TALLINN WEEKEND TRAVEL GUIDE

An unexpecting winter fairytale destination hidden in northern Europe is Tallinn, Estonia. Located right on the Baltic Sea, Estonia’s capital is known as one of Europe’s tech hubs, however, you could never guess that by looking at it. The walled, cobblestoned Old Town holds so much charm and beauty, that I fell in love almost instantly. Tallinn is one of the best winter city breaks in Europe and this travel guide includes everything you need for the perfect weekend.

Whether you’re an avid history buff, a food enthusiast seeking culinary delights, or simply an explorer in search of unique experiences, Estonia’s capital has something special in store for you. With picturesque medieval streets and cute cafes, it’s a winter destination you might not yet have on your radar, however, it’s quaintness captured my attention immediately. With affordable and easy flights direct into Tallinn, there’s no excuse not to discover Estonia’s capital in a weekend.

Let’s dive straight in to this weekend in Tallinn, Estonia travel guide!

the perfect weekend in tallinn estonia travel guide

where is TALLINN?

Estonia is a country bordered by Russia and Latvia in the northeast of Europe. Known as one of the three Baltic states along with Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia has the smallest population with only 1.3 million people. Tallinn sits right on the Baltic Sea and has a population of 450,000.

what is ESTONIA's currency?

Estonia is a part of the EU and uses the Euro!

HOW TO GET TO TALLINN?

AirBaltic runs frequent flights to Tallinn from a lot of major cities across Europe including Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Lisbon, London, and the list goes on. FinnAir and WizzAir also run direct flights from across Europe.

Alternatively, it’s very easy to get between the Baltic states by bus and from Riga, Latvia the journey is only 4 hours. Flixbus is the most popular bus company option in Europe and they run routes from neighbouring Latvia and Lithuania, along with countries further afield such as Poland. GetByBus and BusBud are two other sites to check out for bus options!

Getting from Helsinki, Finland is also very easy as there are direct ferries between the two cities that run throughout the day. The journey for this only takes 2 hours. To book the ferry check out DirectFerries for what times are available.

DAILY BUDGET

The Baltics are often labelled as a very affordable region in Europe, however after visiting all three of the Baltic States I would have to disagree. While Estonia is definitely cheaper than other, more touristy, parts of Europe, you can still expect to spend between €50 – €70 per day during your visit.

In saying that, Estonia is the cheapest out of the three Baltic states, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. So it ticks a lot of boxes for an affordable, unique getaway!

The great thing about Tallinn is there are plenty of free places to explore. The city is wonderful to walk around, which of course, is completely free. Along with free entry into some of the main attractions like Toompea Castle. Restaurant meals range between €15 – €25 per meal, while activities and entry fees are between free – €15.

where to stay

While Tallinn is more expensive than you would expect, there are some great accommodation options that won’t break the bank.  Firstly, a beautiful 4 star hotel that is incredibly reasonably priced, Hestia Hotel Barons Old Town . This hotel is right in the heart of everything in a renovated historic building. With a Booking.com Genuis discount, you can get rooms for as cheap as £65.

Alternatively, Oasis Studios are just as affordable and offer you a bit more space during your weekend in Tallinn. These studios include a kitchen and other private amenities, all while still being in the heart of the Old Town.

Finally, for some hostel options (for more hostel recommendations check out my blog with 150 hostels from around the world ) the two recommendations are The Munk’s Bunk and Old Town Munkenhof . Both of these hostels are greatly reviewed, with Munk’s Bunk being a bit more lively, with its own bar attached. Perfect if you’re looking to venture out and experience Tallinn’s highly raved about nightlife.

KOHTUOTSA VIEWING PLATFORM

kohtuotsa viewing platform

The Kohtuotsa viewing platform is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Tallinn for a great view over the Old Town. Here you get the best panoramic view over the red tiled roofs which, if you’re lucky, will be beautifully dusted with snow. This viewpoint is free and has a few benches to sit on and enjoy the view.

Even in the day Kohtuotsa never gets too busy, so you can get great photos when you’re there!

PATKULI VIEWING PLATFORM

PATKULI VIEWING PLATFORM

Located two minutes away from Kohtuotsa by walking is the Patkuli Viewing Platform. This lookout is situated in one of the most ancient parts of the Old Town, with great views over the city and its walls, all the way down to the port. You can access the platform by walking from Kohtuotsa or up the 157 steps from Toompark, which is a gorgeous city park right outside Tallinn’s Old Town.

ALEXANDER NEVSKY CATHEDRAL - tallinn travel guide

ALEXANDER NEVSKY CATHEDRAL

This spectacular onion domed Cathedral is located on Toompea Hill and can be seen from nearly every point across the Old Town. It’s Estonia’s main Russian Orthodox Cathedral and is by far the most opulent church in Tallinn. Built in 1900 the church was a symbol of the Tsarist Russian Empire’s religious and political dominance over the Baltic region. Nowadays the church is a stunning piece of architecture which is a must visit on your weekend in Tallinn. All roads in the Old Town seem to lead up to Toompea Hill so it’s easy to find and is also the perfect spot to sit and relax if the weather allows it.

The Cathedral is open 8 am – 7 pm daily and entry is free. However please note that photos are prohibited.

TORNIDE VÄLJAK (TOWER'S SQUARE)

TORNIDE VÄLJAK (TOWER'S SQUARE)

Tallinn is one of Europe’s best preserved Medieval fortifications, with nearly 2km of its original city walls surrounding the Old Town. Tower’s Square is located just outside the city walls, and here the park provides stunning close up views of the Watch Towers. This is a great spot for a walk and in the summer, picnics!

ST CATHERINE'S PASSAGE

Catherine’s Alley, formally known as Monk’s Alley, is a small street tucked away in Tallinn’s Old Town. The street was built more than 700 years ago and is lined with 15th-17th century buildings. The passage is lovely to stroll through and still retains a lot of its medieval charm. Now the street is home to eclectic shops and workshops, including ceramics, hats, glass and more.

TOWN HALL SQUARE

TOWN HALL SQUARE

In the heart of the Old Town lies Town Hall Square, the hub of the city. Here you can find a variety of different restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, currency exchanges, etc. During the winter months leading up to Christmas, the Square also hosts very charming Christmas markets that look incredible.

The multicoloured pastel buildings make it seem like you’re in a fairytale, especially with the dusting of snow covering the rooftops. If you do plan on eating in or around the Square, be wary of paying ‘tourist prices. The Old Town is small enough that you can easily wander for a few minutes and find something a little cheaper if you’re on a smaller budget.

walking tour

To discover a little more about Tallinn and its history, architecture and hidden gems, definitely join the daily afternoon walking tour. This highly reviewed walking tour is on every day at 3:15 pm, starting in the Town Hall Square. Check out where you can book here .

I always recommend joining a walking tour on any city break, as I think it gives a great base level knowledge about a new place, along with some local recommendations. It also shows some hidden gems you could have missed!

DANISH KING'S GARDEN TALLINN

DANISH KING'S GARDEN

The Danish King’s Garden holds a lot of stories and legends and is home to the three Faceless Monks. Ambrosiy the waiting monk, Claudius the watching monk and Bartholomeus the praying monk.  The old legend is that the Danish flag was born in Tallinn in the garden as it descended from the sky during the Danish invasion and helped King Valdemar II (the Danish King) win the battle. While this legend may not be factually correct, t he Danish King’s Garden is another great photo spot for your weekend trip.

The Garden is free to walk around and during the summer months they have outdoor tables and chairs for the restaurants in the Garden grounds.

TOOMPEA CASTLE

Toompea Castle was built in the 18th century atop the crumbling eastern wing of the 13th and 14th century fortress originally in its place. The Castle is exquisitely designed in a late Baroque façade and is free to explore. In addition to free entry, there are free guided tours that can be taken in Estonian, English and Russian.

The castle is now home to the Riigikogu (Estonia’s Parliament) and sessions of Parliament can be watched from the public gallery.

food recommendations

Tallinn is a great hub for delicious food, here are some places to check out during your time:

  • OA Coffee Shop – a great place to start the day with a quick bite before exploring. With delicious coffee and a variety of sweet treats, pastries and sandwiches, this is the perfect breakfast spot.
  • Surf Cafe – another great coffee spot a few minutes walk out of the Old Town. Not too many food options, but perfect for a takeaway coffee!
  • The Brick Coffee Roastery – one last coffee spot recommendation. Another great coffee joint for a sit in coffee or takeaway, with a few sweet treats to choose from
  • Chakra – an Indian restaurant with a variety of classic dishes.
  • Restaurant Odessa – a Ukrainian restaurant with traditional inspired foods including Vareniki (Ukrainian dumplings)
  • Restaurant Pegasus – a modern gastro restaurant with interesting dishes
  • Karu Talu Šokolaad – a family run vegan chocolate shop that sells a wide variety of chocolate flavours, definitely recommend trying a piece or two!

night out recommendations

Tallinn is a hub for nightlife and there are a lot of great bars to check out. To round off everything you need to know about this amazing city, here are some great bars and pubs to add to the Tallinn weekend travel guide.

  • The Babylon Bar – an intimate bar with a moody interior
  • Nümf – innovative cocktails with a unique menu, definitely an immersive experience.
  • Labor Bar – a science themed bar with fun decor and an extensive list of cocktails and shots
  • Koht – a local craft beer joint with reasonably priced pints

A weekend in Tallinn, Estonia

VISIT HUSKY PARK

The best day experience to do during your weekend in Tallinn is to visit a husky park. During my visit I joined a tour with Prangli Travel to visit a husky farm in Kōrvemaa, about 45 minutes away from Tallinn. I could not have asked for a better day. There had been a fresh snowfall the night before so the landscape was beautifully white and crisp while the sun was glistening down across the countryside.

The experience takes the majority of the day and you first get introduced to the plethora of huskies who live at the park, which was around 21 when I visited. During the winter months when there is high snowfall they also offer a tour that includes dog sledding through the countryside. Unfortunately when I visited the snow wasn’t thick enough to do this, however, the experience was still completely worth it. Instead of dogsledding I joined their cross-country hike tour. You’re allocated 1 – 2 dogs, depending on how comfortable you are with them as they are fairly strong, and walk through the gorgeous Estonian countryside. It is a great introduction to life outside the city and is one of the most unique experiences you can do from Tallinn.

The walk is around 4km through beautiful forests and wide open fields. With the fresh snow it’s one of the most picture perfect winter sights, making it an unmissable activity for your weekend in Tallinn. At the end of the tour enjoy some warm drinks and a light snack before heading back into the city. Arriving back to Tallinn around 4/5 pm.

ENJOY THE PERFECT WEEKEND

Tallinn is quite easily one of the best unsuspecting gems in Europe for a weekend away that is great for culture, food, scenery and just something a little different to the usual European getaways. It’s a great choice all year round, but especially perfect for those fairytale winter adventures you might be in search of.

To read about some more off the beaten path recommendations, here are five affordable and underrated European destinations you should check out.

The Weekndi lavanime taga on 32-aastane Kanada muusik Abel Tesfaye, kes nooruspõlves just kõige eeskujulikuma käitumisega silma ei paistnud.

The Weekend võitis oma esimese Grammy filmi „Beauty Behind the Madness“ helireaga just sel ajal, kui sai filmi „Fifty Shades of Grey“ jaoks kirjutatud loo „Earned It“ (2015) Oscari-nominatsiooni. „Ma arvan, et tähed kindlasti soosisid mind sel hetkel,“ ütles ta ajakirjandusele. „Kuigi me tegime selle nimel palju rasket tööd, tunnen lihtsalt, et olin õigel ajal õiges kohas.“

Filmimuusika edule järgnes edetabelite vallutamine looga „Can’t Feel My Face“ (2015). Ka järgnev album „Starboy“ (2016) tõi edetabelitesse hitisaju ning The Weeknd on praeguseks võlunud fänne oma veatu falseti, hingekriipivate laulusõnade ning hüpnotiseerivate biitidega. „Save Your Tears“ (koos Ariana Grandega), „Blinding Lights“, „Wicked Games“, „Out of Time“ on vaid mõned neist lugudest, mis on The Weekndist teinud ühe enim auhindadele nomineeritud artisti – sel aastal sai ta lausa 17 nominatsiooni Billboard Music Awardsil.

Full Itinerary To Spend An Epic Weekend In Tallinn

Spending a weekend in Tallinn is probably one of the most magical things you can do! This quaint historical town is for sure one of the oldest and prettiest destinations in Europe.

The city is perfectly suited for weekend breaks so if you’re traveling through Europe, stopping in Tallinn is a real must! I’ve visited Tallinn myself during summer and I can tell you that the old city is incredibly charming.

However, summer tends to be a busy period to visit so you might want to consider visiting late spring or early fall. Of course, Tallinn covered in snow is even more enchanting!

In this post, I’ll show you the highlights of Tallinn combined in a weekend itinerary that you can use on your next trip. This itinerary covers the old town as well as the more contemporary attractions and just here below you’ll find a map with all of the places I talk about in this post so you can find them back easily!

So what are you waiting for?

Let’s dive into this weekend itinerary for Tallinn!

Tallinn Itinerary

One day in Tallinn

If you only have one day in Tallinn, these are the highlights you should have seen! If you don’t have a lot of time, I suggest staying in the old city center. However, if you do have more time, a weekend, for example, you’d be surprised what can be found outside the historical center!

First, let’s start with the old town for now.

Town Hall Square

town hall - weekend Tallinn

At the center of Tallinn, you can find the town hall square. This is a great spot to begin your visit to the city!

Definitely take your time to admire the impressive town hall with all its details. The building dates back to the 13th century and is still in use today! If you find the time, consider visiting the inside of the town hall. This is possible in July and August for tourists.

The town hall square also is a very good spot to find food and drinks. Tired of walking? Order yourself a drink on one of the many terraces! But, be aware of tourist traps! The prices on the square might be a bit inflated and for the real authentic restaurants and bars, you’ll need to look a bit further into the city.

Alexander Nevski Cathedral

Alexander Nevski Cathedral Tallinn

One of the most impressive buildings in Tallinn is without doubt the Alexander Nevski Cathedral. This Russian orthodox church is not only a very pretty sight on the outside but also quite spectacular on the inside.

If you come at the right time you might be able to stay for a Mass and experience the Orthodox religion. I can say this is a very special experience. In any case, definitely take the time to sit down and look at all the beautiful details inside this church!

Old city walls

city wall Tallinn

When walking around Tallinn you’ll notice a lot of ancient elements that remind us of the rich history of this city. One of these elements is the old city wall that is still standing for a large part including its towers!

It’s possible to walk on the city wall and enjoy a lovely view over the rest of the city. You can also visit some of the towers for a small entrance fee or the little flower garden with a bit of historical explanation as featured in this picture.

Probably the most special attraction of the whole city is the KGB museum .

A few decades ago, when Estonia was still part of the Soviet Union, there was a hotel called Viru where foreigners could stay when visiting Tallinn. However, the national security body of the Soviet Union monitored the foreigners closely. From the secret top floor of the hotel, they spied on unsuspecting victims, with espionage devices installed in many rooms.

They did this until the end of the Soviet Union in 1991 and had to leave the hotel in a hurry. Right now, it’s a museum, and you can visit it!

You can experience how this surreal story comes to live when visiting the rooms they used to occupy!

Patkuli viewing platform

View from the Patkuli platform

You’ll likely have already seen the iconic photos of Tallinn with a view of the city. Well, chances are high that they were taken from this viewing platform!

You’ll find this platform in the higher-located old city center, so it involves some climbing, but the view is definitely worth it!

Besides this platform, you’ll also find a couple of other platforms in the old center. These are called the Piiskopi viewing platform and the Kohtuotsa viewing platform. On your weekend trip, it’s a must to visit at least one of them!

St Mary’s Cathedral

This cute church at the heart of the old city center definitely deserves a stop on your visit to Tallinn!

Its history dates back to the 13th century and this becomes immediately clear when you step inside. For a small entrance fee, you’ll get to admire ancient wooden craftwork and beautiful religious decoration. It’s even possible to climb the tower and enjoy an amazing view over the city!

St Olaf’s Church

St Olaf's church

I know, a lot of churches right?

Unfortunately, I can’t help it that Tallinn’s oldest buildings just happen to be churches! This church dates back to the 12th century and is the largest medieval building in the city!

Did you know that until 2007, no buildings could be built in Tallinn higher than this one? That’s exactly how important this monument is.

It’s also possible to climb the tower and enjoy a wonderful view of the city from above. In any case, take your time to admire the 19th century Gothic interior of this beautiful site!

Two days in Tallinn

If you have more than one day, two days or more, to explore the city, I’d suggest adding these activities to your bucket list! Rather than doing everything very quickly, it might be worth it to explore the city a bit slower and take a deep dive into its history!

While day one included many activities in the historical town, day two of this weekend itinerary will show you more of the contemporary side of Tallinn.

Seaplane Harbour museum

Seaplane Harbour Museum Tallinn

A bit outside the city center of Tallinn, you’ll find the Seaplane Harbour museum. This maritime museum is dedicated to everything sea-related that has to do with the history of Estonia. You’ll find here real water planes, a submarine from the 1930s, and other old (but real!) water-related devices.

The museum is very suited for the whole family, there are interactive parts for children and there is a cafeteria in case you want to eat or drink something afterward!

If you’re planning to visit, definitely calculate a few hours for this!

Balti jaama turg – local market

Do you want a more local experience and do you want to get out of the historical city center? Then consider visiting the Balti Jaama Turg, a modern marketplace where you’ll find all sorts of delicacies!

This is the perfect place to visit if you’re cooking for yourself on your trip and still need some fresh ingredients or want a delicious Estonian takeaway meal!

Although this is not the typical tourist activity, it gives a better image of how Tallinn as a city is evolving right now.

Telliskivi & Kalamaja neighbourhood

Kalamaja neighbourhood - the artsy neighbourhood of Tallinn

This old neighborhood has been transformed in recent years to the hippest district of Tallinn! While Kalamaja is known for its old wooden fishing houses, Telliskivi is known for its sparkling cultural activities!

Here, you’ll find trendy fashion stores, amazing street art, and the artsy atmosphere you could expect from a hip district in any huge city.

What you should definitely do is visit Telliskivi Creative City, have ice cream, admire the street art, shop in local boutiques, and after that, walk your way up to the waterside, while encountering the wooden houses I talked about, where the Seaplane Harbour Museum is located as well. I promise that it won’t disappoint you!

It’s time to plan your weekend city break to Tallinn!

I hoped I convinced you to plan your next city trip to Tallinn and gave you some useful tips and tricks on things to do on your visit in this Tallinn itinerary!

Did you know that visiting Tallinn is a perfect combo with a visit to Helsinki ? You just take the ferry to the other side of the sea!

Please let me know in the comments whether you liked Tallinn or any other suggestions you might have for the readers of this post!

Toompea Viewing platform -a weekend in Tallinn

The picturesque Estonian capital is as compact as it is quaint, which makes it an ideal destination for an enthralling weekend break. The medieval Old Town is bursting with charm while the burgeoning food scene means that every meal you enjoy will be one to remember! A weekend in Tallinn works really well as you can explore the cultural and architectural wonders, get a taster of the nightlife, relax in cafés and parks and feel as though you have seen much of the city, while still feeling like you have more to explore upon your return.

Tallinn is a city whose atmosphere and enchantment changes throughout the year, with Christmas markets in winter and open-air museums in summer making for a completely different vibe. It’s therefore worth visiting this Eastern European city time and time again to experience the capital’s charm in different lights.

Read on to discover the top sights to see during a weekend in Tallinn so that you can relax and enjoy your break.

How to spend 2 days in Tallinn, a weekend itinerary

Tallinn Estonia - How to spend a weekend

Tallinn itinerary: Day 1

How to get to and from the airport of tallinn.

Flights arrive into Tallinn from all over Europe on a Friday evening so hopefully you’ll be able to catch a short flight to your destination in time for dinner or drinks on your first night. This allows you to get a glimpse of Estonian hospitality (which you’ll be enjoying much more of over the weekend) and settle in to your accommodation before starting your weekend of exploration.

There are a few options to get from Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport into the city centre and which you choose will depend on your time frame, budget and group size. Public transport is, of course, the cheapest option and as it’s fairly easily done this is the option most people go for.

Tallinn Estonia

Bus: You can get into the centre of Tallinn by taking the No.2 bus from the airport which runs every 20 minutes between 6.30am and midnight. The bus leaves from the lowest level of the airport (down from arrivals) and you’ll be able to pay the driver in cash (approx. 2). You’ll want to listen out for the stop Laikmaa as this is the most central bus stop. It’s worth working out where your hotel is in relation to this stop so that you have the walking map saved for your arrival.

Tram: An alternative public transport option from the airport to Tallinn city centre is the tram. This runs for slightly longer than the bus (5.45am until 12.45am) so could be a good choice if you arrive particularly early or late. You’ll want to take the tram in the direction of the city and get off at stop Viru. Again, tickets cost 2 and can be purchased from the driver or you can buy a QR-ticket on the Internet (1€)

Taxi: If you’d rather not use public transport and just want to arrive directly at your hotel, you might just want to grab a taxi. These generally cost around 10 Euros so it hardly breaks the bank and is a great option if there are a group of you travelling together.

The airport lies just 4km out of the city centre so you can be in and exploring in no time! If you opt for public transport and walk to your hotel, you’re likely to be able to take in some of the city’s Old-Town-charm right from the get-go!

As you’ll probably be arriving fairly late on the Friday, you’ll just want to grab some Estonian grub like borscht soup or a couple of excellent Eastern European beers and call it a night. Põrgu, meaning Hell in Estonian, is a fantastic place to drink and dine on local favourites.

weekend tour tallinn

Tallinn itinerary: Day 2

As you’re only in Tallinn for 2 days, you’ll want to make the most of your time by being up and out exploring the city in the morning. Thankfully, most of the top sights are located within walking distance of each other so you can wander around Old Town, perusing the architecture at your leisure.

Toompea Castle and Hill

Toompea viewing platform - Tallinn

Toompea Castle and the surrounding hillside is an area which houses The Parliament of Estonia (Riigikogu) and the famous Toompea Post Office. These are fabulous buildings and the view from the top of the 170-foot limestone plateau across the city is spectacular.

Toompea Viewing platform - 2 days in Tallinn

The hill was home to a fortress built in the 13th and 14th centuries which later crumbled and became the location for the current Baroque castle which was built in the mid-to-late 18th century. This area is steeped in history, with various leaders having ruled over the city and country from this spot. Travellers can book a free excursion of the castle from Monday to Friday if booked ahead of time.

Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin

Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin - a weekend in Tallinn

Another impressive city sight is the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin which stands on Toompea Hill. The Cathedral is thought to have been built between the 13th and 14th centuries and has been touched up and rebuilt many times ever since. The Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church is a work of varied architectural styles, with its famous Baroque tower being a late addition in the 1770s.

Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin - 2 days in Tallinn Estonia

Inside, the Cathedral is home to grand coats of arms and burial stones of Estonia’s German nobility. The church is the oldest in Estonia and was, in fact, the only building to survive a mammoth fire on Toompea Hill in the 17th century! Visitors can explore the inside of the church for a small donation and can even climb the 69-metre bell tower.

Tallinn Town Hall Square

Tallinn Town Hall Square - 2 days in Tallinn

Tallinn Town Hall Square is home to a number of stunning buildings which are a photographer’s dream thanks to the colourful facades, elegant spires and wrought-iron detailing making them unmissable. The town hall square has been a focal point of Old Town for many centuries and today features regular markets, concerts and festivals. The Town Hall Square also boasts an annual Christmas tree display that has been held in the square since 1441!

Tallinn Town Hall

Tallinn Town Hall - a weekend break in Tallinn

Tallinn Town Hall which stands on the south side of the square is the oldest town hall in the whole of Scandinavia and the Baltic Region and is one of the most famous buildings in the city. Located on the very top of the Town Hall tower is the Vana Toomas , a weather vane named Old Thomas. Old Thomas has become a bit of a symbol of the city as he stands proudly atop the tower with his sword and armour.

Tallinn Town Hall Pharmacy

Tallinn Town Hall Pharmacy

Another one of Europe’s oldest is the Tallinn Town Hall Pharmacy, one of the oldest continuously-running pharmacies in the whole of Europe. Housed at number 11 in the Town Hall Square, the Tallinn Town Hall Pharmacy is a quaint, white building with medieval signage that is thought to have been operating as a pharmacy since around 1415! The Burchart family ran the pharmaceutical business from 1582 to 1911, a pretty impressive feat for one family!

You can spend the morning wandering these sights, or if you’d rather a more structured or in-depth tour of Tallinn’s medieval Old Town, you can take a guided walking tour to witness and hear about the city’s most famous and important sites.

Go for coffee and cake at Tallinn’s oldest cafe Maiasmokk

weekend tour tallinn

Once you’ve explored the highlights of Old Town, it’ll be high time for a coffee and cake at Tallinn’s oldest café, Maiasmokk. This cute café offers an incredible array of tasty treats that will have you licking your lips the second you walk in the door! If you’ve taken your time during your morning of exploration and it’s a little later, you might want to grab a spot of lunch and they do some delicious savoury options too.

Depending on the weather, you might want to spend your first afternoon walking along sections of the old Town Wall. These ancient fortifications have been preserved, and in some places restored, to allow you to climb the towers and walk the walls as armies would have done in days gone by. The preserved sections include 1.85 km of the wall, 26 defence towers, two full gates and fragments of two front gates. There are various spots around the city where you can ascend the town walls which give you a beautiful view of the city landscape.

Kadriorg Park and Art Museum

Kadriorg Park and Art Museum - a weekend in Tallinn

If the weather is fine, you might want to head over to the Kadriorg Park and Art Museum as you can roam the halls of the gallery before taking a stroll in the park grounds. Both the museum building and the grounds are stunning in themselves so Kadriorg is well worth a visit, and it’s a beautiful place to see in the sun.

Kadriorg Park and Art Museum - a weekend in Tallinn Estonia

The Kadriord Art Gallery is housed in a Baroque palace that was a gift from the tsar Peter the First to his wife, Catherine. Inside, the building itself is a work of art with ceiling murals, sculptures and intricate detailing throughout. The collections include pieces from Estonian artists as well as many other European painters and features regular changing exhibitions.

After this, travel back over to Old Town to spend the rest of your day enjoying the sites that you missed yesterday.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral - a weekend in Tallinn

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the most breath-taking buildings in the city of Tallinn, built with a domed Russian Revival style. The orthodox cathedral is relatively new by Tallinn standards, being built between 1884 and 1900. At this time, the country was ruled by the Russian Empire and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral therefore stands as a strong reminder of this period.

Danish King’s Garden

Another of Tallinn’s sites with foreign influence is the Danish King’s Garden close to Toompea. St Olaf’s Church

St Olaf's Church - a weekend in Tallinn

St Olaf’s Church in Tallinn is a grand, medieval structure that has been through its fair share of historical strife in the way of lightning strikes and fires! The tower of St Olaf’s Church is thought to have been struck by lightning over 10 times, three of which caused extensive fires and damage. Visitors can now climb to the top of the tower for an astounding view of the city.

How to spend a weekend in Tallinn, Estonia

An impeccably preserved medieval capital, unspoilt wildernesses, cutting-edge galleries and a thriving sauna culture make the Baltic nation an alluring European escape.

In many ways, Estonia can be a little hard to pin down. There are clear cultural parallels with its Nordic neighbour, Finland, across the water, but a centuries-long relationship with Russia — including the former Soviet Union — mean things are a little more complicated. Ever focused on the future, this nation in northeast Europe has carved its own niche and offers something entirely unique for a short-haul escape. What to expect? The secret of Tallinn’s Old Town — all cobbled lanes, slender-steepled churches and medieval architecture — has long been out, but the Estonian capital is also a modern and progressive city, too, and a   burgeoning hub of creativity and technology. The cuisine will also catch first-time visitors by surprise, with dishes drawing heavily on the excellence of the produce coming from Estonia’s remarkable larder. The country has no shortage of space for producers, either — head out of Tallinn and you’ll quickly see just how sparsely populated a nation this is. Without people, animals have moved in to fill the wild, wooded wilderness, and a trip to one of Estonia’s national parks can include meetings with bears, elk and wolves. Throw in beautiful baroque mansions, excellent beer and an established sauna culture, and there’s suddenly far more here than you can possibly squeeze into one weekend.

City and sea

Morning There’s no denying the beauty of Tallinn’s labyrinthine Old Town. Magnificently preserved, its medieval Hanseatic architecture attracts visitors from around the world. A group tour will ensure you don’t miss any of the highlights, but if you’re going solo, Raekoja plats (a square beside Tallinn Town Hall) will help you get your bearings. The buildings framing the square are endlessly photogenic — none more so than the mighty, gothic town hall itself — but look out for the Raeapteek, a pharmacy that’s been in use since the 1400s and said to be Europe’s oldest. Follow your nose around the cobbled streets and lanes, and head up Toompea Hill to admire the Estonian parliament buildings, the palatial Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and sensational city views. Afternoon With historic Tallinn in the bag, it’s time to look to the city’s more futuristic side, at Telliskivi Creative City. This former wreck of an area is now home to dozens of creative start-ups. An easy walk from the Old Town, much of the architecture is industrial on the outside but with inventive gems to discover within. Fotografiska is unmissable: part museum, part gallery, it’s home to permanent and temporary photography exhibitions, not to mention an excellent restaurant. Opposite, La Muu is an incredibly popular local ice cream shop. Around the corner, you’ll find a coffee shop, a brewery and the Junimperium Distillery — a producer of artisan gins — sitting side by side, with the Vintage Beauty OÜ furniture shop opposite. Evening Head towards the seafront, where you’ll find Põhjala Brewery & Tap Room. Set inside a cavernous facility that also houses its own restaurant and sauna, it has 24 house-brewed beers on tap. The surrounding Kalamaja district is also undergoing massive regeneration, with Noblessner Port unrecognisable from its days as the main submarine shipyard of Imperial Russia. Instead of belching chimneys, you’ll now find excellent restaurants and bars, as well as the Proto Invention Factory, a sort of theme park for virtual reality and prototype technology set in a former warehouse. From here, head to the new Iglupark and its black-wood saunas. Watch the sunset, then round off a spell in the steam rooms with a plunge into the icy Baltic Sea.

Sailing boats at Noblessner Port.

Stately Homes and Spas

Morning Fifty miles east of Tallinn, located within Lahemaa National Park, Palmse Manor is one of several grand, baroque estates dotted around the country. It’s existed in one form or another since the early 16th century; the current incarnation dates from 1785. Its gorgeously symmetrical exterior wouldn’t look out of place in a Wes Anderson film. Take a tour of the sumptuous grounds and house and, if you’re not driving, finish off with a tasting of wine and various Estonian spirits. Heading south, it’s a two-hour drive to the coastal city of Pärnu, so break the journey up with lunch at Põhjaka Manor, near the town of Paide. Dedicated to seasonal, local produce, the menus depend on what’s arrived from the restaurant’s suppliers that morning.

Afternoon Soomaa National Park is an expanse of rivers and forests, and perhaps the best place in the country to watch the river banks burst and fields flood, creating new waterways. The park is also home to huge areas of peat bog, and if that doesn’t sound appealing, a guided tour with charismatic guide Aivar Ruukel may well change your mind. Aivar offers walks out across the bogs to help visitors understand this remarkable ecosystem. Ungainly snowshoes are used to stop you sinking, but if you don’t fancy that, there’s also a series of wooden walkways, too. Growing at just 1mm a year, the sphagnum moss captures huge amounts of carbon, making it a vital part of the landscape. Yet these tours aren’t dry, biology lectures — they also offer the chance to go wild swimming and try wild berries along the way.

Evening In late summer, Pärnu Beach throngs with domestic tourists, drawn here by its golden sands and the rows of colourful, historic houses behind it. The city’s other major draw is its excellent spas. Hedon Spa & Hotel is perhaps the town’s grandest, offering a wide selection of different treatments, including silent spas and even a night spa. Don’t miss the on-site Restaurant Raimond, which offers fine dining tasting menus featuring the likes of caviar, venison, and Jerusalem artichoke ice cream. Although, if you fancy one more mansion for the day, you could always eat instead at the lavish, art nouveau Villa Ammende, a 10-minute walk northwest. The à la carte options include roast beef heart with garlic, pickled apple, dried onion and salty blackcurrant, and roast chicken broth.

Three Soviet relics to discover

1. Hara Harbour The former Russian submarine base at Hara sits on the northern coast and has become a strangely serene site for watersports. It’s not always been this way, however — built in the 1950s, the now-forlorn structure still has plenty for history buffs to marvel at, including Soviet artwork, photographs from the era and no shortage of stories from locals who lived under the regime.

2. Hotel Viru &   KGB Museum Given its astonishing history, the very fact that Tallin’s towering Hotel Viru is still a working hotel is one of its most surprising features. At the height of the Cold War, the KGB spied on guests, whose rooms were riddled with surveillance equipment. Today the 23rd floor has been dedicated as a museum to the city’s paranoid period of history.

3. Soviet Statue Graveyard Statues — many created between 1945 and 1990 by Estonian artists — salvaged from squares, plinths and buildings in Tallinn have now been amassed in a plot behind Maarjamäe Palace, part of the Estonian History Museum. It’s an eery feeling to wander among oversized icons of the Soviet area, including Stalin and Lenin. The scowling, ground-level, head of the latter is particularly unsettling.

Five restaurants to visit in Tallinn

1. Lee Founded by a chef, Janno Lepik, and a sommelier, Kristjan Peäske, Lee goes big on dishes like Estonian venison and locally caught trout. Can’t make up your mind what to order? Opt for the Lee Experience: a number of culinary highlights from the sophisticated menu. leeresto.ee

2. Ülo A short walk from Telliskivi, Ülo has a menu that wouldn’t look out of place in a San Francisco restaurant, offering up the likes of beef-cheek tacos, and tiger prawns with grilled pineapple. Over half its dishes are vegan, too. facebook.com/ulorestoran

3. Lore Bistro   Down by the Noblessner docks, the Lore Bistro is a fine place to dine if you’ve visiting the nearby Proto Invention Factory or Estonian Maritime Museum. Expect inventive, seasonal dishes made almost exclusively with Estonian produce. lorebistroo.ee

4. Rataskaevu 16 At this popular little spot in the Old Town, most of the dishes are made from produce sourced from Estonia, whether that’s the duck fillets, Baltic herring or the show-stopping elk roast. rataskaevu16.ee

5. Pegasus Pegasus has been an Old Town fixture since the early 1960s, but with the modern decor and slick presentation of local dishes, it can’t be accused of not moving with the times. restoranpegasus.ee

How to spend a perfect weekend in Tallinn?

Booking.com Search FlightsImage

If you have more time available then after the 3-day itinerary you will find plenty of suggestions to extend your stay in Tallinn, Estonia or the Baltics.

Withour further ado, let’s explore the possibilities of a perfect weekend in Tallinn with the itinerary below.

Contents of this article Hide

Day 1 – old town and toompea castle hill, day 2 – road trip to jägala waterfalls and kadriorg park, day 3 – rottermanni quarter | kalamaja & telliskivi, more ideas to extend your weekend in tallinn, best things to do during your weekend in tallinn, best things to do around tallinn, where to stay during your weekend in tallinn, best bars and restaurants in tallinn, how to get to your weekend in tallinn, how to get around in tallinn, final thoughts, perfect itinerary for a long weekend in tallinn.

Below you can find a suggested itinerary for your weekend in Tallinn. After the itinerary you will find more details on the best things to do in the city, but also a little further afield. But also find my suggestions on where to eat and where to sleep.

Today you arrive for your weekend in Tallinn and check-in to your hotel. Tallinn’s hotels are quite affordable so book a hotel like Hilton Tallinn Park with the benefit of a sauna and spa complex.

Drop off your bags if your room isn’t ready yet and head to the Viru Gate. Spend the rest of the morning exploring the Old Town

When it’s time for lunch head to restaurant Rataskaevu 16 , or its sister restaurant Väike on Niguliste 6. After lunch continue your exploration of the Old Town’s cobblestone streets. Eventually you’ll inevitably wind up on Town Hall square.

From Town Hall square head up to Toompea Castle Hill for your fix of medieval times. Visit the restored cannon tower of Kiek in de Köki and also don’t miss the Alexander Nevski Cathedral and the Patkuli viewing platform.

Go back down to the Old Town square and if you’re visiting in winter grab a cup of mulled wine from one of the vendors at the Christmas market. Take a seat on the square for a drink inside or outside in any other season.

Afterwards, head to restaurant Olde Hanse for a real Estonian dinner. Before heading back to your hotel visit the Sigmund Freud Bar for some cool cocktails.

This morning you’re going to the Jägala waterfalls, which is a highlight of any visit to Tallinn and Estonia. So get up early and go on a tour, rent a car, or grab one of the  CityBee  car shares.

What’s great about visiting the Estonian countryside is that it’s very close to the centre of Tallinn. It only takes about 30 minutes to reach the Jägala waterfalls.

On the way back to the city stop at the KUMU art museum. Have lunch at the museum’s cafe and then explore all that the museum has to offer.

After your museum visit walk to the baroque Kadriorg Palace. If it’s your thing visit the palace’s museum or instead go for a walk in the gardens and the surrounding area.

With a bit of luck you can view the change of the guards at the pink coloured President’s Office next door around 5pm.

Tonight my suggestion is to have dinner at Lee Restoran  on the northern side of the Old Town.

After dinner head back to your hotel, or better yet, first go to the best cocktail bar in town, speakeasy Whisper Sister .

After two long days, take it easy this morning. Have breakfast and relax at the hotel’s sauna. Afterwards, walk to the Rotermanni quarter for a coffee and some freshly baked goods at  Røst Bakery .

In the afternoon walk or take the tram to Kalamaja and Telliskivi. This hipsterish area is full of little shops, bars, restaurants, graffiti, art installations, a gin distiller and a brewery.

And don’t forget to visit the Estonian branch of the Swedish Fotografiska  photo gallery!

This is the end of your weekend in Tallinn. But, keep on reading if you have more time. Or scroll down for more details on all of the best things to to in Tallinn and more.

If you have more time in Tallinn than just a weekend, you’re lucky, because there’s plenty to keep you busy.

On day 4 go on a day trip to gorgeous Laheema National Park. And continue with a visit to the city of Tartu on day 5.

If you have a week of free time, spend day 6 and 7 in Helsinki , Finland. To get there you can easily take the 2-hour ferry across the Gulf of Finland.

Alternatively, travel onwards via Parnu to Riga, Latvia’s capital. When you have even more time embark on a 3-country tour of the Baltic states that finishes in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Get lost in the Old Town

Start your weekend in Tallin in the Old Town .

The moment you step through the Viru Gate, you have arrived in Tallinn’s 13th-century UNESCO heritage-listed Old Town. The Old Town maintains its medieval and Hanseatic roots with exceptional preservation.

Take some leisurely strolls along its labyrinthine streets – losing yourself in its charm is a delightful inevitability. Although, truly getting lost is quite a challenge, because the Old Town resides within historic city walls. However, walking around aimlessly is still very appealing.

Town Hall square (Raekoja plats)

Wandering around the Old Town you will at least once end up at Raekoja Plats , the Old Town Hall square. The Town Hall here is one of the oldest buildings on the square dating back to the 13th century. Can you spot the dragons sticking their heads out of the building?

Throughout the year the square hosts markets, concerts and other events. When you visit at the end of November your weekend in Tallinn is extra special, because a beautifully decorated Christmas tree is erected on the centre of the square.

Around the tree you will then find one of the cutest Christmas markets in Europe. Here they sell warm hats and gloves with nordic patterns, dried sausages and many other local products.

Climb up Toompea Hill

Toompea Hill is part of Tallinn’s Old Town, but you have to climb up quite a bit to get there. The Castle at Toompea Hill has played a major part in Estonia’s history. The castle was originally referred to as the Castle of the Danes, but later changed hands to various other orders. Today the castle and some annexes are the seat of the Estonian government.

Next to the castle visit  Kiek in de Kök  that has 4 metres thick walls. Back in the day this tower was the artillery tower. The tower is connected to three other defence towers and underground passages as part of Tallinn’s fortifications.

Another Tower you can visit is  Tall Hermann  on top of which the Estonian flag is ceremonially raised every single day.

Alexander Nevski cathedral

Architecturally quite different than any of the other buildings on Toompea hill is the Russian orthodox Alexander Nevski cathedral . Today, but also back in the 19th century when the tower was built the cathedral was already quite controversial. The people perceived the tower as a symbol of Estonia’s Russification. Luckily, plans to demolish the cathedral were never carried out, because nowadays the cathedral is a highlight on your visit to Tallinn.

Viewing platforms of Toompea Hill

Continue your weekend in Tallinn on Toompea hill by visiting a few viewing platforms. My favourite has to be the Patkuli viewing platform with views of the Old Town and the sea in the distance.

Another one is the Kohtuotsa viewing platform, with some seagull regulars visiting here as well.

Finally on the western side of Toompea is the Piiskopi viewing platform looking out onto the train station, Kalamaja and Telliskivi.

Telliskivi Creative City

Telliskivi is the hip and happening area within the Kalamaja neighbourhood of Tallinn. Your weekend in Tallinn isn’t complete if you haven’t visited this neighbourhood, because it’s so different from other parts of Tallinn.

Whether it’s shopping, eating, drinking, or checking out the graffiti and light art installations, or visiting the Fotografiska, you can find all of that in Telliskivi.

Telliskivi lights up at night, so I would recommend trying to visit when it’s dark (which can already be at 3.30pm in winter). Most of the shops here are open till 7pm and the Fotografiska most nights even till 8pm.

Special mentions must go out to the Junimperium gin distillery for a classic G&T, or some other gin cocktail. Another special mention for the best chocolates in town at Chocokoo . You can buy Chocokoo’s larger chocolate bars at a few shops elsewhere in the city, but you can get the handmade bonbons only here in Telliskivi.

Admire the photography at Fotografiska

If you’ve been to Stockholm I hope you didn’t miss the Fotografiska , an authority when it comes to world-class photography. Fotografiska is branching out and their first opening after Stockholm was the Tallinn branch in 2019. That means you’re in luck when spending a weekend in Tallinn.

The exhibitions here are never static, since nothing on display is permanently there. So far the institution has represented over 200 different artists.

If you’re feeling hungry you can comfortably sit down in the Michelin guide listed on-site restaurant. The museum shop is a good resource to shop for some original souvenirs. Fotografiska is open till 8pm on most nights.

Visit Kadriorg Park

Just outside of Tallinn’s city centre you will find the Kadriorg neighbourhood . Kadriorg is home to large green areas, the KUMU museum, the Kadriorg Palace and the Presidential Palace. You can also check out the colourful wooden houses that are very typical for the Baltics.

Kadriorg Palace & Art Museum

The 18th century baroque Kadriorg Palace was erected by Tsar Peter the Great. Inside the palace you can visit the Kadriorg Art Museum which is the only Estonian museum dedicated to early European and Russian art.

Presidential Palace

Next to the Kadriorg palace is the Presidential Palace in beautiful pink. You cannot visit this palace on the inside because it actually is still in use. Around 5.15pm you can witness the change of the honour guards in front of the palace.

KUMU Museum

Where the Kadriorg Art Museum focuses on early European and Russian art, the KUMU focuses on the various stages of Estonian art. From Soviet times to modernism and contemporary art.

There are permanent, as well as changing exhibitions on display. The modern architecture is very interesting in itself and is quite the contrast compared to its surroundings.

Just like the Kadriorg Art Museum housed in the Kadriorg Palace, the KUMU is part of the Eesti Kunstimuuseum . In total there are 5 branches. You can visit them separately or buy a combined ticket to save a few euros.

The cafe inside the museum is excellent for an affordable and delicious lunch. Good options for coffee and cake too.

There’s plenty to keep you busy for a weekend in Tallinn itself, but if you have some extra time I highly recommend to visit something outside of the city. Check out the below suggestions.

Drive to the Jägala waterfalls

The Jägala waterfalls is situated only a 20-30 minute drive from Tallinn. In the warmer months of the year the waterfall can grow up to 50 metres wide. In the colder months Jägala waterfalls is a lot smaller and could potentially even be completely frozen. This winter event makes the waterfall a unique and very cool trip if you want to escape the city.

You can easily visit Jägala waterfalls on its own, or as a stopover if you’re doing a daytrip to Laheema National Park . When you don’t have your own wheels I recommend this  Laheema National Park Day Trip that includes Jägala waterfalls. When you prefer to go independently consider taking one of the CityBee share cars you’ll find all across the city.

Laheema National Park

Laheema National Park is probably the most popular day trip from Tallinn. It’s an easy 45-60 minute drive to get there from the centre of Tallinn. The National Park features forest, bogs and wildlife. And there are many easy enough trails to follow.

Leave Tallinn early to make the most of your day in the park. On the way to Laheema National Park, or on the way back to Tallinn you can stop at the Jägala waterfall , which is just off the road between the park and Tallinn.

If you don’t have your own car I recommend this  Laheema National Park Day Trip that includes a stop at Jägala waterfall. If you prefer to go indepedently consider taking a CityBee share car that you can find scattered all around the city.

Ferry across the Gulf of Finland to Helsinki

Tallink is the ferry operator between Tallinn and Helsinki. If you take the first ferry to Helsinki and the last ferry of the day back to Tallinn you have the perfect day trip. However, you could easily spend 2 days in Helsinki. So if you have time stay overnight and return to Tallinn the next day.

Some top things to do in Helsinki are a visit to Helsinki cathedral, the Temppeliaukion church, the new Helsinki Central Library Oodi and the Amos Rex museum.

Check out my article on Helsinki to plan your Helsinki getaway.

Tallinn is a very affordable city, especially when compared to most other European capital cities. The city is also very walkable and therefore I would suggest to stay in a more comfortable hotel just outside of the Old Town.

Hilton Tallinn Park

The Hilton Tallinn Park is situated a short 15 minute walk from the entrance of the Old Town. I highly recommend staying here for its easy connections to the city centre, to the airport and for the ferry to Helsinki.

Hilton Tallinn Park hotel opened only a few years ago and still oozes newness with its warm interior design. The rooms are modern, comfortable and spacious with floor to ceiling windows. The bathrooms are large and feature a separate bath and rain shower.

Furthermore, the Hilton has a spa complex with a pool and jacuzzi, and wet and dry saunas. The on-site restaurant ‘The Able Butcher’ is worth a meal as well if you’re a meat-lover, although vegetarians are also catered for.

Tallinn has an amazing food scene, but I highly recommend booking ahead , because the best restaurants fill up quickly.

Rataskaevu 16

A restaurant with no ‘real name’ it states on their website. They had naming rehearsels to try and come up with a real name, but all the good names were gone. Instead they focused on what the restaurant shouldn’t be like and the food the team all loved.

Final result: A restaurant named after the address it’s situated at – Rataskaevu 16 – that feels like walking into someone’s living room. A team that makes you feel like you already know them. And of course delicious food!

Tip : The restaurant is very popular, so either book in advance or walk in and be lucky. If it’s full they might be able to get you a table at their sister restaurant Väike and you can make a reservation at Rataskaevu 16 for another moment on your trip to Tallinn.

Väike is Rataskaevu 16’s sister restaurant. If you enjoyed the food at Rataskaevu 16 and feel like you want to explore more of the food they have on their menu you’ll be happy to know the menu at Väike is the same. And the vibe in the restaurant is very similar too.

Out of all the dishes we tried the food we enjoyed most were the breaded chicken fillet and the braised elk roast . The wines on offer accompany the dishes perfectly and if you are oblivious as to which wine to best accompany your dish then the staff can advise you perfectly.

Lee Restoran

Our experience at Lee Restoran was phenomenal! We loved the story of the restaurant focusing on modern Estonian cuisine with a sustainable element.

That sustainable element comes from the way they source their ingredients, to minimising their waste through innovation. This innovation comes for example from finding creative ways to utilise byproducts from ingredient preparation.

At Lee Restoran you can either choose to go a-la-carte, or to fully dive in and let the kitchen surprise you. Either way you will surely not be disappointed in the refined tastes, the food presentation and wine recommendations for each course of your meal.

To immerse yourself in medieval Tallinn visit restaurant Olde Hansa for lunch or dinner. Dishes here have existed for hundreds of years, and are truly unique to Estonia or even to this restaurant. At Olde Hansa the merchants that serve you will give you a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Røst Bakery

Fancy a great coffee with a cinnamon bun? Go to Røst Bakery ! The bakery is situated in the Rotermanni Quarter . The bread and pastries at Røst are all made from scratch in the on-site bakery. With a bit of luck your cinnamon bun is still warm and straight out of the oven.

The Able Butcher

I’m a real fan of hamburgers, so finding out about The Able Butcher restaurant in our hotel was a very convenient way of trying a burger out. Now I’ve tried quite a few burgers in my lifetime, but the burger here was a very very pleasant surprise. It was truly divine!

As its name suggests the restaurant heavily focuses on all sorts of meat, so despite it serving a few vegetarian dishes, better come here with a carnivorous mindset. The Able Butcher is situated in the Hilton Tallinn Park hotel.

Whisper Sister Bar

Without a doubt the best (cocktail) bar in Tallinn is Whisper Sister . Call in advance to make a reservation or when you’re at the front door to get a table. You Will be picked up at the front door. After a small tour of the bar you will be assigned a table.

Then it begins… choose one of the cocktails on the menu or name a cocktail that’s not on the menu that you fancy. Or give carte blanche to the cocktail shakers by giving them a few hints on your preferred flavours and let them create a unique cocktail. Enjoy a few snacks on the side and let the staff take fantastic care of you on your weekend in Tallinn.

Sigmund Freud Bar

Another cool cocktail bar is the Sigmund Freud Bar . The crowd here is a little more casual than at Whisper Sister. If your preferred cocktail is not on the menu, name what you want and the cocktail shakers can make it for you!

The most popular way to travel to Tallinn from anywhere in Europe would be to fly there, but when you’re already in the region you also have other options.

Tallinn Airport (TLL)

Tallinn probably has the cutest airport in Europe. It all feels very cosy, due to its small size, nice coffee bars, friendly staff and efficient security processes. This makes  Tallinn Airport a hassle free breeze to travel through.

Just outside the terminal is a tram stop connecting the airport to the city. If you get in through the front door of the tram you can pay your ticket with your credit card or debit card. Getting to the centre takes about 15 minutes.

Ferry from Helsinki

A very popular option to travel to Tallinn is by ferry from Helsinki. The ferry takes about two hours, is comfortable, has sufficient options to eat and there’s even mobile phone reception throughout the journey across the Gulf of Finland.

Tallink is the main company servicing the line between Helsinki and Tallinn and you can book tickets directly on their website.

From the ferry terminal in Tallinn it’s an easy 15-20 minute walk to most parts of the city. Of course you can grab one of the taxi’s from the taxi stand here too.

Tallinn is a very walkable city, so I suggest to just do that… walk! However sometimes you’re tired or want to visit somewhere a little further afield.

Jump on the tram

The tram is servicing the city and the airport very well. You won’t need to buy any tickets in advance if you get in through the front door of the tram. Just tap your debit or credit card issued by VISA (electron) or MasterCard (Maestro) at the device and as it turns green you’ve paid for your trip. Easy as that!

CityBee car sharing

A convenient way of getting around is by renting a car using car sharing service CityBee . CityBee is a company that services the main cities in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

After signing up in the app you can immediately see where cars are located. You can rent these cars per minute, or for various prepaid packages for a couple of hours up to multiple days or even weeks. The price includes petrol, so you won’t be in for any surprises fueling up the car.

CityBee has a modern fleet of cars that I have used both for a a couple of hours in Tallinn and Vilnius for a trip to Jägala waterfalls and Trakai castle , as well as for a 7-day trip through Latvia and Lithuania .

If you are spending more time in Estonia than just in Tallinn, or if you want to go on a few day trips out of the city and you don’t want to use CityBee, then I recommend renting a car through rentalcars.com . This website is very easy for comparing cars from multiple operators and can find you the best price for your desired car.

If your credit card doesn’t cover car insurance you can easily add insurance through rentalcars.com and avoid all the insurance selling hassle that usually comes when picking up a car.

Thanks for reading all the way to the end of this article. I hope you found enough ideas and suggestions to create you own perfect weekend in Tallinn.

A Broken Backpack

Perfect 2 Days In Tallinn Itinerary

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Jan 11, 2023 | Estonia , Europe , Travel Tips

The capital of Estonia, Tallinn is a charming city with a scenic Old Town designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Compact and perfect for a short visit, it combines medieval architecture and a strong cultural identity with an up-and-coming culinary scene and exciting nightlife.

Ready To Travel? Don't Go Without Travel Insurance.

Check Prices

A visit here gives you the opportunity to explore the city’s history, relax in its beautiful parks, or even call into its lively market and experience a taste of local life.

If you’re planning a weekend in Tallinn then you might be wondering which of its many attractions you should include on your itinerary.

So we’ve put together this handy guide to spending 2 days in Tallinn , packed with recommendations for the very best things to see and do.

We’ve also suggested some great places to dine and listed some of the best hotels in which to stay, no matter what your budget.

If you’re spending two days in Tallinn we recommend buying the Tallinn Card . It gives you lots of benefits, including free travel on the city’s trams and buses, along with free or discounted entry to pretty much every attraction listed on this itinerary.

Tallinn, Estonia

On the first of your two days in Tallinn, you’ll be exploring the quaint streets of the Old Town and visiting many of its fascinating historic buildings.

A great way to start your first day in Tallinn is by taking a walk along sections of the Town Wall, which originally formed part of the city’s fortifications.

They are well preserved and have been restored in some sections so you can walk in the footsteps of the city’s historic armies.

One of the most popular parts is the 14th-century Hellemann Tower. A short climb takes you to its first viewing level, where you can walk along the ancient wall.

But be sure to climb to the second level, too, as this gives you an exceptional view of the city landscape and takes in buildings you’ll be visiting throughout the day.

Next, head to Toompea Castle and Hill. The castle was built in the 18th century and features a beautiful Baroque façade. If you book in advance you can enjoy a free tour of the interior.

Otherwise, simply stop to admire the views across the city from the 170-foot hill.

Now it’s time to stroll to Tallinn Town Hall Square. Get your camera ready, as this is one of the most picturesque parts of the city, filled with soaring spires, colorful buildings, and attractive wrought iron details.

Tallinn port, Estonia

Depending on the time of year you visit, you may catch a concert or festival – and if you’re visiting in December you can shop at the Christmas Market and see the famous Tallinn Christmas tree.

On one side of the square sits the city’s Town Hall – one of Tallinn’s most famous buildings and the oldest town hall in Scandinavia.

The famous symbol of the city – a weather vane known as the Vana Toomas (Old Thomas) – sits atop the tower and if you are visiting in summer you can view the building’s interior. It is also open to visitors for a few days in January.

For your last stop before lunch, check out the Tallinn Town Hall Pharmacy. An old white building with medieval signage houses the pharmacy, which is one of the oldest in Europe and is believed to have been in operation since 1415!

It is fascinating to visit and features a room displaying old (and somewhat intimidating) medical remedies and surgical instruments.

All that sightseeing will have made you hungry, so for a delicious lunch take the 10-minute stroll to Balti Jaama Turg, Tallinn’s amazing street food market.

It’s open every day of the week and packed with stalls selling everything from bao buns and ramen to coffee and macarons!

Once pleasantly full, stroll back into the Old Town to visit St Olaf’s Church.

This imposing medieval building is quite remarkable, its tower is said to have survived more than 10 lightning strikes. Some of these led to damaging fires.

You can pay to climb to the top via a narrow winding staircase. The 360-degree views from the viewing platform are simply marvelous, making the church a ‘must visit’ when seeing Tallinn in 2 days.

Old Town Tallinn, Estonia

From there it’s a short walk to the impressive Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin on Toompea Hill.

Believed to have originally been built sometime in the 13th century, the cathedral has undergone many additions and restorations in the ensuing years.

This is evident from the mixed architectural styles you will notice from the outside!

Inside, you can see gravestones of various dignitaries from the 13 to 18th centuries, along with more recent coats of arms.

You can also give a donation and climb the bell tower for views of the city, which we’d recommend if you didn’t climb the tower at St Olaf’s.

The last stop of the afternoon is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, probably the city’s most outstanding building.

It was built in a Russian Revival style between 1884 and 1900, at a time when the Russian Empire ruled the country.

The interior is quite beautiful and richly decorated with mosaics and icons. Its towers, meanwhile, contain 11 bells, including the largest in Tallinn.

The perfect end to your first day in Tallinn is with a medieval-style dinner at Olde Hansa!

This restaurant is well-known across the world as the ‘most authentic medieval dining experience ever’.

It serves food and drinks made with methods and recipes from the 15th century, with unusual dishes like dried elk meat and homemade nutty bread with herbs.

If you’re thirsty you can opt for a tankard of honey dark beer – a unique and unforgettable treat!

On the second of your 2 days in Tallinn, you’ll be visiting museums, an old prison, and a couple of the city’s most interesting neighborhoods.

Start your day with a stroll through the 250-acre Kadriorg Park, Estonia’s most spectacular green space.

After admiring the flower garden and symmetrical Swan Lake, walk along the promenade to the Kadriorg Art Museum, which is housed inside the Kadriorg Palace.

This Baroque Palace is simply beautiful and was built from 1718 to 1725 by Peter the Great for Catherine I of Russia. Indeed, its name translates to ‘Palace of Catherine’s Valley’.

It underwent a major renovation in 1825 on the orders of Nicholas I of Russia, resulting in the imposing building we see today.

Inside you’ll find elaborate decoration, breathtaking murals, and beautiful sculptures. The artworks are from Estonian and other European artists and the exhibitions change often.

Next, take the tram to the north of the city to visit the Patarei Prison and Sea Fortress exhibition area.

The fortress was built in the 19th century to defend Tallinn and has been used as an artillery battery, barracks, and – during the Soviet era – a prison.

It now stands as a memorial to the victims of communism and Nazism and is considered a symbol of resistance.

Tallinn skyline, Estonia

The exhibition area is named ‘Communism is prison’; you can learn about the ideology behind the doctrine and see the original interior and prison yard.

From there a short walk will take you to Lennusadam Seaplane Harbour.

This is Estonia’s most popular museum, full of exhibits the whole family will find interesting. These include the full-size Lembit submarine from the 1930s, which you can actually walk inside, plus the Suur Tõll icebreaker on the quay.

For lunch, head to the hip and happening Kalamaja district, where you’ll be spending the first part of your afternoon.

The neighborhood was established in the Middle Ages as a home for sailors and fishermen. Its name, in fact, translates to ‘fish house’ in Estonian.

Recently, however, it has become a hot spot for younger locals and is packed with flea markets, boutiques, bars, and cafes.

Yet it has a peaceful ambiance and it’s easy to while away a couple of hours here, strolling through the streets and admiring the iconic and colorful wooden houses.

Your final stop of the afternoon is at Telliskivi Creative City.

Once a factory complex, it now attracts the artistic community and hosts regular events, with lots of street art to admire, a market every Saturday, and plenty of designer stores.

You can try out local beer at the Purtse taproom, homemade gin at the Junimperium Distillery and Bar, or treat yourself to a glass of local wine at the Nudist Winery.

Alternatively, pop in for a coffee and a classic cinnamon bun at Fika, a cool cafe based on Sweden’s ‘fika’ concept – a coffee and cake break with friends!

For a special treat on your last evening, head to the elegant suburb of Nõmme for dinner at Paju Villa.

Housed in a beautiful art nouveau building, the restaurant has two floors and features a series of small, interconnecting rooms.

It serves both Estonian and international dishes, with lots of choices for children too.

Are 2 Days In Tallinn Enough?

A weekend in Tallinn is just the right amount of time to see all of its main attractions.

Thanks to its compact size, travel time is kept at a minimum. This makes it easy to see more of the sights in just a 2-day period.

Tommy Fleetwood, Oscar Craig, Challenge Tour

Tommy Fleetwood was on dad duty for his stepson Oscar Craig this week in his first Challenge Tour start.

The 7-time DP World Tour winner was Craig’s caddie for his debut as he helped lead the youngster to a 2-under through 36 holes.

Playing as an amateur, Craig fired off a 3-under 69 on Thursday and a 1-over 73 on Friday to make the cut in his debut.

Craig finished bogey-free on Day 1 with birdies at Nos. 4, 8 and 18.

Friday’s round proved tougher for the youngster, but he tallied three birdies to go with four bogeys.

The 17-year-old was the only amateur to make the weekend at the UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Fleetwood boasted about his stepson on social media after their round.

“Oscar you earned your way into your first Challenge Tour event with your hard work and talent! So proud to witness you make the cut against this quality field. Golf is great,” Fleetwood wrote.

The Englishman commented on a video the Challenge Tour posted with both having smiles across their faces. He pulled him into a giant hug and couldn’t stop smiling while they walked off the green.

They celebrated with family and friends. His mom, Claire Fleetwood, was also there to embrace him.

Fleetwood knows all about the Challenge Tour. At 20 years old, he was the youngest player to finish atop the rankings in 2011 after he won the Kazakhstan Open.

He went on to win his first DP World Tour event, the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, in 2013.

Fleetwood's caddie duties will continue for the next two days as Craig secured his spot for the weekend. While he will not take home any money, playing all four days in a professional golf event is quite the feat.

2024 Zurich Classic leaderboard, scores: Rory McIlroy & Shane Lowry hold share of lead entering weekend

Mcilroy and lowry remain on top of a crowded leaderboard as competition enters its third day.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans - Round Two

The 2024 Zurich Classic toughened up Friday after some relatively free-flowing play in the first round. Instead of best ball format where teams get to take the better of their players' two scores on each hole, Round 2 was alternate shot where teammates often left their partners in terrible positions.

Nobody, it seemed, was immune. Matt Fitzpatrick missed a shockingly short putt that his brother, Alex, had to clean up. Will Zalatoris flubbed a shot from the woods on a thick bed of pine straw that Sahith Theegala had to come in and try to address.

Even the co-leaders, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, had their moments.

"I missed a pretty short one on 18 and then another one on the second," Lowry said. "I started to get a little bit into myself, but to roll that one in [at the fourth hole for par] was nice, and to play the last few holes the way we did was really nice, too.

"I think a bit of a lesson there for myself to kind of keep going and just keep trying and keep plugging away. We did that today, and I'm pretty happy how we finished."

How they finished was birdie-birdie-par to shoot a 2-under 70 and maintain a share of the lead after 36 holes of play at 13 under.

It's a crowded leaderboard, though, which should make for a fun few days of play this weekend at the Zurich Classic. Let's take a closer look at the second round and what to expect on Saturday and Sunday.

The leaders

T1. Davis Thompson & Andrew Novak (-13) T1. Aaron Rai & David Lipsky (-13) T1. Rory McIlroy & Shane Lowry (-13) T1. Ryan Brehm & Mark Hubbard (-13)

Obviously, McIlroy and Lowry are the headliners among this group, especially after shooting 61 to open play as they also co-led after Day 1. Given their firepower, they could follow that with something similar in the second best ball portion of the event Sunday. They are an endearing team, one that is easy to cheer, but also they work well together as McIlroy pointed out on Friday after their 70.

"As Shane said, after those it's easy to sort of get hard on yourself," he explained. "I was just trying to keep him as positive as possible and just remind him that I'm here and I'm here to back him up in any way that I can. So, yeah, just trying to keep him positive."

Not every team in this field is as tight-knit as McIlroy and Lowry, and while that can sometimes work against two players, in this instance of these two playing together for the first time at this event, it seems to be working in their favor.

Other contenders

T5. Callum Tarren & David Skinns (-12) T5. Nick Taylor & Adam Hadwin (-12) T5. Zach Johnson & Ryan Palmer (-12) T5. Patrick Cantlay & Xander Schauffele (-12)

Cantlay and Schauffele made a late run at this 13-under lead but bogeyed the par-5 last to fall into a tie for fifth. Still, they shot a round-of-the-day 67 in alternate shot and will be terrifying if they're anywhere close to the lead after best ball on Saturday.  For whatever reason -- perhaps because they are top 10 players in the world, perhaps because they play together all the time, or perhaps because they have so much experience in this format -- they have been among the best alternate shot teams at this event ever and hold the record in that format at 63.

There is nobody I would trust more Sunday.

2024 Zurich Classic updated odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Rory McIlroy & Shane Lowry: 13/5
  • Patrick Cantlay & Xander Schauffele: 7/2
  • Andrew Novak & Davis Thompson: 9-1
  • Nick Taylor & Adam Hadwin: 10-1
  • Corey Conners & Taylor Pendrith: 12-1
  • Aaron Rai & David Lipsky: 14-1
  • Ryan Brehm & Mark Hubbard: 16-1

I really like the Canadian duo of Taylor and Hadwin, who are 12 under and just one back of the lead. There are currently 39 teams that are within five of the lead, though, which is a crazy number. The bigger problem for Taylor and Hadwin is that they have two Ryder Cup duos ahead of them. Still, Taylor is one of the more underrated players in the world, and both of those guys can get scorching. If they can ham and egg it at the right time on Saturday, they could hold the lead on Sunday.

Taylor Swift and boyfriend Travis Kelce jetted to Las Vegas over the weekend to support pal Patrick Mahomes before Swift resumes the international leg of her blockbuster Eras Tour.

Dressed in a gorgeous green gown, the pop superstar — who has been on hiatus since March after performing shows in Japan, Australia and Singapore in early 2024 — held hands with the star Chiefs tight end at a gala on the first day of Mahomes’ 15 and the Mahomies Foundation Vegas Golf Classic.

“NBD…. Just T Swift and her man Travis Kelce,” one social media user gushed of the couple, who have been dating since the summer of 2023.

“And they are super adorable together. So down to earth & kind,” the caption continued.

Kelce, 34, helped to amp up the crowd during an auction at the event, revealing his “significant other” Swift, also 34, wanted to offer four tickets to a future Eras Tour show in Miami, Indianapolis or New Orleans when it returns stateside later this year.

“I was just talking to my significant other and we might have one other auction item that wasn’t on the docket. Has anybody heard of the Eras Tour?” Kelce asked the crowd, who responded with cheers and applause.

Travis Kelce waves a yellow napkin while revving up at the crowd.

“… Does that fire anybody up right now?”

Auctioneer Harry Santa revealed in a separate Instagram Story that the tickets sold for $80,000.

Mahomes, who established 15 and the Mahomies Foundation in 2019 to help improve children’s lives, then “started launching signed footballs for $10K each!” according to Santa.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift were first linked in 2023.

It was an exciting return trip to Sin City, where Mahomes and Kelce’s Chiefs won Super Bowl 2024 in February.

Kansas City defeated the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, 25-22, to claim their third championship in five seasons.

Swift cheered on Kelce from Allegiant Stadium, where they shared a celebratory kiss on the field .

The couple then partied into the night with Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, who grew close to Swift this past season.

Swift will head to Europe next month, when the Eras Tour resumes in Paris on May 9.

She and Kelce have been enjoying each other’s company this offseason, which included a PDA-filled getaway to the Bahamas in March and a weekend at Coachella earlier this month.

It’s been speculated Kelce will visit Swift overseas.
