Hot pies on the go… Meet the Travel Buddy

While racking up big kilometres from campsite to campsite every day often leaves little time to worry about organising food. Especially so on those big transport legs of your trip. What if I told you, you could have some hot pies, lasagne, or roast that cooks while you drive, which makes it quite possibly the greatest addition to a touring vehicle, bar none (except maybe beer on tap in your van or tow-rig). For me, the Travel Buddy 12V Oven is nothing new; I bought mine going on about six years ago, and it sat in the shed, still in its box, neglected for all that time. It was only after a new fit-out in my trusty old ‘Cruiser (and making some room to mount it), did I finally decide to get it out of the box and working, and I’m kicking myself for not jumping on it sooner.

The Travel Buddy is essentially a 12V oven, encased in insulation, and wrapped up in stainless steel, with temperature and timer dials. It comes with a rather heavy-duty 12V cig-plug, however, it does suggest removing the plug and hardwiring it to make a firm connection and stop the plug falling out of your ciggy socket – corrugations are bad, right? At full tilt, it’ll draw 120W (or 10A) so you’ll need to make sure your socket and wiring are happy to take that sort of power draw. The factory ciggy socket in your vehicle will probably only be good for around 5A (though check the socket or your owners manual to be sure). It’ll cook anything from pies and sausage rolls to lasagne, or the small roasts you can get at Woolies that come pre-packed in the tin foil dish. From there, it’s just a matter of dialling up the temperature, setting the timer, and heading on to the next campsite.

With the size of it, you can easily fit four full-sized meat pies, on each shelf, or a pair of lasagnes side by side with the shelf removed. The unit itself doesn’t get too hot, with the front door being the only surface that’s not insulated, however after cooking up the lasagne at 180°C for two hours, I could hold my hand to the front door without getting burnt. The Travel Buddy is also fully made in Australia (Bendigo North, to be exact), and has been around for a lot of years.

If you happen to have the room to throw one in your rig, you’ll have the most popular vehicle on any trip … put it this way, lob some pies in the oven as you break camp, you’ve got lunch sorted a few hours later, then at lunch while you’re eating your pies, throw the roast and some veggies in, and it’s already cooked ready to be eaten once you get to camp.

Is it worth buying a Travel Buddy? The proof in the pudding is more the proof in the lasagne … everything we’ve thrown into this thing, even after we took the photos for this article, has come out absolutely perfect. It takes a couple of goes to get the timings right against the ‘cooking instructions’, but it works out to add about 20% more time to cooking instruction against a conventional oven. A lot of that, is due to me not ‘pre-heating’ the oven (never knew that was a thing?) and being in way too much of a hurry to get my mitts on the food! Just a word of warning, if you mount yours in a wagon, you can smell lunch about an hour before it’s cooked… Double so if it’s in the back and you switch from fresh air, to recirc. My thoughts, are you absolutely need to get your hands on one of these, if not for the ability to cook whatever you want as you’re driving to camp, but the money you’ll save from not buying pies from a servo.

Bear in mind, there are some on the market that are cheap Chinese knock-offs; Wherever I can, I will always support an Aussie business and manufacturing, even if it costs a few bob more.

This oven can be powered via the 21cm-long cigarette lighter plug, however, for the safest and most reliable connection, it’s recommended to use the included 1m-long 50Amp Anderson plug. The oven will draw 10.8 Amps/130 Watts when it’s cranked to its 180°C maximum and has a lower temperature range all the way down to 0°C. The element is enclosed within the bottom of the oven and heat is transferred throughout with the conduction of metal and convection in the air. Inside the oven are 2 x removable stainless steel wire racks and 1 x stainless steel grill tray. There are also 2 mounting brackets that slot into either side of the oven and can be screwed into a stable surface for secure and permanent mounting.

Hello, I was wondering if you knew of a trivet which may fit the tray of this oven?

G'day Leanne, We don't have anything in our range, and admittedly it's not something we've been asked for before. I'd suggest a kitchen wears shop might be a good place to start, you may be able to find something like a small closed mesh cooling rack that would fit. Sorry to not be of more help.

G'day John, Yes, the door on this 12v oven is insulated. In terms of an oven thermometer, it may be something best sourced from a kitchenware shop - I'm sure they'd have something suitable.

Could you tell me if this oven is fully insulated with cool to touch feature and can be mounted in a cupboard or cavity as compared to others on market that look identical to yours thanks

G'day Graeme, This oven is fully insulated,  whilst they can generally be warm on the outside you can still touch them, they won't burn you. Much like competing 12v ovens, however they cannot be built-in or enclosed in a cupboard or cavity for safety and ventilation reasons.

Harmony Visage Retreat At Devprayag

Harmony Visage Retreat At Devprayag was curated by our dear friend and mentor Dr Parveen Kanda from the wanderers. I was one of the organizers of the retreat and I must say that Dr Kanda is extremely professional and highly organized! She is very proactive and prompt . I am highly in awe of her skills and the way she handles queries and feedbacks is commendable! Whenever I called her she would respond and resolve our issues and queries swiftly. Her constant reassurance and motivation helped us to make our yoga and Face Yoga retreat a grand success. I'd like to thank Dr Kanda and the wanderers team for such wonderful service and the great experience that we had there. Magical Marwad Desert Camp Experience

Had a short 5 days trip to Manwar desert camp and Jodhpur on 25th December 2023...it was suggested to us by Ms Shraddha from Wanderers...Desert camp was an awesome experience...all the tents are well maintained and hv all the luxuries in them...staying overnight in tent amidst desert was different experience all together...the jeep safari and sunset camel ride is must...jodhpur city tour and bishnoi village tours were well arranged considering senior citizens travelling with us...Ranbanka palace in Jodhpur is also a beautiful place to stay...overall we had a lovely vacation....Thanks a lot Shraddha for making our trip a memorable one

Fantastic Trips !

Fantastic Trips ! I grew up in India and have lived in USA for over 50 years. I have been on 2 trips arranged by Shobita Louis so far and plan on many more. Last year was Kanyakumari and Southern India. I loved traveling by train and staying at the CGH hotels. It was exactly what I needed. This year my daughter and family were coming for the first time and Shobita Louis planned the perfect trip including Goa, Mumbai, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi. We had a vacation to remember for the rest of our lives and Shobita was available anytime we had a question or concern. The luxury and hospitality at all the hotels was amazing and the personal attention to detail she put into every part of the trip including the van and driver for the golden triangle route. The Wanderers have increased my wanderlust! Thank you Shobita!

Wandering with ....The Wanderers

This was the second time 'The Wanderers' organized our holiday. This time we traveled to Cambodia. They did an excellent job. The itinerary was very well planned and the scheduling was well organized. The team - especially Shradha was always there to help us out if we had any doubts or queries. All the arrangements and bookings were done in a timely and well organized manner. Even our food requirements were very well taken care off. We enjoyed our stay at Siem Reap and at Six Senses Krabey Island. We are definitely returning to Wanderers to plan our next vacation.

I got excellent service whenever I travelled with them. They followed my instruction even some time gave right advise regarding flight timing eg once I was travelling via Frankfurt they told me I should take a gap of certain time as immigration takes more times.even they choose perfect hotel in terms of both near public transport and as per economical condition. My trip to Slovenia with The Wanderers

I was in a group trip to Slovenia planned by The Wanderers. They did a fantastic job & unlike other travel agencies where you feel rushed & maybe even miss a tourist spot on this trip there was nothing of that sort. On the food front we had a taste of the local fare & also our own Indian meals all of which were planned to perfection. The rafting trip or the visit to the Lipica horse farm where we could eat on bales of hay, those are out of the box memories that only The Wanderers could provide. Fantastic.

We have been travelling abroad through The Wanderers since 2015 and we have gone to Egypt, Sri Lanka and Turkey... Amazing African Holiday

Thanks to Shraddha and the Wanderers team, had an amazing trip to Tanzania with our 6 year naturalist. Shraddha listened to our many specific needs and helped us plan a great itinerary to explore eastern Tanzania. Everything was handled very well. Our guide, Basili, was very well informed and helped us in getting some unforgettable sightings during the trip. He also ensured that we caught the Great Migration even if it meant driving in Serengiti non stop for 5 hours. Thanks to him, we were able to tick one item off our bucket list. Awesome wandering with Wanderers

We have used The Wanderers for several trips to India starting with a five month excursion 11 years ago to our recent tour of the Western Ghats. Sonal has been our guide and planner for all our trips and she is simply outstanding. We have not had any disappointments with any trip from routing to hotels to drivers. This trip was an anomaly since we asked Sonal for visits to hill stations in the south with minor sightseeing, several treks, ample time to relax and enjoy the less populated but natural swaths of the south. It was an odd request but Sonal put together a trip to fit our requests and we thoroughly enjoyed it. So thank you Sonal - you’re awesome as always!

Moscow or St. Petersburg – Which Russian City Is Better?

As two of the most popular tourist destinations in Russia, most travelers who visit the world’s largest countries end up making their way to both Moscow and St. Petersburg. Both cities have a wealth of attractions, including palaces, churches as well as exciting culinary and nightlife scenes. But what if you find yourself able to visit only one – should you visit Moscow or St. Petersburg? Alternatively, if you have time for both, in which city do you spend more days?

During a recent trip to Russia, I had a similar problem deciding. My trip allowed me to visit both cities but I was not sure in the beginning whether I should stay for more days in Moscow or St. Petersburg. As such, the comparison I am going to do here applies both to those trying to allocate the number of days between the two cities as well as those who have enough time to visit only one,

As Russia’s capital, the city serves as the financial center of the country. The city is highly cosmopolitan. You will find a large number of people from all around Russia here and even people from the former Soviet republics. Moscow also has a noticeable expat population and you’ll find various types of eateries here from Japanese to French as well as Italian – the latter which local chefs do very well.

While the city sits firmly in Europe and plenty of the surrounding architecture are certainly typical of the continent, Moscow can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming (and clogged), not to mention polluted due to the smoke coming out of the cars. There are plenty of highways circling the city to reach areas outside the central core. Moscow is definitely one of the great cities of the world.

• Moscow is one of the world’s largest cities and you won’t get bored here. There are plenty of districts from which to explore. Personally, I love the area surrounding the Patriarshy Ponds filled with plenty of charming shops and hip restaurants.
• If you decide to spend more time or devote your entire time in Russia to Moscow, you’ll be pleased that there are plenty of day trip and excursion opportunities from here. The towns around the golden ring, i.e. Suzdal, Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, etc are either a car or train ride away and can easily keep you preoccupied for a couple of days.
• The city is not as touristy as St. Petersburg and that’s a good thing. I visited the Kolomenskoye Park for example, which houses a UNESCO World Heritage Site, without encountering the tour groups I typically see in St. Petersburg.
• If the hipster culture interests you, you’ll be pleased that you have plenty of options in Moscow. The most prominent is Flacon , a short walk from Dmitrovskaya station.

• Overall, I found Moscow to be more expensive – both in terms of hotels, food as well as transport. The Russian capital is frequently ranked as one of the most expensive cities in the world. All it takes is a visit to the iconic GUM shopping mall to see the astronomical prices.
• If you are visiting Moscow independently, you might find getting by via public transport a bit confusing. When taking the metro in particular, the signs are all in Cyrillic so it’s helpful to learn a bit of the alphabet in order to familiarize yourself with the names of the places. If any consolation, some of the stations are among the most beautiful subway stations in the world.
• While both Moscow and St. Petersburg have less charming Soviet style buildings, you’ll find more in Moscow – being once the capital of the Soviet Union.
• There are no shortage of sights in Moscow but many of them are scattered all around the city. Interesting places in the outskirts include: Kolomenskoye Park, the Izmailovo Kremlin, Novodevichy Convent and Flaocon. But these are at different directions from the center.

Where I stayed in Moscow: I found the InterContinental Tverskaya Moscow to be conveniently located. It’s within a short walk from at least 3 metro stations while the Red Square is just down the road. Service overall is fantastic compared to other Moscow hotels and vacation rental options and there are good deals to be had during weekends. St. Petersburg

Established some 300 years ago by Peter the Great, St. Petersburg probably ranks among the most visually appealing cities in Europe. Almost any building in the central core for example can be considered as a tourist attraction. The city is one of the great touristic cities in Europe – hosting plenty of daytrippers from cruises around the Baltics or Scandinavia.

• The city is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with plenty of classical and baroque architecture. Peter the Great spared no expense in hiring the best architects from Western Europe when he established the city.
• St. Petersburg is relatively cheaper than Moscow. Uber rides between most points within the city center don’t go beyond $5.
• Many of the tourist attractions are concentrated within the center so it’s fairly easy to walk from one attraction to another or take a short cab ride.
• The city derives a good part of its income in tourism and you’ll find plenty of signs in English and even in other foreign languages. While I was there, I saw many restaurants and shops displaying signs in Chinese.

• While you will find daytrip opportunities in the form of Petrograd as well as Catherine Palace, they’re significantly less than if you choose to base yourself in Moscow.
• St. Petersburg can get quite touristy and you could find the crowds a bit maddening and you might even need to queue for a long time to enter. It’s possible to purchase tickets for some attractions online but others are available only on the spot.

Where I stayed in St. Petersburg: I was pleasantly surprised by the Crowne Plaza Ligovsky . Some of the rooms are styled like a palace with engravings on the walls. Fresh juices were served during breakfast – something relatively unheard of for a 4 star hotel. Best of all, it is located just across Galeria, one of the biggest shopping malls in St. Petersburg. Where to go if you could choose only one city?

Both Moscow and St. Petersburg are great in their own ways. However, if your stay in Russia is very short and barring any other limitations, I would suggest going to St. Petersburg instead. My reasons are as follows: St. Petersburg is quicker to navigate. You can finish most of the main attractions within a couple of days by focusing on the city center and perhaps visiting the area north of the river. In contrast, Moscow is quite spread out. The city is so much more than the Kremlin and Red Square that it will take you more days to really see the city. It would be better to visit Moscow next time when you have more days to spare.

If you have enough time for both cities, where should you allocate more days?

On the other hand, if you have more time to visit both cities and are deciding where to allocate more days – I would suggest allocating more days for Moscow. Other than the extra time required to see the city outskirts, you could also use the extra days to arrange excursions to the cities in the Golden Ring. Also check out my suggested one week itinerary for Russia . Alternatively, you can also consider venturing to Russia’s third capital, the multicultural city of Kazan if you have time.

Tips for Russia

• Know the Cyrillic alphabet  – the local alphabet is not difficult and is actually quite fun to learn especially after you learn how many words sound the same in both Russian and English! This will help greatly when you navigate metro stations and read shop signs.
• Travel insurance – If you are going for a simple eating trip near your home country, travel insurance may not be needed but for Russia which is quite far and rather exotic, I decided to purchase one. I bought from  this provider which has a higher than average medical coverage and compensates you for things like accidents and lost items at a relatively cheap price.
• Buy metro cards – Getting the metro cards in cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg will save you lots when it comes to transport cost and is far more convenient than buying tickets on the spot. For places that are not covered by the metro, you can consider ride-sharing apps like UBER.

I have been to moscow and lived there for a while i only find out that in moscow people are so aggressive and not friendly at all. If you don’t kniw the Russian language then it means you would be in problems. People don’t like to help others. if you can’t find any address don’t ask any one they will not answer you.time is money for them they don’t waist time for you.

I will plan to visit both but spend a bit more time in Moscow (if I can afford the hotels!!).
