique.

When to visit.

With its fusion of Mediterranean architecture and influences from African, Indian, and Arabic cultures, Maputo is the most cosmopolitan city of Mozambique and the Mozambican cultural capital.

It is suitable for visiting all year round since southern Mozambique is usually a milder rainy season. However, if you want to travel to the northern part of the country as well, you should consider visiting between May and September.

Top 10 Things to Do in Maputo, Mozambique (plus 1 you can’t skip)

Things to see in Maputo, Mozambique

Maputo was the first stop of my 10-day Mozambique itinerary last March. Two of my best friends live in the Mozambican capital and one of them was getting married, so this was the perfect time for a visit and a long-awaited friends reunion.

I spent a couple of days exploring the city, trying its delicious food, and just overall having a lot of fun. The result is this list of the best things to do in Maputo, Mozambique, to help you plan your own trip to this interesting, and largely underrated, African capital.

Things to do in Maputo, Mozambique

Table of Contents

Things do in Maputo:

#1 mafalala walking tour.

I really recommend starting your visit to Maputo by taking the Mafalala Walking Tour with IVERCA Association . This is a great introduction to the history of the Mozambican capital and the country itself. I truly learned a lot from Ivan, one of the founders of IVERCA and my guide during this amazing experience.

Mafalala is a historic neighborhood in the periphery of Maputo. During the Portuguese colonial occupation, native people from all over the country were brought here to build the new capital, Lourenço Marques. These black communities were forced to live in temporary constructions (that could be easily demolished, when their work was no longer needed) and were not allowed to cross the line that separated the “reed city” from the “concrete city” (reserved to the white), except for work.

Places to visit in Maputo, Mozambique

But Mafalala is also the heart of the country. It was the birthplace of the Independence Movement and a symbol of anti-colonial resistance. Some of Mozambique’s most prominent writers, intellectuals, politicians, and athletes were born or lived here.

Today, Mafalala continues to face problems of social and economic inequality and lack of basic infrastructures. But thanks to the work of organizations like IVERCA things are slowly starting to change.

Besides having a memorable experience, by doing a walking tour with IVERCA you’ll be directly supporting the association in its efforts to promote the socio-economic development of Mafalala and to preserve the rich culture and identity of its community.

Tourist attractions in Maputo, Mozambique

#2 Maputo Railway Station

Considered one of the most beautiful train stations in the world by several international publications, Maputo Railway Station is certainly one of the most gorgeous buildings in Maputo.

Built between 1908 and 1916, to replace the city’s first train station, Maputo Central Railway Station is a fine example of Beaux-Arts architectural style.

This sill active centenary train station is one of the best-preserved buildings in the Mozambican capital. Today, it’s also home to a railway museum and hosts musical and cultural events.

Maputo attractions - Maputo Railway Station

#3 Maputo Fortress

Built by the Portuguese as a defensive structure, the Maputo Fortress is now a military history museum and one of the most visited tourist attractions in Maputo.

Here are the remains of Ngungunhane, the last emperor of Gaza, a former state in the south of present-day Mozambique before the Portuguese colonial occupation. Ironically, a statue in memory to his captor, Mouzinho de Albuquerque, who would become one of the Portuguese governors of Mozambique, can also be seen here (the statue was originally in front of the Maputo city hall but was brought here after the country’s independence).

Maputo Fortress - things to do in Maputo, Mozambique

#4 The Iron House

The Iron House is one of the most peculiar Maputo tourist attractions.

Designed by Gustave Eiffel, this prefabricated house was created in 1892 to serve as the governor’s residence. But being made entirely of iron, it was too hot for the tropical climate of Mozambique.

The Iron House has had different locations and uses over time. Today, it can be found next to the Tunduru Gardens, on the Samora Machel Avenue.

#5 Independence Square

Maputo’s Independence Square, with its huge Samora Machel Statue, is one of the most iconic symbols of the city.

Right behind the statue of the first president of Mozambique, the impressive Maputo City Hall overlooks Samora Machel Avenue and the downtown. Classified as a cultural monument of Maputo, this Neoclassical building is the seat of the city government and can only be admired from the outside.

Independence Square - places to visit in Maputo

#6 Maputo’s Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is one of my favorite buildings in Maputo.

This simple white Catholic church was built of concrete and cement, resulting in a modern and striking temple.

Unfortunately, I didn’t visit its inside, but you should definitely have a peek if you can.

Maputo's Cathedral - things to do in Maputo

#7 Tunduru Gardens

The Tunduru Gardens are the green lung of Maputo and the perfect place to unwind from the city bustle.

Located in the center of the city, close to Independence Square, this pleasant public park and botanical garden is among the mandatory places to visit in Maputo.

I absolutely loved this place and almost had to be dragged out of there!

Feima is a craft, flower and gastronomy fair, where Maputo’s artists and artisans show and sell their unique work, from batik paintings to wooden handicrafts, from straw bags to the traditional capulanas (a colorful fabric traditionally used by the Mozambican women for the most diverse purposes: as a skirt, dress, towel, baby carrier, etc.).

There’s also a restaurant serving delicious local food, and a plant and flower market.

Reserve at least a couple of hours to stroll along all the craft stalls and do some souvenir shopping. Believe me, you’ll need it.

By shopping here you can be sure that you’re buying authentic (and beautiful) Mozambican craftwork and, at the same time, contributing to the local economy.

Feima - places to visit in Maputo

#9 Natural History Museum

There are many reasons to visit the Natural History Museum of Maputo. The first one being its eye-catching building in Neo-Manueline style, dating back to 1911.

Then there’s its remarkable collection of embalmed African animals, including the only collection of elephant fetuses in the world.

Last but not least, in the museum gardens, you can admire two murals by the well-known Mozambican artist Malangatana.

#10 Maputo beach

Maputo is not exactly a beach destination. There are better and more impressive beaches all over the country’s coast that you should certainly include in your Mozambique itinerary .

But while you’re here, have a peek at the lovely, white sand city beach. Stroll along the oceanfront avenue, enjoy the views over the Indian Ocean, visit the fish market, or taste some fresh coconut water from one of the many stalls alongside the avenue.

What to do in Maputo - Maputo beach

#11 Eating and drinking

This list of what to do in Maputo wouldn’t be complete without one of the best things to do in Maputo: eating and drinking.

From delicious typical dishes to ridiculously fresh seafood, the local gastronomy is definitely one of the top Maputo attractions. And don’t forget to try the local beers: Laurentina and 2M (my personal choice).

Some of my favorite places to eat and drink in Maputo are:

Dhow – a trendy restaurant, bar and art gallery with a stunning view over the Maputo bay.

Soul Gourmet – a healthy restaurant and gourmet store that also offers yoga classes on Saturday mornings.

Mundo’s – a laid-back restaurant/sports bar, famous for the best pizzas in Maputo.

Zambi – located on the oceanfront avenue, this upscale restaurant is considered one of the best places to eat in Maputo.

Where to stay in Maputo

The perfect spot in sommerchield.

We’ve stayed in an amazing Airbnb in the Sommerchield district , the best residential neighborhood in Maputo. This beautiful and very comfortable apartment is perfect for a group or family vacation (we were four adults but there’s space for up to six people). It’s also conveniently located close to restaurants, coffee shops, and several banks.

Disclaimer: we were non-paying guests since my friend owns the apartment, but I wouldn’t include it here if I didn’t think it’s a great option for your stay in Maputo!

Click here for more info and booking.

Polana Serena Hotel

If you’d rather stay in a hotel, Polana Serena is one of the finest in the city. In fact, this historic building is worth visiting even if you don’t stay here. Polana Serena offers 5-star accommodation and a spa.

The capital and biggest city of Mozambique is often overlooked in favor of the country’s stunning beaches and rich wildlife. But there’s a lot to do, see, and try in Maputo if you care to learn about the local culture and history.

No Mozambique travel itinerary is complete without a visit to its interesting and vibrant capital, as hopefully this list of what to see in Maputo has shown you.

It has been 16 years since I visited Maputo – I’d love to go back again and see how things have changed (or maybe stayed the same). And that Feima area looks so cool! Will definitely put it on the list.

11 Of The Best Things To Do In Maputo, Mozambique – The Ultimate Guide

This beautiful country in Africa needs to be your next travel destination! Here are 11 of the best things to do in Maputo, Mozambique.

things to do in maputo

Maputo was my first travel destination in Africa, and it was simply incredible. I never thought I would visit Mozambique but I was luckily sent there for work. During the weekends I spent my time exploring the city and fell in love with this place. Now, I want to show you why this should be your next travel destination!

The weather in Mozambique is quite good all year round, however, the dry season is between April to December whereas the best time to visit is typically between September and November.

A few general tips regarding a visit to Mozambique:

 • The currency is metical where 1 US dollar is ~ 64 metical.
 • The official language spoken here is Portuguese, however, every region in the country will also have its own unique dialect.
 • Walking around in Maputo is generally very safe, expats and diplomats who live here do not have security guards, which shows that you shouldn’t fret either. While there are some security problems in the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado, the southern areas are very safe.
 • Although it is safe, if you do not like being followed by beggars, try to limit how much you walk outside during the night.
 • Avoid driving a car here, the traffic is crazy, and there are more risks to it (more in the last tip).

This post is all about the best things to do in Maputo, Mozambique.

11 Of The Best Things To Do In Maputo

1. go to the mercado central .

The Mercado Central is the central market in Maputo. Here you can find lots of fresh produce and lots of juicy fruits that are special to this region, such as pineapples and coconuts. In addition to produce, there are also lots of stalls selling souvenirs and masks made out of wood, as well as general household items. This place tends to be quite chaotic so keep that in mind. While the city is generally very safe, you should still watch out for pickpockets so keep your belongings close to you.

Afterward, walk around the area surrounding the market. This is one of the most central regions in the city so you are bound to find some unique sights.

things to do in maputo

2. Visit the Central Railway Station

The Central Railway Station here is among some of the most beautiful in the world. The locals are very proud of it and for good reason. Make sure to visit the station and go inside where you will find an open-air museum showcasing the history of the station. While visiting the station is free, there may be locals who will offer you a tour and afterward ask for a tip. This is very common and we actually accepted such an offer. Not only do you get to interact with the locals and get a deeper appreciation for the place, but you also get to directly help them by paying for their service.

Little fun fact: a scene from the movie “Blood Diamond” with Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed at this railway station.

Afterward, make sure to check out the worker’s square across the street. There you can find an impressive statue in honor of the African and European fighters during World War I.

things to do in maputo

3. Visit the Fortaleza de Maputo

This fortress is one of the main historical monuments of the city. Mozambique was colonized by the Portuguese before it gained independence, and this fortress was built in 1780 by the Portuguese. Today the fortress is used as more of a museum, to showcase the military history in the region. It is not uncommon to witness wedding photos being taken here, with it being one of the most iconic spots in the city. Make sure to check it out and learn more about the local history while visiting Maputo.

4. Stay at the Serena Polana Hotel

The Serena Polana Hotel is a beautiful hotel located in the heart of Maputo, overlooking the water. The service here is spectacular and the decoration of each room is very authentic. Staying here is an experience in and of itself, while still feeling the touch of African culture in the interior design and choice of decor. I highly enjoyed my stay here and would recommend it over chain hotels such as Radisson Blu which can also be found here.

things to do in maputo

5. Visit Casa de Ferro

The house of iron was built in Belgium and is thought to be based on the design of Gustave Eiffel. It was brought ready to Maputo where the plan was to make it the governor’s home. Unfortunately, they did not consider that it would be virtually impossible to live in this house. This is because the heat would become unbearable. Today it is mostly used as a tourist attraction and is a fun piece of architecture to check out. It is definitely not every day you see a house made completely of iron. While there, make sure to visit the botanical garden that is located just across from here.

house of iron

6. Eat at Dhow

This beautiful restaurant is my favorite place to eat in Maputo. While it does not serve local food and has more of a greek menu, the food is absolutely delicious. In addition, being vegan in Mozambique does not make it easy to enjoy the local cuisine. Therefore, excuse the fact that it may not be local, but take my word for it and go eat here. The restaurant is locally owned, and they have a gallery inside where they sell art by locals. The interior design here is absolutely beautiful and worthy of a trip in itself. Dhow is very popular, so I recommend booking a spot in advance here .

After filling up on good food, walk down to the waterfront and stroll down Avenue da Marginal. Here you can enjoy the ocean views while walking down a long promenade lined with palm trees. It doesn’t get more serene than this!

dhow maputo

7. Things to do In Maputo: FEIMA Market

This place is actually called Parque dos Continuadores FEIMA and it is the best market in Maputo. Here you can buy incredible souvenirs that are all handmade. The stalls will be filled with animals and statues carved out of wood. In addition, there are some incredible paintings here. You are really spoilt for choice and it is a great place to buy some souvenirs while supporting the locals.

Keep in mind that they automatically raise the price for tourists so don’t be scared to haggle but stay fair. In addition, in every stall there will be a person begging for you to buy from them, so don’t be alarmed but also know that they are not dangerous. Please remember that this is how they make their income, so try to be fair with how much you are willing to pay. The market is open daily from around 8 AM to 17 PM.

feima market maputo

8. Mafalala District

The Mafalala neighborhood is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the area and could be compared to a favela in Rio. The people living here have had a huge impact on the history of Mozambique and therefore it makes for a very unique visit. Locals here have had a very important role in the struggle for independence. In addition, there is a museum here that incorporates history and art in a unique way. I really wanted to visit it, however, it was unfortunately closed during our visit. I encourage you to check the opening times in advance and center your trip here around the museum. Here is their website where you can find more information.

Something to keep in mind – although the district is not dangerous, it is not advised to walk around here by yourself. Try to find an organized tour of the district or a local guide. The people of Mafalala generally don’t speak much English, and this may be a problem if you are here alone and they try to communicate with you. Lastly, while here, try to support the locals in any way you can. This can be by buying from their local grocery market or a street vendor.

things to do in maputo

9. Check Out The Beautiful Street Art

There is a lot of impressive street art to be found scattered around the city of Maputo. However, there is also a specific area you can go to, where the street art covered the entire streets. This area can be found close to the central market, around two small streets. These streets are called Travessa da Palmeina and Rua da Gávea, and here is their location . Make sure to check this cool area out while exploring the city center!

10. Parque Nacional de Maputo

I have saved some of the best spots for last! Technically, the national park of Maputo is about 40 minutes outside of the city. However, it is extremely worth the trip and an easy way to get a small safari experience. The main animals you can find here are elephants, antelopes, zebras, and giraffes. While we only drove through the park, and therefore only saw the animals that wandered close to the road, it is possible to take a proper tour inside and look for the animals that are further out. If you have a day to spare here, I encourage you to consider this incredible experience.

national park of maputo

11. Ponta do Ouro

Welcome to the local vacation town. This coastal village has the best atmosphere you could wish for and is only two hours away from Maputo. It lies just by the border with South Africa and is an amazing spot for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Although the town is small, there are lots of activities here, mainly concerning the ocean that make it a must-visit place! The Indian Ocean is known to be home to some of the best diving in the world, and this is one of the best spots in Mozambique.

Although I highly encourage you to visit Ponta do Ouro, I do not recommend driving here alone. As I mentioned at the beginning, I would avoid driving outside of the city in a rental car. Unfortunately, like many other African countries, there is quite a lot of corruption here. The local police will often stop drivers in the middle of the highway, to demand money for improper conditions. This can things such as claiming the driver may be missing documents or anything to do with the car. This happened to us while visiting, but luckily we were with locals on an organized trip to Ponto do Ouro. We booked our trip through GetYourGuide and had no problems whatsoever.

ponta do ouro

Overall, my trip to Maputo surprised me in the best way possible. From never imagining that I would be visiting Mozambique, to falling in love with the people, culture, and scenery, I highly recommend visiting Maputo and Mozambique in general for an unforgettable experience.

Travel Guide To Maputo

Free travel guide to Maputo Mozambique

Once a tourist paradise, Mozambique fell off the map during a 17-year civil war (1975-1992). Now Maputo is once again proving to be an interesting place to visit. Foreign Offices remain divided over whether Mozambique is yet a completely safe destination.

Always consult the Foreign Office before travelling.

Where to eat out in Maputo

New restaurants, cafés and bistros are opening up all the time. Check out the Nautilus Pub, a popular hangout for wealthy ex-pats.

Terraço in the Hotel Polana (00 258 21 491 003/7) serves fine buffet and à la carte dinners. The hotel's café is also good for light lunches and pastries. The restaurant at the Hotel Cardoso (00 258 21 491 071/5) serves simple fish and meat dishes. Al'Andalus (00 258 21 423 051) at the Hotel Escola Andalucia has a more ambitious Continental menu. Restaurant 1908, Avenida Eduardo Mondlane (00 258 21 424 834), is famed for its starched colonial feel, while Piri Piri, Avenida 24 de Julho (00 258 21 492 379), is a Maputo institution, which serves no-nonsense piri-piri (hot spiced) prawns and chicken.

Of the bistros, Mundo's, on the corner of Avenida Julius Nyerere and Avenida Eduardo Mondlane (00 258 21 494 080), is one of the most popular. Finally Bistro, on Avenida Julius Nyerere (00 258 21 497 644), is a pocket of civility with an excellent wine list.

Things to do in Maputo

Take a trip to Inhaca Island, which can be reached by boat or plane from Maputo. Both options cost about $50 return (dollars are interchangeable with meticais as are South African rands). Stay at the laid-back Inhaca Island Hotel (00 258 21 34098), which has been completely renovated recently. The beach in front of the hotel is unexciting, but there are plenty better nearby and on the neighbouring Portuguese Island. The hotel can organise dives to the coral reefs and various other water sports. Lucas Restaurant in the village consists of a few tables, decorated with pretty checked tablecloths, set under trees in an enclosure. The prawns, cooked on an open fire, are surprisingly good at around $10. There is also a full bar service.

Visit Maputo

Visit Maputo, Mozambique’s most populous city, where museums, interesting architecture and excellent restaurants make for a worthwhile stop.

Maputo as it exists now was founded by the Portuguese colonists of the 18th century. It soon became one of Africa’s wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities. In the 20th century, however, a long civil war ravaged the city. The war started in the 1970s and didn’t end until the 1990s. Today, the scars are still visible, but the city has been revived. Appreciate the atmosphere and architecture as you set off to explore.

Wander among the once-glorious colonial buildings, imagining them during their heyday. Don’t miss a visit to Maputo’s 20th-century Praca dos Trabalhadores, the city’s main train station. Spot its architectural highlights, including wrought-iron lattice work and a dome designed by an associate of famed French engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel.

Art plays a big role in Maputo’s culture. Visit the National Art Gallery to see an eclectic collection of pieces by national artists. Also worth visiting is the Chissano Gallery and the Núcleo De Arte. For an insight into Mozambique’s flora and fauna, head to the Natural History Museum.

Delight in the medley of smells, sounds and sights of the Municipal Market. Peruse the stalls selling tropical fruits and heady spices. For something more laid back visit the Fortaleza, an imposing colonial fortress overlooking the ocean.

Food in Maputo is a true highlight. Savor heaped plates of sizzling prawns while enjoying the beach views along Avenida Marginal, or get comfortable in a street-side café to soak up the lively atmosphere.

Maputo International Airport is the main gateway to the country and most visitors will pass through here. Rent a car, hop in a taxi or join a guided tour to get to your hotel and begin exploring. You will find many different public transportation options to travel around the city and across the country.

Maputo travel guide

Maputo tourism | maputo guide, you're going to love maputo.

Life in sunny Maputo is largely lived outside, whether that means enjoying the afternoon at a sidewalk cafe, or simply taking a walk along a street lined with flame trees. You can savor the busy modern vibe of Avenida Marginal, or relax in the slower pace of the coastal Baixa area.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Maputo

1. beautiful buildings.

Stroll the pretty tree-lined streets of Maputo, with Mediterranean-influenced architectural gems like the train station.

2. Hot Nightlife

Maputo has a renowned live music scene, along with casual beer bars, sophisticated cocktail lounges, sweaty dance clubs, and more to satisfy every taste.

3. Hit the Beach

There are stellar beaches to enjoy in the immediate area, many of them accessible by boat, including Catembe, Ponta do Ouro, Praia da Macaneta, and Inhaca Island in Delagoa Bay.

4. Shop Local

From the Casa Elefante, with its selection of artisan craft work, to the Xipamanine Market every Saturday, you'll find virtually anything you need at markets, including foods, gorgeous batiks and other textile goods, and wood work.

5. Fantastic Food

Local cuisine means a delicious mix of Southern African, Portuguese, South Asian, and Middle Eastern influences, with both traditional and modern fusion cuisine to savor.

What to do in Maputo

1. stuff yourself with animal information.

Located almost on the tip of the peninsular jutting out into Maputo Bay, this interesting museum is housed in a supremely elegant colonial-era building, with gardens to match (and an engaging mural by the Mozambican artist Malangatana). Inside, you'll find carefully stuffed (and often fairly bloody) samples of South East African fauna, special exhibitions on elephants and snakes. One thing's for sure: You'll come out with a renewed appreciation for the country's biodiversity.

2. A Magical Musical Meeting Place

A key part of the capital's cultural life, the Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambicano celebrates links between Mozambique, France, and Francophone African nations. But, on a more everyday level, it's a vibrant music and drama venue, with shows taking place on a daily basis. Located in the historic core of the city, the center has an on-site gallery showing contemporary talents, runs masterclasses for traditional musical instruments, and also has one of the best cafes in town (but book ahead, as it's pretty popular).

3. A Simply Stunning Station

Maputo's central railway station is one of those termini that is much more than just a place to get in and out of the city. With its stunning late 19th century Art Nouveau design (created by an associate of the great Gustav Eiffel), the station is on a par with Grand Central or St Pancras, but relatively few get to see it. Marvel at the wrought iron decorations and the delicate dome, but go inside as well, where there's a lively exhibition space for local artists.

4. Discover Mozambique's Artistic Legends

Maputo's cultural pride and joy, the National Art Museum is like a pantheon of national artistic heroes, and you may be surprised by how many of them there are. From the celebrated sculptor Chissano to the muralist Malangatana, this museum is the perfect introduction to modern Mozambican culture, and houses over 2,000 works. It's also fairly easy to find, with a memorable address at the intersection of Karl Marx Avenue and Ho Chi Minh Avenue. If you love what you see, be sure to visit the Chissano Gallery. It's a little out of town, but for art fans, it's a must see.

5. Seafood Wonderland

Maputo's gastronomy revolves around the sea, which isn't much of a surprise seeing as the Indian Ocean is right next door. The Mercado do Peixe (Fish Market) can be found a mile or two up the coast from the city center in a large, custom-built hall - and it's a magical experience for seafood fans. First up, there's the energy of traders hawking their fresh shellfish and fish. But after that, the real highlight is having the chance to visit restaurants adjoining the main building, which serve the freshest grilled fish you'll ever taste.

Maputo

We only feature one hotel in Maputo - the very good Polana Serena

A vibrant, colourful, African city where the roads are lined with makeshift stalls, old colonial buildings and modern office blocks.

Maputo was founded in the late 18th century, and originally named after the Portuguese trader, Lourenço Marques, who first reached the area around 1544. Its growth was slow until 1895, when a railroad linked it to Pretoria and the gold-rush areas of South Africa - and by 1907 it was Mozambique's capital. After several decades of internal strife, peace took hold of Mozambique in the late 1990s - and now the capital, and the country, is peaceful and working hard to develop economically. Tourism remains tiny, but is increasingly important. To facilitate more esoteric Mozambique itineraries, you'll sometimes need to overnight in Maputo. If you like neat and ordered places, then Maputo is not for you. However, if eating fresh crab curry or piri piri chicken and watching a lively world go by appeals, then Maputo might just fascinate you.

When to go to Maputo

Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Maputo in Mozambique

Mozambique in January

January is one of the wettest, hottest and most humid months in Mozambique, with average daytime temperatures reaching the low 30s °C, dropping only to around 24°C at night. Although the rain falls mostly as tropical downpours in late afternoon/evening, with the rest of the time sunny, there are definitely better times to visit. Diving is generally good, but visibility can be limited. Dolphins are abundant, but humpback whales have moved out and this is the last month with a reasonable chance of spotting whale sharks and manta rays. On beaches, turtles lay their eggs and by the end of the month some are beginning to hatch. After the busy Christmas/New Year period lodges are almost empty, so it’s a good time to avoid the “crowds”.

 • One of the wettest & hottest months, with high humidity
 • Diving is fair but visibility can be poor
 • Great for dolphin viewing
 • Turtles laying eggs, which begin to hatch by end of month
 • The low season so lodges much quieter, but for a reason

A time to avoid if possible

Weather in January

Mozambique in February

The hot, wet weather continues, with rainfall at its peak in February in the south, and temperatures as high as those experienced in January; this is also the start of the cyclone season. Such storms are relatively rare but when they do occur they bring widespread devastation and disruption. Although the sea is wonderfully warm, beaches can be pretty windy and diving at this time of the year can be more challenging, with choppier waters and sometimes pretty poor visibility. As such, lodges tend to have good availability. The chances of seeing manta rays and whale sharks are minimal now, but turtles are still laying eggs followed by hatchlings making a dash for the ocean.

 • Rain & hot weather peaks, as does the humidity
 • Start of the cyclone season
 • Diving conditions can be more challenging
 • Great month for turtle watching

Weather in February

Mozambique in March

Rainfall is still high, peaking in the north – where it continues for longer than in the south – and the threat of tropical cyclones remains (2019 saw Idai wreak havoc). Temperatures fall ever so slightly but it’s still hot, with daily temperatures averaging 30°C and nights around 23°C. It’s still pretty humid but this begins to drop away towards the end of the month when the weather generally starts to improve. Diving, as in previous months, can be OK with warm seas, but conditions are unpredictable, and visibility is still only fair. Of the key marine species, only dolphins are now regularly seen and the last of the turtle hatchlings make for the sea. Availability is usually good, but when Easter falls in March, lodges can get booked up early.

 • Rainfall eases but still a chance of significant downpours
 • Cyclones remain a threat
 • Diving is reasonable, but visibility can be hit and miss
 • Turtle spotting excellent
 • Although low season, Easter can get booked up quickly

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in March

Mozambique in April

Although rain still lingers in the north, the rainy season in the south draws to an end. Temperatures are still high but as the rain peters out, humidity drops considerably and so it feels much more comfortable. There is still a small risk of tropical cyclones (as in 2019, when cyclone Kenneth hit), but these are usually extremely rare. Diving conditions improve with increased visibility and the sea is still warm, so April can be a lovely month for diving or a beach holiday. It is also excellent for fishing, with most of the game fish species being present. Lodges begin to see more visitors and can get especially busy over Easter.

 • Rainy season comes to an end in the south
 • Good weather for a beach holiday sets in
 • Diving, improves with increased visibility & warm seas
 • Excellent fishing conditions
 • Visitor numbers begin to increase, especially around Easter

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in April

Mozambique in May

As the rains cease in the north, May marks the start of the dry season across Mozambique (although the odd freak cyclone has been known to make landfall, this is exceptional). The days are warm and sunny, with low humidity and temperatures around 27°C, while evenings start to cool to around 16°C. It’s a really good month to visit coastal areas and as such the lodges get a bit busier and prices start to rise. Diving continues to improve with good visibility and calm waters, and the excellent game fishing conditions continue. Lastly, Mozambique’s biggest international music festival, Azgo, takes place in Maputo during May.

 • Start of the dry season: virtually no rainfall & humidity drops
 • Diving continues to improve with good visibility & calm seas
 • Excellent fishing conditions continue
 • Azgo international music festival in Maputo
 • Lodges get busier & prices increase

A very good time to visit

Weather in May

Mozambique in June

Good weather continues with pleasantly warm days, clear skies and a bit of a breeze – ideal for a relaxing beach holiday. Diving conditions are near perfect with good visibility, though note that sea temperatures are dropping by a couple of degrees. Southern right whales start appearing along the coastline. The excellent deep-sea fishing continues. On Ibo Island in the Quirimbas Archipelago, 24 June sees the Feast of St John the Baptist – celebrated as Kueto Siriwala (“to not forget your roots”) day. Expect dhow races as well as traditional music and dance. Lodges are getting busier and with Mozambique’s month-long summer holiday beginning in late June, it’s advisable to book well in advance. This is one of the best months and prices increase, reflecting the move into this peak season.

 • Weather now very good
 • Southern right whales start appearing along the coast
 • Diving conditions are superb
 • Kueto Siriwala festival on Ibo
 • Lodges getting busier & therefore prices higher

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in June

Mozambique in July

The dry season is now in full swing so clear blue skies abound. Warm, sunny days and cool evenings continue, with average temperatures between 25°C during the day and 16°C at night. July is definitely one of the best months to visit the Mozambique coast, though beaches can be a little windy. Humpback whales begin making their long annual migration from Antarctica to the warmer waters off East Africa to calve; if you’re lucky you may get to see them, especially at the end of the month. Diving and snorkelling conditions are reaching optimum levels with generally excellent visibility, though the water is now chilly by Mozambique standards. Fishing is still very good for most game species. Lodges are filling up due to northern hemisphere school holidays.

 • Warm sunny days & cool evenings
 • Diving conditions now almost perfect
 • Humpback whales begin arriving
 • Fishing still very good
 • School holiday time, so lodges are filling up

Weather in July

Mozambique in August

As in July, the days are lovely and warm – great for lying on a beach, though there’s a slight chill to the evenings and the sea is at its coolest at around 16°C. This is one of the best times to visit Mozambique, and is a great month for diving as visibility now reaches its peak, but it can be a bit windy. Humpback whale numbers are increasing, and manta rays and whale sharks start to appear, though are not a common sighting. Fishing drops off a bit but some species such as sailfish and queen mackerel are still taking bait. August is very popular – probably the busiest month – so lodges can be quite full and family-friendly resorts will have more children around.

 • Days still nice & warm with cooler, but pleasant evenings
 • Optimal diving conditions.
 • Whales numbers increase; the odd manta ray & whale shark may be seen
 • Fishing starts to tail off a little
 • Lodges at high occupancy levels, so can be busy

Weather in August

Mozambique in September

In September, temperatures begin to climb and warm, sunny days continue, although evenings are still cooler (averaging around 28°C in the day and 19°C at night); this is historically the driest month in Mozambique. Whale watching is getting even better as numbers increase and, as in August, diving and snorkelling conditions are excellent with great visibility. Sightings of whale sharks and manta rays begin to increase, and while dolphins are seen throughout the year, September is the start of the best dolphin-viewing period. The fishing is good with marlin, sailfish and kingfish all possibilities. Although the school holidays have ended it is still high season and still a popular month – it’s our favourite month here.

 • Arguably our favourite month
 • Temperatures start rising – the weather is beautiful
 • Superb diving & snorkelling conditions continue
 • Sightings of whale sharks & mantas rays pick up
 • Great for dolphin viewing & whales still present in good numbers

Weather in September

Mozambique in October

October is the hottest of the dry months with daytime temperatures peaking at around 30°C and evenings feeling balmy at around 20°C. With the heat building, the rains can begin right at the end of the month. The fishing is very good, especially for the bigger game fish like marlin. October is also considered the best month for whale watching, and one of the best for dolphins, which are present in good numbers. The chances of seeing whale sharks and manta rays also increase as the seas warm up; this, and the next two months, are best for sightings. Like August and September, October is also excellent for diving and snorkelling, with superb visibility, thus it’s another popular month, and carries peak season prices.

 • Hottest of the dry months
 • Excellent whale & dolphin watching
 • Chances of seeing whale sharks & mantas increase
 • Diving conditions remain excellent
 • Fishing for certain game fish species is very good

Weather in October

Mozambique in November

As the dry season ends and the wet season starts, the weather becomes a lot more unpredictable. Days are very hot with humidity increasing, though rainfall is still fairly low. November heralds the return of turtles coming ashore to nest and lay their eggs. With visibility still pretty clear, diving and snorkelling conditions remain good. There is still a decent chance of seeing humpback whales before they begin heading off towards the end of the month, whilst sightings of whale sharks and manta rays remain good, and dolphin sightings excellent. Fishing for certain species, especially kingfish and marlin, remains excellent. It’s no longer high season so prices of some lodges come down.

 • Days hot but weather becomes a somewhat unpredictable
 • Diving still good
 • Start of the turtle-nesting season; humpback whales begin to leave
 • Good month for dolphins, whale sharks & mantas
 • Lodge prices starting to come down

Weather in November

Mozambique in December

Days are still hot, with rising humidity making it feel a lot stickier. Average daytime temperatures hit 31°C+, with evenings around 23°C. December is one of the rainiest months, but expect short sharp thunderstorms as opposed to lengthy rainfall. The turtle-nesting season is now in full swing, so seeing females laying their eggs becomes a possibility. As humpback whales head back south, sightings become scarce, but dolphins, whale sharks and manta rays are still present in good numbers. Fishing for marlin, bonito and kingfish is still excellent. Sea visibility is generally good, but it can become a little hit and miss as the sun and warm seas encourage plankton blooms. Christmas and New Year are very popular periods despite invariably carrying price supplements.

 • Days are hot & a lot more humid
 • Turtles laying their eggs on beaches
 • Whale season is now largely over
 • Dolphins, whale sharks & mantas are still present
 • Christmas & New Year get booked up early, & cost more

Old fort in Maputo

Visit Maputo, Mozambique

 • Accommodation

Maputo is a bustling port city. Situated in the far south of Mozambique on the Gulf of Maputo it has wide avenues and a lively atmosphere.

Jacaranda, flame and palm trees line the wide streets, vendors sell everything from paw paws to pots and pans and there are lots of street cafés serving spicy snacks under rainbow coloured umbrellas.

Polana Hotel

Many visitors to Mozambique don’t visit Maputo unless they have a specific reason to do so such as friends or family in the area. Others like to stop for an overnight to see the city. It is probably not somewhere to spend more than a day or two however there is one beautiful hotel called the Polana, and some interesting day trips can be arranged from here. The atmosphere is hassle-free and it makes a pleasant stopover.

Do Not Travel To:

 • Certain districts in Cabo Delgado Province due to terrorism .

 • Pemba, the provincial capital of Cabo Delgado, due to threat of terrorism.

Country Summary: Violent crime, such as mugging, is common.

Terrorist groups in northern Mozambique continue to be active. Public areas may be attacked with little or no warning.

Mozambique’s health infrastructure is limited: there are only three doctors per 100,000 people, frontline health providers are often poorly trained, and medicine shortages are common. More than 1.2 million people in Mozambique have HIV/AIDS, representing a sizable population with compromised immune systems. In the event of a public health emergency, access to an ICU and ventilator support is highly unlikely.

Pemba, Capital of Cabo Delgado Province – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Terrorist attacks in multiple districts in Cabo Delgado Province present the possibility that the provincial capital of Pemba is vulnerable to attack due to the proximity of violent extremist forces and their increasing sophistication.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

*** Due to technical issues on the Mozambican e-visa website, U.S. citizen travelers wishing to obtain a visitor visa are advised to follow the guidance below related to tourism and business travelers until further notice. Please note an invitation letter is still required.***

 • U.S. citizens wishing to enter Mozambique for the purposes of tourism or business are not required to obtain a visa at this time. Entry requirements are determined by the traveler’s length of stay which is decided by immigration officials at the time of visa issuance. Trips spanning more than 30 days likely will require the receipt of an approval to remain extension from the provincial Direcção Nacional De Migração closest to the traveler. Administrative fees may apply. Tourist and business travelers are required to show proof of a round-trip flight and hotel reservation. These travelers may stay no more than 90 days (consecutive or interrupted) in a year . Travelers are eligible for tourist visas only if they do not intend to reside with a citizen or resident of Mozambique during their stay in the country. Due to the absence of a physical visa in travelers’ passports, the Direcção Nacional De Migração encourages travelers under this category to retain their receipt as proof of payment while in Mozambique. Tourist and business travelers from countries not eligible for visa exemption must apply for a visa using the electronic visa (e-visa) platform.
 • Travelers intending to reside with a citizen or resident of Mozambique during their stay in the country must obtain a visitor visa. Pre-approval for visitor visas can be obtained via the e-visa platform. Travelers must submit a notarized letter of support from their host as well as proof of the host’s status in Mozambique (i.e., valid visa, foreign residency document known as a DIRE, or passport) with the application. Visitor visa pre-approvals are located under the “Border Visa” section of the e-visa platform.
 • Visa pre-authorizations are accessed via the e-visa platform ( https://evisa.gov.mz/ ). In addition to tourist, business, and visitor visa pre-approvals, the site also provides pre-approvals for those engaging in crew member travel, humanitarian assistance efforts, sports and cultural activity participation, and investment.
 • Pre-approvals are not guaranteed visas, travelers must be sure to travel with all requirements related to their visa category for official review and acceptance at the time of arrival to Mozambique.
 • In the case of diplomatic, courtesy, official, transit, student, work, temporary residency, and residential visas, the Mozambican government requires travelers to obtain visas from their nearest embassy or consulate before arriving at Mozambican borders. Those wishing to obtain a visa instead of a pre-authorization prior to arrival in Mozambique can apply for visas at their nearest embassy or consulate.
 • Travelers 18 years and below traveling with one parent or unaccompanied must obtain a parental consent for the absent parent(s). The document must be notarized and in written in Portuguese. For additional assistance with this requirement, please contact: [email protected]
 • All travelers to Mozambique must be in possession of a passport at least six months validity after arrival  that contains least two clean (unstamped) visa pages  each time entry is sought. This does not include endorsement pages.
 • Please pay attention to the authorized period of stay on your visa (" Autorizado a permaneçer pelo período de  [number of days]"). This is the maximum number of days you may remain in the country before you  must  depart Mozambique. This is distinct from the validity of the visa which indicates when you may enter Mozambique.
 • Travelers not in possession of a valid visa will be fined for each day they illegally reside in Mozambique. Trips spanning more than 30 days likely will require the receipt of an approval to remain extension from the provincial Direcção Nacional De Migração closest to the traveler. Administrative fees may apply.
 • All travelers except those traveling on diplomatic, courtesy, and official visas have associated fees. Visa-related fees are assessed and paid only at the following locations: embassies or consulates, local immigration offices once in Mozambique, and ports of entry (i.e., air, land, and sea borders). Fees are payable by credit card and local currency. Currency exchange options may be available at larger ports of entry for those not in possession of a credit card or local currency. Fee payment is not requested online .
 • Travelers have 60 days from the date of visa issuance to use their visa. Unused visas will expire after the 60 th day.
 • Please also visit the Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique’s website to review entry and exit requirements. Visa queries can be directed to the Mozambican Embassy of Mozambique located at 1525 New Hampshire Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036 or by phone at (202) 293-7146 between the hours of 3-5 p.m. or online at Portal eVisa de Moçambique .
 • Travel to Mozambique often requires transit through South Africa. If traveling with minors, please visit the South African Department of Home Affairs website  for the most up-to-date requirements as the requirements can change without notice.

Vaccinations:

 • A valid certification of vaccination for Yellow Fever is required if you are coming from a country where Yellow Fever is present.
 • Border authorities can require all travelers to present a yellow vaccination books.  See the  CDC website  for further information on suggested vaccinations for travel to Mozambique.
 • If you cannot present a certificate at the port of entry, you will be vaccinated at your own expense.

Safety and Security

Please read the full Travel Advisory for Mozambique.

Road travel outside the city after dark is dangerous. U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling outside the major cities after dark by car, and are encouraged not to travel outside the city alone. You should be vigilant when you travel in Mozambique and if you travel to/from South Africa, as both countries have high crime rates.

Crime: Street crimes, including mugging, purse-snatching, and pick-pocketing are common in Maputo and in secondary cities. Carjackings are rare, but still occur.

 • Pedestrians have been mugged at all hours of the day. Avoid isolated areas and walking at night, even in well-known tourist areas.
 • Avoid walking along the Marginal south of the Southern Sun Hotel and Avenida Friedrich Engels and Rua Caracol.
 • Avoid walking along roads bordered by wooded areas, as criminals may hide there.

Johannesburg International Airport:

 • Secure your bags. Use an airport plastic wrapping service.
 • Avoid placing currency and high value items in checked luggage when transiting.

Landmines: Mozambique was declared free of all known landmines in 2015; however, there could remain unknown mines in very rural areas. Seek local information before going off-road outside major cities.

Information about specific safety and security issues can be found on the U.S. Embassy Maputo’s website . Victims of Crime:

Report crimes to the local police and contact the U.S. Embassy at +258 21-49-0723. Local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes. See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

 • help find appropriate medical care
 • assist in reporting a crime to the police
 • contact relatives or friends with your written consent
 • help explain the local criminal justice process
 • provide a list of local attorneys
 • provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
 • provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
 • help find accommodation and arrange flights home
 • replace a lost/stolen passport

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance.

Fraud: The U.S. Embassy in Maputo has received reports of scams which originate online, and involve promises of large inheritances that require international travel. Victims of this type of scam are asked to deliver suitcases from one location to another, and become unwitting narcotics traffickers. Be skeptical about financial promises made by an online contact, and never carry anything that you did not pack yourself.

See the Department of State page for more information on scams.

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. There is some tourism infrastructure, often operated by expatriates, but the host government has limited capacity to regulate. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified, either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the relevant field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside major cities to provide urgent medical treatment, especially outside normal working hours. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to host country laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be deported, arrested or imprisoned. It’s very important to know what’s legal and what’s not wherever you go.

 • Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs in are severe. Convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.
 • Some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.
 • Carry your passport with you at all times. You can be taken in for questioning if you cannot present your passport.
 • Photography of some government buildings may be illegal. Ask before taking pictures.
 • Driving under the influence can land you immediately in jail.
 • Your U.S. passport will not help avoid arrest or prosecution.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information. Faith-Based Travelers: See the Department of State’s International Religious Freedom Report . LGBTI Travelers: Mozambique is a very tolerant society. Consensual same-sex relations are not criminalized and there is increasing space in public conversation regarding LGBTI issues. There remains, however, some societal stigmatization and room for progress in terms of full equal treatment, such as in the registration of LGBTI groups. See our LGBTI Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report for further details. Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: Although the government legislatively mandates access to public buildings, transportation, and government services for persons with disabilities, few buildings are accessible.

 • Restaurants, hotels, and residential buildings have stairs at the entrance without wheelchair ramps, except perhaps at a few major hotels and retail areas.
 • Pedestrian paths and transportation are extremely difficult for persons with disabilities.
 • Sidewalks are not commonplace and, if they exist, are poorly maintained and dangerous to walk on at night.
 • Pedestrian crossings are infrequent and drivers seldom obey traffic signals.
 • Buses and taxis do not have special accommodations for disabled persons.

Students: See our Students Abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:

 • Rape: The law prohibits rape, including spousal rape, but it is not effectively enforced and is largely unknown in rural areas where the majority of rapes take place. Penalties range from two to eight years’ imprisonment if the victim is 12 years of age or older and 20 to 24 years’ imprisonment if the victim is under 12, according to the new penal code.
 • Domestic Violence: The law prohibits violence against women. Domestic violence against women, particularly spousal rape and beatings, remain widespread. Abuse of a spouse or unmarried partner is punishable with one to two years in prison, or a greater penalty if in conjunction with another crime.
 • See our travel tips for Women Travelers .

Consult the CDC website for the Mozambique prior to travel. Medical facilities are rudimentary, and most medical providers do not speak fluent English. Medications are not always available. Public and private medical facilities exist in the city of Maputo and most provincial capitals.

 • All health care providers require payment at the time of or before providing service. Most do not accept credit cards.
 • You are responsible for all medical costs. U.S. Medicare does not cover you overseas.
 • Prescriptions Medications: Check with Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure the medication is legal to bring into the country. Always, carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Medical Insurance : Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage. We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety : The EN4 toll road between Maputo and South Africa is well-maintained. The road network connecting provincial capitals is in fair condition, but can be riddled with potholes and other obstacles. Vehicles on certain sections of the EN1 roadway in Sofala and Manica provinces and the EN6 between Beira and Chimoio have been shot at and the Government of Mozambique has instituted convoys on some stretches of the road. U.S. Embassy officials are restricted from traveling in Sofala or Manica on the EN1 between the Save River (in the south) and the city of Caia (in the north) and on the EN6 between Beira and Chimoio. Restrictions are also in place on the EN7 from Nova Vanduzi to Luenha.

 • U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling outside cities after dark because of the increased risk of banditry, poor road conditions in some areas, poor maintenance of many vehicles in the country (e.g., no headlights or rear lights), as well as the threat imposed by livestock grazing on roadsides and intoxicated drivers.
 • Travel outside Maputo often requires a four-wheel drive vehicle, which creates an additional security risk since these vehicles are high-theft items. Public transportation is limited and often has poor safety standards.

Accidents Serious traffic accidents are one of the greatest threats to U.S. citizens in Mozambique. Accidents involving drivers and pedestrians are common and sometimes fatal. The potential for accidents increases at night due to unseen holes and obstructions, poor lighting conditions, pedestrians on the highways, and other vehicles driving without headlights. If a serious accident occurs or if a driver hits a pedestrian, crowds quickly gather.

 • Mozambican law requires parties to an accident to render assistance ; however, you should exercise your best judgment. Render assistance if necessary and practical, but only if you feel you can do so without placing yourself at risk.
 • Report the accident to the nearest police station and contact the U.S. Embassy immediately.

Traffic Laws : Drivers should obey police signals to stop at checkpoints, which are common throughout Mozambique. Foreigners visiting Mozambique for more than 90 days are required to have an International Driver’s License or to obtain a Mozambican driver’s license. Public Transportation : The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens not to use “ chapas ” (local minibuses) as a method of transportation due to frequent, often fatal accidents involving these vehicles. See our Road Safety page for more information. Visit the website of Mozambique’s national tourist office . Aviation Safety Oversight : As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Mozambique, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Mozambique’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Intersecting paths: Enhancing prosecution strategies in the fight against drug trafficking in Mozambique

© UNODC

Maputo (Mozambique), 17 April 2024 – Drug trafficking in Mozambique has a huge impact on the country's peace, stability, and development, as it has been flourishing due to institutional vulnerabilities, particularly in regions like Cabo Delgado – a rich region in natural resources.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Mozambique organized a meeting of focal points of relevant institutions in Maputo to strengthen national responses to drug trafficking, promoting inter-institutional cooperation to effectively tackle drug trafficking by identifying and discussing key threats and challenges in drug trafficking. Ultimately, the goal is to mitigate the impact of drug trafficking on Mozambique's security, stability, and development.

“ As the country is seen as a drug corridor and destination, it is important to hold and replicate these types of meetings. The actors on the front line need up-to-date knowledge and/or methods for tackling the crime of drug trafficking, ” highlighted by the participants of the meeting.

The meeting discussed good practices and existing challenges for effective inter-institutional coordination and cooperation were raised, namely between investigators, prosecutors and other law enforcement agencies, Financial Intelligence Units and customs.

Following this activity, UNODC carried out a training activity to increase the capacity and effectiveness of the country's criminal justice institutions in combating drug trafficking, such as the Office of the Prosecutor General and the National Criminal Investigation Service.

During the training activity, participants engaged in discussions covering various topics related to combating drug trafficking, such as the legal frameworks, financial investigations, contextualization of local drug trafficking, investigation techniques, digital evidence, procedural management, ethical and human rights considerations, inter-institutional cooperation, complemented by a practical component on such key issues.

The relevance of this type of activity in Mozambique was highlighted by the participants themselves, which see this as an alternate way for a “ better elaboration of investigation plans, which are useful for the current context of organized crime, especially drug trafficking.”

The current situation of drug trafficking in Mozambique reveals a complex and evolving landscape. Mozambique has for years served as a transit point on the “Southern Route” for heroin trafficking. Over the past few years, there has been a significant increase in heroin seizures, with more than 750kg seized in 2021 alone – a 428% increase –, rising again by 62% between 2022 and 2023. The decline in opium cultivation in Afghanistan, a major heroin producer, may impact global heroin markets and potentially influence trafficking patterns in Mozambique.

Meanwhile, trafficking of methamphetamines has expanded to Southeast and West Africa, including Mozambique. The country saw a staggering increase in seizures, with a 6218% increase between 2020 and 2021. Major recent seizures, such as 330 kg of methamphetamine and around 100 kg of amphetamines seized in the centre province of Inhambane in early 2024, further signal a continued and increasing influx of these synthetic drugs. Mozambique has also seen an uptick in seizures of drug precursors, with authorities also uncovering drug production facilities.

There has been a global increase in the supply and demand for cocaine, leading to new markets beyond traditional boundaries. Between 2020 and 2021, Mozambique experienced a 150% increase in cocaine seizures, rising once more between 2022 and 2023 by 115%. UNODC’s Global Report on Cocaine shows that the country's links with Portuguese-speaking countries facilitate the flow of cocaine from Latin America. Cocaine arriving in Mozambique is primarily destined for South Africa and European countries, with traffickers using sophisticated tactics such as concealing drugs in containers.

In addition to this, authorities have also seized smaller quantities of ecstasy, khat, hashish, morphine, cannabis, and amphetamines/mandrax. Total amounts of amphetamines have particularly increased since 2019.
