Introduction

Welcome to the world of international travel! Whether you are a frequent globetrotter or planning your first trip abroad, staying connected is essential. One of the key concerns for travelers is how to stay connected with friends, family, and work while abroad. This is where international roaming comes into play.

International roaming allows you to use your mobile phone or device with your existing phone number and service provider while you are traveling outside your home country. It ensures that you can make and receive calls, send text messages, and use mobile data just like you would at home. For Vodafone customers, activating international roaming is a straightforward process that can be done online, via phone, or by visiting a Vodafone store.

In this article, we will explore everything you need to know about activating international roaming on Vodafone. We will discuss coverage, the cost of roaming, and provide step-by-step instructions on different activation methods. So, let’s dive in and make sure you stay connected no matter where your travels take you!

Understanding International Roaming

Before we delve into the process of activating international roaming on Vodafone, let’s first understand what international roaming is all about. When you travel outside your home country, your mobile device needs to connect to a foreign network in order to make calls, send messages, and use mobile data. International roaming is the service that allows your device to connect to these foreign networks.

When you activate international roaming, your phone essentially becomes a “guest” on a foreign network. Your home service provider, in this case Vodafone, negotiates agreements with various network operators around the world to ensure that their customers can access services when traveling abroad.

It’s worth noting that international roaming is enabled by default for most Vodafone customers, but it’s always a good idea to check the specifics of your plan and any potential limitations or additional costs associated with roaming.

When your device is roaming, you can make and receive calls, send text messages, and use mobile data just as you would at home. However, it’s important to keep in mind that roaming services can be more expensive compared to using your phone within your home country. The cost of roaming varies depending on factors such as the country you are visiting and the specific plan you are on.

Now that we have a basic understanding of international roaming, let’s move on to the next steps: checking coverage and assessing the cost of roaming with Vodafone’s services.

Check Coverage

Before you activate international roaming on Vodafone, it’s important to check the coverage in the country or countries you plan to visit. This ensures that you will have a reliable network connection and can stay connected wherever you go.

Vodafone provides a coverage map on their website where you can easily check the availability of their network in different regions. Simply visit the Vodafone website and navigate to the coverage map section. Enter the name of the country or countries you will be traveling to, and the map will display the coverage details.

Keep in mind that network coverage can vary within a specific country, so it’s always a good idea to zoom in on the map to get a more detailed view. Additionally, it’s important to note that some remote or rural areas may have limited or no coverage, so plan accordingly if you’ll be visiting such locations.

If you’re unsure about the coverage or have any specific questions, you can reach out to Vodafone’s customer service for assistance. They will be able to provide further guidance and help you determine if international roaming is feasible and reliable in your desired destination.

By checking the coverage in advance, you can avoid any surprises or potential connectivity issues during your travels. So take a few moments to check the Vodafone coverage map and ensure that you’ll have a strong network connection wherever your adventures take you!

Cost of International Roaming

Understanding the cost of international roaming is essential when planning your travels. Roaming charges can vary depending on the country you are visiting, the specific plan you are on, and the services you use. It’s important to be aware of these costs to avoid any unexpected charges on your mobile bill.

Vodafone offers different roaming plans and options to suit the needs of their customers. They often provide international roaming packs or add-ons that include a certain amount of minutes, messages, and data for a fixed price. These packs can offer more cost-effective options compared to standard roaming rates.

It’s recommended to visit the Vodafone website or contact their customer service to explore the available roaming plans and pricing details for the country or countries you plan to visit. This will help you choose the most suitable option based on your anticipated usage and budget.

Keep in mind that data usage tends to be one of the costlier aspects of roaming. Streaming videos or downloading large files can quickly eat up your data allowance and lead to higher charges. To minimize data usage, consider connecting to Wi-Fi networks whenever possible and disable background data for apps that you don’t need while traveling.

It’s also worth noting that incoming calls and messages are generally free while roaming, but be aware that there may be charges for outgoing calls, texts, and data usage. Make sure to review the specific rates and charges for the country you are visiting to avoid any surprises.

If you have any concerns about potential roaming costs or want to get a better understanding of the charges, don’t hesitate to contact Vodafone’s customer service. They will be able to provide you with detailed information and help you choose the best plan to suit your needs.

By being aware of the costs associated with international roaming and choosing the appropriate roaming plan, you can enjoy your travels without worrying about unexpectedly high mobile bills.

Troubleshooting

While activating international roaming on Vodafone is generally a smooth process, it’s possible to encounter some issues along the way. Here are a few common troubleshooting tips to help you resolve any problems that may arise:

Check Network Compatibility

Ensure that your device is compatible with the network frequencies and technologies used in the country you are visiting. Different countries may use different network bands, and if your device is not compatible, you may experience connectivity issues. Verify this information with Vodafone or consult your device manufacturer’s documentation.

Restart Your Device

After activating international roaming, it’s recommended to restart your device. This helps the changes take effect and can resolve any temporary connection problems.

Check Roaming Settings

Double-check your device’s roaming settings to ensure they are properly enabled. On most smartphones, you can find these settings within the “Network” or “Cellular” menu. Make sure that “Data Roaming” is turned on and that your device is set to automatically select a network.

Confirm Sufficient Account Balance

Ensure that you have enough account balance or credit to cover any potential roaming charges. Check your account balance or recharge if necessary to avoid any interruption in service.

Verify Payment Information

If you’re using a payment method for roaming charges, such as a credit card or PayPal, double-check that your payment information is accurate and up-to-date to avoid any issues with billing or transaction processing.

Contact Customer Service

If you have followed the activation steps correctly and are still experiencing issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to Vodafone’s customer service. They have the expertise to troubleshoot specific problems, provide further guidance, and ensure that your international roaming is activated and functioning properly.

Remember, staying connected while traveling is important, so don’t hesitate to seek assistance if you encounter any difficulties. By troubleshooting and resolving any issues promptly, you can enjoy a seamless roaming experience with Vodafone.

The best prepaid sim card data plans for usa travel.

What you need to know about buying a prepaid data plan for visiting the USA.

phones and technology

vodafone travelling usa

Having fast and reliable high-speed data for your phone is essentially a requirement when you travel to the USA but visitors are often surprised that prepaid SIM data plans aren’t as widely available or as affordable as in their home country.

In this guide, I’ll cover everything you need to know about buying a SIM Card in the US and how to buy the best US prepaid mobile data plans at the best price.

Important Note About Prepaid SIM Card Data Plans in the US

Getting a prepaid data plan in America is a frustrating experience—especially for international visitors. Mobile service is generally much more expensive in the US than in the rest of the world so tourists are often surprised when they arrive expecting easy access to cheap data.

Prepaid data plans aren’t common in the US because most Americans have year-long phone service contracts. To make things more complicated, many mobile carriers also require that you use a US credit card if you’re buying a month-to-month plan.

That’s why many tourists have issues when it comes to buying a data plan when they arrive in the US because they have to go out of their way to find prepaid service in the US.

Even major airports like New York’s JFK have very few options and the ones you’ll find are costly and not convenient.

I’ll cover all this more in-depth later in this article but I wanted to get this out of the way up front.

In short, I highly recommend buying a data plan before arriving in the US if you don’t want to deal with the hassle. Check out SimOptions (physical SIM cards and eSIM plans) or Holafly (eSIM only) for a few different options—I recommend buying an eSIM data plan if your phone is compatible.

How To Buy A Prepaid Data Plan For The US

vodafone travelling usa

You have three main options when it comes to buying a data plan for the US:

Prepurchase an eSIM Data Plan (Easiest)

The easiest way to buy a data plan for the US is to buy an eSIM data plan because you can activate it instantly so you don’t have to pay for shipping. All you have to do is buy the service and then activate it once you’re in the US. As an added bonus, using an eSIM allows you to keep your original phone number active on your phone.

I’ve personally used both SimOptions and Holafly in the past to buy international data plans. You can also read my guide to the best prepaid USA eSIM data plans .

Not sure what an eSIM is? Here’s a quick video showing you how easy eSIMs are:

Not all phones are eSIM compatible (although most modern phones are compatible) so keep that in mind.

Prepurchase a SIM Data Plan (Easy)

If you want to sort out your data plan prior to your trip, I recommend buying your SIM card before you leave so you’ll have data as soon as you arrive (i.e. no tracking down a SIM card once you arrive in the US).

The main downside is that you’ll have to wait for the SIM card to arrive and pay for shipping so it might not be a great option if you need your SIM Card right away.

Wait Until You’re In The US To Buy A SIM Card (Most Difficult)

The third option is to wait until you arrive in the US to buy your data plan. As I mentioned earlier, prepaid data plans aren’t very popular in the US so you’ll have to go out of your way to find them.

I’ll cover this in more depth further down in this article.

The Best Prepaid SIM Card and eSIM Data Plan You Can Buy Before Arriving In The US

Here’s a list of both prepaid eSIM data plans and physical SIM card data plans that will work in the US.

I’ve tried to list both pros and cons of each plan so spend a little time reading up on each because some have a few quirks.

Holafly US Data Plans (Unlimited Data eSIM)

vodafone travelling usa

Holafly  is a new data-only eSIM startup that I’ve personally used on a recent trip and found worked surprisingly well (read my  Holafly eSIM Review  to learn more).

Unlike other companies, Holafly’s plans give you unlimited data (they will throttle your data if you use excessive data but this won’t be an issue for most users) and their plans run from 5 to 90 days. Holafly also connects to both the AT&T and T-Mobile networks—which are two of the largest mobile carriers in the US.

In short, if you don’t want to worry about monitoring your data usage while traveling then Holafly is your best option.

  • 5 Days: $19
  • 10 Days: $34
  • 15 Days: $47
  • 20 Days: $54
  • 30 Days: $64
  • 60 Days: $84
  • 90 Days: $99
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  None
  • Texts/SMS:  None
  • Tethering:  No

Three 30-Day Pass (Digital eSIM Plan)

vodafone travelling usa

Plan Specs:

  • PRICE:  $35
  • DATA:  20GB
  • INCLUDES TEXTS OR CALLS?: NO
  • CREDIT VALID FOR:  30 Days

If your phone is eSIM compatible, the Three 30-Day Pass is hard to beat for the price and data allowance. This data plan gives you 20GB of data for $35 and it’s valid for a month.

And since this is an eSIM, you get instant delivery via email and you don’t have to pay for shipping.

Smart Traveller eSIM (Digital eSIM Plan)

vodafone travelling usa

  • PRICE:  $18
  • DATA:  6GB
  • CREDIT VALID FOR:  10 Days

The Smart Traveller eSIM is a good budget option for shorter trips since it’s only valid for 10 days. If you’re visiting for longer than 10 days, it makes sense to go with the Three 30-Day Pass for $35.

Orange Holiday World (Physical SIM Card)

vodafone travelling usa

  • PRICE:  $50
  • DATA:  10GB
  • USED AS A MOBILE HOTSPOT?:  Yes
  • CREDIT VALID FOR:  14 Days

The Orange Holiday World is a very popular choice for travelers for a few different reasons.

First, it’s run by Orange—the largest mobile carrier in Europe and they’ve partnered with major US mobile carriers so the service tends to be better than no-name SIM data plans.

Second, the Orange Holiday World plan includes 10GB of 4G/LTE data in the US. This plan also works in Canada and Mexico if those happen to be part of your trip.

Third, there is no registration needed—simply install the SIM and you’re ready to go.

The main downside is that the data plan only lasts for 14 days so it’s not ideal for longer trips but you can top up the card one time for €29 to get another 14 days of service with an additional 10GB of data.

Three PAYG MBB 12GB (Physical SIM Card)

vodafone travelling usa

  • PRICE:  $60
  • DATA:  12GB
  • USED AS A MOBILE HOTSPOT?:  NO
  • CREDIT VALID FOR:  1 Year

The Three UK PYAG MBB is another popular SIM data plan option thanks to its 12GB of data for $60. It doesn’t allow data tethering and you can use it with a pocket WIFI. This card is valid for a year after activation so it’s a nice option for longer visits to the US.

Three PAYG MBB 24GB (Physical SIM Card)

vodafone travelling usa

  • PRICE:  $80
  • DATA:  24GB

The Three UK PAYG MBB 24GB data plan gives you 24GB of mobile data for $80 so this is a good option for heavy data users. If you have a pocket WIFI, this can also be a good option for groups traveling together so you can split data over multiple phones.

How To Buy A Prepaid Data Plan In The US

vodafone travelling usa

Most prepaid data plans offered by US carriers are billed on a month-to-month basis so if you don’t cancel the plan you’ll be charged when the new month starts. Because of this, many mobile companies require that you have a US credit card.

Verizon Prepaid Data Plans

vodafone travelling usa

Verizon of the largest mobile provider in the US and their prepaid plans start at $40/month for 5GB of data. Verizon is also the most expensive option. Visit the Verizon website to learn more.

Verizon also has a new budget service called Visible but you’ll need a US credit card and only certain phones work on their network (visit the Visible phone compatibility checker to see if your phone works).

T-Mobile Prepaid US Data Plans

vodafone travelling usa

T-Mobile offers a monthly prepaid data plan that starts at $40/month (not including taxes and fees—a $10 SIM starter kit may be required). The $40/month plan gets you 10GB of data but the $50/month plan has unlimited data. Click here to visit the T-Mobile website to learn more.

AT&T Wireless Prepaid Data Plans

vodafone travelling usa

AT&T Wireless has prepaid data plans that start at $30/month for 5BG of data. Visit the AT&T website to learn more.

Google Fi Prepaid Data Plans

vodafone travelling usa

Google Fi has a monthly plan and a pay-as-you-go plan. The monthly plan has unlimited data for $50/month and the pay-as-you-go is $20+$10 for every 10GB of data. Visit the Google Fi website to learn more.

Straight Talk Wireless Prepaid

Straight Talk Wireless is a budget carrier that’s mainly sold at Walmart stores. The main problem is that Walmarts are generally located outside large cities so you’ll need a car to reach the store. You can also have the card shipped to a US address.

Vodafone international roaming FAQ

Nick Baker, Broadband and TV expert

Vodafone's roaming policy depends on which plan you sign up for, as each has varying levels of roaming included, if any.

If your Vodafone Pay monthly plan started before 11 August 2021, then you'll likely still have EU roaming included in your monthly price without having to add any extras. However, if you joined Vodafone, upgraded, or changed your plan on or after 11 August 2021, there will likely be a daily charge for using your phone in Vodafone's European roaming zones.

However, if you have an Xtra 3 plan or one of the selected Unlimited Max Xtra 3 plans, you'll have either EU roaming or worldwide roaming included.

Vodafone 5G roaming

Vodafone offers 5G roaming in 193 locations across Europe, which it claims is more than any other UK network.

What's Vodafone's fair usage policy?

Handily, Vodafone doesn't impose any data caps on roaming. So, you'll be able to use your full monthly allowance while you're in any of the countries listed above for no extra cost.

However, roaming with Vodafone is only free for the first 30 consecutive days of use. Once you exceed that, your roaming privileges will be suspended and you'll have to pay extra to use your monthly allowances.

Can I use tethering while roaming with Vodafone?

Yes, you can tether your mobile phone to other devices while roaming. You can turn on your phone's personal hotspot and connect devices to your phone just like you would any Wi-Fi router.

Best SIM Cards for Using Your Smartphone in the USA

vodafone travelling usa

If you’re travelling to the United States, having the right SIM card can save you a lot of money. We review the best value SIM cards for using your phone in the USA.

USA Flag

Each year, almost 4 million Brits visit the USA. Whether you’re travelling to New York to do some shopping, touring California to enjoy the beautiful scenery, or visiting Florida to enjoy the theme parks with your family, you’ll probably want to use your mobile phone whilst you’re there .

Having a smartphone in America can make it a lot easier to stay in touch with friends and family who are back home in the UK. It can also be useful for staying in touch with each other on your travels and for getting around (e.g. finding nearby restaurants and attractions on Google Maps).

The good news is it’s now really easy to take a UK smartphone and to use it in the US. You can either roam on your UK SIM card or you can buy a local US SIM card upon your arrival in the States. In this article, we’ll review and compare the best SIM cards for using your smartphone in the US. We’ll also discuss network compatibility with your UK handset.

  • 1 Using Your Mobile Phone In The USA
  • 2.1 Inclusive Roaming Deals
  • 2.2 Best USA Roaming Deals
  • 2.3 Standard Roaming Rates
  • 3.1 AT&T
  • 3.2 T-Mobile
  • 4 eSIMs For The United States
  • 5 Handset & Network Compatibility
  • 6 Other Top Tips For Travelling To The US

Using Your Mobile Phone In The USA

vodafone travelling usa

  • You can roam on a UK-based SIM card. This is the easiest and most convenient way to use your mobile phone in the USA. You’ll have a UK-based phone number (+44) and you’ll pay your UK mobile network for your usage.
  • You can buy a US-based SIM card on arrival. If you’re a frequent traveller to the US or if you need a US-based phone number (+1), you can get a local SIM from one of the US networks. However, this is typically a more expensive option unless you regularly travel for an extended amount of time.
  • You can buy a data-only eSIM for the USA. You can get a data-only USA eSIM from Airalo. This will give you a low-cost allowance of mobile data. However, you’ll need to use your regular SIM card for calling and texting (for which your standard roaming rates will apply).

The following table shows a side-by-side comparison of the three options:

For most people, we’d normally recommend roaming on a UK-based SIM card. This is likely to give you the best overall value, especially when you account for the cost of calling and texting. For instance, Lebara Mobile offers USA roaming add-ons such £10 for 8 days usage (2GB data & 200 minutes), or £20 for 15 days usage (5GB data & 400 minutes). You can activate your SIM card with a UK plan from just £2.50 and there’s no contract and no credit check required.

If you have an eSIM-ready phone (including the iPhone 11, Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and newer devices), a data-only eSIM from Airalo is also worth considering. If you only need data when you’re abroad, it’s slightly cheaper than roaming on a UK-based SIM card. However, you’ll need to take into account the cost of calls and texts on your regular SIM card. This is because the eSIM will only cover your data usage.

Roaming On Your UK SIM

Inclusive roaming deals.

EE

The simplest way to use your mobile phone in the USA is through international roaming on your UK-based SIM card.

As a first step, you should check to see whether your existing provider allows you to roam at no extra cost in the USA:

  • EE: If you’re an EE Pay Monthly customer with the Roam Abroad Pass , you can use your plan allowances at no extra cost when you’re travelling in the USA (up to a maximum of 50GB per month). This is available as a Smart Benefit or as a chargeable add-on costing £25 per month.
  • O2: If you’re an O2 Pay Monthly customer with the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Bolt-On , you’ll be able to roam at no extra cost in the USA. This is available on selected O2 Pay Monthly plans and also when you join Virgin Media as a Volt customer . For everyone else, there’s a fee of £6 per day to use your phone in the USA.
  • Three: If you’re a Three Pay Monthly customer, it might be possible to roam at no extra cost . If you’re on a Plus or Premium plan (taken since the 30th January 2023), you’ll get a certain number of Daily Go Roam passes to use during your contract period. Inclusive roaming is also available on Pay Monthly plans taken before the 30th September 2021. On all other plans, there’s a £5 daily fee for roaming in the USA.
  • Vodafone: If you’re a Vodafone Pay Monthly customer with Global Roaming Plus , you’ll be able to use your mobile phone at no extra cost when you travel in the USA. Otherwise, it will cost you an extra £6 per day.

Best USA Roaming Deals

vodafone travelling usa

On Lebara, you’ll be able to buy one of the following roaming add-ons for use in the USA:

You’ll be able to use your inclusive minutes for calling home to the UK, and for calling within the US (e.g. calling hotels, restaurants, taxis, etc). You’re also able to call friends and family who are travelling abroad with you.

Lebara’s roaming add-ons are a one-off purchase so they won’t renew automatically after the 8-day or 15-day period (you can see the full terms and conditions on their website ). If you like, you can always buy another add-on as required (e.g. for a longer trip away or to renew your data allowance).

If you’re not currently a Lebara Mobile customer, you can order a SIM card online . You can choose any of their contract-free UK plans, using the KEN3 voucher code at checkout to get 3 months half price. You’ll then pay for your roaming add-on on top of this. For instance, you could pay £2.50 for Lebara's 5GB UK plan , plus £10 for the 8-day USA roaming add-on (giving you 200 minutes, 100 texts and 2GB data to use in the USA). In total, you’d pay £12.50 for both your UK and US plans.

There’s no contract and no credit check on Lebara Mobile. Although you’re able to continue using the SIM card when you get back to the UK, there’s no commitment and you can pause or cancel your plan at any time.

Get Lebara SIM Card (from £2.50 top-up) → (use KEN3 voucher code for 3 months half price)

If you’re looking for an alternative provider, VOXI offers a range of Global Roaming Extras for their customers. On VOXI, you’ll pay £15 for an 8-day Global Roaming Extra (with 100 minutes, 100 texts and 2GB data) and £25 for a 15-day Global Roaming Extra (with 200 minutes, 200 texts and 4GB data). You can get a VOXI Pay As You Go SIM card from £10 .

Standard Roaming Rates

If your current provider does not offer inclusive roaming in the USA, the following table shows the standard roaming rates you can expect to pay:

Comparison of roaming charges when using your UK-based SIM card in the US. The costs shown are for calling the UK and sending a text message to the UK. It’s always free to receive a text message wherever you are in the world.

Unless you have a suitable deal for roaming, the costs of international roaming in the USA can add up very quickly. This is because the average smartphone user can easily consume more than 100MB of data per day.

Buying A US SIM Card On Arrival

If you regularly travel to the United States for an extended amount of time, it might be worth getting a local SIM card from one of the US mobile networks. If you have an unlocked UK smartphone, you’ll have the option of using a SIM card from either AT&T or T-Mobile USA . Unfortunately, a Verizon SIM card will not work on most UK-purchased phones.

You can buy a US SIM card upon your arrival in the States from retailers like 7-Eleven, CVS, Target, Walgreens and Walmart. Alternatively, you can get a SIM card from an AT&T or T-Mobile retail store. Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to buy a US SIM card in advance as the US mobile networks will not ship their SIM cards to the UK.

AT&T Logo

On AT&T, it’s possible to get a prepaid plan from $30 per month (approximately £23.90) plus tax. This will get you 5GB of data and unlimited US minutes. There are also unlimited international texts included (to the US, the UK and more than 200 other countries).

If you’re looking for more data, there’s 15GB data for $40 per month (approx £31.90) plus tax, and unlimited data from $50 per month (approx £39.80) plus tax.

The following table shows the Pay As You Go plans available on AT&T:

† On AT&T’s $50/month Unlimited plan, you’ll get speeds of up to 3Mbps on the first 30GB data per month. After that, speeds are slowed down to a maximum of 1.5Mbps. The use of tethering and personal hotspot is not included on this plan. The $65/month plan comes with faster speeds and 5GB of personal hotspot data.

The exact price you pay will depend on local tax rates ( see a list of wireless tax rates for each US state ). In addition, there’s normally a $15 activation fee for a new AT&T SIM card (however, this can vary depending on where you get your SIM).

A discount may be available on the prices listed above if you pay for 12 months usage in advance or if you set up AutoPay on your account. However, this isn’t suitable for short-term visitors to the USA as your plan will be renewed automatically every month, even after you’ve left the USA.

On AT&T, phone calls back home to the UK will cost you $3/minute (plus tax). This is unless you pay an extra $10/month (plus tax) for the international calling add-on. This gives you 250 international minutes for calling back the UK. There’s also a $15/month International Plus add-on which gives you unlimited international minutes for calling home to the UK.

You can get an AT&T prepaid SIM card from your nearest AT&T store . Before you do this, it’s worth checking the coverage available at places you’ll regularly visit in the USA (see AT&T’s online coverage map ).

Finally, it’s worth being aware that your AT&T prepaid SIM card will be deactivated automatically if you don’t top it up again within 60 days of your previous bundle expiring. For this reason, it will only be possible to re-use the SIM card on a subsequent trip if you plan to visit the US again within a 60-day period.

T-Mobile USA

On T-Mobile, you can get a prepaid plan from $40/month (plus tax). This gives you 10GB data, along with unlimited minutes and unlimited texts within the USA. You can upgrade this to an unlimited data plan from $50/month (plus tax).

The following table shows the prepaid plans from T-Mobile USA:

† On the $50/month Prepaid Unlimited plan, tethering and personal hotspot usage is limited to 3G speeds. †† On the $60/month Prepaid Unlimited Plus plan, you’ll get 10GB of high speed tethering and personal hotspot. After this, tethering and personal hotspot usage is restricted to 3G speeds.

You can get a T-Mobile “prepaid starter kit” for a fee of $10 (approx £8) plus tax at any T-Mobile retail store in the USA. The starter kit consists of a new prepaid SIM card, along with an instruction leaflet on how to get set up. You’ll need to pay for your one-month plan on top of this.

To activate and use a T-Mobile SIM card, your device will need to be capable of supporting VoLTE technology on the T-Mobile network (more commonly known as 4G Calling in the UK). To check this, you can enter your device details on the T-Mobile website .

Before getting a T-Mobile USA SIM card, it’s also worth checking the coverage available in places where you’re staying.

There’s a minimum charge of $3/month on all T-Mobile prepaid SIM cards. In addition, the SIM card is only valid for 90 days since the date of the last top-up. For this reason, it will only be possible to re-use your SIM card on a future trip if you keep it active by topping up at least once every 90 days.

eSIMs For The United States

vodafone travelling usa

The main benefit of getting an eSIM plan is the fact it’s available straight away as an over-the-air download. There’s no need to wait for a SIM card to arrive in the post or to get a SIM card from the shop when you arrive. It’s also a lower-cost option if you don’t need the ability to call or text when you’re in the USA.

Technically speaking, your Change Mobile eSIM is based outside the USA. This means you’re able to avoid local US taxes and fees, which would otherwise apply if you were getting a SIM card from AT&T or T-Mobile USA.

The main disadvantage of an eSIM plan is the fact you’re getting a data-only service. If you need to make or receive phone calls and text messages whilst you’re in the USA, you’ll need to use your regular SIM card for that instead. You’ll then incur additional international roaming fees (this can easily add up to £5 for a three-minute call). For that reason, we’d only recommend getting an eSIM if you don’t envision yourself needing to make or receive phone calls in the USA.

The following table shows the eSIM plans that are available from Airalo (Change Mobile):

As a special offer for May 2024, you can get a 10% discount on your Change Mobile eSIM. If you’re new to Airalo, you’ll be able to enter the KEN10 voucher code at checkout to get 10% off. Alternatively, if you’re an existing Airalo customer, there’s a 5% discount available with the KEN5 voucher code.

See all USA eSIM deals →

If you’re using an eSIM from Airalo, you’ll get access to the T-Mobile and Verizon US mobile networks. Your eSIM plan will not work outside the USA (e.g. in Canada , Mexico or the Caribbean ).

Handset & Network Compatibility

vodafone travelling usa

If you’re using a 4G-capable smartphone that lacks support for 4G Calling technology, it should still be possible to access the internet when you’re in the USA. You’ll also be able to use voice-over-IP apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime and Skype to make phone calls. However, you won’t be able to make or receive phone calls on your normal UK phone number without support for 4G Calling.

If you’re using a fairly old handset, or if your smartphone was purchased outside the UK, you should double-check to make sure your handset will work on the US networks. Your phone will need to support at least one of the following frequencies for it to work in the US:

You can check your handset manufacturer’s spec sheet to see a list of bands supported by your phone. You can also enter your IMEI on the T-Mobile website to see whether your handset is compatible with their network.

It isn’t normally possible to use a UK smartphone on Verizon Wireless . Although you can technically use it on Verizon, they make it difficult to activate their SIM cards if you’re using a smartphone from the UK.

Other Top Tips For Travelling To The US

Portable Battery Pack

When travelling to the US, it’s also worth bearing the following things in mind:

  • You’ll need an ESTA to fly to the US. If you’re travelling to the US by air or by sea (even if you’re only transiting through the US to another country), you’ll need to complete an online ESTA form (from the US Electronic System for Travel Authorisation). It costs US$21 per person (approximately £17) and lasts for two years. There’s more information about this on GOV.UK and on Money Saving Expert . You should always apply for your ESTA on the official website run by the US Department of Homeland Security.
  • Make sure your electronic devices have power before boarding. There are extra security measures for travellers to the US. All electronic devices being carried in your hand luggage will need to have sufficient amounts of power for you to be able to turn them on. This includes your smartphone, tablet, laptop and e-book reader. You could be asked to switch on the device and to demonstrate its function when passing through airport security. As there are only limited charging points available at the airport, it’s probably a good idea to invest in a portable charger (prices start from around £20).
  • Make sure you have the relevant adapters for charging your electronics. You’ll need a UK-to-US plug adapter for charging your electronic devices. Besides your mobile phone, consider whether you might need additional adapters for your laptop, hairdryer, shaver, etc.
  • Use TSA approved locks for securing your baggage. If you’re using a lock to secure your baggage, it needs to be TSA approved (see Amazon.co.uk for a list of TSA approved baggage locks). If you use a non-TSA approved lock, the security teams at the airport may take a bolt cutter to your lock.

If you’re also planning to visit Canada along with the USA, see our guide on the best SIM cards for Canada .

This is such an amazing article and so helpful, thank you! If i go for the data only airalo, i know you said I wont have my UK number, but how does that work with my watsapp as that is linked to my uk phone number? Thanks!

Hi Lorna, Thanks for your comment. WhatsApp will continue to work as normal on your eSIM from Airalo. Even though it’s initially set up using your UK phone number, it works over any data connection (including wi-fi, a eSIM, etc). Hope this helps, Ken

Hi Ken, thank you so much for this useful information! Going to USA this summer. I have a Pixel 6 phone and I’m currently pay monthly with Tesco mobile. If I use a 3 PAYG SIM in USA, will I still have access to all the apps already installed in my phone with my Tesco mobile number? Would I be better to get an eSIM so I can switch between numbers as required? I’m finding all this tech talk a tad confusing…. Thanks!

Hi Jo, Thanks for your comment. Yes, you’ll still have access to all of your apps, photos, etc after changing the SIM 🙂 However, you won’t have access to your Tesco Mobile number – you’ll need to use your 3 PAYG number for the duration of your trip abroad. Hope this helps! Ken

David Hughes said:

Hi Ken, thanks for this info, it’s extremely helpful. I’m travelling to the US for 8 days, so the VOXI option looks like a good option. Sorry to ask what I think will be a simple question, when I register the sim card with VOXI, can I use my current UK number? And when I return to the UK, will I be able to then re-insert and use my normal UK sim card? Thanks again, David

Hi David, Thanks for your comment. The best thing to do would be to set up call forwarding from your normal SIM card to your VOXI SIM card. Just make sure to leave your normal SIM card at home, or if you bring it, make sure that SIM card doesn’t connect to the US network or you’ll be charged the international rates for calling forwarding. If you like, it’s possible to transfer your phone number to VOXI but this will automatically close the account on your old network. For that reason, it isn’t recommended unless you plan to switch to VOXI long-term. Hope this helps, Ken

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

vodafone travelling usa

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

  • ◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations. ◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

What to do before you travel

Jetting off soon? You don’t need to tell us you’re going abroad, but here are some hints to help you stay connected, control spending, and make sure your trip goes smoothly.

Pay monthly roaming checklist

Check costs for the country you’re travelling to.

Use our charger checker to see how much it’ll cost to use your phone abroad.

Set up Spend Manager

Set spend limits on calls, texts and other services. If your limit is set to £0 you won’t be able to roam in destinations that aren’t included in your plan.

Save with our range of Extras

If your plan doesn't have inclusive roaming in our Europe Zone (Zone B), you can add an Extra to your plan and roam from £1 a day with our 8 or 15-day European Roaming pass.

Check your roaming bars

Turn off any active roaming bars in your My Vodafone account so that you can still use your data and other services while you’re away.

Check data roaming settings

If you want to use your data while you’re abroad, make sure you turn on data roaming on your phone.

Set a voicemail PIN

If you want to use your voicemail while you're abroad, for security reasons you'll need to set up a PIN before you go.

Pay as you go roaming checklist

Buy a roaming extra.

If you're roaming in our Europe Zone (Zone B), you'll need to buy one of our 8-day Europe Extras. Your Extra will start straight away so make sure you're ready to use it.

Keep costs down when roaming

Connect to wifi where possible.

Connect to WiFi and use public WiFi hotspots when you’re out and about – for example in hotels and cafes. When you can use WiFi, avoid accidentally using your data by  turning off data roaming  on your phone.

More ways to control your data usage abroad

Add bars and limits

As well as the data roaming bar, you can also set bars on calling and texting, receiving calls and texts, and even bars on calling non-UK destinations while abroad.

Set controls and limits

If you're on Pay Monthly, you can set a spend limit for services not included in your monthly allowance, such as picture messages or international calls.

More about Spend Manager

Keep track of your bill

Keep tabs on your usage or credit while you're abroad to control your spending. When you’re roaming it can take up to 72 hours for new charges to appear on your bill.

Check your latest bill

Safety tips from the US government for Americans traveling to Mexico

A travel advisory for the country has been in effect since late august 2023, by dana williams • published may 4, 2024 • updated on may 4, 2024 at 5:24 pm.

The U.S. Department of State has been cautioning Americans to reconsider travel to Baja California, the region of Mexico, where four bodies were recently found .

The warning is part of a travel advisory for the country that has been in effect since late August 2023. According to the department’s website, “violent crime – such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking and robbery – is widespread and common in Mexico.”

It also adds that because U.S. government employees are restricted or prohibited from going to certain areas in Mexico, it makes it difficult for them to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens who might need it.

However, they shared tips for Americans who travel to the region against their warning:

Get San Diego local news, weather forecasts, sports and lifestyle stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC San Diego newsletters.
  • Keep friends and family informed of your travel plans.
  • If separating from a group, share your GPS location with a friend.
  • If taking a taxi alone, take a photo of the taxi’s number and/or plate and send it to a friend.
  • Use toll roads when you can and do not drive alone or at night.
  • Be extra cautious when visiting local bars, nightclubs or casinos.
  • Do not show any signs of wealth (i.e. jewelry, etc.)
  • Be vigilant around banks and ATMs.

The department also suggests enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program .

A big surprise — he said Parks growth in the current fiscal third quarter will be flat for a few reasons including “some normalization of post-Covid demand as it relates to demand. While consumers continue to travel in record numbers and we are still seeing healthy demand, we are seeing some evidence of a global moderation from peak post-Covid travel.” Wall Street didn’t quite know what to do with that.

He expects Parks to rebound in the fiscal fourth quarter.

Asked during a Q&A to expand, he said: “In terms of attendance, what we’re basically communicating is, relative to the post-Covid highs, things are tending to normalize. The parks business did 10% growth in the quarter. And obviously, that’s an extremely high revenue number. We still see the bookings as we look ahead indicate healthy growth in the business. So we still certainly feel good about the opportunities for continued strong growth.” He said the Q3 number would be up in the high single-digits backing out one-time expenses.

“I certainly feel like the business is still doing very, very well. Obviously, we’ve got the best in the business in terms of product, and people still have a strong desire to basically go on vacation and come to see us.”

Johnston talked up the cruise business, “given the margin profile of the business, and the fact that it’s got the highest guest satisfaction scores in the company. This leads us to conclude this is a business with a lot of runway left in it, and that’ll deliver great returns to our shareholders.”
