Everything to Know about the Volcanoes in Bali

  • April 21, 2024

The volcanoes in Bali are one of the most underrated aspects of the island.

Tourists swarm to the beaches, rice terraces and cliff sides, but only a few adventurous explorers really bask in the magic of Bali’s towering peaks.

Sitting on the ‘ring of fire’, Bali is home to a number of volcanoes, including one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, Mount Batur.

For an adventure seeker who wants to join a volcano tour in Bali and hike the steep slopes, or for those who simply want to sit enjoying a coffee with a beautiful view of the mountain range, we have all the information you need.

Mount Batur

volcano in bali to visit

Mount Batur is the most well known of Bali’s volcanoes thanks to its easy hike to the summit and sunrise views.

It is also the most active volcano, with mini eruptions happening every few years.

With a scenic lake view, even those who don’t want to tackle the hike will visit to take in the magical scenery and enjoy a cup of coffee from a mountain view cafe.

Hiking Mount Batur

The Mount Batur sunrise trek is one of the biggest draws for tourists to the volcano.

Starting in the early morning, an expert guide will lead you up the rocky trail to the summit of the volcano where you will be greeted with outstanding sunrise views – and a snack!

Considered a ‘medium’ difficulty hike, you don’t have to be a professional to try it out, but need a relatively good level of fitness.

Be sure to pack something warm as it can get very chilly before the sunrises! It is one of the easiest hikes in Bali for those who want to dip their toes into the trekking options on the island.

Where to Stay Near Mount Batur

If you need a place to rest before your big hike, or want to relax in the shadow of the volcano with scenic views, there are many spots to stay around – and even on – Mount Batur.

Mount Agung and Bratan Volcano

volcano in bali to visit

The two tallest volcanoes in Bali are Mount Agung and Bratan Volcano.

Both active volcanoes, Mount Agung has been bubbling under the surface since its latest eruption in 2019 that famously brought the island to a halt.

Bratan Volcano, however, has not erupted in thousands of years – that’s not to say it won’t happen.

Mount Agung

Reaching up to the highest point of Bali, Mount Agung – also known as Gunung Agung meaning ‘Great Mountain’ – sits in the quiet rural area of Karangasem looming over vast jungles, and just a short drive from the beach.

Due to its gigantic height, Mount Agung has a strong influence on the island’s weather including the climate and rainfall.

After years of sitting dormant, in 1963 Mount Agung had a huge eruption that tore through the surrounding villages and farmlands.

Interestingly, the lava didn’t touch the mother temple ‘ Besakih’ which is situated on the southern side of the volcano, reinforcing to the local Balinese that it was a spiritual eruption, and they are being kept safe.

In 2019 bubbling smoke clouds and mini eruptions could be seen billowing out from the crater of the volcano, but it never properly erupted. Until now the island remains on alert!

Hiking Mount Agung

Hiking Mount Agung is definitely not for the weak hearted. Towering to over 3,000m above sea level, it is one of the hardest treks on the island.

Leading through jungles until rocky pathways, hiking Mount Agung is perfect for an adventurer looking for a challenge. With incredible views from the top, it makes the 6 hour hike worthwhile.

Where to Stay Near Mount Agung

There aren’t any places to stay on Mount Agunge, or even in the immediate surroundings. But, here are some of my favourite hideaways where you have undisturbed views of the towering Great Mountain.

Palmterrace

A private apartment with a pool and expansive jungle views with the towering Mount Agung in the far-off distance, Palmterrace is a comfortable and relaxing getaway in the heart of Karangasem.

  • Mahagiri Panoramic Resort & Restaurant

Bratan Volcano

volcano in bali to visit

Nearly 800m shorter than Mount Agung, Bratan Volcano contains 3 beautiful lakes. The name Bratan is often used to reference a number of volcano peaks in the area including Mount Catur.

Located at the heart of the island, in the foggy, cool area of Bedugul, Bratan hasn’t had an eruption in thousands of years – so long ago in fact, the last eruption isn’t even recorded.

One of Bali’s most famous Hindu temples, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the shadow of the volcano, and is the biggest draw to the area.

Exploring Bratan

There is a lot to see and do around Bratan including lakes, water temples and hot springs as well as dormant cones within the volcanic complex.

  • Lake Bratan – as mentioned, Lake Bratan is home to Pura Ulun Danu Beratan. Filled with small temples and steeped in culture, it is one of the must see sights when in the hilly region of Bedugul.
  • Mount Catur – the 4th tallest ‘volcano’ in Bali, Mount Catur is considered an easy hike. Starting at Lake Bratan the hike leads you through thick forest until you reach the top with vast views of Bedugul and the lake.
  • Bali Botanic Gardens – a grand 157 hectare botanic garden among the mountain range of Bedugul, Bali Botanic Gardens is a calm day out where you can see unique and rare tropical plants, flowers and sprawling lawns.
  • Lake Bayun – the biggest of the Bratan crater lakes, Lake Bayun is surrounded by cafes and restaurants where you can dine with unbeatable lake and mountain range views.
  • Lake Tamblingan – the lesser visited of the Bedugul lakes, Lake Tamblingan is a peaceful place away from tourists where you can enjoy amazing scenic views in a calmer, more serene setting.

Where to Stay Near Bratan Volcano

For a romantic escape with your loved one, the hotels and villas around Bratan Volcano are a beautiful place to look out over vast views and enjoy the outstanding nature of Bali. They are also the perfect place to rest before a big day of hiking!

Bratan View Restaurants and Cafes

There’s not much more enjoyable than sitting back for a delicious Indonesian meal with views of the huge Bratan mountain range right in front of you.

  • Strawberry Hill Hotel and Cafe

Other Bali Volcanoes

volcano in bali to visit

There are a few smaller, lesser known volcanoes in Bali that lay dormant, or are a part of the wider mountain range around its famous siblings.

Equally as impressive, a hiker’s dream and more peaceful than the others, these are worth checking out if you have some extra hours to kill or would like to visit the more ‘untouched’ areas of Bali.

Mount Abang

Originally part of Mount Batur, after a huge eruption Mount Abang split from the bigger volcano and now resides at the other side of the lake.

An easy, yet still challenging, hike for climbers, it is not as commonly visited by tourists.

Mount Batukaru

Mount Batukaru is located on the West side of Bali and is the second tallest mountain on the island.

Covered in thick forest and jungles, it is a challenging hike for those who don’t mind trekking vegetation.

From the top of the summit you will enjoy vast views of the whole island, including the tip of Mount Agung.

There is also Mount Adeng, Mount Lesong, Mount Lempuyang, Mount Pohon, Mount Prapat Agung and Mount Sengayang.

Each holding their own spiritual significance to the island, these less famous volcanoes and peaks are still worthy of a mention.

Final Thoughts

And there you have it, all the volcanoes in Bali that will challenge your fitness and humble your existence.

These huge and imposing mountains are dotted around the island only adding to the diverse and expansive scenery of Bali.

Whether you plan to hike to the top, or simply admire from afar, the volcanoes of Bali are definitely worth a visit.

What To Do In Kintamani – Bali’s Volcano Village

Kintamani Bali is one of the island’s most underrated areas, with fresh mountain air, lake view hotels and restaurants, and the humongous 13-kilometer-wide volcanic caldera that the village has sat in since ancient times.

The main attraction in Kintamani is the epic Mount Batur volcano, which is super popular for sunrise hikes, but there are a bunch of other neat things to see in the area like temples, hot springs, and the giant crater lake.

We spent a few days here recently and it was a fantastic getaway from the busy life in south Bali. This page will explain how to get to Kintamani, where to stay, and what are the best things you can see and do in the area!

Table of Contents show 1) Where To Stay In Kintamani 2) How To Get There 3) How To Get Around 4) Best Things To Do & See 5) Best Kintamani Bali Restaurants 6) Other Tips 7) Kintamani Entrance Fee 8) Best Time To Visit 9) How Long To Stay 10) Where To Stay 11) My Bali Travel Guide 12) Bali Private Driver & Motorbike Rental

How To Get There

Kintamani is located on the northeast side of Bali island.

It’s a 1 to 2 hour drive from touristy places like Ubud, Sanur, Canggu and Kuta in south Bali.

At the moment there’s no public transport to Kintamani, so the best way to get there is with a private driver or by scooter .

volcano in bali to visit

How To Get Around

The Kintamani sights are a bit spread out over the area, so you may need transport if you plan to go exploring.

The most popular way to get around is by scooter, and you can book these online or rent from a hotel or street shop.

Most hotels will also be happy to provide a day driver + car if you need one, and tour companies typically include transport in their packages.

Best Things To Do & See

• mount batur sunrise hike.

The Mount Batur trek is one of Bali’s most popular and epic hiking experiences.

Sunrise trekking is especially popular because you can catch amazing views from the top of the mountain, usually in a sea of orange clouds. There are Mount Batur tours that include hotel pickup and drop-off from the main tourist areas of Bali.

Batur is also a great hike to do while staying in Kintamani because you have easy access to the volcano. You can wake up later for the hike, so that means starting at 4 AM instead of 1-2 AM if you start from other areas of Bali like Ubud, Kuta, or Sanur.

We were able to walk directly to the volcano from our Kintamani hotel !

Inside the Kintamani caldera is a patchwork of picturesque crop fields growing onions, tomatoes, oranges and more.

The best time to take pictures of the fields is shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when the sun casts long dramatic shadows.

You can get the best views of this while climbing down Batur’s north slope, or by flying a drone!

• Volcano Dirt Biking

The south slope of the Batur volcano has a sandy black lava field that’s perfect for dirt biking, and there are a bunch of companies that offer this. ATVs and jeep tours are also popular.

It’s a cool experience if you’re looking to get an adrenaline rush while touring some scenic Indonesia vistas!

• Mount Agung Trekking

If you’re really up for a challenge, hire a guide and spend a full day trekking Mount Agung, the biggest volcano and highest point in Bali. This is an extremely hard hike, and Kintamani is a decent place to base yourself for it.

Best Kintamani Bali Restaurants

Kintamani has lots of good lake view restaurants and cafes, but here are a few top picks:

  • Kintamani Coffee : A coffee shop on the main road with great lake views and great food. Perfect breakfast stop!
  • Pulu Mujung Warung : Artistic/organic menu and some of the best food above Kintamani Bali. Views are top notch too.
  • Rejeng Bali : A close-up lake view restaurant sitting directly on the shores of Lake Batur, with fair prices. This is probably your best food option near the lake itself.
  • La Vista Coffee & Roastery : New-ish cafe with amazing swing set views of the Batur volcano and Kintamani caldera from above. Great spot for photos.
  • Lakeview Restaurant & Hotel : They have Chinese, Indian, & Indonesian food with one of the best caldera views.

  • Credit Cards: Not accepted at most restaurants, hotels, & other things in Kintamani. Cash is king.
  • ATM: There are a handful of ATMs scattered along the main road above Kintamani Bali, and one at Toya Devasya hot springs, but I don’t know if they work. Best to bring extra cash.
  • WiFi: Hotels in the area generally have WiFi good enough for surfing, but not streaming. This is improving quickly though.
  • Cell Service: We had great reception in Kintamani with Telkomsel. Better than in Denpasar city, actually!

volcano in bali to visit

Kintamani Entrance Fee

As of 2022, the locals in Kintamani are charging an entrance fee to anyone visiting or passing through the area.

These are the current fees:

  • Foreigners: 50k IDR (~$3 USD)
  • Domestic: 20k IDR
  • Locals (Bali): 10k IDR

It’s a very silly fee that doesn’t accomplish anything, and even Balinese locals from elsewhere on the island are being charged a fee.

Apparently these fees have had very negative effects on the local businesses in Kintamani, and many hotels and restaurants are suffering as a result.

Hopefully the leadership sees how unreasonable these fees are, and gets rid of them soon.

Best Time To Visit

The weather in Kintamani is nice any time of year.

It sits in the mountains at an unusually high elevation compared to the rest of Bali, so the temps are quite a bit cooler — up to 10 °C cooler than at sea level.

If you plan to do hiking, the best months are May to November, when there’s less rain and the mountain visibility is better.

The rainy season months will still work for hiking too, but you might want to bring a rain jacket just in case.

volcano in bali to visit

How Long To Stay

You can see the best sights of Kintamani in a couple days, but you’ll probably want to stay longer because of the fresh mountain air and laid back pace of life.

Happy travels!

Where To Stay

Nowadays there are lots of great budget friendly Kintamani hotel options . See below for some recommendations.

One of the big advantages to staying in a Kintamani hotel is that you have easy access to the Batur volcano so you can wake up later for the hike.

That means starting the hike at 4 AM, instead of 1-2 AM if you do it as a day trip from other areas of Bali like Ubud, Kuta, or Sanur.

We were able to walk directly to the volcano from our Kintamani hotel in just a few minutes!

Bali Private Driver & Motorbike Rental

If you want to explore Bali in the comfort and safety of a private car with an English speaking driver, my top recommendation would be GetYourGuide .

Their price is 650k Rupiah ($45 USD) for a full day of driving and sightseeing in Bali (up to 10 hours) for 1-5 passengers. That's the total price for the whole car + driver + petrol! It's a great deal. They also offer affordable hotel transfers from the airport.

If you'd rather travel by motorbike, they have that too. Their scooter rentals start at 140k Rupiah (~$9) and include a helmet, rain coat, and free delivery in the south Bali area.

We've used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they're great! Highly recommended.

How to Visit Mount Batur in Bali - An Active Volcano

Mount Batur is an active and beautiful volcano , 1,717 meters (5,633 feet) high, that sits next to the biggest lake in Bali . The ready access and close proximity to Ubud and Denpasar has made it a tourist highlight.

There is road access and several easy and medium difficulty trails to hike to the top . Depending on the trail, the hiking can be a little rugged, but it is doable even for people not used to hiking if they are in good shape.

There is a surprising long list of things to do at and immediately around Mount Batur because it sits inside the caldera of a very big volcano.

  • Is It Safe to Visit
  • What to See and Do
  • Recommended Hiking Routes
  • Best Time to Go
  • Pack Before Visiting

1. Is It Safe to Visit the Mount Batur?

The rim of the volcano has steam rising from it. It last erupted in 2000. Geologists think they can predict when it will erupt, so they have declared that hiking is safe. It has erupted periodically six times in the last century.

Visitors are not supposed to hike on the Mount Batur independently. You must be accompanied by a guide

Contact us to arrange a guide as well as the transportation (and everything else for a Bali tour )

2. What to See and Do on Mount Batur?

1) see the scenery and the volcano rim.

From lookout points near Mount Batur:

Most visitors who come to the area just want to see the volcano and caldera scenery from the rim of the outer volcano. People ride to observation points where the tourists congregate.

On a clear day, the view of the night sky and the distant scenery is so clear that everything seems near. On cloudy and foggy days, you might not be able to see anything. So be aware of the weather when you are preparing to go there, and maybe build in some flexibility in your itinerary to allow you to visit in clear weather. ( Best and Worst Times to Visit Bali & When is the Rainy Season )

Two excellent observation spots are on Mount Penulisan and at Penelokan Village. Mount Penulisan is one the two high mountains near Mount Batur, and at the top there is a Hindu Temple. You can see the north coast from there.

From the top of Mount Batur:

You can look down and see the huge caldera about you, Lake Batur, and the mountains of the outer volcano. The scenery is amazing, and it is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset.

2) See the beautiful lake

Lake Batur is 7 km (4 miles) long, 2.5 km (1.5 miles) wide, and 60 meters (200 ft) deep.

At the large lake, you could fish and ride a boat, but swimming is not allowed because the people there drink the water.

Some guides also provide for tent camping on Mount Batur. This usually means that people hike up in the afternoon, have dinner, stay in a tent overnight, and enjoy the sunrise and have breakfast.

You could also tent camp in the caldera area.

4) Cook on Mount Batur

This may surprise you, but the mountain is actually hot! Near the crest, steam comes out of vents in some places, and guides often bring things like fish from the lake, eggs, veggies, bananas, yams, and other foods to have a unique meal.

People can dig into the ground, place the food to cook for a couple of hours, and brew tea, coffee, and native chocolate drinks.

5) Enjoy a hot spring

In the large caldera area, there are numerous hot springs. Your guide could take you to favorite ones, or you could check into a spa. There are many such springs in Kintamani.

Suggested reading: How to Plan a 1–2-Week First Trip to Bali

3. How to Get to Mount Batur?

Mount Batur is easily accessible, within about 2 hours from most of the main tourist areas of Bali.

  • From beach areas : The most popular beach areas of Uluwatu, Seminyak, Kuta, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, and Canggu, are about 90 minutes away from the base of Batur.
  • From Denpasar and Denpasar Airport : About 90 minutes or less.
  • From Ubud : The drive takes an hour or less.

4. Recommended Hiking Routes on Mount Batur

There are several routes that guides use to take hikers to the top of Mount Batur volcano.

1) Hike from Kintamani Village: Beginners and People Not in Shape

For a short and easy route, from Kintamani Village, you can be driven up to near the top of the mountain. From there, you need to walk a bit. This is the most popular and easiest walking route.

2) Start Near the Lake at Purajati: More Strenuous Longer Routes

Hiking on this route is an adventure in itself because it is strenuous, slightly dangerous, interesting, and very scenic. But a beginner hiker who's in shape can do it. Much of the trail is on volcanic ash.

The walk on the trail takes about 2 hours including breaks. In the early mornings, people use flashlights and headlamps.

It would be dangerous to be on the trail if it rains or a storm picks up. But the guides are very careful about checking the weather to avoid this happening.

Contact us to arrange an expert local guide for you, and depending on what you want to do (stay overnight, have a fresh meal cooked on top, etc.), your guide would provide the equipment, food, and drink.

Suggested reading: The Top 6 Hiking Places in Bali & Best Time to Hike

5. When is The Best Time to Go to Mount Batur?

If you are planning a trip to Mount Batur, be aware of Bali's seasons. The rains and storms of the rainy season get heavy about the month of October and continue until about April. Sometimes, the rain and fog are so dense, you cannot see any scenery, and during a heavy downpour, you would probably not want to be hiking.

August is the best hiking month : The best time to hike is the May–September dry season. The best month is probably August since it's the driest month when Bali only gets about 4 days of rain on average with a low average rainfall of about 3 cm (1 inch). It is also the coolest month of the year, though still 23–30°C (73–86°F) on average at sea level, which makes trekking easier if you go up when the sun is shining. There is no shade on the slopes.

Tourist crowds : August and July are the two busiest months for international tourism. So, if you go in the summer, be aware there probably will be others hiking up the trails with you. There is a shack on top where you can buy refreshments for a couple of dollars. It affords some protection from the weather too. These are also the busiest months for tourism, when most tourists like to hike up.

Suggested reading: Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Bali & When is the Rainy Season

6. What to Pack Before Visiting the Mount Batur?

Clothing for warmth : It's about 10°C (18°F) cooler on the top of Batur compared to sea level. Take some warmer clothing with you especially if you hike before dawn.

Clothing for hiking : Bring good hiking shoes, long trousers, socks, a sweater, a wind jacket, and an extra T-shirt. Don't forget to also pack a flashlight, sunscreen, water, and some snacks.

1. Mount Batur

Volcano, Bali, Mount Batur, Volcanoes in Bali, Volcano Trekking

Located in the village of Kintamani in north-eastern Bali, Mount Batur is easily the most popular volcano among tourists. The active volcano rises to a height of 1717 m above sea level and is considered holy by the locals. The trek is a fairly easy one compared to the other volcanoes in Bali and first-timers can attempt it without fear of extreme fatigue. As you complete your early morning 3 hour climb to the top , you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the sunrise over the caldera’s lake and Mount Rinjani in the distance.

Here’s how our traveller Shilpa enjoyed her trek up Mount Batur, planned by our Pickyourtrail planning team!

 Difficulty level                 – Easy

Time taken for the trek  – 3 hours

Recommended for          – People who are new to volcano trekking and prefer a relatively easy trek.

Cost of trek package       – 3500 to 4000 INR per person

2. Mount Agung

Volcano, Bali, Mount Agung, Volcanoes in Bali, Volcano Trekking

Unlike Mount Batur, trekking up Mount Agung is a very demanding activity, and definitely not for those of us who need to take a couple of minutes to catch our breath after conquering a flight of stairs. Mount Agung is the highest point in Bali, with the enormous volcano towering a whopping 3031 metres above sea level! The volcano is home to the revered Pasar Agung temple and the mother temple of Besaikh. The trek generally starts at either of these two locations, with the former route taking 4 to 5 hours to reach the summit, and  the latter demanding an arduous trek of 6 to 7 hours.

 Summit height                – 3031 m

 Difficulty level                 – Hard

Time taken for the trek  – 6 to 7 hours

Recommended for          – Experienced climbers/ trekkers, People who possess reasonably high levels of physical fitness.

Cost of trek package       – 7000 to 9500 INR

3. Mount Catur

Volcano, Bali, Mount Catur, Volcanoes in Bali, Volcano Trekking, Puncak Mangu

Housed in the Bratan Caldera in the northwest part of Bali, Mount Catur is an extinct volcano. Standing at 2096 m, Mount Catur or Pucak Mangu as it is commonly called by the locals, is the fourth highest of the volcanoes in Bali. The trek offers picturesque views, with the trail dotted by serene shrines and other historically significant spots. Averaging 3 to 4 hours to reach the summit, the trek takes you through beautiful forests, so take your time to enjoy the views and the places. A breathtaking view of the three lakes of the Bratan Caldera awaits you at the top, along with the summit temple of Pura Pucak Mangu, where Indonesians still come to offer prayers. While the Mount Catur trek isn’t as difficult as Mount Agung, it still requires a moderate amount of physical fitness.

 Summit height                – 2096 m

 Difficulty level                 – Moderate

Time taken for the trek  – 3 to 4 hours

Recommended for          – Those who want to explore shrines and the mountain’s natural splendour and enjoy picturesque views.

Cost of trek package       – 5000 INR and above

4. Mount Batukaru

Volcano, Bali, Mount Batukaru, Volcanoes in Bali, Volcano Trekking

Located in the Tabanan regency of Bali, the dormant Mount Batukaru is the second highest volcano in Bali. The stark difference between this trek and the rest is that dense tropical rainforests mark the trail up Mount Batukaru. The trail is hidden away from the populated and more touristy areas of Bali, and dense forest cover often blocks the views. If you want a respite from the crowded treks and places of Bali, the Batukaru volcano trek is a must-do. Through the 5 hour trek, you will be able to spot some of the local wildlife, like the Macaque monkey, the Pangolin and small deer species, among others.

The view at the top is a sight to behold, as you will be able to see the Bedugal lakes, Mount Agung and the island of Java, all while enshrouded in the complete tranquility of the gunung’s rainforest.  You can also visit the numerous temples that dot the trail.

 Summit height                – 2275 m

Time taken for the trek  – Around 5 hours

Recommended for          – People who want to go off the beaten track and enjoy walking through serene tropical rainforests away from the populated areas.

Cost of trek package       – Around 6000 INR

5. Mount Rinjani

Volcano, Bali, Mount Rinjani, Volcanoes in Bali, Volcano Trekking

Mount Rinjani, though not in Bali, is THE defining volcano trekking experience for people visiting Bali. Imagine a 3 day 2 night trek where you camp out in the mountains at night, with the stars above you and the Segara Anak crater lake resting beside you, far away from civilization! That is what the Mount Rinjani trek offers. At 3726 m, it towers over the volcanoes in Bali, being the second highest volcano in all of Indonesia. Located at Lombok, which is a half-hour flight journey from Bali, the enormous mountain dominates the relatively small island that houses the volcano and the national park it is a part of.

While the view from the summit is nothing short of incredible and the trek is dotted by beautiful lakes, waterfalls, hot springs and the like, do not attempt this trek if camping out and some heavy-duty trekking is not your thing.

 Summit height                – 3726 m

Time taken for the trek  – Multi-day, depending on the package you want. 2D1N or 3D2N recommended.

Cost of trek package       – Prices for a couple vary from 10000 to 15000 INR for the 3D2N package + 1000 to 2000 INR for a quick flight from Bali to Lombok

Bonus: Tips Before You Go Volcano Trekking In Bali!

  • Wearing comfy shoes with good grip. Investing in a decent trekking shoe is recommended since some terrain can be difficult to handle without.
  • Wear clothing in layers. It gets colder as you get to the summit. Sweat absorbent clothing is recommended, since you’ll sweat during the ascent.
  • A head torch is a must, since many trekking trips begin very early in the morning (2 am to 4 am) in order to catch the sunrise at the top.
  • Carry lots of water to avoid dehydration. Food and water can also be purchased from sellers on the way, if you don’t plan to carry your own food.
  • Book a local guide. While some treks can be attempted without one, having a guide is practical and just smart, and will mostly add to the experience.
  • Trekking is best done in the local dry season of April to September. Plan your trekking trips accordingly.
  • Respect the local culture. The Balinese are a very nice and helpful people, so it’s only right that you respect them too.

So what are you waiting for? Put on your trekking shoes, pull up your sleeves, and go conquer the volcanoes in Bali!

  • The Ultimate Guide to Volcano Treks in Bali

by Stephanie Mee | Travel Tips , Natural Bali

volcano in bali to visit

Trekking a volcano in Bali is an absolute must for adventure junkies, as the views from the peaks are incredible, especially if you make it up in time to see the sun rising over the lakes, valleys and coastlines below. We often get asked questions about the differences between hiking Bali’s various volcanoes, so we decided to put together this handy guide on the best volcano treks in Bali broken down from easiest to hardest with tips on what you can expect when trekking each volcano.

Batur Caldera

The Batur Caldera Sunrise Trek is Gede’s favourite because the climb is relatively easy and the views from the top are spectacular. The trek takes you up the caldera wall of the Batur volcano opposite the cone of Batur on the other side of the lake. It only takes about an hour from the starting point at the Pura Ulun Danu Batur temple to get to the top of the caldera wall, and the pathways are pretty clear and easy-going. From the top of the caldera wall you can see the peak of Mount Batur and Mount Agung in one direction, and the ocean and coastline on the other. On a clear day you can even see all the way to Lombok across the ocean.

Good for: Trekkers who want an easy-going, quick climb that still offers amazing views. Definitely a good choice for all fitness levels!

  • Mount Batur

The Mount Batur Sunrise Trek is our most popular trek by far because it only takes about one and a half to two hours to reach the top and the views from the summit are pretty epic, as you can see the sun rising above the clouds and illuminating the caldera and lake below. Plus you can explore the unique features of the active volcano like lava fields, steam pockets and caves. Although the trek is not particularly difficult, it can be challenging at times, as some of the pathways are rocky and there are some steep sections. Keep in mind too that because this is such a popular trek, there will most likely be plenty of people on the trails and at the peak.

Good for: Trekkers with relatively good fitness levels who don’t mind a bit of a hike and sharing the mountain with other trekkers.

Mount Abang

If you’re looking to climb a volcano in Bali that offers a bit of a challenge, incredible views and few crowds, Mount Abang is a good choice. Not so many people know about this volcano, but it is actually the third highest mountain in Bali after Mount Agung and Mount Batukaru. It was originally part of Mount Batur, but an eruption caused it to split from Batur, and it now rests on the other side of the lake from the Batur cone. The trek starts easy enough through a peaceful forest, and then it slowly gets steeper the higher you go. The trek takes about one to two hours each way, depending on your fitness level and speed.

Good for: Trekkers who are looking to escape the crowds and don’t mind climbing steep pitches. This is also a good option for those who don’t want to get up at the crack of dawn, as we offer day trips that start later in the morning.

Mount Batukaru

Mount Batukaru is the second highest volcano in Bali and it is located on the west side of the island. Most of the mountain is covered in thick forests that provide plenty of shade and a home for wildlife like monkeys, civets and deer. The trek starts off pretty easy-going and then gets quite challenging the closer you get to the summit. Once you arrive at the top, you can see all of Bali spread out below and the peaks of Mount Agung, Mount Rinjani across the ocean, and on a clear day even some mountains on Java to the east. The trek takes about 4 to 5 hours going up and about 3 hours coming down.

Good for: Trekkers who are in good physical shape and don’t mind trekking through jungle for most of the journey. You can also opt to camp out overnight at the top if you want to break up the trip.

Mount Catur

Also known as Pucak Mangu, Mount Catur is located in Bali’s central highlands, and it is the fourth tallest mountain in Bali at 2,096 meters. The trek starts at Lake Bratan and follows a trail along the edge of the lake before making its way up the mountain in a gentle incline that steadily increases as you get higher. Most of the mountain is covered in forest, but every so often you can catch glimpses of the lake below. From the top you can see all of Lake Bratan and Bedugul spread out before you. The trek up takes about 2 to 3 hours, and for the most part the trails are clear and easy to follow.

Good for: Trekkers who are in relatively good shape and want something a little bit different than the usual Mount Batur climb.

**Note: Catur is not recommended in the rainy season (October – March) because leeches can be a problem.

Mount Agung

Mount Agung is the highest peak in Bali at 3,033 meters above sea level, and it is also the most challenging trek on the island. There are two starting routes: one starting at Pura Besakih that takes about six hours to reach the highest western peak, and one starting at Pasar Agung that takes about three to four hours to reach the southern peak. Both routes start in the jungle and then open up into steep rocky sections the higher you climb. This is not an easy trek, but the views from the top are definitely worth the effort.

Good for: Experienced trekkers who are physically fit and can handle long, steep treks up rocky slopes. If you’re looking for the ultimate Bali volcano challenge, this is it!

20+ Tips for Hiking Mt. Batur at Sunrise in Kintamani!

' src=

I just went on a fantastic weekend trip to Kintamani, Bali’s wonderful Volcano Capital.  On my trip, I hiked the famous Mt. Batur volcano for sunrise, as well as soaked in the natural hot springs, and visited some Kintamani cafes with  astounding views – Please enjoy these travel tips for trekking Mt. Batur!

✔️ Climbing Mount Batur Quick Guide

👉  What You Need to Know:  Due to the “Volcano Association” (tourism mafia) you need a guide or tour to be allowed to hike Mt. Batur.  🌋  The Best Mt. Batur Sunrise Tour  →  Check Rates & Dates Here!   🚗  If You Don’t Want to Trek:  You can take a Jeep tour to Mt. Batur’s peak instead of climbing.  🛵  How to Get Around Kintamani:  There is no Grab in Kintamani, instead I recommend taking a guided tour that includes transport or renting a scooter and driving yourself to get around. For scooter rentals in Bali, I recommend Bikago .  🥾  How Hard is the Hike?  Mount Batur is a moderate trek that is 500 meters in elevation and should take 1-2 hours to complete depending on your fitness level. If you don’t want to hike, you can pay to take a motorbike taxi 4/5 of the way up.

All About Mount Batur – The Most Famous Volcano in Bali

Climbing Mount Batur for sunrise is the most popular volcano trek in Bali , and it’s the second tallest peak after Mount Agung. Every day, hundreds of tourists make the trip to Kintamani, starting the hike up to Batur’s caldera in the middle of the night to see the best sunrise in all of Bali. Although Mount Batur is considered an active volcano, you won’t see any lava there. Gunung Batur hasn’t erupted since the year 2000, and while it’s monitored for volcanic activity, Mount Batur is generally considered safe for climbing.

👉 The Government Trying to Shut Down Mt. Batur: In June 2023, the Balinese government announced that they would be shutting down all volcano hikes in Bali, due to poor behavior from tourists – However, this new legislation hasn’t come to pass yet, so you should climb Mount Batur while it’s still open to the public.

Hikers on a Kintamani Volcano Tour of Mt. Batur in Bali wait for sunrise at the peak of the mountain. Their headlamps cut through the fog and create beams of light.

My Top Tips for Climbing Mt. Batur

✅ be aware you need a guide to climb mount batur dur to the volcano “association” (mafia).

While Mt. Batur is a relatively easy hike, you still  need  to have a guide! This is because the locals have banded together to form a “Volcano Association” that enforces the mandatory guide rule. Every week, new stories come out from tourists who tried to bypass the guide rule and sneak onto the mountain, resulting in them being harassed, and sometimes physically barred entry to Mt. Batur. I asked our guide about this regulation, and he had three answers for why tourists need a guide to hike Mt. Batur:

  • Preservation of the mountain:  Mt. Batur is considered a sacred site by the Balinese people, and having a guide ensures no bad behavior (there’ve recently been some issues with tourists stripping down and filming themselves on Bali’s volcanos).
  • Tourist safety:  There was an incident where a tourist fell into Mt. Baturs caldera, and unfortunately passed away, because no one knew they were there, so no search party was enacted.
  • The Volcano Association wants tourists to pay fees for guides:  Association is another word for “mafia” while you’re traveling. Basically, the tourist mafia is when a bunch of locals get together and decide an activity  cannot  be done without a guide (even if there’s no reason the activity needs a guide).

✅ Know You Can Take a Jeep or a Motorbike Taxi if You Don’t Want to Hike to the Top

If you’re not down for a pre-dawn uphill trek, you can always take a motorbike taxi or a Jeep tour up Mount Batur. ➡️ Check Out Batur Jeep Tours! 👉  Note!  While the Jeep tours drive all the way to the viewpoint, if you take a motorbike taxi up to the caldera, you still need to hike 10-15 minutes uphill from the parking area to the summit.

Blogger Katie Caf gives a thumbs up at the camera wrapped in a woolen blanket and coat on the peak of Mt. Batur, Kintamani's volcano hike.

✅ Know it’s COLD at the Top of the Mt. Batur

You’re already at a higher elevation in Kintamani, and by the time you reach Batur’s Caldera for the sunrise viewport you’re at 1,717 meters (5,633 feet) elevation. This, coupled with the fact that the hike is done before sunrise, makes for a  cold  trip! At the summit, where everyone is just sitting and waiting for sunrise is the coldest part, there are vendors renting out blankets for 50K IDR. I rented one and was still freezing cold.

✅ Take a Combo Tour That Includes Other Activities

There are a ton of cool things to do in and around the Kintamani area besides the Volcano tour. Since the Mt. Batur volcano tour is usually done at sunrise, there are many tours available that include add-on activities for later in the day.

🌋 Top Add-On Tours & Activities in Kintamani:

  • ATV in the Lava Fields + Volcano Tour
  • White Water Rafting Tour in Ubud + Volcano Tour
  • Ubud Day Trip With Swing + Volcano Tour

✅ If You’re Hiking, Bring a Spare Shirt – Your Sweat from the Hike Freezes at the Top of the Volcano

Our tour guide told us to bring an extra shirt – I thought it was a language barrier mistranslation and he just meant to bring a jacket. Nope! It’s recommended you bring a spare change of shirts for Mt. Batur if you’re climbing. This is because you will sweat a lot during the 1-2 hour up-hill trek to the sunrise viewpoint – Once you’re at the top, aka the coldest part of the mountain, all that sweat will freeze while you wait for sunrise. We were up at the top of the caldera for around an hour, so likely not enough time to suffer from hypothermia, but bringing a spare shirt made the sunrise a  lot more comfortable  to sit through.

✅ Know That There are Tons of Different Hiking Routes to Reach the Viewpoint

Mount Batur is huge – There are many different starting points for the trek around the base of the volcano.  For example, if you start from Kintamani, you will likely take a different route to reach the viewpoint than those who embarked from Ubud, Kuta, or Canggu. Some routes are a little bit more well-paved, but overall, it’s about the same hiking difficulty for all of the paths – In the end, everyone gets the same amazing sunset.

Blogger Katie Caf photographed from behind while hiking through a foggy mountain peak on a Kintamani Volcano tour of Mt. Batur.

✅ Try to Visit Mount Batur During the Dry Season

If possible, try to plan your visit to Mount Batur during Bali’s Dry Season, which runs from May to October.  Always remember that Bali is a tropical destination, so the weather will be a little bit unpredictable. When we visited Mount Batur, it was the height of the dry season, but we still had a cloudy/foggy day. Later, I was talking to the guide, and he told me that we hiked on the only foggy day all month! So, while it’s unlikely to get bad weather during the “good” season, you still need to go with the flow a bit when it comes to Bali weather.

A basket full of egg and banana sandwiches, with two unpeeled bananas and a candy bar. You get a no-frills breakfast of boiled bananas, boiled eggs, and candy bars on all Kintamani Volcano Tours of Mt. Batur!

✅ Breakfast is Usually Included in The Tour – But Don’t Expect Much!

All of the tours for Mount Batur say something along the lines of “Private breakfast while watching the sunrise” – Sounds amazing, right? Well…Yes and no.

We did get a hot breakfast as we waited for the sun to rise on our Batur, but it was made up of boiled eggs and boiled banana mashed into some white toast 😅 – Not quite the romantic picture you’d imagine. We did the hiking tour, so all of the water, eggs, bread, etc that you’re enjoying has to be trekked up there by someone. So really, when you think about it, it’s pretty amazing they were able to get breakfast to us at all!

✅ Bring Small Bills on Your Hike for Blanket Rentals, Snacks, Coffee & Tea

I paid 50K to rent a blanket while we were waiting for sunrise, (I was freezing!), and there were also small snacks and hot beverages for sale at the lookout point.

Sunrise on a foggy day over Mt. Batur volcano with lots of tourists on a Kintamani Volcano Tour of the mountain crowding the viewpoint.

✅ Don’t Climb Mount Batur on a Weekend – It Gets MASSIVELY Crowded!

All of the volcano hikes in Bali and the outer islands are massive tourist attractions that pull hundreds and thousands of visitors every day. So, no matter which day of the week you go to hike Mount Batur, you can expect there to be a crowd. However, these crowds are the worst during the weekends – If you could plan your trip to Kintamani so you’re hiking the volcano on a weekday, you’ll have a little bit of a better time.

volcano in bali to visit

✅ Know You’re Starting the Hike in Pitch Black for Sunrise

When we set off at 3:45 AM for our Mount Batur hike it was pitch black out, and there were no street lights on the footpaths leading to the caldera.  The headlamps our tour guide provided us with were  essential  for the hike .  We took a private tour, so a bit more on the higher-end side, and the headlamps we were provided worked great. I’ve done some cheaper sunrise hikes in Indonesia where the headlamps they give you are basically just for show – If you can bring your own headlamp, just in case, that would be best. If you think a phone flashlight is enough to do the hike, think again! I tried to use my phone’s flashlight to add to the light from my headlamp and it was something like 1/10th the strength.

volcano in bali to visit

✅ Maybe Budget Two Days in Kintamani Due to Unpredictable Weather

The weather in Bali is unpredictable, and on my first time climbing Mount Batur it was too foggy to see the sunrise. The next day, however, the skies were perfectly clear. There’s nothing more frustrating than waking up at 2 AM to hike a volcano for a sunrise you can’t see! When we came back down from the volcano, our guide told us that we had been unlucky enough to climb the volcano on the only foggy day  all month  – So while bad weather at Batur is rare, it does happen. If you want to get better odds of seeing the sunrise at Mount Batur, I recommend staying in Kintamani for a few days.

✅ Bring a Sarong and an Offering to Enter the Sacred Temple

Did you know that there’s a Balinese temple 20 meters into a cave on the side of Mount Batur Volcano? There is! And you can visit Mt. Batur’s Volcano, with a few conditions: 1) You need to bring a sarong (both men and women) – Even if your legs are already covered by your clothing. 2) You also need to bring a Balinese offering to leave at the temple in order to enter.

Rocks from the site on Mt. Batur where the Balinese people source medicinal crystals.

✅ Don’t Forget Mount Batur is a Balinese Sacred Site

I n addition to the temple, all of Mount Batur Volcano, and in fact all of the Volcanos in Bali, are considered sacred sites in the Hindu religion. Our guide explained that the volcano is sacred because it’s believed to be closer to heaven – So tons of rituals are conducted on and around the caldera. After we sumitted Mt. Batur, our guide also took us to a site on the side of the mountain where the locals search through gravel for medicinal crystals. Our guide says that his grandfather has a crystal from this site, and when someone gets sick they will soak the crystal in water and rub it on afflicted areas.

Hikers sit on a mountainside on a Kintamani Volcano tour of Mt. Batur in Bali as the sun rises.

✅ Consider Leaving Even  Earlier  to Get a Good Spot

Sunrise in Bali is around 6:20 AM – We got to our hiking spot early, around 5:00, and were some of the first people there. There were limited seats at the viewpoint, and by 5:45 seats with a clear view were starting to fill up . We started the hike at 3:45 AM, if you’re with a group that has varied hiking abilities, I recommend leaving early. Most groups start the hike around 4 AM from Kintamani.

✅ Know it’s a Moderately Difficult Hike

The hike to Mt. Batur’s caldera is a straight shot up, and it usually takes hikes between 45 minutes to 2 hours to complete the entire thing.  It took us 1 hour and 15 minutes to do the hike, and all three people in my party (including the guide) were sweating heavily by the time we reached the top. Guides budget 2 hours for the hike as a default.

💪 I would classify the Mt. Batur hike as an intermediate-level hike: Some people will find it hard, others easy, depending on their fitness level.

💡  Tip!  If you don’t want to do the steep uphill hike, you can always take a Jeep tour.

Mt. Batur volcano photographed at sunrise.

How Much Does it Cost to Hike Mount Batur?

The cheapest I have seen a Mount Batur sunrise hike is around 400K IDR ($25) – This is for joining an open tour, meaning there will be one guide and a ton of hikers.  The cheapest tours don’t include breakfast or transport, you’re basically just paying entrance in the form of a “guide” because everyone is required to have a guide at Mount Batur. Most of the time, hiking Mount Batur is 500K IDR ($32), and includes a breakfast at the summit for a smaller group tour. For a private tour of Mt Batur, the overall cost will probably be between $100-200, depending on which provider you book it through.

If you’d like a private guide, the rate is based on how many people are in your party. I recommend getting a private guide if you want to do any ad-ons like walking the caldera’s rim or visiting the Balinese temple. There are lots of ad-ons you can do for a Mt. Batur tour that change the price. For example, if you want to take the Jeep up instead of hike, that’s an extra expense. Many tour providers also offer options with transportation from Ubud, or add-on tours like white water rafting you can do after your tour.

My Experience Trekking Mt. Batur for Sunrise

We started our Kintamani volcano tour at 3:30 AM with a cup of 3-in-1 sachet coffee and our guide passing us 2 water bottles, each. We had a later start than most because we decided to spend a few days in Kintamani to see the sights, but if you’re starting from Ubud, Canggu, Kuta, etc., expect to depart for your tour at 1 or 2 AM.

By 3:45 AM, we set off on our trek!

It was  absolutely freezing  on the mountain in the middle of the night, but once we started the uphill ascent the movement kept us nice and warm. Our guide gave us the option of a short, medium, or long trek – We chose the medium because we wanted to do a walk on the volcano’s rim.

Since we were departing from Kintamani, we took a lesser-traveled path than the one most travelers take. If you’re starting your tour from Ubud, you will be beginning your trek from the West side of the volcano – On the West side, there are larger and more nicely paved roads, since it gets  far  more tourists.

We were starting our trek on the South-East side of the volcano, and for the most part, the path was unmarked. Many people talk about how you “don’t need a guide” for Mt. Batur, but for the route we took, I was happy we had him!

The path we took was steeper than the usual Mt. Batur path – Our guide gave us the option to walk on the more well-paved road instead, but that road was shared with the motorbike taxis zooming up the mountain, so we chose to stick to the walking path. The bonus of taking the more remote trek up the mountain, and also for leaving a bit early, is that we were the only other people I saw on our whole hike up!

A wild Balinese cat, also called a sunda leopard cat, spotted in the dark while on a Kintamani Volcano Tour to Mt. Batur's caldera before sunrise. The cat is grey with spots.

The hike was mostly done in the dark, and the woods, so it’s not that scenic – The high point of our trek was when we saw a wild Balinese cat hunting on the volcano. Our guide called it a “Luwuk”, which is the animal that the famous  Balinese Cat Poop Coffee  is made from – This cat looked completely different from the Luwuks I’ve seen in  coffee plantations around Bali – Later, we googled the cat and found it was actually a Sunda Leopard Cat! It was an unexpected treat to see a wild animal on our volcano trek I never even knew existed in Bali.

We reached the Caldera’s viewpoint at around 5 AM, so the trek took us an hour and fifteen minutes. We had chosen to take the steeper and faster of the two paths, and our guide made a big fuss that this was the “fastest he had ever hiked with foreigners!” … But, I’m not sure how much I believe that haha. I know some very fit and tall guys who did the Batur trek in around 45 minutes!

At 5 AM, the viewpoint was pretty much empty and we had our choice of seats. As more people reached the summit, the viewpoint got more and more crowded. By 6 AM, most of the seats were full.  I was freezing the entire hour we were waiting for the sunrise!

volcano in bali to visit

Our guide had advised us to bring a second shirt, and I was so grateful he did because the undershirt I was wearing under my puffer coat was soaked with sweat after the trek. Even after changing into a dry shirt + wearing a puffer coat, I was still so incredibly cold that I rented a blanket from one of the women at the summit for 50K IDR.

Unfortunately, our sunrise was lackluster.  The iconic Mt. Batur sunrise is above the clouds, but unfortunately for us, we were inside the clouds instead! The fog was as thick as pea soup, and we couldn’t see a thing – It was still cool after the sunrise to explore Batur’s caldera and see nothing but white fog all around us. Luckily, we were staying in Kintamani for a few days, so we got to see a gorgeous sunrise over Mt. Batur the next day.

What to Bring

Truthfully you don’t need much for a Mt. Batur trek, snacks and water are available on the mountain, and blankets are available to rent if you get cold. Here are some things I recommend to consider bringing:

  • Jacket:  Carry an extra layer for the Mount Batur sunrise trek. You’ll likely shed it as you warm up during the hike but may need it again at the summit while waiting for the sunrise.
  • Extra Shirt:  It’s cold at the summit while you wait for sunrise, and your sweat from the exertion of the hike up will freeze. This poses a risk of hypothermia, but really it’s just uncomfortable. I recommend bringing an extra base layer to change into.
  • Headlamp:  While Mount Batur sunrise trekking tours offer basic headlamps, they don’t always work. I travel with my own after getting a few duds.
  • Good Shoes:  While regular sneakers are good enough, sturdy hiking shoes are preferable for the Mount Batur hike. Hiking sandals are an option, but avoid flip flops, considering slippery gravel and steep inclines or declines.
  • Poncho:  If you visit during the rainy season, especially from December to February, consider bringing a rain jacket as a precaution. However, I wouldn’t recommend trying to climb during this season because if it’s cloudy you can’t see the views.
  • Camera With Flash:  If you have a small and lightweight point-and-shoot camera that includes flash that would be perfect for this pre-dawn hike.
  • Drone:  If you have a drone, Mt. Batur is the perfect place to set it off to get aerial views of the volcano’s caldera.

Can you visit Bali’s Mountains and Volcanos?

Yes, you can visit Bali’s Mountains and climb Volcanos. You might have heard in the news, that Bali’s former Governor Koster issued a decree, forbidding climbing Bali’s mountains. This came as a response of several social media posts, were tourists gravely misbehaved, disrespecting the holy sites and Bali’s cultural integrity overall. Yet, this decree has not been enforced and as it turned out, was not based on legal ground. There is no ban on visiting the mountains and volcanos. Some mountains might be temporarily closed at times, but the reasons will be usually weather conditions, volcanic activities, or ceremonies.

Which Bali volcano should you climb?

volcano in bali to visit

Climbing a volcano might not be an obvious activity in Bali, with so many white sand beaches just waiting to be laid on, and turquoise waters just waiting to be swum in. But if you’re planning to be in Bali for a decent amount of time, or if you live in Bali and have explored every beach on the island (that’s an impressive achievement, by the way), it’s definitely worth doing a trek or two to one of Bali’s gunung merapi .   But before you rise at the crack of dawn and put on your trekking shoes, there are a few things you should know — like whether the volcano you’re climbing matches your fitness level or length of time you’re willing to spend trekking.   Here are our tips on which Bali volcanoes you might want to consider getting your trek on, depending on how fast you get out of breath when you’re tackling tanjakan s by foot or your tolerance level for leg-soreness.

1. MOUNT BATUR

Gunung Batur is probably the “most climbed by tourist volcano” in Bali. While the trek is definitely not a walk in the park, it doesn’t take too long to get to the summit. Climbers have reported climbing time of one and a half hours to two and a half hours, which is definitely doable for novice climbers.     Mt. Batur is an active volcano, and also has the largest crater-lake in Bali. The hike is mostly off road trails and rocky terrain. While the trek can’t exactly be done in flip flops, experienced climbers have commented that the landscapes aren’t too challenging—local regulations require you to to climb with a guide (you can try going without one, but it’s likely that you’ll get aggressively harassed at the foot of the mountain by the Association of Mt. Batur Trekking Guides).   Sunrise treks to Batur are a popular option. You have to get up at the ungodly hour of 2 am to get picked up, and then you start the trek around 4 am. At the top of the climb you will be rewarded with the view of sunrise and a breakfast that includes eggs cooked on lava-heated rocks. Trekkers who’ve done this said that the view of the sunrise is worthwhile, though they lamented that getting up at 2 am was something they’ll probably only do once.   Mt. Batur IS the volcano for you if:  You want an easy(ish) climb and don’t mind sharing your trek with tourists who feel the same way.

Mt. Batur IS NOT the volcano for you if:  You see a two-hour climb as a “light-walk” and are looking for physical challenges as well as incredible views.

volcano in bali to visit

2. MOUNT AGUNG

For the savvy trekkers, physical activity enthusiasts and serious mountain climbers—Gunung Agung won’t disappoint. However, those who shudder at the thought of running five kilometers probably won’t enjoy this trek.

Mt. Agung is Bali’s highest point, a stratovolcano  standing at 3,031 meters—which means that the trek up there is definitely for the fit among us. The routes are also much more difficult to follow than Mt. Batur, so hiring a guide is recommended (even for experienced climbers, otherwise you might end up like these poor naive tourists here ).

There are three main routes to climb up to the summit.   From Besakih, it is about a six to seven hour ascent to the summit (with the final hour being the most challenging). From Pura Pasar Agung, it is a three to four hour climb, which starts as a trek through the dusty, thick forest, before transitioning into a long climb over rocks and boulders, and then moving on to the most difficult part, an extremely steep ascent to the top with no ropes or harnesses (and may or may not involve walking over solidified lava). The third route, starting from Duku Bujangga Sakti is the least used (but also the least demanding) route, with the option of camping at 1700 meters for those who wish to break to save energy. This route also allows you to circle the rim of the crater.   Mt. Agung IS the volcano for you if: You are a serious and an experienced climber who is not phased by unmarked tracks and harsh conditions that volcano summits can sometimes pose.

Mt. Agung IS NOT the volcano for you if: You are an impatient and novice climber and protest to having your body absolutely destroyed after the climb.

volcano in bali to visit

3. MOUNT CATUR (BRATAN CALDERA)

The Bratan Caldera is located in the northwest of Bali and is a stunningly beautiful area with lakes, waterfall, and a botanical garden. The Temple at Lake Bratan (Pura Ulun Danu Bratan) is probably Bali’s most photographed temple on the island after Tanah Lot.   Mt. Catur is the summit you want to climb up to (we’ve been told it’s the one with the most breathtaking view). Unlike Mt. Batur and Mt. Agung, this volcano is extinct so you won’t be able to eat lava-rock cooked eggs at the summit.  You start the hike at Lake Bratan at Gua Jepang (literally translated to “Japanese Cave”—supposedly built by Indonesian prisoners of war during Japanese occupation). The hike is roughly three hours up with many picturesque landscapes during the journey as well as various shrines and remains of sites where the Dutch used to flock for their weekend retreats. At the top you will be met with a beautiful view of Lake Bratan and its surroundings as well as a temple called Pura Puncak Manggu.   While the toughness of the hike no way compares to Mt. Agung, if your fitness is below-average you might want do some endurance training before attempting this climb.

Mt. Catur IS for you if:  You want a picturesque area that you can explore or chill-out in after your hike, or you want to be able to hike and do other activities in the same day (i.e. watersports in Lake Bratan).

Mt. Catur IS NOT for you if: You are looking for a leisurely hike or a serious challenge. Mt. Catur probably falls somewhere in the middle.

volcano in bali to visit

4. MOUNT BATUKARU

Mt. Batukaru is the second-highest mountain in Bali. It is a dormant volcano.   What sets Mt. Batukaru apart from its fellow mountains is its landscape—very dense forests. Unfortunately this means lack of lookout points—but we think that the unique terrains makes up for it.   The shady nature of the forest possibly makes this gunung less popular than the others, because Instagram has made people’s obsession of getting lookout photos to document evidence that they’ve climbed a mountain even worse. On a clear day though, the Batukaru summit allows for breathtaking views of the crater, Bedugul lakes, Mt. Agung and even Java.   The trek is about five hours long, so definitely not a stroll. As it is a tropical forest, you might even see some wildlife running around, such as the little civets responsible for defecating into Bali’s famous Kopi Luwak, kijangs (small deer), and macaques (leaf eating monkeys).   Mt. Batukaru IS the volcano for you if: You love walking through tropical rainforests and you want to go somewhere that is definitely way off the tourist trail.

Mt. Batukaru IS NOT the volcano for you if: You envisage taking selfies at lots of lookout points throughout the hike.

volcano in bali to visit

5. MOUNT RINJANI (LOMBOK)

OK, we know it’s a bit of a stretch to call Mt. Rinjani a “Bali” volcano since it’s not actually in Bali. But Lombok being just a very quick plane ride away, it would be wrong NOT to include Mt. Rinjani on the list.   For starters if what you’re looking for is a multi-day, over-night adventure, you might think that Bali volcanoes are all way too tame for you (apart from the active part, we guess).   Climbing to the summit of Mt. Rinjani will likely involve a three day trek, spending some nights camping in the mountains. You can do it in less, but then you won’t get to visit the amazing crater lake Segara Anak and take a dip in the nearby volcanic hot springs, which is going to feel oh soooo good after a strenuous hike, don’t you think?   The climb geneally starts at Senaru, so best to book accommodations there prior and after the climb.   This hike is definitely not for the unfit and faint-hearted. While the view at the summit and the crater lake is nothing short of incredible, you definitely have to be prepared to rough-it for a few days, including sleeping in tents and going to the toilet in nature. Previous Mt. Rinjani trekkers have commented that while they were really glad to have done the hike, and many of them admitted that it took a toll on them physically and mentally.   Mt. Rinjani IS for you if:  You think that climbing Mt. Agung isn’t going to be challenging enough (which makes you a little bit crazy).

Mt. Rinjanis IS NOT for you if:  You are opposed to camping and can’t stand the thought of roughing it up on the mountains for a few nights.

Bali’s Volcanoes: Exploring Nature, Culture, and Adventure

Let’s discover the world of Bali’s volcanoes! These mountains are more than just pretty views. They’re key to Bali’s landscape and culture. Bali’s volcanoes shape the weather and land. They’re also sacred in Balinese Hinduism. We’ll explore Bali’s famous volcanoes like Mount Agung, Mount Batur and Mount Batukaru. These giants tell stories of nature and faith. So, get ready to learn about Bali’s volcanic wonders and their role in the island’s life!

The three main volcanoes of Bali

Bali Volcano

In Bali, three main volcanoes stand out: Mount Agung, Mount Batur, and Mount Batukaru . Each has its own story and importance.

Mount Agung is the tallest in Bali. It’s over 3,000 meters high and located in East Bali. The Balinese see it as a holy mountain. It’s also an active volcano with a tough hike, taking about six to seven hours. The view from the top at sunrise is stunning.

Mount Batur is famous for its sunrise hikes. It’s an active volcano too, but the hike is easier, taking about three hours. It’s over 1,700 meters high and has a peaceful lake at its base. The Balinese believe Mount Batur and Mount Agung bring balance to the island.

Mount Batukaru is the second highest in Bali. It’s over 2,200 meters high and not active anymore. This mountain is great for beginners who want to hike. There’s a temple, Pura Batukaru, on its slopes. It’s used for prayers and is a calm place in central Bali.

These volcanoes are more than just mountains. They’re special to Bali’s culture and people . They’re part of local beliefs and stories, making them key landmarks on this beautiful island.

Mount Agung: The Sacred Giant

Mount Agung Smoking

Mount Agung in Bali is 3,142 meters tall and is the highest mountain there. It’s in the Karangasem area in East Bali. This mountain is very important and sacred to the people in Bali. They believe a giant moved it from Java. On Agung’s side, you’ll find the Besakih Temple, a key place for Hindu worship in Bali. This temple didn’t get destroyed in Agung’s big eruption in 1963. That eruption did a lot of damage and more than a 1000 people became a victim. The mountain erupted again in 2017 and 2019.

Despite the volatility the people like to hike up Mount Agung. The trails are tough and take about six to seven hours, but you get great views at the top, especially at sunrise. There are two main paths for hiking. You need a guide because Agung is still an active volcano. When you climb Agung, it’s more than just a hike. It’s a way to connect with Bali’s nature and its spiritual side.

Mount Batur: The Adventurer’s Choice

Hiking Mount Batur

Mount Batur, over 1,717 meters high, is known for adventure in Bali. It’s an active volcano near the Kintamani hills. Batur has erupted many times, the last in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It’s popular for its sunrise hikes, which take about three hours. The trails are good for beginners and start from nearby villages.

Local people think Batur is like a woman, while Mount Agung is like a man. They believe these mountains bring harmony to Bali. Around Batur, there’s a calm lake, Danau Batur. Near the mountain, you can find places to stay and eat. People enjoy the views and learn about the volcano and the area.

Mount Batur is not just about the climb; it’s also about what you see and experience. As you hike, you’ll pass through different landscapes, from lush forests to rocky paths. The top of the volcano gives you a panoramic view of Bali. You can see the caldera, a huge crater formed by past eruptions, and Lake Batur, which adds to the scenic beauty. Early mornings are the best time for this hike, as you can watch the sunrise from the summit. It’s a breathtaking sight that makes the early start worth it.

I have hiked Mount Batur myself multiple times. It’s an amazing (but also busy) trail that is an experience of worthy for those who can wake up at 3am to travel to the Volcano.

Mount Batur View

Mount Batukaru: The Serene Peak

Mount Batukaru, the second-highest in Bali, is a serene and less-traveled peak. It stands over 2,276 meters tall in the Tabanan region. This mountain is not active and is known for its dense forests, creating a peaceful environment. It’s a key spiritual site for the Balinese, housing the Pura Luhur Batukaru Temple, one of the island’s nine directional temples.

The temple, set amidst the forest, is often used for prayers by central Bali residents. It adds to the mountain’s sacred feel. Trekking here means walking through lush greenery and spotting local wildlife. The paths are beginner-friendly. From the top, you get great views of Bali’s landscape. This makes Batukaru a special place for both nature lovers and those seeking spiritual peace.

Mount Batukaru’s trekking experience offers a unique blend of adventure and tranquility. The trails, winding through the dense forests, provide a cool and refreshing hike, different from Bali’s other volcanic treks. Hikers often find themselves enveloped in mist, adding to the mystical ambiance of the journey. The climb to the summit, while challenging, is manageable for most, making it an inclusive destination for a variety of adventurers.

Additionally, the viewpoint from the top of Mount Batukaru is nothing short of breathtaking. From here, trekkers can gaze upon the expansive beauty of Bali, including the nearby rice terraces and distant mountains. This panoramic view, combined with the spiritual aura of the Pura Luhur Batukaru Temple, makes a trek to Mount Batukaru a fulfilling experience, not just physically but also spiritually and emotionally.

Kintamani Coffee Plantations

The Kintamani region in Bali is less known for its unique Arabica coffee and more known for its lavishing green nature, high volcanos and numerous orange trees.

However, Kintamani coffee is a speciality coffee with a smooth body and characteristic taste made by numerous small family farmers who carefully pick the coffee cherries one-by-one from their decades old coffee trees.

Kintamani is the primary coffee growing region and Robusta coffee still accounts for the major part of the production in Bali, however Arabica is gaining new ground fast.

kintamani bali coffee plantations

Arabica has a stronger body and less acid than Robusta. It has also half the caffeine which means it is a perfect afternoon or evening coffee moment to stay focused, calm and energised.

The speciality coffee scene has grown fast the last few years in Bali where more and more cafe’s invest in educating Barista’s in order to make beautiful coffee but also to understand their beans.

Nowadays Coffee plantations become one the most popular tourist attractions in Bali.

Bali coffee is as unique as its origin place, and Kintamani coffee has clean, light and distinctive flavor. The combination between high humidity, the 900-1550 meters of altitude and long dry months has created unique flavor for this coffee.

Here are things you can find when you taste a cup of Kintamani coffee, especially the Arabica variant.

Coffee from Kintamani area has medium to high acidity, and it is very obvious especially if you are used to milder or instant coffee, which often makes people with low caffeine tolerance avoid Balinese coffee. Kintamani coffee also has intense characteristic, so you can expect extra punch from each sip.

nother special characteristic of Kintamani coffee, despite its high acidity, is the somewhat light flavor and low-key brightness. You can immediately taste it in your mouth; despite the kick and high acidity, the coffee tasted somewhat light, without any gritty taste or much bitterness.

This combination makes Kintamani coffee somewhat “exotic,” and great if you love clean palate after each sip, despite the coffee’s high acidity and intensity.

Kintamani coffee has the combination between medium body and bright, fruity aroma. This coffee tends to display more citrus-y aroma, such as lemon or grapefruit, albeit it can be very faint.

Unlike Java coffee, which usually has a little spicy note, Kintamani coffee is definitely fruity and bright (a little similar to Hawaiian Kona). Meanwhile, the medium body coats the inside of your mouth nicely, without leaving any gritty or bitter aftertaste.

Basically, Kintamani coffee is great for those who enjoy light but clean flavor, bright acidity, and fruity notes in their coffee.

Despite its lightness, remember that Bali coffee is generally punchy and quite strong, and not suitable for those who have low caffeine tolerance or cannot handle strong coffee.

If you want to blend coffee, you can use Kintamani as the “aromatic” part of the blend, and use heavier coffee with thicker body as the base, such as Mandheling coffee or Gayo coffee.

The Island of Bali has the right geography and climate to produce unique variants of coffee. Kintamani coffee is light, bright, punchy, and will wake you up with its aromatic fruity flavor and notes.

However, there are lots more things to do in the Batur area! For example, you can’t miss a visit to Lake Batur, which lies at the base of the volcano. Here you can soak in warm hot springs, visit sacred water temples, and gaze out over mirror-like water and majestic mountain surroundings.

The cooler volcanic landscape, which has been named a global geopark by UNESCO , is also a coffee-growing haven. So, sit back and relax with a hot cup while you take in the breathtaking views.

Here are all your hotel options in Batur.

1. Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking

The active volcano Mount Batur, also known as Gunung Batur, was formed over 25,000 years ago and rises high above the surrounding landscapes, reaching 1717 m. The best time to appreciate the stunning views is at sunrise, when a sea of pink and orange clouds can be seen floating far below.

When the clouds clear, you can also see endless valleys carpeted in lush green jungle dotted with tiny villages and the beautiful Lake Batur. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Lombok Island out in the Bali Sea. It’s worth every yawn of that early morning start!

Other interesting things to look out for from the mountain are the black lava fields far below (created by the 1968 eruption of the volcano). As you reach the summit, you may also notice the crater rim has small crevices with rising hot steam. Some of the locals use these to cook eggs as a mid-trek snack!

Tip: Watch out for the cheeky wild monkeys looking to steal your breakfast.

Guided Tour

It is required to hire a local guide or book a tour to take you up the mountain. Although Mount Batur sunrise trekking is fairly easy, a tour takes all the hassle out of the experience. Your guide will collect you from your accommodation, provide useful equipment, and tell you their expert local knowledge. You’ll also get breakfast and a cup of hot coffee at the top of the mountain.

The trek is generally very safe, with well-used paths and continuous monitoring of volcanic activity (the last eruption was over 20 years ago). This makes it a very popular hike with tourists who choose it over the much longer and more strenuous trek at Mount Agung.

The best time to hike Mount Batur is in April-October, when there is the best visibility. You will need a warm jacket, good hiking shoes, plenty of water and snacks, and your camera! Bringing your own headlamp is useful if you have one, but your guide should provide one.

How Long Does it Take to Climb Mount Batur?

It takes two hours to reach the summit, depending on your fitness level, making it roughly four hours in total. Leave some extra time at the top to enjoy the views and catch your breath. Most tour companies will pick you up at around 2 AM, leaving plenty of time to drive to the start point and trek up the mountain in time for sunrise.

If you are staying in Kintamani village, you can walk to the volcano. This is a great option if you want a slightly later start!

2. Batur Natural Hot Spring

The Batur Natural Hot Spring is a series of man-made pools that are heated geothermally by underground magma. The volcanic minerals in the natural spring water are great for your skin and relaxing your muscles – making it the perfect place to soak after your early morning hike. The water cools as it comes to the surface, so it is the perfect temperature for bathing (40°C / 105°F).

3. Pura Segara Ulun

Pura Segara Ulun is a beautiful floating temple on Lake Batur, accessed by a small bridge that crosses the water. Bali has many water temples, but this is one of the hidden gems! The authentic Hindu shrine is a very peaceful place to visit after a hectic morning of trekking. It also has a view of the volcano, so you can fully take in how far you’ve climbed.

Impressive at any time of day, it is particularly serene at sunrise, when the water is calm, and there is a stunning reflection of the temple on the golden lake. Come and breathe in the cool mountain air, marvel at the beautiful fountain statues, and listen to the soft calls of the swans swimming close by.

Did you know? This peaceful Hindu temple is similar to Ulun Danu Bratan on your way to Munduk , but without the crowds! The price is free, but we recommend giving a donation. You can rent a sarong (10,000 IDR / 0.67 USD) if you need to cover up your shoulders and knees.

4. Pinggan Sunrise

Pinggan is a rural farming village on a mountain ridge that overlooks Mount Batur, offering spectacular views of the mountain at sunrise. Seeing the Pinggan Sunrise is a relaxed early morning alternative to the two-hour hike up Mount Batur. From the ridge, which faces east, there are countless places to catch the sun coming up behind the volcano. You’ll see the valley below covered in a sea of magical clouds, and access to the viewpoints is free!

Try the popular Sukawana Sunrise Spot or the Pinggan Sunrise View . Alternatively, there are plenty of natural viewpoints or bamboo platforms where you can take in the spectacular natural scenery with no one else around.

Pinngan Sunrise or Mount Batur?

With its panoramic views, Pinggan is a great place to watch either the sunset or sunrise. However, if you can, do both! It’s possible to hike Mount Batur for sunrise and also head to the ridge at Pinggan village for sunset. If you only have the option to do one, choose Pinggan. The ridge is arguably the most beautiful sunrise spot in Bali, together with Lanhangan Sweet, close to Amed .

5. Cafes with a View

There are plenty of cute cafes on the mountain ridges that have incredible views of Mount Batur and the black lava savanna below. Sip on a cup of locally-grown coffee, grab a freshly-made pastry, and look out over one of the best views in Bali!

Our favorite cafe was Paperhills which has great food and even better drinks, with fantastic coffee and juice options. On the same street, there are loads of lovely cafes where you can buy coffee and pastries. Alternatively, head for one of the restaurants for something more filling, all with spectacular views of the volcano. Other nice spots we also enjoyed were El Lago and Kintamani Coffee .

6. Visit a Coffee Plantation

Visiting a coffee plantation is one of the top things to do in Batur, Kintamani! The fertile grounds beneath the volcano (due to volcanic ash) and cooler mountain climate has made the area around Batur the perfect place to grow coffee. Spend a few hours learning about the coffee-making process and tasting delicious local brews at one of the many plantations close to the mountain.

Coffee Tours in Batur

You can have amazing tasting experiences, however, we recommend to skip the notorious Luwak coffee. Kopi Luwak is made from coffee beans that have been partially digested by civets (a nocturnal mammal). It is one of the most expensive coffees in the world, mainly because it takes time and labor to scavenge for the limited supply of wild civet poop. For this reason, some coffee farms have started caging animals to enable mass production. Also, be aware of the trick that Luwak coffee sold are mixed with regular coffee beans.

Read: Things to know about wildlife tourism (+ better alternatives!)

Furthermore, an estimated 80% of Luwak coffee is actually fake and made from normal blends. However, you are still charged crazy prices! We think that the usual kind of Balinese coffee (that hasn’t passed through an animal) is just as delicious, so don’t waste your money on Kopi Luwak.

Instead, choose to do a tour at an organic, family-owned plantation like Bali Beans.

Best Cafes & Restaurants in Batur

There are loads of cozy cafe options in Batur, most of which have their own roastery and offer locally grown coffee with fantastic views of the volcano and the lake. There are also lots of warungs (small family-owned restaurants) that offer traditional Balinese food for very reasonable prices. Most food places can be found on Penelokan Main Road.

  • Shallot’s warung makan

Where to Stay in Batur

We’d recommend staying at least one night in the Batur area so that you can recover from the sunrise hike and fully relax in the wonderful natural surroundings. There are plenty of accommodation options around the lake, depending on your budget and taste, from hotels and villas to glamping. You’ll find most in the district of Kintamani.

Mount Batur Sunrise Hike: Everything You Need To Know

If you’re an adventurous traveler visiting Bali, a sunrise trek up Mount Batur should be on your bucket list. Located in the Kintamani district of Bali, Mount Batur is an active volcano that is one of the best (but most challenging) sunrise hikes on the island. The Mount Batur hike to the summit takes around 2-3 hours and rewards hikers with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Batur.

WHERE IS MOUNT BATUR VOLCANO

Mount Batur Volcano is in the north of Bali in the Kintamani District. It is about a 2-hour drive from Canggu/Seminyak and about one hour from Ubud. Mount Batur’s height is 5,600 feet above sea level, which is 1,707m of altitude. Also known as Gunung Batur, it is one of the most active volcanoes in Bali along with Mount Agung, which is visible from the summit.

BEST TIME TO TREK/ WEATHER

Bali is a paradise island but it can also be a very wet island. It’s best to plan your Mount Batur hike for sunrise during the dry season, which is roughly starting in May until September. That isn’t a hard and fast rule and don’t feel like you can’t visit Mount Batur outside of those months but that is the optimal period. It isn’t necessarily going to be dangerous if wet, it is more so that you might have more clouds and rain at the summit where you are trying to enjoy the beautiful sunrise!

It can get quite cold on the trek so bring a warm jacket but layer up as once the sun has risen it will be hot. A big tip is to bring an extra t-shirt so when you get to the top you can switch out your sweaty shirt and replace it with a dry and warm one. This will help keep you warm in the wind at the top.

MOUNT BATUR DIFFICULTY

Mount Batur is quite short. The first half an hour is relatively flat for a volcano trek. It does get quite steep for about 45 minutes and some people struggled a bit but for the most part, it is a moderate trek. If you take lots of breaks it is quite a moderate trek.

You can take a motorbike almost the whole way to the summit but it definitely isn’t necessary. It’s a volcano hike for the non-hikers and much easier compared to the quad-burning Mount Rinjani on Lombok .

The entire hike took us around 5 hours but we took an insane amount of photos and stops. You could really do this hike in 3-4 hours without rushing.

M OUNT BATUR HIKE ELEVATION GAIN

The Mount Batur hike elevation gain is approximately 500 meters in total gain, which is 1,650 feet.

MY MOUNT BATUR SUNRISE TREKKING EXPERIENCE

At 130 am I met the crew in Canggu and we sleepily bundled into the van and headed towards Ubud to pick up the rest of the group. It took us a couple of hours to reach the entrance to the hike. I think it was about 2.5 hours from Canggu until we made it to the jump-off point. Here we assembled, organized our gear, and headlamps, and had a quick briefing before we set off in the dark at around 4 am.

It was quite cold and most people were wearing a jacket and pants but I was in shorts and took my jacket off to start the hike as I knew it wouldn’t be long before I warmed out and started sweating. A headlamp was necessary as the ground is uneven throughout the entire hike.

The first 20 minutes of the hike is pretty flat and we powered through that section in the dark before having a quick rest. The trail was pretty busy with lots of groups also making the sunrise trek. I think a few hundred people were also on the trail although most are moving at a similar pace so there aren’t too many hold-ups until near the summit.

The second half of the trek gets quite steep and is a good morning workout. The trail turned into a series of natural steps and there were a few slips as we made the final ascent to the summit.

The sky was now starting to show some color and we made it to the summit just in time for sunrise to witness the beginning of the Mount Batur Sunrise. At the summit, there are lots of benches and huts.

It’s quite a set-up and not very natural at all but at least it is organized. That doesn’t mean it is clean. The litter on Mount Batur was pretty insane and we were actually up there doing a cleanup and collected 25 huge sacks of trash.

volcano in bali to visit

The sunrise turned out to be beautiful. We had a strong layer of clouds below us with Mount Agung peaking out over them and we could even see across to Mount Rinjani . As the sun came up, the layer of clouds turned yellow, orange, and red and Mount Batur slowly took some light as well.

It was all over pretty quickly but it was a sunrise to remember. I love being above clouds for sunrises and sunsets and they are always interesting.

volcano in bali to visit

We had hot chocolate at the summit and depending on your tour, some people had a basic breakfast prepared in small kitchen huts. Lots of monkeys hang around the summit for the scraps but they are quite friendly compared to the monkeys at the Ubud Monkey Forest Sanctuary .

volcano in bali to visit

The nice part about the hike was that we actually took a different route down and it was incredibly scenic. We followed a crumbly ridge around the edge of Mount Batur sliding our way down. After about thirty minutes we left the ridge and came to a beautiful view of the idyllic Lake Batur.

It doesn’t seem like the Bali we know and is almost a forest atmosphere. I almost forgot I was on a tropical island for a little bit.

From this viewpoint, we headed down the switchbacks until we made it back to the parking lot for the long, tired drive home. We arrived back in Canggu just after midday.

Visiting And Hiking A Volcano In Bali With Kids

Visiting kintamani at lake batur.

Just an hour from Ubud, Kintamani is home to one of the few active volcanoes in the world, Mount Batur, which has erupted many times since the 1800s. While you won’t see hot lava oozing out of its peak, the thick layer of smoke misting the lush green hills and pristine Lake Batur is arguably one the most picturesque views in Bali.

Head for the hills! For a day full of outdoor fun, head for the hills and hit the hiking trails with the kids! For daring dads (and moms too), there’s also the challenging ‘sunrise hike’, which requires one to start at 4am to reach the mountain top and enjoy the first rays of the rising sun.

The outing would not be complete with out a visit to Kintamani Lake restaurant overlooking the entire expanse of the volcanic cauldron, including the lake. Take in the sights and chill out with the fam. Nice!

Note from editor – this area has been active lately and is not safe for hiking.

Why Little Steps Loves It:

It’s an ideal way to introduce your kids to the bounties of nature while enjoying a great day out!

Who It's Perfect For:

What Else:

Indonesia travel warning: alert near holiday spot Bali as government advises against travel to danger areas

The government has issued an urgent travel warning for a number of popular hiking spots in Indonesia, including next to the holiday paradise of Bali.

British backpackers are advised against all travel to certain parts of Indonesia - including a popular hiking spot near the holiday idyll of Bali.

The government put out the warning following the eruption of Mount Ruang, a remote volcano in Northern Sulawesi, near the Philippines. This forced more than half a dozen airports to close and officials said the ash spreading as far as Malaysia.

Mount Ruang erupted three times earlier in the week (April 30) spewing more than 5km (three miles) into the sky. Authorities were forced to issue evacuation orders for 12,000 people, due to a Tsunami warning risk. The government said an exclusion zone has been put in place 7km away from Mount Ruang’s crater.

But the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has also issued warnings around other volcanoes in the south-east Asian country. It advised against all travel to within 3km of the crater of Mount Marapi in West Sumatra.

This is a popular hiking spot amongst backpackers, with many climbing to see sunrise from the “Mountain of Fire”. Marapi is Indonesia’s most active volcano, erupting in December leaving 23 climbers dead. From December 2023 to January 2024, it erupted 113 times.

The FCDO has also recommended against all travel to within 5km of Mount Sinabung, in the Karo province of North Sumatra. This is another popular tourist spot. Previously dormant, Mount Sinabung erupted for the first time in 2015 and at least 10,000 people had to be evacuated. Since then, it has erupted regularly.

Close to the holiday paradise of Bali, the FCDO has also warned against all travel to within 5km of Mount Semeru’s crater. This is just across the straights from West Bali, the most popular tourist spot in Indonesia.

Mount Semeru is frequented by hikers, but the government “advises against all travel to the southeast area of Mount Semeru along the Besuk Kobokan river (approximately 13 km from the crater)”. It added: You should stay at least 500 m from the Besuk Kobokan riverbank.”

Indonesia sees regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as a result of its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where multiple tectonic plates meet. Mount Ruang recorded a series of eruptions earlier in April that also led to evacuations and disruption to aviation amid fears of a tsunami.
